Yep, just for you, Phyr . That's the one I was waffling the most about of these first 4 colors, so glad to hear it impresses! The person taking these pictures didn't have the panels on-hand to show in the cubes, so I'll take pictures with the panels tomorrow when I receive them . It will be interesting to see what people think once the panels are in them, as I expect some will like the more muted black and burgundy style, and others the in your face purple and orange ones! There will be two more initial color offerings (which I am leaning towards olive green and "imperial grey" on, thoughts there appreciated). And up to a half dozen further colors if funding goes well in the campaign!
Edit: Copying over the pictures due to page rollover!

KS date will follow pretty quick after you get hold of these?
Yes, I've actually already submitted the Kickstarter for approval, and have 10 blogs / tournament players / etc that I am sending out ModCube packages to tomorrow as soon as these arrive to me! Assuming I approve of these samples the launch date will definitely be on Tuesday (May 5th). I will confirm that tomorrow when the samples are in-hand!
Orange works for me. Will tie in with my Nomads, and make it slightly less likely for me to forget them on friends gaming tables.
And then red for Xwing Rebels....Black for Empire...damn.
No no... you guys are going in the wrong direction. After all the production headaches, and delivery nightmare that 10,000 kickstarter orders will cause, RiTides is going to do something that no one has ever done before....
ModNaughts.... modular, zero-sided tokens. They can be whatever you need at the moment.
Mark that unit that Jinked in your oppenents shooting phase? Now it is twin-linked, instead.
Use them as wounds taken AND wounds remaining ON THE SAME MODEL AT THE SAME TIME!
TFG at my gamestore has been product testing them for years now.
Packing up the samples to send on to 10 independent reviewers / tournament players / blogs today!
I apologize for the radio silence, been slammed getting these out in time today. Will make a thorough reply to the above comments later tonight, and have nice closeup pictures of the samples tomorrow morning
I took part of the day off to get these out so a few players can use them in the X-wing regional and a 40kGT this weekend! That pic is actually from the local library where I sequestered myself to do the sorting
plastictrees - Yes, the red was intended for "rebel scum" Vanguard - That is a great idea for a banner, thanks! I may try my hand at tweaking it this weekend, but hadn't gotten to any yet, so I really appreciate it!
Alpharius / Piston Honda - I think purple and orange are a nice pairing . Blue is certainly coming, but may not be in the initial / base goal offerings.
MasterSlowPoke / Dark Severance - Yeah, I personally plan to mix and match cubes halves, I love it but I know it's not for everybody!
Snrub - Anpu-adom has it right, it will launch on Tuesday!
Solar_lion - Thanks, and thank you so much for your help at AdeptiCon
Regarding early birds, I actually have figured out a way to offer them that I personally really enjoyed in the projects I've backed - a "first to ship" tier! It gives folks who have been watching and patiently waiting for launch a bonus for jumping in, but doesn't make the deal worse for anybody who comes after. There will be two early bird tiers at the two "sweet spots", $55 (2 ModCube sets, which with the Kickstarter bonus is 18 cubes!) and $100 (4 ModCube sets, or 36 cubes counting the bonus cubes).
For your other other choices I'd certainly be interested in a green. But I do play Orks.
Although the black and red ones would go with my black with red BA successors.

Well, count me in on the $55 level, and I'll be working tons of overtime so I can afford the $100 level in the future!
RiTides. I am more then willing to work on the banner for you if you've got any changes you'd like. It's your banner of course, but I'm willing to help out!
I'm in at the $55 level, even though I wish I could go deeper. As much as I like the colors, I'm going with the black. Just want them to fit any of my armies.
If you're the type of person who doesn't like mixing their cereals... close your eyes
Of course, you can also get them all as a single color! But if you get more than one color, or get the Kickstarter-exclusive extra cube frame in a different color, you'll have the option to get a little crazy
Varag - What kind of green would interest you - does an olive / military green make sense for orks, too, or would they want a more traditional / primary green color?
Ramos - These first articles fit together very smoothly, and can be pulled apart really nicely! I am talking to the moldmaker about a small tweak to the latch tolerances, as I would like the final production run to be something in between my prototypes (too difficult to open) and these first articles (slightly too easy to open). This is common with injection molds and is a very small tweak. It does mean that my elaborate failure testing may wait until later on in the campaign when I get the next round of first articles, though (they will keep sending me them until I fully approve the mold and final production run - but these are 99% there!)
ced - Could you describe more of what you mean for panels that would work for something like Zombicide?
Vanguard - Thanks, I will do that once I get a chance to breathe!
Anpu-adom - Many people will want just black, I may want it myself as it just makes the border a non-entity at that point. But honestly, I'm probably going to mix and match . I particularly like any cube I have configured differently to have a different frame color, so it's easy to know which cube I'm picking up.
Ah yes, I should get some pics of all the combinations - I also like a "Halloween style" black and orange although the black and maroon are perfect for my flesh tearers (blood angels that use a darker red) army!
I may actually have the maroon color darkened just a bit for the production run - I've matched it to a set of pantone colors and it is exactly what I'd specified, but because the material is somewhat glossy (which makes them look really good) it feels brighter than I was aiming for (a dark, Rebel maroon color).
My thought for the next two colors is a sky blue and an olive / military green. What do you guys think of that? It's been suggested to me to avoid duplicating the panel colors / shades, which I think is a good idea. If the campaign goes well, I'll likely have 12 colors total, but I want to prioritize the more popular ones first!
I like being able to mix the colors. That way in x-wing when your flying a tight formation you'll be able to differentiate which tie has which markers attached.
As for future colors I'd say try matching them to the colors of your inserts instead of by game system colors.
Oh, I just meant that since you were making these flat plastic squares, gamers may want them without the cube frame itself, since they're blingier than cardboard tokens.
LITKO is best known for its plastic tokens, although I don't like how they look -- not sf enough??
Have you considered making any of the imagery in a regular old black and white? Like black background, white text? I was thinking that would look outstanding inside the orange cubes for really high contrast.
Not sure if that color combination has been suggested yet, I haven't read a bunch of the posts above just yet. They look great though man!
Varag - What kind of green would interest you - does an olive / military green make sense for orks, too, or would they want a more traditional / primary green color?
I would like olive green. Although I may not be the best person to ask about Orks, because whilst I've played them since 2nd, I've never liked the bright green skin painted by the studio, or other manufacturers. Mine are quite dark. Black primer and Catachan Green (or equivalent dark green) base colour and a dark brown wash. So olive/military green would suit me quite well, but others might like a brighter green. Any other Ork players out there wanting green? If so, chime in with your preference. Help the man out.
Thanks for the color thoughts, guys, it is very helpful! I've taken the day for admin work and then finalizing the content on the Kickstarter page but will try to toss up a few more pics later!
Orlando - Okay, I'll consider pink but I blame you!
Ced - Got it, I will definitely be selling the panels by themselves later on, but likely not through the Kickstarter (since right now I'd like to focus on the full ModCube sets )
Phyr - I have cut some initial black and white panels, and will test it some more, thanks for the suggestion!
Shadowfinder - I'll definitely post a link, the Kickstarter will start early Tuesday morning (US EST zone).
Piston Honda - I won't have a full "choose your own panel color" system, at least I'm not planning to... but I could offer some of the single color panel sets (such as both 40k varieties) in different colors if there is interest. So you were interested in seeing the second 40k set also offered in yellow? The panel material colors I've been able to source are just what's seen here (yellow, red, blue, green) along with purple and white/black.
Varag - Thanks for the olive green vote, if anyone wants a different green, please speak up
MCRobot - I will see how a darker blue looks then, thanks!
I wouldn't mind seeing some Gray looking Cubes. I always love the "neutral" colors.
You could even go with some sort of "Gun Metal"
I know someone earlier was looking into making these into crates. Are there any plans to make texture tiles? ((Com panels, Wood planks, Metal Riveted Plates, etc))
I don't see a wide enough use for these texture tiles, but a few people might like them.
Here's an assembly video I made for those who will be giving the ModCubes their first test run this weekend! Our own Hulksmash is one of them
Now, I've mentioned in a few places that I am having one small tweak made to the injection mold - this is extremely common with the injection molding process, and is actually the whole point of their sending first articles to test. That tweak is a small increase in the height of the interior catch which helps the two halves snap together, so that they will be slightly harder to pull apart than these very first articles. We're just finalizing the details for that, and I'll update on when I expect to get the next batch of first articles in, which is what I'll do the failure testing on.
Regarding colors, grey, blue, and yellow are all on the list of planned colors.
I'll be testing some pantone colors this weekend to determine what the 6th color will be! The 4 shown above will be the starting colors, then a military green and one other color (TBD!) as the first stretch goal. I don't want anyone flipping tables so I've been leaning towards blue, but you'll just have to wait until Monday to find out!
Can the manufacturer of the cubes send you a mix of just colors to show what's available? I know from selling home improvement stuff for many years a lot of manufactures have color chips on the beaded chains to show possible colors. Is that an option?
Also I must refrain from watching videos of Dakka-Dakka-Ites, even pictures of people just thrown me off. I guess it comes from seeing Avatars of everyone and thinking about what they sound like in person, then it being completely different in the "real" world.
Thanks guys, and yeah, the click is pretty satisfying
Whalemusic, hopefully I can get some grey / yellow cubes into this campaign later on in the project, they just won't be in the initial offerings (although grey is neck-and-neck with blue as a candidate for that 6th color!)
Theophony, I do have pictures of color chips from the manufacturer, but the most useful thing is that they match Pantone colors exactly. I'll show pics of the current "actual" cube colors next to a Pantone color swatch, and for additional colors I will be painting the cubes to as close a match to the swatch as I can, and showing both together. I will also post the CMYK values in case you want to check the color yourself, since monitors can display colors a bit differently!
I thought so too Theophony, until I started using dual-monitors and things look different on each one (I know you were kidding, but I was shocked just how different some monitors can look!)
shadowfinder - Here are the pledge levels! As Theophony said, it's from earlier in the thread - I'll have a big update to the first post on Monday, as I'd been waiting to have the production parts to update all the pictures with them . I've updated the info posted earlier in the thread below... the deals have even gotten a bit better as I worked out the final costs!
$30 - A set of 8 ModCubes, plus a KS exclusive extra cube!
$55 - 2 sets of 8 ModCubes, plus 2 KS exclusives (Sweet Spot 1)
$80 - 3 sets of 8 ModCubes, plus 3 KS exclusives
$100 - 4 sets of 8 ModCubes, plus 4 KS exclusives (Sweet Spot 2)
So, the price per set is: $30 for level 1, $27.50 for level 2, $26.66 for level 3, and $25 for level 4.
At level 4, you're getting about 320 lasercut acrylic tokens and 32 ModCubes, plus the 4 exclusive extra cubes (these extras can be any color, and are intended to use with some of the spare tokens you'll have in each set). It's a pretty sweet deal, imo!
I'll likely have just two pledge levels beyond that - $150 for 6 sets, and a limited "subscriber" level for $290 for 5 complete sets and 5 empty sets of ModCubes (10 sets total), with my mailing the subscribers the next 10 panel sets as they are released (US-only due to shipping). Note that shipping will be automatically added on to each pledge level, so you can see how much shipping will be when you're checking out (as these are very small, it is not too burdensome, and we have an EU distributor lined up so that the project will be EU friendly).
It means you get a 9th cube with each set which you can select any color for! So, if you're getting a set of black cubes, you could get a single red to go with it. So, you can use it to distinguish a particular cube that you configure differently, or just as a spare.
Just note that it won't come with any extra panels - there are already at least 80 acrylic panels per set, so you'll have plenty of spares (32, in fact!) to choose from in how to equip the bonus cube

I expect to have a modcube that can sparkle.
on a serious note, can you pop these apart after you snap them in?

Really want purple as my first choice. Having orange or yellow panels are great compliments to purple. Really makes it pop.
I want my cubes to pop.
Thanks for this great suggestion, guys! I think given how the different cube colors will match different panel colors well, for the single-color themes I will offer them in red, yellow, or black.
See the black Scifi Infantry / Monster set below:
Other than in the black-on-black cube, I think it looks really sharp! So I'll cut those themes in each color (and take a picture of them in each cube) so that people can compare and see what combination they like best
Piston - To answer your question, yes, you can definitely take these apart and reassmble them with different panels!

Those look sharp!
I have to say personally I like the color variation on the cube rather than the panels. Give me all the panels in black and white with color options for the cubes any day of the week.
These *MUST* come in cream/light gray colour with matching panels marked with a heart symbol. Then I'll give these weighted companion cubes to Infinity Nomads (cube), Aleph (cube) or Ariadna (NWI).
I guess the shipping cost would kill this project for me, but thanks for a cool idea and good luck with kickstarting it nevertheless!
I don't have much time to add text, but here is a massive picture update!

Solar_lion, Yes, you can definitely pick different cube colors for different sets! You can also choose your panel color for the single-tone themes (red, yellow, or black panels) and can choose any color of cube for the KS-exclusive extra cubes
I really like the black cube with black and white panels, but the other colors look excellent as well. I think the black with black and white will blend very nicely on my x-wing mat and help with getting into the game.
Theophony, that is actually the only set you cannot choose the panel colors for, because for X-wing the different token color backgrounds are very important, so all Dogfight sets will come with a mix of green, blue, and red tokens.
Paul Heaver, a multiple-time national championship winner in X-wing, actually used the ModCubes in the X-wing Regionals tournament in West Virginia this weekend! With black frames, the cubes blend in well enough with the mat, see the below shot from the Twitch feed of the featured table at the tournament:
He was caught in deep thought over a particular maneuver in this pic, I think
Just a note for people who want special colors, these cubes can be primed and painted just like any HIPs product. So weighted companion cubes, wood grain, bone, creepy flesh, all possible with a little effort. I am thinking of etching a few runes into the sides of mine and painting them up as standing stones.
Also RiTides, I expect my pledge to be hand delivered to my house by you and a young Cuban woman. I can accept that being an early bird deal.
There are "first to ship" early birds, so check it out if you've been keeping an eye on this!
Here are a few teaser pics
overtyrant - I don't currently have a source for orange acrylic of the type I'm using, but I will certainly be keeping an eye out for it as that would be a fantastic token color for some of the cubes
I am definitely aiming for August, MasterSlowPoke - I think I put a note in the shipping section on that note. However, it seemed to make sense to leave two months buffer on when I commit to having the rewards delivered, because despite most things being already done, the unexpected could occur. But I will be pushing very hard for August, and updating as I progress!
Yes, it was a bit out of whack although in my defense, a number of those contributed towards this - the Form1+ is how I prototyped these (gotten through Kickstarter), and there were several laser cutting Kickstarters that I backed that gave me fantastic tips as I started out here, before I bought my own laser.
Going really well so far, now if I could just get un-snowed under enough to get the email out to the newsletter!

Backed! Was great to meet you at adepticon! I never got an email about the kickstarter though! (signed up for update and free cube). Did you not email out the signups yet?

he'd got spam filter issues

Yours must be one of the few that snuck out, greggles! I think I've found a way to fix it, thank you very much for finding me even without the email, though
How about a widget piece so you can connect two or more MODcubes together? I know it would be easy enough to just drop a magnet in each cube, but think of the potential building that could be done. Seriously I saw one of my sons rokenbok (sp) toys and thought it was multiple cubes glued together.
Also, email-gate is finally sorted! Apologies to anyone who received more than one email, I promise that will Never happen again! Mailchimp has it all sorted now... Gmail, never again!
Hope you come out with a fantasy-themed ModCube next. The D&D Adventure Game system just released Temple of Elemental Evil, which I expect will have a new Condition (iirc, present ones are Stunned and Poisoned from earlier sets). D&D Fifth edtiion, Descent 2nd edition, etc. and other fantasy games share the same condition names. So a fantasy-themed ModCube with a large enough token set could be used in *several* games, enlarging your potential audience.
Speaking of crates, some games have crates with different numbers on the bottom, and ModCubes would be ideal for this.
Definitely backed! In for at the very least ModMadness, may jump in for more later. I'm cutting back on my Kickstarter spending dollars mainly because I'm funneling my normal "monthly hobby" funds into my own projects for now... artists and 3D sculptors aren't cheap.
cvtuttle wrote: Backed it myself earlier and posted to The IC's Facebook page. I will be sure to mention it in our next episode (which drops next Monday).
Thanks so much, Carl! Really appreciate you guys' enthusiasm and support for the product it has been so helpful!
ced1106 wrote: Speaking of crates, some games have crates with different numbers on the bottom, and ModCubes would be ideal for this.
It is funny how popular the crate idea is on Dakka I will have to get to it at some point for sure. A lot of these things come down to figuring out exactly what ratio of tokens would make sense (for the 80 included in a set). I will be thinking on this one!
Fantasy will be coming once they put out the new rules, too
Theophony wrote: Too bad there's no way to get the kickstarter link to appear in your signature line RItides

Hmmm yes, you have a good point let me fix that!

You're completely right, they aren't! I did all the modeling here myself but to speed things up on releasing new sets I've hired an artist. It has been a good tradeoff for the time savings, but not cheap!
Thanks so much for the support guys, I have been blown away! I will stay on top of things here as well as in the KS comments, but if I missed anything feel free to shoot me a PM, etc
So I upped my order already... usually I wait until the kickstarter is funded... but that just isn't going to happen this time.
Down the road, I'd love to see the crates with both the objective/points numbers on one side and different ones with the secret objective (ie... skyfire/gravity wave) etc. on them.
I say down the road, because really... RiTides... you have enough to do to get this out the door; don't burn yourself out on this. Save this for Kickstarter #2, when you can have the textured panels and cubes made up.
Under-promise but over deliver.
That is great advice, Anpu-adom, and I will try to do so! (I.e. not overcommit)
My ideal scenario is actually retail release for all themes after this Kickstarter - this is going to be a lot of work, and a lot of orders all at once, which helps pay for the large upfront costs involved in getting the laser cutter and having the mold made. But once it is fulfilled I think I'll be happy to just sell new sets on the website when they are ready
How does this signature banner look? I've made each of them a link, so if anyone wants a banner just click on "quote" for my post and copy / paste that line into your sig:
Okay, time for me to crash for a bit again . Thanks for the fantastic response to the campaign and for all the tips here, see you on the flip side!
I'll probably be kicked out of the League of Extraordinary Riviters for removing my banner and subverting it with a kickstarter banner , but the word must get out.

Yep very happy about this. Hoping you get to put Stealth and shrouded in the 40k monster FMC side. As a Tyranid player I have that going all the time.
Looking forward to the extra colors. with how the first day has started. Do you have extra colors for higher level as it seams to me this just might be a little popular.
Yes, I am sure it will slow down a bit now but it is great to be close to funding
Stealth is definitely going in on the 40k side, likely instead of Pinned, which I have been informed is just the same result as "gone to ground" in 7th edition!
And we're funded. Not by me though, we were already just over when I finally got home and turned the computer on. But kudos to all of us for getting there. Now, more of you pledge so we can get green.
Wow, we are funded in just under 24 hours, thank you so much everyone! I took a screenshot to commemorate it =)
The response has been amazing - everything I had hoped for, and even a bit more! I do have a good plan from here, so just to copy and paste from the main page, these are the stretch goals we're now working towards:
$18,000 - Blue and Green cube colors will be offered
$21,000 - A token set compatible with Malifaux will be offered
If we are able to hit the $18,000 goal, I will be taking a poll on what colors people would like to see next! I will also be doing this with any other token sets we are able to unlock - I want to offer what you guys want the most =)
If anyone has input on how best to conduct a poll for backers where each person can only vote once, please share! I am leaning towards simply making an update where people post in the comments of that update with their vote as the easiest and most transparent method, but I am open to suggestions.
Finally, here are a few forum badges and signature banners, if you would like to share the campaign in your profile on forums! I will make up a few more options later in the week, as well:
If you are able to share the project with friends or on forums that you frequent, we can hit our stretch goals faster and unlock more colors and token sets =)
Once again, thank you so much for your amazing response and for funding the project so quickly!! If you have any questions on anything at all, please post in the comments or send me a private message, and I will be sure to respond by the end of the day. Cheers!
I am thrilled to be funded, thank you very much for the support guys! Now on to blue and green cubes
Here's an idea for you...
plan some 'half' sets of tokens.... each would have 20 rather than the full 40. A 'half' set would be perfect for 'Epic' play in X-Wing.
Start thinking about your packaging system now. Steve McLaughlin of WWPD took a tour of Battlefront's production facilities... posted a video of their "Pick Boards" something similar might work for you as well. You basically glue one complete set to a board, and have your help copy it before bagging.
So now that you have the real parts in hand, how good do they roll? Would they be good for something like rolling a hit location for a certain giant robot mech gladiator arena skirmish battle game? Would they fall apart easy when you roll them or do the pieces fit in snugly?
Numbers keep going up. Hopefully all those the emails weve collected have reached all those intrested and they'll jump on this as well.
As for more questions.. What army is Gits starting Next? What trama caused WM to be so witty? How does Graven keep possessing my cat!
Seriously though.. Kudo's for coming up with a great gaming aid.
What also will be intresting to see is what combinations of effects people put into their cubes, Some like the vehicles should be common place with slight variations for flyers ect.
Over on various Facebook groups (mainly X-Wing) I'm really surprised of the 'fear' for ModCubes. Is there really such a fear of people cheating in XWing?
I do suggest a video setup with XWing, bumping the table, placing them down, etc. I mean these are the size of dice, to get a dice to roll from a flat, requires a fairly big bump which would cause other issues on a game play table. People are worried about bumping them while they move things and go "Oh that was X and now its Y".

A bump that would tip over a die would do a hell of a lot worse to the minutia of ship placement, in terms of game rammifications. Chalk it up to overly crazy fans, being crazy. :-p
How's this for a request... Kings of War could benefit from just a higher volume of numbers of keep track of nerve. Any chance at a simple set with multiples of single digits, all the way 0-9? Double digits?
Dark Severance wrote: Definitely backed! In for at the very least ModMadness, may jump in for more later. I'm cutting back on my Kickstarter spending dollars mainly because I'm funneling my normal "monthly hobby" funds into my own projects for now... artists and 3D sculptors aren't cheap.
Holy cow! Aint this the truth.
There's a delicate balance to deciding when to bring in an outside contractor. Sweat equity is awesome, but there are times when you can't do things, and there are times when you can do them, but it is better and/or more efficient to pay someone to do it.
You can save costs by hiring new talent, but the trade off is that the risks are higher and you have to put a great deal of time and effort into finding, evaluating, and identifying people whose work will be top rate. It took three solid months of work to line up one of the artists I am using now, and after a few excellent pieces the artist wasn't able to work on the project anymore. Luckily, I maintained a relationship and we've got the artist under contract again doing even better work. But there was something like 8 months of tearing hair, gnashing teeth, and sacrificing chickens between then and now.
The final products look fantastic though RiTides! Congratulations.
So....Is hot pink or day-glo on the horizon at all?
Because if those two were choices, they would be my first two choices (followed by black).
This post is not a joke.

Dark Severance wrote: Over on various Facebook groups (mainly X-Wing) I'm really surprised of the 'fear' for ModCubes.
Isn't the fact that a world champ used them, like, enough?
Oddly, I just got convinced to pick up Malifaux at my FLGS by about 20 players that walked in. I find a card based random number generator (Other then dice) to be an interesting concept.
And this now makes me wish for the stretch goal to be reached. So I can pick up the tiles for Malifaux.
Anpu - That is a good idea, I will think about it!
Necros - I think I'm going with solid colors for now overtyrant - I don't yet have a source for orange tokens, but I will be looking!
Solar lion - Yes, I need to have a few more playtests done so I can see what people gravitate to for assembling their cubes, and tweak the ratios if needed (Pinned is unecessary, for example, covered by Gone to Ground)
weeble - I did not realize how literal the phrase "sweat equity" was, until now!
Dark Severance / NewTruth / cincy - Yes, I agree that any bump would knock the ships more, but it has been a concern for x-wing players who haven't yet seen these in-person! Everyone who touches them realizes they won't tip over at all... you have to pick them up, they're quite square-edged. I'm sending out another few x-wing samples to a video batrep person to show how they do not tip at all! And yeah, the world champ loved them . I've also gotten requests for a numbered set, so that may make it in - I have to think about what would look really good and be useful as far as simple numbers or pips go. Hot pink is probably not on the list... although a normal pink is one of the colors I have a sample picture from the factory of... hmmmm.
Theophony - I'll send out a poll regarding the next stretch tomorrow morning!
Vanguard - The Malifaux set is being worked on by the artist right now hoping to have something to show soon, maybe on Monday or Tuesday.
New update text!
First stretch goal is unlocked - Green and Blue ModCubes!!
We have reached (and gone beyond!) the first stretch goal, so the green and blue ModCube colors are unlocked!
Here are two images to hopefully give you a very good idea of what these colors will look like. The green is the leftmost "Pantone 355C", and the blue is the leftmost "Pantone 653C":
Here also are two parts, made by the same manufacturer who is producing the cubes, using these exact same color formulations:
Let me know what you think of the colors =)
Our next stretch goal is $21,000 - a token set compatible with Malifaux! I will also be sending out a survey in the next update (tomorrow) to see what colors and what new set people would like to see next.
Thank you again for your fantastic support!
Let me know what you think of the colors guys . Cheers!
I know the cubes don't fall over/roll around of their own accord, but do you think you could put a steel ball bearing inside to make that impossibility less possible still? I don't know why you couldn't at home, looks like there is space.
You have no idea. I keep a few Bones models within eye sight of her so she can pine for the days when she is old enough to play with them. So far though, she mostly just wants to name letters and eat everything within reach.

I am nothing if not someone who responds to feedback! So tomorrow morning, I will put a poll question about the blue into the update and show 3 shades of blue that the factory has given me the option to choose from. I would love to hear your thoughts on it then, along with what game system people would like to see next! (and possible future colors!)
Poll for new ModCube Game and Color options! Vote!!
As we approach our last initial stretch goal, we'd like to get as many interested folks as possible to vote in the following poll for choosing the next game systems and colors!
It is only 3 questions, and should take you about 30 seconds. We will make them in the exact order determined by this poll - you decide:
Feel free to share the link, although note that people must log in to their Google account to vote (to prevent duplicates).
Here is stretch goal path that will come out of the poll - we realized that we can actually break the goals up into intermediate goals by unlocking one color at a time, and by just showing a sample of the tokens that will be included in the game system. Check it out!
$15,000 - First 4 game systems and colors - UNLOCKED!
$18,000 - Green and Blue colors - UNLOCKED!
$21,000 - Token set compatible with Malifaux - Currently funding
$22,500 - New color and game system - Determined by voting in poll!
$24,000 - New color and game system - Determined by voting in poll!
$25,500 - New color and game system - Determined by voting in poll!
As a final note, we are very open to feedback on the composition of tokens in each set! The WGC Infinity group on Facebook has been giving us great advice on that set, and it will be updated with more options (although still 80 tokens total). If you have any feedback, please don't hesitate to share - this is one of the best parts of the Kickstarter experience, having a say in the product you are backing!!
Okay, now go back up to that link and vote in the poll - results will be revealed and the next 3 stretch goals set on Monday =)
Make your voice heard and vote for the game systems you want! Your light green is on the list, cincy
Also, I love the ideas of both weighting the inside of the cube (which is hollow) and adding lighting effects (would require translucent acrylic, but that is easy enough). If anyone is serious about that second option, please PM me so I can send you a set to go all mad scientist on
Alpharius, There's a link to view the poll results after you submit your vote, you can see that the lighter blue has a 2:1 edge on the darker one! So, I'll look to see if the 3rd option gets any traction, but it looks very likely that the blue will be getting lighter!
MasterSlowPoke wrote: Does Dropzone Commander not use a lot of tokens? They're the only game I noticed missing from the list.
It has a lot of possibilities for tokens, and I play it myself! My good friend is the 2013 GenCon tourney winner and 2014 runner up, and a Hawk Talon... he has reached out to them asking if a set for Dropfleet would make sense . So, we'll see if I could offer either of those options!
Heavy Gear Blitz is one that looks so easy to me because they already have the "dice layout" on their website for people to make their own. I'll definitely be getting to this, but I think it is more likely at retail rather than during the Kickstarter (although on a case-by-case basis I am willing to let you simply take credit for a future set if you don't want the Kickstarter options - not putting that on the campaign page but willing to work with anyone here who wants to help but doesn't play these games!).
Any chance of getting a D&D Attack Wing set made up? The Dogfight set covers a lot of the same ground, so as an option could that set maybe be made to a little more generic to cover multiple Attack Wing platforms?
Theophony wrote: Cast my votes.....I mean vote . I'm guessing that there just might be a MOD out there rigging this election, and I ain't talking about RITides
We are Legion after all...
But clearly the superior shade of blue is winning of its obvious merits alone.
Another interesting thing about the poll results is the vast popularity of the Game Creator Set (general numbers and symbols). My wife has been telling me for some time that I should make a more general set, and wow, was she ever right!
So I will be getting on that right away along with the other 2 most popular sets, which right now are trending towards 40k Mysterious Objectives and Star Wars Armada.
Also, overtyrant - My acrylic supplier just pointed me to some orange panel material (along with a few panel colors that will remain a secret for now), and I went ahead and ordered it! So, I'll be doing some test cuts on it and showing off the results when it comes in early next week
Ritides...
Have you tried the Modcubes with cardboard tokens? I'm wondering if 110lb of 65lb cardstock would work for homebrewed games.
They won't be as nice as your acrylics, but if the design process happens faster than the manufacturing if might be nice to have some print and play tokens available for the odd games.
Anpu, I actually have not and several people have asked me - I tried an earlier version with cardboard tokens, but since moving to this 2-piece design intended for injection molding, I've only tried acrylic tokens.
Are there "print on demand" services for cardboard tokens (and if so, could you point me to one)? The acrylic tokens are 0.44" x 0.44", so the other challenge would be getting tokens that are the correct size - I would think you'd need a custom punch for these to make a lot quickly.
I'm definitely interested in looking into this, as the response from the board gaming crowd has been quite strong but I didn't have anything geared towards them to start with... so I'd like to correct that to help bring more people into the fold and be able to create more options for everybody.
RiTides, I was thinking of printing sets at home... not in an industrial sense. My metal straight edge and X-acto knife would serve for the scale I was thinking about.
For many of the homebrewers, all you would need would be to produce a template in the 0.44x 0.44 size with cutting marks.
Ah, got it! Yes, I just need to see what card thickness is appropriate- it will likely be too thick to print at home (1/16" is the acrylic thickness) but using a printing service and cutting them may well work. I'd like to have something to point people to for this, as it's been asked about quite a bit. So, I'll look into it!
They are Troll Cast Alien Assimilation Counts As Tyranids vs. Dreamforge Leviathan (resin?) and then something else I can remember as the Counts As Marines (True Scale) - no GW miniatures were harmed in making that picture happen!

I expect that the easiest thing to do would be to print out your tokens on paper and put them on top of an acrylic Mod Cube insert. In other words, just cover up your vehicle tokens, for example, with whatever temporary tokens you need.
Yes it is, I'm very excited . The next stretch goal is $22,500, and which set (and new color!) it will unlock will be revealed Monday morning! After I put together the results from the poll (which will be posted in the update, so people can see exactly how the voting shaked out).
We made fantastic progress over the weekend, and unlocked the next stretch goal before I could even reveal the poll results! So, I'll both show the new unlocked sets, then the poll results at the bottom =). Here's the two stretch goals we just unlocked:
$21,000 - Token set compatible with Malifaux - UNLOCKED!
$22,500 - Game Creator set, plus a new red color - UNLOCKED!
And some pics below! Note that both of these have just been finished, and if you have feedback on any of the token designs (or ratios in the set) we'd love to hear it!
Important note! There will be the option to select just a "Poison and Burning set" compatible with Malifaux in the poll, since these can get numbered so high and quite a few people requested it. We'll try to get up some pictures of that later! The base set will include enough tokens for two "poison cubes" (1 - 6) and one "burning cube" (1 - 6). If you run a gang that uses tons of poison, you may want to get the dedicated set for it.
In the Game Creator Set, there are six images numbered 1 - 6 with circles, and six images numbered 1 - 6 with diamonds. The final two images have question marks instead of a number inside their corner symbols (the corner symbols may be moved in just slightly from these pics). This way, you could assign values to these various images, and also use them as numbers or "suits". Let us know what you think!
Finally, here's the unlocked color that goes along with the Game Creator Set stretch goal we achieved - it's the red on the left of the image, Pantone 185C. Below it are the poll results showing how Red won by a landslide!
As you can see, the Game Creator Set ran away with the poll, so we were able to get started on it as this became clear very early! Our next two stretch goals are now locked in as:
$24,000 - Token set compatible with SW: Armada, plus military green ModCubes!
$25,500 - SciFi Mysterious Objective token set, plus grey ModCubes!
We'll also be going with a lighter blue based on the last image from the poll (the pie chart). Thanks for your amazing support, and if you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to post in the comments below or send us a private message.
Thanks, Vanguard! The local Malifaux group really likes the way the Malifaux set turned out
I'd love to get feedback on the Game Creator set - I went this route because then people have the maximum amount of possible uses for these (with an image, a number, and a "suit" of circle or diamond on each). They would probably need to create a key if they wanted to use the symbols, but that would be true of any symbol.
I did consider going slightly more generic on the symbols, with just like a shield or a heart, but that's going to vary depending on what people wanted to use them for, so I went with what I though was a cool mix of art that could be useable for a variety of things (leaving off the rightmost two "?" images for a game that isn't scifi, but the rest can go either way, I think).
Let me know what you think, and if you have any suggestions I am very open to tweaking the set! Of if you like them as-is that's useful to hear, too
Edit: One suggestion I just got was to split the game creator set by theme, and have one that is what you would expect for fantasy symbols (shield, sword, fireball, etc) and one for scifi.
I think the limitless ability to make any type of tile is awesome. but At some point you have to limit yourself RiTides.
I know you spoke about letting other companies produce tiles for this. Don't try to do every tile set, Leave some for others to make.
I think a game creator set is an awesome idea. I like it because I can now turn these into actual D6's for use in other games. Personally I would make the game creator set a generic set, Mix in the fireballs, Swords, Guns, etc. Splitting the set into two may be a good idea, but I am curious if your single laser is going to be able to push out the production.
Otherwise, I think things are going great. What about a blank set? Something we can write on with wet / dry erase marker? With the ridges of the cube, they shouldn't wipe off to easily as long as you touch the edges.
Edit: I didn't mean to come off aggressively, just had to type that up quick.
That's very wise of you Vanguard, and I will take that advice! I think I'll just keep it to a single set, but choose tokens that are more useable for a wide variety of things, rather than things like that cute alien which look awesome, but can only really represent one thing.
I do have a blank set as one of the offerings, but I need to test it to see how well dry erase works on it - you're right that the recessed faces should really help keep it safer than it would be otherwise, but it will need a very fine tipped dry-erase marker to work well (I have some that I can try).
I've already got a perfect one for Stop too, so even closer! I probably wouldn't get to it during the campaign (Vanguard's advice... must remember!) but that would be that kind of thing that's absolutely perfect to offer up for purchase at retail / on the website in the fall
They'd look very nice in use on your demo board, too - I'd be happy to send you a set early to try out and see what ratio of tokens would make sense in the set, although again probably once the campaign here finishes due to all the madness that's going on currently!
Have you got a brilliance insert for mallifaux? Hmm was hoping warmahordes was going to get in on the project, hopefully it does but I may have to drop to one set if it doesn't ☹
Given how much time is left, I think Warmahordes is extremely likely, overtyrant. There's only 3 things in front of it: SW Armada, SciFi Mysterious Objectives, and SW Imperial Assault. It almost edged out that last one in the poll - came down to just a single vote!
Regarding Brilliance, could you describe to me what that does for Malifaux / what it represents? It might be best to post that suggestion here in the Malifaux thread, as I didn't get that as a suggestion there or from my local Malifaux group, so I'd like to see what others think about it. I'm not a Malifaux player myself yet, so I'm relying on the experts here!
Fantastic, Ozymandias! You did so just in time to subject yourself to this
Suffice to say we had no idea they'd be doing this when we sent a sample over to the UK but it looks like it's helping keep that peace in that unruly gaming club
Jehan - I am very happy for folks to wait until retail too, I'd love to sell them to you via the website (or in some local stores) then
Vanguard - I know, right? Loved it
B0b MaRlEy - Haha, awesome! And while I know no one actually uses a banana to mark Jink, it does show all the funny things gamers do to mark statuses, that these can help simplify a bit!

Don't really need a set for them since you get all the tokens with the game and the acrylic set is pretty cheap as it is anyways.

There may be sets in the future.
Remember, RiTides will be making tiles as he likes.
And he is allowing other companies to make tiles for the Mod Cube as well. Given enough time there will be Tokens for all systems.

Updated Game Creator Set, Metallic Tokens, and an Interview!
Here is the updated Game Creator set based on all the feedback we've received - we turned this around in 48 hours! Oh, and we took this opportunity to try out a new token material, metallic coating on blue =). You can also choose black, red, or yellow tokens:
There will also be half tokens for each of the symbols (along with all the numbers from 1 - 6, of course!) so that you can have even more options!
Finally, here is a more serious interview with the Chilling Wargamers where I discuss all things ModCube for 30 minutes:
We're entering the middle stretch of the campaign, so please help get the word out and share it with your friends / on forums you frequent if you can =). I could particularly use help reaching out to board gaming groups with this and tomorrow's update, where I'll be posting a "rolling test" of the latest production sample cubes and showing how well they stay together when used as custom dice in the Game Creator set. This has been by far the most requested set, and I hope that this version will be just what people were looking for. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
Until next time, keep on modding!
Deadzone is a possibility, it just depends on how the funding goes! As I put in the update, we're entering the middle stretch now so any group you could share the campaign with who might not have seen it on Dakka (so basically anywhere else ) would be so helpful!
Now that the Game Creator set is updated, I put up a post on BGG. If anyone is savvy with that site and knows if it could be posted anywhere else, please let me know!
It could be, Eldarain, it just depends on the lighting. Here's another pic with the metallic tokens in black cubes, like many people suggested:
There's warmer lighting in this pic, but the tokens are the same (well, almost - I tweaked the shield and potion designs slightly). So hopefully that gives you an idea of what it can look like in-person.
In bigger news, I received the second set of samples from the factory, and they Definitely roll without coming apart . Rolling video to come in the morning!
Now we have no excuse for missing special die. Manufacturers could reproduce tiles for some games like Decent, Super Dungeon Explore, or Betrayal in the house on the hill. One set of dice could run all your games.
It's definitely a trade-off, in that the more tightly they're held together, the harder they are to pull apart! I am very happy with the current level of tightness, will try to show disassembling them in another video
cincydooley wrote: So...dumb question....any chance there will be a set of 1-6 numbers in case we forget our dice in a pinch?
Yes, there is a set! There will be the "Game Creator" set. Which will come with numbered tiles, as well as a bunch of Common Images. (Shields, Potions, Etc.)
You can actually see the number tiles on the right most Mod Cubes.
Thanks Vanguard! I've had a few... creative... suggestions of further stress tests and will also show how robust the token surfaces are with the 2-tone acrylic (rather than being painted).
Also, we are past 24K and over 400 backers, very exciting on both counts . I should have some Star Wars Armada compatible samples to show tomorrow!
Can you hook us up with a simple image of a solo MODcube that I can change my kickstarter backer image to? Preferably not with the "wrecked" token as the side facing out
Also, I just posted this in the comments and would love to hear Dakkanaut thoughts on this, too. What do you think of the possibility of add-ons at these prices?
I've had numerous requests for add-ons, and have been thinking about it... what would people think of these prices? $15 for a set of 8 cubes or a set of 80 tokens as an add-on, or $25 for a full set of ModCubes (tokens + cubes + bonus cube!). I think that's actually really cheap compared to token sets on the market, and as they are the most labor intensive part of the process I can't really make them any cheaper (they really do constitute "half" of every set, with the cubes being the most expensive as far as materials, and the tokens taking the most labor). Thoughts appreciated!
I don't think the prices for the cube only or token only are unreasonable, they actually seem cheap
but i $25 for full set of 8 cubes tokens+ free one for KS as add on means it's cheaper than the 1, 2 or 3 set level on the KS so I suspect you'd get some push back about that
(maybe a $25 add on for those pledging over $100, or $30 if pledging under $100?)
Another person mentioned that too Orlando - I just wanted to ask if others feel similarly as $25 is actually the difference between the first 3 pledge levels ($30, $55, and $80) so was mostly intended so that people at say the $55 early bird could up their pledge to include an extra set without losing their early bird slot.
I did consider making it only $25 for people at the highest pledge level, but wanted to make it as affordable as possible for everyone (and simple to keep track of!) so that price seemed fair since it's the same as it would cost to up their pledge to the next level (otherwise people would be accidentally penalized for staying in their early bird pledge if they want to add to it!).
I don't play Star Trek attack wing so I'm not sure the size of the Borg cube, little ones as I've seen the massive one the size of deep space nine, but maybe these could be an inexpensive alternative.
Similar to the ModCubes compatible with X-wing, this takes your many Command tokens and consolidates them into cubes, to save time and energy while playing (and storing) your game! The exact contents of the set are still being finalized, but you will receive plenty of Command tokens, and enough to make a few "doubles" cubes in case you store up 3 or 4 commands on a single ship (not common, but possible!).
For 2 or less commands, from playtesting I prefer to use "singles" cubes =). There will also be some additional icons, which we'll try to show in future updates.
----------
Also... just for you, cincy! (Well, and a few guys from the Dice Maniacs Facebook group). Numbers only sets, make evens, odds, or whatever dice you like from 1 - 14:
Finally, add-ons are enabled! Here's the current list:
- 8 cubes (no tokens) - $15
- 80 tokens (no cubes!) - $15
- A full set of ModCubes (8 cubes, 80 tokens, plus a bonus cube!) - $25
Thanks cincy, and yeah, that cube color is intended for Rebels and I think is a perfect match for the black tokens
I am really pleased with how these came out, and the campaign has gotten quite a boost since posting them, so they seem to be popular! It's awesome that Armada Wave 1 just hit, too, I didn't want to take photos with only a Star Destroyer.
Fantastic, cincy! I playtested the X-wing ones with Wehrkind originally, and yeah, they clean up the table a lot . I am so bad at keeping track of all the separate tokens, so it makes the game a lot cleaner and more enjoyable for me!
Similarly in Armada, even with only a few test games I've noticed I always forget to place / remove the stock command tokens... flipping the cube is much more natural to me and easier to keep track of.
I'm going to be hard at work on the 40k mysterious objectives tokens over the next few days - I hope to be ready to reveal that set on Monday!
That's a good idea, MasterSlowPoke - it will just depend on the timing of when the production run of cubes comes in, and if we're able to get all the orders ready in time for the Nova Open (if not, we'll only be taking preorders there, rather than selling, too).
Henry, I really appreciate that, thank you! And I will pass it along, too . The artist we've been commissioning is certainly getting worked to the bone this month!
The ModCube seems to fare pretty well so far . This is only 100 replicates each, and my arm already hurts! I'd like to do a test with 1000 each, and also include a casino die for a "gold standard", if I'm able to later on.
Currently working hard on the Mysterious Objectives set for 40k, and a surprise piece that may be included in every pledge! More to come soon
RItides first documented case of "Dice Elbow" recorded for posterity. Maybe you can get a government grant to study the effects of dice rolling on the human physique.
In seriousness though, are you checking to see if the face of the cube that has the clicky side come side up more or less? There might be slight bias due to the added weight of the clicky bits, or the solid side, and depending on cube 1 vs cube 2 if the tokens aren't in same spots it could deviate. Might not be too noticeable, but it could be enough to adjust where the 6s have a slightly better chance.
That's exactly what I'm checking for, Theophony - those results are listed as "1" and "6", and the others are also opposite each other as on a normal die (2 and 5 are opposite, and 3 and 4).
The results are a bit inconclusive (which is good!) since ModCube 1's lowest result is an end face, while ModCube 2's highest result is also an end face. If there is a bias towards the ends, it's not that drastic, and like I said I'll try to do a more thorough study later on. To compare, Chessex dice are often slightly axially biased, and you can see that Chessex 2 may be favoring the 2-5 axis.
I imagine the most bias will come from how people roll these - since they're the same size as casino dice (although not as square, since the ModCubes have slanted edges) the biggest factor in results will likely be people not really shaking them up and just dropping them. There's a reason craps tables are so long and have that crazy indented wall at the end to ensure no one is manipulating their rolls! For this test, I used an X-wing mat laid up against a wall, and bounced the cubes across it and into the wall for each roll.
As a scientist and supporter, to avoid the "dice elbow" I suggest -as you have a working laser cutter- build yourself a dice tower (...and if it looks nice, perhaps it would be a great addon for the KS)
Today was a down day (about $45 - actually had a bit of flux as several new backers joined but a few dropped) but those happen in the middle of campaigns and I have to keep my nose to the grindstone making these new sets! We got a nice little boost on Friday when I posted the Armada set so I'm hoping for similar when I post these mysterious objectives I'm working on
Overall I'm just ecstatic with where things have gotten to! I do hope with most of 3 weeks to go we can unlock a few more sets - Imperial Assault will be next in line (which has been one of the most requested), followed by Warmachine / Hordes, and then the longsuffering Firestorm Armada fans
That may be about it really - I would like to see a good list for Deadzone, since that's been mentioned by a number of folks on here... and really a list for any of those would be great! I just picked up Imperial Assault from a friend today to look over the tokens it comes with and see what would be best to include (I know there's been a suggestion in this thread about it, too, but it's gotten rather long!).
40K Mysterious Objective set is revealed! Check out the pics:
See the full post on the Kickstarter page at the link below or by clicking the pics above, and maybe this will tempt in a few of you who have been on the fence or haven't had a use for the prior sets
Please also share this with other 40k communities you are a part of, as this is an unmet need as far as we can tell! We'd also love your input on what the bonus cube should be for this set: a turn counter, warlord trait marker, or wound counter.
If you wanted two sets ((keep in mind each set comes with around ~80 tokens.)) Of 40k, and one set of Objective markers...
If you got the $55 ModDeux set ((two sets of Mod Cubes, Two+ sets of acrylic)) Will most likely get you one of each set.
So you would need to do the $80 MMMOD set. That would come with three sets of mod Cubes, and about four sets of Tokens.
Remember, All Token sets are by choice. So you could get any sets you like.
Thanks. I need to have a proper read through it and see what's best. I thought they'd be an extra cost for the acrylic tray.
Not quite. There is no increased cost. Simply the number of actual Tokens is reduced to about 60. You still get the Acrylic Trays, just not as many tokens to offset the cost.
Hulksmash wrote: I realized I hadn't shared with our 700+ mostly local group so I corrected that error. Hopefully that helps out
Oh man, that's great - thanks Hulk!
ShaneTB - I'm still tweaking the exact contents of that set, but the acrylic bases are offset by getting less of the other components in that set. Most sets comes with 8 cubes (plus a free bonus cube of any color, so 9 on Kickstarter) plus 80 tokens. The Mysterious Objective set will come with 2 less cubes (6 + the free bonus cube) and 56 tokens, but will have the six 1.5" bases with a cutout to put the cubes in them
General Hobbs - Thanks for sharing it! And yes, the Mysterious Objective set "bonus cube" will fall into one of those categories - maybe just numbered so people can use it how they like. I do have a Vehicle Damage set, pic spoilered below (unless you meant just a hull point set)
Using the extra cube/tokens to mark Sister units under Act of Faith would be nice. Not sure of the logistics and want for that though; espeically as those rules are prone to change with the next codex.
I'll have a proper think as to what the extra dice could be useful for.
I really want to do faction specific stuff eventually, but it will most likely be later on just due to timing! So it's likely the 8 extra tokens in this set will need to be something that could apply to all armies. Thanks for the suggestion and believe me, I'm eventually going to make some psychic power ModCubes for my tyranids just have to get these sorted first!
How about a small set of tokens for Bloodbowl? Or you could do an entire specialist games range set. If the rolling turned out good I could see custom symbols for blocking die as well. Then have your really stupid markers for the big guys. Then have stuff for Mordheim and necromunda as well.... Like jammed or pinned.
I think the next set is going to be Warmachine / Hordes, followed by Imperial Assault. I would like to cover more systems and with 3 sets for 40k now, and then with Imperial Assault hopefully the trifecta of Fantasy Flight Star Wars games, I think I need to broaden a little bit. The voting was nearly identical for these two, so I was torn between which to do, but Warmahordes makes the most sense to be first.
After that it is more wide open, although I really need to get the Firestorm Armada set in there (those guys have been quite longsuffering!) and the suggested scifi crates set, so that's likely the queue we're looking at.
I've made a new banner here it is with tags to link it to the Kickstarter (just quote this post and copy that section if you'd like to use it):
We're very close to the $25,500 goal, so I'm hoping to officially post the two new stretch goals tomorrow!
There will also be a surprise coming this week, but if I told you what it was, that would ruin it
Xraytango - We'd have loved to, but I think we will be neck deep in all the finishing items for the campaign then! Hopefully we will be able to attend next year, though
Excellent work guys, the mysterious objective set has been unlocked! This will be extremely useful for simplifying keeping track of objectives in games of 40K. Also note that there will be tokens for the Scourging included, which are intended to be hidden under the cube until they are discovered.
What's cooking??
Quite a bit, in fact! We were hoping to have a surprise ready to show today, but it needs a little more work so will be shown Thursday or Friday morning. We'll at least tell you what it is, though - a free piece to help pop the ModCubes apart! Now that they assemble so tightly (which is fantastic) they go together really easily, but are a little harder to disassemble - but not with this piece! It's quite nifty and we can't wait to show it to you later this week =) and, of course, free!
Also, we've had tons of interest from the board gaming community in custom tokens - this actually took us by surprise and we've been playing catch-up on that front! We are testing out card chit tokens in the ModCubes and plan to offer a "cubes only" set (15 cubes but no tokens, so for example 30 cubes for $55) and partner with a custom token service. More to come on this very soon hopefully!
Finally, here are the new stretch goals, which were basically tied in the poll:
$27,000 - Token set compatible with Warmachine / Hordes, plus yellow ModCubes
$28,500 - Token set compatible with SW: Imperial Assault, plus light green ModCubes
We'll show off the grey color cubes (which we just unlocked!) when the next goal is unlocked - thanks for your patience! Any questions, just post a comment or send a PM =)
I was worried the new 'tighter' connection would be an issue when it came to disassembly. But it seems you've taken that into consideration and made an awesome new tool!
Always a step ahead you are! [/yoda]
Now, How many tools will we get? Are we going to get one per set? or will it be one per pledge?
I really can't wait to see what it looks like! I hope it's some steampunk looking contraption!
Thanks, Vanguard! I'm still deciding that... if possible, it would be very helpful to only need to supply one for most pledges, and two for the $100 pledge level (i.e. the second sweet spot). I'd love to hear feedback on that, if possible!
Theophony, it's basically the opposite of that GIANT hammer . I spoiler tagged that image since it was making the page scroll, hope that's OK

Well, I don't know about some of the others here... But I do plan on showing my friends these Cubes when I finally get my hands on them. Maybe giving a few of them out. It would really stink to have only one tool.
Others may be planning on splitting each set between friends... ((unlikely, but possible))
So maybe adding the ability to buy more then one tool, Or maybe trade the "Free Kickstarter" Cube for another tool?
Introducing the ModCube Tool - included free with every set of ModCubes!
Watch this less than 1-minute video showing how it works - it's a thing of beauty!!
We decided to make and include this tool because, as you can see in the video, the ModCubes snap together very easily and tightly now, but they hold together tightly, too - which is fantastic for rolling, but not for pulling them apart! Now you can just push down on the tool and they pop apart =)
Awesome , but it needs a keychain attachment now, so that when all my friends are using their beer cap openers on their key gains I can pull my MODcube opener out and pop open a cold MODcube.

Exalted for being the best Idea I've heard lately!
Out of curiosity, does the tool work on any face? Or do you have to line it up correctly? I can't really see what the tool is doing, beyond some kind of acrylic sorcery.
Love the simple yet elegant design. I also am with Vanguard on the idea of swapping the bonus cube for an extra opener. Not sure I would personlly swap, but I would have a lot easier time trading away a freebie than shelling out more cash for an extra tool.
Well, a little lanyard is an excellent idea I just ordered a set to try adding onto them (like the kind you find on small USB drives). I'll see how it looks and if it's nice I'll add those in - thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, MCRobot! You're right that it only works on the "end" faces - the tool is two pieces of acrylic glued together. The top piece aligns the cube, and the bottom piece has two tabs which press up on the corners of the cube to pop the top half of it out. I'm going to include a tool with each set - would you still want additional tools, or is that sufficient? Most people are pledged for 2 sets, so they'll all have a spare tool (and of course anyone pledged for 3 or more will get those many extra, as well!).
Slarg232 wrote: Does this work with Maelstrom's Edge tokens?
The Maelstrom's Edge team have sent me their art and I'm hoping to reveal a set of ModCubes for MEdge in the final week!
Thanks Slarg! Sharing this is super helpful - many folks on Dakka who were interested jumped in early, so the discussion here is really helpful from a feedback standpoint, but to get exposure I need to get people who don't check Dakka / this N&R thread to find out about the ModCube. So cheers for doing that
Edit: We just got posted up on the AdeptiCon facebook page, woot!
You could probably expand these out to CCGs as well; Pokemon could use them saying Paralyzed, Poisoned, Confused, and stuff like that. Magic The Gathering could use them as +1/+1 counters/keeping track of Vigilance and Haste.
This is simple, but has some enormous growth potential.

Ah, I misunderstood "sets" vs. "pledge".
A tool essentially for every eight cubes (give or take) sounds like a pretty good ratio if I'm understanding you correctly. Enough so that people splitting an order are okay but not too many that I'm drowning in them.
MCRobot - I mis-spoke in the video when I said "pledge", but in the update text (and in reality!) it's going to be 1 for each set in your pledge
Vanguard - The cost of these is quite low since we already invested in the laser cutter and make them in-house at over 50 to a sheet. We obviously have to spend the time cutting them, but they're easy to do since there will be no masking layer to add or remove. We felt it was worth it as it makes opening the cubes up so much easier! And so should really help with how useful people perceive the ModCube to be (whereas if it was hard to open, it has much less utility). Thanks for thinking of us and definitely keeping that in mind!
Almost to 27,000. Yellow cubes are almost in , light green cubes are up next. I'm hoping that we can unlock a rainbow pack, one of each color choice...we could call it the "skittles pledge level"
A "skittles" set (one of each color of ModCube) will definitely be an option . We'll be getting paint matched to the Pantone colors today so that we can show some example ModCubes of each color, hopefully on Monday!
Slarg - I missed your comment above, thanks for that and yes, a lot of games share similar effects (poison and paralyzed are in the Malifaux set, for instance) so we will be able to expand our offerings a lot more in the future
Shane, Yes I'm either swapping that in instead of Pinned (since pinned now just results in a "Gone to Ground" result) or will work it in some other way - but it is definitely making it in
Would you prefer just "Morale" or "LD Check" for the text on that token?
I had Falling Back for that purpose, but Run Away would actually be much easier to fit on the token if folks would prefer that! (Or if it's called that now... I haven't been actively playing 40K in 7th edition)
As backer number 1, (deal with it nerds) I recommend Morale as the official lingo on the token.
If my unit suffers 25% casualties, I place a MORALE token near them to remind me they need to test. If they pass, I remove the token. If they fail. they fall back (run away) then I take another MORALE test to see if they rally.
That sounds right to me katfude! . Does the Falling Back token still make sense, rather than just keeping the Morale token next to them? I'm thinking yes as it signifies that they already took (and failed) their first check, but wanted to see people's thoughts. I need to make room in this set for a few things that have been requested (Swoop / Jink and Jink alone, since FMCs can also do this) so just looking at all the options

The tool is a really great idea. You've got things very well in hand RiTides!
That will actually be it for colors - we just finished photographing all 12 unlocked colors (although we're not quite to light green yet) and will be posting it as an update in the morning.
For the next set, we're leaning towards the SciFi crates set. More ideas on that greatly appreciated! Biohazard and other markings, lots of sides that are just patterned like a hi-tech container, and maybe some numbers for the underside to indicate what was in the crate?

I think morale would serve the purpose of the fall back token. There's a few instances where it might be confusing, IE: 1 of my units takes 25% and then needs a morale check at the end of shooting, but a DIFFERENT unit that was previously falling back has a morale block next to it as well, so I might accidentally roll dice for their morale as if they were shot at.
Seems like a stretch but is possible. That said, I don't even use FMCs but if there was any token to drop to support a token for them, it would be Falling Back, IMO.
Whalemusic, I'm mailing Vermonter some cubes and clear tokens to play around with lighting up with LEDs but without lighting, the translucent tokens don't show up well enough in the cubes to be as legible as the opaque tokens.
Although, I think you might have meant the cubes themselves! Those unfortunately do have to be a solid color since they're injection molded, but hopefully you'll like one of the colors we're showing off tomorrow morning
