Awesome stuff Dark! What medium do you use? I like your faces a lot!

And as for nickmund, I next to never finish a drawing.

Thanks a lot.

I sketch with an HB mechanical pencil and ink my lines with a drip pen and sometimes also with a brush. When it comes to colours I use either markers or Photoshop.

It could be down to the scan rate, I tend to scan mine at stupidly hight DPI (like 1000 some times), once in digital form, chuck it into your prefered Image Editing programme and smoth it ot in there, ever by using Gerasan blur or the digital pixel removal tool. Then save as a Jpeg (i know it needn't be said but it is the best file for when your throwing it around the net).

That's a bloody nice Eldar you got there.

Also, you suffer from "good anatomy and proportions", thus the Burna looks quite like a hummie.

Post by: nickmund

ace that burner boy is cool the perspective on the gun is realy good
i like all the detail on the eldar too
i find eldar are one of the hardest races to draw

Post by: grob the immortal grot

That's the problem with biro. I can remember thinking oh crap the heads to small, he looks a bit human, and if you try to do anything to make it better you just ruin the piece.

I agree with you Nickmund, although I myself find spacey notoriously hard to draw, but thats just me.

Block colours, multiple lays and knowing how to short cut stuff You did most of the hard work i just sort of did a paint by numers job on it then aplyed some fade colour soft light layers. Some times doing less helps it to look like more.

Know that this is just my opinion and I respect yours if it's different but I have a personal heavy distaste for anime warhammer. I don't have a problem with anime but I don't believe that it makes good bedfellows with 40k. Something about it making the mood of it far too light. Not bad work in here though.

Post by: Fafnir

The main problem the lot of you have is that your drawings look quite flat. I would imagine that you don't draw a 'skeleton' first, right? Well, that causes your anatomy to become warped, and also inhibits your ability to add depth to the image, since you don't have a concrete point of reference for the exact positioning of each body part.

It's a mistake many new artists make, and it's something that you should really address. It'll improve your drawings dramatically. Just practice starting with a 'skeleton,' and work your way up to a frame, and then finally to the finished character. A little perspective goes a long way.

40k drawings and stuff @ 2010/08/26 08:24:14

Post by: grob the immortal grot

Ribon fox that is so cool!
I really like the way it adds drama to it!

And in responce to fafnir, I may try that, maybe.

Edit: hahahahah lol lol lol
On my space marine the big scroll goes to the spaceys left side, while all the purity seals and stuff flows to the right side. slow!

40k drawings and stuff @ 2010/08/26 10:39:35

Post by: Ribon Fox

Perpective like this? Three horizon points four vanishing points and a page of math.

Skelatal work like these?

I can render as seen but I like the clean simple lines that Anime can give you.

Also how about long distance stuff?

I do my "skeletons" as well, what's more, I draw the muscles (had 2 years of anatomy when I studied SFX) and only then I draw the clothes and/or armours on them.

Thanks, and I generally work digitally. Sometimes I do pencils and scan as well, but not as much. I can block out ideas a lot quicker on my tablet.

As for who wins, hopefully I can make it an interesting battle

Thanks for the praise(and trust me I am trying to find work in those areas ), but don't put down your own work, just keep at it. It takes a lot of work, time, and practice. Don't ever think you know it all (like I did when I was in college, lol!), and just try to keep learning. Also, doing art every day helps

I happen to have one of those tablets. Next I need to find software and some tutorials for slow kids like me. My wife put something on my computer called "gimp" I belive it's open source software, so the price was right. I don't know if it's any good. I've messed around with it but have no idea what I'm doing.

@Glimpse The Void: I'm glad I came on this thread, I'm posting this for everyone but I'll PM GTV in case he doesn't come back to this.

For the truley dedicated CGI stills artist: POV-ray http://www.povray.org/

For those of you who are interested in something more...animated? Blender http://www.blender.org/

This is a much simpler one for those of us like warboss spinetwizta who casually play around in Paint and Gimp: Gifsicle http://www.lcdf.org/gifsicle/

If anyone has any casual questions about using the GTK+ Library I can help there to, but this is more of a hobby for me and I have never finished a project with it.

EDIT: This is all open source by the way, and all of it will work on windows platforms (although of the three of them it's ironic that Gifsicle takes the most work to do so) so feel free to go nuts.

1st thing for a digital artist is definitely a tablet of some sort. I have the Wacom Cintiq 12wx, as I have a terrible time working on those tablets you draw on and look at the screen.

Second would be a graphics application. I personally use and prefer photoshop. You can probably find an older version for cheap, not to mention there are "other" ways to get photoshop. However, there are other apps like Painter, Painttool SAI, Gimp, OpenCanvas, ArtRage... all have their good points.

After that, find some digital painting tutorials online to watch and learn, get ImagineFX magazine (lots of good tutorials, etc). Always keep your eyes open for new techniques you can try and learn from.

Also, I have a quandary. What would be a good opponent for a spartan AND a space marine?

Amazing, what tools did you use to create this ?

My idea of what Sly Marbo looks like:

Chilling in a tree, keeping his eyes on a group of catachan moving below him through the jungle.

And I dont know if this guy is 40k, but I began drawing him and then it went a little in the way of a Vostroyan Firstborn. Without a moustache.

I drew both in Photoshop Cs4, using basic body shapes that you can find online. I use them as armatures so to speak, the rest is all drawn by myself.

Thanks, and I generally work digitally. Sometimes I do pencils and scan as well, but not as much. I can block out ideas a lot quicker on my tablet.

As for who wins, hopefully I can make it an interesting battle

I'm guessing you have a very bad ass character concept for the Spartan, but I honestly can't see how it'd be anything close to a fair fight... Spartan level weaponry wouldn't even be able to scratch power armor >_>

/facepalm

I went on your site earlier and you only had the first 3 pictures up... I saw Spartan vs Space Marine and tho you mean those spartans.... who while cool, certainly wouldn't stand a chance.

This now makes a lot more sense.

Very nice work.

This thread isn't too old so its better to post here rather than start a new thread.

I finally got around to drawing some 40k fan art, but I have to warn you all it has a touch of heresy and it might I don't think it dose but it might rape the fluff just a little.

Its the Scout Sargent for my Fox Scouts (aka space wolves scouts) its a work in progress

spoiler just in case its too much heresy for some people, C&C is always welcome

`I'm loving those orks.

I have a picture in the "freezer" that I did at work/class some time ago, but I need to find first what the marines that serve ont he Wolfguard have on their left shoulder pad, as it's blank at the moment.

Great stuff here

I'll scan some stuff and add it pretty soon. I'm working the kinks out of my 40k comic.
