Welcome to April's Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge. For those who aren't familliar, this is a no-prize-related challenge open to any and all painters and hobbyists. Anyone can enter, from a newcomer to the hobby with your first box of minis to a multiple-time Golden Demon champion, and the winner each month will be decided by community poll, not just on the paintwork but on the effort, creativity and awesomeness of the finished piece!
For this month, the theme is: Veteran
Your entry should be a miniature/miniatures that are distinguishable as Veterans in their respective settings. These can be from any game, manufacturer or setting, and can, and may be converted as much as you like. To give you an idea of the scope this can cover, all the examples below would be perfectly elligible for entry:
- Any model with the word 'Veteran' in its name or rank
- A model wearing or receiving honours, medals or the like
- A model that is weathered to reflect an extended conflict
- A model with some kind of wound, trophy or item from a previous battle
As this theme can cover many things, you may submit up to 4 lines of background if you wish, to lend context to your choice of mini. This will be displayed alongside the images in the voting thread.
How To Enter - You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it. This could be unassembled, primed or even basecoated, so long as we can see where you are starting from. Entries that do not submit a Proof Picture will not be elligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 4 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. If you do not finish in time, the single most recent WIP picture may be submitted.
So What Do I Win? - Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month Following the vote, points will be awarded for the following:
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have? This challenge begins Wednesday 1st April and will end at midnight GMT on the 30th April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.
Voting Guidelines
When voting, consider the following as well as the quality of the paintwork:
- The creativity and originality of the entry
- The overall composition of the piece, such as basing, conversion and coherency between the models
- The relevance of the entry to the theme
- The effort the painter has put into the entry
The first challenge was an exceptional showcase of talent and motivation, let's make this one even better! Lights out, and away we go!

Atticus and Menos are Terran bounty hunters. Originally officers from a local hive enforcement precinct they quickly became aware of the additional earning potential by performing 'odd jobs' for the local gang leaders. The pair started to become known for their skills and as demand for them increased, the risks started to rise rapidly. The decision was made, they sourced themselves counterfeit indents and joined the local bounty guild taking to the stars trading their skills for Throne Geld.

I painted up this Commissar in honor of my first hamster, McDuff. When I originally adopted him, I had no idea that so much sass could be packed into such a small creature.
McDuff is painted with the logic of the 40k universe that the fancier you are, the more important you must be. He must be a battle-hardened veteran, otherwise they wouldn't let him dress this good!
(I just noticed his coat is chipped! I will try and fix it and upload a new image.)
Gonna go with a single more-or-less infantry sized model this time, likely, Chapter Master Fistius Fistgar. Haven't sorted a chapter yet, but it'll come. Will probably match the dreadnought.
Well, as I can't decide I'm going to ask what does the people prefer, tall knight on the left, Ugluk nearly-as-badass-as-Lurtz in the center or Dai-Katana Samurai on the right.
I am entering my Dusk Raider praetor, Praetor Hengist.

I'm in Thinking am gonna do something with my new solitaire for this. Have a cracking idea for a scene but need a daemonette or two....balls. Need to figure something else for him to kill Will pop up a proof-pic after work
Here's some proof pics of my 4 regular Deathwing Knights (as I have said before, the Knight Master is already painted (badly) so he won't be joining these guys for this challenge):
Sorry about crappy photos, I just snapped them earlier today with my iPod Touch since I don't have a better camera available. I'm a modeler/gamer, not a photographer!
Hey I'm in. I've not got the pets yet thought the mail to be able to post a proof pic, but will do as soon as I have them.
I'm entering (at least) 3 members of a Dark Angels command squad to accompany Azrael, Grand Master of the chapter. It will include a Company Champion and if I get time I'll paint an old metal Apothecary I have (I'll have to work out how to make him look like a Veteran) and Brother Bethor the standard bearer (but really wanted to paint this guy up to have the banner swappable so I can field him with all of the sacred standards or chapter standard etc (this will require thinking about)).

Vrosh Tattersoul, Aspiring Chaos Champion. I am probably going to remove the dagger from his off hand and have him carry a severed head (an old High Elf head, but you cant see the stupid pointy ears), representing his vicious blood thirst and missing marbles.
I still haven't decided on a fluff friendly paint scheme or not though. Damn fluff!
Well I didn't even take a day off from finishing the last challenge before I started on this months!
No pic tonight, I'll upload one tomorrow. This month I'll be painting up something that I haven't painted before - 40k orks. In particular the FW Ork Nob on bike with a custom head as I lost the original Be interesting to see how it comes out as I've painted nothing but BA for nearly 20 years so red I can do, green...... we'll have to see how it goes I guess.
Might do an Ork myself this month; I couldn't ever do an army of the buggers, but I've done a couple of rather nice one-off display Orks over the years, so I may try and replicate that....
Here is my entry. A Space Marine Chaplain in Terminator Armor. I am still trying to figure out what I plan to do with the base. But tonight was just opening the puppy up.
I'm genuinely undecided between three figures.
I've got good ol' Badrukk who's so pants-on-head insane that he is obviously a veteran, middle guy that probably got up to something, and Judge Minty.
(If I went with Badrukk I'd restart, apparently that is not actually green)
Leaning towards Minty or Kap'n, as Ciaphas is so fine featured that looking at his boots makes my bristles retract...
Na! You gotta go with Princess Celestius, she fought that black one who I think was her sister
Buttery Commissar wrote:I'm genuinely undecided between three figures.

Judge Minty, looks like a cool pose and would love to see a non-GW figure in the competition

Have you genuinely converted rainbow dash to become an alicorn (my daughter has made me watch way too much My Little Pony)?!! I can't work out if that's cool or crazy

So much Minty love! that's settled, then. I'll enter with Judge Minty, but I will try and find my metal copy tomorrow, as I just like metal things better.
Base and sign will be the same, and I miiiight drop the villains in.

Oh goodness no. Part of my job - I import a lot of things from China to sell at conventions (generic plush creatures, blankets, fabrics, etc) and this turned up at some point in 2014 with a bunch of stuffed animals. usually they send really confusing spice packets and face-cloths, so it was a bit of a change.
It's 100% stamped as Hasbro and all that, and an actual toy, but I suspect it's an bootleg.

Any thoughts or prefs on what fits best?
Judge Minty is my vote, but I'm completely biased to that character
You can count me in this month, I'm going to have proof tomorrow
Don't have any pictures yet, but I been wanting to add a Liberian Dreadnought to my collection. Thinking of running him as a "counts as Ironclad if I have to.
Well seeing as my model isn't built yet I figured I would post a picture of the parts I will be using to build this model, I don't even know how it is going to turn out. I will post updates as it rises from the scrap yard. LOL. Enjoy.
I want to do red, But I have no idea how to highlight it. I use a lighter red and it doesnt show up, too light and its pink and it looks funny. Will orange be better? Or shall I go for kahki as I know I can highlight that?
Thinking about the commando from battletech (the axe is just hanging there so I don't lose it until I can pin it,) but the Captain/CM and the Deathwatch vet would be cool to do too.
Here is, what will be, my entry for this months contest.
5 off Veteran Grenadiers, armed with assault rifles. Some are in standard uniform others are wearing the camouflage tents they carried on their backs.
By the way, I have previously painted 5 of these for the campaign I am in. If you want a photo of them I can supply one (wasn't happy with their faces in the end so they wouldn't be what I want to enter anyway).
I'll be trying again since my paint mojo is back.
Torn between my Contemptor Dreadnought (Doesn't really get more veteran than that) or Brother Claudio from Space Hulk
My original idea was to paint a chaplain to go alongside my death company or a unit of Sanguinary Guard, but the USPS has temporarily misplaced my package.
I might need to switch over and paint Lysander since his clampack is hanging out in my art box already. Painting yellow though... ugh.
It's only open for 3 days so I get time to make the model. More details over there, but basically know it's my decision, but wondered what wider opinion was.
Head is almost done, when it is I shall put a pic up to show what I'm going for and feedback. It was going to be a test head but I'm liking it and has more character and veteran feel to it more than the head I originally picked.
@Para, sadly, the horse-thing was confiscated by my daughter and I'll be going back with my original Idea, pics will show up once I've sorted out all of the bits I'll use.
Had to do something for the first, but too tired for much effort.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Has the poll for the first challenge gone up yet?
Ponies are the illegitiment step children of Chaos Space Marines and Orks.
@ para-
nothing yet, will begin work on him tonight, trying to research whether or not I can put a unit on a larger base then it was intended without an in game penalty...
@Grim: what have you done? Must admit the name had me expecting a Calgary conversion!
@Stormwall: I vote for what I assume is the CM, the Greek looking guy.
@Buttery Commissar: where is that Cain from? He's awesome!
Honestly, I am worried I won't do him justice. I think I may go with the commando mech or sgt "Why did you burn my arm off and give me a powersword," mcgee.
I got the first batch of my raging heroes minis through last week, so I'll be painting one of them up for this. On hols for the time being, and I forgot to bring them with me, so it will be several days before I can post a proof pic
Part of the reason I’m entering into this contest is to help push myself forward as a painter. So I’m going to try a spot of weathering I’ve not done before. After all, one of the criteria for this month can be "- A model that is weathered to reflect an extended conflict “ So I’ve decided to heat stress the guns.
Still a WIP, but I like the way it’s headed.
Lots of nice start pictures out there, looking forward to seeing some paint!
Paradigm, I got an SM attack bike today. I plan to do some kit-bashing on it. (Specifically, the shoulder pads-I have a lot from other kits.)
Would that qualify as a good entry?
Alright, I have to admit that I have changed my mind again on my entry. I am a newish painter and I don't want to have a project too big for me get overwhelmed with and not finish.
Garviel loken kitbash/ conversion . Modified chaos armor to look preheresy. Think he looks close to the artwork. Time to paint! Other characters/ veterans to come too!
Da_Mekanik wrote: Alright, I have to admit that I have changed my mind again on my entry. I am a newish painter and I don't want to have a project too big for me get overwhelmed with and not finish.
First off welcome to DakkaDakka.
Just pick a model that looks interesting and have fun with it. Don't worry about winning or placing. Use it as a tool to stretch your skills.
Okidokey.. let's try this dance again. Here's my entry for this month. Brother Claudio from Space Hulk primed black and base coated with Mephiston Red.
Great looking entries so far!
@para: There is a broken image link under 'kencotter's' spoiler tag (last but one from the bottom). You should probably fix it
So, as I'm building my Imperial Fists, I wondered what I could get this month to use as a Veteran. But then I decided against it. Looking at my WoC collection, I have lots of characters that are unpainted - so I chose one of them.
Enter, Zavax, Champion of a Hundred Battles, and Battle Standard Bearer to my Army. He hits the table every time I play, so I figured it was time to repair his banner and give him some paint.
I primed him, and jumped right into basing and basing the flesh before I remembered to take a picture:
Fistius Fistgar, next to the company champion from his honor guard.
I plan to paint Fistgar, his honor guard will come later.
He's just crudely bluetacked together and will need some tweaks on his pose (backpack and cape especially) but I've sorted out the primary bits. He'll be needing some extra gubbins like the dreadnought got before it was over.

that right there is one lovely fig. cant wait to see the bugger all painty painty!
you using an ipad to take the pics? I use mine for wip shots and found if i shoot portrait.....stupid sideways things happens. Shoot landscape and they come up normal way up
One of the first ghost arks to be activated from one of the first awakening Tomb Worlds. After countless battles it resorts to cannibalizing the gathered remnants of the warriors it is charged with repairing to keep the Silent King's decree to reclaim the Necron's empire at all cost. The implacable Necron legions are rising. Their number is legion, their name is death.

Love the fluff and love the model more, excited to see it painted.

WIP here too, or link to your blog

Well, he is Chaos and has a terminator armour, don't they have to kill the guy that was inside it before them without breaking the armour? that sounds pretty veteran to me.
aldo wrote: Well, he is Chaos and has a terminator armour, don't they have to kill the guy that was inside it before them without breaking the armour? that sounds pretty veteran to me.
And the gods don't gift tentacles to noobs so...
I'd imagine Tzeentch doing that for the lolz though, going like: Hmmm, well aren't you a useless little Guardsman? I know, let's give you some flamer sacks here and there and we'll see how that goes, followed by scenes worthy of a Mister Bean movie, only with more horrific casualties
Not the best picture, I know, my camera is missing right now, but I have my proof. Working on an aspiring sorcerer from the black legion, built him today, happy with how he came out. Might make some rubric marines for him too
I see I am not the only one doing a Mechanicus aligned knight... Mine will be a Magaera conversion, an ancient relic of 10,000 wars... Here is the first pic and proof, it is the Lightening Cannon.
Hello everyone, here are my proof pictures Grand Master of the Dark Angels - Azrael's Command Squad:
Brother Bethor is around, but he needs quite a bit of conversion and therefore I'm going to post his proof later if he is to be included.
I've named them all for key people who have guided me and been an essential member and have an idea of bits of fluff for them. I've never written fluff before, feels a bit weird. Do we post that at the end?
Melcavuk wrote: Not the greatest WiP but my Veteran entry for the month. "Machina Liberatus" Mechanicum aligned Imperial Knight with open crew compartment
Now that brings back memories... Back when the kit first came out I did a similar conversion, as far as I can tell it was one of the first attempts at a knight cockpit, its so cool to see the idea taken farther and tackled with greater skill then I possessed at the time.
Paradigm wrote: He's looking great! Love the subdued tone of the jacket! What's that hanging from his left hand?
hheehheee - you'll have to wait and see
I don't like the way the hand is postioned usually so I lopped the buggery off and re-set it. There's a reason behind the maddness though
Taunting us hey! Hmmm, what could it be? Is it a Veteran's Day special edition Latte from the Mymeara branch of Starbucks? You know attacking and destroying infidels is thirsty work.
hahahahaaaaa - not quite.... nothing super spectacular, just a wee something extra. The way the fig's hand is usually set bothers me....just makes me hearing 'Stop!! In the name of loooooove" everytime I see it. So I wanted to change it up a bit. Less of The Supremes and more cold, aloof killer.
Odin Goldsmith is doing well, the armour needs one or twi rounds of highlights and then battle damage and gore, any idea on his weapon? should I do a glowing magic thing or go with a real weapon and use iron or steel or something?
Finally settled on my own entry, a trio of Veterans of the Long War.
First we have pure CC fighter, big sword and several rather nasty knives. Not much conversion work here, more of a kitbash really.
Next a HB carrier. I've up-armoured his shoulder pad, just plasticard there, and added extra ammo on his backpack. There's also a bit of chaos demon/armour fusion going on, which I may add more of before I paint him.
And lastly, an all-rounder, probably a Chaos Lord of some kind. I've actually used a spare Malifaux had on him, so it's tiny compared to normal CSM heads, but to me manages to get the look of true scale, without all the fuss of chopping and changing sizes/parts around. I don't know if anyone sells heads in this scale, but it would be a decent way of converting truescale Marines without too much bother. Somewhat ironically, this guy is on the same base as last month's entry!
I thought about dusting off some ancient lump of lead myself, but the dread just called to me. If I finish it early in the month, I might put some paint on an old RT captain as well.
Paradigm wrote: So you didn't fancy doing a Baneblade in a month? Can't say I blame you!
I was just afraid I couldn't do it justice with that kind of schedule. Especially since the wife and I are going on vacation for 5 days at the end of the month. I doubt she would want me to bring it along. The sentinel should still give me a good challenge.
Looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with this month.
I'd like to join in on this but you guys put my painting skills to shame. It would definitely give me that kick in the pants I need to start painting all of the minis I have and not painting. LOL. Good luck everyone. I cant wait to see what all of your stuff looks like when done.

i have never been a fan of the head, so i will be switching it up...
he'll get the bionic head from the Devastator box, and a cool little mohawk, like his art...

You convinced me! Ive never even finished completely painting a miniature yet. Just been collecting and experimenting for a month now. As for the rules: The rules call for a VETERAN UNIT. Im not sure if I have one. I have the SM Command Squad. Is there a Veteran in that model set? Also dont expect a wicked diorama or anything from me! LMAO.
Oh Lord Almighty. I didnt see what some of you already had posted before I decided to throw my hat in the ring. Im seeing some really great looking minis. Im gonna have my arse handed to me literally considering Im only a whole month into the painting and hobby part of this game. I havent even completed a single paint job on a Tactical Soldier. LOL. Im still in it as long as you guys dont laugh me out of the place though. Also how are you guys posting pictures in the forum showing your work? I can upload to my gallery but I cant post in a thread. Can you help? Thanks and good luck everyone!

You'll be fine! Frankly, it's just as much an achievement to paint your first mini as it is to produce something amazing! Even the best painters started somewhere, after all, and if this challenge gets you inspired and motivated to start painting then that's what it's all about!
Also how are you guys posting pictures in the forum showing your work? I can upload to my gallery but I cant post in a thread. Can you help? Thanks and good luck everyone!
Once you have them in the gallery, look on the lower left of the page you'll see a list of URLs with different names above them. Copy and paste the one that says 'forums' into your post, and the image will appear.
I havent even been able to work on my SM Command Squad much today. Stupid virus on my computer is trying to wipe all my files out so Ive been trying to fix this stupid thing. Almost a year and 3 Terrabytes of stuff simply gone... Came in and it was just deleting things on its own. Plus my Pay Pal was hacked not once but TWICE in 2 days. Been a bad run of luck for this ole boy for sure.
Just a quick progress update: Got some of the base colors down on my Deathwing Knights, but they're not ready for a photo op yet! Once I finish the base colors I will shoot some pics for you guys. I will mention that I am finally doing what most of you would consider basic: thinning my paints and painting multiple coats instead of trying to get it done with a single coat of paint. It is making a huge difference already, the bone white deathwing armor turned out awesome! More updates to come, so stay tuned!
P.S. I love what I'm seeing from all of you so far, awesome looking stuff!
I have a question guys. Im working on the SM Command Squad for this contest and all of the weapons have handles on them and all of the arms that are supposed to hold them have the fist clenched. My question is this: Do I cut the handles off of the weapons and glue them to the hand? I just want to make sure here so I dont ruin my model.

I think that is the only option; it ends up looking ok in the end.
yup. carefully take a sharp craft knife and cut back under the body of the gun so the handle comes off then use plastic cement to glue on. think they made it like that so you could glue the gun maglocked to his backpack instead if you wanted to
here is my entry although his powerfist arm may change if i get the bits im waiting on this week its a truescale chaos lord in power armour and also his two servoskull/ wound markers

Spoiler:
That is really cool (and I don't say that just because my entry is an almost-true scale Chaos Lord as well! ). Any ideas on colour scheme yet?
oohhh - just thought of a possible theme for the vote for next month's comp. Too early? nah!! Gonna pop it here while I remember. 'Faster, faster....GO FASTER!!!' Speed theme - anything that shows speed and the wish to go faster!!! Could be bikes, ork on a rocket, grot being chased by a giant squig etc etc. Anyways there m'suggestion. Back to the Solitaire
I like your almost finished entry, para. That blood... So good
As for my entry, I think I might change it from my BSB, to some Terminators I found in the closet. Not only do I want to paint something towards my Imperial Fists, but the BSB hand/arm keeps popping off :( I've had to repair it twice in the past few days...

Awesome idea. I second the motion for GO FASTER! I've got some Ravenwing bikes and a Nephilim fighter to paint.
Haven't done much for my entry yet, did a quick colour test on a test SM:

I'll have to train my squiggly line painting skills a bit, but I think I should be able to pull off a reasonable job on the Termie Got my bits orders in today too, which contained a couple more mutant arms and the like.... maybe my Slaaneshi Terminator won't be alone for too long
Also, seeing the other entries in the competition, I have a sinking feeling I won't be getting any votes this time around either
That is really cool (and I don't say that just because my entry is an almost-true scale Chaos Lord as well! ). Any ideas on colour scheme yet?
chaos lord off im thinking a sort of homage to pre-heresy death guard with an off white or bone armor and a rusty trim im not to sure on the cloak yet though either dark green or a skin tone i am gonna use that new martian ironearth for the base

Are you familiar with The Cleaved?
Nurgley Death Guard offshoot (I think), they'd fit that look you want for sure!
I'll join in! I found this WarWalker and a twin pretty cheap on Bartertown, in bad shape, and I'm re-working them as part of a tutorial on turning cheap junk models into something you'd be proud to show off. I figure veteran models have plenty of dings and wounds to help hide the issues the model has.
This is after stripping the caked-on red paint and cleaning all the mold lines the original owner ignored. Here's some shots in pieces and whet I think the final pose will look like.

idk been feeling a bit unmotivated this month,
anyway is a crossover between a warrior and a flayed one a bad idea? maybe as a crypnotech experiment? this is one of the ideas im playing around with...
Didn't have a whole lot of time to paint between school and the gym but I got the final layer down on the Hengist's terminator armor for the storm grey look
Januine wrote: oohhh - just thought of a possible theme for the vote for next month's comp. Too early?
Awesome idea. I second the motion for GO FASTER! I've got some Ravenwing bikes and a Nephilim fighter to paint.
I could go with this idea. I, too, have some Ravenwing that need some paint (I'm super slow at painting bikes, but maybe I could do my 3 black knights. Already partly painted my nephy, though.

That is a fun model to paint. I did one for my Dark Angels, and I'm thinking about going back and touching him up a bit! I'd love to see how yours turns out!
Update on my entry. So far all I have gotten done is having the models assembled and the arms magnatized. Im hoping to feel better tomorrow so I can prime them and at least base coat them. Also I cant find any Mephiston Red anywhere as its on backorder. Im hoping like crazy the local Comics shop has some. Ive got two models coming in this week and I really need two pots.

P3 Skorne Red is a really good substitute if its available to you.
I have tried using a wet palette (Love it, just cant wait for my new brushes and soap to get here).
And bought a WW for my DA army. I have invented new swear words after putting my tracks on a piece the wrong way around.... *sigh*.
Quick pic of my colour scheme for you (sort of).
Spoiler:
Just for the background, I was thinking about the challenge of painting a "Veteran" while I was browsing through my DA Codex and was struck by a little inspiration. The original DA armour was black, so I thought about keeping a set of black armour, and painting a nice lava scheme on there to intimate one of the fallen who has quite literally been to hell and back. Don't read too much into the quality of the lava, as it is only a test and I still have a few hurdles to overcome yet (such as actually sticking my model together and undercoating!). However my newfound love of the wet palette will make life a lot easier for painting a more blended lava scheme.
*Edit* Oh, and I think that when I finish up my Dark Vengance CSM's, I think that it will look pretty awesome on a Hellbrute!
See kids, this is why you don't go around talking about Heresy everywhere. Now who wants some more tentacles?
<Vaporizes Ezra Tyrius with incandescent plasma>
Chaos is bad, M’kay?
A little progress:
Finished the plasma cannon arm. Right now another one of my dreadnoughts is borrowing it for the photo. The heat-stress doesn’t show up that well in this pic, hopefully I can get better results in the final shots.

If you're going to murder me with a Dreadnought, at least give me a Dreadnought quote as a parting gift
Something like LET THE PROMETHIUM BURN!
Plasma cannon's looking pretty cool by the way, is it a kitbash? I can't for the life of me remember plasma cannons for Dreadnoughts being available in the regular kit

Sorry, today is not a very witty day. I’ll try to think of something pithy next time you mutate.
The PC is from the venerable dreadnought kit. I did kitbash a MM arm, which might show up in this competition, time allowing.
Both the basic and the Ven dread kits come with AsCs, TLLCs, and powerfists. The ven kit gives you the PC, while the regular kit gets you the ML arm. If you want the other options you need to either kitbash or look elsewhere.
Well, since there are only two models I can think of that are really veterans for Tyranids (and neither one is going into my army), I'm going to just enter another hamster. This time it's a Commissar.
Spoiler:
Proof
I never realized how small humans are compared to Tyranids until I started on this model. I'm a little afraid to paint some of the details.
OneManNoodles wrote: @ Garrior: Nice to see some Harkanor's Reavers for a change (chaos warband who's armour continuously melts and re-forms). Looking ace so far
I wrote the fluff in my head before I discovered the Reavers lol!
I am quite liking the idea of gold trimming with some lava running free on the bigger power armoured areas. Then some bare black power armour so you can tell he isn't completely melting!
I think with the models that I have I will be doing the demon faces inverted, black on top down to red and glowing underneath as though they have pushed up through some lava. I need my new brushes to get here ASAP so I can get started!
Well, since I'm painting a bunch of Death Company anyhow, I figured, why not join the fun!
The finished work might be 1 model or two, if I can think of a way to make them look good together (they need to be playable units, not posed for a diorama hehe):
I was debating this for a few minutes, and I was originally going to go with:
Spoiler:
1, I can paint up my dead space marines from last month and enter them in.
2. I am currently working on my main army ('nids), so for veterans I have:
a. make a carnifex into Old One Eye - not keen on that one. I would really want to do conversion work to make it properly fluffy, and rules wise there's no point to throwing it in the army
b. paint Deathleaper
c. build and paint a Swarmlord. I have enough extra bits from my Flyrants that I could easily build one.
And then it occurred to me, my dead space marine is from my toxicrene kit. I shall just paint up the toxicrene and the dead space marine and enter the whole thing.
So far during the campaign that we've run...this thing has died more to psychic scream than any type of combined fire.... I have no idea how to represent that.
Final finished entry pics
"Alas......poor mon'keigh"
Here we go. Finally finished up my Solitaire. Soz about the dodgy shots. Camera decided to be a complete tosser this evening. Still - the fella is all done. The original hand bothered me so I amputated the fether, flipped and reattached. Needed something in it .....ah - the head of a cultist from the DV set Anyways - there he is, hope yez like him. Tricky wee fether to paint but fun nonetheless
Alright, figured out what I was doing wrong with image hosting website, and after much deliberation I finally decided that I will build a Boss Nob Biker, and here is my proof picture.

This is Big Mek Squigmek. He's been personally recruited by Ghazghkull to bring the might of his Evil Sunz to the next mighty WAAAAAAgh!
Here is Rocinante a character Warjack. I've always seen the model painted all pretty and factory fresh. I figured he would be all beaten up after a hard campaign.

Wow! Was that made from the Mechanicus Walker thing?

Good job!!!

Thanks everyone! Yeah it is indeed the new Skitaari walker thingamajig... It was a really cool kit. There's so many cool little gadgets and gizmos in the kit that actually can be made to look really Orky
with a minimum of effort.
I did some more work on Squigmek tonight. Should be ready to spray him tomorrow and then crack on with slapping some paint on!
Sprues for the Finecast Space Marine Terminator Chaplain
The pieces cut and (mostly) cleaned of excess/flash/whatever
The only real big blemishes were at the bottom of the torso: air bubbles that I won't bother with since they'll be covered up once the model is complete.

They look fantastic! Wow - they're gonna take some beating!
I'm going to have to drop from this challenge. Would love to stay in it, but I have a new job now, so I'm getting into that and am not having the time to paint right now

Try uploading pictures to the gallery from your phone, and posting them to this thread via your computer?

I've had the same problem with my s3, what I do is upload the images to my imgur account from the imgur app, don't publish them to the gallery there, and then copy the links and paste them from a computer to the dakka gallery.
Just a quick status update: the basecoating on my Deathwing Knights is done! Here are some WIP shots (as usual, my photography skills are lacking somewhat):
Now I have to shade and highlight them, so I'm only really halfway done at this point. Ultimately, I'm just following the method Duncan Rhodes used in the GW video tutorial about the Dark Vengeance Deathwing Terminators and it's working out so far. I hope to be completely done with these guys by the end of the week, as I have a tournament at my LGS and I intend to use them! Guess I'd better keep my nose to the grindstone...
oooh - he's looking good. got lucky with the ol' failcast eh; doesnt seem to be any nasty bubbles or what not. Aye - drill out those barrels. I got the GW pinvice and it's def worth the spend. I use it constantly - not just for drilling out barrels. Looking forwrd to seeing that fella painted up. lovely fig
Looking a very diverse round-up this month. Really looking forward to seeing everyone's work.
Taking my judge home with me this week, and hoping a few days of nothing else to do will allow for some relaxed painting time.
Did I do something wrong, that I'm not listed? I came back and submitted Minty last week, admittedly not much has changed since, bar assembly and filling.
Holy moly! Everyone has upped their game from last month ten fold. Some really great work going on.
I'm still plugging away at my ork nob on biker, will try and get a wip once at least 1 part of it is finished. I got carried away highlighting the skin to look old and weathered and turned it into a bone colour with dark recesses so will need to fix that. Weathering has just begun as I got my hands on some new washes and bits to try out this month.
Sadly this is likely to be my last month of painting as my time will be massively reduced over the next couple of months. I may look at entering just conversions and have them ready to paint once my free time ups again but we'll see - maybe it wont be as bad as I think.

Nah, the mistake was on my end, your name/pic ended up inside someone else's Spoiler tags. Fixed now!
Finally managed to find time to splosh some paint on Raven!
Lovely miniature, absolute pita to put together. I must have stuck her arms on a dozen times!
Everyone's entries are looking superb so far, gonna be another tough decision at the end of the month
Some really nice work showing up here. I need to do some work on Fistgar, I've kind of lost interest (don't really like space marines like I may have once done...) but it shouldn't take that much work to match the dread's scheme. May break down and switch subjects if I can't find motivation, time is rapidly slipping on this one.
For my first month doing this I have to say i'm loving it! This community is great and I will most definitely be participating every month from now on.

Thanks. I actually mentioned just above the pictures that I needed to drill the barrels. I was aware of them.
As it turns out I found a pin vise in my tin of tools this evening when looking for something else. Here is the Chaplain now with drilled barrels.
Wow! Im seeing some of you guy's work and I gotta say, Im VERY intimidated by what Im up against seeing as how Ive never even finished painting a single model and have more time watching youtube "how to paint" tutorials than I have painting... Man this will be a very tough bit to accomplish on my part as I doubt even getting a single vote on my sloppy work! LOL. Im trying to post an update on what Ive got done so far (Not much. Magnatized the arms and primed then base coated) Ya'll are gonna kick my little arse in this one. Maybe one day I can get a fraction as good as you guys!
Automatically Appended Next Post: My update. Dont laugh now! LOL

Don't worry I feel the same way painting isn't even the part of the hobby I enjoy but I'm trying my hand anyways. Never know you might just get the vote, all you can do is try your best and don't worry about the votes when the time comes.

I still feel that way sometimes, just all about being confident in your own work but realize that you always have room to improve.

Don't worry about getting votes and what others are posting up. Have fun painting your mini's, do the best you can and learn from what you did. Apply that to the next model and then the next and you will be well on your way to being a fantastic painter in what feels like no time.
Thanks for the inspiring words guys! I was about to turn in for the night and not do anything else with the little guys but now ya'll have me wanting to put at least a good hard hour into it. THanks guys!
