After playing with the colors and how to paint Deathwing ( I use to use all white back in the day ) and after looking and searching ways to paint DW I came up with a system. My test Terminator came from the free WD Terminator sprue what a better candidate to use lol. Now here is the Sgt. and using my airbrush came up with a system of black primer, Graveyard earth first base then, Bone white then washed with Sepia.
I am also working on my assualt squad and used the Vanguard box to include in my regular assault guys as veterans in the squad.
I posted my WIP on my gallery.
Hope you like.
I really like the Vanguard model and can see the clean lines on the Deathwing Terminator but the lighting in the photograph makes the colors look washed out.
Skalk Bloodaxe thanks for the complement. I am close to finishing both. I am trying out Les Bursly power sword style, the one he did for the space wolves tutorial I will post it soon.
Cool stuff, i think your brushed power sword looks best on the jump pack marine, i like the green you have for your da aswell, looks alot better than normal da I am doing my deathwing in black as i have not really seen any bone schemes i liked, yours is good however, i do feel that the chest of the termi is a bit dark compared with the rest of the mini or have you only painted part stages with it being the tester? will look out for more
WhaleMusic and Calibanite Lion thanks the airbrushed tecnique works great. The terminator was my first one and looked ok but the assualt marine came out better. Yea I wanted a wear and tear look and not a squeeky clean out of the forge look. I am experimenting on the free termie we got from WD on the chipped and damaged look. I will post more. I don't have to much reference to go off of and was thinking going back old school like you and go all black and red, but decided to go with the current. Maybe when forge world does more throwback figures I will do a squad. Thanks again everyone.
Yea with the shoulder pads I had to bring back the classic colors, you know never forget where you came from.
Originally when the 2nd ed ( I believe its been awhile ) Space Hulk I was furious with GW making my DA Termies white like look at me shoot me cause you can see me now! But then when 3rd ed 40k and several WD mags came out it sorta grew on me. Well I took a look at yours and you brought back some time when I had my first termie box set in the 80's when all my marines was black and red. You did a great job on your force.
Popsicle I will do one with my other squad and will post it. So keep a eye out. Silly boy and Blunt man thanks the idea was from Les Bursley for the power sword and I seem to get the concept using the airbrush.
I am trying to get my guys on the table so looking at what I think is tabletop quality and not masterpieces that wouild take months for one figure. Silly I can shoot you a email if you want regarding the wash.
I love your paint scheme, excellent shading tone and high lights. Which is why I don't like your gold. Try using all the same techniques on the gold trims and then dry brush gold over the top. I start with brown with a little gold added, for the base coat. I add yellow and gold for the next coat and then use gold for high lights. I painted my slaannesh the same way you are painting your marines. I used a drastic shading scheme and just painted the gold a solid tone. So for the last 5 years I've wished that I had read tutorials on the web before I finished my noise boys. If you want to read tutorials, this sight is soaked in good metallic techniques. Try looking into the metal free metallic style I find that if you paint larger metal items this way and then dry brush gold or silver over them you'll end up with a great finish.

Thanks for the comment Meatshield. But I was not trying to go for a full NMM on all the metalics just the sword. Maybe you can show some of your slaannesh guys on your gallery and show me what you are explaining. I am more a true metalics guy but when Les did his power sword it looked so cool I had to test this technique out. So all my power swords will be like this for now. But yea I been lurking behind the scene for some years on dakka and found this place full of info and inspiration.
Ok after a short Thanksgiving holiday (I had to work Friday) I was grinding away to get my marines done. My Vet Assault Marines is down and 1 1/2 to go. I still have to do some touch ups and detail on them but they look good at the moment. My Terminators I just had to grind away cause I believe light colors are intimidating and not forgiving. So I went online and did my continuing research from WW II German desert paint themes to modern US paint themes to get the weathering effect and not new out of the forge. Since I was in the first Gulf War most of my pictures was damaged by water and can't go by that reference. So I decided to not be so picky for my tabletop army and even though I want all my guys to look amazing on the table that would be too long(sorry for the ramble ). So here you guys go let me know what you think. I will also post on my gallery for you all to look at. Enjoy.
Your swords metal is pretty nifty. On the last one it would look a little bit better if you blended the blue a bit more. Right now it just looks like a streak of blue painted onto the blade rather than a reflection or shadow. Do you have a double action airbrush? If you ease up on the amount of paint when you do the stroke a little slower it could make a huge difference. Other than that I love the terminators! Reminds me of the white termies I always saw when I started Warhammer way back when. But, in all honesty, these are way better. The off white/beige tones make them feel organic and more at ease than most other armored units. What did you do on the termies bases (specifically the ones with the cobble stones)? Did you green stuff the stones and lay down some sand? I love your basing, and I rarely get to see well thought out bases.
Infrenis thanks, yea still getting the grasp of this technique of the power swords, and yea its a double action AB and loving using it more. As for the base its just sand and the GW small slate and large slate. I got a sort of a theme to match my gaming table. You can see a bit more on my gallery.
Well I wanted to post these while I was updating, I was assembling my new terminators (well had them for weeks but never opened them) while my other figures are drying or needed a mind break from painting.
These are much better then the AOBR models and more posable. I am going to experement again on the paint scheme and do more airbrushing then the brush technique.
I will keep you all posted on my progress.
these are really lovely models! i love the bone white tones you achieved for your DW and the vanguard vets look stunning! I will attempt the sword technique but due to no airbrush i'll have a crack at wet blending! but hey! you've inspired me to try new things and in this hobby that's always good! keep up the excellent work please!
Nerdfest, thanks I try. I think you will love my new terminators and right now a little behind on the posting but I got them assembled and primed and some based color already I will post that soon. If you are in the U.S. and looking for a great deal for a airbrush go to TCP Global http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdepot/ I been pushing this place for a bit due to I use to be in automotive industry for a bit and use to order all my Spray Guns through them.
The Master Series is knock offs of Iwata and Iwata is a expensive AB to get but can be worth it if you stay in the hobby. But $3 - 4 bills can be a wee expenise.
Check it out on the combo deals and if you have any questions let me know.
And DemonEater thanks for the complement.
Automatically Appended Next Post: WOW!! Nerdfest you got some awsome figures painted in your gallery!! Hot! Yes! !! Your kroot looks great too. Too bad my tau is in my box of shame at the moment and have no insperation to paint them untill GW gets their straight when it comes to releasing codex's when they release a new game manual edition. I love your Exorcist Marines.
Wow, you've been busy! Your paint schemes are excellent and very clean. The technique on the power swords is awsome and I am so going to try that the next time I paint somehting that has a Power Weapon.
It is a pity that we occupy opposite sides of the North American continent as I'd love to invite those DW over for dinner. We'd have Nurgle's Rot as the main course with a good helping of BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD on the side.
Ok here is another update. I have placed my first 2 base colors and building up from dark to light. I used Vallejo Air black then GW Graveyard Earth and then Vallejo Model Iraqi Sand at a 40 degree angle to get that lighting effect. All using my airbrush. I will brush in washes and detail but I am taking more time on this squad and want them to come out better then the last. Hope you like the progress.
Ok been a busy week of work, here is my update on my terminators and I am sorta experimenting on my Sgt and Cyclone marine on the lighting angle and highlighting effect with my airbrush and this is the first shade up and still not that happy and will mix more white. Still taking my time on this one and want this squad to come out better then my first one. Let me know what you guys think.
Ok took a break from working late from my job and see what the Dak people are doing on this late Thursday night.
Calibanite Lion, thanks and yea I am doing him but I sorta did a mistake and seeing if I can fix it if not he gets a Simplegreen bath. I will be taking a lot more time with my HQ and important troops who I want to stand out on the gaming table and not blend in with the rest of the squad. Bear Lamorte thanks for compliment! If it was'nt for peeps on Dak to inspire me and give me tons of info, well ...my troops would be just primed
Allright a small update I think I got the highlighting and lighting just right. I started my detailing just to see how it looks. Well tell me what you think and would love some constructive critisizm.
Ok I have been swamped at work and have no drive to paint much, so what do you do? BUILD!! So I assembled my plastic Assault Squad to go with my Vanguard Assault marines and sort of detailed a little more on my Terminator. Let me know what you think?
Thanks Skalk on the terminator, Yea the only one I liked is the guy kneeling (guess where I got that idea) but the assult box does not give you much of different poses. But the metal Vanguard are just awsome and wish they would give you that option.
Hopefully when I add color to it, it will make up for the bad static box poses lol.
Cardinal Xaphan and Lennysmash thanks!! Yea kinda behind since last weekend I got a game in with my buddy FastEddie and my brother inlaw. Wife was in Uxbridge England and it was a guys night of 40k and UFC. I hope my wife gets me something from FW for Xmas lol!! Hopefully I get more time to paint this week if my work does not get in the way.
Looking great! The armour on the termies is fantastic. I can't think of anything that needs improving on the armour but some paint chips made with a sponge and some scorched brown (dark brown) can really add some character, especially for the close-combat termies as they fight up close and personal
Again thanks all for the positive comments! CL I am going to do some (at least try ) wet blending on the TC almost the style of the PS I have done on the other figures.
It's been a long week for me at work and I am working from home and decided to logon and respond to my Dakka brothers and sisters (this is my break lol).
I hope to sqeeze in some hours in this weekend on my troops and keep you all posted. Thanks again everyone.
Oooh forgot to tell you all my wife got me a set of MkIII armour marines from FW and she gets back from England Saturday! WHOOHOO!!!
I have been looking at the FW marines aswell, really want some crusade variants but they will have to wait as they are for a different non DA project i have in mind. As for the wet blending ill be interested to see how it comes out, i have just bought a box of cc termies and the blades are really close together. Good luck
CL yea I wanted to add a flavor to my squad by mixng in some various types of armour and not to look so static and cookie cutter like. Like I told you when I saw your marines all in black I wanted to start a pre green army but gotta stay focus for the time and finish my 3RD Co. first and then start on another army.
My wife also picked up a squad of Heresey armour squad for his B-Day and maybe I will trade 2 of my MkIII guys to have a little mix. Well let's see if FasteddieXX01 is willing when he gets it. Well I posted on my gallery of the marines I have completed and I most definitly need a better camera. Ignore if you can see it, my unfinished Preditor !!
WM yup 88' the model on the right and 90 for the one on the left, good eye!!. Ok work been slowing my creative roll and been staring at my guys more then painting them. So just a little update no real progress other then I am close to completed my Veteran Assault squad and my wife did get me what I wanted from England but had it shipped due to wierd weather in the UK. So I got my Mk III guys and a little something for Fasteddiexx1.
Enjoy the pics. Sorry heavy pics!
Daemon Eater and Nerdfest thanks and good luck with that cause I am trying it my self on the lightning claws on my termies. Shoot me a PM when you complete your project.
Ok here is another update. I took a break on my marines and needed to complete my Predator. I started it several months ago and was a distraction and a mind break from my marines. So I did take pics on the assembly to the priming and first basing and was stopped at that point.
Since work was pretty stressful this past week I basically was winding down by playing COD Black Ops and trying to finish my assault guys.
Friday night and this weekend I was hooked on my tank and was in the zone. My inspiration was from the other Grey_Death of The Painting Corps on his tutorial on weathering his Medusa Chapter and from Model Medic. Both these guys helped me out on my tank, Thanks guys!! .
Enjoy and let me know what you think.
Ok fella's I completed on the weathering with the pigments for the dried mud effects and now will add script writtings and decals. Here are more shots and let me know what you guys think.
Thanks Daemon Eater, well maybe soon. Me and my buddies been doing a 500-750pt game lately, and you know at that low there is not much selection and my brother in-law who plays Necrons only has about 500pts.
But our games got them motivated to build and paint more of their force. So stay tuned.
Checking back in to see all the awesome! That Predator is amazing, looks more like a diorama piece than a tabletop game piece. The mud is what really sells it. I mean the rest is stunning but the mud is what gives it that "look", reminds me the stuff I saw when I was a kid in my grandfather's military magazines (the ads in the back always had model tanks, etc).
All of your work is impressive. How large of a force are you striving for?
Wow I feel the pressure now to assemble my FW guys LOL!!
Guys thanks again for the positive comments, and Skalk I want to add a flavor to the table with those effects on the tank
The amount of guys I am trying point wise is about 2k. But when is enough when a chapter is 1000 Marine strong! LOL!!
Well guys stay tuned and I will keep you guys posted.
Ok guys and gals not a real update but wanted to show what I also got for Christmas. Fasteddiexx1 got me a Land Raider and Ork Flash Gits with squig targeter. I can't wait to get started on all the new models I got from MkIII marines, Land Raider and now another ork. Well it is a new year coming and want to get another game or two before the year ends and get my models done and show you all.
Well hope you all had a great Christmas and a upcoming New Year and hope to see all your new models you all got from Christmas!
Ok was on a mission since I saw what was on my calendar for work so I decided to get some painting in and wow did I get what I was looking for in my terminator and also decided to work on my Belial and got my colors right so I had to re base color him and will go with a black robe instead of the tradition green to pay respect to the original color of the DA's. I have to do some touch up on the Sgt. claw since I accidenty touched the claw while washing the base of the figure. Well enjoy my friends.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Congrads on your Land Raider. There's 1/4 of your 1,000 pts army right there. Ha.
You make me really want to buy an airbrush.
Skalk do it man, I know you really want to get one! LOL! Let me know if you have any questions on buying one. Once you paint a tank with it you will be amazed the time savings you do.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks Fasteddiexx1 blood whaaa!? You must be mistaken my DW with your Khorne heads LOL!
Ok I got some inspiration from browsing the dakka forums and started to finish my Sgt.Terminator with details and the decal, also bouncing back and forth with my last Veteran Assault Marine by airbrushing his arms and I did not want to waste paint and based another veteran marine.
Please let me know what you all think.
You miniatures are looking sweet also awesome job on airbrushing wish i could get mine to look like that :( anyway awesome job dude cant wait to see more !
dark6spectre wrote:what colour do you airbrush your marines? any good work on the guys keep it up!
Dark6spectre thank you and Happy New Year all! I use Luftwaffe Green by Vallejo Model Color thined down with Windex then I wash it with Baddab Black.
Sarigar wrote:Very good blog with how you can paint infantry with an airbrush. Great work all around. Thanks for sharing.
Sarigar thank you for the compliment on the blog and my work. If it was'nt for Les doing his blog I would not put two and two together since I been using my brush for years. I had my airbrush which I used during my automotive repair days and it was just sitting there and was like duh!! Scale models been doing this for years lets have a go at it and trust me it saves tons of time on your troops!
Commander Cain wrote:Great work! The tank weathering on the last page is great
Commander Cain thank you!! If you like that and want to learn this tecnique I highly recomend Model Medic on Youtube I learned it from him and theTamiya Hobby books at your local hobby store if they carry it.
Zasamel wrote:You miniatures are looking sweet also awesome job on airbrushing wish i could get mine to look like that :( anyway awesome job dude cant wait to see more !
Zasamel all the credit is to Les I use his tecnique to help me refine mine. All my steps was all over the place ,Prime, Base, wash, highlight, detail, wash, highlight...... now it's just Prime, Base/Detail, wash, then highlight. I also recomend going to his Youtube channel and look up his vids.
Again guys thank you for the kind words. I love this site cause everyone is helping everyone get better at the hobby and gaming and not like other sites where they constently flaming people trying to get better and that can make or break a person getting or staying in this hobby.
So share the love and send me a PM if you want to know how I did my models and I will be glad to go over the steps.
I agree with Zasamel on the awesome airbrush job...
Even though I have watched a few tutorials on the web, it just doesn't seem to work when I'm the one wielding that mad-inspiring tool of hellish pits!!
Yggdrasil wrote:I agree with Zasamel on the awesome airbrush job...

So, kudos!!!
Yggdrasil Happy New Year! Well practice on some of your project of shame or older figure's. I was just using it just for priming and basing and now working on detailing like the power swords or highlights. For now just think of it as a flamer and slowly experiment with it and you will start to feel very comfortable with it like using your normal brush.
shingouki wrote:loving your stuff so far especially the blades and lightning claws.the weathering on the tank is also top notch.
Shingouki Happy New Year and thanks I try to do well. I am mostly consitrating to get my guys on the table and experimenting on different styles and trying to fuse it with mine. My terminators weathering style is inspired by Raff which I think does the best DW painting.
dark6spectre wrote:Thanks GreyDeathOne, do you know which vallejo paint is more sort-of in between catachan green and Dark Angels green?
Dark6spectre well that is a good question, thats why I use Luftwaffe Green cause its not really dark like the DA Green ( the old recipe from GW the current one is kinda forest green ) and depending on the primer color white/grey or Black it will come out a shade lighter or darker.
Here is a conversion chart found here in Dakka http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Range_Compatibility_Chart
I use grey primer when I want certain marines to show details like my Vanguard guys but my basic tactical marines I use Black primer/Vallejo Air Primer grey and they come out dark enough even when I wash them in Baddab Black.
Hope this helped you. I will post the difference tonight when I get home from work the two shades.
dark6spectre wrote:yeah, helps me a lot, but i noticed there are two types of Vallejo, which one did you use? the game colour or model colour?
Model colour sorry that did'nt help when I said Luftwaffe Green Yea there is not much difference in the VGC and VMC but the VMC have more shades to pick from where as VGC basically copied the colours (and improved it ) and renamed them close to the GW paints. Also they make the colours that GW stop making for the VGC.
I also sent you a PM to another conversion chart site. Let me know how it works out.
Ok dark6spectre hope this kind of shows the difference in shades of DA Green. The assault marine on the left is using Vallejo Air Primer a dark gray as primer then using VMC Luftwaffe Green and a light wash with Baddab Black, the center is a tactical marine from my original force from the mid 90's and that was primed with a light gray with GW Spray and GWDA Green, and the one on the right is a AOBRTac Marine with VA Black as primer and then VMC Luftwaffe Green with a heavy wash.
Sorry the colours are not as noticeable I am using my G1 phone for the pics. But you can kinda see the center model is lighter and also the model on the left is also.
I wanted the Vangaurd/Vet Assualt Marine a shade brighter then my tac on the right to just to show more details and not drowned out in dark colours.
Hope this helped out.
dark6spectre wrote:Coolio, would devlan mud be a good wash colour for the armour? or should badab black be always used?
To be honest Delvan Mud and Griffon Sephia washes I use on DW and to be honest never tried it on green before? From my research online I see mostly a black wash on green and as mention above sephia and Delvan on DW.
But remember there is no right or wrong way on painting your style if it works for you and your happy then that's what really counts cause its your marines not anybody else s.
For example and a good one look at the Ultra Marines gallery there are tons of shades of blue that people use for their army.
So do a test figure like I do and see how it come out and let me know.
Good luck and look forward to see your DA!
Wow. I am constantly impressed by your airbrush skills. The Lightning Claws on your Sgt.Terminator are stunning and truly convey an aura of swirling power.
I do have to note that I take issue with the "decoration" you've chosen for the base.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Wow. I am constantly impressed by your airbrush skills. The Lightning Claws on your Sgt.Terminator are stunning and truly convey an aura of swirling power.

At least it isn't
ha
Thanks Skalk, yea the Khorne CSM helmet is just to taunt FasteddieXX1 since he is a Khorne head. I even paint Ultra Marines paint themes on my terrian pieces like the GW tree, crater, rhino thing and the barriers where the SM bike is all bashed up. I paint it blue just to get under his skin! Fasteddie and I been painting off and on since RT days in the 80's.
I know once he starts his CSM guys he will mosdef paint a bunch of DA guys on his guys. I believe he might add a DA marine torn in half or a body pile of DA's as base for his new plastic demon!! .
So Skalk did you do it? Did you buy a airbrush yet?
ceorron wrote:OMG those are b-a-e-utiful. Some exceptional painting i must admit. Great bases too. Must watch.
Thank you ceorron for the compliment. I try to improve and refine my style as I build my force. I am currently working on Belial and several of my other DW and the last Vang Vet. Marine. I will keep everyone posted soon.
Ahh, i have missed alot of good updates whilst my nets been down, where to start lol
The pred looks awesome, like the weathering, the terminators are looking good as always and i think that the air brushing on the l-claws looks good. im still torn between doing a green power weapon look to mine or metal though.
your belial is looking nice, i love that terminator captain and nearly used it as the basis for mine.
Have you started on your fw marines yet? ( dont know if you have mentioned it but i was mainly looking at the pictures lol )
CL thanks and feeling the urge to start on them and open the bag and start assembling. But I promise I will let you know and do a detail blog on those MKIII's. Fasteddiexx1 agreed to trade 2 Heresey armour ones I got for him for his Bday. So you will notice that once I start.
Well got a tiny update on my DA's. I been detailing Belial and seem to salvage the paint mistake I did and looks good so far but let me know what you guys think. I did some experimetal wet blending and wow that can get frustrating. Several times I felt like throwing him in my Tau box of shame !! I also AB the power sword on my last Vang. Vet Assault marine and glued his arm on. This was not fun and also after detailing his chest area now its all covered up by his arms.
Well I got a new cell phone a Samsung Galaxy S and with 5mp camera it was a big upgrade from my G1.
Well enjoy and let me know what you think!
OK I needed a break from the green and bone white and was browsing the dakka forums and I saw the Deathwatch contest and then checked out the video about the game and saw a great picture of a DA assault marine in the book. I then was inspired. OK lets make a DWDA but not a assault troop bit a tactical marine instead and almost the same pose.
So I rummage through my bits box and started to build.
I had "fun"time (not really more like frustrated) super glueing the legs to a rock and no go. Even hairdrying the glue and nope. So I pinned it. So here is what it looks like at the moment.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks Dark6specre also can't wait to see your marine. I will post more progress on him. I am going to use VMC gun metal blue as the base and see how that comes out. Trying to go for that different look instead the standard way. . Think outside the box and experiment.
Ok everyone I been busy with work and preparing my oldest daughters 21st birthday party. But manage to squeeze in some time today. I was all over the place. I was working on my DA Deathwatch Sgt. And my terminators.
My Deathwatch Sgt. I used a VMC Gun metal blue and well came out a bit bright. So i washed him in Badab black. Well still not happy but will work on him. I also worked on Belial and still a little slow in progress so I jumped on my cyclone missle launcher termie and its moving along.
I also forgot to show you all my new toy I got last weekend.
I gave in and bought a Ravenwing squadron box set ok nuff blabbin here is my update .
No, haven't even looked at airbrushes yet. I don't see one in my immediate future but it is still something I'd like to try. Hopefully one of my friends will buy one and I'm try ruining something with theirs instead.
You work is amazing. Every time I come here the updates slack my jaw. Nice new camera, btw.
Skalk thanks and well when I decide to get another airbrush I will hit you up before I sell it and will get you a real good deal (not free but good) so you will get a PM when I do
dark6spectre thanks I was like a school kid all over again when I got it last week and my wife just rolled her eyes when fasteddiexx1 and I came back with our new troops !!! Can't wait to start on all these new models I got, especially my FW Mklll marines.
But gotta stay focus and grind away on the current stuff on my desk
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Bound and determined to induct me into your airbrush cult I see. Ok. I'm game. Keep me in mind and we'll work out something decent.
Skalk yes give in to the darkside soon you will be a chaos champion with a airbrush as your mighty weapon given to you by the gods of the warp!
CKO thanks I am glad you looked into my thread. Are you a DA fan?
CKO wrote:No, I am more of a Black Templar and Space Wolf fan. I am playing a game tommorrow using my friends models, its the all termie troop army!
Nice I love players that play non codex marines. Let me know how your game went.
TristanGray and brother_camael thank you for subscribing to my thread.
Well everyone it was another busy week at work and weekend with my youngest daughters birthday. But I manage to get a short paint session with Fasteddiexx1 and $NightBringer$ last night and I was working on 3 models and get them completed by the end of this weekend. Well between BBQ'ing and my desk I did'nt get as far as I wanted to.
Also this morning woke up with a migrane I was in no mood to paint.
So hear is what progress I got done so far, I finally mounted the jump pack on my vet assault marine, detail on my CML termie, and detail on Belial plus trying a new tecnique on his powersword.
Let me know what you guys think.
Enjoy.
Belial is looking good, he is supposed to have an obsidion sword though, are you doing your own thing with it? ( not being a fluff nazi lol, just asking ) any chance of an army shot so far?
Calibanite Lion wrote:Belial is looking good, he is supposed to have an obsidion sword though
So is Azrael but even 'eavy metal painters don't paint him that way, lol.
GDO I'm sorry to say im not a fan of the sword, for me the transition is too quick, it just seem to have the natural element that your other blades did.
Calibanite Lion wrote:Belial is looking good, he is supposed to have an obsidion sword though, are you doing your own thing with it? ( not being a fluff nazi lol, just asking ) any chance of an army shot so far?
Thanks CL. Yea I was experimenting and yea they are obsidian blades. Its just a bit bland black and anyways I was not that happy how it came out. So after thinking about and browsing the gallery I decided to go what I have been doing but use shades of grays instead of blue like my other blades. So it will be black, gray and white.
Thanks for the imput it did help swade me to change it up.

Lennysmash thanks man!! Yea its true alot of people paint the swords different. I was trying to be original. I was searching a Mike McVey paint job he did on a variant he did on Azrael. Its not the one in the old codex but one that was in WD.
To bad I did not keep all my WD in the 90's
GDO I'm sorry to say im not a fan of the sword, for me the transition is too quick, it just seem to have the natural element that your other blades did.
Me too lol. Stay tune for part 2.

How are you painting the Deathwing? You are getting a really nice shade, Its really good. I love your power swords as well...you can pass that trick on also if you'd like
Calibanite Lion wrote:cool, you started any of your fw marines yet?
Soon my brother soon. I know I just traded fasteddiexx1 2 Heresey patterns for two of my MKlll models. So stay tune.
Imperial Monkey wrote:How are you painting the Deathwing? You are getting a really nice shade, Its really good. I love your power swords as well...you can pass that trick on also if you'd like
Imperial Monkey I black prime then use VMC Iraqi Sand then wash with GW Gryphon Sephia then and what ever angle use VMC Iraqi Sand to get the highlight. All using a airbrush.
As for the powersword I learned it from Les Bursly from APG here is the link http://www.youtube.com/user/awesomepaintjob?blend=2&ob=4#p/u/8/AImKoB10ans. Hit me up on PM if you need more details I am always glad to share my technique.
These Models look 150% more awesome in RL, the camera seems to pale it out a lot. So we'll have to work on putting together a little photo booth maybe?

Thanks brother! Well you did have front row seat of most of my models creation
Oi wanna do another paint session this weekend? Let me know.
Ok this weekend was full of distracions. Saturday was the 24hrs of Daytona racing on TV, and catching up on my DVR of my other racing series. I manage to squeeze in some painting after they took a break from the Daytona race for a few hours and sat at my desk upset at my self for not being that motivated.
So I looked at Belial and carefully stripped the away the first job done on the sword and started prepping it.
I decided to do the normal way I have doing some of my power sword but use gray black and white. Well it came out ok could be better but would like some imput.
I also finally finished my last veteran assault guy(whew). Then looked at my termies stairing at me saying finish me finish me. so I started to give its first base layer on all of them using VA light brown using my airbrush.
I forgot to take some pictures but hey when your in the zone your in the zone.
I have been taking my photos using my Samsung Galaxy S phone and was wondering why some pics come out dark and some ok. Then I played with the settings and set it to 400iso and helped out.
Ok nuff rambling here is my small progress and let me know what you guys think ( CalibaniteLion ).
Wow! Those adjustments to your phone really made a different with the pictures. I love the monochrome effect on Belial's sword. And your vets came out great!
yes yes and yes, Belial's sword is a hundred times better. Only thing I'd say is maybe choose a more contrasting colour for the hilt, perhaps a copper or bronze.
joke dude your belial sword is AMAZING, a really cool way to do PW differently. Great to see some more progress from you, keep it going, don't let those stupid men in cars on a tarmac track distract you. remember, 40k is the most important thing in the world!
(joking steak pies are!)
Hey, good progress. I really like the sword it looks pretty awesome!, I am currently making a proper belial conversion and would love to try that but i dont have an airbrush :( I have been messing with my LR today, cant get in the mood to do more termies yet.
Thanks guys for the imput. If it was'nt for your imput (CL and Lenny) I would've settled I think . D6S still waiting for more of your freehand work and more squads completed so get snapping !!! Lenny thanks to your sig I signed up at 40knation. CL yea motivation can be a big factor at times but your work amazes me and makes me jealous you went old school. but find some motivation and keep bringing us fantastic work and btw no have not started my FW marines yet Fasteddiexx1 we gotta hook up for a game soon!!!
Hopefully I can squeeze in some painting with my termies and get my first hightlight and wash in on them. Since the new FAQ came out for the DA it's been a big motivation. I been looking at my Landraider and my FW MKlll marines as motivation so I can finish my guys ready for the board. I have a habbit of making my guys to detailed which is not a bad thing but just want to get some tabletop quality and not some master piece that I would be so worried about my marines more then the objective of the game .
Ok guys thanks again and looking forward to some of your work also.
Haha, I saw your name on the posts list today. Didn't realise it was because of the sig. If you chat to Cran he'll sort you out with a sig I'm sure. Glad you joined the community mate, its new so response take time but hopefully it will grow.
i can't GDO! i have so much school work to do. but be ready for some updates by saturday, i might get those bikes assembled and some more test models.
*also i'm going to start a cross-over chapter which could be used for vanilla codex, no spoilers yet!*
but for the moment i want to see some more of your airbrush work, its looking great! may i ask if you even highlight them? because they look great without much colour change at all.
Such brilliant talent wasted on lapdogs of the Emperor. *sigh*
I'm impressed not only by the quality of your work, but by the commitment to put that same level of effort into every model in your army. Your force will be amazing on the tabletop and display case. My only lament is that I live too far away to crush it into darkness.

Well D6S school is important dont forget that! Also cant wait to see those too. Do you have a test model or idea how your going to do the vanilla marines?

Skalk not all talent wasted on the emperor. Look what I was working on when I started this thread .
And yes my brother I would love one day to cleanse your army and make you repent your sins to the mighty Emperor!!!
Daemon Eater wrote:Wow! this thread still amazes me everytime I check it out. Really liking the Vets and Belial looks really cool.
I stand corrected. MOST of that talent wasted on the lapdogs of the Emperor.
Wow. That is stunning. Dark, angry, and hateful. That's one of the best Huron models I've seen, and I wouldn't just say that. 30% complete? What's it going to look like when it is done???
Yeah, I totally thought it was done when I picked it up to look at it... (flashback) *musta been when he went in house to get me water and I sneezed and flew it across the garage and landed on the tool chest?*
actually there's a bit of paint missing off his backside eh?

michah52 thank you for chiming in and posting a reply. Thanks for the support!!
dark6spectre wrote:GDO that remains to be seen, its a secret! (i.e. no i havn't done a test model yet, but i have a plan on what i'm going to do.)
on-topic great model, nice grimdark. has it been airbrushed aswell or was it a paintbrush-job?
Ahh saw your thread on the bikes and some of the troops can't wait to see what it looks like painted. As for Huron I only airbrushed the primer and black base.
thanks CL I started him a while back when I did this thread to basically change up my painting green. I was working on my tactical guys and the orks that came with the AOBR box and got burnt out. So I picked up Huron cause he was such a cool sculpt. I enjoyed him too much and looked like a heretic painting him in front of my DA so I placed him in stasis with the orcs till I finish all of my DA.
He was only primed with my airbrush but the rest by normal brush. I hope to finish him and show him off soon but with my LR and FW marines and RW boxes looking at me it might be a while till he see' s light again.
Hey when are going to see a update? I am looking for the next episode of the CL Channel.
Calibanite Lion wrote:I might get at some stuff tomorrow, had some major RL issues latley.
Nah understand brother. Life can slow our hobby or help escape it for a bit. Hang in there and handle what ever is bothering you and will be patient till you post your DA.
As for my self I am trying to squeeze some painting time in be for the UFC fight tonight. I am prepping to do my second base color of VA Iraqi sand and wash it with Gryphonne Sephia. Then my final highlight with VA Iraqi sand.
I will post some pics after the fight for you all if not tomorrow with some details after the highlights.
Ok after the UFC fight last night I was so bummed out that Anderson did a front snap kick to Vitors head and knocked him out in the first round!!!?! I decided to have several more glasses of my fine scotch. Then I was not in the mood to paint. Well anywho this morning got back on my horse and did my first highlight on my termies. I used a 50/50 mix with VA White and VMC Iraqi sand and windex to smooth it out.
Also someone PM'd me (he wanted me to stay un named) and wanted me to see my desk set up and what I have.
So first off I got my desk several years back at Ikea on sale its a pc desk and come in two sizes I got the larger one and the smaller one is about a foot shorter. I also got my chair there.
Take a look at the picture below and dont mind my mess. All of this is in my garage which my wife calls the man cave.
Real nice progress GDO, looking forward to seeing these guys completed. Also looking forward to your black recipe for the RW. I'm starting BT myself so it will be interesting when you begin to paint those little beauties up.
Nice stack of minis btw way, I don't think I'm far behind you myself, I eve have a Stormraven coming and they're not even legal in my list yet. lol

Lenny thanks, I'm too trying to get these done. It's been too long and wish I was in High School again with no worries. But when your 40 you gotta make time and that can be hard too ! As for my recipe for my RW if your talking about black paint recipe I am going to copy Brother Argos's Iron Hands style. Hands down that man made black look even cooler then normal. When he added the weathering to it, I could imagine my RW the same way relentlessly looking for the fallen not caring bout Machine God beating up thier armour.
So take alook at Brother Argos's thread and you too will be a big fan!
Stormraven is sorta growing on me I call it the midgethawk but I don't see it being legal for any other marine chapter (bad marketing on GW). Hope to see your WIP soon.

It'll be legal as soon as Codex DH is released in April as an ally. But to be honest that wont stop people adding them to their forces I mean just look at the LR Crusader, when it first came out it was BT only, even the fluff stated that it was developed by the BT specifically, then wouldn't you know it an errata makes it legal for all.
Brother Argos, I second that, been a fan since he began that thread really great work. Got the idea to drill the backs of ML from his thread, can't think why I never thought of it before to be honest.
As for trying to make time, I agree. Its no small coincidence that I've improved as a painter since I returned to education. I was a chef for 9years and that really screws with your leisure time, let me tell you, lol.
dark6spectre wrote:Come On! i want to so see those bikes assembled and the tank! lets move it!
how many termies are you going to collect? are you going towards a deathwing/ravenwing army thing?
Yea I need to get a hustle on it cause with my DW and assault marines and the pace I been going it will be summer soon ! Yes as for the DW army yea I am going that route but just adding a variety of options for different games. Maybe once I prime my 5 assault marines I will start assembling my RW or LR.
really nice lookin deathwing you go there ^_^
thanks for the chart too, i'll be needing that once i start to use Vallejo and finaly stop using GW paint....
cant wait to see whats next ^_^
oh how did you do the weathering on the pred? was it grey paints with some black and silver?
Guys and gals sorry been stasis for a bit, too many family events been happening, my great aunt who was a 100yrs old passed, relatives/friends birthday parties and my nephew's first ameteur MMA fight and work....uggh!!! !! Also it's been pretty cold in NorCal so my garage has not been to hospitable for painting. But I promise to get back on my attack bike and start rolling soon.
Thanks to all who still view my thread wow thats alot of views for little posting.

Yup as seen in earlier posting the LR and RW is ready to be assembled soon. I just gotta finish my DW.

WarPetrie thanks for tuning in! Let me know if you have any other questions on the Vallejo paints regarding your DW and as for weathering I use basic chaos black and then silver. The mud effects are Vallejo pigments using Vallejo matte varnish and gloss varnish with water and then go crazy. The pigments will be a wet muddy look and then dry. If you are looking for a wetter look use gloss varnish or floor wax like Mop and Glow. This will dry with a gloss look to the mud.
Ok fans and friends will get snapping and I just wanted to let everyone know I am still kicking and was'nt eaten up by a feral squig!
Hey everyone sorry for the long time away. I been some what busy building my Land Raider and not much painting.
So I basically am done building my LR and I also ordered some Vallejo Air paints ready for my Ravenwing project as soon as I am done with my DW. So here is a small update on my build. I hope you like it.
HAZZER wrote:wow these are really good tat AOBR sargent dient look like him untill you said!and nice use of spary painting
HAZZER thanks it was my first attempt at the colors and airbrushing my DW. That squad was my experiment which was the base of my new squad you currently see. Now its got a slighter brighter look due to highlighting methods I picked up from Massive Vodoo. I will try to post more soon so stay tune.
Ok another small update. I magnatized my comm unit on my LR and drilled out the gun barrels. I also started painted 2 more Termies. I will try to finish these two by the end of the week . Lets pray I do !

Thanks HAZZER! No they where airbrushed with Vallejo Model Iraqi Sand and washed with GW Sephia. No they are not completely done I am trying to do a assembly line painting and need to still detail most of it. If you look back at the Lightning Claw and Cyclone Missle Launcher marine thats how they will look when they are done.
So stay tune for more.
Awesome DW terminators! I imagine it must be pretty quick to spray down the minis then the color layers on top to simulate the highlights. I'm picking up an Iwata Eclipse Double Action this month... I see that you use both GW and Vallejo Air paints. Can Vallejo Air go straight into the airbrush as-is? I've read that most other paints (ie. GW) require some sort of windex/water combo to cut it down before shooting through the airbrush? Any tips to share with an airbrush newb?
Thanks, and sorry about going a bit off-topic, but the results look really great on your figures!
Yowzaah got a whole bunch of emails for this thread this weekend and holy angels batman that land raider is going to be a beast! Great work Greydeathone wish I had some talent like that. Cant download the fluff at work but will do it when I get home.
fasteddiexx1 wrote:Awesome Job man, You sure got the DW colors down. Can't wait to see the LR done, let me know if you need some of my armor model mags for some ideas.
Yup you know I will if I need to. But already got a idea and this is not no princess Landraider this beast been through some fields of battle and some tech marine is crying back at the Rock cause its overdue for some blessing from the machine god. Well we all know that god is on the bottom of the list!

NP mate! Also thanks for tunining in. Well for GW yes I use Windex to thin down the p
aint and as for VA its straight from the bottle. Also congrats on the Iwata ypu will love using your airbrush. You will love the fact that you can prime and base and highlight with it and reduce your time by more then half the time traditional brush would. But you will still need to detail and some highlights with a brush but thays not a problem knowing you did most of the base by airbrush.
Tips for a new guy well go to Les Bursley and Rom of Massive Voodoo. These two helped me alot and if you need more tips PM me and more then happy to assist.

DE your a loyal follower and thank you again. As for talent trust me it took awhile for me to get at this level and if we had youtube back in the 80's I would be like Yellow eye now lol!! So like the old saying goes keep a open mind and practice practice and more practice. PM me anytime if you have any questions.
Ok folks lets see if I can get some painting in when I get home. Thank you all for following or just lurking and at 7k hits I am suprised. See you all soon.
Thanks for the tips GDOne! I'm excited to get the airbrush too... I watch AwesomePaintJob on youtube as well. I'll be sticking around to see what you do, and get some inspiration from here! I like both your standard DA green and DWs, but the smooth coats on the DWs are pretty awesome. Keep it up!

No problem man. If you want a good tutorial on highlighting go to Massive Voodoo and search under tutorial. He does a great tutorial on it. Well it's been a busy week at work and had no brain power to paint . I actually sat at my desk and stared at my models for 20min and did nothing. Well lets hope I get some motivation and do some painting tonight.

HAZZER I woiuld love to but I don't have that kind of time to do a Vid tutorial. Maybe a picture one in the future. Till then I can assist anybody where I can.
I was just thinking of a pic toutral (I find those the best eslicaly on Dakka! beacuse if you have any quireys you can normaly just ask or pm them!)thanks anyway no worries
HAZZER well I will see if I can make some time to do one. I will see if I can pick up a AOBR terminator set online and do a tutorial.
Ok small update. fasteddiexx1 came over and we did a paint session in my garage. He brought over his really cool Stormraven conversion and wanted to me to see his progress on his scratch built twin auto cannon for me. Well I realized I did not post my cyclone missle termie so take a look and tell me what you think. I still have a few touch up and place the DA icon on the shoulder. I also started to finish up my first SS/TH termie and 2nd LC termie. So here it goes.
Cool but stormravens are for blood angels thier sucsessors and the inqusion only!!!I like how you make such a cool ship fit in with such a cool army!Fiinlly somone except me is bending the rules for stupid gw and thier"leagal and eleagal" rules.(im only saying they are stupid beacause of when i go into the stores and had a really bad time at warhammere world)

Well house rules are ok don't let the rule book thumpers/lawers stop you from building one. You gotta look at it from a LR Crusader POV. It use to be only legal for Black Templars but look now. Also it will be a bad marketing for them if they keep it that way. So no worries, go out and build it, I know I will ( well fasteddiexx1 will ) Look at all the galleries there are alot of dakka folks building it for thier chapters.
WarPetrie wrote:Nice looking Deathwing ^_^ i really like the bone color of Vallejo to bad I havent been able to get any paints yet to try it out myself
Is it cause there is no local stores that sell it?
No there is, I just havent been able to go down and buy some XD I guess I could order it online from them...but since I havent boughten any Vallejo paints before I'd like to see what the actuall color looks like and see how much it compares to the GW ones.
Absolutely wicked lightning claws! The hammer guy is looking good too- I noticed the wear on his armor, are you planning on going a bit further with it- metal underneath/grey highlights? Keep it up- I'll be getting myself some masking tape type stuff and probably plasticard to make stencils.
I just got my airbrush and compressor in today! It's pretty awesome looking, but I'll be trying it out this weekend when I get test models from storage (read- tonight, on a perfectly good mini that I'll regret)
I've got a question about "cutting the paint" with Windex. For layering and feathering, or just any painting, really, I usually get the paint to the consistency of "skim milk". I haven't seen or had that in more than a decade, but I think I got the idea. How about for airbrushes? Is is the same? Even thinner? Thicker? Any ideas as to ratios for GW acrylics/water/windex?
Thanks in advance, and keep churning out the DWs. It's a live tutorial/benchmarker for me!

Thanks man. Yup going to do more detail on the weathering but trying to get most of the basic parts down and doing a assembly type painting.
As for thining paints I use windex to thin the paints. Its got a "flash" property that helps in the drying of the paint. As for formula in thining it depends in temp and humidity. Not to sound technical but you gotta experiment. I usealy use 1:1 ratio with GW or Vallejo. Some colors you will notice is thicker so you will use more windex. So remember test spray on a paper towel or something smooth so you can see if you got the right consistancy.
So experiment with some paint you dont care to waste and do some practice with your new airbrush to get use to it.
Good luck and have fun.
Hey Dakka folks! Well my stressfull job is no more, the company did a nationwide elimination of the role I was in. Now I have more time to paint and look for a new job. Well nuff of the downer I manage to squeeze some painting last weekend and today. I got to prime my assault guys and detail and complete 90% of 1 termie and 70% of one.
I am planing to prime my Landraider this week and start on it when my Vallejo 60mil primer gets in.
I hope to be posting more now that I have been laid off and see if I can squeeze in a photo tutorial on my DW. So here is my small update.
Eep... sorry to hear about your company downsizing... but we get to see more of the DWs... so I shouldn't complain all too much...
And yes, a photo tut would be excellent, as I'm playing around with the airbrush but I've decided to stop til I build a proper spray booth. I'm not sure if you posted it anywhere else on the thread, but do you know how many pts your DW army is going to be?
Good luck on your job search, and looking forward to more!
**Edit**
Oh yea... I forgot to ask- I notice a lot of painters do that- sticking figures on top of bottles for ease of painting/adjustments. What do you use to stick them on there? Blu-tac? I'm definitely going to try that out as I hate the paint scratch-off from gripping the bases themselves.

Thanks brother yea got to dust off my resume and start spaming the job sites. As for a spray booth a simple cardboard box and a lazy suzan I got from Ikea for 20 bucks and what I use to hold my figures on my bottles is poster tac/blue tac.
As for point wise for my DW I am looking over 1700. Just to have a variety of options since I did not magnitize my guys.
Do a youtube search on Tamiya Tanks and you will get a idea on just a cardboard box or check my youtube under Greydeath and its on my favorites.
WOW this is great work. The Vanguard Vets in particular look excellent, as do the lightning claws and sword blades. I'll be keeping an eye on this one!

Well I decided to stop by my new stomping grounds at Legends in Cupertino and drown my misery there and buy something. So I bought a box of.....errr ummmm coughchoasspacemaines*! Yea Skalk I know I know, my talents wasted on the emperior but I got a buyer for Huron and a squad so he is sold at the moment. So since I am unemployed why not do commissions. So I will start a new thread on other then DA stuff soon.
Well see you guys soon.
Hello Dakka peeps! I gotta new update and with fasteddiexx1 coming over for another paint session and running to the hobby store to pick up the new issue of White Dwarf, I manage to get somethings done. I got to finish up kost of my Sgt. TH/SS termie and my LC termie. Still some weathering and touch up jere and there but pretty much done. I also got to test out Vallejo Paint primer Black in the 60mil bottle and wow what a great paint for airbrushing. I highly recomend it for every one. My land raider turned out great for just priming.
I also based and washed my regular assault marines also. I hope to get all these guys done its been too long and cant wait to get them in a game.
Well nuff talk check it out hope you all like.
Hey greydeathone I just went through your whole post and you've got a great army in the making. Looks like you've got a good handle on the airbrush, the power weapons looks great. Keep posting your progress and as others have said, good luck with your job hunt. Since you're in the area, you should apply for a job at the infinite loop!

Eggroll thanks brother! Also thanks for the lead at Infinite Loop . Yea It was a pass around the resume day from google to PG&E.
Did'nt get any painting or hobby done, maybe I will tonight I will start on the Landraider .

Cool, finally somebody nearby.
Cool we gotta hook up one day. I gotta get some games in and get use to 5th ed. So far my buddy anf I got a few games in at 500pts games to get a feel of it. But would be nice to get in a few with a new army.
I just been trying to get most of my guys painted up so they are all not gray troops on the table.
Ok my Dakka friends sorry it's been a while, as some of you know I had a commission for a squad of Red Corsairs and Huron. Ok nuff about chaos traitors I am back on the rock and working on my Deathwing and hopefully start assembling my Ravenwing .
Ok here is my quick update.
WarPetrie wrote:lookin pretty good. did you cut the back of the hood for your Belial so it would fit the termi?
Yea alot of filing on the backside of the head and test fitting. I wish GW will go to true scale soon. The heads seem to vary in scale and compared to the helmet the head is too small.
ok smaller update here is my progress,I a highlighted the head and started detailing Belial and the thunder hammer termie. But man got lots of touch ups.
Ok another smaller update Belial is about 85% done. I need to do touch ups, highlights and details.
I am trying to complete the five terminators by the end of the week so I can start on my Ravenwing well enjoy dakka peeps.
HAZZER wrote:Nice fainally your back onto dark angels!
how do you do your lighting claws?
Yup back on the rock and manufacturing DA again .
As for the the lightning claws its a 3 step process. Brush GW enchanted blue, then airbrush GW ice blue half way blending it. Then the final step is using Vallejo air white on the tip blending it into the ice blue.
Airbrushing is easier then wet blending in my opinion. The downside with airbrushing is the prep work but pays off in the end.
Good luck and let me know if you got more questions.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:Dark Angels again. Well, I suppose it couldn't be helped.
How's that whole "search for the Fallen" thing going? Ha.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work, even if it is wasted on lapdogs of the Imperium.
Skalk buddy ol pal. Yea back on the imperium side again. Did you see my other thread on he Red Corsairs? That should make you proud. Here you go if you have not seen the updated and completed project. http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/358034.page
I did see that, was bummed it was a commission job. I was hoping that you'd seen the truth about the Emperor and I think that for you nothing could have been more fitting than joining the Red Corsairs.
how's fasteddiexx1 doing? Tell him I said "DEATH TO THE FALSE EMP..". wait... I mean "hi".
GreyDeathOne wrote:Ok here is another update. I have placed my first 2 base colors and building up from dark to light. I will brush in washes and detail but I am taking more time on this squad and want them to come out better then the last. Hope you like the progress.
So, let me get this right.
- Black Primer
- Graveyard Earth Basecoat
- Iraqi Sand Zenithal Layer
- Wash
And that's it? Up until what we see in those pictures? I know there's some brush highlighting afterwards, right?

Well I am too I love the Huron paint job and the whole story line on him. Well as for Fasteddie well typical evil chaos folks he is always around the corner since he already answered As for me still unemployed but kinda like the more time to myself at the moment. I was all stressed but settled down and being Mr. Mom at the moment.

Exactly! The wash I use is GW Gryphon Sephia which is just right of a shade for me and not to dark. Remember if you apply too much wash just go over it again with Iraqi Sand and pick a light source point where the light is coming from. For a better understanding go to Massive Voodoo
this is a great site and this is where I have been learning my techniques from.
http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/10/tutorial-overview.html
Then you can start detailing your figure ! Sorry for the late response.
Popsicle no problem brother it's all yours lol ! Man if we had youtube or the internet 27 years ago I would be a Michael Angelo . And anything to help anybody out that is what I am here for and I love to share what I learned with this community. Enjoy brother!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok dakka another small update. Belial is 95% done just his targeting lens and weathering but pretty much done. I am planning to do a batch weathering on the last couple termies and concentrate on the basic parts.I got caught up with my chaplain and kinda ignored the other two .
Oh yea Fasteddiexx1 dropped of my garage kit twin linked auto cannon for my dred I have ignored for months but looks sweet!! Thanks again brother.
Ok let me know what you guys think.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Ok that was wierd I did a new post and for some reason it edited and added to my last post !?! Oh well thats what I get for posting and doing everything on my phone instead of my pc . Well folks look above and let me know what you guys think.

Hey, gery death one
How about when you have finshed you dark angles you make some of the fallen? That would look great and what about doing an army shot?
Hello dakka peeps here is another update and this time I am done with my Deathwing.
I will weather the last 5 guys on my spare time while I work on my venerable drednought which I been ignoring since I started this last squad of terminates . I am not to happy with the paint job but will work with it. Friday night I had a paint session at fasteddiexx1's apartment and got some of my squad done there along with a pint or two to steady our hands . Anywho here you guys go, and let me know what you guys think.

How about your swords?
HAZZER are you asking how I do my swords? If so it is the same process but originally I used the chrome look using black, blue, and white. But now I will use white, ice blue, and enchanted blue.
For reference go to Les Bursley YouTube channel and look at the space wolf episode or buypainted channel.
Good luck.
Damn- It's been way too long since I've been back! Crazy-ass grad finals were sucking up all of my time.
Dude, that is awesome you guys can actually paint together. Whenever my younger cousin and his friends try and do that, it just degenerates into a drinking fest... lol...
That, and I've got way too many tools to shuttle there and back.
Question- yours is kindofa version of Zenithal lighting, no? Everything up to the black starting color...
And question#2- for your Corsairs, you're using Vallejo Model Air Red, right? Kind of a wierd question, but what kind of a red is it- a colder more blue/purple red or a warmer orange-red?
I'm trying to figure out how to base coat my PH Thousand Sons using my airbrush and (possible) zenithal lighting.

Thanks HF Iz Yea we keep the pints down to a minimum and I just haul what I need to finish a model or two. So what you saw on my side of the table is what I brought and anything I did not bring I borrowed and fasteddiexx1 has tons of extra .
To your first question yes it's a zenithal style choosing the light direction and working up the color from a black base.
And your 2nd question the color I use is Vallejo Model Air Scarlet Red. I used a black prime due to I did not want the red bright. And since reds, yellows are transparent (in any type of paints) using a dark color tone it down.
One thing to remember is that VA Scarlet Red is very thin so apply thin layers and work up to the tone you want.
Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.
DarkStarSabre wrote:Having just read through I will say - wow! The bone colour on those Deathwing is just superb
Thanks for tuning in ! Yea after experimenting with the colors and techniques I think I got it down. It's a bit of a process but very happy how it turned out.
Ok guys and gals another small update. After ignoring my ven dred for months due to some bad molds in detail and priming it with a rattle can I was frustrated how it came out and did not want to scrub it down and start all over again so I made the best of what I got.
I am sorta pleased with it and with more weathering it should look better.
I also forgot to do the banner for Belial and played with that for a bit. Still gotta do some highlights and detail on it but good start.
Let me know what you guys think.
prime12357 wrote:The dread looks really sharp, though I think it could use a little more red to balance out the green.
Thanks prime12357. Well I been trying to stay away from the Christmas color motif and trying not to add too much red . But I appreciate the imput, RAFF has been a inspirational on my theme and style for my DW. I am a long way from his level .
Imperial Monkey wrote:you need to add the white break in the deathwing logo both on the dread's arm and belial's banner...
Imperial Monkey thanks for tuning in. Well as for the "white break" if you mean on the outline of the logo, well that will be too bright for what I am looking for. I am looking for a pre green/heresey theme when they use to be all black. Kinda like relics of the pass that is still paying honor to the past. I am from the Rouge Trader days and if you do a search the color scheme was black with red emblem. Thats why it was also upsetting the artist did not get it right in the Heresey books on the front cover. !
But thanks for the imput anyways .
Ok folks another update. I had to do something different to keep me motivated and started on my Landraider ! Yes I was looking forward to this for a while.
I purchased Scibor armour plate things and glued it on and well it looks good .
Let me know what you guys think.
This is what i mean in the logo there is a break in the sword (can't remember the back story) although i don't know if it was like thsat in rouge trader days...too young
Imperial Monkey ahhhhhh the break in the sword ! Yea will add that tiny detail on the dred but for Belial banner well the sroll is in the way. Lets just say it's behind it .
Nice land raider! The armor plates look pretty cool.A nice change for someone not using forge world!
I never noticed Scibor did 40k bits in descise.Well I know that they do mini's and call them "cletic"dudes. There pretty perfect for space wolfs though!
Been a while since i checked your thread, looks like i have some catching up to do lol. Liking the scibor plates and the dread is cool aswell. too much new stuff for me to pick put any one thing though. great progress!

Yea you missed alot but not much. I have been distracted with a commission job of Red Corsairs I posted also on another thread and now back on my Dark Angels so I can finish them and start on my Grey Knights.
Well good to have you back and can't wait to see your classic DA's.
Ok dakka friends another update. Hope you all had a great Memorial Day and paid respects to our fallen arm service men and women around the world. As a veteran myself it was a great weekend.
Ok I finally got to work on my Landraider since this weekend was a bit busy but manage to squeeze a game with fasteddiexx1. A 1500pt game and my Dark Angels spanked his Ultra Marines !
Well here is my progress. I did more details and weathering by airbrushing the vents and painting the view ports. I hope you all like it.
prime12357 wrote:Nice! the bone looks great across the entire LR, though the green seems a little isolated to me.
Thanks prime12357. Yea it is but I did not want to get to carried away with the green. I was and maybe will follow the green straight down to the tracks, but the gold trimming kinda looks odd if I go past the Scibor plate with more green. But after more weathering we will see? . Thanks for the input I will still consider it .
Looking goog, i actually managed some painting myself this week, nothing noteworthy but getting back into it, i also have a land raider ready to start painting i like the relief panels, where are they from? sorry if you have already mentioned ( didnt read all the words lol )

You shame me and my lack of attention to my Death Guard Land Raider! That was fast and it looks AWESOME! All of your work is so clean and sharp, you genuinely have my respect (even though I do poke at you for being an Imperial shill. )

Ahhh Skalk my evil nurgle brother, I know you must admit *Skalk pukes in his mouth as he utters the words* the imperium side is better .
Lol ok all laugh aside thanks. What you do with green stuff is amazing. And with the old Rouge Trader figures in your army that adds character and not so generic like todays army. So keep up the great work .
Just beautiful work right there my friend! such a nice bone colour you can achieve, it really looks fantastic on everything you've done, clean and ornate without being dirty or looking old, the green on your marines is excellent too, a touch more olive than i'm used to seeing but it may just be the camera?
and don't get me started on your Terminators! they're some of my favorite deathwing i've seen! those claws are amazing!
Your Landraider is an excellent piece of work, and is coming along great! I like the additions and placing of your spot colour and can totally understand the fear of the dreaded 'christmas tree' marines but I think you're doing fine! :-) the Scibor armour plates look great too, I never actually realised what the plates on the site actually fitted! duh! now I'm keen to try something myself!
I may need to pm you and ask some airbrush advice later tonight, we'll see how I go for time! :-)
Nerdfest09 thank you brother. The olive color is correct good eye. The idea basically came from through Forgeworld armour book on the Death Korps of Krieg. The color of the DA gave it a real look and not animated/cartoonish look. Don't get me wrong I love the deep dark green but I believe it drowns out the detail and I am not to big on hard lining.
Hey when I start my other veterans squad and Ravenwing I will have to borrow your amazing technique on your eye lens . That method at any distance gives it a realism I am looking for.
Anywho thanks again and yea PM me anytime.
Dot you need "ba ba ba ba" in front of that? And, "It" instead of this?Or "Grey death ones My Dark Angels WIP(Update 05/25/11)"? Lol? Are you confused enouth? HAZZER (? ? ?)

Yes GDO! long time no speak!, great to see some more progress from you (last time i went on Dakka was February )
Great LR you got there, loving the Resin detail . i'll see if i can actually do some 40k this summer, i've just been busy with school and stuff. But i'm hoping to get an evening job so i can pick up the budget and buy all the hobby tools i need =D.
Good luck with your projects as well! D6S
I have an idea if it's something you can accommodate- how about doing a "everything from this project so far" group shot? Would like to see how everything has come together and what your force is looking like.
And I second a pic. From what I can see, you've got a pretty sizeable force of DAs, Deathwing or otherwise. Could we see them altogether?
-Remi (HF Iz)
Remi well 2 weekends ago fasteddiexx1 and I battled it out and after I did parade my guys on my table.
The picture is ok and had to take a few pics to get them in.
Enjoy.
LOL, that's a great-looking army you've got going on there! I'm jealous- how long have you been collecting that, or did it start the same time as your blog?

my bad but soncka did post the orgnail post with the "ba ba ba ba I'm loveing this"!Ha!Take that !Lol! @Grey death one-lets hope it was a great game! Those guys look so good on the tabe top!
That's a very impressive force you have there! Really detailed and sharp. I especially enjoyed the scenery, too. Your table looks like a lot of fun to play on.
How you going with the lenses dude? had a chance to play with them yet? your army is looking great! I love the army shots on the table, a Dark Angels force as well done as what you've got is a DAMN impressive looking force! you really know how to tie all the muted colours together in a delicious pot of dusky olive savagery and bone white thunderous death, purging the fallen from the darkest depths they hide in each and every corner of our emperor cursed galaxy... Ahhhh space marines are just so poetic :-) and your painting brings them to life! i'm jealous of your skills my friend, well done as always!

Thanks Remi well I had about 30 plus marines back in the 90's but sold them to a young DA collector who just started and I was caught up club racing and did not want my army go to waste but was left with a squad which is part of my force now . As for collecting well that goes back before rouge trader days and when that came out in 87' fasteddiexx1 and I was pretty full blast on it But yes several months before I started the blog I had to get back in the hobby when I saw the what was new back then the DA battle force. That was like sold!!!! And now here I am with about 2600pts of guys and growing along with my Grey Knights on standby .

Nerdfest09
Nerdfest09 well almost got it as you will see below. I will most definitely use your techniques on my up coming guys and Ravenwing (if I don't get distracted) I love how yours turned out.
Also thanks and don't be jealous you got a striking legion your self there. It is nice to have a legion besides mine patrolling the eye of terror .
Just visit the many great community websites like this one and learn the techniques you find attractive and add it to yours. To tell you the truth it has only been a year where I learned most of my techniques from Les, the other grey_death, Massive Voodoo, Orcpainternerd and now buypainted. And I thought I knew how to paint
Ok guys sorry it has been really slow for me due to my youngest daughter is now out of kindergarten and now on summer break and UFC, F1, 24hrs of Le Mans my weekend was shot . So I have been working on fasteddiexx1's commission of Calgar and my old death and now a veteran marine. Here he is its not much but let me know what you think.
Liking the progress GreyDeath. If I may pick your brains; how did you go about painting the robes? For my own DA I'm thinking Bestial - Bubonic - Bleached Bone with maybe a wash somewhere in between to tie the two browns together?
dark6spectre wrote:nice lense! one thing i have noticed though is the bolter is drooping slightly (stupid metal minis!)

D6S thanks to Nerdfest09 who showed me the light! And yea I call him limpy and needs to fill the bolter with viagra !

Keep up the good work!
L. Wrex
Lycaeus Wrex thank you!! Sure you can pick it Well I use GW Graveyard Earth and GW Bone White with a wash of GW Gryphon Sephia.
Of course blending the Graveyard Earth and Bone White. The Sephia ties it in all together.
If you have troubles blending please go to my original idol of days gone past of GW.
Looking good Greydeathone! you did a great job on his lenses! we should pm the crap out of each other and swap techniques! i'm keen to learn how to use my damn airbrush without speckling! you have such nice models dude, it's always a great feeling when i see you've updated it's like christmas for me! :-)
I should be updating again soon, I popped a small w.i.p one up tonight but nothing too special.
keep it up my friend! and thank you for giving me props! I appreciate it and i'm very grateful!
@nerdfest09 no problem brother I will pm you my email later.
If I am correct you got a single stage Pasche? Let me know.
Ok I am 90 % done with my veteran marine and was on a painting frenzy. I based my other squad of veterans and working on Calgar for fasteddiexx1's army.
Well enjoy.
Haha, glad someone missed me. I've been completing my final university dissertation so had to focus and forego some of the little pleasures in life, like dakka. All done now though so should be able to catch up with what my favourite dakkites have been putting out.

You spelled my username wrong! Curse you!
LOL...
Awesome work as always, man. How long does it usually take to finish a figure, say a standard SM? Any tips for speed painting, that don't sacrifice quality? Or am I just kidding myself and should just go back to slugging away at the models...?
Remi well for speed and quality I recommend a airbrush. And yea it can be a big investment up front but speeds things quickly. Just remember when you first got in the hobby when you brushed your primer on (if you ever did) then started using a rattle can primer and saw how fast it was. Well with a airbrush you can prime, base and highlight .
Again please don't get caught up with name brands for your first airbrush just get a decent double action airbrush. Look at my old post or pm me for info.
Hey everyone I'm baaaack ! Well as some of you know I took a break from the hobby and now back in the groove slowly.
After playing the Space Marine video game on Xbox I got the mojo back .
Ok quick update sine I did not post on this thread in a while I completed my 5 man veteran squad, working on a color scheme for a model fasteddiexx1 got me for painting his Calgar and it's a great sculpt from Hytech Miniatures, and just bought a jet bike from my local game store Game Kastle. It's made from Kromlech and what a throw back design with a gothic feel.
So I will keep you postd soon I promise. Enjoy some the pictures below. I also updated my gallery for clearer pictures of the vets. Please vote.
I really like the look of the jetbike. It looks almost orky to me. An entire nob biker army sounds fun. Of course, an entire jetbike-mounted marine army would be awesome too. Keep the updates coming!
Whew... thought I was ignoring this one... but good to see that I came back just as the post came by. Love it... is that final mini a Scibor? I bought a different char model for my PH 1K Sons army, but then figured he wasn't right. Recycling him as a b-day present to my cousin for his BA army...
Also, Space Marine is amazing... Love it. And agree with Prime- that bike is pretty effin' sweet. Looks like a flying battering ram.

Thanks prime. Yea it can look orky if you add more exhaust pipess and big teeth in front .
It does have a Pre Heresey look to it and beter then the Rouge Trader ones back in the 80's .
Well thanks prime for tuning in.

Remi hey good to here from you . The model is from Hytech Miniatures and thier models are to scale to GW. Scibor scale I call Primarch scale from what the stories say they are larger then regular space marines. You should check that site out when you get a chance.
Glad you like the jetbike too. Yea it will hurt if your in front of it when you get nailed .
Ok quick update for you all. I was caught up on the Kromlech jet bike and got most of it done and I would say 80% done just some highlights and detail also decals.
Happy Friday peeps enjoy.
Hey everyone a pretty busy weekend of UFC free fight night, finishing my attack bike and building my Ravenwing finally also got a small 525pt game with fasteddie. I got my powered armour ass handed to me by a bunch of smurfs .
Oh well you win some and you lose some.
Ok here is some pics enjoy.
vent wrote:That is one awesome Jetbike. I'm gonna have to get me a couple of those & those Sternguard look Mint. Great job!
Vent thank you for tuning in ( love your models in your completed gallery) yea my local store had a few and decided to pick one and not to make it too busy by adding too much stuff too it.
I will do up a driver and take some pics with him on it and post it n my gallery.
Yes, yes you should, do up a driver and post him up.....now,......go on! stop procrastinating on Dakka and do it! or i'll call fasteddie and make him stop fondling his smurfs to make sure you do it!
and while you're at it i'd love to see some more shots of your gaming mat and how you painted it but no pressure.....
Oh, and I'll need fasteddie's number too, so I can call him........
Hey I only fondle them because I have to hold them to paint them.... By the way Nerdfest love your work man, it's damn TOPPS!!!I think you could give GD1 a run for his unemployment money both you guys keep up the awesome work or I will have nothing to inspire me....

Oh man my sons friend had a issue with his Nissan 240sx and was working on it till 10pm !!
That cut into my hobby time. Oh well thats what happens when working on cars and racing them is one of your other hobbies. I will airbrush one up soon but for now here is a close upof the battle mat and I painted it up with fasteddie with our airbrush which was done in a few hours. Then drybrushed and washed with vallejo black wash. Lol you should harrass fasteddie to finish his smurfs He has more time on his hands and I manage to finish more marines! ! He is gonna kill me for saying that lol!!

Hey dudes! I really like the zuzzy mat, seems most appealing to me as far as price, looks and quality go I can put up with the smell of rubber as I used to own a very sweet nissan 180sx myself and that used to get very *ahem* rubbery all the time, mind you I was a lot younger back then too! I believe in Aus our import 180sx's were your guys 240sx's just with a good motor in it not a bucket of crap? I have some old pics if you're interested?
Thanks Fasteddie I am glad you like what i'm doing! if I can inspire you to mediocrity then my work here is done but rest assured now you're in the friend loop, I'm gonna be the biggest paint in the ass to get you finishing the smurfs! it's funny how we call them smurfs and the sergeants have red helmets..... hello papa smurf anyone
Glad you like it here is the link to zuzzy http://www.zuzzy.com/ . As for the 180sx I believe you guys down under got the japanese engines the sr20 well we yanks got ripped off with a truck engine!?!.
I would loveto see some pics of your old car. Well as you remembered I got a Ford Mustang GT and there is no replacement for displacement! 4.6 liters of fun. BTW you a Holden or Ford fan? I am a big Super V8 fan and wish we Americans got into that series of racing. NASCAR sucks they only do two road courses all season...oval racing blaaaahhhch!
Holden! Ford! yuck! down under they are the worst cars ever! such poor quality builds! you pay heaps for them and they are always falling apart! nope dude, i'm a Honda fan all the way! :-) but as you will see in your in box i've tinkered with some others, but I can't beat Honda quality and reliabilty! and yep, we got the good sr20det in our 180's and I mean no disrespect, but, Nya na na na na na! :-) I'm currently looking for a 7th gen accord euro sports, mmmm lovely! nothing says great car like heated leather seats on a cold morning! lol
Automatically Appended Next Post: My mini's deserve to transported in style and luxury!

Wow really both are that bad over there?!?! Crazy! Well I got nothing against ricers but to drop several thousands of dollars just to get the horsepower you need you might as well strip it down and put a roll cage and make it FIA legality for some class to run in !
BTW nice pics of your cars I got the PM that Skyline sick sick wish it came here when the models where new.
As for Honda's yea its true the model your looking at was badged here in the US as a TSX. Nice car very nice.
HAZZER wrote:nice stuff gits,
and also where did you get that mat from?
HAZZER whats up man its been a while! Thanks glad you like it and I posted a link early of Zuzzys site..
Glad you still dropping in and checking my thread thanks brother.
Ok this will be my second time posting this till my phone fubar'd it and all was lost I been tied up fixing my son and his best friends cars for Autocrossing this winter and also a side gig painting a 3D printer model but the sculpt had a rough texture that the 3D printer left on the model that made painting a challenge. Anywhoooo.....
I manage to prime and basecoat my Ravenwing bikes and shoulder pads of the marines. Now I got a assembly line of parts of the riders off the sprue ready to assemble and prep for painting.
I will be using Brother Argos's painting style for my Ravenwing and hope it comes out half as good as his Iron Hands.
Here are some boring pics of my process
Robes are looking good Grey. One question is how did you manage to get the robed legs assembled off the bikes? When I did mine, I found I couldn't fit the robed legs onto the bike without assembling them attached. Couldn't get the clearance needed between the leg gaps to slide them in.

Eggroll thanks brother yea with the wash on the robes I can now blend it and highlight it.
As for assembling the robed legsoff the bike I also noticed that and was like wtf?!? Bit with a little brute force it sat in and nothing broke. So with the second one while the glue was still curing I placed it on the bike then pulled it back off. This gave me a decent gap that did not require orcish force to place him back on the bike. The odd gap under the crotch area was filled with putty and will not be that noticeabledue to he will be sitting on it.
Hope this helped you. Hey when are you going to crack open that Stormraven box?????? I love your work and hope to see more when your school stuff settles down.
Eggroll here is a picture of the robe legs on the bike. And this is the first one I assembled and realized how tight the fit was and as you can see no problem. I have removed it about 3 times drom the bile and no signs of stress or breakage.
Try to force it a bit and it will slide in. Let me know if you have anymore problems.
Also here is the rider for my jetbike due to the robed legs did not fit snug. I threw on a Maxmini knight head on it to give a pre heresey look..
Looks excellent GD1 can't wait to see them progress more! and i'm guessing when you said 'drom the bile' you meant 'from the bike'? :-) although mind you that'd be a great name for a nurgle character! lol!
keep painting bro, I'm itching for more! maybe you should get fasteddie around have a session? have you kicked him in his little smurf balls yet? :-) that thought always makes me smile!

Thanks for the spell check NF09 . Yea I do all my updates on my phone and sometimes dont pay attention but at least you got it Yea been trying to get my RW done quickly its been too long sitting on my shelf . I will hopefully get most of the riders assembled and primed soon.
As for kicking fasteddie's nuts on painting his smurfs or gaming no progress yet. Stay tune.
Legs looking good and thanks for the tip. I'll have to try it out if I get more bikes. Also, for the storm raven I'll probably get to that in a few months. Got plenty in the queue at the moment
Ok small update. I got the jetbile pilot mounted and finishing some weathering details and playing with Brother Argos's style and also working on the base I got from ID WORKS and making a custom clear peg to have the bike leaning to the right. Here is my progress enjoy.
Looks damn promising GD1, can't wait to see him all done! and that base is really nice, i'd never heard of them before! i'll have to go check them out! the black armour is looking good too! :-)
Wow. I don't even know where to begin. My main focus is the mat. I have been asking the wife to OK the $$$ for an airbrush (have been working on a lot of terrain) but she keeps telling me I have been riding my "airbrush" all summer (along with anything else I wanted to buy...).
The jetbike looks amazing as well. Everything you do is amazing. But you already knew I thought that, I achieved "GD1 Fanboy" status a long time ago.

Thanks NF09 . Yea they been out for a while and can't remember who they are partnered up with I think its Scibor or Micro Art Studios but damn those polish can sculpt.

the same way Samie does on his flying dictionary jetbike .
