I say: give us the weekend, I still have what feels like a truckload to do...unrealistic to some that have seen my stuff, but there is such things like drying times that will eat me up......
Also...I have made it currently look like my palisade is dug into the ground, outside the ground will be partially grass and downtrodden earth...inside probably too eh?...
mars2024 wrote: Well, you guys are fantastic. In light of that, I'm going to submit anyway, just to participate. Thanks again for doing this. The community is stronger when we can all show our work to each other and get feedback and reinforcement. So here goes:

While it's not totally in line with the competition, my rationale is that a squad of Eldar Rangers have been ordered to scout ahead for the advancing Craftworld forces. They've taken refuge in this wreck of an Imperial freighter where they're awaiting extraction/further orders.
Good luck everyone! Thanks for sharing your fantastic work.
I,for one, say the more the merrier with these things. Welcome aboard. I bolded the money quotes, BTW.
Hmm, an extension might allow me to get some interior work done, because right now I just ran out of time to build, and really need to paint what I have. And here would be the hab complex's final WIPs, needing a good paint job, some plants for the planters, and a 'dirty trick' we Infinity guys use to up the wow factor... But the extension is entirely up to you Camrkierhi.
My only question is about the amount and nature of the photos. How many and what sort of views?
On the photo's as many as you can muster. Preferably all around and from above for each entry. And I would request that you try your utmost with the pics as it can make or break a piece.
Hints, well I am no expert, but would say, lighting and background. Daylight if possible is brilliant for your models, and if the subject is dark do not use a white or bright background. Try to make it compliment your colour scheme. I really hope I am not offending anyone, Not teaching you guys to suck eggs and all. Just passing on the bits I have picked up.
As too extension, Please let me know by PM or post here your thoughts, If there are no objections we will extend it a little. I would say full credit and kudos to those who are managing to complete in time, and it's your thoughts that really matter to this.
@Viktor: Sweet fort ! Looking great, really. The furniture came up really fine, too.
@mars2024: Welcome, and good looking as well
@Red Harvest: That scenery is amazing. Different - 40K wise, I mean -, awesome aesthetics. Waiting to see it painted.
As for the extension, please, do go along with it if it allows for more entries finished! "Just" two days are not much of a spread for the deadline, but an extra weekend can mean a lot in hobby-time, maybe even some of the lately discouraged entrants can be lured back thus!
(On another hand, daylight pics are almost only possible during weekends for some, so a short extension could probably help with that issue as well)
As Cam said, with the slight extension to the deadline proposed, hopefully those of you struggling to finish will have some extra time now while those already finished will not begrudge some extra competition
Please do PM me your photo links to completed entries - can be either from Dakka's own gallery or hosted off site (e.g. Photobucket...). I'll then compile them all into a single post ready for Judgement Day
As for the pictures, I want to see multiple angles including all sides and aerial shots. I'd also like to see at least one scale shot with your miniature collection of choice (please let me know the scale if its non-GW). If relevant to your model, interior pics are also desirable.. To be honest, the more pictures the merrier really.
Note, I may PM you if your pics are blurry or too dark, please don't be offended by this, I just want everyone to have the best chance during judging...
It has been said often... but is sooo true.... there is a lot of impressive work going on!
I am still WIP but need to figure out a canopy for my temporary accomodation...... was going to have a go at some cammo netting.... but cant make it work.... so might go for a more rigid roof...... metal sheets or something......... fingers crossed i will get it done in time......
for camo net, Have you got any light gauze bandage, use that with dilute pva glue to set it in shape and you should be good to go.
Or try the plastic mesh bags that you buy fruit like oranges and lemons in. You an then spray it with the camo pattern and/ or stick bits of foliage into it
Automatically Appended Next Post: For metal sheets try the corrugate cardboard you sometimes get in boxes.
I am going to throw my hat into the pile for this contest.
I am working on an Arbites Sector House. This is a small structure intended to be a staging point, safehouse and general lodging for an Arbites Patrol or Response Team. In-game, it is roughly the right size, shape and armament to be used as an Imperial Bastion fortification. Style-wise, it is meant to evoke a bit of a courthouse feel (with the large decorative columns in front), but with a nice hint of Grimdark menace as appropriate for the Adeptus Arbites. (Hence the Servo-Skull monitored video surveillance nodes on the top, and sentry guns on the walls and the "front porch".
I have a WIP thread currently in the Dakka P&M Blogs section. I will post a few pics here as well though.
Early WIP showing basic construction, mostly foamboard (with the paper peeled from one side), some wooden corner columns and detail pieces, plastic cake pillars, and a few bits and bobs from Cities of Death buildings and an Imperial Bastion.
Sentry gun made from a Heavy Bolter, Grey Knights Servo-Skull and old-style Hunter Killer pintle mounts.
Icons made from Imperial Eagles and a Dark Angels winged sword icon. The fists are sculpted from Procreate.
A black base coat has been applied to the whole piece. More painting will be done tonight, and I hope to finish by tomorrow.
I just found this thread today, too bad because this looks like fun. I hope you are going to follow this up with another round. I have participated in MiniWarGaming's group builds. They run their competition for only a month, very hard to complete something very cool in 4 weeks.
Would it be possible to get a stickied thread for the contest announcements? It could be for all the terrain and painting and converting contests. That way it would always be readily seen.
Basically the winner of this comp, runs the next round. This is round 8. Always terrain, but different each time. So WP is right, they pretty much run back to back. There will be links here after the comp to the next one.
@ Tinker.......It's never too late. As it states in the rules, size does not matter. (that's what the wife tells me anyway!) so even though we have some of the most spectacular terrain I have ever seen being produced, WP piece is equally qualified and stands every chance of winning. So go for it! Just don't try building a cityscape.
I would love to pull something together, but I am already waist deep in the MWG Group Build for the month. After that I am defiantly down with this format on the next round, more time and more participants is very cool!
Besides, I like big terrain. I started on a piece that is 42" tall. Not the best idea since it remains unfinished.
If you are fan of orks you can check out My Original Thread on Dakka for pics of the beast.
To those wondering if there is enough time left, by the time I complete my Arbites Sector House, I will have worked on it for less than a week. It is definitely an achievable feat!
Keep it coming guy's Good luck to you all, and thank you all for your wonderful effort's whether you make it or not, I have been honoured by your participation.
I am no slacking.... not at all... I am currently keeping quiet due to the intensive hobby work
I dunno if I am able to show a last WIP... probably more likely the finished entry... also... I think for my own stuff a vid might be useful on my behalf too, eh?^^
Glutton for punishment? You like putting yourself in a position where its literally "Oh man! Look at that! It looks amazing! The detail! The painting!" and then you turn and repeat the process with the next piece before being told "Okay, which is best?"
Viktor - those columns are available in pretty much any store that sells cake decorating supplies here in the US. I can't imagine they would be too difficult to find elsewhere, but I'm not much of a world traveller, so couldn't be certain.
If they truly are unavailable in Germany for some reason, I could probably be persuaded to pick up a few packages and ship them your way provided you cover the costs. (They are pretty cheap, about $5 US for a package of four in this size, and $3.50 for the shorter ones.)
Wilton is the brand name of those excellent columns. I riveted and skulled a couple and sent them to Galorn for mold-making, but he hasn't gotten to it yet (hint hint, win wink) I want to cast them in plaster specifically to break them into ruins.
So now I'm being stalked by a German. Not sure how to feel about that...
I did the columns upside down on purpose. I wondered if anyone would notice that. Always fun to put a little extra dystopia into your work. Remember, the AdMech doesn't really understand what they are doing, so little errors like this can creep into the design quite easily with nobody really understanding what's happening or why they do what they do.
Its like the 40K version of that story about the guy's wife who cut the ends off her pot roast. He asks her why, and she says "That's how my mother did it". They ask her mother why, and she says "That's how your grandmother did it". They go see grandma and ask her. "Oh," says grandma, "I didn't have a pot big enough, so the roast would only fit if I cut the ends off."
My silence has been a result of some fairly frantic painting.
I'm really impressed with many of the entries that I have seen so far and I wish you all the very best of luck.
@ Ambience 327: That is really impressive over such a short time span, very nice, reminds me of something I saw in a WD around when the Witchhunters codex was released.
Although I wouldn't say my entry is finished it has reached a point where I achieved the look that I set out for and I have run out of time through no fault but my own. I shall continue to add to the building (most notably the interior which I really want to make).
I'll post up the last WIP images that I made last weekend:
Ruglud will be recieving my entry shortly
Again best of luck to all of you who have entered
and a big thank you to Cam for a great competition.
dropped my payload on ruglud just now... *pheeewww* was a close one until the end... man flu made me loose almost my last day....*trying to muster up my last resort sympathy and mercy^^*
Thank you everyone for your efforts in making this a great competition. The competition is now officially closed and Judging must commence. And I have to say it is going to be very very tough. Really glad I roped in some help.
The entries vary from a lone soldier wrapped against the rain to full habitats. Fantastic effort by all. I really can't say more.
THANK YOU
We will be with you as soon as possible and I am hoping that Ruglud can get a final entry posting going so we can see your magnificent work.
Thank you again too all, here we go Judges, this is where we earn our bacon.......
So here we go - the final entrants in one BIG post... We've picked out a selection of photos, but there are more to be seen in the galleries for each contestant (some in the Dakka gallery, some hosted off-site), so check 'em all out
ACHOO! Mills sniffed loudly and wrapped his blanket tighter around himself. This planet was miserable. Always raining. Permanent cloudy skies and a terrible wetness that permeated everything. Mills sighed and looked up and down the line. Everyone looked just as miserable as him. Huddled in groups shivering or moving about, trying to get the blood pumping.
He missed his home. A sunny Agri-world where the work was hard but the feeling of accomplishment was high. Here, on this drowning ball of mud... harder work for no accomplishment.
The fighting had ground to a stand still in the last day as the rain picked up. Aside from the occasional mortar, the rebels seemed to be as beaten by the weather as he was and everything slowed down. The worst was when the sun set and the chill set in. At least one person in his platoon froze to death in the night. He grew weary of sitting or kneeling and chose to lay down, never to rise again.
Mills leaned forward and peered up, looking around his makeshift tarp that had been cut from the charred remnants of a tent. The clouds seemed dark and angry. He sighed and sat back again. His mind dwelled on his home. Large fields of grain, gently swaying in the breeze, the sun on his face. He sighed and opened his eyes again and was greeted by the same dreary everything. Then, as he watched, the clouds parted briefly and the sun peered down through the clouds before being engulfed again. Mills smirked.
"There are worse places..." he muttered as he lowered his helmet and shut his eyes. At least here, in his little home away from home, he could get some well needed rest.
JackDarkmoore - Mk. II Standard issue field tent. Made from highly sophisticated material, this tent can provide shelter to a squad of Kriegsmen. Made of synthetic fabric that protects the inhabitants from radiation, biological and chemical agents while providing comfortable living temperature and air filtering.

Gods this judging mallarky is very very difficult. So much brilliant work. Got some results in and it's a close run thing at the moment.
All you guys who entered, but could not finish, please could we see your work. Post us up some images to inspire future efforts.
Also Please PM me your votes for the Special Effort Prize. This is not based on if its the best model, but the effort and improvement someone may have made in their entry. Or thinking outside the box, and something just really cool.
Again thank you all for making this a great competition, and "shakes fist!" making it so blooming hard to judge.
Camkierhi wrote:Again thank you all for making this a great competition, and "shakes fist!" making it so blooming hard to judge.
You looked for it, asked for it, and you got it. Great comp, excellent turnaround, awesome pieces in display, you should be proud Now, do your part!
Ruglud wrote:My votes are now in. Good luck to Cam who now has to compile the results
Thanks for taking the time!
dsteingass wrote:I lost a bit of my soul with this judging.
Sorry to hear that.
Maybe a starting point for the next comp's theme? A scratchbuilt - and riveted - soul making contest, for former judges who gave it all in the line of duty?
Billy will get farther in life if he learns to spell. Then he can become a lawyer and get the courts to make Timmy tear down his own tree house. Timmy's tears will taste better that way. Just sayin' XD.
I PMed you Cam w/ my vote but I think it got deleted, so I've sent it again.
Judging is hard. I used to manage painting and appearance judging for a large east coast tournament. It is real work. My symapthies to the judges. But it should not have a soul cost. That only happens when you have to hold your nose and pick the least bad. Not the case here at all, unless my eyes are lying to me
I think this is the first one to have this level of participation, actually. This is a good thing. One thing that Cam may have forgot to mention, the 1st place winner ALWAYS runs the next comp. No pressure to start the next one right away, but Cam ran this one properly, it's a good format to follow IMHO.
so, for Cam....
Citizen cam...brilliant adaptation Dave... And jack...I think if I look I may find the first one after that you have to follow the bread crumb trail, as in each thread the next thread got linked...
I would like to say this has been amazing, thank you all, everyone, for a brilliant experience.
The judging has left us slightly lesser men, as we all had to dig very deep.
So here we go.........
1st............Littletower.
[
Simply to staggeringly amazing, such a big project with great detail.
2nd..Red Harvest.
Too pretty for words. Stunning work, that is absolutely inspirational.
3rd..Viktor von Domm.
Just amazing, epic proportions and amazing detail.
I can honestly say there was nothing between these three entries, points in it. You have truly done some amazing work and thank you for making us all sit back in awe.
( I literally sold a piece of my soul to get a result here.)
Thank you.
As to the Special Effort Award.
mars2024.
For your pure use of junk, and amazing weathering.
I will be in touch with the winners shortly for prize giving etc.
Again thank you all so much, please continue to make these contests so great.
I am afraid Littletower the flame of rivethood passes to you for that one.
Well, as he has just stated, LT has all the other threads bookmarked this shows in my opinion that this is a riveteer that has done his homework and knows what he is doing. A fitting and justified winner, and one who will carry the flame for the new comp with pride and responsibility! Congratz LT, well done, and may the riveting gods be on your side when the tome comes for your final judgment.
At red harvest, awesome doesn't cut it mate, I am a fan finally now of infinity due to your work, which I think is saying a lot!
It has been an honor to be bested by you two!
And mars, random junk to be worked as a ruined piece of machinery is an art in itself...which is still a closed book to me...congrats and well deserved!.
To all my other fellow competitors: it was a pleasure to fight alongside and build against each of you.
As for the judges....thanks for judging our stuff, hosting and being there for us. And I have the deepest respect for the lot of you to keep your own opinions so long to yourselves for so long, I can only imagine what it had to cost you from not bubbling all over what you think about the buildings early on...
And cam, thanks for providing us with such a thought through theme for a competition, that kept us motivated and going for so long without ever truly leaving a beat!!! It made me finish one entry again after so long in time!!!!
Congratulations LT and welcome to the riveters Cam has really set the bar high on the "wot makes a good competition" scale
You've got to match this round in the next comp
Red harvest, really awesome work and really well deserved,
I hope to see you in the next round (?)
I 100% agree with the judges decision, fantastic work from the top 3 and a thoroughly well deserved win, even if I had fully finished and if I had a choice I would still be happy to be beaten by your entries LT, Red harvest and Vik.
Well done and congratulations to all those who took part. Hope to see you again in the next round.
Congratulations Little Tower!... o, debería haber dicho ¡Felicitaciones! Well done Vic! Gut Gemach? (sorry, I don't speak German. Not a whole lot of need here for it in the USA. Spanish OTOH...
This was fun. Congrats to all who entered. It really is about the whole experience... A great theme. It's really the reason I jumped in. I hope LittleTower can come up with one that is equally compelling.
And nobody lost any bits of their soul. Stop sayin' that. Making hard decisions strengthen the soul... most of the time anyway.
Thanks everyone! That final lineout was an incredible display; it had me on my toes up to the last moment!
Really honoured, and my greatest acknowledgment to Camkierhi and the Judges for the effort put in the contest.
And an awesome spirit on the whole comp as well, really enjoyed the WIP journey and the rapport among participants!
Now, I just hope I’m up to the upcoming task, will give some serious thought to the possible theme(s) before launching the next instalment (Any input on that will be enormously welcome!)
(Actually, I’ve been juggling with the idea of putting up a Dakka Article compiling these, in a manner not too different to Ruglud’s Final Entries Post above)
Hope to see you all in the next Round!
Cheers,
LT
PS Thanks again to all for your compliments and congratulations, I have to admit I’m feeling quite proud of myself right now! And Red Harvest, muchas gracias!
PS2: Deeply considering the next’s Round theme ATM, will keep you posted.
Well, that was one of the most awesome contest that Dakka Dakka has seen in a good long while. I'm glad I wasn't competing, because what a line up of talent. I often say it, but I really think we have some amazing talent on the forum
Keep it up all of you, it's inspiring seeing the work and congrats to our winners, especially Littletower.
Special thanks to Camkierhi for a wonderful theme and hosting the comp...
See you in the next round and as I'm currently semi-retired from entering competitions, I'll happily put name in the hat for judging duties if so required...
Thanks again for the contest everyone and congrats Littletower! Everyone did a great job - I really loved watching the progression of each piece. I'm looking forward to the next one. The theme sounds great with tons of possibilities.
Thanks also for the votes of confidence. It was beyond unexpected. You all made my week.
