Recently on a thread in the background section a fairly large group of Dakkites and I work out alot of the details of a SM chapter I have been dreaming about for more than a few years. If you want all of the background take a trip over here---> http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/310304.page <---- and let me know any ideas you may have.
Allow me to introduce you to the two newest (and only ) Members of the Emperor's Shields Space Marine Chapter!
Vanguard Veteran Sergeant VIGNORIS
Chapter Master to be named later
As always Constructive criticism is always welcome. I'm not doing any massive conversions yet mostly just kit bashes to get the feel I'm looking for and from there I plan on expanding into more areas.
Make sure you head over to the background thread to see some of the concept art done by the amazing vignor.

The arm on the chapter master that is at his side should be holding a spear close to the tip, and resting the wooden shaft along the back of his arm.

They are from Scibor. I'm really glad I got the heads. The torsos were a bit of a letdown but I will eventually find a use for them. I am eventually going to get some more bits from other places for these guys. I need to get a TON of sang guard torsos. I am going to try and get the whole army with them! May not work out that way

Shouldnt the Chapter Master have the biggest plumes? Like in 300, Leonidas had the biggest (plume, you perverts).

Funny pretty sure I heard something mentioned in my history seminars about Romans and Greeks adding plumes to their helmets too, lol, just messing. They look great and I really look forward to seeing more Son's of Ares and the Son's of Sparta (I think those are the names I will check) are two similarly themed armies that you may want to have a look at.

Or you could do helmet-colour-codin'. But the plume is a better idea. Blue = normal marine Blue + red stripes = assault marine (unless your whole army is assault marine) Blue + green = Devastators Red = Commander Just a few quick thoughts.. took me about 30 seconds .

Post by: tony_nids_10
@void- It will prob end up being a mix of the two
@Lennysmash- No worries, I know I'm not the first person to do this idea. Thankfully I had the help of a great group of people to give me a hand coming up with ideas and such.

Agree here... It doesn't feel right when the first guy have a lot bigger plume than the CM (What was his name again? Achilles? Odysseus?). Plumes equals power!

Also take a look at Urban Wars Junkers range these may also hold some inspiration for you.

Very cool start 'Nids, I suggest lots of "power" spears and short gladius styled swords (sorry if this was gone over in the background thread I was too lazy to read it) I don't mean to be a casting pusher but have you thought about casting the torsos so you will have enough? Its what I ended up having to do for my Sabre Legion.

Hahaha Thank you Mr.nids for placing me into the ranks..and as for different colored plumes i think is a wonder full idea and i like Mr.voids idea of the mixes but my only suggestion to that is don't use blue in the color scheme!!! remember our primarch hates robute...well to me he hates girlyman anyway haha...and for the plume idea the bigger the plume the higher the rank i dont care to much for that cause it reminds me of where i live the bigger the mullet the more white trash you are lololol but i think the commander should have a unique plume to himself..and what bigmek said about the inqusitor emblem just green stuff it til it looks like a Trojan shield...

Well I may be opening a can of worms here but...
I have a Sabre Legion marine for Great Marine Swap ready for you, he would have been in the post already but I haven't finished his backpack and my 40skaven have recently taken up all my modelling time.
Excuses aside I was wondering if you have a design in mind for a shield?
The reason I say shield is I don't think the chestplate I did for my Sabre Legion are quite right for your chapter, they are less breastplate than naked chest but I could do sculpt a shield for you, make up a mould, cast a few and sent the mould and casts to you with the GMS marine?
Just a thought, not sure if you are up to that point yet or even if you want to do a "spartan" type shield at all. It mainly comes to mind because it would be relatively easy to sculpt and cast
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
Personally I don't think that the shields should be the same though. SM are more of a band of heroes than an army of soldiers, as such they are equipped in a different manner to formations such as the Imperial Guard. I think individual shield designs or heraldries should be used to add a little bit more character to your army. I think a more Athenian concept rather than an Spartan concept would give you the individuality you want. Black hand it could be an idea to sculpt two of three blank shields of different sizes though. This would represent the natural progression that all armour and wargear goes through. It would further emphasise that fact that these shields were honoured artefacts and not just a bulk order from AdeptusMechcanicus.com.

Post by: BLACKHAND
"Athenian" meaning a group of heroic warriors instead of a squad of soldiers? I could always make a "blank" shield with no heraldic device which would allow Tony_nids to freehand personal devices on the shields for each warrior. Edit : I really don't mean to hijack your thread though Nids! sorry!
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
No sorry I didn't make my self clear, the concept of Sm as a band of rank and file soldiers I think is disappearing these days thanks largely to the BL novels. Personally I see each marine as one of the Imperium's greatest heroes, as such I think the concept of individuals fighting as a whole is better than the IG idea of a sea of faceless/nameless billions. The Athenian concept was more to do with the shield design, since each man eligible to fight was required to supply his own wargear shields were decorated in a more personal and stylised way, depicting favoured gods or heroes. My point is that it would renforce the idea of individual heroes fighting as one. Automatically Appended Next Post: If you go with the Greek style just remember the hoplite shield is big bad not the little sissy shields from warhammer that I used. I made some progress today while taking care of the wife (pulled tooth- OUCH!) Tore the head off of the chapter master and decided that the body was rubbish. Also sat down and made a chainspear- I like how it looks so far but we shall see. Also I started the process of cutting up the BA special character Sanguinor, Exemplar of the Host to make him fit into my squad as a squad leader for the assault squad or the counts as sanguinary guard. Not sure what one yet. I will have pics as soon as I find the camera. I need some serious input on the chain-spear once I get the pics up.

Hello again friends! I had 3 packages waiting for me when I went to visit family at my mothers house recently. Package A and B were the DKoK and 3 superheavy tanks as well as 4 other smaller tanks and the big ol' Apoc hardcover. The third package was considerably smaller but I wont lie I was WAY more excited to see that one! Inside, as promised was a multitude of custom made bits from none other than BLACKHAND himself! Included in this mini box of wonders were shields- for obvious uses! Arms to hold the shields and some minotaur shoulderpads for yet another project I have been toying with for some time now, I'll get to that later. I know what you are thinking, was there more in the box?! YES! Mr. HAND even sent along the moulds for the 2 styles of shields (yes there are 2) the arms and the pads! I know what you are thinking, was there more in the box?! YES! Mr. HAND even sent along the moulds for the 2 styles of shields (yes there are 2) the arms and the pads! I can not tell you how excited I am to get some assembly going and to at last get some pics up!
I leave for school, been gone a month, and you're ordering Forge World stuff?! What else am I missing out on?! I demand pictures ASAP. And I'm tagging this thread so I can follow it. Hoping to see some good stuff man

Let me know what you think. I promise that it looks a bit more dynamic in person!
Also I have started a minor side project involving the 21st founding. With the help of BLACKHAND I have the shoulderpads for the first member of the Minotaurs chapter! I'm going to be making a squad or so of each chapter for fun. Here is a look at the first marine with the custom shoulderpad!

Now before anyone goes and yells at me here are the pictures I owe you!
First the tanks I got in!
Needs to be stripped
Overcompensation
I like the rust on this one
Stubby
Strip it down and fix the non-existent gun and Rusty will be good as new!
Bane
Storm
Hell
On to the DKoK! There are a bunch not pictured because they are not fully assembled or not on bases.
Some medium fire power!

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! USE SANGUINARY GUARD WINGS or BUY FROM PAULSON GAMES --- RAAARGH (and wait for the libby dread conversion kit they're working on for the dread!)
Sanguinor could just be the chapter master who has been fighting for ~2000 years (maybe they have stupidly extended lives like the BA.. except more stupid! YAY) and whoever is affected with all the +1 rules could just be the same model each game who could be "The Master's Champion".

26877
Post by: tony_nids_10
@Darkvoid- The lower legs are bulked out already. The upper legs are still being worked on. There will be wires and tubes abound.
@Vignor- The width of the shoulders on said linebacker are going to get trimmed. Right now they are just for shape. I just always hated how the dreads look like walking refridgerators (sp?) Also i use the term "walking" loosely since they seem like they might waddle like penguins or pregnant women. I may scrap the legs all together and make mr. dread- not to be confused with the judge of the same name- into a tracked unit... Maybe. Thoughts?

Oh yeah, thanks by the way! I'm also planning on working on some rules (ie FANDEX) as I've already got one codex under my belt.. watch this space.

Slightly revised front cover.. not a great deal of difference. Oh well. Tell me what y'all think of it.
Also, I can't help but notice that Vignoris based most of his drawings on Red Scorpion models - some of which I will hopefully use to convert some Emperor's Shields or, more likely, Paragons of Faith.

@Ash- The basic idea for this chapter was something I've wanted to do for a long time but it has taken on a life of its own amongst some loyal dakkaites. Without the help of these guys here and the same guys plus a handfull more on the fluff thread I would never be able to find the ambition to keep working on it. Between the neverending supply of ideas and Vig's amazing art I am never at a loss for help. Long story short Ash, feel free to help any way you want.

Well I'll be damned. I've just figured out how Vig draws his stuff. Now tell me if I'm right here, Vig, but did you print out images of Forgeworld Red Scorpions, trace for the most part and then add your own touches (like the Shields' iconography)?
Might have to try me some of that..

There basically red scorpions yes ive got to use a model but trace no i didn't... ...cause i cant draw an accurate space marine out the top of my head but i love the cover hehehe
im drawing a primarch and a pre heresy dreads....and i think the MK IV MAXIMUS ARMOUR fits the shields very very very well

Well I am waiting for my fiance's new camera should be in sometime in late november... Until then all I can give are some verbal updates. The 1st dreads custom arm is mostly done, complete with new hand! I'm working on the other arm now. The treads are still a WIP and are moving along (slowly) I am still waiting for my second AoBR dread to make its way to me so I can start work on the other dread. I am really trying to make something slightly unique here without going too far over the top. I'm a big fan of conversions that are tasteful.

Hey dude, I hear ya. I'd like to get the tedious job of painting my models outta the way, but life gets in the way and has done for a good long while.
So just forget about the little spacemans for awhile and go sort out your problems if possible - they won't mind sharing a cardboard box in the corner of your room/attic for [insert length of time necessary].
In all seriousness, I hope your issues get fixed and things take a turn for the better Tony, cause life hasn't been treating you too good recently. Good luck pal.

Ok heres the deal. In the last 3 months I have lost my Grandmother, almost lost my 1 year old son, and my closest friend in the world past away. He was the reason I got into 40k in the first place and without him around it really just feels hollow. I don't have it in me anymore to do any of this and I'm sorry. I will be selling off EVERYTHING I own that is even remotely hobby related so please if you are interested let me know so I can send pics or otherwise make arrangements. I really appreciate all of the help with everything from all of you. If anyone is interested in taking over the Emperor's Shields by all means feel free and DO NOT forget about all the amazing people on this thread and the other one located in my signature. these guys are completely invaluable and none of this would have been even remotely possible without their support. Thanks again guys and gals.

I did keep a few of the more important items to my cause. I'm also going to trade a few specialized units for a bit of tattoo work. Thankfully geeks have day jobs too. Makes me wish we used a barter system more often in real life.
Either way I'm putting a little faith into my dread to kick start things again for me. I'll try and get some pics at some point of the minimal progress.... I swear there will be a real update at some point.

I made some progress on my dreads! I finished what will be the base for the new quad legs on Dread Alpha and I am finishing up the "thighs" on Dread Omega. I am currently without a camera at the moment so pictures are a little difficult to come by. If I cant get a replacement soon I will just take some pictures with my phone so at least there will be something to look at Sorry for the shabby update but it's the best I can do at the moment. On a side not I was wondering if anyone had any AoBR marines/terminators/dreads? A good friend sent me a few in the mail a few weeks ago and I have to admit it brightened my day greatly. I had forgotten they were on the way and when I got home and saw a box waiting for me on the table with a magic marker purity seal on it I almost jumped for joy! Wow I get off topic easily... sorry about that Anyway, if you have any of those three items up for trade or sale let me know! I've finally got my financial issues cleared up so I now have some money to work with!

Something that isn't quite yellow or sand and not quite bone either, perhaps. I've always envisioned their home world as a dusty barren landscape of orange sand, with sandstorms whirling everywhere. Post by: tony_nids_10
@Void- You mean the PM that doesn't work because of the lack of code I don't even think I fixed it on the other thread
Here is the background info though...
Background/fluff
As for the fluff on Atrum Inritus I mentioned earlier, I'm thinking of something like Tzeentch took interest in him, turning its will upon his mortal mind. Though he resisted, refusing with all his might, he could not hope to stand up to the might of Tzeentch. Jedediah Storm, Chief Librarian, hastily erected wards and chanted powerful incantations of purity and righteousness. With this new power, Atrum found within himself the inner-strength to shrug-off the call of the Ruinous Powers. However, there was a small part of him that was curious at the power that could be gained.. curious of what it would be like to serve only himself. Tzeentch, capricous and unknowable, decided to take that part of Atrum's mind, and made it physical. A copy of Atrum, bolstered by dark power to insane levels, who was completely against everything The Original stood for. These two identical yet so different beings, one holy, one not, fought a titanic battle before the entire third company. Though Atrum had much courage, his "twin" had been born with the strength of the warp. A killing blow would merely slow him down; a hit from him felt like an Autocannon. Atrum could not win, and was cast down, his body ravaged and severely damaged. Yet still he fought on, firing with pistol in hand as a last defiant act of faith. But as quickly as it had been born, the copy was whisked away by eldritch powers. Despite that near-fatal conflict, Atrum refused to be interred into a Dreadnought, insisting he was not badly wounded enough. Though it took many months, he eventually returned back to fighting-form. Though he had suffered dearly in the ordeal with his "copy", he came out of it - his faith had been tested to the utmost and he had not been found wanting. Although it pained him to say it, Tzeentch had actually helped him. It had removed all doubt about his faith, about the Emperor. About Mankind's manifest destiny to rule the universe. The very thing that sought to corrupt him had made him uncorruptable.
Company layout idea's
Also, I'm thinking that perhaps the company lay out is like this:
First Company - Veteran company - The Astartans - ~300 Space Marines - Captain Garus
Second Company - Battle company - The Kings of War - ~100 Space Marines - Captain Asherian
Third Company - Battle company - The Incorruptable - ~100 Space Marines Captain Inritus
Fourth Company - Battle company - ??? - ~100 Space Marines - Captain ???
Fifth "
Sixth "
Seventh - armoured company - The Ironhides - Assortment of Heavy armour - Captain ???
Basically, not giving two about the little blue book. One extra large Veteran company - allowing for 6 Elite choices in-game - Battle companies - no effect in-game - Seventh and eighth company - Armoured companies - Allows for 6 Heavy support choices - Nineth and Tenth companies - Scout companies - in-game effect: something to do with Scout Captain Bi'Mek, perhaps? Or maybe two scout squads for every 1 Troop slot.
All that allows for a very elite, very stealthy, or very heavy playstyle. Perhaps, as an army special rule, when making an army list you can choose to either double your number of elites or heavy support slots?
And perhaps, there are no assault squads, as such, but any Tactical squad may replace its standard armament of a boltgun (they shouldn't have pistols! They never did before!) with a CCW and Bolt pistol, and they may also take Jump packs, and if they do then they become Fast Attack.
So potentially we could see a Scout, Tank and Veteran heavy army forming from all this.
@Ironfront- I would probably like it if i could see it Automatically Appended Next Post: @Ironfront- I do like it but like most of this project I am leaving it up to the people reading to pick a good one.
