New mobile GW Painting Station, cutting mat and monster transport case @ 2010/09/22 23:01:46

Post by: Kroothawk

Hi,
on 30th October, GW will release a new plastic painting station. It can be seen on the monthly release poster in your FLGS or GW store. It is black, slightly smaller than the current wooden one, on small stilts, with carvings for about a dozen paints, brushes and two water cups and priced 26€. Has grips, as it is meant as a mobile painting station in contrast to the other wooden one.

Already on 2nd October, there will be a rerelease of the mega-paint set:

I found this to be funny. What is this 'Monthly Release Poster' that you speak of? I order 2-4 times a week from GW, and haven't seen something like that in years.

I get my news the same way everyone else does: when it goes up on the website.

The wooden station also has grips mind you.

I think we've come to grips with the grips.
Stilts! Stilts are the future mind you!

Well last month I trashed my wood one since it was taking to much space, its not a pratical thing to store around, so I guess I will skip the plastic one also.
Why the full set of paints is limited? I would probably end up getting one later in the future, but all this limited thing will simply stop me of doing that.

The "Limited" thing is purely a psychological sales push. Buy now, enjoy the profits and no regrets later, that's what they are going after.

I hope so, Im kind of a sucker for shiny & packed full paint sets, just dont want to buy them now in a hurry.

Instant commitment. Plus it does save you a few quid buying them all at once. Can't wait for my one to get here! Mmmmm! Every paint I need. Until they run out :(

Actually, not counting the sand and static grasses, you save a pretty respectable £53!

Even better, I managed to squeak mine in with discount. Wahey!

What do you need a paint station for? can't you just throw your paints and brushes and models and bitz all over your desk in a big messy pile like the real painters do?

I'd imagine he's referring to a GW hobby center where if I'm not mistaken they do in fact have monthly poster ads.

Isn't 26Euro kind of expensive? I can't see myself paying more than $35-$40 for a product like this.

That's the way my desk is now The reason I want one is because I'll have another little girl soon, compile that with the fact that I work from home...I want to get away from my desk a bit So, having that paint station so I can work on stuff while spending time with the family is nice. That and my desk was expensive and I've absolutely ruined it with Jewelers Saws, glue, files and exacto knives

It also has to do with production runs. It is far easier/profitable to schedule a run of 2000 paint sets once a year. Order 2000 foam specially cut, allocate 2000 figure cases, allocate 2000 of each paint pot, tool, brush, etc. Have them all shipped to where they get assembled, then put them on pallets and ship them out to the various countries.
The mega paint set traditionally sells good in the holiday season, and not as well the rest of the year. They make a bunch, and then they run out. They make more the next year.

$40? Are you kidding me? I'll either stick with my $5 wooden tray:

(and they come bigger than that, still under $10.

This may be a paint station, but not a painting station which is a structured working place not a paint rack. As a paint rack, I prefer this: http://www.paintier.com/ . And the wooden painting station is quite handy to transform my computer working place into my hobby working place.

BTW can't find the wooden painting station on the GW website, so this may be a substitute for it.

Try picking everything up and putting it on a shelf every time you step away so that little hands don't get into your paint.

Had a closer look at the poster.

1.) The mobile painting station is labelled "the new painting station", perhaps indicating that it replaces the old wooden one that I can't find anymore on the GW website. It has a working platform and indentations for two rows for paints behind it (1st row 8 paints, 2nd row 9), flanked by one indentation on each side for the GW brush holding water reservoir. It looks a tad smaller than the wooden one, but certainly not as small as the one on this pic http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1380166a_WD_lg.jpg . The stilts are more arcs but serve the same purpose.

2.) Also released on 30th October will be a cutting mat with a centimeter (I assume) grid, some arcs and a slightly ergonomic outer shape. Retail 7.80 € .

3.) Also released on 30th October is an extra deep "monster" miniature transport case. This one while supply lasts. Retail 65.- €

It's the weird thing about GW: they're the only company that actually puts out a good value paint set. I added up the Reaper Master paint sets, and you basically get a small discount on the case. The Mega Paint set includes a lot of crap I don't need, but I'm not paying for.

I already have way too many paints, but I still covet it.

GW have to make it a really good deal. Given how poorly their paints keep in the current pots odds are that you'll be throwing half of the paint away.

Do you mean the new pots that are similar to the foundation paints?

Because they do not have a lip for paint to spill onto, and are very good at keeping the paint.

No, the current pots for normal paints - I find that after 6-9 months the paints are useless. The screw pots kept fairly well but if you got paint on the threads then they could be impossible to open. The old pots were great, they would keep for years and years.

Yeah, I have a garage, but that's where my cars go.

I actually picked up Vallejo styled paint pots and transferred several of my GW paints into those. I don't like the flip tops and it makes things quite difficult to pour GW paint into an airbrush. I like the GW Foundation Paints but the rest of my paint purchases will be Vallejo.

The paint racks don't really solve that problem. When there are kids in the house you really need to be able to pick up paint, glue, tools, water & the models being worked on in one go so that they can be easily stashed out of reach.

Paint stations like the GW one (or the many generic ones that are virtually identical and half the price) do that nicely.

I'm still buying random little purchases of paint though.. I just bought like four paints...gah. Whatever, more paint for me when I actually get the set

And finally! I can use a wash brush! I've never even glanced at one until now. What makes them so different from a regular brush? are they made of really permeable fibers or something?

I'm the parental unit in my house (or one of them), but the other parental unit stopped me from opening it until christmas day last year because she "paid for it" or something?

I got last years one and was really pleased with it. Despite having various pots of GW and others paint from the last 20 odd years this really was a great deal and has organised my hobby area no end. Just being able to close the case and put it away is endlessly helpful with grabby fingers in the house.

No more will they/won't they be usable games mid painting session for me, not for a few months at least if the above reviews of GW paint are to be believed.

BE warned though when they say limited edition on the Mega Paint Set they mean it. I really lucked out last year and got what seemed like the last one on the Web. GW eventually found one a week later and I would have happily paid full whack if they called a week earlier!

Some very interesting sounding items on that list... Not to drag this off topic, but new Lizardmen? Awesome.

Yes, it actually is. I start a new thread on that with the few information currently available.

Well, doesn't fit into this thread, but Talos, Haemunculi and slave girls are marked as not new but "active", i.e. already released.

Ah, I see. There was a picture of a guy using what looks to be a new painting station... Here ya go:

Or is that just a wood one sprayed black?

Yes, it is just the old one painted black. The other one looks quite different

iv got the smallest desk in the world yet i manage to play my computer games on it and paint. I just dont see the need to have so much gear in front of you at all times. I just pull what i need out of a box next to me.

Besides, Iv learned that GW tools are usually over priced and someone always sells something bigger, better and cheaper somewhere else.

The paint set I wont even look at. But I dont like GW paints. Much prefer Vallejo and Reaper.

If GW are selling something other then a mini, I dont touch it.

Here finally a pic of the paint station, the (fitting) mat and the new monster figure case (posted by Frgt/19). Still not on preorder 20 days before the release.

That paint station looks very fragile, specially for using the cutting mat with a xacto blade, its going to be a mess

AUD$138 to carry one super heavy. I guess GW understands that there is a market for foam and carry cases, they don't don't understand how this market works,

I'll be getting one of those new paint stations, it perfectly fits in with what I need. My original wooden GW one is too big for my current desk where I live, and this one seems perfect for painting in front of the tv. However, I seem to find that NZ$65 is about £30? This seems pretty pricey...

The vast majority of units (in 40k) is fielded in multiples of 10, yet they release a figurecase with 9 models by 4 models inserts. I just don't get it.

Yep it has bugged me from the beginning but there are alternatives to it out there

The problem with the GW Monster Figure Case is the same as with their other cases. The shell and foam are terrific and sturdy but the hinges and latches are frail and notoriously difficult to repair. When they break you're left with a very expensive but useless transport case. I wouldn't mind the price of the cases if the longevity on the hinges and latches was more reliably lengthy, but that is not the case and they've made no move to change or improve them in spite of the numerous broken ones out there and complaints due to same.

I'll stick with my Plano 1404 cases for large models, they fit two Baneblades side by side or two Brass Scorpions, etc., they are inexpensive and the latches and hitches are sturdy.

Actually GW cases are nothing more than standard protective cases for video-equipment etc, with an outer shell that is made according to the wishes of GW. And they are way cheaper when bought in specialist video stores and the hinges are better.

The new paint station is a huge leap backwards.

Judging by the pics above I can see some pretty major design flaws in the new paint rack and also the cutting matt.

The paint rack has those 2 curves on the underside, which makes me think it's supposed to be something you can put on your lap?

If this is true then the first issue is the wideness of the round parts is way too narrow to fit on a real gamer's lap, and not only that but they won't be able to keep their legs closed that tightly long enough for it to be practical. On top of that, the curve in the front of the tray and the cutting matt is way too small to accommodate our over inflated bellies.

I can see several new gaming related injury threads started if people use this thing for cutting while it's on their laps. It'll only be a mistake you make once anyway.

Don't know if you can use the paint station as a "lap top", but in that case it is scaled for skinny British kids, not "heroic scale" Americans, who can't see beyond their inbuild paint rack anyway

hehe

I am one of the aforementioned "skinny british kids"
The tray looks nice, although I'm slightly worried by the possibility of one's legs moving underneath it, or spilling something on your lap and leaping up, only to throw your £20 forge world model against the wall, shattering it...

That said, I don't have enough free cash to buy one, and I'm perferctly happy with my serving tray paint station

If you slip whilst using that cutting mat on that paint station and using a sharp knife, it might turn out to be a rather nasty failure for GW's future customer base..

Realistically, no one is going to do the bulk of their cutting or painting with the tray in their lap and I'm sure GW people know that. The point of a photo like that is to show that it's possible to use it that way where it might be handy to do so.

The tray: meh! At least it's got spots specifically designed to hold their other products, and let's face it, if you're buying this, you're probably already using their paints and brushes and everything else.

The case: GW's cases are not only poor quality, but seem to have gotten worse over the years. While it's nice to see GW realizing the need for a bigger case, for that kind of price there are far better options to protect my big expensive gak.

I've never had an issue with a GW case being poor quality. I rather like ones I've gotten, and of the five I have, none has ever broken or even looked like it was going to.

None of mine are broken either, but my son has several broken latches and a broken hinge. And as I've previously stated I see broken hinges and latches all over the place regularly. The first time I inquired about it at the store years ago the employee admitted to me that he saw that problem all the time. It's a common problem, extremely common. For those saying this is not a problem they have first been lucky and second not been paying attention to all the other people's cases with broken latches and hinges when they visit the store.

Personally, I have one small GW case that's about 12 years old and is still in great shape. That said, the reason I only have one is because any time I've looked to buy a new one I've changed my mind after playing around with it. The last time this happened was when they released the red and green large cases. The latches on five of the six cases I checked out fell open without any pressure. All it took to have them flop open was their own meagre weight. While I don't often pick up a case by the back, that's just completely unacceptable in a case that's supposed to protect some pretty expensive stuff.

Just for completeness: here the link http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=&prodId=prod990078a&_requestid=198423 and the last pic.
It is not as sturdy as the old one but more adapted to mobility (weight), as for taking it with you on tourneys/conventions for last time/spare time paint jobs. Not sure if I like the working platform be 1.5" above table level, but I am fine with my old wooden paint station. Too bad they discontinued it.

yeah,
Who bases their marines and then paints the gold and silver trims?... And leaving a brush head down in water is a crime....

not sure about the raised paint level...I too like my old paint station, I might buy a extra now as a long run replacement...

painting while watching tv might be fun though.

I've tended to paint in that possition in the past, don't do it kids, I have very serious neck issues these days! Any one think GW may be in a bad place to get sued for such an ergonomically dangerous piece of kit?

New mobile GW Painting Station, cutting mat and monster transport case @ 2010/10/16 13:45:31

@Panic: those paint cups are designed to hold the brishes tip down without having the bristles resting on the bottom, or ideally even in the water unless you filled them too much. That said I'm not paying $5 for a damn plastic cup

The paint station is nice with the sole exception of the hight. I was thinking of maybe picking one up but I don't plan on painting in my lap (a terrible distance to paint a model from anyways) and it seams like it would be uncomfortable to rest your hands on since the actual work area doesn't appear all that large.

As for the GW cases, I musta lucked out, my one and only GW case works fine after 9 years, though I've seen many (some brand new) with loose hinges. Biggest problem remains that they're only good for standard infantry sized models, even terminators don't fit withuot lots of cuts, and there's much better alternatives especially in foam inserts (my space wolves currently occupy said case but in battlefoam trays)

I also see problems when having the tray on the table. With the old one I could put it on the table and there was only a slight hight-difference. With the new one there are several inches of hight difference, so you have a small extra-desk on your table.

I made this in about 30 minutes on Saturday. I already had the materials but I'd say the cost of them would have come to about 10% of the price of GW's one. There's no point in paying for stuff like this imo.
