The =L=eague of Extraordinary Riveters
Terrain Competition:Round 8.
Accommodation

Welcome to the 8th round of the League of Extraordinary Riveters Terrain Competition.

This competition is open to anyone who wishes to have a go.

This rounds theme is Accommodation. The idea being that all armies must bed down at some point and be it a tent or a small tarp thrown over a ruin up to a full barracks or bastion just about every army must rest at some point. And they may set up perimeter defences, and gun emplacements.
The point being it can be anything from a sniper in a cave to full army base, your imagination is the limit. Oh and size does not matter, all will be judged on their own merits.

Rules:.
1: Talk about fight club, sorry, mean the Competition. Tell everyone.
2: Size does not matter. Size is totally up to you. As small or as big as you like. It is suggested that time frame is an issue (see rule 3) so if you go too big you might not finish in time.
3: Running time. The competition starts at the stroke of midnight on the New Year. And the finish date is Midnight on the 28th February 2014. It would be preferred not to have to extend this, however it will not be ruled out at this stage.
4: Game system. There are no restrictions. Any and all are welcome. From fantasy to any scale you wish all are welcome. Indeed it does not have to be usable in game, dioramas are welcome.
5: Materials. As long as you start out with unfinished models, the world is your mollusc. Part painted is ok, but will be taken into account during judging. Kits are allowed, but please bear in mind that the judging allows for inventive material use and scratch building, and points maybe unavailable to a pure kit build.
6: Final Entry: A complete model, painted in full and pictured in as good a manner as possible with all around shots and small description please.
7: Most important rule of all, THE RULE OF COOL, applies to all.

Judging:.
Criteria: Points up to the stated amount will be awarded in the following criteria.
Modelling: Total 35 points available..
10 points Tidy Modelling. No mould lines, nice crisp edges, no silly gaps.
10 points Design. Well laid out and possibly usable in game will earn points here. Extraordinary use of Rivets would gain extra here.
10 points Materials. More points given for scratch building as opposed to a kit. Recycling scrap material will be looked on very favourably.
5 points WOW factor. Blow our minds and get a few extra points.
Painting: Total 40 points available..
5 points Neatness. Nice crisp paintwork, no silly mistakes. Not to be mistaken here, weathering and effects are obviously welcome and indeed encouraged. (see below.) This is for painting between the lines properly.
10 points Effects. Points awarded for special effects use, including OSL, Weathering etc.
10 points Technique. Points for shading, blending and good solid paintwork available.
10 points Colour. Give us a dull paint job and expect no points here. Appropriate colour schemes will be awarded points and good use of colour will be awarded. (yes beige is a colour too)
5 points WOW factor. Again blow our minds and get some extra points.

Interpretation: Total 10 points available..
10 points Good representation of the theme.

Judges Rule of Cool Special Award:.
Total of 15 points available.
Totally at the judges discretion, rule of cool being the biggest factor here. If we like what we see, even if it’s got a bad paint job, or badly stuck together, it can still earn points for just being cool.

Prizes:.
1st prize. The greatest prize of all….League Membership.
And Just to bulk it out, (and I hope this doesn’t put you off.) Camkierhi will custom build a vehicle/terrain piece of your choice for you to paint up.
2nd prize. Camkierhi special supply drop. A parcel of materials for you to build further delights for us to ogle over.
3rd prize. Kudos only at being placed, consider yourself lucky.

Special Effort Prize.
To be awarded by popular vote for best effort, all considered.
Pile of materials to help you further improve your skills.[/size]

whut? I am joining this as the first one... and this almost four hours later when it was first started? I think this one needs some more promotion^^...

I like that theme a lot! I need to make some serious thinking for this one... you already pointed out some very good ideas...some way too good to refuse... hmmm... will probably take around half a week till I finally can show some physical means on how I interpret this comps theme...

stay tuned....(I need to finish for once an entry to the competition...all the last ones are still on my shelf of shame...

but advertisement is coming up right now^^...

cheers, vik

I've already changed the link in my terrain competition banner, and will be advertising this in my p&m blog.

I might be entering, when is the end date?

Participants here is the banner, just change the round brackets to square

Hmn, I think I'm game for the modelling side, but I do rather like paint up rather dirty looking models (ah wait that's an advantage right?).

I... may have an idea already. Though I'm judging its applicability to the brief. Whether I can stop myself from beginning it before the start date is up in the air. Are you expecting us to keep a log of our work or just to post the results at the end?

By the time I finished reading this, I had more ideas in my head than I could ever build in a life time.
But I think I've got one, I just hope I can find the time to build it .

You've chosen a great subject for this comp, I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Tossing my hat into the ring!

Very interesting subject, lots of possibilities in this, will be doing some thinking over the next few days.

(And the comp being hosted and judged by Camkierhi means he can not win this one as well, which might actually give the rest a chance!)

Cheers.

Thank you one and all so far for responding to the call.

It is now confirmed, an additional 2 Judges are duely elected. Masters Ruglud and Inmygraven have volunteered to assist me.

Please be a little patient with me as I have never run anything like this before, but I am sure everyone (especially my fellow Judges) wikll keep me straight.

I will endeavor to start the list of competitors tonight.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok added names to OP, please bear in mind nothing is set in concrete, this is meant to be fun after all.

And Dave was correct-ish. Last day of February 2014 at midnight GMT is closing date. Judging will be ASAP after that.

Please feel free to post WIP shots and to bandy ideas around on this thread, we would however ask you to refrain from posting final shot here, (think Skalk had that one right).

Good luck to all and please tell your friends.

That's a long time considering my modelling rate. ...Though then again, it could just be an excuse to bother my butt to paint something half decently. =P

Oh, and to confirm, I haven't started anything yet. Despite my chosen idea tying in with something I proposed in my blog recently, I haven't actually begun any terrain for that yet. So... shuddit.

Oh and I would like to say, the start time is more for Judges to finalise rules and alert as many people as possible, and letting people have time to decide on an idea, than stopping someone collecting up a few bits toward there entry, complete a model before the start date and we might have to disqualify that model mind you.

My New Year's been relocated, so unfortunately I'll have to make do with empty beer bottles and crisp bags. Sorry about that.

Theophony stick your name down anyway. I mean you've no compulsion to finish anything, but you may as well not rule yourself out. Two months is a long time in which to make a tent with a sleeping guardsman in it (whilst a squig tiger looms over him, a ready wrapped meal...).

The big problem is I'm still stuck in the dulldrums here. I've tried everything to get my mojo back, but I'm afraid right now I'm stuck. I'm going to try and paint some king of war stuff and hope that inspiration strikes me. But my completion record is bad enough with just tossing my name in on each one.

Ah hang on. Are we allowed to create a number of smaller pieces of terrain and group them together, or does it have to be a single piece? It was my intention to create one central building, but surround it with a few other bits to give it some character? The whole thing would be the same size as some of the entries from previous competitions.

LoER Terrain Competition:round 8. the RESULTS!!! @ 2013/12/31 17:13:49

I think scale and size is also open to everything... I think cam stated in the rules that you can go ballistic in size if you stick to the time setting...

@ Wyrmalla. Indeed exactly as Vik said, build away, one item or several that make a whole, not worried as long as it is completable in the time frame. At the end we do want you to have a usable piece of terrain. So what ever works for you.

@ All the new guys, welcome and great to see you. Now bring it on people. I expect to see wip shots by 00:05 tonight.

Does taking a picture of a bottle of Stella and calling that a WIP shot count? ...I would be drunk of course, but I feel that I would be held to making my thing out of the detritus of a New Year's party. =P

Tease, tease... Its an airplane's wing. The text reads, the "Long Haul". Don't guess at what's going along with it, as you'll probably come up with something a lot better than what I'll build. ^^'

* Yes, I did go to a party for Hogmonay ...But we played with boardgames, and nobody would allow me to cannibalise them for this competition. I know, I'm sorry. Hopefully it won't reflect poorly on your judging.

Oh yeah, and uh... happy new year people. Get to it!

Thanks a lot guys, I was thinking the last days for a piece of terrain to house my DKoK, this competition is a major inctentive.
The idea is to build something completely from scratch from mostly "unorthodox matterials". The "canvas" for the tent is made by a cotton-wooven-cloth-like piece that is from an airplaine seat and has great texture. The rest are cotton swabs and st@rbucks stirring sticks.
The next step is to cover the inside with resin 'cause it is too soft to work with and perhaps respray the Imperial Eagles, I just hope I won't ruin it with the resin...

Post by: Littletower

@Camkierhi: Thaks, will try to keep up.

@JackDarkmoore: Great looking tent, and nice weathering. Question: You mentioned later you were going to cover it in resin. To make it harder/sturdier, I guess? Have you considered using PVA instead? If the cloth cotton based, it should adhere OK, and it might be easier to work with

@alabamaheretic: Rushed to post the first WIP, maybe this shows a bit better where I'm - trying - to go.

@Snrub: The main structure is made from a cut-off of PVC water drain pipe, 100 mm diam (120 would have probably been better, but this is what I had laying around!)

Some progress:

Cheers.

Wow, everyone's already started, This is what happens when your internet goes down for 3 days, looks like i'm playing Catch up .

I'm going with my first idea, which is slightly more Diorama than Terrain, but could still be used as both.
I wont go into any detail's yet as I'm not sure I'll be able to do it,
but as soon as I have something I'll post some WIP here.

Ok.. I'm a little ebarased about it but I'll share it with you... I was out of PVA glue and because of the holidays I couldn't buy some until tomorrow.
Tomorrow seems too far away...

Nevertheless, I'm waiting for the resin to cure right now so no more progress for today...

@JackDarkmoore: . That's fine, bad time to run out of supplies indeed! Hope the resin works out fine then, will be waiting to see how it comes out.

To Camkierhi: The aerial on the back of the building is made of a real 1:1 POP rivet. How many extra points do I get for that ?

Setting the bar pretty low here, I've painted up my first piece. There's some more WIP shots of stuff in my blog and an iffy blurb about what I'm going for. The jist though is that it'll be a rest stop for pilots travelling between wasteland settlements, a home to those that brave the inhospitable deserts of the central US dustbowl. That ...fits the theme right?

Uh, that, or... an Ork did it.

cool tent jack!

and I still don´t get the wing piece wyrmalla...but it looks very cool nevertheless...

also... I finally got my act together to start with an entry for this one...

it will be a nice log cabin... and it will be made from wood...and I try to be really artisan about it...like it would have been hewn as it should ...
but let me show you...:

this is how I started...the "logs" are 15cm long...and it will be a square log cabin thus...

raw materials

combined shots...with mean sergeant for scale...

no windows ...yet...or doors.... the roof will be separate to be taken off...as I plan to make the interior into a nice fitting scene to the theme of the comp...

thoughts?...

cheers, vik

@ Viktor von Domm

Oi! ...Its ah ... The wing's to go at the front of the little plot I'm making, youknow, as a sort of entrance sign. It is not ...a random wing. Bigger picture people!

Are you going for a sort of American Civil War era log cabin thingy? I seem to recall seeing an article about such buildings and that happens to resemble the example one is all.

Ok made a start on my entry.

I wasn't sure if you wanted a pre-build parts shot Cam. So I took one anyway. Better to be safe then sorry aye?

This isn't all the parts mind. This is only what I've gathered so far.

Some 4mm thick corrugated card.
The plastic lid off a (very tasty) store brought cake. <------ Recycling materials. Bonus points Pl0x.

And a shot of the walls after they've been resized and cleaned up.

Pretty much, and as you might have guessed from the walls, it's going to be a tower. Pretty much just gonna be an old observation tower that has become a snipers nest.
I will be putting progress up in my terrain blog for those who are interested. There is a link in my sig.

at dave... I assure you there will be a stove... but not skirts wearing officers...I know it will be a...wait for it...drag...but I gotta concentrate...

also...I will later on update...but the plan is to make it a merger of old and futuristic... a log cabin with some more modern stuff inside... not really completely planned out yet...but it will be in essence one small base for my praetorian stempunky army ...so some tie- ins to be expected to happen... and if time allows it will get some scenic outside additions too...

at jack...have no fear... airbrushed aquilla looks super!

at wyrmalla...now I have quite a good idea...I am thinking about Bartertown now

at snurb...that cake container looks very promising... and I now wonder where the cardboard stuff will be used....

and then the floor was done too today...:

Heh, and all built from the same Imperial Muniturom Standard Issue M sized Wooden Logs. Good work, its looks very homely for the front (if I am humming Grizzly Adams theme right now). Though for the 40k universe that definitely needs a big Imperial Aquila over the door and the skulls of former officers in the loft.

I have asked the same question to myself.
According to my research many WW1& WW2 tent did not require any external supprot from cabling. Perhaps not of this size, but I thought that this would be standard squad equipment so it had to be portable, light and effective. The external "power unit" provides power for equipment, clima and pressure stabilization in hostile environments. Also the required space for deployment with cabling support would be about twice of what is needed without it.

A secondary use could be to conceal a Centaur from the enemy. I think that it fits...

I have absolutely no idea if I'll have the time to get something finished before the deadline, what with work, drinking, wallpaper stripping, drinking, decorating, drinking, hanging a wall aquarium and most importantly drinking taking up my free time.

So with that said I'm entering the planning stages now. Because even if I don't finish it on time, at least I'll have some terrain at the end of it.

They are real... It is a fabric of some kind (cotton I presume), it came from those disposable fabrics that are on the head rest of the airplane seats. Sorry I cannot explain this better ... A photo may clear things up (not the pillows, the other white thing where our head touches the seat http://www.chicagocbm.com/clinic//wp-content/uploads/2010/04/airplane-seats.jpg)

I guess it's time i started putting some cards on the table!

So starting with a mess of bent plastic, card and with help from a cup of tea...

...a little building is born

I've started work on the interior, not quite certain yet what will go inside, guess I'll deal with that when the shell is done.

Spot on Vik

The windows started as 9 square holes carefully cut out of a sheet of 0.5mm plasticard, with thin strips stuck either side of the spars to add strength and detail. Despite that one did break not sure if I should leave it broken or not yet...

Anyway after that the sheet was laminated between two additonal sheets with square holes removed for the window so it's inset within the wall. Unfortunatly I botched the laminating causing the plastic to bend and warp outof shape. To fix that I added an additional layer of stiff, thick card to the outside which seems to have made it, whilst not perfect, good enough.

I don't fully understand what you mean, I had been thinking of adding a door but how could I make it operational using the above method?
My idea was to try making a little hinge inside with a separate door.

IF I have time to paint this, I'm not too bothered I just want a reason to finish this building

(second time writing this, thank you windows)

Hello all.
I am relatively new around here but I saw the contest and thought I would use it as a push to speed up my projects and get some additional feedback. Hopefully I can finish in time. Can I blame it on my kids if I don't finish??
I prefer recycled materials as much as possible. For my project I will be using a Cadbury Fingers chocolate cookie tin amongst several empty giftcards. It's great plastic card as long as you are using smaller pieces.
I look forward to seeing everyones finished work.

I've been focussed too much on coursework these past few days to get much done (and what time I've had has been painting other stuff. Yes, I'm cheating on you lot with my Fallout stuff. No, I'm not even sorry a little bit). Slowly at least I'm making working on my roadmap for my submission at least. This is still needs a base and some more tatt, but still, setting the bar low as usual. Its a place to store supplies to sit beside the main feature ...I think.

@Cam--go ahead and add me. i will try to knock something together, as my second and third ideas have already been done so far, but my first (and best?) idea hasn't been tackled yet--at least insofar as the WIP pics posted here indicate...sitll have a month and a half...even with trying to buy a house and working 55+ hours a week, i might be able to get something done.

just have to figure out how to get rivets in there somehow...

I am actually further along than this image. This is just a picture of the tin that I will be using. I have used several of these tins and like them because it gives a simple consistent base for each building. It also gives the appearance of a cookie cutter building that I imagine Imperial worlds initially settle with and then replace or modify over time.

Interesting parts! Is the tin embossed? If so will the teddy get a cadian paint job?

I actually like the idea Peasant, lets see some more..

PS is that your leg bottom of the picture, if so please see a doctor!

Hahahahaha. No not embossed. I'd be able to deal with the soldiers, sort of, but I'm not sure how 'grim dark' the bear could be. Hahahaha

This is a picture of one of several that I have completed prior. The paint needs some work as well as my photo quality. They are done with my phone I'm working on using my actual camera for better quality But I am slow..

P.S.Hahahahaha...yeah..It's my leg..under a blanket, It's winter and I loathe the cold.

LoER Terrain Competition:round 8. the RESULTS!!! @ 2014/01/17 14:03:03

Post by: Littletower

JackDarkmoore: Glad you like it.

The vents are made from the PVC nuts for electrical tubing couplings and hand-made fan (1mm thick styrene circle, radially cut without reaching the centre, and gently twisted to shape the blades).

On the inside, the rim is made from a ring cut from PVC pipe (electrical tubing again) and mosquito wire mesh for the grill.

Edit: The upward going pipes are from umbrella-like chocolate lollipops (Cubs cheerfully provided those!)

Made some progress today.

Cut out the both the floor and roof of the observation tower

and cut out the windows. The semi-circle windows are going to be cut up to make shattered windows while the rectangular window is staying intact but has some bullet holes drilled out.

I also shortened the tower by 5cm. It was too tall at 30cm so I cut it down to 25cm.

I saw in the Rules that it is open to all game systems, but this seems to be 40k-centric? Is that usually the case in these contests?

LoER Terrain Competition:round 8. the RESULTS!!! @ 2014/01/20 10:18:16

Post by: Camkierhi

It tends to be 40k, but I was hoping for some more variety, and although some of what you see is 40k ish, I could see it being used in different games systems, Wyrmalla's is not 40k, though could be used in it. And certainly one of the biggest bonuses of these competitions is new techniques being shown off.

By all means, anyone can enter an entry from any game system, or just a model for the sake of modelling. Could be fantasy, could be AVP, as long as it hits the brief, you are good.

Post by: Wyrmalla

Mine's for 7Tv, though my own post apocalyptic take on it. Yes, people are mostly making 40k builds, but then again, this is a 40k centric site. Make whatever you want. Certainly it may be more interested than a skull house of skulls.

LoER Terrain Competition:round 8. the RESULTS!!! @ 2014/01/20 11:50:58

Post by: Red Harvest

Yeah, moar skulz. <sigh> There is a healthy enough WHFB presence here too, I've noted.

Well, thank you for the answers gentlemen. I'm going to give this some thought. I have a few ideas for accommodations. They won't be gray, Gothic, or ruined. There will be no skulls. I find that iconography to be, erm, distasteful. YMMV.

I only now noticed this contest. Normally I stick to the Infinity sub-forum. So, not sure if 39 days will be enough, but I'll at least try to make a start. Now, where did I leave my exacto knife...

OK, I had many inquiries regarding the method I use to build sandbag walls. So I decided to make a brief tutorial about the subject.
The method used is not a sophisticated one and I cannot claim originality or copyright.

Material used

FIMO clay (I suppose that it works with any type of modeling clay but I use this brand)
Piece of textured cloth (personal taste goes here)
Piece of gloves (optional but useful)

Paints, ordered by use (Personally I use Vallejo)

Black (for basecoat)
Brown (heavy drybrush)
Yellow (light drybrush)
Brown wash (oil/acrylic) apply freely all over the model
Highlight with light brown or even white

1. Pickup some of the clay and work it with your fingers to get warm and soften up.
2. Make a sausage a couple of millimeters thinner than the size you want to achieve.
3. Use the textured cloth to roll the clay so the texture transfers to the clay.
4. Flatten the clay with your fingers.
5. While still covered use a slashing tool to cut partly equal sized pieces .
6. Use the same tool and press gently to the side of each bag to make the sewing line.
7. Handle each piece and build your wall (gloves are useful in this step)
8. Let it dry (or cook it) according to instructions

Okay, so I gave it some thought. These days, everybody uses re-purposed ISO shipping containers for all manner of things, like barracks. (I know several people who have lived in them) However, shipping containers are a bit too ubiquitous in Infinity. They make convenient table filler. So I figured make something along those lines, modular barracks. And of course, It's hexagonal. Here are the first WIPS/mock-ups.

In scale, they are about ~10' per side, and ~300 square feet inside. The idea is two are sleeping modules and the center one is the galley/break room etc.

I also started a terrrain thread here, if anybody wants to know what sort of terrain I can build. Here it is.

@ JackDarkmoore: nice work on those sandbags.

Started work on the external details, 100% skull free decorative arches. I'm not sure about the buttressing it seems maybe a little to bold but ah well in for a penny ... I'll be keeping the sides simple with some minor detailing on the top edge

a strip of arches in progress, I'll have 10 in total; 2 front and back, 3 each side.

Hey guys
Sorry it took so long, but I've finally got some stuff to share.

So I started with this.

Spoiler:

But I didn't quite agree with how it was going, so I made a few changes.

Spoiler:

Then I started to paint up the trooper.

Spoiler:

He's nearly ready to be placed in the scene. Next I painted up the tarp.

Spoiler:

And then I rubbed it with some Antonian Camoshade.

Spoiler:

Then I took some of this.

Spoiler:

And then I applied it to the base for some added miser- I MEAN DETAIL! Added detail.

Spoiler:

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? Criticism? I'd love to hear any of it.

@OneManNoodles: The base is a 30 cm square, 5 mm thick, MDF board. The raised mound is made of expanded polystyrene, with the edges slightly bevelled. Covered in dry wall filler, with sand, litter box gravel and cork stones added on top. Bigger rock outcrop is a piece of plaster rubble.

Wooden skewers for the fence-to-be posts.

As of yesterday:

Building is looking great, BTW.

I have some more work done on my League Contest piece.

Spoiler:
As you may recall from the previous pictures, I had some nice water effect on here created by mixing white glue and blue ink, but that dried into this.

I know, right? Completely gone.

So I tried something else that I saw somewhere here on Dakka.

I placed down a thing a thin layer of hot glue, then put some blue ink over that.

I did that twice to kinda create some layering. I hope it looks okay.

Then I started on the trooper. He was already painted, so I ran some green ink over his uniform to add some detail.

Then I painted up the base a bit more.

Next, my poor miserable guardsman needed some meager warmth. I cut a strip of fabric and dunked it in what remained of my nuln oil to give a used look. Then I just handed it to him, and he quickly wrapped himself in it.

Then I layered some white glue over that in order to get it to look wet and cling to my guardsman a little better.

Then I placed him into his little scene of misery.

At this point I also decided that the "water" on the base looked a little too dull, so I put some white glue over it that when its dry I'm hoping that it will make it a little glossy. I don't have any ardcoat or testors gloss so I work with what I got.

Then I put the tarp over his head.

And glue it to the edge of the base.

Thusly he is largely done. He just needs some final touch ups and his piece of fluff that goes with everything I create.

Thoughts? Opinions? Criticism? I'd love to hear what you think.

Well that's a relief. Couldn't imagine cutting that many bricks would be at all fun. How many bricks total are there?

Based on real life commitments I'm unsure if I'll manage to finish my entry by the deadline. Sure that's four weeks away, but... well that's a lot of drinking that I intend to be doing. So we'll have to see if I can manage to finish it, or if its just demoted to material for my Fallouty Blogg.

So much awesome stuff here. I'm going to have to try and pull off all the stops ... again.

@ Littletower: that looks great, thanks for the info, it's pretty sizeable, mine should sit in a 16x21cm rectancgle when I geta round to makeing the base.

By Odin's beard! Vik and hk1x1 you guys are awesome
now 3 weeks and 3 days to finish it . Really tho both your works are already incredible.

With Vik's entry mostly wood, Hk's is plaster and mine made from plastic, is someone making one from sheet metal?

An update on my lowly entry:

The sides are assembled, I've added the rest of the buttresses, I thought I'd cast some in resin to try and get though them quicker and at least it means they are (more or less) Identical.
The round vent on the side is a resin copy of a 3d printed design of mine (see my p&m blog).
I've started on the window frames and I should have that and the corner edging done in a day or 2.

Yes I am interior decorating it I've got printed posters some stuff to go inside that I've had lying around.

looks like the competition has finally started then

Nice looking Stockade VVD. Perhaps you could name it Fort Courage (an F Troop reference)?

That is a fantastic tower. But does it have indoor plumbing?

This thread is filling up with win. Gotta love it

Anyway, here's what I have at this point.

Need to finish the roofs on the two other shipping container homes/barracks, then onto the exterior details (ie doors and a few bits) then the scatter. Trust me guys, in Infinity it is next to impossible to have enough scatter, and I want this little habitation to be playable. You can see a bit of the scatter starting-- an HVAC unit and what will be, uh, well, a porta-potty/shower. If time remains, a comm tower and a power cell/generator. And interior scatter-- a few cots, foot lockers, equipment lockers etc. And maybe a few other bits and pieces for inside and out. I reckon the 18th is the drop dead deadline for building. That'll leave 10 days for painting. And for a final shot....

That's 70 pounds the little bugger is supporting. Nifty?

Keep up the good work guys.

@ OneManNoodles: That's looking great so far, and if your previous competiton entry is anything to go by,
then I'm sure this will look amazing when finished.

Looking at all the different materials being used in this comp,
we have Plastic, Wood, Plaster and Card.... Could these be the four Elements of the Terrain builder .

@ Red Harvest: I love the attention to detail on those habitats, interior and exterior,
and 70 pounds... that's some sturdy building work .

No worries. And not so brave. There were no minis inside

It's a good way to prevent/minimize warping while the glue dries...though I usually use just one ten pound weight. Also makes a good clamp to hold the piece in place so I can use two hands on it. I do it all the time.

It is really rubbish, I have just not seen anything better.

The only thing I found that works with it is to use thin plasticard and just try and score gently and repeatedly,
for thicker bits you need to score on both sides making a small hole at the centre so its aligned, then do as above.

LoER Terrain Competition:round 8. the RESULTS!!! @ 2014/02/09 21:29:27

Post by: Red Harvest

Same here, but I ended up reinforcing the compass cutter so it didn't 'wobble', and pushing the needle deeper into the plastic so it was not so much longer than the blade. Finding replacement blades won't be fun.

hey red harvest...I would like to see how you reinforced yours...such hints are always very valuable!

and noodels... I have done so too... I quite often made a spiral instead of a circle... that´s why it currently collects dust^^...
there are different circuit cutters out there... just waaaay more expensive... foamcutters could be a more reliable way to score the first lines...but as stated way more expensive... and red harvest... cuiriosly I have stumbled over new baldes quite often ... but never needed yet to replace the current blade

cool...does this mean this is the finished entry LT?...

Not yet, painting for one could use some more work - The building itself hasn't been highlighted, much less touched up, for one - and I'd like to add some more colour to the base if possible, either green grass or moss, or some scattered bits, to break up the tans.

And there's always the furniture question...

Remember BTW that finished pics should not be posted here before the Comp's closure, as by Camkierhi's request:
Camkierhi wrote:Please feel free to post WIP shots and to bandy ideas around on this thread, we would however ask you to refrain from posting final shot here, (think Skalk had that one right).

I present to you:

'Home Away From Home'

Spoiler:

ACHOO!

Mills sniffed loudly and wrapped his blanket tighter around himself. This planet was miserable. Always raining. Permanent cloudy skies and a terrible wetness that permeated everything. Mills sighed and looked up and down the line. Everyone looked just as miserable as him. Huddled in groups shivering or moving about, trying to get the blood pumping.

He missed his home. A sunny Agri-world where the work was hard but the feeling of accomplishment was high. Here, on this drowning ball of mud... harder work for no accomplishment.

The fighting had ground to a stand still in the last day as the rain picked up. Aside from the occasional mortar, the rebels seemed to be as beaten by the weather as he was and everything slowed down. The worst was when the sun set and the chill set in. At least one person in his platoon froze to death in the night. He grew weary of sitting or kneeling and chose to lay down, never to rise again.

Mills leaned forward and peered up, looking around his makeshift tarp that had been cut from the charred remnants of a tent. The clouds seemed dark and angry. He sighed and sat back again. His mind dwelled on his home. Large fields of grain, gently swaying in the breeze, the sun on his face. He sighed and opened his eyes again and was greeted by the same dreary everything. Then, as he watched, the clouds parted briefly and the sun peered down through the clouds before being engulfed again. Mills smirked.

"There are worse places..." he muttered as he lowered his helmet and shut his eyes. At least here, in his little home away from home, he could get some well needed rest.

He's a guardsman. Something will be along soon enough to put him out of his misery.

Anyway I got the hex punch from Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-Crafts-159070-1001-Squeeze-Hexagon/dp/B00E3FSIQQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1392066954&sr=8-2&keywords=fiskars+squeeze+punch%2C+medium+-+hexagon

The hex is 25mm across. There are two larger sizes too. The usual cereal box thickness -~0.3mm is a bit much for it, but thinner stock is easily cut. Haven't tried it on any sort of plasticard, but I doubt it would produce good results. The squeeze handles are plastic and I'm afraid they might snap if you tried to squeeze them too hard to cut through the plasticard.

That hex tool looks interesting, I may have to find one for "research", plasticard is much softer than card it'd also not blunt the blade as quickly I would think.

Yes. I earlier posted work in progress pictures. They're also in my P&M blog in my signature.

Its a tan piece of fabric that came in a cheap model set I got from Hobby Lobby. I cut it to shape and painted it. The one wrapped around the solider was just dunked in what remained of my nuln oil. and the wrung out. It didn't dye it too well though.

Instead of sugar, you can spray the wood with Easy-Off oven cleaner-- the lye reacts w/ the wood and darkens it. Might make it a bit fuzzy too. Ammonia fumes work too, but I am not going to recommend that.

Sorry to hear you're out Noodles... but do finish things when you can. I'm curious about the interior decor.

I hope to have everything painted in time, but I'll go with what I do finish. RL is getting to be quite a bother, again.

I am Interested. And a link? My dakka search fu is, well, uhm, pitiful :(

Steampunk can be much more than brass and gears. And no reason why you need to be pure steampunk.

It's an old woodworker trick. The lye in the Oven Cleaner artificially ages the wood. If you've ever heard of fumed oak you may know that it is a reference to ammonia fumes. Both ammonia and lye are bases (as opposed to acids).

Well peoples after some deep thought I would like to offer a small extension. giving people the weekend to finish up. The competition would end on the 2nd March 2014 at midnight. (GMT)

The work done here is amazing and I do not want to upset anyone, so please voice your opinions on this. I feel it would be a shame for some to drop out for the sack of a weekend push to finish.

I do thank everyone for there efforts, and look forward to seeing the final line up. Speaking of which....final pics. Please could all competitors NOT post finals here, that may just put people off. Instead could you PM a link or your pics to myself or Ruglud (preferably Ruglud) as he has very kindly volunteered to compile the final listings.

As to new entries. By all means you can enter all the way upto the finishing time, however the rules do ask for a WIP shot within the competition time frame. I am afraid you can't enter that dolls house you have been working on for the last 15 years, I would add, please read the rules. They do say you can enter part built etc. but it must be completed within the comp.

Thank you all for making this a great competition, good luck to you all.

Well, you guys are fantastic. In light of that, I'm going to submit anyway, just to participate. Thanks again for doing this. The community is stronger when we can all show our work to each other and get feedback and reinforcement. So here goes:

Spoiler:

Initial WIP

A bit of paint

While it's not totally in line with the competition, my rationale is that a squad of Eldar Rangers have been ordered to scout ahead for the advancing Craftworld forces. They've taken refuge in this wreck of an Imperial freighter where they're awaiting extraction/further orders.

Good luck everyone! Thanks for sharing your fantastic work.
