Some of you may recognize me from another forum that I post on regularly. I thought it high time to start posting up my collections and commissions on Dakka as well.
Instead of focusing this thread on one particular army, or line of models, I intend for this blog to be a mixed menagerie of the weird and wonderful.
But what should I introduce myself with? How about my two favourite models?
This fella seems very popular. I have completed four versions of him now and i'm getting quite good a it.
MEPHISTON LORD OF DEATH
Like most people, I’ve become rather taken with the 8th. Getting swept up in all the excitement, I decided to revisit my first love, the Druchii. With dreams of conquest, riches and slaughter, Cynath Ch’Ill, or Kynathis Ch'hll (pronounced Kai-Nath-Is) the Bastard Prince of Naggarond sallies forth at the head of his household.
Cynath Ch'ill, the Disgraced Prince of Naggarond. W.I.P

This model is really special to me.The basis of this model was the first Dark Elf model I bought and has been my general for over twelve years. This is my fourth version of the Black Prince and is nearly complete. I wanted to convey a sense of pomposity, superiority and arrogance. The pose is based from this painting of Napoleon...
...although Cynath does not share the same level of tactical acumen. Throughout the years he has led his house noble Cold One’s on raids all across the Warhammer world and is more than a little reckless when it comes to accepting a challenge (he has a fairly decent record as well, slaying Grimgor and Valten on foot in single combat, no doubt impostors). However, I have lost a butt load of games with my dark elves (I started playing them when they were rubbish). Since the Black Prince’s favourite tactic is charging as fast as he can toward the enemy and letting his household catch up with him, it seemed only natural that his impudent nature would see him disgraced somewhere down the line.
So where do the fell scions of Chaos come into this? I got back into the hobby through creating a selling truescale WOC (warriors of chaos) chosen on foot over a year ago. I liked the outcome so much, I decided to develop my skills my sculpting Korpus Festerheart, which developed into a thread all on his own. The thread has been left stagnant for a while and i’ve decided to scrap it and relocate the work here with better photographs. I’ll post up the content I wrote for that blog again, so please bear with me if I seem like I’m repeating myself.
I hope you enjoy my work, and if you enjoy the blog please leave a comment.
Thank you scrazza. My first poster, and I think, my first subscriber.
First up, my Blood Angels:

@ Scrazza; I'm not well known here, so i expected a slow start. But just know that you are the first and my favourite.
@ Perkustin + Ink: Thank you both. I have a feeling I will have plenty of comments urging me to paint up what I have. I will post up some WIP shots of my Blood Angel force next.
I've been trying to sell my Terminator army for two years. So glad that I had no offers on them after reading the new DArk Angel FAQ. The metal terminators appear smaller than the newer metal ones, and they come in a limited range of poses, so bringing them up to scratch will be a priority. I've immersed myself in Dark Angel reference pictures, stories and Gothic architecture which I will translate into the miniatures themselves.
Unlike my other projects, speed is key here. I have set myself a schedule of a week to get everything prepared (well, the terminators at any rate - i'm not optimistic about having my landraider stripped and prepared by the weekend). I'm only converting a few characters, leaving Belial to create at my leisure, and painting whatever I have prepared over the weekend.
Here is what the army looks like today:
I've still yet to name the squads or the sergeants. What kind of names do Deathing members have? Also, what other books, or reference would you recommend I read? So far, all I know about Deathwing is that they paint their armour white to symbolise the passing from one world to the next (becoming ghosts), and that they are named Deathwing because one unit saved a recruiting world from Genestealers. Why do they have a broken blade as their symbol?
Time is getting away from me very quickly now. I have started to put the squads together and sort out what weapons go where. Making a decent Deathwing list is a real art. Despite having limited choices, there are a plethora of combinations to be considered.
I've mainly been concentrating on the bases. Because the old terminators were designed for a single 25mm (I think that is correct?) base, they don't dominate the larger bases like the newer plastic ones do. I can use this to my advantage by putting a lot of Blanche-esque craziness on the bases, and building a sense of place. Dark Angels enjoy a rich heritage of fantastic artwork, something which I intend to exploit through the Sergeants.
Think, walking psychopathic Cathedrals; thats the direction i'm heading in.
I had the day off today, so in between my commission work I'm putting in a double shift.
I've built up the bases, added all the cool fallen masonry and started the green stuff work.
The bits I ordered on the weekend still have not arrived and i'm getting a little skittish as to whether they will arrive by the weekend. I'm waiting for the main colour that I will use on the army and an assault cannon. Worry, worry, worry.
After a little rummaging, I found that I have just enough parts to make a dreadnought. Viva La Bits box.
Looking good Lil Looser , already like the style of our blog , interseting inspiartional pics as well as creative work! Look forward to seeing more of you stuff, I especiall like your Bonepart Pic ! big fan of the littlle man at the moment ;-)
Wow, what a long day. The Deathwing are nearly complete. The odd bit of Green stuff here, a smattering of glue here and they should be ready by Saturday for priming.
Here are the last blurry photo's you'll see of the un-primed army, that only look slightly different from the ones posted above. I will take some cleaner photo's tomorrow (yay more bare metal, bet you can't wait for that), then start my painting marathon Saturday morning. If you like the look of any of these models and you would like to see close up's now is the time to ask.
@Neil101 - thank you. I have a boat load of images to share, but I don't want to blow my load in one sitting. The Deathwing are what i'm working with at the moment, so I thought I would share with you in real time.
Urghhh, all sculpted, all ready to be primed tomorrow. I've been telling myself all week that i'd experiment with a grey primer on this army, but i'm starting to bottle it a bit now. I'm leaning toward dusting, as I am fairly familiar and comfortable with that technique.
Any comments or advise would be nice, but as it stands now, i'm setting my alarm clock for 8 a.m, and starting to dust after i've had my coffee.
Here are cleaner pics of the the models I have been working on. I hope you enjoy them:

And finally a nice little tip for those who want more imposing Dreadnoughts. Use an appropriate washer at the hip and shoulder joints to beef up your beast.
Shoulder joins Hip Join
Here's a question, should I paint the Storm Bolter casing red or green?
Also, does anyone know a good technique of painting a strong red over a white background? I've also found red a little washed out over white.
Nice uppdate , you could try giving the red a dark wash , i paint everything over black these days;-) , i have to say i havent seen this many metalheads since i gigged at Rock city Notingham!
Looking great Lil. I'd go for a green casing. Can't help you with the red over white, as I never done that before, but green casing will look a bit cooler then red ones IMHO. But it's still up to you though.
No problem Scrazza me old mucka (means friend, i'm not insulting you man!).
Thank you to anyone who has popped in to check out the thread. Had an early start this morning, (not quite as early as I planned: I watched raging bull for the first time last night until one) and most of the priming is complete. Disaster struck when I run out of black primer. I'm scrambling down to halfords for more. I'll be staying up a bit longer tonite by the looks of it. Anyone for a late one? I'll bring the pizza, you bring the uppers.
Merchite red, or suggestions along those lines are the most popular. I will try blood red mixed with a little brown and highlight from there.
An hour later...
Just got in from Halfords and finished the priming. I'm painting one terminator fully as a test first - should I post up pictures real time, or would that just be too annoying? I'll post up a tutorial tonight or tomorrow depending on how much time I have.
I'm going to be posting regularly throughout the weekend, hogging this section like an a** hole. Apologies to all other posters.
The mission: Paint a Deathwing force over the course of a single weekend.
Outcome:
FAIL
Urghh, I really thought I could bash an army out in a weekend. I love converting, and I love painting each model to a high standard. While it is possible to do both (check out Harry's blog in the fantasy section, the guy is a machine of high quality output). The habits I have fallen into do not contribute to speed painting, habits such as worrying over tonal range, experimenting with new techniques, not having any primer...
In my 48 hours, I managed to lie down two coats of Dhenb Stone (for good coverage), and three or four very thing layers of VMC Ivory for a solid cover... not very productive huh?
With this in mind, I'd like to offer some advise to anyone else who would like to attempt something similar, and throw down the gauntlet to anyone who thinks they could have done better!
1) Make, base and prime your models before the 48 hours begin.
I think that it was a major mistake to prime the models within the weekend's time limit. I had 23 models to paint. I estimated that I would spend at least an hour on each model, equalling 23 hours of work (i'm a math savant). Priming the models (once I nipped down to Halford's to buy bloody primer) took me much longer than I thought it would, eating too much of my painting time. This leads me nicely too...
2) Make a plan
Draw up a timetable of the weekend and divide it into hourly slots. Plan your painting time, and try and estimate when you will complete each stage of the painting process. Don't worry if you go over your planned time limit for a stage, because you may gain the time back somewhere else.
And make sure to PLAN BREAKS. Plan time for food and getting a little exercise. The quality of your work will suffer unless you take a little time off.
3) Entertainment
Whenever I paint, I enjoy music playing, listening to an audio book or having a crappy movie, or t.v series on in the background. Having some noise on in the background can keep you company, and stop you feeling so isolated on your painting marathon.
I'd highly recommend downloading or buying a load of films/albums/books that you have not heard before, and mix them with your favourite films/albums/books during the weekend. I watched Pandora for the first time, and really got me in the mood to play space hulk with my terminators.
4) Know the painting process before you begin.
I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my Deathwing. I had researched the painting process and found a painting process I really liked. The only thing I had not decided was the bolter casings, but I knew how to paint red, and green, so no big problem there.
Paint a practice model if you like, and time yourself doing it. See how long it takes to make your plan estimates much more accurate.
Being unsure of the process, and experimenting halfway through your painting session will eat up your time.
5) Have Fun!
Remember you are doing this for fun. Yes this is a challenge, and you should push yourself to complete what you set out to do. However, if the dog is acting up, or your kids want to play, or if an alien crashes through your window, remember to keep your painting challenge in perspective.
Try and get a few friends around to attempt the challenge with you. It's a lot easier to keep motivated when you have a group of friends calling you a wuss if you don't finish up the highlighting on your Commander's face.
Loser's Challenge:
Do you think your better than me? Well, you have a lot of nerve mister. Prove that you have the mettle to complete a game legal army of a 1,500 pts or more within the space of a weekend 48 hours and forever gain the respect of your peers.
I'd love to hear if anyone is attempting this challenge, and would love to see photo's (or better yet a project log) with your army.
Start you project log or post with: 'Loser's Challenge' and let's be seeing what you got.
Enough from me now. I'll post up closer shots of my Deathwing, and show off what I've been working on this week.
For Scrazza, who really wanted to see my Praetorian Sculpts:
THE PRAETORIAN 233RD. 'MARLBOROUGH'S LANCES'
Lieutenant Palmer
Musician - This is the first face I have sculpted for a model. I'm very pleased with the results (even if his cheeks make his head look too large for his body).
Some really nice conversion work there.
Not a suprise you couldn't paint the whole army in a weekend, for a start you would have to really put all your time into it, and secondly you would probably have to be happy with an average job. Might as well take your time and make it look nice. But modeling wise you have it all perfect
Also, on your model with two sets of wings, what model are the second, metal pair of wings from?
Thank you rodgers. The army is still unfinished and i;ve decided to finish them off all in one go over the course of another weekend (haven't learnt my lesson).
While I am excited to see all those Deathwing marines painted soon I am still extremely impatient to see more work on your scouring era Blood Angels. Your work with them was so inspiring that I bought a bunch of Blood Angels models but I lost interest when you stopped posting updates on your Angels. I understand that commissions must take a priority so you can make some money but to see your work delayed on these brilliant marines is almost unbearable. Please try to squeeze in an Angel a week or something just to keep the army going.
Cheers for that Ephrael. I'm not sure when I'll be able to return to the Host. Although I have started painting The dreadnought and basecoated Lucifer.
In the mean time, more Praetorians:
Musician WIP
I plan to have the dog this boy's base. Speaking of the Platoon's mascot:
Dog, a little less WIP:
WIP ???
I'm not quite sure what I'll do with the above. I'm either going to put him on a horse and have him as a messenger (improved COMs), or convert a mini objective marker.
Random Gaurdsman, probably called Jones.
In the average guard army, you are looking at least 50+ infantry models. Since the Praetorian range has a limited number of poses, repetition is inevitable. To spruce the squads up a little, I'll be adding tiny conversions like Jones.
Very WIP Gunnery Sgt. Thwaite (remove the 'W', 'i' and 'e' from his name to reveal what his nick name is among the men.)
I was lucky enough to have very kind parents who indulged their child's every wish, and bought me a ton of Praetorian models when they were being sold for £10 per squad. I have a huge collection of imperial guard that I painted about ten years ago now (wow I feel old) - but after seeing Col. Garvis' blog, well, I just had to have a go at converting some characters to lead my Praetorians. I learnt how to sculpt pith helmets, and got really inspired by the good Col.'s models which led to these:
I have no clue what co. produces these wheels. I found them on eBay and bought them.
Yeah, it is a shame but I know they are going to good homes.
----------------------------------
I bought this model as an indulgence, and when I was accidently sent two (thank you GW!) I decided to paint one up for auction. This is an absolutely beautiful model, finely balanced, and full of menace. An utter joy to paint, and I look forward to painting my personal Lelith up soon.
For W.I.P shots of my Archon and Haemonculous, check out my re-vamped web-site in my sig.
Part of the reason for setting up the blog was to have a break from power armour. The Praetorians are a beautiful army, and can be referenced to a very specific time in history - something that greatly appeals to me.
I plan on creating all sorts of things for the army, baggage trains, mobile artillery, messenger pigeons, and this:
The hospital horse:
I created this to keep the limited edition Praetorian causalities together. I don;t want to loose these guys, so I magnetized the cart and the models. I'm not sure what this would translate to in game terms, maybe an objective marker?
I've also Finished up Thwaite. Hope everyone enjoys:
And, since I have labelled this a painting and sculpting blog, I thought it high time that I present a painted miniature.
Praetorian's version of improved comms - a man on a Horse!
I built the rider with Thwaite in mind, creating a little mini diorama:
That's awesome stuff, I'm happy that I entrusted you with the model commision. With your awesome GS Sculpting and Warmill's awesome bases, I just hope my painting can do the model justice.
Thank you Varon and Chronotrigger (Just checked out your images - sumptuous work there), it's always great to get feedback, especially if it's nice.
I've been squirreling away updating this with past work found on other websites, but i've finllay reached the point where I can update my Dakka Account with smack-bang up to date work.
Here is the test scheme for my Dark Eldar Kabal:
I can feel eyes rolling in heads at the mention of another Dark Eldar thread. Just grin and bear it and send me nice comments. I only want positive feedback (tongue in cheek).
As well as the above warrior, I've also started painting my Archon
Snippet shot:
There are more pictures of this guy (without the freaky Photoshop experimentation) on my website (in sig.), as well as a few thoughts on TMM Dark Eldar.
Oh, and there's this freaky son of a bitch:
I plan on collating a more thorough tutorial with step by step pictures of how I created TMM dark eldar which I hope some will find useful.
Varakaai won the mask Rumour and Thief by murdering the Twin Headed Harlequin's Avant-Demi.
The Incubi shrine of the Ghoul-Kin Murder was believed destroyed in the massacre of Shaadoom. It has become common practice for Incubi Shrines associated with the Kabal of the Poisoned tongue to hunt surviving members of the Ghoul-kin as a rite of passage to enter a real space raid.
These pic archives indicate that a few survivors remain, under the new Shrine name of Wraiths-Mor: a name that is both a disgrace, and a curse. They are a scattered tribe, united by the terrible pact they made during the last days of the sundering of Shadoom. For the Incubi of the Wraiths-Mor are dead, animated by the hellish alchemy of the Haemonculi Maristille Gene-Weaver. In death, they continue a war long lost against the Shrines that caused their genocide.
The Wraiths-Mor can be identified by their prevalence; or rather Maristille's taste, for flayed skin tabards and fetishes. The Gene-Weaver's sense of humour can be seen here on this Incubi's tabard incorporating a still living human being.
END.
As ever, more photo's and tid bits on the website (in sig.)
Hey neil, thanks for the kind words. I haven't been getting much a response for the D.Eldar, so I'm wondering where I have gone wrong with them?
Only a tiny update today:
This is something I've been promising myself to try for a while. I bought a second addition Warhammer 40K boxed set that included a 'How to paint space marines' booklet inside. A facinating read; it describes unit markings (did you know marines had lieutenant's?), chapter organisation, power armour, and an interesting note about how the index astrates has been translated by the different chapters through time. I was determined to have a go, and see how the old methods and paints translate in 2010.
The full tutorial of how I painted this marine with full colour pitures can be found on my website in sig.
Praise to the 2nd edition SM! And your Deldar look awesome. I'm not sure what the reasoning is for the lack of comments. The test scheme is great and I really like the modelling you did on Klaivex Varakaai.
the deldar are really well painted , but it maybe because there are a few blogs about , but dakka can be quiet sometimes . the womble is also very nice mate. will have to check-out your tutorial too.
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm glad you threw in all those pictures, it really helps. I think the lack of posts comes from everyone up in arms over GW raising their prices while lowering their production costs and their tyrannical oppression of the Souther Hemisphere 3rd party retailers (ie. Maelstrom). Here in a few days, it will all become calm again and the usual dakka murmurs will come into balance.
Thank you both. I just hope that the tutorial will be of some use, I don't mind if people don't comment on it or not.
I have just completed a commission piece for Isabella Von Carstien, and here she is:
For more photographs, please visit my website in sig. I have been working furiously on completing a couple of commission pieces, one of which is a big meaty unit of dark elf spearmen. Between these and the new dark eldar army I have started (check out the first link in my sig; notes on the vile bestiary) have really got me in the mood to convert more Dark Elves.
I have a problem taking photo's of squads because of the way I have my light box set up. I have 20 Kabalite warriors painted up, so here's an image dump of some of my favourites:
Sybarite Thraxis
I assembled one of the squads with a lot of hellion parts. I love how feral the heads are, and I imagined my Archon offering the most vicious members of lower Commoragh a chance to serve in his weakened Kabal. Injecting new and vicious blood can never be a bad thing, can it?
Sigil of the Cult of the Flayed Prophet
Within Commoragh society I imagine there exists a whole plethora of cults, secret organisations, and abodes of sin. The warriors are already marked with all sorts of strange sigils, indicating their allegiances or past vices, so I thought I'd carry along this theme and sculpt flayed faces onto some of my warriors. Members of the pleasure cult of the flayed prophet must bear the mouth and eyes of a being considered holy to one of the prey species. This particular model has kept the face, adorning it on his right shoulder guard.
Human skin is in vogue with the Kabal of the Medusae now; especially when the human settlement is close to a Craftworld.
The Dark Eldar do this because they know that the seers will try and form a logic to their attacks and divine a pattern when, in truth, none exists save for the pleasure of torture.
Thanks Neil! I'm looking forward to looking at the prgress you have been making on your own blog!
I've been lucky enough to receive the Talos I pre-ordered today. I've been having a mess around with the kit trying to make it look more like the artwork in the codex. Although I love the model, I personally found it to be a little too upright:
Give this build some thought if you plan on buying the talos kit or three. If nothing else, it will help you create an individual Talos pain engine, breaking up the pattern if you intend to use more than one.
Here is the first part of my alternate Talos build:
Assemble Talos as instructed until stage 4.
Do not attach hip as shown. Instead, pivot the hip 180 degree's and glue torso to where the 'tail' should go:
NOTE: Above model is blu tacked only. This gave me the chance to see how the model would look with a slanted tail. There is quite a gap between the tail/stinger and the torso, adequately filled in by this little jem of a piece: The Telson (pg 37 of this months white dwarf, piece no.49)
Already I think I'm off to a good start. I'll have another play with the kit tomorrow and see what I can do with the arms.
Looks interesting Ll , I was thinking i wish i had that kit when i created Actaeon. This is the first time i have seen it properly.
I havent seen the art work , but i think i have it on my comp somewhere ;-/ will have to have a rummage now you mention it.
P.S Hlaine Larkin, I will pm you back soon about that job!
Now, the bane of my existence, TMM Raiders!
Stage one; no problem!
Stage two, my troubles begin.
I always knew these guys were going to give me a headache. Anyone who has painted large, flat surfaces with metallics know that it is hard to achieve a smooth, consistent outcome. The metallic pigment in the paint dries very quickly, and can leave area's patchy (see below)
Not good, especially on a £20 piece of kit. I have recently had a big clean of my desk, and this ugly thing was the only thing on there as I tried to go to sleep last night. What does that have to do with anything? Well, I came across a great tutorial/rambling debating the best techniques of getting a consistent metallic colour when airbrushing a Dredknight kit. The speaker suggested adding Velljo Glaze medium to slow down the drying process of the metallic pigment, allowing for a smoother blend.
And it's a fantastic tip! I wish I knew about this at the outset of this project. The glaze medium allows for much smoother transitions (even though I think this kind of paintwork is better handled by an airbrush):
I hope that you will be able to see that the second set of photographs are smoother than the first. With subsequent washes and candy coats, I hope eradicate any unseemly scratches from the base coat.
Any questions don't hesitate to ask. I don't swing by here as often as I like so it may take me a few days to reply.
Here's what i've been working on in between commissions:
I've decided that I want my Talos to look quite subservient, with lots of hanging chains and trohpies. I imagine that my Haemonculous would use this Talos as a mix of personal assistant (for heavy lifting and gashing) and trophy cabinet.
More pictures on the blog.
I just realised that I haven't taken a photo of a little detail I have put on the raider. Here is a little snack for the crew:
Here is the second completed (note: I say completed, but viewing the photo's I have noticed a few untiiy bits and pieces, and the metal could could use another wash or three: and the base still needs snow) Spear elf from my converted unit. At this rate, I will have the entire unit painted within thirty years! Good job elves live such long lives eh?
Cold one knights have been a favorite of mine since I started collecting wargaming figurines. Whenever I field my Dark Elves, I always make sure my lord is accompanied by his own retinue of knights. I just had to include these in my revamped army. Here is the first mock up of the cold one knight.
I'm still undecided whether or not to use the bigger metal shield on all my knights, or whether to modify the plastic shields that come with the kit.
I quite like how the smaller plastic shield shows off more of the model, but the older metal shield has a lot of nostalgic value locked up in it. If I cannot successfully re-create Rakarth's shield (I imagine they would be too expensive to buy) I'll be forced to use my second option.
For more pictures and background please visit my blog (in sig.) where you'll also find a tutorial on how to create a light bow for under a quid!
Thank you both. It's always great to pick up another reader, and it's always a pleasure to have my first poster here too.
Large shield it is then. The opinion is pretty unanimous on that one, I just have to figure out how to recreate it eight times now.
Here's what's on my workbench:
Here's the state of the project.
I have added classic chapter markings (Rogue Trader decals) to the models and added battle damage to the armour.
I've decided to paint the sheath's of the guns grey instead of the traditional green or red. When Xyon first suggested this I dismissed the idea too quickly. I thought that the models would look quite dull and monotone. However, painting the sheath's in green or red really draws the eye away from the main model. By keeping the sheaths neutral I can develop colour sigils on the model itself.
Ultimately, I was finally swayed by this;
I have a few more photographs on my website (in sig.) and a retro Deathwing game video clip.
Wow lots of great stuff LL , those termies are insanely good!
stuningly effective at this stage , death wing are my all time favourite termies .
The capture slave is a nice touch on the raider too , so charterfull. And finally your dark elves are to your normal very high standard matey, , its good to see those cold ones . They are really rekindling an old flame of exodite eldar.
Automatically Appended Next Post: oh and nice you tube find too , made me lol. i used to have that game on the amiga.
O.O wow...thats all i really can say they are stunning. wish i had a tenth of your talent when it comes to this stuff. oh checked out your personal site too sick sh*t on there also. lookin forward to more loserery goodness in the future. *adds to favorites*
I comented on this in your other thread , but when i saw it again , i had to do it once more , STUNNING ! Is that the head from the Russian Velard version ?
Thank you to all the incredible support for this project. I'm extremely fortuante to work for a patient dedicated client who has let me do pretty much whatever I want with him. I hope he will be happy when it is complete.
In the meanwhile, quick update on the collection of Phoenix Lords I have recently painted for a friend:
Awesome primarch model! It is simply amazing. The only thing I have a problem with is that the leg pose looks feminine. Regardless it is one of a kind. Props to you, man!
The sculpt on that primarch is amazing. Very nice how you have the gem where the heart is. But if it is any help (and I could be wrong here!), I did find the leg pose a little bit funny. It seems as if the legs are bunching together like he needs to pee, or daintily stepping like a girl. The way that the leg armor is shaped accents it. If I were you I would just google image search for pictures of Michael the Archangel, casting out daemons, and take that as inspiration. It's a quick and easy way to see how angels are depicted in religious iconography, even if it only inspires your paintjob more!
Thanks for the comments and the crit. guys. The Sanguinius model I have sculpted does receive quite a lot of criticism for the shape of his hips. I am taking steps to bulk out his waist and break up the outline.
I'm so close to finishing the Deathwing. Here are a couple of eye bleedingly close photographs of the squad sergeants. I'm sorry about the photographs, I've tried re-sizing them but photobucket doesn't want to play nice with me (EDIT: Seems I've managed to re-size one. Perhaps the photo's need time to readjust.)
Sergeant Appollyon
Sergeant Imahiel
Sergeant Belphegor
Sergeant Zhagen
Dreadnought Cain
I've taken these photographs for the unusual purpose of adding them as contact photographs in my address book. I have been looking for an army list app with a nice bright interface for my armies, and I've hit on the idea of using the iPhone contacts to create a profile for every unit in my army:
It took a bit of time writing out all the stats and rules, but now I have an easy reference to all the units equipment, special rules and weaponry. I've even included a "Roll of Honour' to note down any notable kills, campaigns or actions.
As you can see, poor Cain has nothing under his Honour Roll yet, but Belial has already bagged a pheonix lord, Avatar and a Wraithlord (he's a beat with a Thunder hammer).
Almost forgot to upload this. I took the photo on my phone so the quality isn't brilliant.
The image is inspired by the Artwork of William Blake, and the Emperor Tarot Card. I believe the exact image I copied from was from the poem Jerusalem.
The Emanation of the Giant Albion
The Emperor Tarot
If you haven't seen any of William Blake's work, please open another web browser and look right now. They are nightmarish and beautiful and haunting and I'm sure will inspire someone reading this. There are many hunched, tormented figures in Jerusalm, crouching down, often naked, covering their countenance from the viewer. I wanted to translate the sense of shame to the figure of the Emperor of the Tarot as an allegorical representation of the Unforgiven's penance. I have also given the emperor a broken sword; something for all those Jungian & Freudian students out there.
Then I set the entire thing on fire! I'll upload a photo of the result later tonight.
Thank you for all the nice messages. I'll edit this post to repond to each in turn, but i'm rushing out the door to play football, but I wanted to offer a nice update.
If you like these images and you would like more photo's of the miniatures please visit my blog (horrible plug I know, but the images are huge!).
I wanted to write an update of what i've been working on today. I've had some interest in the banner I created for Apollyon and, since I enjoyed creating it so much, I decided to create another for my Librarian.
The first thing I do is gather images. This is one of my favourite activities when working on a project. I'm gathering images, quotes and music that inspire me all the time; and when I stumbled upon this old artwork by John Blanche, I knew I'd use it at sometime in the future:
At this point I had no real theme in mind. I liked the image, and it felt right to use with this model.
The initial sketch is very rough. I'm working on shapes, proportion and working in any detail that catches the eye. I'm not really concerned with the final outcome, i'm just trying to cram interesting information into my brain to use in the next sketch.
I had a lion's head, but not much else. I knew from my previous attempt at creating a banner, highly detailed images do not lend themselves well to such a small scale. I decided to have a broken blade protruding from the mouth of the lion, and winged background to frame the head.
Below, we can see a rough sketch (on the right) trying to fit all the images I wanted to use. This time I draw to scale, to make sure the Lion's head, broken Blade and Winged motif is not too complicated.
And I remember the most infamous inhabitant of Caliban; the Legendary Lion from which the Primarch took his personal fetish. The beasts of Caliban are described as spectral nightmares, neither flesh nor spirit (a bit like Koi, or cats; half in, half out). Fitting then, that a Librarian, who draws upon the power of the warp, should echo the image of the Calibalite Lion in his heraldry.
For this last step I concentrate on technique, form and composition. I measure out the gaps between the feathers, mark the central point of the banner and construct the lion head around the broken sword. I decided to elongate the mouth beyond what is biologically possible to reinforce the nightmarish qualities of the beast. The banner is now ready for painting!
I'll run this through the scanner and put a download on my website if anyone would be interested in this design for their own Dark Angels (or any other chapter; there is no specific mark on there).
Leave a comment below, or on the website. If I get enough interest I'll produce a page of designs to be used in your armies.
I'm quite happy with how it turned out. I think that the shadows of the wings can be deepened a little more and the Lions face could use a little more definition, but on the whole very pleased. I just have to decide what to do with the back of the banner now. Right now, I think that I will paint more written scrawl.
I also completed a little freehand on the Librarian's book:
The images have again been inspired by William Blake and is taken from the First Book of Urizen, plate 14 (click the link to read the 14th plate and see other disturbing images). I tried to re-create this image on the book:
and decided to have a scrawl with flaming skulls on the first page. I'm very close to completing the Librarian, but I'm debating whether to a some magic-y something emanating from his right hand. It looks kind of empty at the moment and I may create something for it.
Dang, LL, that libby is looking awesome. Great job on the freehand in his book and on that DW banner. I'm at a loss for what you could put in his hand, outside of just adding OSL to it.
I have a perverted desire to model a can of fosters in his hand, but that would be utterly stupid. He couldn't drink it with his ventilator...
Osl has been suggested a few times to me but I'm a bit worried that the lingual will look a bit at odds with the rest of the army. However, it is a special character model that can get away with such an extravegant flourish.
LilLoser wrote:I have a perverted desire to model a can of fosters in his hand, but that would be utterly stupid. He couldn't drink it with his ventilator...
Hmmm... Have you considered a straw? ANd maybe a little connection socket on his mouth grille.
Oh, and on the banners. Another technique to consider is to paint them on double or tripple size, then scan them, resize, and print. That way you will have incredibly crisp detail, and none of the paint buildup. The bigger size will allow you to add more elaborate detailing and such. I used that technique well over a decade ago for a dreadnought's banner, looked good. ^^
Wow, cant believe i have not come across your thread before. Some really inspired conversions with both the Deathwing and Praetorians! I am really digging zhagaen ( did i spell that right lol ) I dig the white aswell, cool stuff. Consider me a new lurker
Oh man, I forgot to add the completed deathwing shots! Thank you all for the kind comments.
Squad Imahiel 'Victuus Priscus'
The second of my Deathwing squads; Imahiel 'Victus Priscus' which literally translates as the 'living ancient'; but can be read as the living dreadnought. The nickname is a playful nod to the age of the miniature, and the venerable status of Imahiel. The watcher that walks beside him is a figure of ambigous portent. On the one hand, having a watcher follow Imahiel marks him for greatness within the chapter, but it may be a harbinger of the sergeant's demise, and final ascension to the chassis of a dreadnought.
For more huge photographs please feel free to visit my blogsite
Awesome, i love that old skool termi captain! i remember getting it in 2nd edition days. I actually still have the power fist somewhere for some reason lol love your deathwing
Squad Belphegor accompanies Belial to war, forming his personal cohort and spearhead of attack. Belphegor is the most senior sergeant of the army and is second only to revered Cain in council to the Lord of the Deathwing. When squad Belphegor takes to the field, the air scorches with lightening, and thrums to the irresistible crack of hammers destroying all before them.
wtf how did I miss this thread ?!? Wow LilLoser great job on the DW. Man you made me regret selling my DA to that kid in the 90's .
Love the banner also with that lion on it. Keep up the good work. SUBBED!
It's felt like an age since I've updated this log. I've been kept busy with the blog, commission work and plain old work (all the usual bland excuses). However, I have a few bits and pieces that i'm working on; Sanguinius is now in the painting stage having completed the sculpt, and I've started work on Lucifer.
I need a little help deciding which background to photograph the W.I.P stages of painting. The first is a neutral background, and the second is a warmer version that would compliment the golden armour.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm leaning more toward the neutral background, but wonder if a warmer one would be better toward the end of the project?
It's worth a lot Moltar. I'm getting roughly fifty fifty reaction to the photos. It's a difficult one to gauge as the model itself has only been primed. I may end up having to photograph them with both backgrounds and post them up.
Here are a few progress shots of my Spear Elf unit. I've completed the black armour, and i've started work on the spears themselves. Most of the army is now assembled and awaiting a base coat.
Famed for the Black lacquered armour of the Ch'Ihll dynasty, Cynath Ch'Ihll, the Bastard prince, maintains a regiment of warriors in his household at all times. Acting as the Prince's debt collectors, thugs and disposable pleasures, it is never-the-less a great honour to serve as a retainer in one of the noble houses private armies.
These warriors are drawn from the citizens of Naggarond, Capitol of Naggaroth and therefore of cold complexion. Unlike standard militia raised in times of the Witch King's wars, the warriros of Ch'Ihll are professional soldiery, bound to the Ch'Ihll house. A peculiar trait shared amongst those of the Black house-hold is their distinctive eye colour. It is a little known fact that and Elf's eye colour can change throughout their life, either through extreme stress, trauma, or inner turmoil. The common Nagarothii aphorism is the best liars have black eyes. The ritualistic bonding to the Ch'Ihll house taints the Elf's eyes a violent carmine that deepens to a royal purple the longer they serve.
The sigil adorning the Warriors shields is a mocking reference to the slur cast upon the current ruling Matriarch of the house; The Gorgon Queen, Mother of Monsters. Cynath has taken the Gorgon as his personal heraldry for this campaign, a cruel joke to remind his enemies of his dubious allegiance to the Queen and his knowledge of their private vulgarities.
The Household Guard is captained by Khatalha Khela'Mandour. He is responsible for the training of Cyanth's warriors, the maintenance of armour and meating out discipline where it is needed. Khatalha served a commission as a corsair aboard the Kraken's Tempest - the Black Ark that first ferried Cynath across the Old World during his Hakseer. Khathla rose to promnince in Cynath's court when his detachment of Corsairs had run down a chariot manned by Characian lions. In lieu of plunder, Khatalha took the lion's pelt as a symbol of power; a satisfactory return for the loss of an eye.
Cheers guys. I know it's not much fun looking at W.I.P's but I have another couple of projects I'm working on that i'm quite proud of.
I've been thinking about the background of this force and where a sorceress would fit in. Cynath (my lord) is currently roaming the Chaos wastes North of the Wall having dooped a garrison manning the Naggarond watch towers. Any Coven sorceresses initially deceived would be liable to turn around raise an alarm - not very good news for Cynath, so he's had them assassinated. Without a medium, guide or seer, traveling the ephemeral wastes would be quite difficult; nigh on suicidal. That's where this beauty comes in, the sorceress simply known as the child of the wastes.
The Child of the Wastes
I already have a big cat for her familiar (she's a crazy cat lady who has grown up in the Chaos wastes), and I intend to model a big fur collar for her cloak. I'm not really sure how to model her cloak at this time. I like the sleek look i've managed to sculpt for her legs. It would be a shame to cover them up with a cloak. I'm also rather stuck as to what to do for her right arm. I don't want her holding a totem, seer staff or big skull thing. Any suggestions would be ace.
I've also mocked this baby up;
The Harridan 'Red Ruin'
I had Lelith's body lying around in my bitz box for ages and I decided to mock this gal up to paint. Not sure if she'll be included in Cynath's force, but she looks really fun to paint. Not sure why I chose the name either, other than it just seemed to fit the character of the miniature.
Until next time.
LilLoser,
P.S. I've been writing up articles on paint brand comparisons for my website. I'm publishing the second installment tomorrow that deals with Vallejo paint (first one is already up dealing with Citadel paints). I' really appreciate any feedback you may have to share on how the article was written, constructed or presented; or whether you agree or disagree with anything i've written. Cheers warseer.
The warriors seem like they are a hit. No negative criticism has come my way so far and everyone is being so nice about them. I'm very proud at how they have turned out and now I can look around at the army composition as a whole, and how it would work outside of a gaming enviroment.
By this I mean how would the army function in real life. What kind of things would it need to survive in the Wastes? Who else would be included in the force that wouldn't necessarily appear in the main army book; either because of their local nature, or the make up of Cynath's traveling war-band. I also want to buy and paint units that I think are cool. The warriors are quite neat and tidy - lots of straight lines and sheer surfaces. Time for a bit of rough me thinks...
These are the first pics of my WIP dark rider and shade equivalents. I don't know all the details behind them yet, but I know the guy with the sword and chain is called Varro.
These guys are rangers of the Ch'Ihll estate. They maintain the grounds, hunt the meat for the Highborns plate, and try to keep the monsters of the estate from doing too much damage. The groundsmen are very poor and so cannot afford the Black Steeds the corsairs plunder from Ulthan. However, they do have their ways of getting around fast which stems from their love of dog fighting. One's social status is determined by how well their dog fights in the pits. The bigger and more ferocious breeds of dogs are obviously the best, so they cross breed their pets with whatever wild creatures the rangers can find. The bigger animals can be mounted and the ranger can ride them into battle, which is a nice excuse to buy these:
I've used the Hellion kit to make vicious feral riders that have no saddle of stirrups. They hold onto tufts of fur and kick the wolf / big dog to go where they want them to go. The fur I've sculpted on their back is from a weasel (a nod to the sable brushes I use). I plan on painting these with a darker, more sanguine tone of flesh, festooned with tattoo's!
These are the rough sketches I have for them now. Any input or crteativy is highly welcomed!
Studying one of the thousand aspects of Khaine the child only now remembered as The Crow has become an outcast in the fraternity of assassins. While meditating on the Khaineth Zarrid (a death blow that shatters the spinal column) a crow entered her enumerations and posed the assassin a riddle.
The child assassin unable offer a response, barred her throat for restitution. When she awoke from her trance the child assassin found a pair of knives resting in her lap, but had lost her voice to the fled crow.
Ever divorced from her elvish anima, the assassin has taken on bestial aspects and become an outcast among her own kind. Her silence has been replaced with a hideous squawk. Her feet have become elongated ending in talons. Her back has become bent, a low sloping gait replacing her race's usual elegance. With her knives she found that she could leap further, and higher than before. Her precise killing excellence had now become a frenzy of blows landed from above.
Rejected by her peers and mutilated by her masters for her deformity, The Crow now occupies the highest spires of Naggarond maddened by the riddle of the crow.
Those wolves are looking cool! No pun intended! They look quite lifelike. I also love the snow.
They are surely keeping up to the fantastic standard throughout this thread.
Awesome work man!
Cheers dude. Felt like I was talking to myself for a while there.
++++++++++++++++++++
Morathi Queen of the Druchii
++++++++++++++++++++
Out of all the Dark Elf characters Morathi is possibly my favourite. On the battlefield she is a force of nature, unpredictable, wild and exciting. While aspects of the current model are excellent, I felt there were a few things I could improve upon.
For more piccies of the Gorgon Emperess and more analysis have a look here
I totally forgot to comment before, but I love your stuff, I watch your thread on another forum. I really like the retro Deathwing especially the classic captain with the quartered knee emblem. Oh and the burning skulls on the back of the dread look great.
My favourite model though is the assassin, really great motion and good attention to detail, like the hood being swept back into her face. How did you make the cape? I fully intend to copy this conversion one day.
Oh and your fluff reminds me of the Malazan books, just like the High House of Chains blog which I also love.
The only thing I don't like is some of the older Dark Elf sculpts, I think the heads on the sorceresses look a bit large, especially compared to the more graceful looking conversions you have done. For the Child of the Wastes I think you might get a good effect by painting a bit more shadow inside the sides of her helm, serving to narrow her face a bit.
Cheers dude, thought i'd try something a little different (for a change).
The Helmet of Horror

The Helmet of Horror, a concept Pain Engine W.I.P by LilLoser
That thing looks cool although I can't entirely make out what it is from this pic. But I just went to your blog and saw the finished wolf riders and they are totally amazing, such a perfect match of bits, I guess it's because both the wolves and the DE are full of so much movement they go together so well, I can't imagine any other rider models working as well.
Following up on the review I thought i'd compile a bunch of tutorials on how to paint the miniatures from the Dark Vengeance set. I will be opening a chaotic log soon but couldn't wait to shared progress so far.
Here is the first part of the first tutorial that deals with How To Paint Deathwing Armour;
Here are a couple of pics of other DArk Angels stuff.
Really enjoyed painting these. I never pegged myself as a lover of Dark Angels, but there you go!
So fired up about the new Heresy releases by forgeworld and i'm a little disappointed I won't be able to paint up the kits in Dark Angels Green, or introduce any gothic imagery or conversion like my Deathwing. Still, I have a lovely tactical squad and bikers to paint up.
Cheers both, glad to see old faces returning! I was going to post this up in the finished section but thought I may get shouted at by a few vocal members;
A black armoured Helbrecht painted for a client who had other plans for a back pack. I wanted to have a nice contrast between the warm black of the armour and coolness of the cloak using red as the spot colour.
Thanks for the compliment though man! The Hellbrute was so much fun to paint and I can't wait to do variant schemes. I think a red one next would be fitting,.
I like it, LL! I think I would prefer a bit more contrast between the skin tone and the armor, but it still looks good. The base looks pretty sweet too, but the lava effect appears kind of muted. Is that due to the backdrop?
Cheers Moltar. I have another two to paint so i'll contrast the skin and armour more. I'm really inspired by the front cover of the new 40k Campign book, so I may give that style a bash.
I think the muted tone is a combination of backdrop and bad photography skills. I'm looking into how to light my miniatures better with the equipment I have. Maybe a plain white back drop would give a cleaner finish?
Anyhoo...Sanguinius?
The Primarch Sanguinius Lord of the Blood Angels
In celebration of Forgeworld's release of Angron, the Red Angel and the Horus Heresy supplements I thought it auspicious that my Primarch conversion is complete.
Further design notes and bigger pictures can be found here
Any comments or criticisms will be warmly received.
This piece is based loosely on the Skaven Warlord on the front cover of the 5th edition Army Book. The client is painting this himself and will hopefully send photo's to me of the completed miniature.
Backpack has been blu-taced on for a sample of what options are available with the servo harness.
Wow, LL! That skaven build is awesome! I really like the back pack/servo harness, but the staff and cyber arm are totally sick too! I hope your client does send photos, because I want to see it painted too.
The Sanguinius was not really my sort of thing, just a bit too shiny and all powerful for my tastes.
But this skaven is utterly amazing, really just one of my favourite conversions I have seen recently. Staggering amount of detail and loads of cool little fiddly bits. The Sherlock Holmes parts are great and I could see them working well for a Mechanicus type as well (must resist stealing that idea). The giant ring around his collar looks like a diving helmet of some sort could attach there and the bident looks great, although I think the cable should attach to the prongs, just another half a centimeter longer, or plug into some sort of power pack at the top. The little cogs work really well, if ever there was an appropriate place to add steampunk to games workshop, it's skaven.
Subjugator. Annihilator. The End of Empire. The Eye of the Emperor.
Horus Lupercal, Primarch of the XVI Legionaes Astartes.
I've been rather busy lately on this special commission. It's something i've wanted to do for some time and this year i've had the impetuous to finally create this Primarch.
I wanted a bit more contrast between the skin and armour from my last attempt at a Hellbrute. This scheme is a bit more traditional for a Black Legionnaire.
"You are like a son and together we have all but conquered the galaxy. Now the time has come for me to retire to Terra. My work as a soldier is done and now passes to you for I have great tasks to perform in my earthly sanctum. I name you Warmaster and from this day forth all of my armies and generals shall take orders from you as if the words cam from mine own mouth. But words of caution I have for you for your brother Primarchs are strong of will, of though and of action. Do not seek to change them, but use their particular strengths well. You have much work to do for there are still many words to liberate, many peoples to rescue. My trust is with you. Hail Horus! Hail the Warmaster!"
The Emperor of Mankind
The final photos of Horus, Warmaster of the Imperium. There is a full write up of the miniature here as well as a ton more pictures and inspiration file.
I've tried a little photoshop trickery on the first photographs, let me know what you think. He's up in the gallery if you wish to vote.
Happy 2013; during the winter break I decided to work a little on my own stuff and was drawn like a moth to a black flame to the Druchii. Here is the result of a few hours of dark insanity:
And if you want to see early WIP shots of the painting of the Prince please check out my facebook page which is full of quick snaps of upcoming projects.
I'm pondering how to paint the sword. The visual que for the model comes from Moorcock's Elric and I quite some of the early artwork for the book covers. Of course this would mean more black, something I'm loathe to do (I get criticised a lot for lack of contrast and it's something I think I'll hear a lot once I post the finished pictures of the prince). A plain silver sword would mean another cold colour against the blue of the Cold one's hide. Perhaps a magma - esque sword? I could then paint his ring red and have a warm purple along the barding of the steed to complete the triangle of colours.
New Year and a new toy to play with in the form of a camera. This is one of the first shots i've taken and it's mightily frustrating trying to learn what all the bells and whistles do ona this thing. Anyway here is a quick update on how the Imperial side of the divide is going. Ravenwing and a tactical squad:
I also have a W.I.P shot of some deathwing terminators. Enjoy!
More updates soon as well as W.I.P shots on facebook.
Thanks guys. I can't shake the thought of Throgg as an angsty teenager... I have an update for you.
Do you know those miniatures you just can't stop painting? Throgg is an amazing miniature to paint, I just got lost in it and after waking from my painting trance I had this.
Looking at the picture I can see bits and pieces I need to clean up. The skin tones are a little flat and I can work on the cape a little more. I'm still unsure whether yo give the model an ink wash to sharpen up a few of the details or leave it as is.
A question for everyone; I intend to have some UHU stringy drool on Throgg's many mouths - but what colour should it be? I'm leaning toward a nice vibrant toxic green, but blood may be more frightening. Any input here would be invaluable.
@winterdyne; I'll message you with the methodology.
@ manickze; ha cheers dude.
Good news, these models have been featured on the white dwarf daily edition on games workshop's website!
It's my first time on there and I can't tell you how excited I am. It's been an ambition to have models in white dwarf since I could hold a paint brush, and this is one step closer to getting into the actual magazine.
“All men make mistakes, but a good man yields when he knows his course is wrong, and repairs the evil. The only crime is pride.”
“A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,
And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,
And the dry stone no sound of water. Only
There is shadow under this red rock,
(Come in under the shadow of this red rock),
And I will show you something different from either
Your shadow at morning striding behind you
Or your shadow at evening rising to meet you;
I will show you fear in a handful of dust.”
Hello, this is the opening shot charting my progress of this wonderful diorama sculpted by Simon Egan and released by the good ol' boys of Frogeworld.
Still in the clean up stage and I'm mightly impressed by what the team have managed to achieve. The scene is dolorous an ending chime to the hope of the Great Crusade. I hope I can do it justice.
Cheers for the replies guys. I'll reply to them a little later on - just got enough time to upload these and fly out to pick my GF up from work.
She won't be happy if I'm late.
Will it be our ideals that linger after us, or the terrible violence's we visit upon each other?

Looking at the photographs I am really surprised by how monochromatic the skin and armour tones are. I intend to add a little warmth to the skin tones and start hightlighing and shading the armour to add more depth.
For more piccies check out the blog for extra photo's.
At charky; yup it's mostly airbrush work, then I use a paintbrush to add depth and definition. No pencil involved (although this is an awesome way of adding battle damage).
A note on osl; I felt that this would be a huge risk to take at the start of the project but without risk you don't improve and I like working to the principle of never compromising or letting fear get in the way of an idea. I'm using the under lighting as a visual reference to Horus and it also helps that he looks bat gak crazy with the red under light. This is foreshadowing e madness that will consume the character.
There's also another reason why I've used the red. I want loken and abaddon to be associated with warm and cold colours. Abaddon's features are skewed with rage, transformed by red. For loken I've used blue as an undertone to the skin, representing the cold doctrine of the imperial truth.
Once again I have to say this kit is phenomenal. This may very well be the best sculpted miniature I've ever painted. The detail on the face and the little articulations of the models charging at one another is breath taking.
I would suggest not placing your watermark/website on a gif till you're done, so that they don't jump around the picture and look badly stitched together. I really like your take on Abaddon, he.. reminds me of Horus! Why is his topknot red, though?
I went with the red top know because I think it looks better. It's been picked up on a couple of times and I'm wondering why it is a point of contention? Is there something in the back history about it being a certain colour?
Farsight
Riptide
All WIP at the mo, but I have written up a (very) brief un-boxing review of the Farsight miniature for the blog:
Abaddon possessed a particularly deep voice, was taller, stronger and bulkier than the average Space Marine, and wore his long black hair in a strikingly tall topknot when not using a helmet.
From Lexicanum. I mean, sure it doesn't source this or anything, but yeah.
Also, I was about to ask how the Finecast Farsight was, then I saw that there's an unboxing thing on your blog.. BRB!
