Thanks Archer. @Thraxas: I did pick up a couple of GW golds but that wasn't one of them. Not sure, I might have just missed it in the rack. And thanks... just one of those words in my vocabulary. You certainly don't hear it much on this side of the pond. Well, I spent the first part of the evening working on the gold of the existing squad. I added a layer of highlights and a layer of darks, so hopefully it's a little more aesthetically pleasing now. I started working on the golds for the melta squad and nearly ruined a mini. I was disgusted, but then decided that it was high-time I tossed some of the old paints I'd been using which were many years old and not in good shape. I made a late-night run to the closest hobby store (thank God for late-night MTG drafts) and worked out a new system for painting the gold using fresh paint. I think it turned out pretty decently. I'll post a pic tomorrow morning of the finished mini... I'm too pooped to pop right now. Bedtime for Bonzo as the saying goes.

Sounds like a lucky escape, it would have been extremely frustrating to lose one of the miniatures made with the expensive FW parts, doubly so given the hoops you had to go through to construct them.
Retributor Armour is quite new, it was released as part of AOS for the Stormcast. It has a funky white lid but is a bit more expensive than other GW paints.Irrelevant now as you have hit upon a new recipe, am looking forward to seeing it.

OK guys, here's one of the melta guys with the new gold recipe. There's 6 steps/layers to the gold but for all that it really doesn't take very long to do. I hope this is more in line with what everyone was expecting.

Greatly improved, much more depth in there.
I'd say at least two tones of gold (old/darker one, and new/shiny gold, or with silver mixed in, and a purple/violet shade or wash), but I'd like to hear the full how to it, if you can spare the time.

Once the time pressure is off, do you plan to revisit these minis and add some 'special effects' as it were? I feel some white scrollwork/squiggles and some sparingly applied weathering would really set off the smooth gold and purple.

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the support. The next three nights are going to grueling. I'd better have something new to show you each night, or I'm not going to make my deadline.
3 bikes, 2 rapiers
The dreads aren't necessary for Adepticon, so they'll wait.
@Paradigm: Yes, I'll re-visit them but I don't want to bling-up to rank-and-file troopers too much. Will put some thought into it when the time comes.

Some advice if I may Gitsy, try to make sure when applying your zenithal highlight you circle the whole mini in a cone-like pattern. I can see on the back of the centurion that there is not much magenta coverage, try to make sure you always catch the helmets, top shoulders/pauldrons and upper backpack every time. Top back of the legs could probably use a very light, subtle coat too just to break up the solid indigo there.
If you want to know what I mean about the cone shape, take a gander at my grey-knight tutorial the diagrams there should make things clearer!
Overall though, very nicely done sir

Post by: Gitsplitta
Funny that. I think it has to do with the way I hold it when I spray. If I misinterpret the "top", my highlights miss their mark. Thanks Tom.

Rapier is finished.
This will get additional detailing after Adepticon.

The army looks lovely. I think you've got a really good purple there, which is easy to mess up.
Someone (maybe Paradigm) suggested that when you go back and add more details you add some weathering, I hope you don't, or at least keep it very very minimal, as I just can't see Emperor's Children leaving their armour scratched from one battle to the next.

Dorito dread needs something. If he hand fingers, I'd say dust them orange. As it is, he must have someone else feeding him, so put some orange around his mouth. Maybe a spot on his forehead... you know, where the first one hit.
Or am I thinking cheetos? Am I making sense at all? BTW, waiting for Thing#4 to make his appearance... should be any time now. Neither the wife or I am sleeping well, hence my rambled, addled, post.

Public Service Announcement
Hello friends!
This missive is to let you know that for the time being, my 5 P&M blogs (Mantis Warriors, Bad Moon Orks, AdMech, Halloween themed Chaos and 30k EC) will have all their updates appearing on a single blog (my “Rebuilding the Mantis Warriors” blog… which will get a new name). Why? With my interests so scattered across multiple armies and terrain & the fact that I’m just not painting at the hundreds of figures a year rate that I used to… I’m not making enough quality posts to keep 5 different blogs going. I’ve got a few die-hard friends and supporters that still post… but not enough to build or maintain the community that has always been the strongpoint of my threads in the past.
If my circumstances change and I start painting enough to warrant re-opening one of the specialist threads, I’ll do so... they aren’t closed, just inactive. In the meantime, as of today (Feb 11th, 2017) I’ll be making all of my P&M posts (for all armies) on what has always been my “home” on DakkaDakka, my Mantis Warrior thread. I hope you’ll join me there for the latest updates!
Here’s the link: Gitsplitta's Unified Painting Theory
Thanks!
