Dashofpepper takes the Pink Waaaugh! to 'Ard Boyz semi-finals, Round Three @ 2010/06/14 19:07:27

Post by: Dashofpepper

Hey folks!

This weekend I drove 8 hours down to Florida to play in the semi-final round of 'Ard Boyz. While there were closer venues, I'm moving to Jacksonville FL for my job, and thought I would check it out!

The semi-finals were held at SunCoast Comics in Jacksonville; I showed up Friday night to practice and ended up helping set up Friday night and Saturday morning instead and getting to meet some cool folks. I'm not used to weather in FL, and while the store had air conditioning to fend off the 102 degree weather, with the air constantly on, it probably didn't get below 90 degrees inside with all the people and the doors constantly opening and closing as people moved around. By the time I left, I had salt-stains on my shirt from sweat drying and resoaking my shirt!

I finally got the official GW Deffrollas and replaced my PVC pipe deffrollas with them. I kept them in the upright position all three games; there are debates about the deffrolla's positioning, counting as hull, shooting from it, being impassable terrain....so I just keep it raised. No requirements about where it is, only that it is represented and paid for in points and it solves all potential rules arguments.

You can find my other battle reports for 'Ard Boyz semi-finals here:

Curtis Hotaling's Imperial Guard

I'll post this the best that I can - Curtis only brought one copy of his list, and it was hand-written. >< I'm not worried about point values or anything because even if it *wasn't* right, nothing would have changed.

HQ: CCS + OotF + 4 Meltas in Chimera
HQ: Inquisitor Lord + Psychic Hood, Retinue of 3 warriors with plasma & 2 mystics

Elite1: Inquisitor +Emperor's Talos (I presume this is tarot?) + retinue of 3 warriors with plasma & 2x mystics
Elite2: Psyker Battle squad +4 extra psykers in Chimera
Elite3: Psyker Battle squad + 4 extra psykers in Chimera

Troop1:

Troop3: Vet squad with 3 meltas in Chimera
Troop4: Vet squad with 3 plasma in Chimera

Fast Attack1: Vendetta with Heavy Bolters
Fast Attack2: Vendetta with Heavy Bolters
Fast Attack3: Vendetta with Heavy Bolters

Heavy1: Leman Russ with 3 heavy Bolters
Heavy2: Leman Russ with 3 Heavy Bolters
Heavy3: 2x Hydra Flak Cannons

We roll for the emperor's tarot and we don't tie, so he gets +1 to his roll off. We roll off and we both roll a 3, but he gets +1 and wins....he elects to make me deploy and go first.

Pre-Game Tactical Assessment:
I have a healthy respect for mech IG. I don't fear them, but there's enough stuff in any good mech IG list that I have a very healthy respect for them. In fact, most of my practice games for any event are against the best Mech IG players that I can find, since its pretty much the most powerful codex out. The only army I *fear* is Dark Eldar (and even then, only certain brands of DE), but at the top of my list of armies that I respect is mechanized IG.

When I play against Mech IG....if I can go first, I'm generally ok. We start 24" away, I get to cross 12" of that before getting shot at, and then I cross my fingers and hug my KFF. If I don't go first....I'm still typically ok. I might lose a battlewagon, but I've got those flanking wagons of boyz to handle that - tackling my KFF or Ghazghkull's wagon means shooting at AV14 or me getting 3+ cover. DoW....if I can go first, I'm STILL getting 12" of movement in, and the whole cycle is typically the same, just delayed a turn. Going second definitely sucks though in a normal game.

With this particular deployment, where you have two board edges to come out of DoW from....things get sticky. Going first means that my opponent can pick anywhere on those two board edges to come in from. And since he's playing Mech IG....well, he's going to come out as far away from me as possible. If I come out from the middle of the table, he's going to come out top left or top right or bottom left/right depending on the roll (or likely all three) to get flanking / possible rear armor shots on my wagons as I move to address one of those threats. If I come out on the short edge by his deployment zone, he's going to deploy on his own short edge and make me cross 72" to him. I originally looking forward to this scenario because if I won and got to go second, I could potentially come out closer to my opponent than usually possible. In hindsight....I don't think it would work that way anyhow.

And worse...this is a killpoint game, so there's no reason for the IG to ever come close to me. No objectives to grab, just outer board edges to hug and hide from me.

In short: I'm in trouble. This is probably the worst possible deployment against the worst matchup in the worst win conditions that I could possibly encounter.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's a picture of Curtis. He may have worn that Captain shirt just for me and if he did, he's my hero! I do love the Captain. I was completely absorbed in the game though and didn't even notice it.

I choose to deploy nothing, Curtis deploys nothing and the game starts. I D6 and end up with the left board edge along with my back board edge. I move my battlewagons on 12" on the short edge with the trukk behind them:

One of my deffkoptas turbos ahead.

You can't see the other board edge, but I turbo-boosted my two deffkopta unit up to the 24" mark along the table edge and moved my buggies flat out up the edge as well trying to block off access to him getting to move on there.

My Lootas move on the back board edge and both thankfully get very nice run rolls and I spread them out in cover.

IG Turn One:
He brings a vendetta with something in it over my warbuggies and they disembark with flamers pointed at my Lootas.

His other vendetta moves flat out onto the table:

Slightly blurry, but he brings out both hydra flak cannons, the other vendetta, his leman russ tanks, and a couple chimeras in the far corner away from me.

Those lightning paint jobs are awesome! The straws don't quite fit in to an otherwise fantastic paint job though.

He also brings his CCS onto his long table edge directly behind my battlewagons. I left him room on the board edge there...drats. One of the chimeras in his corner is a PBS; the rest of his chimeras stay in reserve. I realize belatedly that as I move up the field, my unified AV14 is pointless because he can come on from behind me and shoot my rear armor all day long.

The squad in the chimera next to the deffkoptas opens up on my deffkoptas and a melta shot kills one; the other takes a wound; he had a turret heavy flamer shoot me that ignores cover so the turbo-boosting didn't help so much.

The guys in the back flame my Lootas, who die.

His battlecannons reach out across the field to my other Lootas and kill 2/5 of my other Lootas. The chimera behind my battlewagons whiffs and does nothing, but his hydra flak cannons ignore cover and kill my lone deffkopta. Other than that, his multi-lasers on chimeras take down 2/3 of my rokkit buggies and his PBS drops a leadership reducing attack on my lone deffkopta which turns and flees. My Lootas stay.

Ork Turn Two:

My deffkopta fails leadership and falls back some more.

I can't ignore the threat behind my battlewagons, but if I turn around with the whole formation I'm giving rear armor....so I split my battlewagons. Two stay put and two turn around and ram into the chimera trying to keep cover behind the other two battlewagons while the boyz get out of the trukk to assault survivors of his CCS. The chimera explodes and my orks will pile in and assault his company commander and friends.

My 3 remaining Lootas open up the Vendetta in range that moved flat out (the other one is definitely out of range) and I get 2 shots each for a total of 6 shots - I get a lucky one and wreck it. My remaining buggy and fleeing deffkopta fail to hurt the Vendetta next to them.

My assault in the back corner - consolidating back to the trukk to get in next turn.

IG Turn Two:
Curtis rolls for reserves and EVERYTHING (6-7 units) comes out from reserves. He starts piling them up in his corner. He realized that it was pointless to feed me two killpoints in the back corner.

His infantry blob comes on in the corner I used to be blocking off.

He shifts around a bit.

His battlecannons go for a narrow alley through my battlewagons to hit my disembarked boyz and kill several. His hydras do bad things to my last depleted Loota unit taking them down to just one model which fails leadership and leaves the game. He moved both vendettas flat out this turn to get into flanking positions instead of firing at me, so I actually survive this turn!

Ork Turn Three: I move my battlewagons back into formation - I don't move forward because it would leave something behind and break my KFF unity. I have no shooting to do. My gretchin come out from reserve and huddle in the chimera crater in the corner behind the battlewagons.

The pictures actually end here because the rest was absolutely murderous and happened so quickly.

IG Turn Three: The Vendettas are in good position, and I couldn't get that last battlewagon back into line with 12". The KFF wagon gets exploded. Ghazghkull's wagon gets exploded. The boyz wagon on the end gets immobilized. I'm left with a single wagon and a trukk. Battlecannons focus on the nobs (in a damnably tight footprint) and my KFF and several nobs vaporize. Everything else is out of range and his turn ends.

Current score: I've lost two battlewagons, two units of deffkoptas, a unit of warbuggies, two units of Lootas and an HQ (7 killpoints) in exchange for killing a vendetta, a chimera, and a CCS (3 killpoints). I have no more anti-tank, no ranged weaponry, and am going to have to foot-slog 40-48" down the long table edge without cover to even get to any of his stuff.

In fact, we're about to start turn four in a fixed 6 game mission. If I move 6" every turn, and get a 6" run every turn with every unit and none of my units die....I can only cover 36" of ground. That means he could back up a few inches, and not shoot at me the rest of the game and I STILL couldn't get to him. Since he's relatively unscathed, the not shooting at me part obviously isn't going to happen, and there's scant cover to even make the attempt.

Short of him charging his tanks at me in a suicidal wave, there is no possibility of me killing a single model of his on the table. I shake his hand with a rueful smile and congratulate him on winning a 2,500 point army.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post-Game Assessment:
I'm not sure that there is anything I could have done to make this happen differently. This was a terrible mission for me to be going first in, doubly so with the deployment rules. If we replayed this game infinite number of times with the IG going first and me trying different movement and deployment strategies....I'm pretty sure I'd lose every game. The combination of things were just too much. I probably should have deployed in the middle of the table and just let him have side shots on my wagons - I didn't anticipate him coming in behind me; cost me two turns of mobility.

With that said; I don't mind losing. I've said this countless times, but I value losing so much more than winning, that's my opportunity to learn and grow. Besides, I haven't written a batrep where I lost a game in a long time and I was probably getting boring.

Now with that said...a note on conceding: I've taken flak elsewhere on the internet and even here on Dakka with "OMG! Dash ragequit semifinals!" and other less inflammatory stuff, but the theme is the same - a lot of disapproval for conceding a game. Here's my take on conceding: If the game is clearly over with a clear winner and a clear loser and absolutely NOTHING is going to influence that....then why not stop? I can recognize when I'm beaten, and I got so thoroughly beaten here that I didn't feel bad in the slightest about conceding before turn6. There was nothing that my army could have done after turn3 to do anything except get tabled. No guns, physical impossibility of reaching the enemy....I was quite comfortable calling the game.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Venue: I posted on their website, but this was a fantastic event. Guys, picture this: The store owner, TO and staff order pizza for everyone for lunch. You go up front and pay $5 to get 3 slices. They circle the tables asking if people need anything to drink. The venue was simply amazing. On top of that....I had three great games. My opponents and I were laid back, we had fun, and Curtis definitely earned his reward. I don't know if any of you guys read Dakka (Suncoast or otherwise) but the entire experience was great. There were a couple of awkward moments here and there personally when people who say bad things about me on the internet met me for the first time face to face....but I was polite and friendly. And as always, meeting other internet people (the vast majority who don't fit into that first category) is always fun - putting a face to an avatar or a screen-name is lots of fun. I look forward to moving to Jacksonville and gaming with some of those guys. Old issues were put to rest and some animosity was explained; like most things, it centered around one guy screaming loudly (in this case, about him losing to my cheating self who ganged up on him with other people in a FFA boss fight).

I'm starting to shift into "wanting to run events" mode in 40k instead of just attending and playing mode, and seeing such a well-run event with such friendly folks really emphasized that.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drama: Interestingly...I never really have drama in games. Its always on the internet. I signed up to Dakka two years ago to engage with other ork players and trying growing the ork player base as a competitive group and got massively shot down by many people as a local fish who didn't know what I was talking about, and my advice was trash...and that when I got into a bigger pond, I'd see how it was.

So....this year I've been out in the big pond, mostly kicking ass and taking names. To offset all the forum trolls screaming that my advice is terrible, I've kept track of my gaming records in my signature. I can give a new ork player here on Dakka advice, and when a screaming turd chimes in that I'm stupid, I can point to my signature and note that it seems to work. And I've been greeted by a lot of accusations of making up records, and faking it, or having a huge ego for posting it, or compensating for being a loser for needing to brag about how good I am.....*sigh* The whole point in the first place was to help people filter through bad advice to my GOOD advice, and offering battle reports and a record to prove that my advice is worth taking.

And Battle Reports. *shudder* The kicking and screaming from hateful little anonymous (or sometimes not anonymous) internet trolls has completely taken the joy out of doing this. The internet is full of retards, I'm not sure why I'd think Dakka wouldn't have its share of them. The ratio of rubbish/useful has been getting really bad, and even has its own dedicated threads in the DCM forums about what to do about it - its getting out of control.

The fact remains; I get along with people in person, we have fun games, I make a new friend. Unfortunately, they are oftentimes surprised to find that I'm a nice guy and fun to play with....because of what they've heard about me. Usually tied into some drama. My first batrep for semi-finals got invaded by some internet trolls who wanted to scream at everyone what a dirty jerk I was for things not even related. The moral of the story is that there's a complicated equation that balances effort and reward....and its skewed the wrong way. If there's only 1 jerkoff for 10 nice people....that one person screams louder than the other 10, and the drama they create is what is memorable about the occasion. I applaud those who write battle reports, make the effort to try helping to improve the community, but my willingness to do so has bottomed out.

What Dakka needs is more intense moderation and filtering of garbage; perhaps redoubling of staffing or something to help ease workload because its obscene.

So....for all intents and purposes, I'm retiring from public life for a while. I'll be playing 40k, but not writing about it, making batreps, posting on Dakka much, or having an internet presence anywhere really - there's simply not much gained for doing so and the cost is more than I'm willing to pay. If I were all-powerful, I would cleanse genepool of some filth, but I'm not, and also not willing to tolerate the filth. Bad guys win?

There's one battle report left in me for a game I'm not sure I'll even be playing.....if Stelek and I get paired up at the Nova Open either in the tournament or at the Friday Night Celebrity Death Match, it will get a battle report. Other than that, goodnight, good luck, and its time for me to chill and step out of the limelight.

Well with that Dash, enjoy the break from all of the trolls!

Good game, and a good show at the semi finals.

I'm very suprised you put the Battlewagon on the board edge. Why not deploy them in the middle of the table from your long edge? This way they can drive to one of the edges instead of having to go the length of the table.

Bad match up though, so it might not have done much.

I took BW orks to the preliminaries and did fine. Seeing the third mission from semi's I knew a shooty army would get at least two full turns of fire before I could hope to assault, even with Ghazkull. I went with guard instead, vendettas, melta vets and artillery. I played against orks in round one. The TO moved the last mission on the PDF to first. I won the roll, had him go first, and alpha struck him hard enough to cripple him.

I'm just glad I had guard and orks to choose from.

Yeah, I think he mentioned that and I think the fear of side shots lead to a tactical error that may have literally cost him the game.

It sucks but it happens. It's rare that even the best players make the best decisions all the time.

As far as conceeding, I see no problem with it. If it is so clear that the game is going to end a particular way, why extend the pain. The only thing that would have made me continue the game would be the tactical bonus points, because it is only fair to the other players that your opponent gets the points he earns. But even so, if he had that in the bag as well, I see no reason why congratulating him and relaxing the rest of the day is a big deal.

That was my thought, as well. With that deployment, his best case scenario against a static gunline was to reach them on turn 5. Crossing the short way should have put him in contact on 2 or 3.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
As far as conceding goes, it usually depends on the emotional state of the person conceding.

If someone throws a hissy fit, picks up his ball and goes home... that's obviously lame.

A calm decision to end things when there is no further "game" to be played, on the other hand, is fine by me.

The only exception is when ditching early can affect how bonus points, etc., are awarded. In that case, I prefer that a game be played out.

I'd like to hear some brainstorming about how DashofPepper could have won that mission barring mistakes by the Imperial Guard player. From the looks of things the Imperial Guard player didn't make any elementary mistakes, and somehow DashofPepper made the mistake of forgetting his exposed rear

Strategically speaking I think that this game showed some weaknesses in DashofPepper's army list. Without Snikrot and his Kommandoz, Da Vulcha Boyz, or even being able to trust to the lucky of a Weirdboy rolling 'Ere We Go, Dash set himself up to lose when his opponent didn't need to meet him halfway.

Incidentally, is it just me or was the terrain really spare in all three battle reports that DashofPepper has posted?

When I heard that he deployed on a short table edge I was surprised.

I thought the move was to claim the center of the table and then react to whereever he comes on. You need to eat some side shots and hope the KFF saves you). Even if he manages to kill your Battle wagons, you are still not too far away from him no matter where he comes on from.

Otherwise you have a ton of board to cross with an army that can blow the crap out of you at long range.

It was a tough match-up. You fought well, you tried, and I'm sorry it came down to what it did. Nevertheless, as you've said, you learn and move on. It is sad that you're kinda stepping out of the limelight for a while. You know that we'll be here when you get back, Dash. Those of us that actually enjoy reading these battlereports and are generally good people anyway.

Nice battle report, Dash!

Like people already said, incredibly evil combination of opponent army and mission...I don't know, maybe it would've been possible to out-run those guys in your backfield and, ignoring them, charge the main gunline ASAP?

Seeing the pictures it made me think of a Spearhead game rather than a standard 40k game. I think the risk of side shots adn praying for those 4+'s probably would have been the way to go but it is easy to naysay afterward.

It is a shame you are going to stop writing reps, I have really enjoyed reading them. In general remember it is a relatively small community of people who are doing the bashing and a much larger group who read the reports.

The Ork build I was considering had less loota action and more kommandos. If the KFF could protect wagons for two turns of enemy fire he might pull it out, but odds were stacked against orks no matter what. I set up my guard army with one unit that couldn't move and fire, a squadron of two colossus artillery. Otherwise everything could roll on and cut loose.

From reading the three reports, the thing I'm MOST disappointed in, is the complete lack of large sight blocking terrain. 5th Edition pretty much screams the requirement to have sight blocking terrain in games to actually not make it into a crapshoot.

Interesting Batrep Dash, I played on that table in round one vs. a Mech IG list and it felt like I was playing on a fantasy table. There was simply no where to hide on that board. If there was some terrain that actually blocked LOS on that table things could have turned out differently...at least a game would have been made of it. The thing that saved me on that table in round 1 was my smoke launchers of gay and two key mistakes my opponent made. I've always enjoyed your Batreps as they are thorough and have good content in them. Having good content is everything on sites like this. Bad content drives people away. I think your reports are actually good, valuable content. It's a shame that you won't be doing anymore, though given the circumstances, I completely understand why. In the last 1-2 years the e-peen of 40k, etc. has gotten completely out of control....like somehow people forgot that winning 40k is meaningless in the grand scheme of things...it's not like any of us have sponsors, or get paid to do this professionally. Until that happens, the accolades of winning 40k, or being the "best player" is pretty meaningless to the masses. Perspective and all that.

Do you think splitting up a bit would have helped at all having come in on the short edge? Meaning, 3 BW's on the side with the 4th + trukk boyz coming in from reserve.. that way, had he lined up opposite you on the short edge, he'd be risking immediate trukk boyz + bw assaults from your long edge.

The real problem here is that he's got a 48" range on me to stay away no matter where I come onto the table, and without Nightfight for a turn, I can't even get the benefit of moving under cover. Definitely a mission favorable to long range armies, especially Mech IG.

Oh so many posts while I was writing!
@Nurglitch: Hmm, I think his ony real option would probably have been to set up center table, with his back blocked by the truck, and simply ran straight into a single flank. With that in mind, he should have not worried about the side shots(relying somewhat on the kff for those first few turns) and more worrying about being in any sort of reasonable position to do...anything! I might have even dumped out one unit of boys to cover the back side, or deployed the gretchin immidiately for this purpose.

Other than that, I think this is the one instance where rushing his koptas with no clear target was NOT a good choice, that instead he should have waited until the wagons and friends were the most threatening and then rushed forward.

Anyway, thats my 2 cents...

Personally, I would have made him pull the flak-cannons off his "Hydras".

Straws are NOT WYSIWYG, and they weren't even on the right chassis. Let me say that in another way too: A Leman Russ with straws and a bottle top is NOT a Hydra. He should not have been allowed to field that crap, and you would have been within your rights to make him take them off the table. This is the semi-finals, and there are plenty of ways to get auto-cannons.

Either field the models correctly or don't field them at all. If he would have spent the time to make them at least look like he spent more than 30 seconds stealing stuff from the venue you were in, it wouldn't have been so bad. But that was just shameful. I would be embarrassed to have my name and picture associated with that.

Tactically, I agree, setting up in the middle, while allowing side shots is dangerous, would have given you an extra turn. This is what my opponent did to me, and it made my life much more difficult. And the table you played on was stupid too. Looks like it would be a nice venue, but your descriptions make it sound horrible.

Heh. I got my nightmare scenario army-mission combo in the first game at semis, so I know how badly it feels! Though knowing you no longer have a chance at winning makes the next two games a lot more easy to enjoy. As to your "leaving the limelight" I would just say that to a neutral observer it's pretty clear why your posting style could be rubbing people the wrong way. Perhaps you aren't quite the victim that you're making yourself out to be. That said, the people that flame you incessantly should also take a moment and consider a more constructive way to spend their free time. Good report though! Better luck next year.

Sorry to see you go Dash, like Monster Rain said, you do sometimes come of as being a bit "elitist" for lack of a better word, but you are one of the people that contribute the most to Dakka nowadays which is allot more than can be said about your "fan club". Your BRs are always entertaining and informative and despite playing this game on and off for over 10 years now (damn, I'm old), you've managed to teach me a thing or two with them.

Now for some comments on your last game:

Nothing to say about the game itself, you made a huge deployment error and your opponent punished you for it, he deserves every credit for that win... Now for the bad parts!

I really hope that that is not the usual standard of terrain for 40k in the states, over here that table wouldn't even be considered for Fantasy with that little terrain on it!

And last, how on earth did the tournament organizers allowed LRs with straws on it to be considered Hydras? I wouldn't play against a model like that in a friendly game, much less in a supposed semi-final match with a prize like that on the line! I thought 'Ard Boyz was supposed to be WYSIWYG? What else is allowed? Coke cans as drop pods maybe?!

We had several players at our location with some poor scratch build conversions as well. I could care less as long as the guns/turrets/deffrollas/bases are the appropriate size and proportions. Dash himself had some scratch built deffrollas. I've given plenty of money to GW over the years, so if someone doesn't want to shell out big bucks for Hydra turrets I'm fine with that. I try to make my stuff as nice as I can in the event I go to a tourney with appearance scores, but to each his own.

Table wise however, I would have been pretty disappointed in what I saw in your photos. I call or email the TO ahead of any event that matters to me and ask if they are following the 25% terrain guideline, and if not, can I bring some of my own to help out. If I know the terrain is stingy I plan accordingly.

I don't know the full story because I left early, but I've been PMed about peoples' games getting canceled an hour early with a "finish up this turn, we're only giving an hour and a half" because of scheduling conflicts with the semi-finals and another event. I got some seriously angry mails from folks who got denied a win or a game conclusion because they didn't get to finish their game.

I had fun though and none of it affected me. The only thing I wish was different was that my last opponent had a typed copy of his list. How do you show up to semi-finals and only bring a single copy of your list that you penned together? Curtis, if you read this - not sure that will fly at semi-finals; borrow army builder or use notepad or excel.

That's not a scratch built model, that is a folded piece of paper with 4 drinking straws glued to it! I don't mind if the model is not from GW there are perfectly acceptable ways to model a hydra turret that don't use any GW parts whatsoever.

By your standards people could show up using cardboard boxes as rhinos as long as they had the right dimensions and use empty bases with nothing but some pieces of paper on them to represent space marines... I'm sorry but that shouldn't be acceptable in any tournament, much less one of this calibre...

Sad to hear you won't be writing these anymore Dash. For as few games as I've played, I feel it's people like you who put the time and effort into putting their experiences on the web that have made my armies as good quality as they've played, and dramatically increased my understanding of 40k.

For every troll out there, there's 10 people who read your stuff and don't say anything at all. Don't let it bug you too much.

And to add my 2 cents to the mix... the low quality, and lack of terrain really threw me off for such a big event. I've seen much smaller events with awesome terrain... you'd figure the organizers would be able to round up some better stuff at least for the top tables. Also, the straw autocannons? Lame, but he might have had an excuse, like that he accidentally broke the gun during transit but still had the body intact... Whatever the case, the rest of his army was VERY well painted, and I'd have let him go as he obviously put some effort into it.

Get some better army lists though.

And Dash? Keep on playin' Hoo-rah. Hopefully I'll get a chance to play you sometime.

I worked pretty hard to get my stuff WYSIWYG - mostly by scratch building. I think its lousy to bring really ugly stuff to a game - really, what does 40K have going for it over a computer game, beyond the modeling? The visual is what really makes it worth doing. I feel bad about bringing unpainted models myself, let alone straws taped to paper... The rest of that army looks great though.

You are mistaken as to my standards, PhantomViper. GW says the models have to be at least 50% GW, and all the vehicles in the photos I saw, including the photo you pasted, are clearly GW except for the turret and weapons. As far as I can tell the barrels on the cannon are not 12" or 14" long, the model height has not been jacked up for advantage, so I'm fine with it. If someone brings a model that is altered for advantage, or I'm not clear what it is, I'll get the TO to do something. I knew that was a Hydra in the photo as soon as I saw it, so lets play.

Ard Boys is GW's strategy to get players to go out and buy several hundred more dollars worth of models. They don't ask for painted, because they want people to buy more and assemble only, then buy more, more, more. If they don't want painted, then why buy more if I can build a hydra turret and plop it on a chimera? If that same player wants to go to a more traditional tournament with appearance scores and such he'll have to do a better job if he wants max points.

I worry a lot more about the opponent who has a completely finished and extra fancy 2500 point army when I walk up to the table. I'm happy to see somebody with home built conversions, as that represents to me that said opponent is inexperienced with the models/army, uncommitted or rushed to get it to the table, and willing to take shortcuts to achieve his goals. That tells me that planning ahead, being thorough, play testing, and studying all the army books will give me the advantage. It did this time. I have to pick what 2500 point army I would like from GW...

I'm guessing that there was a lot of banning after the drama in thread one and two. This relative quiet and topical posting is kind of nice.

As for the straws: Curtis's army was VERY well painted. Except for a couple of straws. I'm not going to fault someone for not having finished it. =p I got wtfpwned, and he didn't need his straw hydras to do it so I have no complaints!

Nurglitch - lay off. There's nothing wrong with my army, and crap like "With the state of Dash's paint jobs, he needs to excuse the straws" is not needed. You don't need to like the paint job. Its painted well, if in non-traditional colors, everything is based, and its colorful and themed. You know what? My wife plays 40k. Its her army. So pbbbbt.

Like any game, 40k is like Rock Paper and Scissors. For every rock, there is a scissor it can break and a paper that can cover it, and your Orks found that paper this go around.

Best of luck in the future matches, even if there are no more battle reports.

Paint jobs are in the eye of the beholder Nurglitch. Adding the caveat that it's just your opinion doesn't mean it's ok to insult someones work. If this was a painting thread then sure. He'd be asking for feedback. But since he's not, it's not something to bring up. They are painted to the basic standard to enter tournaments which is all that matters.

Hulksmash:

My discussion of DashofPepper's horrendous paint job started when another poster got holier-than-thou about DashofPepper's opponent's fantastically painted tanks including some crude proxies using straws. I was surprised that anyone could be offended by such proxies considering how ugly and poorly painted DashofPepper's Orks are.

But as he said, and I reiterated, I don't need to like his paint job. I don't get why he would get so defensive when he's obviously aware that his painting won't appeal to everyone, and when the comment about it is defending his opponent's wonderfully painted army from being slurred.

Previously I'd tried to drum up some brainstorming about how DashofPepper might have pulled a win out of that Kobayashi Maru. But it seemed like people were too busy trying to be outraged at his opponent having the temerity to use straws to proxy Hydra Flak Tanks. DashofPepper could have replied to the people that took me up on my suggestion, but it seems to me that he's more concerned with defending his paint job than addressing specific strategic and tactical issues presented in the game.

I mean, if I had been as self-aggrandizing a tactical genius as DashofPepper then I too might want to distract people from how I lost, as opposed to owning up to what happens when my opponent's lack of incompetence means I don't win.

@Dash

I think its super lame and "soft" of you to let trolls on the internet get you down. I would REALLY hate to see you quit writing these great batreps, and from the responce here on dakka...it seems to me despite what any douchebags say about/to you on other sites that is unsavory...the content here will take a serious hit if you stop. That is a VERY bad thing.

If you ENJOY doing what you're doing here, you should TOTALLY keep it up. You should shrug your shoulders and ignore the flak.

Your problem is that you're fighting an internet troll war that is unwinnable. You're good enough with your orks, but your tactics online are terrible. You dont have to defend yourself from every idiot out there that doesnt even GO to tournaments, ones that dont win the games, or ones that are simply unknown outside of forum/blogsites. That battle is UNWINNABLE. Should you really be fighting it? DONT FEED THE TROLLS...its playing THEIR game!

OR, should you simply add more of the content online that people love to read? THIS is the reason I stuck up for you so hard on our WC website when the mods themselves there seemed to be being unfair to you. The guy that runs our boards wants more content...so I tried to make way for you to come in and add some.

You add quality content to dakka. Something REAL to read rather than another religious debate or another "what army should I choose" thread that noone cares about. Ignore the low insults of trolls telling you your paintjob sucks, your tactics/army sucks, or trolls that call you out on their blogs. You dont have to go there and give them traffic...and you shouldnt.

You should be playing the silent war. Post your batreps, give advice and have fun with the forums. Thats why they're here, and you've helped and entertained people with your content. Don't even bother with other forum sites. I swear, everytime one is mentioned (even Stelek's) someone is always saying "I've never heard of that site...whats that?" Dakka everyone knows...you're becoming a personality here. A cocky one perhaps, but you've given plenty to the community. Learn from your experience and keep going, maybe ease off on the cockyness and/or arrogance to get more of the responce that you can stomach to read...and ignore the haterz.

Dont quit...its soft, its weak, and you let them win.

Dont quit unless you simply dont get enjoyment out of discussing your 40k experiences online. From what you've posted...I highly doubt this is the case. You're letting the trolls get to you....Don't. You're doing yourself a disservice AND Dakka. This site needs good content...thats something you've been trying to provide.

Change your tactics...dont attempt to fight an unwinnable troll war across 50 40k sites. Restrict yourself to one or two to post at religiously...and dont get involved in personal flamewars. It's not worth your blood pressure.

I hope this helps, and I hope you reconsider.

Watch....."QFT" 's are incomming....I'm not alone in thinking this.

So I hope you will change your mind about stepping out of the limelight--I feel you have much to offer. Yet I understand if your remain steadfast in your decision. And hopefully, one day, I will find myself setting up across the table from you.

PS The same store that held the SVDM is holding a 1500 pt GT in July, though that is likely too far now that you are moving to Florida.

Inquisitor_Syphonious:

I believe I've already talked about that. I think his battle reports could do with more details about events (distances, dice results, etc) so his tactics and strategy can be evaluated more easily. His opponents in the first two games, for example, really seemed to misjudge the distances that DashofPepper's Orks could move in two or three turns. It would have been nice to have more detail so that those of us who weren't there personally could evaluate the numbers he was working with, and judge accordingly. It's difficult to do in practice, obviously, but I prefer that style to the vaguer approach that he uses.

Visually speaking I've said my piece and it's unfortunate the DashofPepper and his white knights have ignored my question about the terrain. Even if DashofPepper's army was painted to my liking, I think that the terrain shown by the pictures was both cheap and insufficient for the purposes of playing competitive Warhammer. It's not DashofPepper's fault at all, but it did detract from the experience.

You right.

Not everything at that tournament was up to Nurglitch's standards. THEY SHOULD'VE CANCELLED THE WHOLE THING.

Nevermind that people had fun.

BTW, where was the Ard Boyz that YOU ran...you know, the one with better painted terrain and painting requirements on armies? I imagine you ALSO served pizza?

I'd like to go to that one.

I mean, I know that the store Dash went to went thru a lot of trouble to run a big tourney, but YOUR tourney must be a logistical nightmare....must be great though.

So where is it so we can all sign up with YOU next year Nurglitch?

Because I don't have any painted armies, and I don't take pride in the shiatty partial paint jobs some of them have. I don't pretend they're visually appealing: I suck as a painter and have no need to show off exactly how much I suck.

But then I don't have to be a good painter to tell when someone else sucks. Indeed, I am extremely well acquainted with what badly painted miniatures look like and therefore can spot them quite easily.

In General:

I get it, nobody is allowed to suggest that DashofPepper's Orks are anything less than unique and beautiful snowflakes wrought DashofPepper's in-house bonesingers. Don't suppose we can get back to the brainstorming I originally suggested, or even discuss how crappy the terrain looked, and how it affected the game? I thought this thread was about DashofPepper's third game in th 'Ard Boyz Semi-Finals, not me...

I think it would be better if they kept the thread open, so that people could talk about DashofPepper's game. As he rightly pointed out in the first post losing is better than winning when it comes to learning. I'd certainly like to discuss what might have happened if (1) DashofPepper had deployed differently, and (2) DashofPepper had played that game on a board with 25% and terrain that blocked line of sight.

@Nurglitch

It was just the wrong place to do it Nurglitch. That's what got people up in a tizzy including myself and I'd do it for any other dakkite who's thread I was reading.

#1) As for the venue the terrain was so far below par it is almost painful. 5th Edition 40k can't be played without LOS Blocking terrain. This heavily impacted the game.

#2) Dash got to worried about side shots and deployed poorly and took what might, possibly, with luck, have been a game and lost on turn 1.

#3) I personally don't see how a win is possible with orks against guard who go second in this mission. You just can't cover the distance fast enough. My only thoughts would be to deploy center mass and send all my stuff that can turbo-boost forward like crazies! Probably shift my my mek to the trukk and have the Kopta's go 24" (they'd get cover saves) the truck go 17" and the BW's go 12"(add 1" if he has red paint, i forgot) and then hope it's enough. Maybe do this to force a mistake.

All I can think of but it requires that another player screw up to win which sucks.

In the Kill point aspect, Dash could of denied the opponent some kill points by turtling, but that is assuming he had the cover to do so. Without any intervening terrain, this was a difficult match for Dash to control.

@Dash

Looking at that army list was just plain nasty and there wasnt much you could do outside of deploying in the center and still weathering a turn or 2 of shooting. IG suffer from attrition and heavily rely on a decisive 1st or 2nd turn to KO their opposition.

With BW orks you live by the KFF and you die by the KFF.

tough break on the mission and army selection.

Er... yeah. Drama in the thread. EXACTLY what Dash is getting away from.

I guess all I would have done in that situation is fed the Chimera that came in behind him fewer units. Rather than staying put with that pair of BWs, I would have sent 3 forward (including the KFF) towards his lines, and hoped that your opponent would be distracted enough by them and you various buggies and Lootas around that he wouldn't dig into them that much. Heck, you might not have needed the trukk. It was one vehicle, with a small squad of guys. Deffrolla the Chimera, and charge the contents.

That's probably how I would have played it. Would it have worked? I dunno. That was a very solid Mech Guard army with plenty of room to shoot away.

The paintjobs are irrelevant to Hard Boyz which doesn't have any painting requirement.

Continuing to attack what is a good battle report by commenting on the paintjob will be considered trolling by the moderators.

Terrain was poor. No disagreement there. A battlewagon is pretty big, and even buildings usually have some windows in them that you can get a scrap of LOS through. I've rarely had terrain affect my deployment in such a way that I deployed to use it for screening - I can vaguely remember a game once where I lined up my battlewagon wall so that the KFF wagon couldn't be seen the first turn, but that was about it.

Also, given that I take cover with me, and that all my vehicles get to reroll their DT tests, I typically don't care about where terrain is on a table. A few things are always pretty guaranteed:

1. I'm unlikely to immobilize myself.
2. Whether I assault into cover or not, I still go second.
3. I will always have a 4+ cover save.

There's always 2-3 wagons in any mechanized list that I run capable of holding my KFF mek, so even if he loses his transport, there's another one to get into and keep trucking. As a result, I never really care what terrain looks like on a board, with the exception that I want my Lootas in cover, so need area terrain in my deployment zone. Preferably a nice flat forested area or a building so that they aren't falling over as I try balancing them on a hill or a crater.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deployment: I probably should have moved on in my center bottom; I expect that he would have moved on top right and bottom right, with a unit (Leman Russ or hydras) in the top right to grief me when I turn to engage another target. I think I addressed this in my original post, but my key to dealing with Mech IG is that in a normal 40k mission, they can only get 36" away from me or so - I can get there in a couple turns. Adding another board edge where I deploy first is the cincher to making sure I take a beat down. If I had won the roll off, I would have gone second. He would have deployed in his top right corner and spread out to the middle of his board, along his back table edge, so that I still had to cross 40" or so to get to him down the length of the board, with nothing gained from coming out my short edge. Smart move on his part for sure.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Painting: This thread isn't about painting. The Pink Waaaugh! is themed with their own unique backstory, has a colorful paint scheme that is well received in GTs, and is fun to play with and against. It typically gets about 60% to 70% of paint points, with the remainder being missed because of a lack of ink or shading. They aren't inked or shaded because Dodiez doesn't WANT them to be; shading subdues the vibrancy of the colors she uses, and I bought her a whole set of inks, which she has no interest in using. On a more pointed note....Nurglitch, your posting history in threads I create have a trend of negativity, criticism, and little contribution except for you to express your disapproval of my opinions, my army lists, my advice, the fact that other people do it better than me, and now the paint job on my armies. Please stop stalking me, it is uncomfortable.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deadshane: My respect for you went up a couple of notches. Ultimately, you're right and I've been "bombardlemented" (hehehe to anyone who gets that) by PMs, e-mails, and Skypes. My problem is that I have a REAL tough time letting a wrong go unanswered. I keep giving analogies, and here's another. This past weekend at 'Ard Boyz, one of the guys playing had a friend(?) spectating at his table. He started accusing his friend of bringing him bad luck, and telling him to leave. His friend is laughing it off, but its getting more awkward and the guy is like, "No I'm serious - go home, I don't want you here." Typical person will whisper or look on in disbelief. Dashofpepper has to open his mouth and say, "Hey! Be nice!" I would have elaborated, but I was in the middle of a dice roll. I have a real tough time letting someone's mistreatment of someone ELSE pass by unnoticed (get me drunk and I'll tell you some crazy stories about beating up drug dealers and other random acts of vigilantism against evildoers) let alone mistreatment of me. Not a batman wannabe, but I was always a fan of Mack Bolan. Didn't join the army for guns....I wanted to do my part to stop bad people from doing bad things. Bad people exist on the internet and I'm drawn to fighting them like a moth to a flame.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hulksmash; Hydras. Turbo-boosting deffkoptas get sad faces when shot at by STR7 AP4 flak cannons that ignore flat out / turbo-boosting saves. Which is what happened. I think I still would have gotten owned if I started in the middle simply because of the mission, deployment, and matchup. Might be worth getting someone to Vassal it out with me for a replay and see what happens.

Ironically, my first two opponents suffered because they didn't make an impact on my battlewagons. My last opponent succeeded because he took out everything BUT the battlewagons (all my anti-tank capabilities) first.

Where is the right place Hulksmash? There is actually an issue worth discussing here, even in Nurglitch attacks it a little heavy handedly. There are numerous WYSIWYG threads popping up lately, and even a couple of "What is Acceptable Counts As?" threads as well, directly related to the 'Ard Boyz.

The issue is that one player in this match essentially scratch built hydras with straws. The question being, is that acceptable? Most posters here would counter that since that army is so beautifully painted, the straws can be ignored. But what about if it was unpainted? And what if the player disgards the straws when he actually finishes the models, or maybe never does. It seems to be pushing the envelope a little bit for WYSIWYG. An interesting corollary being, since Dash's army isn't painted as well, would you all have deemed it acceptable if he used straws for some of his big shootas/deffguns/whatever? That seems like a double standard.

I think that's what Nurglitch is getting at.

Also, is it acceptable for Dash to mount his DeffRollaz "Up" like he did?

Anyway, it's definetely worth of discussion.

Nice Batrep there Dash- and fair enough declaring at the point you did-If no Bonus points lost by opp 4 example

And Nurglitch- normally I think you are fairly accurate with your view on things, and the interpretation of others.

This time, I feel you have been a little too forthright with your criticism. Esp since you stated you have no painted Minis. Just ease up on the harshness of it, in that case, IMO.

@ whitedragon- I think I remember DoP stating they were up so no 'cheese' rule calling about the new Deff-rollar rules(I'm not an expert on Orks)- but mentioned why in earlier Batrep.

I really hope Dash reconsiders about taking time off and not posting here. One of the best things I enjoy about Dakka Dakka is reading well detailed Battle Reports with pictures and commentary from good players with nasty competitve lists, Dash delivers on this. Not only does he have some great reports but if you check out the tactic section you will find Dash there helping players with builds IE: Kan Walls. Sadly this community is the one that loses with a loss of a poster like Dash and for what?

The only time I want to hear Dash saying he is taking some time off.... it better be to change it to a video report with full John Madden style naration with creative uses of the video pen!

Nurglitch
My hat is off to anyone that paints their amy and they have my respect, because they put in the effort. Its like when I go the gym ( I'am in very good shape ) and I see people who may not be, they have my respect for being there and doing something about it vs those those who have excuses not to go. The same holds true to painting.

As to the game Dash played

That terrain looked horrible to play against. Were all the boards lightly done in terrain or were the tables themed such as heavy terrain one board, jungle other, city in another and maybe bad luck of the draw on a open table top with some craters for your match? If it was just bad luck on the draw, then I guess no biggie since I like to believe armies should be able to handle any enviroment as IG also could be impaired in a heavy terrain table ( City Fight ) for example.

Any rate, very interesting army style of mech IG with so many heavy bolters. Do you recall how his Chimeras were armed? Looked like he was fearful of horde type armies and was secure enough with his anti vehicle set up in the BC of the Russ's with the suicide melta veteran squads with the Hydras for fast / light vehicles. Would be very interested to read a battle report of his other two games.

Again, appreciate the well written and nicely detailed report.

Like Dash, I played on this table and it literally had nothing taller than 3/4" barriers scattered around with about a dozen or more dragon's teeth. The ONLY building/ terrain tall enough to block somewhat...was the bunker in the center. However, the bunker was small measuring about 3" x 5" mounted on a small hill. In my first round game, the only thing that sort of saved me was the Fog and my smoke launchers of gay. Without those I would have faired much worse. As it was, the game was looking to be a draw until my opponent made to grave errors that I capitalized on to pull a Minor Win.

The various blog posts and junk out there were people write stupid stuff - I don't go looking for it, but people PM me with "Did you know that so and so is calling you a cheater on their blog at www.stupidblog.com? Stuff like that.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shrubs: Purple People Eaters. Hrm. You know, I strongly considered bringing DE to 'Ard Boyz. I even called Hulksmash on the phone a couple days before 'Ard Boyz because my decision to bring Orks was wavering. He reinforced my ingrained beliefs though that Dark Eldar aren't meant to be played at 2500 points. Heck, you can almost max out a the FoC at 1850, and you *can* max it out at 2,000. Adding 500 more points doesn't really make you any killier, just more survivable, which is antithetical to the whole point of a glass cannon anyway. If I *had* brought DE, here's what I think would have happened:

Game 1: My whole army moves flat out around the table, lining up to seriously screw with his ability to deep-strike anywhere except where I want him - ravagers are in the back protected from short range meltas. After he deep-strikes and brings out his units (even with cover, I imagine I'd lose a transport or two here), I go to work with disintegrators (STR7 AP2) and vaporize his marines while my lances work on the drop pods. End result would still be a massacre because he can't split fire with a unit, nor fire his deathstrikes the turn he comes in - so at worst, I'd be trading a 55 point raider per turn in exchange for a 10 man tactical unit and a drop pod.

Game2: My whole army would have moved up 12". With no seize, Lelith and her retinue would be sitting on a 12" charge and they'd go take down one of the central lascannon teams (away from the dreads). All my lances (and blasters where applicable) would be focused on those two dreadnoughts until they were at least shaken, while my disintegrators lined up clear fields of fire into his missile teams and other lascannon team. My DE are made to kill MEQ, and I think the slaughter would have been just as bad.

Game3: Forced to go first....My whole army would have moved flat out onto the board; I think I would have screened off half of the bottom right and 1/3 of the top board edge, forcing him to bring his stuff out inside the space I left him. From there I'd need to live through a turn of his shooting (and even multi-lasers can hurt badly) to try administering my own punishment. My alternative would be to fully reserve my army and force him to come on first so that I still get to strike first; but I don't see all my expensive haywire grenades (my vehicle killers) really paying for themselves. I still think that with this deployment, and my inability to GET to anything, I'd be in serious trouble. I'd be curious to know what army out there could really go first against Mech IG in scenario 3 and win.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DooDoo: Stelek's criticism was that my ork list sucks, it isn't competitive, my list sucks, and that I'm stupid. There wasn't any "You're lacking this element" or "Shore up this piece." A blanket statement about a codex that it sucks isn't really accurate criticism. Unless you're talking about Necrons of course. I've always known that my list has weaknesses. I post all over on Dakka that I fear Dark Eldar, and even posted here in my OP that Mech IG are at the top of the lists I have a healthy respect for. When I play against Mech IG, I need a couple things to go my way to get in a win. I need my KFF to do his job, and it *really* helps to go first. I haven't ever claimed that Orks are the best codex, or that my list is a tier1 tournament army. I *have* claimed that Orks are more versatile than any other codex for the different kinds of lists you can build, and I *have* claimed that my long experience with a single build of my codex gives me an advantage over most people I play against.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Whitedragon: This isn't the wrong place to discuss whether straws are WYSIWYG and acceptable - that addresses a legality piece of the game. This *IS* the wrong place to make strongly worded statements about how badly the ork paint job sucks, makes your eyes bleed, etc. It may be YOUR opinion that my army isn't painted well. I think its painted beautifully, the woman who did it is awesome, and no one asked you for your opinion. In fact, no ones opinion has been asked for about my paint job here. There is no need for anyone to volunteer an opinion and start a conversation about the ork paint jobs in this thread.

Your question, "Is it Acceptable for Dash to mount his Deffrollas "up?" The answer: Yes. I addressed this in my OP in all three reports. WYSIWYG requires that an upgrade be paid for in points and represented on the table. There is no rule saying that the Deffrolla needs to push ahead of the battlewagon. Only that it must be paid for and represented. If I took off the hinges, dropped it in the troop carrying bay in the back - its perfectly fine. If I dragged the Deffrolla behind my battlewagon - perfectly fine. There's a six page thread talking about whether they count as hull, the rules issues that arise if you count them as hull, the rules issues that arise if you don't count them as hull, all the ways that using them can be exploited in modeling.....and the only real way to use them WITHOUT causing rules issues is to mount them without them extending in front of the battlewagon. You can read the thread if you're interested.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Borris: The chimeras all had multi-lasers and heavy flamers. Some had turret heavy flamers and others had hull heavy flamers, and it was a bit confusing trying to figure out what and where, but I knew they all had flamers. As for the heavy bolters - I'm not sure its so unique to see vendettas with heavy bolters; seems to be a pretty common theme to me.

This definitely looks like an uphill sort of battle.

I think the way I would have tried to play it would have been to put my army (in this case I am the pink orks ) all in normal reserves.

This way the ig player is either forced to play the reserves game with me, or just set up on his long table edge. This then gives me, the ork player, an idea of where the ig are going to come onto the table because he's more than likely not going to leave his entire army off of the table. I have decent threat from the deff kopta's so most things aren't going to come too close, and with the kopta's coming on later they can help to counter-act anything he decides to try to come out on a table edge near me. This hopefully enables the battlewagons to be able to point their fronts towards the majority of the enemy anti-tank.

It's risky because of the chance of not getting the kff. But the only other option is to start in the middle and circle the wagons and pray for either bad armor pen rolls or lots of kff saves.

I don't really post battle reports and I don't comment on them either. But, I will say that if you stop writing your battle reports, Dakka will lose something valuable.

As far as your personality, from your own posts, you might come on a bit strong sometimes in face to face matchups. It sounds like some of your suggestions cause people to take you the wrong way.

And the people constantly attacking you and such...

(hotlinked)

Also, welcome to Florida. The gaming scene can be hit or miss depending on where you are. Clearwater had almost nothing, Tampa has a really great store that I've been to several times, and I haven't checked out Anthem games or the Hobbytown here yet.

They did screw up 'ard bozy in Florida this time around. We had some pretty good competition in Tampa, and I don't think ANYONE from our store attended the semifinals. I've never been to the stores that the semi's were hosted at. Last year we had the Coluseum of Comics in Orlando as a semifinal location, it was scrubbed this year. For our entire state, we had where dash played, Miami, and Ft. L. (Which is really close to Miami)

Nothing at all in the entire central part of the state, and the Miami store would be packed, the Jax store would be packed, and people on our local forums were saying that the Ft. L. store wasn't the best place for a large tourney (and large players). By the look of it, the terrain for the Jax. store was subpar. I haven't heard anything about the Miami store this time around either.

(the problem with no Central Florida locations is that going to stores on either end of the state requires a hotel stay and extra money being spent beyond the gas price to get there and eat while you are over there.)

I think doodoo's coment was about how in a match up of two players at the same level of play ability that the orks are at a disadvantage. I disagree with this as ther are only a couple of builds in a few armies that orks have this disadvantage (super shootie IG and super choppy CSM being two of them). Dash against this army with this player and this mission (even with a deployment from the book) would loose 8 out of 10 times. Orks just cant close the distance and kill that many tanks with all that fire coming at them against a good IG player. A good IG player would just keep feeding roadblocks of Chimeras with meltas and if you get out Hvy flamers on each, I dont like Dash's attitude, the fact that hes a huge braggart, and you cant criticize him or disagree with him at all or his legion will attack you but.... His bat reps are propper and his hard work does not go unnoticed. They will be missed

I'll chime in the majority here.

It'd be a shame to lose anyone that takes the time to post enjoyable BR's. For those of us that may not be able to play as much as we'd like it is great to read others reports, especially when they are able to travel with their armies and play a variety of players. the little experience I've had with you has been indirect and you've been helpful. Shame to lose you because a vocal minority.

@nurglitch - I can appreciate you want a more detailed BR, a lot of us would. However, they take more than enough effort as it is and honestly I think the extra detail isn't worth the pay off to the one writing the report.

The bigger issue is that all the detail needs to be recorded *during* the game. Outside of taking a top down photo at the end of every phase (every turn would miss too much detail) and writing out hits/wounds/saves and range for every instance I can't see how you could record all the info without having a 3rd party video the whole thing.

At 2500 points a side and tourney setting asking a competitor to do the extra scribing is just dreaming for the impossible. Turn three would be as far as you got before the game ended or you opponent jammed your pencil in your brain...

Well, you said it was "difficult to do in practice" and that his battle reports are "vague" leaving me with the impression that you felt he should have and could have done better. My feeling is that, without a third party, it would be an unfair (read:impossible) expectation to have the sort of detail that "those of us who weren't there personally could evaluate the numbers he was working with, and judge accordingly" when he was participating in the event (moving miniatures, rolling dice, and shockingly having fun while doing it.

If you've got an example of a battle report that has that sort of detail, I'd love to read it, seriously. Sounds like you get to read a number of them and I do love a great BR it's what I primarily read here. Please share?

Dash, again, thanks for the effort you've put into these and all the best gaming!

I appreciate all the kind words!

In terms of batreps; all I leave a tournament with are the pictures in my camera and a copy of my opponent's army list. The rest I'm recreating by memory. I rarely report hits/wounds because I don't remember that stuff except for when it is memorable: Note that I report memorable burna activity and sometimes Ghazghkull's close combat action. I can look at a picture, see 3 Lootas standing there, and remember the unit (or units) that shot them, tell from the picture that I lost two, know that they passed leadership because they're still there (sometimes I take a picture with the dice next to the unit for leadership if it was heroic or failed or something). That's about it.

My batreps are intended to convey the course of a battle visually so you can get a feel for how things went down, while trying to give an insight into my thoughts and why I made the decisions I did so that other orks out there can replicate. The whole goal with the batreps, my tactical articles, my lurking and spammage in the army list section is simply to improve the lot of Orks everywhere and see them winning more.

Your batreps are easily some of the best online. And arguably the best tournament ones. The only better ones I have seen were friendly games where they had time to really stop, make everything look cool for pictures, right it all down, etc etc.

My friend starbomber has been utilizing a lot of your batreps to help improve his orks.

Ah too bad you are stopping, I'm not a big battle report reader but still :[

Maybe it's because I come from a different game background (Starcraft mostly), but I see absolutely no problem with conceding clearly lost games.

In fact, not doing that is almost seen as rude in the SC scene. I'm not really sure what the rude part in conceding a lost game is supposed to be - does it affect scoring in any way for tournament play o_O?

Dashofpepper,
Congratulations on two victories. The third draw was a tough one. You should always try to playtest scenarios, especially ones with atypical deployments. A question about your list. I notice that you gave your nobz squad cybork bodies. However, previously you've doubted the competency of any ork player who used them. For example, you stated

Dashofpepper wrote:Give them all 'Eavy armor, and they have a 4+ armor and 4+ Feel no pain. However, I would urge you to drop cybork bodies. I would posit that an intelligent ork player will pretty much never be in a situation to *need* a 5+ invulnerable save...here's why.

and
Dashofpepper wrote: Nobs in a battlewagon aren't getting shot at. Nobs who get shot out of their battlewagon are getting a 4+ cover save and possibly FNP or not getting shot at. Nobs assaulting a unit are getting 4+ armor saves and 4+ FNP unless there's an upgrade character with a power weapon.

If YOUR nob squad is in any situation other than one of those three, you're using them poorly.

in this thread http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/263869.page#1096629

What, or who's list, caused you to change your thinking about cybork bodies and adopt it rather than 'eavy armor? Given your previous strident criticism of 'eavy armor I'm curious. Admittedly, with cybork the list has a more 'cookie-cutter' feel to it, but there's reason for that, isn't there?

Hrm......

I waver on the use of Nobs. They're two wound models, so I don't want them attacking things with STR8+. Cybork bodies is kind of presumptive that you're going to use them where cybork bodies are needed. Which is typically where things are STR8+.

To be honest, that thread was a long time ago, and I don't really know what changed. Or if anything has. I *can* say that my decision to add nobs into my list for this point level wasn't based on a need, but rather two things:
-I felt wrong not using Ghazghkull to his full potential, and making a unit of nobs a troop choice is one of his benefits.
-My wife painted all these nobs nicely and I spent all this work magnetizing and making different weapon arms for them.

There is also the fact that many things that might not be a 'good' choice at 1850 points become better options at 2500. Nobs at 1850 might see 3-6 meltas/plasmas pointed in their direction (if it is REALLY bad) but more likely 2 or 3 will have range. At 2500 there is so much more firepower in play that it is possible to concentrate a lot more special weapons fire into a unit of nobs.

I think if you stopped posting your batreps and tactics articles there would be a SERIOUS dearth of good Ork tactical/list-building advice on here. Sure, there are undoubtedly a lot of Ork players out there who consider themselves experienced, and consider themselves good players - but as a relative newcomer to the greenskins (which I am), it's important to get credible advice from a player that has a great record and knows the race inside-out. If we lose YOU, we lose THAT!

Keep posting - don't let the spankers win.

Dash,
don't let the trolls get you down. I always enjoy reading your Batreps, and they occasionally make me feel like I should be making some myself. Also, I have an inherited ork army, so I need you to tell me what to do.

As for the game, I can feel your pain as my regular opponent lobs pie-plates at me in great number, but when I set up my board, we use A LOT of terrain. Like, the entire old 3 building set (administratum, some tech building, and another 2 buildings), the temple of the aquila, the new statue thing, barriers, etc. I can't imagine trying to reach his lines without a ton of sight blocking, my Land Raiders would just get decimated.

The terrain for that map was strikingly pathetic, to say the least. Compounded with the weird deployment, I'd say that match-up was made much more difficult. I might try the 'Ard-Boyz scenarios with my opponent next time we play.

I only have AOBR and one 10man assault squad from 1989 (they still rock!), so I'm still feeling out what army I want and your Batreps have helped me with that too. I try to make my stuff as nice as I can in the event I go to a tourney with appearance scores, but to each his own.

With such well painted models the guy really should have primered the paper and drinking straws hydra conversions. It would have hardly been noticeable in such a well painted army, and it would have been one of the best painted armies at a Ard boys because of ard boys low paint standards. That being said people should chill out, it's Ard boys where half the armies are bare plastic or only primered.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Mech Ork V Mech IG on mission #3 is a real tough break. That mission really favors gun lines going 2nd, and is the perfect playground for mech IG with PBS. In hindsight I can think of more tactics that IG could have used against orks thank orks could have used against IG. If you deployed everything in the center and all your units on the table he could have split up his forces and deployed in both his corners. If you moved your entire army towards 1 corner the other corner would have all side/rear shots at the battlewagons. If you split your army to go after both corners then both IG corners would have side/rear shots on battlewagons. With a 48" range on LC and AC, and a 72" range on BC most IG armies would love the opportunity to pincer deploy against a large group of ork battlewagons.

That was a real tough break man, and you would have done great against that IG list in scenario #1, and scenario #2 wouldn't have been the end of the world like scenario #3 was.

I would have had a blast playing against that IG list as my jump spam BA has the option to deep strike and only gives up 12KP so I would have a chance, but it would be a tough challenge. It definitely would have been more fun than fighting mech BA.

Personally, i dont really care for the paint job, nor am I sold on DoP's army list. However his battle reports are always entertaining.

I chose orks for my 2,500 point Ard boys army. I hope I get some battlewagons, and if so I'm not sold how I want to mount my rollers. I'm thinking of mounting them so they can move to be in an up or down position. The problem isn't "Which way is legal" the problem is no matter what you do TFG can waste your time.

If the rollers are up TFG can waste your time by claiming it's not legal, and demanding they are down.

If the rollers are down TFG can waste your time by claiming that the rollers are not part of the wagon's hull, and when orks disembark from the transport they have to disembark within 2" of the hull not the deffroller, but he will at the same time claim the roller counts for measuring range to the roller.

It doesn't matter how wrong TFG is when he makes a stupid arguement, sometimes it's best to just reduce the number of stupid things TFG can argue about.

Dash's list is nothing special. When successful players stick with a list that's largely regarded as a soft list it's because they play with a list that accommodates their tactics instead of having their tactics accommodating their list. If his tactics are sound enough to get as far as he did with a soft list they his tactics have a solid foundation.

Legally, as in WYSIWYG as long as their on there, it doesnt matter. I could mount them on the rear of the model for all it matters. Nothing in the rules I believe say they have to be up, down or even on the front.

In your second example, TFG is actually breaking the rules. Most TO only care that you do it consistantly- if you measure the model from the Deff roller, do so all the time. If you measure from the hull, do so all the time. If the TFG or even you try to measure one way for movement or range and another for disembarking, thats actually cheating.

On my LR converted BW, its in the up position, as thats the way it models bste. Standard BW will probably have it down. And measuring will be consistant for each model.
