Subject: Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge - The League Table
Hello everyone, in March 2015 Paradigm started the unofficial monthly painting contest. It's goal was to get DakkaDakka members to paint up their miniatures for fun and gentle rivalry. The group is supportive and constructive. Inspiration is drawn from each member and a feeling of enthusiasm is nurtured. So come and join in
After each month's challenge is complete there is a community vote for the best miniature. This is for fun, bragging rights and points. These points contribute to league position.
Each month the number of votes determines how many points you get:
1st place - 10 points
2nd place - 8 points
3rd place - 5 points
Challenge completed and not in top 3 - 1 point
For league position, the rank is decided as follows to minimise ties:
1st - Number of points
2nd - Highest ever finished challenge rank
3rd - Number of challenges completed
Finally - If there are multiple users still after the above has been considered, then they are classed as tied at that rank
It's been amazingly close this time, with a massive 390 votes cast, and it's great to see so many people getting recognition for their talented work! Without further ado, here are the winners of this months Veteran painting challenge!
In 3rd Place, with 32 votes each and receiving 5 League Points, we have
Talys, with a Death Company Veteran
And Paradigm with the Word Bearers Lord:
In second place, with 40 votes and receiving 8 points, we have
Januine's fantastic Harlequin Solitaire
Congratulations on reaching the top 3 two months running!
And finally, in first place by just one vote, receiving 10 points, let's have a round of virtual applause for
SJM's superb GorkaMorka Ork Nob!
In third place, with a monstrous Stormlord Superheavy Tank, is
Winterhound!
In second place, we have a fantastic Magos Dominus by
Winter
And taking his third win (this is getting silly now ) and with what I believe is the highest score recorded so far, is
Januine with another Magos Dominus and his Castellax Automata bodyguard
Congratulations to the winners, and everyone else who took part! This really was a cracking month and there are an array of very impressive scores across the board!
In 3rd place
Januine's Kataphron Destroyers and Skitarii Alpha
In second place,
ckig's Tarik Mansuri
And winning with a record 59 votes,
Talys with a Blood Angels Chaplain
Fantastic work from you all this month! Thanks and congratulations to everyone who took part, keep up the good work, and I'll see you all for the next round of voting in 2016!
So here it is:
Now a picture of my spreadsheet - far too much hard work to retype each month. Sorry guys. It means that the links to participants threads have had to go. Hope you can forgive me!!
The Dakka (unofficial) Monthly Painting Challenge League Table First Column = League Rank
Second Column = League Points
Fourth Column = Challenges Completed
Green Squares = Highest Finishing Place in any Monthly Challenge
Please let me know if you think there has been a mistake in position and especially please let me know if your username is not correct.
Paradigm or myself will copy the winning results from each month's challenge here to view the amazing miniatures from all challenges in one place. Please consider voting for the photos in the main DakkaDakka gallery to give some further recognition to the wider DakkaDakka community.

Hey all. Tidied it up a bit. Para did wonder if it would look a bit busy, he was right (as always) .
Januine has given me a gallery link via PM for people to check out, so click on his username and away you go. Any other participants PM me their chosen blog/gallery page and I'll set you up. PMing means it'll keep the thread tidier.

Paradigm's link is live. If you have time, remember to take a glance at everyone's miniatures and if you are impressed give them a score in the Dakka gallery - there's nothing like a metaphorical pat on the back!

April's marks have been compiled and added to the League table. Those not originally in the poll have had their entries acknowledged and participation marks included. Votes mentioned in the threads have been accounted for and allocated.
Points of note for everyone:
Big congratulations for Januine to be holding on to league position 1 (you are on )
Two rounds of applause for league members who have climbed the league table:
Garrior climbed from 11th to 4th Paradigm climbed from 8th to 3rd
We had 19 () new league members with 2 of them slotting straight into 1st and 3rd places in this month's competition and one landing 2nd place in the league overall!!! That takes us to 57 members overall and the more the merrier.
Keep it up guys and remember if you want people to check out your blog then PM me the web address for your desired thread and I'll add a link in for your name as I've done for Paradigm, Januine, Zambro and myself.
Until next month

Ok, so there are a bunch of us that got 1% of the vote with 3 or 4 votes, (myself included) and are ranked into different groups...way down at the bottom. Could somebody explain how this is done? Or are these just sort of arbitrary for those of us that didn't place and don't have last month's under the belt?

Thanks for getting in touch, the difference with last month and this month was that this was the first month to have the option for multiple votes being cast. Last month you could only vote for one person, therefore most people all were at the same rank (11th), but there was more spread this month.
To talk you through the way it was worked out:
Anyone who entered this month for the first time (or had only entered last month) scored one point unless you were in top 3, so after you were grouped in together...
... Votes were considered
And you were ranked this month according to number of votes (not percentage). Using this rank you were organised in to an order in the spreadsheet...
...the next step is not relevant to the people with one point, because you would have only entered one challenge. But I then went through the list a third time to ensure that if there were ties on league points with people also tied on highest rank, I would allocate a higher league rank based on number of challenges completed. I can't imagine this step having much use until we get into month 6 or above.
As you can see from the screenshot above, there was every effort made to allocate April's rank based upon votes received. I hope this makes sense.
If anyone has comments about the league order please respond, Para and I agreed these steps to ensure fairness of achievement recognition. If you don't feel this is occurring then we can discuss possible other options. At the end of the day though it's meant to be a fun contest, the League is more to highlight who among the members is consistently good and consistently persistent in trying to better their painting skills.
On a side note - jah-Joshua's link is live

Ah, I see. Para mentioned this in the voting thread - somehow after the voting period closed more votes were cast and it's not clear how that was possible. I had gathered the data after the voting closed, but before these votes were cast. The process of ranking had already taken place which was all done by hand because amalgamating the two months data is not easy due to the highest rank element - I would have no idea how to include a formula to the spreadsheet to account for that.
I also manually encode the forum post so that the colours appear which is quite pain-staking, I had stated that I would not be able to include those extra votes due to this.
I will post in the current thread these posts to ask for consensus opinion, but this will take another 2-3 evenings to correct and technically the voting had finished when I gathered the data. If the leaning is for me to correct I will have to go back and do it. I'm not sure when I will have time though.

@Schlyne - Para has responded in the current competition thread that:
There was a problem with the voting not ending at the designated end-point
Votes casted up to the end-point (ie when I gathered them) are to be honoured
Sadly no-one else has responded. As Paradigm is organising this and that the rules were set for the beginning, I feel they should be honoured. I appreciate it must be irritating for you to know that there was an extra vote for you cast after the voting closed.
The League itself is more about being part of a group of like-minded individuals who want to paint models and have motivation to do so. The table is a secondary feature and this is why very few people are subscribed and check by. It isn't brilliant to be low down the list, I should know - I was last placed overall last month (I got no votes and because my username started with T I was alphabetically last). That said I screenshot the section I did for a reason - loads of people have got only one point - if you enter this month and they don't you'll leap ahead of all of them. The League points system is designed to award those who excel but also reward consistent effort and participation. I dropped rank from 11th to 12th this month and I couldn't be bothered because I'll keep plugging away getting my participation point each month and after 6 months I'll rank higher than someone who enters once and gets third place. I am the tortoise in the proverbial race.
That was quite a long response there (). I will shut up now.
I hope you are ok with where things lie.

And so the League Table has been updated finally. We were playing with the idea of an article, but just gave up in the end.
I have had to stop re-typing the table into DakkaDakka code - it was taking far too long because we have had 81 participants since it started.
So I have screenshot the spreadsheet I have made and am posting that from now on.
I am behind on the winners and think Paradigm was going to copy those in, if not, I'll get them up soon.
Well done to all. There have been some climbers in rank and of great joy, at least 3 people have increased their "highest rank" number. So big thumbs up and well done for that. And please note - like with FearPeteySodes, if you win one challenge, you can skyrocket to the upper section of the league table. So go to it all - do yourselves proud.

Yeah, the issue I was having with an article was that unless all the images for the winners got hosted on Dakka (rather than Flickr/imgur ect) I couldn't form up the winners galllery in article form.
So instead, here are each month's winners.
May: Fast and Furious
Spoiler:
In third place, making the top 3 twice in a row, we have
SJM's stunning Ork Cyboar Rider!
In second, with just one vote more, we have
Talys with the Blood Angels Stormraven. Fast, furious and fantastic!
And having (just) held the lead all the way from day 1, there could only be one champion! A round of applause for
FearPeteySodes' Dark Eldar Venom!
June: Some Kind Of Monster
Spoiler:
In third place, and clear of the rest of the field by quite some margin,
SlavetoDorkness with a large scale Stone Troll
The last thing lunch sees...
the last place lunch is...plus snacks for later!
The last of lunch...
Crude surgery after lunch didn't cooperate...
In second place, and fast becoming a familiar face at the top here,
SJM with an Ork Meganob
And out ahead in first, taking his second win in just 4 months,
Januine's Crimson Slaughter Chosen
Now that were sticking with this format for the time being, I'll be quicker to post these across.
