Tau looked good on that battle table!
I see that GW is making the Tau dino-hooves look more pronounced
89756
Post by: Verviedi
Thanks, shaso. I appreciate it.
And now some bad news. My Barracuda's base died horribly in a cat-related incident, so it needs rebasing. Planning on using the pin+acrylic rod method to fix it, and building an entirely new base out of those large wooden round decorative things that people love using to base showcase models.
Also, I bought a load of new Tau, two Hammerheads and a Skyray, 44 Fire Warriors (Why Verviedi, why?! Don't you know you have to paint that?!), 10 Pathfinders, a Cadre Fireblade, 2 metal broadsides, and some LE stuff such as metal Ethereals and the Kroot Bird (Thanks BigWaaaagh!)
So big update soon, lots of camouflage. Debating repainting the Barracuda a lighter grey as well, or even adding some camouflage to its top bit.
Also, I have a wish list of things that I'd like, if you want to sell me stuff, click the link in my signature.
Now, for more painting. The Iridium Suit I'm doing for the Dakka painting challenge is coming along nicely. Here's the first WIP. For some reason, the lighting makes it look really rough, but it's smooth in person (and after I sand it)

Oh, I'm looking at those tanks in dread already.
I basically do rivets the way a cake maker does cakes, I have a squeeze bottle with small tip adapted and make a dot on the nozzle, and apply it to the model.
The rivets there look fine, different thickness and diameter are what one expects from Ork meks

No update today folks. I'm doing this so my 10,000th post is on my blog, and something notable.
I'd like to thank you all for being nice, supporting my blog, and providing feedback and motivation for me to paint my armies. I've improved incredibly over the time that I've been posting on Dakka, and it's thanks in no small part to those who have created content such as tutorials, given honest feedback, and generally post good things to help people.
Thank you especially to all the people in my local area who post on dakka and talk to me, all you guys are awesome, and give me inspiration. Special special thanks to Kanluwen, Peregrine, and anyone else who I've bantered and posted pictures of games with. You are extra extra awesome (patent pending).

And yes, Retributor Armour is practically a must have in the paint collection. Mind you, it looks kinda funky when you shade it without relayering it

Post by: brushcommando
Lol. I thought it was a gift from Citadel, but now everything is beginning to make sense. GW is run by the Chaos pantheon. Which would explain why things are changing and Tzeentch is suddenly getting so much love...
Edit: The previous CEO must have been a follower of nurgle -- the pricing model was tough as all get out but the rules and everything else just seemed to be decaying.

Post by: Verviedi
Thanks, G.A. I actually don't usually relayer my Retributor Armor, because I like the reddish-gold look it gets when shaded with Reikland and highlighted with Stormhost.
Also, Stormhost is another gift from Chaos. It is lovely.

The mission in question was a modified version of "Last Step Backwards". In the original mission, it is Cadians v. Chaos Space Marines.
The original mission has 500 points worth of Cadians with:
-Platoon Command Squad
-Conscript Platoon
-Leman Russ Battle Tank(with mission specific rules allowing it to also fire as a Vanquisher, if a successful roll is passed)
vs
1000 points of CSM, with at least 3 Cultist Squads.
If you look on the sides of the board, you can see dice marking out "The Long Dry", which is an area of terrain impassable to anything but FMCs, Skimmers, and Flyers. We modded the scenario a bit to let us both play with some new toys, and had a blast.

Aww. So sad to lose the 4th company stuff... I enjoyed seeing that. As far as the price goes, I'm honestly not sure what'll sell. I'd go for the absolute lowest you'd be willing to accept and hope for the best. Most people on ebay seem to be hunting for a bargain and usually pre-painted lots don't seem to get very many bids. That being said, your models are painted to a MUCH better standard than what usually passes for "pro-painted" on ebay, so I think you might have better luck than most

Regarding the weathering, I think the black near the vents in the middle of the wings need to be wider - the pattern of the soot doesn't look so natural, imho. You could also try chipping all the places where the craft "cuts" through the air, such as on the nose and the front of the wings.
Other than that, looks pretty sweet

Yes, I did. Rather extremely, too (Reikland wash, Stormhost highlight). I'll have to look over the model again to see if the nuln oil wash messed with the gold.
Also, yeep, the white bit needs another wash. It's very patchy.

Battle Report:
Sisters of Battle vs. Adeptus Mechanicus (1000 points) - Crusade
Deployment
Close up on the right flank's tanks-
TURN 1
SoB
Opponent went first. He disembarked his Sisters from his Immolators, and moved them onto objectives. The left Immolator fired on the Breachers, instakilling my Dominus (rolled a one for look out sir, and a three for invuln). The Exorcist fired its guns, and killed a Breacher.
Mechanicus
Used +3BS/-2WS Doctrina, and reroll ones to shoot Canticle. I moved most of my stuff up, creeping my Infiltrators forward in the Relicos, to keep them in 3+ cover. Onager fired its Neutron Laser at the left Exorcist, bringing it down to 2HP and stunning it. Breachers fired their heavy arc rifles and glanced the left Immolator to death.
TURN 2
SoB
Immolator full of Dominions and Veridyin outflanked in behind the Dunecrawler, and a squad of Seraphim deep struck behind my plasma vanguard squad. The Dunecrawler got exploded, and the explosion killed one Vanguard. The Seraphim killed three of the plasma Vanguard, knocking out every plasma gun. The right Exorcist and Immolator fired at the Infiltrators, killing two.
Mechanicus
Used +2BS Imperative. I moved my Infiltrators into range to charge the Immolator, and all of my stuff up. The Breachers moved towards the outflanked Immolator, and combined fire from the arc rifle Vanguard and the Breachers knocked it out. The Peltasts looked at the Seraphim, raised their weapons, and... "Take 25 armor saves, please". The four-man squad of Vanguard and two-man squad of formerly Plasma Vanguard fired at the Dominions, and killed the Canoness and all but one Dominion. Infiltrators charged the right Immolator, and killed it. The objective-holding Vanguard charged the Dominion, and did no damage and recieved none in return.
TURN 3
SoB
Some more Seraphim deep struck behind by Peltasts and fired on them, killing four. The Battle Sisters on objective 1 fired at my Infiltrators, and killed the Princeps. The left Exorcist fired on the Peltasts, and killed none. The right Exorcist fired on the Breachers, and killed one, forcing the squad to break and fall off the board. Nothing happened in the Dominion-Vanguard combat.
Mechanicus
The Peltasts fired on the Seraphim, and killed three. The remaining Seraphim retreated, and eventually ran off the board on turn 5. The Arc Rifle and former plasma vanguard fired on the left SoB squad in the supply dump, and killed three. The remaining two Infiltrators charged the right Exorcist, doing one HP of damage. Nothing happened in the Dominion-Vanguard brawl.
Turn 4
SoB
The right Exorcist fired at the Peltasts, killing two. The right Battle Sisters fired at the Infiltrators, killing one. The left Exorcist fired at the formerly plasma Vanguard, killing my Warlord with a rocket to the face. The Vanguard-Dominion brawl finally ended with the Dominion dying. The Vanguard consolidated onto the objective and sat there for the rest of the game.
Mechanicus
The lone Infiltrator charged the right Exorcist, rolling two sixes to hit and glancing the tank to death. The arc Vanguard marched within six inches of the left Exorcist, firing at point blank, and... whiffing horribly, dealing one HP of damage. The lone former plasma vanguard fired his gun at the Sisters in the building, doing nothing. The Peltasts fired long-range shots at the Battle Sisters on the right flank, achieving nothing.
TURN 5
SoB
The Exorcist fired a full volley of rockets, wiping out everybody in the arc squad except for one Skitarius with an Arc Rifle. The Battle Sisters on the right flank cut down the last Infiltrator.
Mechanicus
The Peltasts moved onto objective 4, and fired more kinetic hammershot, felling two Battle Sisters. The lone remaining arc rifle skitarius fired his rifle... and wrecked the left Exorcist. The last remaining former plasma Vanguard fired his carbine, activating his integrated aimbot, and cut down the last two remaining left-flank Sisters with a single burst of fire.
TURN 6
SoB
The last remaining SoB moved behind a wall to hide from the Peltasts, still holding the last objective.
Mechanicus
I shuffled my dudes around to have more objective coverage. Rolled the die, game over.
RESULTS
Sisters of Battle: (3pts)
First Blood (+1)
Slay The Warlord (+1)
Objective 1 (+1)
Adeptus Mechanicus: (4pts)
Slay The Warlord (+1)
Objective 2 (+1)
Objective 3 (+1)
Objective 4 (+1)
FINAL THOUGHTS
An amazingly fun and close game. My opponent was a joy to play against, always happy, and I got to play against an army that I've always wanted to play against. Any game that ends with 3 models on one side, and 10 on the other, is guaranteed to be fun.

106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Awesome! How did you make it?
89756
Post by: Verviedi
First, I took a Tau Shield Drone bit, cut off most of the stalk, and filed the shield generator down to create a flat section. I glued the Marine torso to the disk, making sure the seam was minimal.
Then, I took four Necron Wraith claws, and slid the little slit between the claw and the rectangular thing into the rim of the shield generator. Then, I cut an Omnispex in half and put it where the stalk used to be, to cover up the bottom.
I do wish that the torso was a little bit longer. I may add some green stuff cables or other bits to elongate it later.
106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Kickass thanks man . I definitely need to grab some Necron bits to flesh out my bitzbox.
If you're looking for a slightly beefier torso for another spider dude (maybe a heavy-weapons guy) the Kataphron Breachers torso is slightly bigger than a Marine's and comes attached to a bunch of cables where their midriff should be

Here's a little AAR while I work on some terrain.
I got crushed in this game, by the way.
The Daemon Prince charged my Dunecrawler. Its first rounds of attacks whiffed, doing no damage. The Dunecrawler hit back, hitting on a six, wounding on a four, but the DP passed his invuln. The Infiltrators charged in, and got utterly wrecked by the Bloodcrushers and Daemon Prince attacking them.
The Dunecrawler attacked again.
It hit on a six.
It wounded on a five.
My opponent rolled a one on its invuln.
Instant kill.
This is the second time that specific Daemon Prince has charged the Dunecrawler and gotten instakilled. My Dunecrawler is a badass. Thank you, Cognis Manipulator.

Post by: Peregrine
Suggestion on the Barracuda base: do something to integrate the ruin into the rest of the base. Right now it's a little too obvious that it's a separate ruin piece glued onto a flat base. Think about how it would work in the real world, either you'd have some kind of floor inside the walls still visible, or the dirt would have piled up high enough to not be a flat surface against the wall. Adding some extra dirt is probably the easier solution, so I'd do that. Same thing with the little spike bit, file off a bit of the square end where it's sitting on the ground so it looks like it's embedded in the dirt instead of just sitting on top of it. And then color-wise you want to add some of the red dirt accumulated on the ruin, so it's all one coherent whole (weathering powders are good for this). TBH this is one of the harder parts of getting a diorama to look good, but it's a really important thing to do.
Also, I'm not sure if this is the poor quality photograph or an actual thing, but the fire warriors don't stand out very well. The dark color against the dark walls makes them almost invisible at first glance. A slightly brighter revision to the fire warriors and some weathering/color tinting on the walls might make them stand out a bit better.
63000
Post by: Peregrine
Definitely looking better now. The only real problem is that the piles of dirt around the ruin look like they're obviously added on to a flat base since the texture is so different. It's probably too late for it now, but in the future you probably want to spread it out more. Or, ideally, use a clay/greenstuff/whatever surface across the entire base. You squish the ruin into it so it's embedded in the ground a bit, then add the dirt material simultaneously across the entire surface of the base.
89756
Post by: Verviedi
I think applying some Martian Ironcrust to the edges of the dirt would blend the texture, it's about halfway between dirt and ironearth texturewise. I'll pick some up today, and test it out. Thanks for the help.
89756
Post by: Verviedi
Very early WIP of Knight base. Squished the broken pipes into some greenstuff to make little slopes, and added sand to make it look like they're being consumed by the desert. I have discovered that Martian Ironcrust is a godsend.
And my cat has spent more time playing by dropping a single Necron Scarab down the stairs, than he has spent playing with his real cat toys. This is astoundingly annoying to wake up to.
89756
Post by: Verviedi
Now that it's (almost) done, I realise that the bit of wreckage covering the other end of the pipe looks awful, and should be replaced with some generic rubble or just sand and GS.
I think the Ironcrust forms a nice transition between the dirt and Ironearth. Your thoughts?
63000
Post by: Peregrine
Definitely getting the right idea with embedding stuff in the ground, the pipe is exactly the kind of thing you want to do. The main thing you need to do now is some more color blending to tie it all together: dirt tinting along the pipe where it meets the ground, etc.
106439
Post by: Ynneadwraith
Looking stunning dude I especially love the varied texture you've got on the Knight base with some areas cracked, others compacted and yet others dusty/piled up with rubble.
For the main base did you paint it mainly in standard paint and then brush over with some texture stuff, or does the texture stuff only crack occasionally?
89756
Post by: Verviedi
First, I squished the pipe and wall bits into some Green Stuff, to form slopes, and applied sand. Then, I primed, basecoated, applied Martian Ironcrust close to the pipes. The main paint is Martian Ironearth. It cracks when the pain is thick, so I applied a coat of varying thickness to the base. The flat areas are where the paint was thin, the cracked areas are where it was thick.
The toxic ooze is a flat area full of a mix of Castean Green, Straken Green, Rhinox Hide, and Moot Green. I then washed it with Agrax Earthshade Gloss, and finally washed it again wih super watered-down Castellan Green to create the effect of it running off through the sand. I then applied thick Martian Ironearth around the edges, to create more contrast and show the ooze running through the cracks in the ground. After that, I hit it with a thick layer of gloss varnish.
The final step was drybrushing the whole Martian Ironearth/Ironcrust/sand area with Kindleflame.

Thanks, guys. Here's the fluff.
Logitarii are the millitant wing of the Adeptus Mechanicus' Ordo Psykanica. They are created from cybernetically enhanced blanks, augmented and upgraded for maximum psyker-killing potential. Their natural psychic dampening powers are upgraded by their modified Infiltrator helms, which, instead of spreading the neurostatic aura used by the Skitarii, spread fear and psychic numbness to all in range.
There are many types of Logitarii, all upgraded to carry different weapons and systems. The most commonly seen type is the Logitarii Purgator, equipped with a baleful Radium Dispersor, which spreads lethal radiation and radium-aerosol, salting the earth and destroying organic tissue utterly.
Looking forward to Shadow War, my cyber-assassin bits should arrive today.

Here's the assembled and semi-basecoated squad. I'm in awe that I had all the bits needed. Surprised that I had five grav-guns laying around, seeing as I've never played Marines. Doing them in purple and black, as the Ordo Psykanica really has no reason to adhere to standard Mars coloration. And to make things easier on my opponents.

I lost a bunch of Hoplites and assorted Skitarii, and all of my Destroyers in the end, due to a Warp Hunter that deepstruck into my backfield, but I eventually haywired it down after three turns of rolling hilarious quantities of 1s on the haywire table.
Won with four objectives and Slay The Warlord, opponent conceded.
My "lolz" list of putting 47 guys on the board in 1k was surprisingly effective, I think.

Thank you
Here's my latest project, a commission for a friend. Whole army of Scions. Please ignore the Assassins, those are someone else's.

Getting to work on that Scion lot, basecoating in batches. Please ignore the enormous paintbrush taking up most of the middle, I took that photo at 5:30AM.

Very nice. I did my assassin's hair that way too... kind of a burnt sienna or auburn rather than screaming red.

I do all of my redheads like that, unless asked otherwise. I like my realism, not a big fan of anime hair. Good to see you like it
Due to my condition at present, expect slow updates.

I really should pick up Execution Force at some point. Those Assassin models are too cool! Your Callidus looks really good, especially the hair. How'd you make it look like that?

The hair is a basecoat of 2:1 mix of Rhinox Hide and Mephiston Red, drybrush of 1:1 mix of Rhinox Hide and Wild Rider Red, and then a very light drybrush of pure Wild Rider Red
Pics of the rest of the assassins will be posted when it's not midnight.

Is it me or does her hair look a little chocolatey?
Great work on that one, V.

Those Assassins look great! I have decided that I am going to get that box after all. Just waiting until payday. I hope I can do my Assassins as well as yours.

What are you using for all those Mechanicus "halos?"

That's the Fulgurite Electro-Priest halo, the most useful bit known to man.
Thanks guys, the person I painted them for is quite happy

Another midnight update for youse. I swear I'll post at a sane time someday.
I don't drybrush often, but on a model like this it works.

Thank you. Almost done with him. Here's a pic.
And a pic of the name/nose art. One day I will be able to name an aircraft Mistake Not..., but it is not this day.
And here is my tiny Barracuda next to it. Ever since the incident with the Marauder, he's been having self-esteem issues related to size. I need to feed him more Stormtalons to cheer him up.
