ok, so this is what is gonna happen:
Over the next two weeks I will be starting and finishing four more warhounds. Two rather plain and normal and two SOB themed. Vetgrunt will be learning how I do it and hopefully producing his own....
Iam also going to try to design and complete a Caestas Ram by the endof January.

Well, no more work done on the ram but lots done on the warhounds. Having VetGrunt come over gets the creative thought processes flowing. I think of things to show him and end up getting really good ideas:
Above I have changed the way I am doing the piston mounts on the foot pads. Before they were mounted into square tubing. That always left them a little bit limited on the range of motion they could reach. BUT!, with Vet here on Monday (we had a snow day at work, go figure) I found that the pearlized plastic beads that I previously had trouble gluing work perfectly with Bondene. Never thought to try it before. Call me stupid. Now they will mount onto the little beads and have much more range without having to be forced into looking like they could work.
Also:
Here I have added a slat of slotted styrene simulating synchronous gearing......
Okay, that was a mouthful.....
What I hope to achieve is a more fully detailed model. I think it works.....
I think my execution on this one could have been better but I like it.....
Remember this guy?
Well I dont remember posting it anywhere but I made mold of the side cap on the kneesof this bad boy for just this reason:
Wow ten of those done in ten minutes...... That works for me.....
And this.....
Been wanting to change these up a little for several warhounds, now.....
And finally,
No, not standing yet but very far along. I promise when these are done I will have earned a retirement from titans........
Warlord, what?!?!?!

As for me, I have been too busy to post. Very sorry. I will rectify this now:
I finally finished all the toe rivets.
Next I had to redesign and build the rear toe. I decided to put the proper rear toe on these. In the past on Mars patterns I had cheated and just used a copy of the the smaller front toes as a rear toe. These are the squared ones with the rollers underneath.
With those details decided I needed only stand the five of them up.

46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
As I said a few days ago VetGrunt was coming over to talk about a few things.....
We discussed weapons sponsons, carapaces, heads and head mounts and the engine pod placement and decoration.....
I have mentioned in the past several things I wish I had done with my previous warhound. One being the cables that go from the main hull to the underside of the head and the cable that goes from underneath the engine pod to the individual weapons. Insisting this time to include everything I have always wanted to include I began by whipping up some of these:
These are magnets in tubing. The magnets are neodymium but are black because I filed them down to be flush with the tubing and the filings are, of course, sticking around.....
Then these:
Adding a few more rivets and flash rings to make them look more like cannon plugs eill be a quick job but for now, the cables are ready.....
Then I decided to trim the engine pods...
And, of course, I am also going to include the weapons servitor hoising on the weapons sponson this time. Another of those things I never did before but always wanted to. Here is the first. I like it so nine more are in the works......
Now, today is the 23rd. Which means that I have one week to finish the caestus ram and the two Sisters of Battle Warhounds.they will be my focus moving forward leaving the first week of February to finish the other three warhounds.....
I am in sufficient position to accomplish this goal very easily. See you soon. Automatically Appended Next Post: I should also note that I am want this time to actually do a more accurate job on the trim and decoration. Meaning, as the FW looks, so shall I attempt mine to look.....
48594
Post by: dsteingass
The trim is looking very nice! Are you sure that paint will stick to those elastic bands though?
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
In fact, I am positive it wont. But they are cloth covered and will look fiine when the tips are painted.
48594
Post by: dsteingass
You might be able to soak/brush them in thin CA. I do that to stiffen model chains that hang.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Yeah, but why? If cables are usually black anyway and with them unpainted it allows for the weapons to turn in its mount with the cable attached. I suppose it is a matter of preference.
24297

what I genius of an idea... the hair bands... very cost effective and even reminds me in a strange way of the old cables you got back in the sixties and earlier on for electric connections...

Post by: mxwllmdr
Thanks, Fish. I have had a large hiatus due to work and family. I am only recently getting back into building and being able to post regularly.
Thanks, Dave and Vik. The idea of the cables on the model at all doesn't actually make sense to me, anyway. Such an exposed vulnerability is foolish to me. I thought it was always best served having the power couplings ran through the sponson for security and safeties sake. But for these I am being less original and more traditional....

Okay, so, loving the hell out of your Warhound design and I'm totally impressed by some of your innovative uses of materials such as the hair bands. Ok, so I am over the flu and will have more work up to view soon. For now I wanted to show off the recent gifts i recieved from a friend of mine who has decided to part ways with the modeling hobby. While I regret his decision I am very happy to have recieved the following:
I am not sure what the pin nails are gonna be good for but I am sure I will find something to use them on.
The set of dental tools I am taking as a hint that I need to learn to sculpt more. And the paints, all Vallejo btw, are a hint that I should learn to paint.
The little black trapezoidial thingie is a 45 and 60 degree angle guide. It may come in handy as well.
I have wanted a mechanical compass for so long. This one is rather small but will be very useful.
The two models are rather exciting. The Eldar Tempest Super Heavy Grav Tank is an Armourcast Mike Biasi model. Original from 1989. and the other is a scratch build Nurgle Contagion engine. It needs some repairs but nothing major. Both will be very nicely displayed in my trophy case.....
When I get one, that is.
Of course, the plastics supplies are a drop in the bucket compared to what I keep in stock, but they are very much appreciated anyway. Expecially the rather thicker sheets than I normally buy.
Dave, thoughts on the paint?
Oh, and please ignore the mess on the floor of my garage..... Getting ready to move after all......
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok, so wanted to show more but took a little extra time getting this to look right.
Whaddaya think?
Also, you may have noticed the toe hydraulics are resin. Finally got tired of making them so I made a mold. May even be able to find other uses for the bit...... Automatically Appended Next Post: Any ideas for banner pole end bits?
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Ok, so it has been a very long time since I updated. I am hoping that Dave is having fun at work but this not being able to post crap is killing me....
Anyway, to the pics. I have finished two more Warhounds for a friend in Washington State. He intends them for a Sisters of Battle Army using the new rules allowing Apoc models in 40k. I have done some custom work on these to facilitate that. I have also included in these a lot more detail than I have in the past. These are the last commission titans I will do. Until I start the Warlord, anyway....
I have made a rather nice gaggle of bits molds while doing this. The hydraulics on the toes, the underside of the head and the dome with rivetted ring around it all have other uses other than on a warhound. I have thought of three different ways to use the piping on the throat and at least two things the dome could be used for. The hydraulics have more uses than I am currently able to count. Vehicles, hatches, other walkers, wing aeleron hydraulics. I even cut a few of them up and used them on the Inferno cannon..... The list goes on and on..... And the cannisters on the back of the pelvis were originally the ammo drums for my Dreadnaught Autocannons.....
Not shown here is a Fleur de Lis disc emblem fitted for the top of the carapace. I will add that photo later.....
Gander at these....
The above shots are overall. These things have a stance and meanness unlike any I have done before and I think it is because of the shorter overhang of the carapace over the head....
These are a set of 360 degree shots. I am going to out up more and better shots later. The detail is washed out in this lighting and not visible. I put a lot of detail into these and really want to show it off. Tomorrow......
The Vulcan megabolter cam out much better this time than the first one I built..... I am very happy with it....
The Inferno Cannon. Bradley Todds favorite. He owns and operates the Gamers Hideout..... The fuel drum on the bottom of the gun turned out to be too small. Well, smaller than I liked, so I made a mold of it and then cast another, turning both perpendicular to the main body of the gun, rather than horizontal to the main body, as on the FW Inferno Cannon. I rather like the two tank look. That is another bit I made a mold of for this model that actually has many other uses.....
Not a lot to say about these three shots. These are weapons that I have made lots of. Nothing really new here except, of course, the hidden magnets to attach the cabling..... The Plasma blast gun has the original dome with rivetted ring that I used to make the mold. I guess I could have just cast another set of these, huh?
The head and underside of the head. I got tired of having a blank throat on my warhounds.......
Still have blank foot bottoms...... I hate it that I still have blanks on the bottoms of the feet.... I really want treads and adeptus mechanicus emblems on the bottom of the feet......
May have to make one and make a mold of it so that I can do that on mine.....
Thats the update for the time being....
I am posting more tomorrow on the gaming tables of The Gamers Hideout, in ST Robert, MO. The terrain makes for better gauging of scale and the lighting is much better for the white plastic models. The Caestus Ram photographed much better at the shop than at home......

Goodness, I just marathoned thos blog and now that's over I just want the next season. What's to come of the Tau stuff? Will we ever convince him to build a warlord titan? Will he finish all the warhounds in time? Will Arya find herself?
But why didn't you just cast the titans? You're making so many of them it has to be easier. If you don't want to get set up for it would you let someone else? I'd love to cast those...and maybe cast a few extra for myself when you're not looking.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Wow. Ty, thank you. Love to see new people. In case you didn't catch it - I've been away for a year.
The Tau stuff got put on hold. The wwarhound all (but 3) done on time and delivered. (Those three weren't really on a timetable).
I actually did cast a fair number of pieces for the warhounds. But really only those parts I felt could prove useful on other models.
Warlords are next. I don't care that FW is making one now. I will be designing it so it is castable. So that when the first is done it can be fallen. Then possible those pieces that needed chaos adorned can be remolded.
And technically this is season three. I had other threads first.

Post by: mxwllmdr
What I want to do is build a warlord frame that with the proper planning can be built as a Mars or a Lucius pattern. I also want all parts castable so that I can reproduce the frame and armor sets without having to rebuild them. My thinking is this: Mars and Lucius pattern warlords should only differentiate in appearance, not form or function.
Also, planning to get the Emperator built on the same frame. So it will have to be larger than FW'S current offering. My thinking is this: the emperator is nothing more than a Mars or Lucius with a campaign fortress built on top of it. I want the emperors occupiable portions to be built in layers so that it can be placed, layer next to layer, on a 4x6 table to make a playable titan terrain set on a WH40K table. "Have fun storming the castle" style......

Mad Max that's not what we call you

46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
General sale would be a violation of IP, I think. Reducing production for me is the key. I want several. Two Mars, two Lucius. That's so I can have two loyalist, two chaos....
Making the molds will be expensive. While I might not be willing to produce whole titans for someone making terrain pieces from warlord parts may be on the table. Maybe some epic bases for primarchs and the like..... of course any proceeds would make my efforts less financially burdensome.....

Post by: Vineheart01
Oh i saw the remoras, thats why i mentioned them lol. Theyre amazing. They arent to the same quality of the Titans (i can barely tell those are scratchbuilt outside the obvious unpainted look the material gives) but theyre still damn awesome nontheless.

I rather thought the Remoras were horrible. They were my first attempt at kit making. Followed by the XV9 Battle suit.
65311

Let me put it this way: They resemble without a doubt what theyre suppose to be and its vastly better than i can do lol. Tau arent easy to kitbash/scratchbuild for because of the armor patterns. Ive tried making my own suit legs for my crisis suits, i just cant do it (shaky hands and i dont have any real tools other than a razor knife and dikes lol. Its a miracle i can paint as well as i do with these damn shaky hands).
What tools do you use outside the Drummel? I have that but i usually exclusively use it for magnet holes.

Couple of questions are you using beads so far on the toes as rivets ?
Also I noticed a small indent on the toes on side was that meant to be part of the design ? If so what is it for ?
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
That indent is a small imperfection in the mold that I chose not to correct because green stuff is cheap and silicone is not and there is less a chance of screwing up the green stuff than the silicone.
I told my son that I was nervous about making a mold for the toe shield and he said shut up and just do it, pussy.
So there you have it. I have been Laboufed.
Making a mold for this now.
Still need to put some detail on the calf portion before I mold that but maybe tomorrow.....
Seeing the shield on the toe though makes me want to modify the toe and do a new mold. Maybe more on that later.

The Mad Max Warlord Project family of parts so far. Four feet high and resin. Here you see the castings of all four feet and the related masters and molds. Also shown is the calf portion of the lower leg master, nearly ready for silicone.
Next in line I have a mold brewing for the toe armor and pistons once done and cast I can begin to plan the calf armor pieces. Each leg requires three each but they are ambidextrous so I need make only two total. Since it will be a while until I can mold anymore pieces I will continue up this leg and create a hip and pelvis piece. Once these pieces are done I will have to make a few molds before I can continue.
In case you couldn't tell the two on the right are the chaos feet. Subtle difference, yes, but there nonetheless..... lol.....
Master, the molds worked fine although I should have used a higher strength material for the foot pad mold as the undercuts have All but done the mold in. Luckily, I was able to get all of them I need.
So, until I can afford more silicone you'll only be seeing white plastic here.

Post by: mxwllmdr
Ok, so I have made progress.
Finished the mold for the toe shield.
Obviously the mold is not great, but with a little w9ork:
I got eight through really good then the mold broke. But I had enough silicone left to remold the half that broke and redesigned it a tad so it might not break again. Gonna get some sleep and tomorrow will mock this up for a look see.....

i am eager to see how you do the connecting knee section to have the calf and thigh together...
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
Oh, ok.....
Been meaning to post these anyway...
Wanted to stop working in certain areas and start others because some things need to be done before I could finish some others. So I have ended up with this for master parts so far:
Same groove and bump format I used on the toes. No, the knee joint is not done. Still having serious reservations regarding its connection to the calf.
Also, knee to calf looks as such:
And a, tenuous at best, mock up of the three.....
There are aspects of this design I find lacking for now, even knowing it isn't done. I believe I have gotten the height at this point a little high, measuring in at 14.5 inches at the hips. Wanting an overall no more than 26/27 inches high, I believe I need to remove a little lankiness. FW has there's at 22 inches. Personally, I feel that too short. All comparisons I have seen put the reaver at around 16 inches and when shown side by side with the Warlord the warhound comes in at waist height.
I am removing that extra height in this area:
Everything, below the line of course, when removed will correct the slight angle miscalculation and drop the overall 1.5 inches. I will also be dropping the waist line lower than the top of the thigh for an added inch of shortness without greatly affecting the overall feel. That puts me back in range of the 26-27" high and leaves almost fifteen inches of remaining height in which to put a full interior.....

Allright. I know I haven't posted in a while but I have been very busy here on the hobby front.
Whilst working on the Warlord a few things were asked of me to construct. I will show one of them now. But first minor update on the warlord.
This shot shows a few of the masters made for detail. I had decided a while back that in order to do this project all resin cast and such that some detail would have to be one piece flat molds for application to the main body parts. The pelvis proved to be no exception and as such above are the masters for the toe bottoms and pelvic side plates. And of course the pelvis itself. While I have in fact made some of these molds already, sadly, the pelvis calf and thigh are not amongst those molds....
But below is a shot of casting progress as such. Almost four complete lower halves done and ready to be assembled. This will be a complete set of four lowers in about two weeks.....
And now as to why I am behind the arbitrary and totally unbinding timetable I irresponsibly, and inevitably, set for myself. The Void Shield Generator.
I should mention that I have decided that no matter what I make and for whom I make it I will always mold and cast the item. This is because, if you've followed anything I've show in my threads you'll already know this, I never get to have one of something I've made
16 warhounds three reavers, 6 thunder hawks and various other minor projects and I have only three warhounds for myself. Those are plastic though and I doubt I ever would have made molds for those complex models but I am in fact always going to from now on. So maybe in the future I can grow more warhounds....
Anyway.....
The void shield generator:
Plea see ignore the black resin gears as their color is the result of being cast during completion of another non-sequiter project as a means to reduce wasting resin.
Well so over the last week I have completed a lot. All lower body parts for the warlord are done, excepting only the greaves and thigh armour. And soon those will be done. As well, molds for the leg parts. And a VSG. In rather good time, I think. I am way ahead of schedule on the warlord overall. A little under two months and two thirds of the way there by loose estimations.
I will begin to have more updates shortly and more often as funds for a continuance of construction have been allotted and issued and all other projects are currently complete.
Ok, that's a lie. I have three other projects going as well. More on that later....
Thanks for reading.....

Alright, a few questions; are you duplicating the FW Warlord or is this a design of your own as I see great similarity in some parts e.g. the feet and toes but there are other parts I do not recognize?
Second, When I build my Warlord I kinda winged it proportion-wise and then added the detail but it seems you must have a master drawn plan so all this highly detailed work will mesh together when assembled; can we see the drawn overall plan?
Third and this is more of an observation than a question; the last image you posted shows four "gears" meshed together but as they all interlock with each other, how can they turn if in fact they are meant to turn assuming the laws of mechanics still apply in the 401st century? One has to assume miles long 40K Starship transports are too large to land and an image I saw years ago depicted a Warlord Titan hangar bay aboard such a transport so there must be a way to convey them to the surface of a contested planet ergo drop pods. Four feet high would be a pretty good estimation of a scale Titan Drop Pod.
Hey, what do I know?
BTW I also took Major's ironical usage of the word "Offensive" as supremely complimentary; that's why I seconded it.
46192
Post by: mxwllmdr
You know a whole crapload, to be honest. I think actually that a warlord drop pod for a titan is probably not an untoward idea it's just that the structural integrity would have to survive the equivalent of a meteor striking the surface of the planet. How do you pad effectively a hundreds of millions of tons steel bipedal against that force?

mxwllmdr wrote:...................... How do you pad effectively a hundreds of millions of tons steel bipedal against that force? Since terminal velocity is pretty much a surface phenomenon we cannot rely on drag to slow the capsule down significantly plus the ablation shield would have to be a significant percentage of the total mass of the pod; drogue chutes are likewise ineffective except in the final stage of descent so therefore retro rocket type devices might seem the way to go but the 40K technology implies much more. Considering the FTL capabilities of the 40K spacecraft I presume they have a way to nullify gravity or even possess the capability of producing anti-gravity so the endemic weight (sic) is zero or less. The employment of these devices could allow the pod to descend with the grace of a soap bubble. Tada! Of course with the same anti-gravity capability by just focusing the device on the enemy could rocket them kit and caboodle into space just as easily thereby rendering the whole concept of ground warfare hopelessly anachronistic and the 40K universe moot............ Never mind.

I've got no problem with the casting flaws, I presume these vehicles are reusable and are subject to both landing and battle damage; it's a little known maxim of battlefield maintenance, "The airworthiness of a vehicle is directly proportional to the desirability of it's commission." Automatically Appended Next Post: Speaking of reusable, does the Plexiglas container need to be kept on the mold during the subsequent casting processes?
Also, I cannot conceive of casting my Warlord with all it's myriad of details; how do you determine what is cast-able other than trial and error.
What sort of mold release do you use and how easy is it to remove from the 'master' piece?

No, in fact, I'll have to flip this half and rebuild the box around it in order to pour the second half of the mold but when casting it the box will not be necessary. I may have to rubberband some flat stiffness to each side of the mold when casting to maintain some rigidity and ensure the mold holds its true shape (flexible mold, remember? ....) and it is necessary to applied mild pressure from each half in order for the resin not to leak out before finishing it's curing process.

it's easy, really. I use a silicone with high flexibility and high strength so that the undercuts of the pieces aren't an issue. Figuring out where to vent a mold so filling is uniform and free of unfillable pockets can be a tad challenging but spatial thinking helps. Knowing where a piece has integral holes through its mass and planning for them is necessary as well.

Mold release is not necessary with flexible molds. I do have to use a mold release agent on the silicone when pouring the second half of the mold so the silicone doesn't form into one mass. It will adhere permanently to itself. That's a nightmare. Usually I use Alumilite mold release and silicone conditioner.
I will show the second half of this process as well..... Automatically Appended Next Post: Battle damage, yeah those casting flaws are battle damage. I like that, Black! Automatically Appended Next Post: More mold pics....
Unboxing, flipping.....
Removing the clay....
It is imperative that the master piece not be removed from the silicone or dislodged in any way until both pieces are completely cured.
Reboxing...
Clay filler (to save silicone and reseal the inner edge of the box)....
Gonna have to pick up some MOAR!!!! silicone this weekend....
What I didn't show here was the step after adding in the clay filler where I painted the silicone with a liberal coat of mold release so the two halves didn't adhere together and the step in Reboxing where I hot glued it back together around the first piece of the mold. That's why I use the picture glass for the box. Hot glue peels off it like tape but holds strong.
Damn dissappointed I ran out of silicone.......
Oh well, I'll get more resin for it when I go out as well. More later....

Do you buy silicone online or locally and what is the source of your clay? The biggest hassle on these projects for a beginner is usually not the execution but in finding a reliable source of casting material. I like the clay idea and am wondering why I never thought of it myself; even as I saw the first of your casting images I wondered what the h*ll does the folded blue towel do? I assumed it just took up space....

I generally buy from Alumilite drectly. Smaller kits come with a pound bar of the clay but it can be bought seperately. Any non drying clay will do. I found Play-Doh to be softer to press the master into but harder to clean off the mold....
Of late, understandably, have been buying in the tens of pounds of silicone at once. Clay is not included with those purchases. Luckily, it is reusable many times over if cared for properly. Namely, a zip lock baggie. Of course, mine is a gallon size and almost full.

So that what a Void Shield Generator looks like; silly me, I thought that was a Third Dimensional Universe device where a gear train as depicted of course couldn't possibly work.

Just been looking over some of your previous projects, and I have to say, that's some impressive work.
As for your warlord Titan, It really is coming along nicely, and I cant wait to see more .

Thanks, HK1x1...
As for waiting to see the warlord, me too. Money on that project is running dry.
Anyone wanna invest?

Very pleased to be back on the warlord project. Happy to report the mold for the calf works perfectly.
Even the first casting is well enough done to use. That's amazing to me.
Made four for now so I can stand up two. Still need to mold the thigh and pelvis but that's coming.
Didn't realize I had chosen such "Iron Mannish" colors but I like it. Yes, I am gonna learn to paint now. Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, and thank you EDC. I appreciate the comments.

Thanks, Vik. Means a lot. Trying to get some money saved for better equipment. I want a cnc table lathe and a vacuum chamber and a 3d printer and a laser metal etched and...
Well, the list goes on.....
What construction is happening in Der heim, bitte?

we´re building (have already...but you know...work never truly stops once you start... ) a raised platform for the kids to sleep...well...raised to over 2m high...that´s well over my own head... a friendly neighbour helped us with the basic construction work, him being a carpenter...well...we needed to totally clear the room, and repaint the walls...and now it looks rather pleasing all in all...
and i know how this goes... there is no end in the craving for new tools... i could probably make a check on each point in your (short) list for my own needs... but resin is still light years away for me...my cellar is not the right place to work on this...and the living room...just no... ...

I haven't subscribed to a thread in years but I'm really excited to see where this warlord project is going! Not to mention I just scrolled thorough all hundred something pages of this thread, I loved every bit of it, well done!
Cheers

So as I said back on the warlord project again....
Got a little more paint on the lower legs and wanted to show off my very mediocre skills.....
Also, anyone ever paint black resin? I was making some magazine extensions for my friends HK P 30 SK and had extra black resin. Tried it in a couple of my warlord molds and was wondering if painting them is even viable.....
And, finally, got this back from my buddy. He is an amazing painter.... Gonna hafta glass case this one....

Getting there....
Hoping to have molds for the thigh and pelvis done soon so I can stand it up at least from the waste down. Gonna do the second one in Chaos gold and black but have to chaosify the parts with some green stuff sculpting first.

Hmmm....I'd worry about durability. Styrene isn't the best for moving parts. IBS definitely.

Post by: mxwllmdr
Dave!!!!! So glad to hear from you! And yes you are correct. The do pieces themselves would have to be 3d printed then cast in either polymer or resin. Some of them would be quite small so I'm leaning towards the polymer.
