a bit lightenen up the piece would do no harm... also... i detect some too regular shaped patches due to no wash?...right wing for instance...
for the statue... verdigris....!!!!!! puuuuhhhhlllleeeeeaaaasssseee^^
i got quite a convincing effect through a mix of ice blue (GW) and scorpion green (GW) and this diluted heavily... very watery ...and each colour after the other... but you´ll see how this work when you do it...
The technique I know involves scraping the edge of the pencil along the edge you want to highlight. It might work on curving lines, but I've never seen it done that way. Give it a try, I guess, and let us know how it works.
School has kept me away from the paint brush this last week or so.
My buddy gave me his Relic Knights Black Diamond Faction to paint so I'll start working on those tomorrow.
I need to finish up my own Relic Knights as well, just a few spots to touch up and then figure out basing for them. I'll probably do that this week in between working on my buddy's stuff.
In exchange for painting, I get the start to my Cult Mechanicus army. I have the boxes here but I'm not going to even look at the sprues until I'm done with his stuff.
I paint slow enough, I don't need any distractions...
My wife came home with an airbrush for me last night!!
AC Moore was having an employee appreciation week so their discount was higher for the week. Someone brought in a coupon from JoAnn's another craft store we have around here and she was able to get one of the Badger airbrushes at 60% plus her discount off. I think she said it ended up being $40 Of course, I still have to solve the problem of the compressor but isn't that awesome?!? I'm quite pleased.
Airbrushes are nice, but they aren't simple. Do yourself the favor of boning up on them with videos for use and especially maintenance. Assuming this is the first airbrush, of course (but then you did mention no compressor so...).
I'm sure others will tell you differently, but I just use a craftsman pancake compressor with some creatively arranged fittings to adapt the teeny airbrush hose. I did get a moisture trap/filter though I dunno if it makes a huge difference. About the same cost as the dinky airbrush compressors but bigger motor and larger tank. YMMV of course, and there's nothing wrong with what everyone else uses (obviously ).
Good luck with the airbrush, they're fun if a bit finicky.

Oddly every bit as fussy as a brush just different.
You still have to figure out paint consistency depending on what you are doing.
Light cleaning during painting.
More careful cleaning when finished.
Paint loading of brush (in this case psi).
Size of brush (needle/nozzle size).
Your level of assembly preference prior to paint may change.
Best advice I can give is do not start with a 0.2 nozzle unless you are spraying inks or well filtered good quality paints, you have been warned.
I got my school stuff done a little earlier than usual today so I got to do some hobby work.
I got the Black Diamonds all build and primed. My friend wants them painted with the armor gray and purple for the accents.
I'll have to sit to down and see how to make that happen. The tank should be easy. It's the most adorable little tank ever!
As for the Aquilla, I think I have the metal dark enough but the stones and gravel all around it are too dark now. Maybe a drybrush of some lighter grays? I dunno. What do you think?
I started the statue with metallic green and a flat orange kind of all over. I'm not sure how to bring it all together now because I do still want it to look work and rusted.
I just use the phone in my camera for taking pics of my minis but I want to take better pics. Any suggestions on a not too horribly expensive camera?
I like the statue almost as is. Maybe a VERY watered down wash to just try to blend some of the sharper contrasts together.
I would definitely give a drybrush to the gravel around the eagle. Will allow the Aquila to stand out.
What game are your friends models from?
In regard to a camera I would actually start with a really good setup first. The camera in phones these days are actually pretty good so get a light box or similar first. Then if you want to go from there trawl eBay or other second hand places (especially after Christmas) for a potential bargain. Oh and a tripod does absolute wonders.
Thanks Archer, I will go around the aquilla again tomorrow with some grey. I think I'm going to try a green wash on the statue and depending on how that goes, a brown wash over that.
My friend's minis are from the Relic Knights game. We are starting a league soon so lots of people around here are painting Relic Knights.
I would use a VERY thin green wash. I absolutely trashed a statue I was doing with a much too heavy green wash. Had to use a lot of brown and black to bring it back in line. You may try a very subtle red wash at joins if you are seeking a different color. But again be sparing.

I do a fair bit of spray painting with my work (big stuff like the size of car panels) and it's really important to clean your equipment thoroughly. Every. Single. Time.
Paint consistency is really important as adamsouza has said. But I think you will enjoy learning and the results can be pretty flash.
I read somewhere to start spraying with only water just to get the hang of how the machine feels. That's where I'm gonna start.
Archer, I've read too, that it is important to clean the brush more frequently than you'd think you need too. I'll be sure to get my cleaner situation figured out before I start.
Adam, I don't have any airbrush specific paint yet. I'll probably try mixing up some paint milk before I buy any since I have so much paint already.
I think even the airbrush paints need thinned a bit if you're planning on spraying detailed stuff at low PSI, although, it's going to vary by brand as mentioned.
I still can't resolve the milk thing. Its not milk. It doesn't have the same chemical properties as milk, even if I get it to the same consistency I don't see it acting in the exact same way as milk, which is also going to vary based on the %/whole/skim situation. It just feels vague and misleading to me Especially in the tiny paint pot on my sotar.
I'm sure it's good advice, just doesn't work for me
The reference to the consistency of milk is supposed to be a rough guide to how thin you need the paint. You can go thicker or thinner to achieve different things. But it's a good place to start. The larger the needle in the air brush the thicker the paint can be and still go through. Although it still isn't a good idea.
But ultimately I have been spray painting on and off for more than 10 years and although the description of the consistency of milk is pretty common the best thing to do is practice. A lot.
Carlos, yes I'll be playing the Noh in the league. I'm just about done painting them. I'm also painting up a bunch of Black Diamond stuff for a buddy of mine.
I don't play the games you're talking about so I don't know the resemblance.
Thraxas, I found them to be a bit difficult to put together. They have horrible mold lines that, after a while, I just left because they are in precarious places and hard to remove. They are significantly harder to deal with than GW minis which is the majority of what I have. Very fun to paint though!!
We used one of the scenarios from the book. I can't remember what it was called. The one where one person is trying to cast some huge spell and the other person is trying to stop them from casting it.
I played my partially painted Ogres instead of my Goblins because I wanted to have fewer models to transport. I played against Lizardmen, with him as the one casting the spell and me trying to stop it.
I had a blast! He won when he killed my tyrant. Since that was my only hero, I no longer had any way to stop the spell from going off. I have no idea if the army's were evenly matched. We had the same number of wounds but he had two more war scrolls and WAY more models. It didn't feel bad though. My guys were brutal in combat compared to his.
I'm looking forward to playing again and to trying out the orcs and goblins with these new rules as well.
I've also been playing and enjoying Relic Knights. I need to hit my painting table hard bc I'm playing with several half painted forces right now. Once I get back to painting, I'll work on taking pics of my painting progress and my games.
Good to see you gave AoS a go. I have yet to manage it myself. I am interested what will happen in time as players begin to figure out ways of balancing it for their own tastes.
Looking forward to seeing some more of your painting progress.
That is a pretty cool ogre scheme! I guess you probably don't need a crazy amount of ogres in that game (don't know much about it but it seems vaguely skirmishy).
Archer, I've enjoyed the games I've played so far. It has only been 2 though. I've lost one and the second one we ran out of time before we finished so we called it a draw.
The one that I lost felt pretty balanced. I played against Lizardmen (or whatever they're called now) and we were pretty close in the number of wounds. The dice were very much on his side that day but it was a great game. The ogres hit very hard, it's super fun to smash them into combat.
The game I played this week, I was teamed up with a skaven player and we were playing against Daemons. I think the daemons had more wounds than we did and had multiple casters and could keep adding units. It was a pretty rough battle. I would have liked to have time to finish it but we are still pretty new and slow. I'm looking forward to playing again.
Thraxas - Blogre! They are quite smashy in battle. And having 4 wounds a piece is pretty sick. If I happen to lose a model in combat and then fail battleshock though, it is brutal because you lose whole models not just wounds.

4 wounds each?! Ouch. Gonna soak up a lot a lot of damage there.
Do Ogors (new GW name for them lol) have anything that buffs their Bravery stat at all? Or make them immune to Battle Shock?
The tyrant has a command ability that you can deal a unit d3 mortal wounds and then they don't take battleshock for as long as the tyrant is alive. It's pretty good.
I really like where you have gone with the skin tone on your Ogres. Is he metal or Finecast? I had the metal ogre characters when they were first released and they are some heavy blighters.
So the question is...how much gore do you plan to put on him?
Thraxas - He is the old metal one. He is one heavy ! I'm going to splatter him up some but I'm probably not going to do too much more work on him. This model really creeps me out for some reason.
Warboss_W - Thanks!
I played another game with them today against a different set of Lizardmen and just smashed through them. That combined with him rolling miserably for battleshock and it was just a beating.
I still feel like I need to play a million more games to really get all the nuances right, but that's ok!
Congrats on the win. I have yet to get my ogres onto the tabletop unfortunately, my gaming group isn't huge on the medieval side of things. Some day.
You have done a great job on the apron. Looks like real cloth. I personally have never warmed to the aesthetics of the butchers, both in background and appearance. Do you run him as a Butcher or Slaughter Master? Do they still have them?
Archer - I run him as just a butcher. There's no listing for a slaughter master. Having the ability to cast magic has been useful. I haven't used The Maw spell yet though.
I like the game. I think it's worth checking out. Especially if you already have mini's to play with. I haven't bought any new stuff for it. We have a pretty chill group that plays. If I were playing with people who were trying to break the game, I wouldn't like it as much.
Very sorry to hear that, it is good that if your painting mojo has gone you are still in the hobby and actively gaming though. I am sure that the desire to paint again will come soon enough.
Sorry to hear that, mate. Take the time you need for the other things in your life and then I'm sure one day you'll want to paint again -probably all of a sudden. Take care of yourself.
I give up painting most months of the year. It becones a chore when you are not properly motivated to do it.
Sorry to hear that you and your wife were not able to make it work. It's tough making it work. I'm the youngest of 5 brothers and only 2 of us were able to keep our marriages together. My only brother to keep his marriage intact cheated the system by invoking "until death do us part" and dying young.
On the plus side, once your feeling better about the situation, it's easier than ever to meet people over the internet. Online dating sites allow you to screen people for compatible beliefs and goals, before getting emotionally invested in each other.

For obvious reasons, I never liked this turn of phrase..
Good to hear you are still poking your head in now and then. The Ogres sound brutal in AoS. I am sorely under qualified to offer any advice for relic Knights.
