So i decided that i wanted to do a deathwing force for my return to 40k, i used to game way back in 2nd edition and had a lot of rogue trader white dwarfs. I was always a fan of the original black dark angels so decided to go for that. The infantry will be entirely termies and led by Belial, in support i will have ven dreads, whirlwinds and predators.
I picked up a box of termies, a ven dread and a whirlwind on friday to make a start, here is my first deathwing trooper so you can see the scheme complete with urban base. you can see the grey highlights alot better IRL, all comments and crit welcome, what do you think, back in black or do you prefer white lol
thanks for looking

I'd prefer white actually since it's so much more eye-catching than black, but your sergeant looks great anyway. Needs more grime though.

Post by: Lennysmash
If you prefer the Black go for it. One thing is for sure it will be be a very striking force.
I personally prefer a darker feel to DA forces anyway so I shall watch this with great interest.
All the best and keep up the good work.

Yeah he does look to clean, he will get grime when either a) i can find my powders or b) i go and buy some new powders lol

Not a massive update but i have done another terminator and have now decided black is the way forward with these, next up is an assualt cannon termie, ill probably post again when ive done the whole squad ( but knowing me when ive done the next termie lol ). after this squad i think ill do the whirlwind and dread last.

Post by: Lennysmash
Good choice CL, the darker feel fits the DA a lot better I think, it really helps to embody the idea of the DA as a dark secretive brotherhood of warrior monks.
Might be cool to import some of the Deathwing heraldries into your miniatures, also maybe the red helmet stripe of the Consecrators chapter might be something you want to think about. After all they took the livery of their parent chapter at their founding.
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Thanks, i like the darker feel aswell. I was thinking about the red stripe, im not sure yet though. I think ill get the squad painted and take it from there, i am trying to keep paint time to a minimum as i want to get gaming as quick as possible. I will go back when i have a 1500pt force done and then i can add additional details.

Good progress CL, though I still think you need to add some personal touches to the models to get them from generic black terminators to honoured individual battle brothers.
On another note have you glued any of the arms to either your dread or terminators?
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Thanks, the terminators arms are glued, the dreads are not however. There will be a few termie squads and they will all have a variety of weapons. I have meshed out my 1500pt list so they have all the options i picked for it.
*edit* on another note, i will be getting the new stormraven that was leaked as soon as released it will be mine oh yes
20739
Post by: Lennysmash
Haha, I predict a few people with a similar intent.
As for your next batch of terminators can I suggest you seriously look into magnets for the arms, especially if you are planning on picking up assault terminators. You double the options for your force.
Check a few of this guys videos for inspiration.
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
I had not considered magnets before but ill look into it, i was going to do 4 lightning claws and a heavy flamer for the cc squad, but the option to switch to thunder hammers would be good, about the extra detail, i will go back when the 1500pt force is done,as its deathwing there are not many troops to do so shouldnt be a problem

Thanks! at the moment its just going to be a deathwing force, however, when i have the initial 1500pts i may consider doing some marines. if i do they will be black aswell but i will probably end up doing a few more terminator squads and another land raider then start a different army but i wouldnt rule out the odd forgeworld marine squad popping up lol

Nice work on the whirlwind, the weathering poweder worked very well (may I ask which one you used?) The top of the tank seems to be lacking a little, I think you need a small patch of colour adding. Perhaps make the lenses on the hatch a bright blue (or just make the green lighter).
Once again, nice freehand details!

Love the weathering on the whirlwind, looks like they were landing on a moonscape or something hunting some Fallen. I also love the pre-bonewhite scheme you're using. I've been debating it myself since it's A. Easier, and B. seen much less often.
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
@ commander cain, thanks. I see what your saying but i picture the support vehicles that way, when i have done the next one and the two are together they should compliment each other. We will see and cookie for you if you were right lol. The powder was forgeworld ash for the dust and smoke for the petrochem exhaust.
@ warpetrie, thanks
@ dodcrazy, thanks, i prefer the black look as there are very few bone schemes i like, plus it would take me years to do an army in bone lol and i want to get gaming

Ok so my internet is back on!!!!
I have not had much time for painting due to christmas and now having EPIC MAN FLU!!!!!! however my belial counts as is done.
Introducing Master Uriel, Scourge of the Fallen and reaper of the Kazor Space hulk, Keepr of the Lions Claw and general badass
and rather poor shot of the awesome huron power claw!
free internet cookies for whoever guess's the complete parts list if nobody guesses ill just tell you anyway lol. a bit of gs work went into it aswell.
The claw will count as the sword of secrets for gaming purposes, i just couldnt resist using it! I will also be doing the fluff at somepoint too. on the workbench at the moment is a cc termie squad so expect to see them sometime soon hopefully if i can get rid of my EPIC MAN FLU!
comments would be great as im rather chuffed and would like to know what you do and dont like about it

I have always much preferred Dark Angels in black, never was a fan of either the dark green or bone white and this army just reinforces my opinion of that.
The army is coming together very nicely, an all Termi army appeals to me too, I was going to go down the Space Wolf route and do a Wolf Wing, but now I am considering Dark Angels....
I also think the use of Huron's power claw is inspired as it fits Dark Angels perfectly, and your Belial Conversion is fantastic.
I love the Whirlwind too, especially the red checks and the weathering. The red checks very much remind me of a modern reboot of 1st edition Dark Angels.
The only model I am not completely sold on is the Ven Dread. It may be the photos though and as a Black Templars player I know how hard it is to photo black models.
However I think the black maybe needs breaking up a bit more. You have used the red checks to do this very effectively on the arms, and I think something something similar on the body would break it up a little, although maybe not more checks. I think it's the gorget and helmet area that could do with something. I guess it's because that's the Dreadnought's "face" and you want the eye drawn there. Something as simple as a red aquilla or Dark Angels symbol on the gorget maybe, or the helmet a different colour?
I am purely nitpicking though, all of the army is looking very nice, looking forward to seeing some more.
Edit: Actually looking at the photos of the Dread again I don't think it's the sarcophagos area so much, as you have the red Dark Angels symbols on the sides, it may be the legs that look a tiny bit plain. I think it's the centre of the gold detailing being plain black. Not sure now, it may just be the photos. In any case it's all lookin' good!
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Thanks for the comments, i think i agree with you about the legs. i may go back at a later stage and add to them.

Some slight progress today, been on shifts lately so not much time for painting. I did manage to get a cc terminator done though with the rest on their way. I also picked up a landraider from my local GW which im going to paint when i have done this squad, i also ordered some FW brass etch DA bits to decorate the LR with. Where i see the whirlwinds as ordinary support vehicles, the landraiders are more precious relics. anyway a pic for you, im not happy with the writing on the shield though and i think im gong to re-do it.

Why , check out a place called darksphere.co. uk. Landraiders are a full £10 cheaper, in fact every thing is cheaper.
Oh and good work on the fig btw way, as to the writing how are you doig it with a paint brush or a pen. Pen is always mightier then the....brush Anyway yeah micron pens if you don't already use them check them out.
35065

I have just been doing it with a brush but i think the one i was using is getting a little worn out so ill use a new one next time. I had heard about micropens but not really looked into them. Can you only get them online or would wh smiths and such sell them?

Love the Black Termies. But you know, i just got hit full force with a "flashback" to my youth. The thing that triggered it? Those Check patterns they were all over Models in the RT and early 2nd edition days, I remember that Terminator Captain with the Grenade Launcher in his powerfist was always painted with checks on in WD.
That is so old school, I remember opening the Deathwing Expansion to space hulk and going wow...Librarians, Captains, Assault cannons I can even remember how the rule book smelt! Oh and that brought back a flood of Space Crusade memories!
35065

Very pretty plog. A wee suggestion on the Ven Dread: chop the front piece of a Ravenwing bike in half (if you need one, pm me, and I'll send you a couple), and use the wings on each shoulder. A bit of DA-ness without being overblown, perhaps?

Ohh figure case what kind did you get? Also we all need a break or get burnt out, like I told you early I took a break also and then the SM video game came out and well you know the rest. Are you going all Deathwing or you doing some basic tactical too?
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
i just got a basic GW one for now, might get a KR one later on. It will be all deathwing, no tactical for the time being. Although i may paint one up later on for fun Automatically Appended Next Post: Well i finished the LR up, just added a few transfers and weathering. Only problem is i forgot to seal the tank before weathering so the transfer paper has picked up the powders and ghosted lol! oh well. It will do for now

Post by: Calibanite Lion
Well i had my first game in about 12-13 years yesterday. My list was as follows:
Belial
X3 dreads with power fist and plasma cannon
X2 CC terminator squads
X1 Terminator squad with assualt cannon
X1 LandRaider
I borrowed the extra 2 dreads and the extra CC termie squads from someone in store who was kind enough to help me upto 1500pts. I was playing necrons for kill points and i am happy to say i won! i lost 6 terminators over 4 turns and my LR was immobilised but thats it I did have a run of first turn bad luck though..... Master Uriel teleported in with his CC termie squad first turn and i rolled 3 on this mishap table. This resulted in my opponent sticking them in the far bottom corner of the table!! getting 40 shots a turn from necrons meant he lost his full termie squad before they got back in the fight. Uriel however managed survive and got into cc last turn haha!
Really enjoyed the game though and the necron player was a decent guy
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Well i finished 2 of the CC terminators, only 2 more to go and that squad is complete. I also started working on a new Master Of The Deathwing. His name will be Master Ramos, Uriel will go and be a squad sgt. let me know what you think of them. I am also toying with the idea of having a squad of vet marines after the 3rd term squad... not sure though??!
Master Ramos ( not sure if you can see it propperly? )

22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
What's your list at just now?
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
will be
3 terminator squads
plas cannon dread
land raider
belial
so that will leave me 250pts left to my first 1500pts, all deathwing or some marines for tactical flexibility?
24703
Post by: Norn King
Very nice.
22619
Post by: inmygravenimage
I'd say scouts for flexibility, actually. But deathwing termie wall is nasty in current meta. Of course, as they're under old codex, dw can do cc cyclones, iirc, which is very silly/vicious.
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
I did think about scouts, ill look into it
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Well i was in town today so i popped into my local GW and picked up some reinforcements.... 2 boxes of scouts, 1 normal bolter and h bolter squad and a sniper squad. All i need now is another terminator squad and i will have a full 1500pts ( only took me a year lol! )
so my list as it stands:
Belial
1x CC termi squad
1x shooty termi squad
1x ven dread
1x landraider
1x sniper scout squad
1x shooty scout squad
a rough value of 1250 pts
I'll try and upload some pics of scouts this weekend i hope

Post by: Calibanite Lion
Been a while since i updated, i have been really busy. Lately i have been reading again, i have just finished The Purging Of Kadilus. A really good book and if you love Dark Angels, buy it and read it! I finished painting the first scout squad and just have the snipers to do and then my army is nearly fully painted. Should really get a full army shot soon. I have picked up the last 250pts for it..... a Storm raven! couldnt resist, on this note however i have been toying with the idea of using the Blood Angels codex instead of the Dark Angels one. With what i have my army would be legal at 1500pts and the codex gives me waaayyy more options than the Dark Angels one. Looking forward to getting the Storm Raven painted up in the AC/ DC Wing black ( sorry bad joke lol ). Anyway.. thoughts comments on using the Storm Raven and going to the Blood Angels codex???

Okay, I finished my entry for the dakka painting comp, this is the background I posted with them;
Background;
Atticus and Menos are Terran bounty hunters. Originally officers from a local hive enforcement precinct they quickly became aware of the additional earning potential by performing 'odd jobs' for the local gang leaders. The pair started to become known for their skills and as demand for them increased, the risks started to rise rapidly. The decision was made, they sourced themselves counterfeit indents and joined the local bounty guild taking to the stars trading their skills for Throne Geld.
I decided to add a spotter servo skull to Menos, to help track down bountys in crowded archeo markets or dense terrain etc. what do you think?

Thanks, yeah I was thinking it could be an assassin. I'm really torn now as a started creating these guys before fully reading the =][=Munda part of the rules. I may now not be able to use all the characters I made and have to make all new ones lol! I really want a Rogue Trader crew and only a captain can start with a power sword. I have suggested we increase the tg we start with and be able to purchase from the bizarre straight away upon creation, that way we can equip the fighters how we want.
Anyone else play =][=Munda and have any suggestions or tips to how they create warbands?

No painting done as yet, I have been too busy kitbashing;
Interrogator Borgvald and Vernik his cyber canine
Technician Kolfinn, expert in Xenos technologies
Outlaw psyker Zarkov Kasky and crewman Raine
Let me know your thoughts.

There seems to be a fair bit of inq28 around the blogs at the moment, I'm tempted to do a few more myself!

Thanks, I tend to have short attention span which is useless for army building but perfect for small forces with varied paint schemes. Have played a couple of =][=Munda games it just takes me back to 2nd edition which I started with.

Some progress, I finished Kolfinn and his gun drones and I also finished Vernik. I think Borgvald will be next on the slab.
Vernik
Kolfinn the Xeno tech expert
Kolfinns rusted out tau drones, purchased from a Xeno tech black market, if Borgvalds superiors knew he had these, it's like your mum finding porn under your bed, your in trouble! Anyone care to name the pair?

Kalervo Borgvald, Ordo Xenos Interregator.
This is the finished Borgvald!
Edit: Fluff now included, as always feedback is appreciated.
Interrogator Borgvald;
A conceited, arrogant individual who walks with a purposeful stride.
Kalervo Borgvald was originally born into a wealthy merchant family and through his youth dreamed of travelling the stars like his parents, not for wealth, but for adventure. A member of the Ordo Xenos and interrogator to Lord Inquisitor Blomkamp, a wickedly intelligent individual who believes that the best way to kill your enemy is to use their own weapons against them. Kalervo adheres to Blomkamps doctrines strictly and agrees completely with his philosophies, he has always been fascinated by Xeno Tech, fascinated to the point where obsessed is starting to become more of an appropriate description.
Some time ago Inquisitor Blomkamp had learned of the existence of a powerful Xeno weapon called The Arche Spear, it is said that the weapon belonged to an ancient civilisation believed to have inhabited a solar system somewhere in the obscurus sector, they were known as The Progenitors, a race of mythical demi gods long since consigned to the annals of history, thought to have been swallowed up by the old gods in some cataclysmic extinction event. Blomkamp had come by an old tome called 'The Book of The Progenitor' at one of the Archeo and Xeno Tech markets that he regularly frequented. During intense study the book slowly started to reveal hidden passages and ciphers, this is where he learned of the artefact and the book appears to be pointing to a location that the Progenitors could have hidden the fabled weapon prior to their downfall. It is possible that the weapon still exists, it is imperative that the weapon is found and put to use against enemies of the Imperium.

Thanks! I used an empire free company torso and legs, the servo skull from the fw tech priest as a head, the arms are from the de wracks, the backpack is made from a tau bit on the riptide sprue, a de wrack bit and guitar wire, think the sword in sheath is from the sm scouts?

I have finished Kasky and Raine, released from their imprisonment by Borgvald to aid in his quest for the Arche Spear, Kasky is a moderately powerful rogue psyker. Once in the employ of Inquisitor Corvidae, he was allowed to grow unfettered and powerful, slowly turning insane. Corvidae covered his deviancy for as long as he could but before long it came too much to the fore and he was hunted down and captured. Borgvald needing a powerful mind with comprehensive knowledge of the forbidden sought him out. A covert operation was launched and the psyker was retrieved along with some unexpected baggage, the extraction method was high ex mounted to the exterior cell walls, it blew Raines cell also. Raine, once a naval rating (imprisoned for braining a fellow rating who tried to cheat him at cards) proved invaluable to the exit strategy was allowed to accompany the cell off world and is now a fledgling member.
Seeing the pictures now I feel I rushed the paint jobs, I could have done better but I'm happy with them.

This is the last member of Borgvalds retinue, ace pilot Zeph Malik.
Inducted into service at an early age he was singled out for his quick reactions and high aptitude. Able to read situations in the blink of an eye and adjust just as quickly he has been responsible for the safe passage of Borgvald and his accomplices for many years.
My favourite top down view
And a group shot, rather a poor one, any advice on group shots appreciated

Looks good!
I always find shots of any more than three or four minis tricky, but sometimes, taking them further away and then zooming/cropping can help get them all in focus. The plainer the background the better as well, so the minis don't get lost.

I find having multiple levels within the photo composition helps (not like school photos), but have some rubble etc strewn around with a model on top helps draw the eye in a standard photo. Otherwise in agreement with Paradigm regarding simple backgrounds etc. I meant to ask where you got your's from?
It's also fun to have the angle of shot quirky. For example, do some close-ups of Borgvald in focus but camera at floor level tilted up to be aimed at the head of whoever's at the back. If you do that you tend to need an SLR so you can manually change the f stop to something like f22 so everything is in focus. The figures would need to be in a V shape with Borgvald at the point of the formation
Ahem! Is this where so admit to being a camera nerd too

Awesome retinue, nice riffs on the scions kit. I like the henchman pose with the crossed chainsword and of course, the cyber-mastiff is the best.
camera advice: There are too much shadows in your shots. you need to put some translucent material (bubble wrap, white fabric, plastic, etc) in between your light source and light it all around. and turn off the flash too if that is it. even better take the photo outside on a cloudy day, you just need diffused omnidirectional light. You will find it vastly easier to take some sort of group shot where all the minis are lined up, even though it is hard to fit all the minis in the picture.

Thanks, the background is just tiles from the dust tactics boardgame, I think they suit the atmosphere of necromunda and urban 40k.

The pilot looks spiffing mate, the cheque pattern really emphasise the pilot theme especially on the helmet.
I also like the chainsaw with hazard stripes made me chuckle that one, great stuff again but have you considered alternatives Instead of using guitar wire
I only mention it as you have got some very obvious bends, Zinge industries does some great alternatives in bendy wires and bendable resins

It's the first time I've really used guitar wire, it is difficult to bend properly I'm finding. I have looked at zinge but the price difference made my choice. I am now rethinking that though so may use zinge in future conversions.

Guitar wire is cheap but has it's down falls, one it's a bastard to bend and paint chips easily from it.

I love that Emperor model! The cloak is definitely the best part of your paint job. The only complaint I have, and it has nothing to do with your work, is that the miniature's head looks pretty small for the size of the body. I guess a lot of the Kabuki not-Primarch models have that problem though.

Thanks Zerg, I know what you mean about the head, I can live with it until FW get round to making him though!
Hail Hydra!
I have started my Alpha Legion in Ernest. I don't have an airbrush so I tried to come up with something that would work with washes and brush. I'm quite pleased with the result, a nice blue/green. Very WIP atm but they are on the way and I think this method will be a quick and dirty one. the new Leadbelcher spray from GW is just the ticket, nice smooth basecoat in one pass, brilliant!

The test squad for my Alpha Legion is complete minus transfers. A very quick paint scheme thanks to the GW basecoat spray. I'm happy at how they look. Gotta tell you, I love the way their armour colour came out. Superb job.
I do have a teeny bit of critique if you don't mind. They look soooo good that the bases seem to stand out as being very plain. That may just be personal preference and I know many may disagree, but thought it was worth mentioning. The important thing though is that the marines are stunning, well done
35065
Post by: Calibanite Lion
Thanks TP, the armour is actually the easiest part. Just various glazes of blue and green. I hear what you are saying about the bases, they are intentionally sparse. I want to save the more elaborate bases for the characters to help them stand out, plus, i think sometimes a whole lot of busy bases can detract from a large army. I think it just comes down to preference in the end.
