Not too late at all, welcome aboard. If anyone else had the same question, you can enter right up until the final day so long as you provide the relevant pics!
Quick question if I assembled it in January, but started painting it in April could I enter it? Or doesn't it have to of been all assembled, and painted in April alone?

Dont see why not my entry has been assembled and primed for over a year and let me enter him
I just really hope that my amazon order arrives soon, ill be using Vellejo primer for the first time on my Swarmlord (i already stripped the old primer)

Not a problem at all! So long as it hasn't been painted (or is being repainted from scratch) then you could have bought and built the model 20 years ago and it would be fine!
These are the first four of my veteran alpha legion special forces. My story for them is that they were part of an advance party conducting black ops in preparation for the istvaan campaign, and got left behind whilst undercover after the massacre. No longer part of the alpha legions master plan (whatever it may be) and cut off from the imperium, they continue to do the only thing they know, infiltrate other chapters and conduct clandestine ops, fighting for themselves
I'm i pressed with the quality of all the entries so far, it's a really high bar! The alpha legion squad is really cool, the balaclava head and the weathering a spot on.
Aye easy there speed racer. A question ref the photos, are photos with smaller ones inside permitted? Like a main photo with detail shots in smaller frames inside the main photo?
Yeah, that would be fine so long as it's 4 pics (as in actual images) in total.
Also, since you're doing a full 5-man squad, if you really feel you need 5 pics to show each one individually then let me know and it would be fine (that goes for anyone who is doing the full 5 minis, and wants 1 shot per mini!)
lliu wrote: That's a primer?! It looks terrible! Is it the paint or the spray???
It's their paint on stuff. I wanted to try it. I've used paint on primer before. But that was from Reaper. That stuff works great.
This citadel stuff is not too good.
After a little shake... maybe a minute or two... I tried it out... it came on like an ink or wash... totally not a primer. I looked up online and it turns out other folks had the same issue. They had to mix and shake it so much before it was usable. I ended up doing that with a stir stick. I tried another layer and it looked a little better but not as good as the Reaper stuff.
I normally use Rustoleum spray but I don't have any where to spray in the apartment right now. So I thought I'd try the paint on stuff. I should have ordered some Reaper instead of using Citadel's stuff.

It is mainly meant for small touch ups or very small areas.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, I feel like my praetor has been blown out of the water already great job everyone!
Personally I have always used gw spray primer and never had an issue, did you clean the resin before priming? Looks like your issue could be release agent or something similar? Otherwise I'm not sure what has happened there!?
Actually ignore all that, I have since read down and realised that you used paint on primer, never used that before lol!

I'm curious to see how this turns out. I considered entering in my latest Farsight conversion but, given that I've spent the last week trying to adapt and fix only two shoulder pads, I don't think I'd be done in time at this pace!
Haven't had much time for painting this month, but I've got this far to date:
Still having to glue her arms back on every five minutes too, joy of joys
Paradigm, Odin was hit by the full power of N3 fall damage and is awaiting recovery, as I dont feel like helping him right now I would like to change my entry, here is the proof pic:
It's Raven, the leader of the Jailbirds, made by Raging Heroes. She was a freebie for their kickstarter that I pledged on a couple of years ago. She arrived a few weeks back with a few friends
Cracking set you've done there. The tracker is a quality addition
cool. she reminded me of some old escher i have kicking about that i need to paint! haha. thanks. man. the picture quality when i post on here from my laptop is terrible for some reason.. it looks good on my phone haha.. might try and get a collage
program for the laptop
Ooh, there's an idea. I might get some extra ones to proxy as eshers. Ta for the idea!
Quick update:
I'll start on her base tonight, then all I have left to do is cover her in some muck and dust.
If I'd have though about it earlier, I could have tried to covert her into a Willem Defoe platoon style pose. There's another project added to the list

First layer of paint on the Chaplain. I am soooo out of practice. Paint probably could have been thinner. Could have been a lot neater too. Next is a wash, then after that picking out the details.
I probably could use a better setup for pictures too.
For the wip shots I just use my iphone, which seems to work ok. I just stick the figure on the mantelpiece, brace the phone against the edge, switch off the flash and click. I've got a Nikon D40 for taking the final pics.

Fair one.. It bugs me that your photos are better than mine from a phone. Is it possibly my phone camera is too good for such a small scale, is that a thing?.. Its 12 megapixel
Megapixel count is one of the least important things about any camera. There's stuff like aperture and uhh.. yeah i'm not a camera guy but like a lot of electronics, the statistics that matter aren't the ones they throw on the box most of the time.
Most phone cameras are strictly worse than even cheap normal cameras because they can fit better behind the scenes camera parts in the somewhat larger only-cameras. I do believe. Although.. my droid turbo takes pretty good pictures.
You may have to look up a guide for your particular phone, it could be a technique/settings thing too. I know my phone won't focus at all if its too close.

All you really need is plenty of light and a still camera, that's why I brace the phone against the mantelpiece to reduce any blur. I should use a tripod really, but for wip shots I don't think it's worth the bother. I don't think your pics are bad mate, they look great for shots from a phone. There's an article on this site about taking shots with just a phone and a lamp - check it out and see if it's of any help http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Debunking_the_Myths_of_Miniature_Photography
You can also try looking for coloured backgrounds (like mine) there are a lot of them online that you can just download and print for free. I'm also using a daylight bulb. But my set up is far from optimal so thanks for finding that MangoChutney that article is a huge help.
All right, after talking to a friend who's painting skills I greatly respect I made a few tweaks to the praetor, namely more chipping a poster to help break up the base, and some better edge highlighting. So I am calling this one finished and my final pictures.
Well, as it has been a stupidly busy month... I have managed to complete......
A Backpack!
*wild cheers in the background*
WIP piccies for my veteran, I have started on the lava effect for his armour now, and I am happy with how the face on the pack turned out. Gives me hope that I can replicate it on his actual body armour now!
Another update. I thought I'd finished, but looking at the photo there are a few bits to touch up still. Never mind eh? Not sure if I will get around to it though, as I'm sick of having to glue her arms back on every time I touch her with a brush!!
I like what I'm seeing so far! Awesome everybody. My DW knights are almost finished now, just a few touchups and the bases to do (bases will be easy as they won't be very fancy or anything.
Tomorrow I'll be putting the next Subject Poll up, a little earlier in the month than last time so you have more time to plan. So far I've got 'Out of Place' from last month as the Wild Card, and 'Speed' for the Theme. Any suggestions for 'Rank/Role' or 'Style/Techniques'?
For the latter I was thinking '3 colour maximum' might be fun, you're allowed shades/tones but only 3 actually colours on the mini! Or is that too restrictive, possibly?

This month was veteran, so for Rank/Role next month, it might be fun to have rookie/newb.
I think black and white (or greyscale as its sometimes known) would be a good category. Ive always wanted to do a greyscale miniature but never got round to it

Oh well, looks like I am a little behind on this. Stuck with other bits and pieces, real life and so on.
So anyway, I only have some of the base colours down so far. I will be finishing off the base colours tonight with a view to starting the shading (although the foliage on the helmets is going to cause some issues I think).
I am clear for the next 5-6 days so hopefully I should be able to make a bit more progress and get something close to finish for the end of the month.
Rawson wrote: Haha, I spend so much time in the Plog section, I didn't even know this was here!
I'm in. Here are three of my "tall ratlings" squad for my Vostroyan IG army. No wetnoses in the sniper squad, veterans all!
So...uh...had to edit my submission The previous model is really fighting me on getting completed, so I'm switching gears to something else that I'm working on for my Vostroyan Army: two spotters and a shooter for my ratling squad. Should be doable in a week, no?
I'm with Rawson! I can't get inspired to paint Fistgar (how, I don't know... I should be, but I'm not), so I've got something else in the works. I have a proof picture ready but if acceptable I'm just gonna wait to toss it up with the completed photos. I'm not trying to be sneaky and submit something I already have done, I'd just rather focus on finishing the model before I go digging for photos.
Plus its so completely different from fistgar it might be more fun as a surprise
Update to my entry the Veteran Ghost ark. Been busy with school and other problems so haven't been able to work much on it, not sure if I will finish it in time so here is it's current progress.
Spoiler:
Now that it has some paint on it it is coming together a lot more
Thanks. I've been playing necrons for almost two years and I've never done the normal color scheme. It is very different so I'm taking my time so I don't mess it up.
Moving my Battletech mech to the faster theme since they go pretty fast Just realized I am cutting this close!
Here is my new entry, please update my wip.
Also, getting the coat on a medic is a bitch due to cutting that lancer from gears of war to fit the slotta arm under the coat. I'm new to Scions, so... I ruined a backpack in the process thinking it was supposed to go on before the cloak.
@ Zgecko666Made: I like that colour scheme very cool
@TP^DC Deputy ManagerMade : Why didn't you put it up as an article? Cheers anyway, have fun keeping it up to date That name list is going to get very, very long methinks!
With moving and trying to look for some temp work I havent even started this model. So I am sadly going to bow out. Maybe I can enter next month and actually start. Sorry guys.
Some fantastic entry's finished now.

Sick. I want to do some elysian sf operators to go with my alphas. Your middle dude looks like keith jardine. Like the tattoos
I am happy enough with the model, I had to rush a bit at the end as I am on shift now until the end of the month so my painting time was up! For this reason it isn't quite where I wanted it to be, but I'm still pretty happy with the results.
So enjoy my Aspiring Chaos Champion, a bloke who is obviously sans-marbles, painted as one of Hakanor's Reavers.
I have completely dropped the ball on this one. School has been verily kicking my butt. I have a break this week though so I'm going to try to finish it up!
Ok, confession: I was painting Death Company anyhow, and figured since they have all been gripped by the Black Rage, they must be veterans, right? And for those who had better things to do than take dead languages in high school, Vetust is Latin for Veteran
Paradigm: Thank you for doing something fun & positive!
Thanks for all of the complements guys! I have made one slight modification to the model, in that the base edge is now painted in Stormvermin Fur as it was meant to be originally. Due to me heading out to go on shift I forgot to paint it over the base coat. If I get chance to take another photo I will, but for me it is now bed time! (got to love night shifts).
Talys, love the Death Company Vet. I really like the way you paint your black armour, it really catches the eye without being over done.
Its making me look forward to painting my Ravenwing now!
Well I fear I may not get the FW ork boss on bike completed this month! :(
Ordered something off ebay that never turned up so had to wait till I could claim and reorder from elsewhere and need to spend as much time clearing the house while I have access to a skip.
It is almost done however so at the very least I'll get pics up and who knows a few long morning painting sessions may see it finished except for the base, I need to pop to town for some bits.
Some really impressive entries this month, cant wait to see the final pictures thread!
Well, I am officially declaring my Deathwing Knights finished. Had lots of fun painting them and learned a few things too. Here are my pics:
As usual, the photos do not do them any justice at all. I am hoping to acquire a proper digital camera for taking photos of my minis soon, the one on my iPod Touch 4 is just not getting the job done since it has virtually no way to adjust it.
Thanks to Paradigm for having this contest! I don't expect to win or indeed even get any votes, but it inspired me to spend the time to paint these guys and try a few new techniques. I even used some Mordheim turf on the bases for the very first time and I like the results! I looked at them next to the previously painted Knight Master and they make him look like crap! If I can make all my minis look this good from now on I'll be a very happy man! Here's to an even better contest next month (though I'm still torn on what I should paint for it...)!
I totally agree with you. This kind of contest is great to improve oneselves skills. I don't care about winning or even get a vote for my entry, too. But it was such a hell of a fun to take part and see all these great entries.
I've got a bad case of distracting myself, apart from the base concrete, not one area is finished.
I'm happy with the base colour for the gold though.
Also, checking ref for this, I was surprised by how pale Minty actually is, I was expecting to need to paint a weathered skintone but he's a peaky fella.
This has definitely been a great competition. I had a lot of fun painting up my entry and looking at what everyone else has put out there this month is really exciting.
I'm looking forward to seeing the voting and getting ready for next months theme.
Almost done, finished the base this morning. I still need to do one more detail pass but < 1hr of painting remains. Then dip. Then seal. I may have to post up the undipped version for the contest as I may not have time to let everything cure by the 30th unless I get it done tonight which is questionable.
@Grim: have you considered just using an all-over wash if you don't have time to dip? It would have the same effect really, and dry much faster. It would need sealing after, but if you were doing that anyway then there's nothing to lose!
I'm rather impressed with myself for polishing off that Terminator as quick as I did lol. Might have to base him though since looking at him, I'm not entirely satisfied with the "hands on" pic.
A WIP in case disaster strikes and I can't get it all done:
Spoiler:
Well. I am starting late, but will likely get at least my Chapter Champion finished ready for the end of the 30th for the paining competition. So far legs finished:
Torso needs highlighting and red wash to loin cloth, sword handle and white wings on shoulder pad painting, purity sealed and dark angels logo on shield and gold breast plate highlighted with white, gloss varnish to eyes and then glue together before varnishing:
It's achievable, but had really hoped to get the whole squad completed. Need to tone down my expectations prior to these challenges I think.
I'm a big fan of dipping with Tudor, besides the protection it usually turns out better for me than dips in a lot of cases. I'm gonna need to use a huge brush anyway.
Well, it was a quick turnaround and I managed to complete Brother Geminiel. His base was a complete mess-up - I forgot to order more of the resin bases from Tiny Worlds that I've started using!! So he's temporarily on that base until I get round to ordering the right bases. Once he's had a spray varnish he's done. I know he won't win the contest, he's nowhere near good enough, but I'm proud of him - he has a history, a personality and he looks good. I've learnt I need to try and work on my highlighting, but I love the red robes and am really pleased about how they came out. He'll take pride of place in my display. I will try and finish one more tomorrow so I can submit the two together, but otherwise he will be entered as a single miniature.
Will post tomorrow if this is final entry and an amended proof

'dipping with tudor'.......?? What's this magic you're talking of??!!!
Automatically Appended Next Post: @TP - loving him. The red robes came out lushly (that's a word o.O ) and really like the burnished gold pauldron. Nice job fella. The super dark green scheme you use for your DAs works so much bettter than the usual Christmas tree green assoc with them. Much prefer that dark dark look. Aces

That's a pretty good looking Dark Angel, dude! As a DA fan myself, I am impressed. Like you, I paint mine in the dark green rather than the lighter green I've seen in a lot of pictures (they are the DARK Angels after all ). That one almost looks like one of mine except its painted better. Now I have something to strive towards! Kudos, man!
Ending tonight at midnight, but just like last month I'll hold off compiling the voting thread until about lunchtime tomorrow, so if you need a few hours extra to sneak in under the radar then that's cool!
Managed it anyway. As to what I was talking about, instead of army painter, I use minwax polyshades--specifically the Tudor color-- to do my dipping. On top of the super-wash effect, you get the poly part of polyshades which serves as an extra durable top coat. Just tend to have to matte seal after to take out the shine. For almost anything I'm capable of painting, dipping with Tudor is my go to finishing method. Think of it as a dirty black wash plus.
See below for my WIP photo, he's basically done, just have to decide if I'm gonna bother matte sealing (slimy almost works in this case, no?), as well as uploading 4 daylight photos and the proof pic.
I haven't got a proper name yet, but what is more of a veteran than a hundreds of years old dragon? And what's more terrifying than a dragon? Did I hear mind flayers? Soo... You'd really be scared of a... What... An illithidragon then? I think skinny cthulhu also applies. I also intend to use him as the leader of my green gribblies faction of roving alien pirates/marauders. I mean, tentacles totally sell it as a space dragon right?
Thanks Some days you just don't feel like painting a space marine, even if he has massive power fists. Sometimes, it's gotta be a space dragon pirate king.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Well. Off to start my shift which ends at midnight I was doing well too on two of my other squad members. We'd best call Geminiel my finished piece. I will be staying up when I get home to finish the other two, but won't expect them to be included as my entry. I'll be finishing them for me - that's what I love about this contest. Here's my fluff for Geminiel:
Brother Geminiel is a hardened warrior fighting for the The Emperor with a fury and vigour surpassed by none.
He came to the attention of the Inner Circle after his performance in the Cleansing of Durganion XIII when he supported Bethor in his efforts to reclaim the third company's standard from the vile genestealers who dared to take it.
Geminiel would not relent in the face of the slathering horde and stood fast as Bethor advanced and took back the standard and with it the company's honour. He single-handedly slayed wave after wave of the xenos and with walls of their carcasses surrounding him he continued to hold fast adding body after body to those that rotted around him creating a near overwhelming stench.
But alas, although Geminiel's strength of conviction made him endure it was not enough to prevent those filthy Tyranid scum from edging closer and closer until they started laying their blood stained claws upon him. They overwhelmed him and ripped his legs from his body, but still he fought, beating every one away that he could. By the grace of the Emperor, reinforcements reached his position to assist and were able to push the genestealer tidal wave back to the hell from whence it came in time for Brother Psilous, Company Apothecary, to stabilise him.
He was returned to The Rock at Geminiel's request so that the Master of The Rock would be able to work with Brother Psilous to augment Brother Geminiel with hand-crafted bionic legs blessed by the Machine Gods to allow him to continue his fight in the name of the Emperor and for his beloved Chapter in his newly granted position of Company Champion.
Wasn't able to base, unfortunately. Silly exams ruining all my free time. But I'd like these to go as my entry..
I havn't posted anything here this past month (except the proof pic), but I have kept up to date with everything. Some fine entries in the mix this month.
Not happy with him at all but I didn't leave myself enough time so rushed it. Lesson learnt for next month!! Anyway, here he is, my Sternguard Veteran for my Salamanders:
Here, a whopping (frankly astonishing) TWO hours before the deadline, is my finished entry:
I have to say I never usually have any cause to doubt Dakka's 'auto-correct' when I'm uploading pictures but it seems to have made them all a tad darker than they were originally.
Anyway, good luck everyone, and congrats on some superb paint jobs!
Here are my 4 photos for the entry. The color is a bit off, but unless I can snag some daylight shots in the morning, this will be what I'm going with:
I'm going to drop this here and then edit this post so I make it in before the deadline.
EDIT: This is my final submission of Commissar McDuff.
I painted up this Commissar in honor of my first hamster, McDuff. When I originally adopted him, I had no idea that so much sass could be packed into such a small creature.
McDuff is painted with the logic of the 40k universe that the fancier you are, the more important you must be. He must be a battle-hardened veteran, otherwise they wouldn't let him dress this good!
(I just noticed his coat is chipped! I will try and fix it and upload a new image.)
Extra pictures are spoilered.
Spoiler:
In case anyone wants to see the greenstuff work, this is what the hamster looked like before priming:
I tried to capture the death stares that McDuff gave me when I first got him. (I don't think his little face could move like that, but I swear that was the kind of look he would give me if it could!)
I thought the Veteran theme was perfect to do a figure in McDuff's honor because he was always a fighter. He came to the shelter in a cage with two other hamsters. Syrian hamsters (the kind you see on Youtube eating burritos) are solitary creatures, and will fight to the death for control of their territory (in this case the cage). McDuff's former owner had unintentionally set up a hamster death arena, and McDuff managed to make it out alive, but barely. A worker at the shelter told me that his entire back was covered in scabs form the other hamsters' attacks. His fur grew back, but he was always a little scruffy looking. I had trouble petting him when I first got him because he was so defensive from his time with the other hamsters. But after time and lots of treats we became best buds.
He eventually got sick and died the next day from what was probably a respiratory infection. He gave me and the vet plenty of hell the day before he died, though. He tore up the Q-tip I used to try and clean his crusty eyes and tried to bite the vet's scope.
Epic fail to finish the other two minis. Got back at 1am and after setting up paint station, painted one pipe then started falling asleep while sat up! Therefore Geminiel is my final piece. I'll finish the others soon.
Sadly I do not have a decent photo booth to take better pictures, so here it is. I have done some additional work past this point, but this will have to suffice:
Ok, basing will have to happen later, once I do a bit of magnetizing, since right now I have no way to store my toxicrene. Also, I'm not going to glue down the tentacles just yet. I haven't had a chance to build a lightbox either, so here's the best I can do with moving some light around and my phone.

I'm in love. It's going to be so fething hard to choose who to vote for.
I will try and retake these with new varnish before the voting thread goes up, as something has gone wrong with the Army Painter varnish (despite shaking, it's made everything glossy and sticky - I think you can see). But being that it's due and I rather fancy not staring at a Judge's tiny blue arse much longer (probably a crime), this is my final entry v1.0
Had an absolute blast with this little guy, I had to re-watch the film of course! I apologise if the green is in some way intrinsically wrong/offensive to the senses, I'm not trying to be artistic, I'm quite colourblind. My partner went to bed so after that I have no idea whether this is neon, grimy or what.
I had a blast converting these guys to match the style of the stock Vostroyan snipers (packs, long barreled las for the shooter, lack of the traditional hat, etc...)

Which version did you watch? Karl Urban's or Sly Stallone's?

"Damnation!" snarled the Khornate, shaking violently in his safety harness. He'd been cursing ever since they had left the cruiser, and the frequency of his ramblings had only increased now that their drop-pod was taking its sweet time to reach the surface.
On the opposite side of the drop-pod, the Tzeentchian, the de-facto squad leader, said nothing. Not because he didn't want to (not that saying anything to the Khornate had any effect whatsoever), but because he was equally clueless about the drop-pod's sudden slowness. He looked to the other squadmembers (or 'burdens', as he affectionally called them), as if they had any answers.
The Nurglite sat motionless in his harness, his autocannon firmly clenched in his right hand. There was an odd sound coming from him, barely audible over the sound of the drop-pod's noisy descent. It took him a while to realize the Nurglite was humming. Happily so, even.
Slightly perplexed, the Tzeentchian looked at the other two members of his squad, the Word Bearer and the Slaaneshi. The latter was stroking his flamer with his tentacle while mumbling something about liquids best not described, while the former was... smiling.
If there was anything he'd learned in his time with the Remnants, it was that a happy Word Bearer was very, very bad news.
"Say, where did you say this...'artefact' was?" he asked, eyes fixed on the Word Bearer.
"Oh, it should be somewhere around here", the Word Bearer replied, his grin growing slightly wider.
"Here? But we're still in space. We haven't even reached the atmosphere yet. What do you mean 'here'?"
"Oh, about that.... "
Before the Tzeentchian could ask, a miniature Warp hole appeared straight in their trajectory, sucking them in. The drop pod shook violently, the outside armour plating creaking and groaning as if assaulted from beyond.
"...we just have to do a little detour to this Daemon world."
It is said their arrival on the daemon-infested planet was heralded by the elongated scream of four Terminators, amplified by the cackling laughter of a fifth.
....so yeah, that's why I couldn't finish my entry
Rambling aside, this month just straight-up murdered my free time, so I wasn't able to finish my entry in time. Kind of a shame, really, I really wanted some feedback on these guys...
It all began on the planet of Lothern V, with the death of about 12 million people....
...I'm starting to think I have a bit of an obsession with writing fluff for everything.
Anyway, I wouldn't want to hijack this thread with my ramblings, I have a Chaos blog for that And perhaps I should follow my own rule of 'paint first, write fluff later' a bit more, seeing as I didn't manage to finish my Chaos Terminators this time
