All 12 ModCube colors revealed, let me know what you think . Plus the "Skittles Set" (which I am calling the "Rainbow Set") is now a thing, if you want one each of the bright colors
All 12 ModCube colors revealed! Plus Rainbow Set unlocked
All 12 ModCube Colors!
You also can now select a "Rainbow Set" of cubes - one cube each of Dark Blue, Light Blue, Dark Green, Light Green, Purple, Red, Orange, and Yellow! With your choice of your final "bonus" cube =)
These are painted except for the black, purple, and orange colors, and the final injection molded cube colors will actually be slightly more vibrant than these painted samples. Here they are with the Pantone swatches showing the exact color that the factory will be matching:
And one final view showing them all together:
The orange and black will remain the same as in this intial batch, so the orange is a good one to look at to see how the swatch compares to an injection molded final sample. The purple swatch chosen is slightly darker than the initial test cube, and the burgundy chosen is much darker than the initial test (see the painted cube in the top right of the pictures above).
Before sending out the survey we will post pictures of each available token color in the different cubes - not all token colors may be offered with all cube colors if they do not match well (on the lightly colored cubes, the black tokens look by far the best, whereas on the darker cubes a lighter token color can be used).
Finally, we're approaching our last listed stretch goal, so the next one is below, and it's a freebie!
$30,000 - Free lanyards for the ModCube Tool included in every set! Will receive multiples for each set you're pledged towards.
The Warmachine / Hordes compatible set, along with a list of the remaining stretch goal sets, will be shown tomorrow!
Finally, a happy Memorial Day to our US backers and any who celebrate it, may we all remember those who have been injured or killed fighting for their country today. There was a national service last night and seeing "the greatest generation" (WWII vets) on stage was really moving. Enjoy grilling if you're able, too =)
I also got a question in the comments about splitting add-on cube packs into two colors, which I've gone ahead and said I will allow . But is this something people would like to see for the main sets? It adds quite a bit logistically so would need to be a stretch goal if so. Let me know your thoughts! My post from the KS comments is below:
I have been very torn on whether or not to allow the splitting of sets into 2 colors for the main sets, though, as it will add quite a bit logistically. I am open to it if it would be popular, but if most people plan to only select a single color, it may not be worth it. What do you guys think? Due to the logistics if I allow that for the main sets it will be a stretch goal, which we're currently working out for the remaining week and a half in the campaign!
now I'll probably have to bump up to at least three sets, black, grey and skittles. That way I can do halfsies on the black and colored and grey and colored.
What will the lanyards look like? Might have missed that. Are they Yellow with the MODcube logo?
Also any chance of a pic of the yellow cube with yellow panels? I feel an obnoxious color choice may be in my future.
Hulk - Yeah, I am leaning towards it! It will be a stretch goal but not far off so that I can be sure it gets in (probably $33K, with Star Trek: Attack Wing as the one before it).
Theophony - Excellent . Regarding the lanyards, I haven't shown a picture yet - I have one type in-house already and another arriving tomorrow. That one is double the cost unfortunately, but I think it is higher quality - so I will see what I think between the two when it arrives!
I will be taking pictures of each cube color with the panels available to it - I had not considered yellow on yellow but I will at least see what it looks like! For panel colors that don't look good with certain cube colors, I'm not going to offer those combos so that people don't accidentally choose something that clashes. The black tokens look really good in all of the lightly colored cubes, and the darker cubes allow some of the lighter token colors to look good, too (like red tokens in the black cubes, I really love that look!).
If the lanyards are more expensive, I would be willing to possibly pay a few extra $$$ if they look cool. But they'd have to make me look like the super cool gamer that I am when I head to the local game store. All those east coast and west coast gamers will have to deal with it how cool I am because that's how I role........play
RiTides wrote: Okay, it will be soon on the list, Orlando
Theophony, there won't be any need to add funds for the lanyards, if the more expensive one looks better that's the one I'll go with!
We know you are awesome already, you don't need to shrink your margins anymore by adding excessively expensive free stuff. Maybe just give the basic lanyards as option 1 and the more expensive if desired as a future stretch goal. I know it's probably not a huge difference in price and won't break the kickstarter, but i feel like making sure your business is set up nicely for the future. Plus it's more stretch goals.
RiTides,
To channel Theo a bit... please make sure that you aren't stretching your self too thin on these stretch goals. You've already had orders for over 1,000 sets. If splitting colors adds 2 minutes to packing each set of cubes, then you'll add 2,000 minutes or 33 HOURS to packing time.
Be sure you take care of your self while delivering to your backers.
Exactly, you've succeeded in making a great idea come to life. You've succeeded on the great kickstarter. Now succeed in delivering on time or even ahead of schedule, with accurate order fulfillment. Don't make too many variations that you get bogged down in trying to do too much. I am more than happy with what I'll get. You don't need to "buy" more friends by trying to make everyone happy. KISS. Keep it simple Sir. Especially since you'll have all the tokens to cut. If anything space your following stretch goal out far enough to give every set one additional cube of the same color chosen (if feasible), or just say "that's all folks". I'd love to have a no time kickstarter show up.
ced1106 wrote: So what boardgames would use the rainbow colors?
ModDeux would be the pledge level to get the rainbow?
I don't know why I want them. I just do.
ced - You could actually get Two rainbow sets with the ModDeux pledge . Note that the rainbow set only gives 8 of the colors, but they are the ones that work together well: Dark Blue, Light Blue, Dark Green, Light Green, Purple, Red, Orange, Yellow. You also get a bonus cube with each set, which you can choose the color for (from any of those, or the other 4 colors: Black, Grey, Military Green, Burgundy). Those last 4 are a much more "drab" tone, which could work well for some realistic wargames, but don't belong in the "rainbow" as much. Let me know if that's clear
Anpu - Thanks for the advice, and you're very right! This is something I had been considering partially from a packing perspective - it's going to be somewhat easier to line up sets of 8 halves into small plastic bags, than to line up 16 halves, and would be slightly less prone to error... so, I'd be considering packing 8 halves together, anyway. I also view this as a way to see what people want, to determine if I will offer the two-color sets at retail, or only offer single colors (based on how popular it is here).
Theophony - That is very much my goal, and again, thank you for the advice! That's also why I'm likely not going to offer additional token colors beyond those I've shown, to simplify fulfillment. Finally, I'll likely only start out cutting exactly what people order. I do have a person coming in to help with the cutting during the summer months, so that should ensure that we can produce all of the sets in the time allotted - I will be keeping a close eye on this.
Regarding stretch goals, the number of new sets beyond what has been shown is likely at most 4: the two attack wing variants (star trek and D&D), scifi crates, and possibly firestorm armada (which was requested early on and I still haven't gotten to it). I really appreciate you guys advice and will take it to heart and not go beyond that! Please continue to offer advice and don't let me lose track of the ball as the goal is definitely to deliver this on-time!
Update showing the Warmachine / Hordes compatible set!
Warmachine / Hordes compatible ModCube set revealed!
Here is the Warmachine / Hordes compatible set of ModCubes! Detailed set contents listed further down in the update:
The purpose of this set is simple - everyone needs to mark things like Fire, Corrosion, Knockdown, Stationary, Aiming, and Missing System / Aspect (Aspect not shown but it is identical to the System token, just for Hordes). Now you can keep all of those tokens on a cube so you can quickly grab it and mark the effect your model / unit is suffering.
There are also so many innate abilities can be handed out by warcasters / beast animus / unit abilities, and if you're like me you forget you have them! So, you can have the extra cubes in your set configured with things like Stealth, Terror, Undead, Incorporeal, Reach, Eyeless Sight, Pathfinder, Tough, Steady, and Reroll - whichever is most useful to you =)
This set is intended to augment your normal warmahordes dry erase tokens, and just add one more tool for Warmachine / Hordes players to play a tight, fast game. The entire token list (80 tokens total) is:
6 each: Fire, Corrosion, Knockdown, Stationary, Aiming, Missing Aspect, Missing System
4 each: Undead, Incorporeal, Reach, Pathfinder, Stealth, Tough, Steady, Eyeless Sight, Terror
2 each: Reroll
Let us know any thoughts or suggestions you have about this set!
Finally, for those who might have missed it, we now have ModCubes in 12 colors:
You can also select a "Rainbow Set" of cubes, giving you one each of Dark Blue, Light Blue, Dark Green, Light Green, Purple, Red, Orange, Yellow (plus your choice of bonus cube color). You will select this in the survey =)
Our next goal is a free lanyard to keep track of your ModCube Tool at $30,000. Thanks so much for your fantastic support!
Piston Honda - The tokens are 1/16" thick, and anodized aluminum tokens could look amazing if you have access to something like that!
I hereby call for a "Rainbow Sherbet" (or sorbet?) pledge level, where you get 1 of each color cube + a set of squares for the game set of your choice.
Necros, you can actually select that with any pledge level although it just comes with the 8 bright colors + a 9th cube of your color choice.
Thanks, Vanguard!
I've gotten a lot of good feedback on the Warmachine / Hordes set - people really want tokens with just an outline that you can write in on for Spell / Upkeep / Animus. I may have a label at the bottom with the outline a different shape for each... update to come in the morning!

that should work well, Most players use Dry Erase markers for card damage as is. So applying marker to the tokens should work just fine for that.
Did you get any testing on how well dry/wet erase works?
how about footage of a Mod cube getting shot out a gun?
I may actually put up a video with this new set, Vanguard - the dry erase works quite well on the natural surface of the material, but not on the etched surfaces, so for those tokens I will be testing an inverted white-on-black material tonight. Stay tuned!
I don't think the gun test is going to happen during the campaign, but I think Wehrkind is ready and willing to use all sorts of weapons on them as soon as I can get over to his place again
New update with the updated Warmachine / Hordes compatible set is up! Now with tokens you can use dry erase markers on like most warmahordes players are used to doing
Warmachine Set updated - now with dry erase tokens!! Also Imperial Assault Set unlocked!
You asked, and we are happy to deliver =) an updated set for Warmachine, including dry erase tokens!
And a picture showing them written on with dry erase markers, trying both a Fine and Ultra Fine from Expo. Fine is the most common, and I actually like it the best - as long as you are only trying to write initials =)
This set will come with the following tokens:
8 each of: Spell, Upkeep, Animus, Fire, Corrosion, Knockdown, Stationary
4 each of: Order, Aiming, Blank 1, Blank 2
2 each of: Feat, Disrupted, Lost Aspect, Lost System
And we've made it past the $28,500 stretch goal unlocking a set compatible with Imperial Assault, which we'll be showing off on Friday! The next goal is $30,000 for free lanyards for each ModCube Tool in your pledge =) (you get one for every set you've pledged towards).
Yep, and I'm actually Really looking forward to getting down to that part of it . Just finishing up lining up help to come in for the month of July to really mow through laser cutting these, and be ready to get packaging when the production run of cubes arrives!
Anpu, I think those are actually going to turn out to be the 4 most popular sets, the response from the 40k community has been really good! Lots of backers have come from Dakka and Beasts of War, and actually even more from BOLS than BOW despite us not posting anything on BOLS. If anyone has a contact over at BOLS, I would love to get more info up there!
So what the next step for us pledgers ( is that a word? ). Are we going to get a selection form or email, carrier pigeon, Whalemusic showing up at the door with a clipboard and a baseball bat?
Solar_lion wrote: So what the next step for us pledgers ( is that a word? ). Are we going to get a selection form or email, carrier pigeon, Whalemusic showing up at the door with a clipboard and a baseball bat?
Apologize if I missed this earlier.
Next Step RiTides will get a dump truck filled with money driven up to his door. He'll then be able to fill a swimming pool with it and swim around ala scrooge mcduck.
You'll likely be getting a survey a few days after the campaign ends with basic questions, and then some form of Pledge Manager after that.
malfred wrote: I backed for sweetspot2. How does this work with the wm/hd tokens?
Awesome! You'll get your choice of 2 sets of ModCubes, so you could get 2 sets of Warmachine / Hordes ModCubes (useful if you run a list where you're going to set everybody on fire or knock everybody down ). I'll have detailed pictures of each set up when I send out the survey soon after the campaign ends, so you can make your selections there!

Yes, a survey will go out through the Kickstarter system the week after the campaign ends. I asked a lot of the core backers and, given that I need to start production on these right away, I'm now planning to simply get your selections in the Kickstarter survey, and not offer a pledge manager. The turn around time on this campaign is fast enough that I think if people want to add more they can just get them through the webstore after they get their Kickstarter rewards
Cyp - No swimming in things here as we've got a clear plan for all the funding, even through $40,000 if we are able to make it that far! A large percentage is going to the production run of the cubes, another portion to the bulk order of acrylic, and a lot of course being set aside for shipping of rewards at the end of the summer, etc. The scale of things has been really helpful for getting price breaks on a lot of those things, and we've planned for this amount of extra funding by bringing in summer help to get the extra tokens cut. All on track, and we really plan to deliver these on-time!

Easy, I'll start a news and rumors thread here on DakkaDakka stating that GW is coming out with a new cube to replace dice and is trying kickstarter to test the water. Give it a day or two and Larry Vela will have "inside information" regarding the new direction GW is headed with "fully modular" dice.
I'm hearing warning mumbles that USPS is planning more price hikes later this year (summer?) so seen if you can chase that down (unless you already know the details)
OrlandotheTechnicoloured wrote: I'm hearing warning mumbles that USPS is planning more price hikes later this year (summer?) so seen if you can chase that down (unless you already know the details)
Thanks for the heads up, Orlando! I will just absorb any domestic increase; the turn-around time on this is short enough that it will not be too much I think. And I have already agreed to my international rate with the UK-based distributing company who I may actually send all the international orders to to fulfill, depending on how the "first to ship" batch goes!
Vanguard, from the address you gave me I think it'd be like a 9 hour commute (also, we already have someone lined up and are just working out the final details, but I appreciate it ).
You'll get one tool for each set of ModCubes you've pledged towards, along with the free lanyard! Using this tool makes popping your ModCubes apart a breeze, see the video of the V1 tool in action here if you missed it:
Spoiler:
Finally, the next stretch goal is the option to split the cube sets into two different colors, since that seemed very popular . And we should be ready to reveal the already unlocked Star Wars: Imperial Assault set on Sunday or Monday!
Thanks Vanguard . It's a simple thing, but will make keeping track of those tools much easier! (I'll probably loop mine onto my dice bag)
And noted about the willingness to work, if you can get some ModCubes lit up with LEDs that will be amazing and I am happy to pay in ModCubes (doing so to AdeptiCon already, actually, for part of the booth fee for this year's convention).
Not yet, cincy - we switched the order of the Imperial Assault and V2 Tool updates since the IA set needed just a little more polishing (will be ready to show in a day or so, planning to post it Sunday or Monday morning).

I'm heading to the post right now to put a few in the mail to Vanguard to try lighting up, as we'd worked that out some time ago but I've been so busy! So hopefully we'll see if that's feasible and if others want to give it a try once I'm past this campaign madness I would be open to that, too
Also, we are now featured on Kicktraq! Although maybe we should have done so last week since there were no featured projects and now we share the spot with 3 others. But if you refresh the home page a few times, you should see our logo just above the "Top 10"
This is also 150 pixels tall so does fit in a signature field if you'd like to use it
Lastly, we have cleared $30K and 500 backers almost simultaneously, both of which were huge milestones for us, so that is extremely exciting! We have goals lined up to $40K and are hoping we can make it that far with the final push, as it would really help with quantity discounts, so please share the word if you know others who might be interested . Along with Vanguard's set to try lighting, I'm sending more samples to the Independent Characters, the X-wing facebook group and a podcast that is in Brazil, no less!!
I'll light up my sets when they arrive. Actually just spent two hours cleaning in my gaming/hobby area and found all the light kits that were there.
I think I'm going for black set and yellow set with tokens for x-wing and crates. Having just seen all my Scythes of the Emperor figures collecting dust I may have to bump up my sets to include 40K vehicles and troops.
Star Wars: Imperial Assault compatible set revealed!! And a teaser =)
The Star Wars: Imperial Assault compatible set of ModCubes is finally ready to be revealed!
We actually are using new purple color for some of these tokens, to match the color of official card tokens. You can see that in these pictures, we've built the cubes to have some dedicated for damage tracking, and others for strain tracking + other effects. We also wanted to make some crate tokens, but due to how many damage and strain tokens are needed, we just couldn't fit them in this set. However, we will have a dedicated "SciFi crates" set as a stretch goal for later this week!
Speaking of which, here is the stretch goal map, all the way to $40K!
- $31,500 - Free option to split any ModCube set into two cube colors
- $33,000 - ModCube set compatible with Maelstrom's Edge
- $34,500 - ModCube set compatible with Star Trek: Attack Wing
- $36,000 - ModCube set compatible with D&D: Attack Wing
- $37,500 - SciFi crates set!
- $40,000 - ModCube set compatible with Firestorm Armada
We'll be revealing a new set each day this week, so keep checking back!!
Finally, our good friends and amazingly dedicated wargamers over at Spiral Arm Studios have a game coming out called Maelstrom's Edge. They've raised almost $50K towards it, and are in their final hours! We'll be revealing our ModCube set compatible with their game tomorrow, so check out their page and make sure you don't miss out on their campaign!
We also showed the full stretch goal map to $40K above, with the SciFi crates set (the idea for which came from Dakka!) at $37,500. The campaign runs through Friday, and I think we can make it but we could use some new backers!! So please spread the word if you know of any board gamers who might like this Imperial Assault compatible set
The Imperial Assault cubes are gonna be a huge boon. With so many Imperial models that can repair, it's going to remove a lot of the fiddliness of having to track (and move) wound counters.
It'll also really help clean up the Rebel player boards.
Very, very excited. Not just to determine what color cube frames to get for it.....
Hey 'Tides, one of those Imperial Assault compatible token icons is a bit...suggestive. Maybe it is just me, but you may want to consider revising it a bit.
Vanguard - Thanks, looking forward to seeing what you come up with on the lighting
cincy - I'll post a picture of the different token colors inside the different cube frame colors the week after the campaign ends, right before the survey goes out. For sets where there are multiple token colors (so far just this Imperial Assault set, X-wing, and the half poison / half burning Malifaux set) I prefer a darker frame color. So I think black, grey, military green, or maroon would look best. Let me know what you think once I post those pics!
weeble - Hmm, you could be right and as I had an artist create this image as a vector I can easily alter it. However, it's pretty similar to the official art, so don't shoot the messenger
RiTides wrote: weeble - Hmm, you could be right and as I had an artist create this image as a vector I can easily alter it. However, it's pretty similar to the official art, so don't shoot the messenger
I had no idea what the FFG art looked like, and I was tempted to leave it alone as I figured it might have been evocative of the game icon. But then again, if you see something, say something, especially if it is a .
I have considered that (and another backer suggested it), but I wasn't sure what people would really do with it! I am making the ModCube Tool (with Kickstarter label) and including that with each set, and it has a fairly large center area cut out that is currently discarded, which I could use for something like this. But it's made from a thicker material than the tokens for the cubes. So, it's posible I could include a few squares (to use as first player tokens, maybe?) but again I just wasn't totally sure of the use for them... if there are some good ones let me know so I can see what's possible
ModCubes compatible with Maelstrom's Edge revealed! This is just a sampling due to the time remaining, of course, and I'll show off the full set shortly after the campaign ends. Let me know what you think
ModCube set compatible with Maelstrom's Edge revealed!
We'll be showing off a preview of a new ModCube set every day this week! Yesterday we revealed Star Wars: Imperial Assault, and today we're showing off a ModCube set compatible with the new game Maelstrom's Edge. Check it out!
This is just a sampling, but you can pledge for the full set and all of the tokens will be revealed shortly after the campaign!
Above are tokens indicating the 3 forms that Angels can take (Combat Form, Winged Form, Slasher Form) along with a special ability of the Kaddar Nova (Kinetic Boost). The last two are something you can do to your Epirian robot units each turn (Enabled) and a general effect (Pinned, from taking too much suppression!).
Not shown but will be included in the set are: On The Move, Shield Mode (also from the Kaddar Nova), Painted (another Epirian trick, similar to Tau marker lights), and possibly Activated, since this is an alternating activations game. There will also be tokens showing dual effects, such as Enabled / Pinned.
Haven't heard of Maelstrom's Edge before? Check out their Kickstarter at the link below, which ends tomorrow! The Angel is the model shown below, alongside a Hunter for the opposing faction (which will be my faction... go robots =)).
I'm still not sure if I want to use the MEdge's Suppression tokens, Or use numbered dice. Their tokens will look cooler, but take up more space. I guess I'll have to try out the beta rules and see how it goes!
Oh! and your package arrived today! I have to pick it up after work, but I'll be jumping on that tonight. See if I can't get something thrown together, and photographed/videoed for you to see by the end of this week.
I actually hadn't planned to have suppression tracking on the cubes, just other statuses / effects, but if there is leftover space in the set I might consider it. It just looks like you can get a whole lot of suppression going at once in this game so I need to figure out if it'd be worth including, as I think there are enough other options to fill out the set (particularly with wanting to mark each unit as "Activated" along with "Pinned" or "On the Move", so there will be some dual token options in the set).
Well hopefully I hear about my wife's promotion early tomorrow. If she gets it then I'll be adding to this KS, and only because the tokens look cool I'll jump in on the MEdge kickstarter too. If she doesn't get it then I'm just going to up my pledge here.
Triple Reveal - Star Trek and D&D Attack Wing, plus Hacker set! Only hours to go!!
How much content can we cram into one update!? Let's find out:
First, Star Trek: Attack Wing set revealed!
Next, D&D Attack Wing set revealed!
Note that there may be a few additional tokens in the D&D set (particularly text tokens, which you can use separately or put into spare cubes).
Finally, a huge thanks to backer Vanguard-13 for testing out putting LEDs into ModCubes - the first ModCube hack! These could make some amazing cosplay items if you light them up from the inside, so we'll be offering the blank tokens in a translucent white that transmits only 33% light, and can give the effect below when combined with LEDs:
If you're the sort that likes to do a bit of tinkering with LEDs, just select the translucent white blank tokens - AKA the "hacker" set =). Note that LEDs will not be included, just the translucent panels.
We're down to hours to go, so please share this update with anyone who might be interested and help us get a push to the finish!
Next update will reveal the SciFi Crates set. Until then, keep on modding!
Let me know what you guys think and again huge thanks to Vanguard for lighting up that ModCube so quickly. It looks amazing and now I'm going to have to try it with mine!!
To do that will I think require masking off the negative space and painting it black, so that just the icon remains translucent. I'll certainly be giving it a try with mine
With the add ons for extra cubes, I just add the required amount on to my pledge right? I don't wait for the survey and add and pay for them there, do I?
Welcome, Blacksails, thanks very much for pledging!! We got 32 new backers today (most since Day 2!), if we can get similar interest these last two days then we will have hit $40K
With the add ons for extra cubes, I just add the required amount on to my pledge right? I don't wait for the survey and add and pay for them there, do I?
Yes, you can just add the amount to your pledge by clicking the "Manage" button just under the pledge amount on the Kickstarter page. These are the current add-ons:
8 cubes (no tokens) - $15
80 tokens (no cubes!) - $15
A full set of ModCubes (8 cubes, 80 tokens, plus the ModCube Tool and bonus cube in any color!) - $25
...and a secret add-on, $5 for the "Dice Maniacs" add-on, for people who are getting the rainbow set of cubes and want to get the last few colors (a single set of cubes is 9 after the bonus cube, but there are 12 colors, so this is to fill it out with the last 3 colors). This add-on is only for filling out the rainbow set, and as you may have guessed, was requested by a group of dice... maniacs on facebook (dice collectors who really want one of each type!).
Wait -- How do you make a translucent LED modcube? TIA!
EDIT:
Vanguard-13 about 10 hours ago
@Bryce Hannigan - I only had an hour or so to play with it, but I used some extremely small button cell batteries. 3 batteries, 2 LEDs, and a Resistor. It took some creative wiring to fit it all in. I am still working on these, and I want to get a better glow. So keep tuned for further mods and hacks!
Yeah, a LED modcube would be an interesting KS project in itself. I've seen LED KS projects, but an LED modcube would be something I'd be more interested in because it sounds like a project I could actually do.
ced - I know, right?! That's totally something I'm going to be playing around with in my "free" time and Vanguard already is. There are some insanely cool possibilities with lighting these things up with LEDs!
varag - Next week I'll send out the BackerKit survey and will have some very clear visuals on the different cube and token color combinations. I don't want anyone unhappy with their combos, and may actually restrict the auto-select options to only ones that look good together (possibly allowing a backer to override it if they really want to). So that should help with the decisions! I'm hoping to get those surveys back quickly, but will allow people to make changes to their selections for a little while afterwards so that there's not too much anxiety about filling in the survey
If you've been on the fence make sure you check out the page while there's still time
Wow, we've already rocketed past the SciFi Crates stretch goal! Here is a preview of the what that set will look like, along with some models for scale:
There will be more options for this set, this is just a taste! Also, would people like to have the set come in multiple colors as shown, or just pick a single color from these options to have their set made in?
We've been getting a fantastic boost as we approach the final day, so keep spreading the word! A stretch goal has been added for a set compatible with Mantic's Deadzone at $44,000, and we might be able to squeeze in one last stretch after that if time allows!

This add-on is only for filling out the rainbow set, and as you may have guessed, was requested by a group of dice... maniacs on facebook (dice collectors who really want one of each type!).
So, this Dice Maniacs option .... is this:
a) for real (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease)?
b) $5 a set? Or a flat $5 upgrade? (I'm expecting a set, since on the larger pledges that could easily be a couple full sets worth of cubes ... )
Beltendu - Yes, it is for real! And you're right that it's $5 per set. You can use it to bring any rainbow set up to a full 12 cubes in all the colors (we'll get your selections in the survey next week)
Necros and Orlando - Thanks! I think for the crates set I may offer it in single colors (metallic on red, metallic on blue, or metallic on black) or a single mix (some of all of those 3, with the panels likely themed, so biohazard would be on red, for example).
It's been a pretty intense last 12 hours, and still over 24 hours to go! We've got Firestorm Armada at $40K and Deadzone at $44K to aim for
I would love to see Mod Cubes do as good or better then 70k.
I love all the options, I want one of everything. But now then I've held a cube and seen how chaotic the tiles can be...
Is there any work on boxes or storage cases for these? The acrylic is pretty resistant, but I'd still like to be able to easily sort my tiles, and keep my mod cubes safe.
If nothing else, I'll be cutting some foam from one of my old Anemometer cases for these cubes and tiles.
Am I the only one who'd love to plop a case down, snap open the latches and have all my cubes, tiles, and tools all clean, neat and awesome looking?

ShaneTB - Thanks!!
Vanguard - No work on boxes yet, but I am going to be looking into ones that are a good fit - I'm very hopeful that there is a stock solution that would make sense, especially since these are so close in size to 19mm dice.
Sinful Hero - Yes, with ModDeux you can select two different themes, and you'll get 80 tokens for each (along with 9 cubes each, so 18 cubes total!)
Jangustus and Beltendu - Cheers guys
We've hit 40K, the Firestorm Armada set is going to be in!! So that just leaves Deadzone at 44K . I've got one last thing to pull out if we get to it, so we'll see!
I backed this a couple weeks ago after it came up on another forum, had no idea it was another Dakka project. Tough decision on the sets though, could use four or five of them really, but not a chance of affording that many
I would love to get the word out to a few more sites now that we've entered the last 24 hours! Still couldn't find a contact over at BOLS, although a ton of other places have plugged us which has been amazing
RiTides wrote: Very cool, NTRabbit, what forum was that?

Yeah, I wanna say it took 24ish hrs to for ours to go through. Once your in though its pretty easy to use, it'll auto post anything from your RSS Feed as a post from you.
Blacksails - Cheers, I'm personally the most excited about Guildball, but those FSA players were extremely patient!
You might even get a little more money out of me yet. I'd like some tokens for 40k (or sorry, 'Sci-fi'), X-Wing, and FSA. I'm work blocked at the moment (but can still access Dakka...yay government), there's still time left right?
Blacksails - Yes, the campaign ends tomorrow, so you've still got time to add a set!
Stormwall - Which 40K set are you thinking? The Vehicles set is the one I made first, but I think the Objectives set is actually the one I like best - it's just such a great fit . When the edition changes you won't be stuck with custom dice for 7th ed objectives, you can just get an upgrade token set! And flipping them to the face of the mysterious objective just feels natural

I will probably get the vehicles one, even if the second one is tempting.
Final stretch goal - free tokens!! Just 10 hours to go!
Here is the final stretch goal - a free token with every set of ModCubes you pledge for =)
We're able to include these free (your choice of arrow or exclamation point with each set!) because we will be cutting them out of the interior of the ModCube Tool pieces! If you missed the ModCube Tool update earlier, it's also free with every set you pledge for, and you can see a video of how you can use it to easily pop the ModCubes apart here:
Here are the final remaining stretch goals... can we do it?!
- $44,000 - ModCube set compatible with Mantic's Deadzone
- $46,000 - ModCube set compatible with the new game Guildball!
- $48,000 - Final Stretch Goal - Free Tokens!
Finally, here is something we've been waiting for - an independent video review of the ModCube for use with X-wing, by a very reputable X-wing gamer, Aaron Utley who runs the Stele Open (one of the most concentrated high level groups of X-wing players you're ever going to run into). Check out his thoughts below!
We'll make a thorough update showing our timeline for the survey tomorrow, and if we're able to unlock these last two sets we'll be revealing them over the next week and a half (before the survey goes out!), along with the Firestorm Armada set we unlocked yesterday. We hit an amazing 100 new backers yesterday alone!!
So $44,663 with 6 hours to go, I think we can still hit the 48,000 easy. That's only 150 more sets give or take.
I know I want to grab a fourth set, but not sure what I'd do for them. Right now my selection is
X-wing
Infinity
(Unknown) maybe crates
Black set (extra grey)
Yellow set (extra grey)
Rainbow set (with $5 extra four cubes) if this comes with an extra cube then grey here as well.
Now if I bump to a fourth set then I'll change the unknown/crates to be the sci-fi game cubes (might get back to 40K some year) and the 4th set be the vehicle set.
Then the cubes themselves do a second rainbow and add another $5 bonus four colors.
I think that takes me to $119 with shipping if I figure correctly.
$55 mod duex
$30 rainbow set with all 12 color cubes
$30 rainbow set with all 12 color cubes again
$4 shipping for my zip code from the mod duex order.
Do I need to add more shipping because of the extra sets?
No extra shipping required, Theophony, thanks for asking! Also, I sent you a PM
We crossed the $46K stretch goal and the 2 hours remaining mark nearly simultaneously, so it's going to be close to hit the last goal at $48K! Any of your lurkers, give it a look while it's still live, even pledging $1 will give you a chance to up it later!
While I won't pass them up if we only get to $47,000, I must point out "WE ARE DAKKADAKKA" what other website has members that come up with, create, kickstart, fund and deliver Flying Assault Butts? We can do $48k
Woot, thanks Cyporiean! It was really funny seeing like 4 people scramble to pledge in the last 30 seconds with the final one being HP Lovecraft... creepy!
We're going to call that close enough for the free tokens . Update coming now! I'm especially thrilled with the backer count, 740 backers is just incredible and more than I had imagined.
My wife and I are going to go celebrate and then it's back to work getting this fulfilled for you all!
Yeah. My buddy tried pledging at the last minute and had issues with his connection or something. When he it the button on the last step, it was too late. Anyway for him to still get in?
Dashrendar, I'll shoot you a PM! I don't have anything set up for this but since he was in the process of pledging I will make an exception for him
Here's the final results:
Despite backing so many campaigns, nothing could really prepare me for seeing this from the other side with 63% of our funds raised and backer totals coming from the 2 starting and 2 ending days of the campaign!
Congrats, Only wish i could have backed this but with my car giving up the ghost a few times this month and now needing a new one made it imoposible for me. I hope to get these when you hit retail with them, and wish you all the best with all the packing and shipping.
Well I have to say this was one of the better run Kickstarters. Great interaction with the creator, 23 updates, crap load of new ideas and he took feedback and made MODifications on the fly. True innovation I. The works and all with a passion from gaming . Was hoping my wife got her promotion so I could have gotten more, but I'll settle for the four sets I ordered. Now onto fulfillment , the part where great kickstarters go to die.
I want a picture of the boxes full of parts organized into a giant rainbow of colors before you start sorting and shipping.
Aww yiss. Time to go buy like 4 dice bags to keep all the different sets of tokens in.
Can't wait to toss all these stupid cardboard X-Wing tokens, dumb, shaky servo skull objective stands and awful cardboard Malifaux chits into cold storage!

Congrats, RiTides. Now the hard part comes... first, deciding what exactly it is that I want.

last 3 or 4 KSers. Real tired of your gak whoever is behind this.
I'd check to see if you accidentally mistyped your number, e proration date or security number on the back into the card page. Otherwise my only guess would be your married and have too many boxes of models visible for your wife to see. You need to hide them in shoe boxes in her closet as we all know they never look to see if they already have black high heels, or flats before buying another set.
Thanks for the well wishes, guys! It's awesome to see how many familiar names/handles will be using these cubes in several months time
Got in a call with the cube manufacturer this evening (they're west coast time) and have finalized the last detail we were waiting on, which is a final surface finish being applied to the mold before beginning the production run. The timing of that being finished and my being ready to give them the color quantities for the run after the survey should coincide really nicely!
Piston Honda, my guess would have been something that was entered wrong, too (even your billing address) that Kickstarter has stored and is thus repeating the same mistake until you fix it manually each time.
notprop, we will be turning this around quickly so retail is not too far off, hopefully late October. We've had a number of people say they missed out by mistake (which is really encouraging to hear on the one hand!) so will have a mechanism for folks to get in on the pledge manager when it comes out in 1.5 - 2 weeks time, for just a brief window.
And cheers for the comments guys! No more Kickstarters for the cube, Theophony, as the goal here was to cover the capital costs and then sell them directly and in stores in the future
If we are successful with these, there may be other gaming aids and products in the future, but we are very much focused on the present and delivering well on these!

Once I get mine I can make a side trip to miniaturemarket.com and let them see them firsthand. I've talked with a few of the peeps there and they do Star Wars x--wing tournaments on a semi regular basis. Maybe donating a set as a prize to the winner might help get word out. I usually don't play at stores, but St. Louis is blessed with at least a dozen game stores, and I just happened across another card game only store yesterday on my way to work.
Update showing all possible token and cube color combos! If my math is right, for folks who choose to split their sets into two different cube colors, there are over 700 options available
Update #24 - June 12, 2015
Here are the final token colors for the ModCubes!
Progressing from the top left across each row, they are:
- Black on Silver
- Metallic on Black
- Metallic on Blue
- White on Black
- White on Purple
- Black on Yellow
- White on Red
- White on Blue
- White on Green
The first option (black on silver) replaces the grey we were testing previously, since the white on grey did not provide good contrast. Also, for now we have decided we can't offer the red on metallic as a standard choice - the material we experimented with was from a different manufacturer, and again doesn't have as good of contrast (in this case compared to the other metallics). If your heart was set on metallic on red, send me a private message and we'll see what we can do, but we think the white on red looks much better!
Here is a picture showing each of these token colors in the dozen cube colors - every option available! This gives you over 100 different choices =) if you're selecting a single cube color, or over 700 different choices if you're splitting your set into two cube colors:
Note that the purple and blue tokens look similar in this picture, so refer to the first picture in the update to see how these tokens stand out from each other. Other than sets with fixed colors (X-wing and Imperial Assault) due to gameplay, you will get to choose both your cube colors and token colors in the survey, so figure out which combination you like best!
We will be targeting Monday, June 22nd or Tuesday June 23rd to send out the survey, as Kickstarter strongly recommends waiting 2 weeks for the pledges to clear first (otherwise it's a bit of a logistics nightmare). We're hoping to place the production run order for the cubes within a week of sending out the survey, if we can get 75% of the surveys back to give us a good indication of color ratios to order for the cubes. We'll also have a limited window for Paypal backers to join in once the survey goes out, and a chance to add on to your pledge in BackerKit!
Finally, we'll be continuing to work on the remaining sets and the tweaks to the current sets over the coming weeks. It makes sense to start production on the sets that are ready (or very close to ready), while the others are finished. To that end, our full-time laser cutting summer hire will be starting on Thursday, June 25th.
Until next time, keep on modding!
I'd love to hear any thoughts folks have on the different color options . There were some surprising combos in there that I ended up liking, which is why it was totally necessary to lay them all out like this!
Only one cube color missing: White. But I don't see that as a big loss really.
I really like the dark green cube for some reason. It seems to show imperfections, and comes across as a very "Swampy" feeling. It's perfect. Like something you'd use for a Cryx, Necron, or Zombie army.
All the tiles look amazing. I really like the silver based tiles. They just seem to pop and look the best.
I'm all about the red/orange/yellow and purple cubes (not sure what I'm going to get from those yet)
I think the black/silver and red/white go best with them (although in isolation without the cubes I'd originally been tempted by the black/yellow option)
Vanguard, thanks! Regarding white, yes it's been noted by a few folks, but because the acetal raw material is not truly white, it's harder to make (they can add coloring to achieve any of the other colors, but not white). Also, the imperfections in the coloring in these pics is just due to these being painted samples - the black and orange cubes are the final colors straight from the mold, but the others are painted (except purple, which is from the mold but the final version will be just a shade darker).
Orlando, I had a really hard time imagining which tokens would look good in which cubes, and my gut instinct was different on some of these! I'm partial to the two drab colors (maroon and military green) myself and I'm thinking with purple tokens.

Congrats, RiTides. Now the hard part comes... first, deciding what exactly it is that I want.
Yep, that's a lot harder than coming up with the money for a few sets...so many color choices!
Well that happened sooner than I expected, that is how you know that ModCube was a good idea, it is already being emulated. Should have had the design patent. ^_^
Dark Severance wrote: Well that happened sooner than I expected, that is how you know that ModCube was a good idea, it is already being emulated. Should have had the design patent. ^_^
The idea is the same, of course. I think we've all wanted to have custom dice made. This is certainly another way to do it.
Not sure if I would invest in it though. It seems... cheaper somehow.
Maybe it's just me being Biased. But RiTides' Mod Cubes seem a lot more engineered and stable. These Askrias Cubes seem more like model kits. Meaning you'd have to build it, Alter things to fit, and Glue them in place.
Yeah it isn't that the idea itself is unique, we've done them in our own methods. Mod Cube was the first to make it a reality with a modular design. I've actually had something I use but it involves stickers from GameCrafter and dice that I have used. But the problem is stickers.
On one hand stickers makes it easier for every person to make their own 'custom' sides. It also allows full color, better images for visuals. But on the other hand, it is stickers. I don't like using stickers because it is probably the OCD in me, they have to be put on the cube perfectly and if its off, it really bugs me. LOL!
$120 for 20 dice... I'm getting 36 for $105.
Those panels are going to be a pain to remove and the stickers are going to be a mess to line up correctly.
I'm extremely happy with ModCubs.
One of the images claims that the sprues were designed in January. *shrug*
Very interesting, thanks for the link! We do have patent pending but that design is clear of ours, as they have panels that must be injection molded (our patent specifically calls out panels that are completely flat, so that they can be laser cut or punched from flat material, which made the cube design a lot trickier). There are a lot of custom dice on the market already that require injection molded panels, but I think what sets the ModCube apart is how quickly we will be able to make new panel sets and how many tokens we can include in each set due to how we're making them. I wish those guys all the best with their project!
New update is posted, this will be the last one before the pledge manager goes out on Tuesday. From what we can tell, every single pledge payment has cleared!
A huge thanks to Vanguard-13 for working on the "GlowCube" shown in this update, and hopefully we can offer the LED kits as an add-on later on once it is perfected . See more on it below:
Update #25
GlowCube 2.0 and Friends of ModCube
Hey Modders! We're working hard on finalizing the BackerKit pledge manager and are on track to have it ready to send out on Tuesday. In the meantime, here are a few cool things to check out! First, the GlowCube 2.0:
Super-backer Vanguard-13 has been hard at work on these, and is looking into being able to offer the LED kits he is using to light them up. These now incorporate a switch on the bottom face so that you can turn them on and off without disassembling! Very exciting stuff =) although unfortunately a bit labor intensive to create, as well.
We will be looking at offering the glow kits as an add-on for folks, and will send along instructions for this if we're able to do so. To have the designs themselves glow (or the inverse, the space around the designs glow) would also require painting around the etched area. This is also possible, but needs looking into... so, stay tuned!
This thread will likely get moved back to News & Rumors when the pledge manager goes out next week, since there will be a brief window for folks to join in on the campaign who missed it then
RiTides wrote: I'd love to hear any thoughts folks have on the different color options .
The cubes are two pieces, right? So... Two tone?
I decided showing 2-tone cubes would just be too many pictures to take in but I certainly plan to mix colors on some of mine! I particularly like cubes that are half black / half other.
Ok, so I got my survey this morning (on schedule!)
The hard choices were made and I only had to add $30 worth of more stuff to my order... Great job, RiTides... I hope cutting and fulfillment go well for you.
Thanks, Anpu-adom! The intern starts on Thursday so like always it's busy busy here
Here's the update showing the survey is out, and late backer instructions! I'll be messaging folks who asked me about becoming a late backer tonight - if you don't hear anything please ping me.
Update #26 Pledge Manager link sent! Check your email . Also late backer instructions
Just a moment ago, I clicked the link to send out the pledge manager survey from BackerKit. Please check your spam folder if you don't see it! It is from "support@s.backerkit.com"
There are a lot of questions, but the end result is that the survey will itemize your order and really help us fulfill it. Please take a moment and fill it out today =). We would really like to get back 75% of the surveys in a week!
The pledge manager will remain open until the last token sets are finalized (which will be happening while we produce the earlier sets, so likely until late July) and your card will not be charged for any additional add-ons until then. So, you can always go back in later and tweak your selections / add more if you change your mind about anything =)
Finally, we will be messaging each person who asked about becoming a late backer - in order for you to join in on one of the pledge levels, we'll need to send you a Paypal invoice and add you in manually. So, look for a message on that today if you're one of those folks, or feel free to ping us if you haven't heard anything.
We'll leave you with some pictures showing all the color options you can choose for your ModCubes in the survey:
Spoiler:
Until next time, keep on modding!
It seems I somehow left off the MEdge option for the tokens, though, so fixing that now...
Wow, you do like bright colors . I like that mix, they should be very eye-catching on the table!
I've added in the Maelstrom's Edge tokens to the first token question option, so if anyone is after just one set of those tokens, make sure to select them in your first token question in the survey! I'll have them added to the other questions later tonight.
Black, Red, and 2 extended rainbow sets. I'm also getting the X-Wing, and all three 40k sets. I sprung for another infantry set, since I play orks.
Man... tough tough choices all around.
X-Wing is going in Black for sure. I went with Red for the Objectives and black on yellow for the infantry and vehicle sets.
I was completion number 31, so they are certainly rolling in quickly.
Sinful Hero, I've sent you a PM to get your backer name / email, and I will check on yours manually / resend the link.
I've gotten just over 300 responses so far which is great! Uncovered a small number of bugs (need to add multi-colored as an option for the SciFi crates, white as an option for blank, etc) but mostly smooth sailing so far. I can see why BackerKit is popular - while it was quite a pain to set up, and they take a fee, it will make collating the data to place the cubes order next week so much easier! And also will help with laying out how many of each color acrylic we need to cut per set.
Well I'm in for all black, all grey triple rainbow and two x-wing sets. Probably get another set of tokens and cubes later, but I think my MODplan is covered for now.

We're certainly trying really hard to be on time, Alpharius / Solar_lion . There's tons to do, but the laser cutting intern starts tomorrow, so we are officially entering the production stage!
Here's an update with late backer instructions and a few bug fixes, please forgive the wall of text:
Update #27 - Late Backer Instructions, and a few bug fixes!
The response rate to the pledge manager has been really great so far - 433 answered, 303 to go! This adds up to 736 instead of 740, because 4 folks chose "no reward". If you are one of those folks and change your mind, just let us know =) and we can add you.
On that note, here are the late backer instructions! If you know someone who missed out on the campaign but wanted to join in, just point them to this update =)
Late Backer Instructions
Send a message to info@modcube.com, or message us here on Kickstarter (by clicking our account name "3rd Dimension Gear", then "Contact"). Please include:
1. Your name
2. Email Address
3. Desired pledge level (you can change this in the survey): $30 for 1 set, $55 for 2 sets, $80 for 3 sets, or $100 for 4 sets (plus shipping, automatically added in BackerKit)
That's it! We'll then you add you into the pledge manager, and you can pay right in BackerKit. Your card won't be charged by BackerKit until the pledge manager is closed, which will be around the end of July. Once we add you (which should be shortly after receiving your info) you will receive an email from "support@s.backerkit.com" with a link to the pledge manager.
Pledge Manager Bug Fixes
BackerKit has been mostly amazing so far, there were just a few small bugs that needed fixing! They are:
- The Maelstrom's Edge theme wasn't showing up as an option in the pledge questions, and now has been fixed to show up for just the first two token questions in the survey (it's a very manual process to add an entirely new set once the survey has gone out). So, if you want Maelstrom's Edge tokens please select them as one or both of your first two pledge questions!
- The "mixed colors" option wasn't showing up for the SciFi Crates set, and is now fixed.
- For the Blank sets, the top of the token is the first color listed. So, for example, Metallic on Black selected as a Blank token set, would be metallic on top, black on the bottom. You could use the bottom, of course! Many of the tokens are white on the bottom.
- Finally, the survey does not prompt you to select your ModCube Tool color and free token for sets you add on in the survey (as opposed to sets that come with your pledge level). This was an oversight, but it is hard to get the genie back in the bottle now that the survey is out! We will still include a ModCube Tool with your add-on sets, you just can't select the color (when packing, we'll try to match it to your others - if you picked red tools with arrow tokens, that's likely what you'll receive for the add-on tool). Sorry for the oversight!
Please also note that it is the full add-on sets (cubes + tokens for $25 total, listed as $12.50 each in the add-ons section) that come with the bonus cube and tool, but we will try to toss in extra tools where we can for folks who added on a lot of things, even if they aren't full sets =)
Well, thanks to upgrading my $55 pledge to $100 (plus add ons) I now have five sets headed my way including the 2 full rainbows, all black, all yellow, and all grey. 2 x-wing sets, infinity set and a translucent set which I have a light kit ready to play with .
You were the very first late backer, notprop, so thanks for leading the way
That's a nice set, Theophony, and I'll be interested to see your light kit! We're hoping to make the one Vanguard-13 is working on something we can offer as an add-on later (but are focused on producing the tokens here first, of course).
Update showing the first 112 token sets produced, we've got about 1500 to get through to fulfill the Kickstarter! This is after just a few days of production and we have picked up the pace now that the intern is trained on the laser cutter, so things look good to have all the tokens cut in July:
Update #28 Production update, and 78% of surveys are in!
Here's a quick pic of the first 112 sets we've produced just a few days into production:
We've got another 100 full sheets of acrylic en route to us, and will be looking to produce about 1500 sets of tokens to fulfill the Kickstarter. Production times are looking good to get all the tokens cut in July!
While our laser cutting intern is hard at work cutting the tokens, I've been doing a lot of the logistics. Here are where a few other items are at:
- Final production samples of the cubes are expected later this week, and the 50,000 parts (25,000 cubes) production run will be begun as soon as I approve these! This last set of samples is just to approve the surface finish of the outer faces of the cubes.
- 78% of surveys have been returned, which really helps us know what tokens to cut, so thanks to everyone who has gotten these back to us!
- By far, the most popular token sets are Dogfight, SciFi Vehicles, and SciFi Infantry. These are also 3 of the 4 initial sets, so we're doing all of these first before moving onto the stretch goal sets. We'll show pictures of each set as it is completed in case anyone wants to adjust their selections based on the final content of the sets (SciFi Infantry, for example, will no longer have Pinned since it is the same as Gone to Ground in the current rules, but will have LD Test and Jink added).
Last but definitely not least, we've gotten a great review from Brazil for the Dogfight ModCubes, so if you know Portuguese (or just want to see some visuals of an X-wing player putting the ModCubes through their paces) check out this video review!
We've also gotten quite a few late backers from Brazil after this review went up, which is awesome! See the previous update for instructions on how to become a late backer if interested =)
You're still in plenty of time Stormwall but I appreciate it, getting in the responses really helps us figure out what to cut and how to do it in the most efficient manner!
The backer numbers are always a bit higher than the actual number of returned surveys (I think due to test submissions while we were setting up the BackerKit interface) but we've had 628 surveys returned and 117 still outstanding. The laser cutter is running pretty much all day cutting tons of the initial sets, and I'm going to use the holiday weekend to finalize some of the stretch goal sets and get them queued up to cut after Dogfight
Also going to watch the US women win the World Cup on Sunday... hopefully!
Any big surprises so far on colors, sets or add ons? Like only two people ordered set color xxxxxxxx while a close third place after black and ???? Was yellow (which I ordered ).
Definitely! The top 10 token sets ordered so far have been:
Dogfight (X-wing)
SciFi Vehicles
SciFi Infantry
SciFi Mysterious Objectives
Game Creator
Infinity
SW Armada
Malifaux
Warmachine / Hordes
Tie between Blank and SW Imperial Assault
The first 4 alone make up over 50% of the orders! The above are also the ones I will try to get into FLGS (although all the sets will likely be available on the website, and a store that wanted Guildball for example could definitely have them!).
The top 5 token colors (not counting mixed sets!) are:
White on Black
Black on Yellow
White on Red
Metallic on Black
Black on Silver
The top 5 cube colors are:
Black
Red
Dark Blue
Orange
Grey
Black alone makes up 30% of the total! But I think this list is a little misleading, because there were so many green options, for example.
They are basically neck and neck (nearly tied) with SciFi Infantry just behind. Every one of the top 10 sets above has at least 65 ordered, but those top two are at about 250 of each. I think it's possible that the SciFi sets would have been higher, but because there are three options for SciFi many people selected one of each.
The numbers will go up a bit still as we've got around 90 people (other than $1 pledgers) who haven't submitted their pledge manager, which will account for up to another 200 sets. So we may have to circle back and cut some extras later, but for now we're just producing the sets and colors people have already selected (with a few extra of the really popular colors, since they're likely to be in the straggler's selections )
We're also extremely close on getting the cube production run underway - I've been on the phone with the factory quite a bit the last two days working out color ratios for the run, along with shipping speed, etc. Just waiting on the very last set of samples showing the final surface finish (they showed me a picture which looks good, but I just need to approve them in-person) which I am set to receive Monday. Due to the delay getting that surface finish finalized, I'll be having at least the "first to ship" cubes sent by air. I'm waiting to hear back the cost of having the entire run shipped by air, just in case it's feasible (but unfortunately I think it probably won't be, since the whole run is 10x the amount of the "first to ship" quantity). If the main production run comes by boat, the projected date to arrive in the US would be the last few days of August (with the "first to ship" cubes getting to me at the very end of July hopefully). I'll be putting this all in an update later this week once the production run has been given the green light!
Here is our second production update, let's get right into it! First, a pic of our laser cutting intern Carlos hard at work bagging tokens sets:
And a shot of the tokens cut so far (we have more shelves, since we're out of space on this one):
There are around 720 token sets shown in the image above (there are 250 Dogfight (X-wing) sets in the white tubs, sorted into their individual colors, to be combined later). This means we're nearing the halfway mark on total token production!
Here are some crazy numbers. With 80 tokens in the normal sets, and 128 tokens (due to half tokens) in the Dogfight / X-wing set, we have cut a whopping 70,000 tokens at this point. Way to go Carlos!!!
Cube Production Progress
However, we have a piece of news that is not as good. We did not approve the surface finish of the (what was planned to be final) samples received from the cube production factory this week, due to an added ridge that showed up after their EDM (electrical discharge machine) finishing process on the outer surfaces, which is intended to give them a slight texture:
It's a bit hard to see in the images, and honestly in-person as well... but it is a blemish and as the one who had to make the call on this, I thought really hard about it. The delay to re-do the EDM finishing process is 3 - 4 weeks (counting from last week)... and I initially told the factory to proceed before deciding it simply was not acceptable. I felt that, if I were the customer (and as someone who will use these cubes a lot myself) getting it fixed was worth it.
This puts us scheduled to be delivering on-time, rather than early, with new sample cubes due to us at the very start of August, and the "first to ship" cubes (which will now be delivered by air) due to us at the end of August, assuming we approve of the sample. We will keep you updated, but hopefully you'l agree that getting a better surface finish on the cubes will be worth a 3 - 4 week delay.
Final Token Set Pictures
As promised, here are the final token set pictures of the sets cut so far. As noted above, we are close to the halfway mark on tokens cut (720 sets so far, out of about 1700 needed). These first 3 sets were extremely popular, with over 250 each of SciFi Vehicles and Dogfight ordered, and over 200 of SciFi Infantry! Updates to each set (if applicable) are listed below the images:
No updates to the SciFi Vehicles set!
As suggested by a number of backers, Pinned was removed (since it just results in a Gone To Ground status in this edition), LD Test and Jink were added, and Malediction / Blessing were numbered 1 - 4 to distinguish different effects. The numbers of some of the tokens were adjusted slightly (3 each of the flyer and multi-wound options, instead of 4).
We decided we did not want to remove any target lock options, so we simply increased the total number of tokens in the set (since this is the most popular set and only available in default colors, so it doesn't have to fit on one sheet and we can mass produce them). The number of half tokens for the most common actions / statuses (focus, evade, stress) were increased as a result, and 2 "Special" tokens were added to account for various upgrades. The total is now 128 tokens (the equivalent of 90 full tokens)!
Upcoming Production
This week we're going to start cutting the SciFi Mysterious Objectives sets, which will put us over the halfway mark! For the next two weeks, our production queue will focus on the following: Game Creator, Malifaux, Warmachine / Hordes, and Blank. We may also move to cutting the ModCube Tools to fill in gaps during production.
After that, Infinite, SW Armada, and SW Imperial Assault will be produced, at which point we'll have over 85% of the token sets cut! That still leaves 7 set themes left to produce, but those final sets have lower quantities ordered and so they will be easier to produce at the end (particularly for anyone that selected them in a "first to ship" tier).
This week will be the final survey reminder email sent to $1 backers, since from experience I know that sometimes $1 backers don't want to continually receive survey reminders (but you can log in to your prior reminder emails and upgrade your pledge anytime). For non-$1 backers, there are 65 of you left to submit (accounting for 139 sets) so please get your selections in if you can!
Finally, please comment below if larger updates every 2 weeks like this are good with you - we had some comments about too many updates and we'd like to have lots to report each time =).
Until next time, keep on modding!
Theophony, I'm planning to only make an official update every 2 weeks if that is OK - then I can also make meatier updates. If you guys have questions you can always ping me here or in the comments in the interim, I am almost always available! Let me know what you think
Thanks for the support, guys! And WM, having watched Episode 3 recently I could actually hear ObiWan saying that
Yeah, I was extremely torn about the surface finish question - so much so, that I actually paid the 50% fee to start the production run, then called and stopped them before they actually began running the parts and told them I wanted it fixed. They totally agreed with me, and it had just escaped their notice (it really is hard to see from most angles, and when going to pick up the cubes and compare old to new, I often mix up the two at first).
But it IS definitely noticeable from certain angles, and makes the cubes not perfectly flat on that surface, and I think well worth waiting 3-4 weeks to fix. What really swayed me was what I would personally want as a customer... and I know it's to have it fixed, given the timeframe we're talking about (if they had estimated more than that, I would have likely preferred to have just gone ahead with it).
Obviously, I still have to approve the next set of samples, but I am very hopeful it will be right this time. I've been very impressed by the company I'm working with, and they have sent me numerous sets of samples and been very easy to work with and make adjustments (this is actually my second time working with them, although this is a much larger project than the first). I'll keep close tabs on their progress on continue working like mad on the tokens on our end!
Sinful Hero, re: Infinite set, yes I'm looking forward to that one myself but it by far requires the most changes over what was originally shown of any of the sets, so that's why we're jumping on a few of the others first that are ready to be produced, even though it was one of the original sets. I anticipate having all the Infinite sets done by the first week of August.
getting it right is far, far, far more important than being early (or even on time)....
You're certainly not going to want to decide it needs to be fixed when stores start getting cubes back because some people don't think they're quite right (even if most never notice)
Thanks, Orlando, and that's what I ended up deciding, too.
No danger of that Alpharius . Our focus after this will just be selling these on the website and hopefully in some stores, too (already have interest from several, but waiting to finalize anything until after getting all of the Kickstarter sets produced, of course).
Just a micro text update to say that by the end of today we'll have finished producing the following sets:
SciFi Mysterious Objectives
Warmachine / Hordes
Malifaux
Game Creator
Blank
And we're going to be starting in on Imperial Assault on Monday . We saved two heavy hitters for next week: Infinity and Star Wars: Armada, which should take most of the week (unless something like Star Trek: Attack Wing leapfrogs one of them, since it's very close to ready to go). But progress is looking good, and I'll be posting pics of each completed set next week!
Just this last weekend we played a 12000 per side game. Kept thinking how useful these would have been with the number of units on the table. Looking forward to showing them off for the next one!
RiTides, I think people have asked this before, but, if everything goes to plan, will we be able to pick our pledges up at Nova, or will that be a bit too much of a logistical nightmare? I'm in the first to ship group, but I'd rather you save on the shipping cost to be honest.
Solar_lion - Awesome and I've sent you a PM about the sets for volunteering at AdeptiCon!
Master - I've been talking to the Nova guys, but because I won't have any to sell and will be in the midst of packing up Kickstarter orders, we may not end up getting a table / booth, or if we do it may end up being a bit last minute. However, there are some local players who are hoping to use their cubes at Nova, and if you are in the "First to ship" group it's much more likely that I can get them to you there. If possible, ask me about this again in a few weeks and I should have a much better answer!
d-usa - *Table flip* If you're in the "First to ship" group and want all purple tokens, I'm going to find you . I'm kidding of course, and I actually love the purple, but there haven't been too many of it selected so we've cut less of it (easy enough to fix if you do want it!). I think it might not have photographed well (perhaps I should have recruited your expertise there).
On that note, in the update on Tuesday I am likely going to ask if folks would be OK with my locking down the "First to ship" orders next week, even though all sets haven't been shown, so that I can give the factory the precise numbers on the cube color quantities to pull out and air ship. I'll still allow folks in that tier to make changes to their token sets if needed based on the final sets to be shown (via PM) but I need to lock in the cube colors for that group due to the air shipment.
I'll hunt down the email tonight and do the survey. I think I will be a double black kinda guy, but you are making double purple sound pretty interesting there
Heh, I just caught up listening to 'The Independent Characters' podcast, where they mentioned this, and immediately went looking for a thread to see what was up. I know I'm going to be buying a few sets!
That's awesome, Portugal Jones! The Independent Characters have been amazing about the project both for their enthusiasm (in-person at AdeptiCon) and being able to share it to a much wider audience than we ever could! Their interest in Firestorm Armada is what originally got us planning that set, and now I find myself tempted by Halo Fleet Battles, which uses similar mechanics.
d-usa - Maybe it's reverse psychology, and we just made a lot of extra purple tokens that I want you to select
Thanks Blacksails, it really helps as we've only got the intern for another week, and then the remaining sets I'll be back doing the cutting for! He's going to have knocked out the vast majority, though, so the timing worked out really well
Today he should have finished Imperial Assault (and circled back to do the Poison / Burning Only Malifaux sets, which we skipped) and I'll be putting out the update with pics tomorrow. I've also queued him up to begin on the ModCube Tools this week to fill in the gaps between working on sets.
New update, showing all 11 sets completed to date:
Production Update #3 - Pics of 8 new sets!
As you can see above, we've been beavering away, now with 1200 token sets finished, and about 110,000 individual tokens!
Final Token Set Pictures
8 new sets have been finished these past two weeks, bringing us up to 11 completed sets:
As a reminder (and to keep them all in one place for easy reference!) here are the 3 sets shown in the previous update:
Upcoming Token Production
Our intern is putting in his final week, and will be creating all of the ModCube tools and free tokens in the latter part of this week, as well as working on a few of the next sets. The next sets we're going to work on are: Infinity, Star Wars Armada, Star Trek: Attack Wing, D&D: Attack Wing, and SciFi Crates. After that, we'll only have 4 sets left to complete!
If you have any input on the Star Wars Armada set, please post in the comments below or message us directly - we need some inspiration on what to include beyond the command tokens, and would welcome your input.
Cube Production Progress
The factory has been hard at work adjusting the surface finish of the cube mold, and they updated us yesterday that the samples have been completed, and were on their way for review by factory management (no word on the results of that review yet). They will also be sending us these samples, so we will update you all towards the end of next week on the results when we have them in-hand. Here's hoping we can hit "go" on the production run to get our "first to ship" cubes around the end of August =)
Until next time, keep on modding!
A few folks have already posted in the comments about including the defensive tokens in addition to the command tokens - but since these need to be flipped from red to green, I'm not sure if they would work in the cube. I could definitely provide acrylic tokens for them, though - but the red and the green halves would need to be glued together. Hmm... thoughts appreciated!
I think many ships have like 3 of those defensive actions, though... they seem like tokens I definitely will include, but I'm not sure they are a good fit to actually put in the cube.
I may actually be able to glue the sheets together myself, in which case I would provide acrylic red/green defensive tokens (red on one side and green on the other). They wouldn't fit in the cube, but there would be enough command tokens to fill the cubes with (in whatever color was selected for the set) along with a few extras for double commands, plus the red/green defensive tokens.
The final cube samples arrived today, and look great! I've signed off on the production run, and should have a timeline on when we'll receive the "first to ship" cubes on Monday (I'm expecting them to arrive to us here at the end of August). So excited!!
Will make a proper update likely on Monday when I have those dates confirmed
Thanks Orlando . Here's the full update with the firm dates from the factory:
Update #31, Aug 4 2015
Cube Production Update - Full Run Started!
Here's a quick update showing the final cube samples from the factory, which we have approved and begun the production run of!
Here are the projected delivery dates for the cubes to our location here:
- "First to Ship" cubes - August 24th
- Full production run - September 28th
We'll keep you all updated if anything changes, but the factory has been very good about hitting their deadlines so we do not anticipate there being any slippage. This puts us on track to ship the "First to Ship" cubes to backers at the start of September, and the full production run to backers starting at the beginning of October. We'll prioritize sending overseas packages first since they will take longer in transit, so we are hoping everyone will have their cubes in October.
Until next time, keep on modding!
It's possible the cubes will arrive on my birthday, which would be a nice gift after all the stress that surface finishing process caused us!
Very excited to finally get the full range of final cubes in-hand (from the air shipment) and get the production run on the boat . I wanted to see if we could get the whole run air shipped, but it would have cost another $1000 and we already faced a few unexpected costs getting the surface finish right and with the color quantities (some colors have less ordered than others and thus don't yield as good of a price break). We had a buffer in place for that, but couldn't spring for the extra shipping to get all 28,000 cubes from the production run sent at once.
It will actually work out well as we can see the results of our shipping methods with a smaller batch before sending out the remaining orders, since the "first to ship" backers account for about 30% of the packages we need to send.
As always, any questions just ask here or in the Kickstarter comments!
That's a very good idea and definitely something we'd like to offer once we finish up the KS items.
Here are a few quick status updates:
- While our prior intern finished up last week, we have another coming in for 6 full days next week - hoping to knock out all that's left!
- We also are set to receive the yellow, light green, dark green, and burgundy "first to ship" ModCubes from the factory tomorrow (these were the first colors shot and finished before the rest).
- Today we sent the final addresses to our European distributor for the "first to ship" wave (except for two we're waiting on) and sent reminder emails to everyone in the "first to ship" tier who hadn't yet finalized their pledge manager (2 international and 4 domestic backers).
- Finally, I'm currently wrestling with the art for some of the remaining sets, and will be doing so pretty intensely for the next week... send Red Bull!
The 5,000 "First to Ship" cubes have arrived, with the last batch just coming in today!
The full production run (another 22,000 cubes) will be arriving in late September for the bulk of the pledges, but this will enable us to ship the first 200 "first to ship" pledge tier packages soon, starting in the first week of September!
We've also finished producing several new (challenging!) sets - Infinite, ST Attack Wing, and SW Armada:
Thank you very much to the backers who gave feedback on these sets, your input was invaluable!
Note that the larger tokens for SW Armada are to be used separately from the "Command Cubes" (they look great alongside them). These larger defense tokens are all translucent green, which matches the appropriate in-game color and allows you to see what token they are when flipped over (this "flipping" mechanic meant they needed to be separate from the cubes). The designs are also painted to make it even easier to see what they are when flipped. They work really great! Our local playtester for these won the SW Armada GenCon tourney =)
There are 6 sets remaining: 3 will be shown next week, and 3 the following week. Next week will be SciFi Crates, D&D Attack Wing, and Guildball. That will leave the final sets: Firestorm Armada, Maelstrom's Edge, and Deadzone. If you would be willing to give feedback on any of these sets, please place a comment below and I will send you a private message! We particularly want to know the following:
1. Should D&D Attack Wing have half tokens similar to X-wing and ST Attack Wing?
2. What in the world should the set composition be for Firestorm Armada? The token symbols are simple, and Spartan lists out the tokens used very nicely, but the ratios are something we have no idea about!
3. Deadzone also is in great need of backer input!
If you've been following the comments you'll see several backers alerted us to a new "tractor beam" symbol for X-wing, and we were able to squeak in a quick cut to add them into all the X-wing sets:
Pledge Manager Closing!!
The pledge manager will be closed this Sunday, August 23rd, so that we can get the "first to ship" packages ready! Since the last few designs are still to be shown, if you would like to change your selections after this point, please just send us a message =). Note that your card will be charged soon after the pledge manager is closed if you added items through BackerKit.
We'll put out an update next week with the next 3 sets, and news on when to expect your cubes if you are in a "first to ship" pledge level.
We packed 10,000 cube halves into bags of 8 each this weekend, and will be getting the "first to ship" orders ready while finishing up the last few set designs. Update coming at the end of the week! (Friday or Saturday)
Was talking to my FLGS about these. Any idea when they might be able to look at these for stocking purposes? Or someone point me in the right direction so I can point them to it.
Orlando - A little bit but many hands makes less work! The interns were real life-savers this summer
Shotgun - We'll likely be putting them up for general sale in early November, and so have been planning to talk to retailers in late October. If they email info AT modcube DOT com and put "ModCube Retailer Inquiry" or the like in the title, we will reach out then. I know that's a little late for when most retailers get in their holiday stock, but as it's a rather small item we're hoping it's something they can add in.
We're also planning to start small with retailers, to test the waters a bit and see the best format for selling these in stores. There are so many combinations that not all can be offered in stores, but then again certain sets were Much more popular and so it is likely safe to focus on these (with each store knowing their local player base best, of course!).
You posted the link on the comments section of the ks, but I wanted to post it here as well.
That's the sort of picture of plastic crack that makes me happy
thats alright, he can build a new house out of his cubes and move into that. I believe that's the backup plan if this venture failed and the wife kicks him out
Thanks SL and Anpu!! Cubette is not bad . We'll be back in action a bit after 1.5 - 2 weeks (reinforcements coming!) and should definitely still have all the "first to ship" tiers out in September. Really appreciate the well wishes!
Pics of Final 5 Sets and "first to ship" boxes being packed!
And we're back! Thanks so much for the well wishes for our (now bigger!) family these past 2 weeks, it has been an absolutely incredible time. The reinforcements have arrived and we are ready to update you all on our progress.
First, here are pictures of the final 5 sets, which we were about to post when all the excitement happened!
This means we've shown all completed sets except for Deadzone, which we are waiting on the new beta rules for and will be shipping separately to backers who selected that set (your cubes and other tokens will ship along with everyone else's, so no delay there!).
White-on-Black Token Care
From a few local players (who we use as willing guinea pigs =)) we have found out that the white-on-black tokens when handled are more susceptible to "smudging", where dust from the cutting process on the sides and back of the tokens gets pressed into the etchings as they are assembled into the cubes (and is very difficult to remove). To help alleviate this, we're going to be putting each white-on-black token set through an ultrasonic cleaner as we pack them up:
In this picture a few white pens are also visible - for anyone who selected a white-on-black token set, we'll also be including a white pen that could help with touching up any "smudging". Between these two solutions, we hope everyone will be very happy with them!
As a preventative measure, it's best to be very careful when touching the white etched faces and to wash your hands from any residue (which could come from the backs of the tokens themselves) when assembling them. We'll be sure to point this out in the instruction sheet! We'll also be shipping out new, ultra-sonic cleaned sets of white-on-black tokens to those we gave test deliveries to =)
You also could choose to spray the tokens with a varnish (for wargamers, just like sealing a miniature), which completely eliminates the possibility of smudging, but just like with a miniature dulls them a bit, so it would make sense to try this on a spare token first to see if you like the effect. We don't personally plan to varnish ours here, but it is an option to make them extremely robust!
Packaging Progress
And with that hurdle out of the way, we are on to packaging! Super-backer Jorge has joined in and is spearheading getting the 200 "first to ship" boxes packed:
We anticipate finishing packing the 200 "first to ship" boxes by this weekend. Then it's just down to finalizing and printing the instruction sheet, and taking them in batches to the post office! They should all be shipped by the end of next week.
That will use up all of the cubes we have in-house, but the factory has updated us that the full production run is still on track to arrive to us at the end of September (it has been en route to us for several weeks now). That will enable us to pack and ship the remaining 500 packages throughout the month of October, likely aiming for a consistent 125 packages a week.
Until next time!
I don't want to copy over the final pic to the forum, but if you want to see who has kept us happily up the last two weeks just check out the update on KS
The last pic is the best pic sir, never be ashamed . Now if your worried about the MODs crushing you for posting the picture then next time place a marine next to it and call it a scale shot of a large ever growing project .
Congrats again. By the way all three of my projects started sleeping an hour per week of age up till they hit nine weeks and were consistently sleeping 8 hours a night. Hope it all goes smooth for you.
I look forward to my first to ship batch arriving. Tell Jorge to work smarter not faster, I'd rather get my shipment a smidgen late than not at all or incorrectly.
Thanks, guys! And I'll pass on the advice to Jorge, Theophony, but he's actually worked as an engineer for GE in the past helping them improve automation - so he's whipping us into shape on the most efficient "assembly line" for us to use here
So how is planning for MODcube Cubed (The second wave) going?
I think you need a Zombicide: Black Plague set with colored cubes to match the pegs that will come with the dashboards and sets of noise tokens for each. The set would include 12 cubes and 72 tokens (6 for each cube). of course you could toss in a few extras for those really noisy players .
Theophony - if you mean the bulk of pledges (500 packages), we're still waiting on the rest of the cubes, but expect them very soon - I actually just pinged the factory to see if they have an exact date of arrival in CA (still anticipating end of Sept), so that we can get them over here (to Maryland) as soon as possible after they arrive.
Zombicide, Kingdom Death, and Heavy Gear compatible sets are the 3 we'll start working on first after the campaign is fulfilled most likely although I'm not sure when they'll release - ideally by the holidays, but there is a lot else to do after the campaign with getting the web store up and running and getting ModCubes in a few local stores!
The next official update on the Kickstarter will be next week, at which point we will have shipped all of the cubes we have in-house. Talking to the factory right now regarding the main shipment of cubes - hoping we will have it next week!
I was just messing around suggesting a second kickstarter, wasn't actually asking about the non-first to ship. JUst talking out loud really as my hands are full of issues right now and escape to dakkadakka was needed.
RiTides wrote: Theophony - if you mean the bulk of pledges (500 packages), we're still waiting on the rest of the cubes, but expect them very soon - I actually just pinged the factory to see if they have an exact date of arrival in CA (still anticipating end of Sept), so that we can get them over here (to Maryland) as soon as possible after they arrive.

I personally would be interested in Kingdom Death themed cubes, but I'm not sure how useful they would be or how well they would sell considering how... Boutique the product is.
Theophony - In case it wasn't clear (and it probably wasn't ) the sets I was talking about were for a retail release (not a Kickstarter).
That's a good point Sinful Hero - will think about it more once past this delivery push! The full production run is actually arriving in California today, so I've been on the phone a bit working out getting it over here.
Aiming for mid to late November for the existing sets, Nevelon (although that is mostly the webstore opening and a few local stores - I haven't reached out to many stores yet since we're focusing on fulfilling the Kickstarter first).
Shipping update - full production run of cubes received, and "first to ship" packages sent (with the last batch going out tomorrow morning!). Would love to hear what you Dakkanauts think of them, since many of you are in the "first to ship" tier
The production run of cubes has arrived right on schedule at the end of September - here is a pic of the tower of boxes (it was cheaper to ship from the port to here that way!) along with some of them pried open =)
We've shipped almost all of the "First to ship" packages, with the remainder going in the mail tomorrow! Thanks to those who have helped (you know who you are =)). If anyone has advice about printing out postage, please message us here or post in the comments - we're looking into weighing and printing out the postage along with the addresses for shipping the full run, to avoid angry looks at the post office with our tower of boxes!
Finally, one of "First to ship" backers let us know that they were able to still change their address in BackerKit, which wasn't supposed to be possible! We'll be locking that down now, but if you were in this first batch and changed your address in BackerKit between August 30th and now, the package will be on its way to your address as of August 30th. Sorry about that! If anyone is not able to get their package as a result, just shoot us a message and we will make it right =)
The goal now is to send out about 125 packages a week throughout the month of October to have everything shipped this month - we will keep you updated on our progress in the comments and with an update when we are halfway thru the remaining 500 packages. When you receive your package, there are printed instructions inside, or you can just watch this under 2-minute video:
If you're already familiar with how to put the cubes together (they go together by far the easiest WITH the panels in place, by the way!) just skip to the end and watch how to pop them apart using the ModCube Tool. It's really easy once you know where to press but hard to figure out without the instructions or video
Yes, I agree Orlando . That the yellow is only a half-box in that picture is by chance - the lowest quantity ordered was light green, but I think this is just because there are 3 different green options. Light green is actually my favorite of them and I'm using it for my gators!
Theophony - They are quite pokey, so that might not be a good idea . Yours and Solar_Lion's are with me to go in the mail today (actually a second box to SL, as he was a first-to-ship backer but I left out something the first time!).
Anpu - Sorry to hear that =/ hopefully the cubes will cheer you up! What is your Kickstarter name, by the way?
I will be attempting to figure out the black magic that is Stamps.com or a similar service this weekend, so that the full run boxes can be just dropped off at the post. Fingers crossed it works out as that will make shipping the batches much easier!
Now to put them together and then take them to my gaming club in 2 weeks for some X-Wing.
Now perchance there is a place somewhere online that has a list of all possible token combinations needed for each ship that would make it easy to put cubes together?
I don't put on Target Lock / Evade as usually once I get a target lock, I'm focusing and hoping to use it. Obviously, the target lock letter needs to match up for that whole cube (so for example, Target Lock Y for each of the above) and I save the red Y for putting next to the enemy ship (not in a cube).
There should be a resource showing what each ship can do, but I tend to save the weird stuff for a spare cube (such as Ion, Slam, the new Tractor Beam, and maybe Critical Damage). Some ships can't target lock, but they could still use one of your basic cubes (there are enough tokens in each X-wing set to build 8 basic cubes like outlined above, or even with half evades if you prefer that).
The only ship I personally configure differently for is my Phantoms, who get Cloak symbols everywhere I put Target Lock above (since they can't Target Lock, anyway). But that may be just because I was always running a Phantom so knew how I wanted it . There are some spare half tokens if you know you have a ship that generates double focus or double stress, for example (I never have, but it is possible). But unless you're building your list that way and know you'll have that case often, I prefer just to use a second cube. If you do build cubes differently, it can help to use a different color cube for a special one so you know exactly which it is and don't have to hunt for it!
Alpharius - Orange was quite popular, but not the most! The most popular was Black, then Red, then Dark Blue, and a tie between Orange and Grey. So they were pretty popular - thanks! Broncos colors... now if Peyton can just win the Super Bowl (he's on my wife's fantasy team, which basically means he's on my fantasy team ).
Fel would use 2 dice:
Evade
Focus
Evade/Focus
Focus/Stress
Evade/Stress
Stress
For stress on him, I'd use a normal cardboard token. There are many times where he would take an Evade, PTL to a Focus (and a Stress) and then receive another Focus due to to stress.
Did you every give a date for potential retail sales?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Putting together cubes for my small rebel list and they go together perfectly. The only pain in assembly is making sure that all your dice are lined up the same way with each token facing the same direction on all dice, but that is only if you are a bit OCD .
Speaking of OCD: Steve! The half-stress symbol doesn't face the same direction as the half-target lock symbol! I never noticed that until today, how will my anxiety cope with this!!!

Much like the liberal sonic cleaning helped with the metallic tokens, a liberal dose of an adult beverage will help with this issue.
Mine arrived today, and they did improve my mood. At least until I got the "What the crap did you buy?" look from my wife as I was assembling.
So far, I've assembled the following:
40K Objectives
2 Dice for Fel
2 Dice for Phantoms
So I put together three dice with the standard x-wing layout suggested by Steve.
I was thinking about putting together a couple "utility" dice like this:
Focus
Stress
Ion
Critical
Critical/Ion
Weapon Disabled
I'm thinking one regular cube and the utility cube should cover pretty much most possibilities that I could run into as long as I'm not using anything too fancy.
Got mine today ( 1 of 2 ) Awesome. Went together without any problems. Instructions were clear and Modtool worked perfectly.
The Only issue I had was I have to many armies and the variation is gonna require me to create some different combo's. Luckily I got a bunch of cube colors. What I'll probably need to do is get a few more and vary the panel colors.
Good for now. but I'll be doing some retail shopping when available. Now to arrange a game.

I know this look! (I think most wargamers probably do )

For a set of 8 - 9 X-wing cubes (counting the bonus cube), I'd probably want 6 standard, 2 utility... and in my case 1 phantom . To your earlier OCD question, I guess I like stress to face the opposite way of target lock like ying-yang!

First - "ModTool" - Why didn't I think of that! Maybe we'll start calling it that now (instead of "ModCube Tool")
Since d-usa also asked, we're targeting end of November to start selling them on the website, after we're through shipping all the Kickstarter rewards, of course! We will likely sell the cubes and tokens as separate items to help with bookeeping, and so people can just snag more tokens or cubes if needed. It should also help with getting them in a few stores, since then they don't need separate SKUs for black cubes with different token designs - people can just get a bag of black cubes, and a separate bag of tokens.
We have also been thinking about what token colors to put in stores... they may all be possible on the website, but in stores we will definitely need to pick and choose! Likely just going by which are the most popular for the different sets (although we might need to limit the total number of colors, too, or else someone in a shop might see a red set in one token type, but not in another, and not buy since they were after red). Thoughts on that definitely appreciated!
No time to go through it all to check for contents, but It all looks great from here.
I had a idea since about the third day of the kickstarter to try and link these together into an Olympic Rings sort of display and light them up, but they just barely won't interlink. I'll still try and Light them up when I can, which with current family issues won't be for a week or two probably.
All the Colorful glory of the cubes, Minus the tools and the actual tokens which are still in their bags.
Thanks Steve for a really awesome KIckstarter. Hoping to use these soon.
P.S. I'll try and take them up to Miniaturemarket to show them off to the owner/managers.
Wow, did you really snap all those cubes together without panels, nicely done . They actually go together easier with the panels in place, but I'm sure you've gotten the hang of it after this!
It actually looks like so much more once all laid out (Theophony got 5 sets + a few rainbow set fill-outs). Vanguard-13 also just messaged me about the GlowCube inserts he's working on, so we might be able to offer something for lighting them up - ideally I'd love to be able to do so at the retail launch in late November. I'd love to see what you come up with, though!
Maybe you need a P&M blog/ contest with MODcubes, either before kick-off, or after kick-off. Will help sales and get the word out again. Maybe the winner can get an exclusive cube (how hard would it be to get just one batch of "golden cubes" to have as prizes or convention specials)
Theophony - Specials will more likely be token material, the cube colors are set for the moment since it was one large run. There is also a minimum per color (and higher cost), so that limits how many more we can offer. I'm kind of regretting not going with pink instead of dark green, though
Sinful Hero, that's great! The instructions should make things clear but just ping me if you have any questions
notprop, we're not sending out notifications yet (still getting the hang of BackerKit!) but can check for anyone who asks. The "first to ship" EU box is on its way to our distributor, and we're actually packing up the remaining EU orders this week. Of the 500 packages remaining, 108 are to the EU! So we hope to get that on its way early next week, although part of the reason for that is to use an alternate service... international priority is highway robbery . So it will start on its way before the rest of the orders, but might not arrive to the UK for several weeks - we'll keep you all updated!
I got my box on 10/3. I play D&D Attack Wing, so I put together 3 Action Cubes each for me and my son, plus 2 Timer cubes and one Armor cube each. Also put together 3 or 4 generic cubes, with actions and other panels.
The dedicated Action cubes have:
Target
Focus
Dodge
Charge
Pivot
Can Not Attack
These were the biggest reasons I wanted to back the KS. One cube per creature replaces a whole tray of action tokens.
The generic action cubes have
Target
Focus
Dodge
Charge
Exhausted
With either an empty panel, or the burst symbol, which really isn't useful because the cube is not the same size as the burst token.
The set really didn't come with enough Armor markers to be useful, as I could only make 2 cubes. I guess that's enough for maybe 1 player, but not two. It also didn't come with enough Delay Timer markers. I could have used some Disabled panels, which I would have preferred over the two effect panels the set came with.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the set. I also got an X-Wing set, just in case I get back into that game.
kingbob, that's great feedback! We can tweak the DnD composition for the future, could you possibly suggest what to remove / add quantity-wise from the below pic?
I am guessing that Paralysis, Confused, and the Burst symbol are on the chopping block, although that only frees up 4 tokens. But with that, we could reduce the generic timer and shield to 3 (instead of 4) and add 1 to each of the other timer and shields, giving 3 of each face.
Is it useful to build a half armor, half timer cube that you could grab for either case (obviously only works for up to 3 of each, or 4 of one and 2 of the other). Our thinking here was that people would be using up at least 6 of the cubes for the normal game actions, and the leftovers could be used for armor and timer effects. I'm not sure if it's called for, but just to mention this also came up with the Malifaux set with the poison and burning options, and we ended up also offering a dedicated poison and burning only set. So that's something we would be open to, as well!
One other possibility would be to free up those 4 tokens, but to put them into more of the other options, such as Pivot and Can Not Attack.
Let us know any suggestions you have on the set composition and we'll look at getting it tweaked - and thanks again for the feedback
Re: Electroplating, there's a local place that actually does this, but I need to look up how much thickness it adds. The cubes also flex a bit to snap together / pop apart, and I'm not sure if they could still do that once plated without marring the outer surface. But it is something I might try out once orders are fulfilled, as we had originally hoped to offer a metal version before realizing it just wasn't feasible - this could be a compromise
Likely not something that we could sell given the cost of plating, but it could be a cool exclusive or contest/charity item. Ask me about it again once we've gotten everything shipped and the store up!
Theres also Vacuum Metalization- the finish is like the chrome you get on old 80's-90's action figures...
An alternative option to plating- If I remember from the days of yore, the surfaced of my action figures were really tough. Even with hamfisted kids like me playing with them!
In the mean time, Got my cubes and man... are they sweet.
Built up 3 for Wounds (2 black, one orange), a set of 6 objectives, 2 orange/black splits for various fliers, 6 for misc. vehicles, and I still have another Im not sure what to do with yet
Really REALLY pleased with these. Well done, Tides!
The burst token symbol really can't be used in a proper game, since the token is a specific size, and measurements taken from the cube would vary slightly from those using the token. I do use my burst token to indicate Initiative, however...but that's a single token, and really we don't get much use out of putting that into a panel.
The two status panels also don't add much. If you could make a separate of just status names, I could then make Status dice, but that would be a pretty large set, and one that expands with every release. I think it's better to use the original tokens for this.
Looking at the set, I can make 4 dedicated Action dice using Focus, Dodge, Target, Charge, Can Not Attack, and Pivot. This leaves me panels to make 4 partial Action dice of only the primary Action choices (Focus, Dodge, Target, and Charge), but leaves me without out good matching option for the last 2 panels.
For Armor and Delay dice, I can make two cubes. Armor dice has 4, 3, 2, and 1 Armor panels, leaving room for 2 other panels...Ground and Swoop? Exhaustion? For most 120 point games, 2 Armor dice would probably work, so I'll want to throw those spare 1 Armor panels onto the partial Action dice, with maybe a spare DT as the last panel. I don't really want to put the Infinity DT on the Delay dice, though.
Looking at the mix, I think I only have a problem because I'm trying to make two working sets. It clearly supports a working set for one player, letting you have 2 creatures with up to 4 Armor each, with two more dice that have 1 Armor on them.
So if that frees up 4 panels, the best place to put them might be to include more 2 count Armor and DT panels.

Shipping update plus some action shots! Some from our very own Gitsplitta . We are getting close!
We are very happy to announce that we are approximately 50% complete with the ModCube packing process! Here is our status
- 195 "First to Ship" packages to all over the world - Shipped! - 25 Misc. Packages - Shipped! - 106 EU packages - Picked up, to be transported to the UK by sea - 61 ROW packages - Packed, filling out customs forms - 325 US packages - Packaging in-progress
So, most of you don't have your hands on your ModCube sets yet, but we are getting very close! We hope to have most of the remaining packages sorted by this weekend, and then over the course of the next two weeks ferry it all to the post office.
Our "first to ship" backers have begun sharing pics of their ModCubes in action, so check out the shots below =)
This last image is actually a screen grab from a video bat rep using the ModCubes! You can see the full battle report, featuring Gitsplitta's AdMech versus Wargamer Shawn's Necrons here:
In our next update at the end of the month, we hope to be able to announce that we have fully shipped all packages for folks who responded to the survey! We'll be chasing up the small number who did not afterwards and trying to get them their rewards, too =). Until next time!
I got mine in Germany today. I am still tinkering with the X-Wing layout. I think I will build a ship status cube (focus, evade,...) and pairs of targeting dice for my ships and the targets.
I've posted some mini-updates in the comments - this past weekend saw us spending the whole two days upgrading the exhaust and air assist systems on the laser cutter, so we're not as far along on the US orders as we'd like, but still hoping to get 1/3 of the remaining US packages (i.e. about 100) out this week.
Also, the EU box of ~100 packages has cleared customs in the UK, so is close to being delivered to our distributor! We ended up shipping it by air to the UK after all (long story!) so those will be getting in the mail to their final destinations soon, hopefully sometime next week
That's great, NTRabbit! Varag, I just checked and yours was a first to ship too (and I recognize the name from packing ) so should be showing up shortly
It was more a case of, if NTRabbit wasn't a first to ship, I'd have to pay the post office a visit and ask them if they've misplaced it. Has happened before for a parcel that was too big for the po box. They wrote a 9 where they should have written a 7 and it sat out the back for a couple of weeks until somebody had a proper look.
Although my wife keeps telling me I should learn to be more patient when waiting for parcels. She just doesn't understand a man's need for a Modcube
