Incoming: Grey Knights — Article by Adam Troke As the Emperor prepared for his final confrontation with the traitor Horus, he granted one final gift to Mankind, a safeguard and protection against the horrors of the Warp - the Grey Knights. A brotherhood of warriors as elite as they are secretive, the Grey Knights are a shining line of silvered steel that stands between humanity and the Daemons of Chaos. Trained as the mightiest paragons of mental fortitude and martial discipline in the Imperium, the Grey Knights maintain a vigilant watch for daemonic incursion, responding wrathfully against the scions of the Dark Gods, and those who dally with them. Clad in baroque Terminator armour and wielding powerful weapons such as storm bolters and Nemesis force weapons, the Grey Knights tear through the enemy, unleashing an onslaught of psychic powers and sorcery to sunder the foe. The Grey Knights are an unstoppable force, the manifestation of the Emperor's will, valiant warriors who willingly sacrifice their own humanity so that Mankind itself can endure. This April Games Workshop releases Codex: Grey Knights, alongside a comprehensive range of fantastically detailed Citadel miniatures. Although details are being kept firmly under wraps for now, you can expect an exciting selection of plastic kits to enable you to build your own Grey Knights army. Over the coming weeks we'll be releasing more details both here on the Games Workshop website and also in the pages of White Dwarf - to ensure you're the first to get the news, make sure you subscribe to the Games Workshop newsletter and keep an eye on the What's New Today blog. Too little, too late. With the Anima Tactics team that I just ordered yesterday and the Raging Heroes Manticore that I'll be working on soon after, I won't have the time to get too excited about the new Grey Knights codex and models. I might end up buying the codex and one or two characters to augment what I already have, but other then that, GW have pretty much lost me on this one.
It's a shame too, if they were to reveal something even a week earlier, they would have had me all in for the new release too.

You know what would've been a really cool announcement - showing off some preview miniatures. But then GW would have to be a miniatures company before they could do that.
Wait...

What annoys me...(and i'm sure many many others) is these 'non-news' articles/emails......
their are already strong rumours, from fairly reliable guys on forums (which i'm sure GW know...) saying they will be out in March/April (think most recent ones i read said April...). So GW decided to send out on message, saying they will be coming out in 2 1/2 months time, with no preview...One pic of any new model would be nice, but no. So then we have to wait 1 1/2 months before we even see the models, then another month before we can buy......... Fail GW I'm sure many people could run that company better

They need to bring back those previews they had back in the day. Where they would just show you a picture of the new model(s) and a description to go with it, like this classic:

Not to hop on the bandwagon, but seriously GW? Not to compare, but look what PP just did for Wrath? Not that the Khador thing isn't just damned silly-looking, but at least we saw something! Would it have really diminished the release had they thrown a teaser model into this? Seriously.

Its not LANGUAGE, PEOPLE, just a lot of other companies lead off with at least a preview to entice us as players. Why GW doesn't befuddles myself and others. It isn't that I am not happy that we have a definite date, because now I can wait and see what April brings to the table before I commit to another 40K project. So, happy, just disappointed.

Looks like stickmonkey was wrong on this one:
My sources are saying GK may be much later this year. Sources say that because the DE release was so successful, that's why we are seeing a shuffling to get more DE models out sooner. More a financial decision than production from what I'm hearing. Hope it's not true.

Its good to get some confirmation on the release. As to those who think they would spill everything in one article, the opposite would happen if they had.... people would be whining as every week passes between now and April that they are not getting more information. Now GW can trickle out information until release keeping people spun up.

Demand all you want of a company, what you are going to get is an (effective) marketing strategy as this topic is already getting a viral distribution across every board and spinning up discussions.
A company owes us nothing. What they put out in terms of advertising is based on company self-interest in accordance with their marketing strategy.

Actually, the net effect is knowing reliably what is coming out without having to go on forums and beg for often unreliable information from potentially hostile strangers. Personally, I like getting those emails from GW. Even if the information in them is often sparing, at least what's there is reliable and I'm seeing it pretty much as soon as it's out there.

By that definition, Razorgor is their most effectively marketed model. Every time there is a "worst-of" list, people are talking about it. Surely this successful viral marketing has lead to massive sales of Razorgor, yes?

Hmm. Grey Knights.
While I do think that Grey Knights are due to be redone, as they have not had a new codex in about 7 years - 5th Edition only has 6 codexes, and only two of them (Tyranids and Dark Eldar) are non Imperial. Out of the 6 released codexes, three of them are Space Marines... (Vanilla Space Marines, Viking Space Marines and Vampire Space Marines)...
Doing Grey Knights now would put the number of power-armor v5 codexes to 4/7 and the Imperial codexes at 5/7. I think the Xenos badly need some love! Necrons is currently the oldest codex at 8 years, now that Dark Eldar has been redone. On an aside, IMHO, since GW insists on the Eldar codex being a huge mass of special rules and exceptions to core rules - this codex should be redone within the first four books EVERY edition, since even minor tweaks to the core rules has a tendency to invalidate what tenuous balance was there to begin with.

And not coincidentally, Space Marines of one kind or another are the best selling model range(s) and GW is a publicly traded for-profit corporation. Funny how that works. But seriously, how many times are forum users going to point out that Space Marines get more production resources than other model ranges? We know, we know. Moving right along... I just wish the Dark Angels or Chaos Marines would get the treatment that the Space Wolves, Codex Marines, Blood Angels and now Grey Knights are going to get! But that won't stop me from collecting some cool new Grey Knights models. By then, my Ork army should be pretty well completed and maybe some other stuff too.

I have tons of models that aren't Space Marines, as well as tons that are, but I don't waste my time and others complaining about the obvious. Space Marines are popular and get a lot of releases. It's neither news nor rumor. So yes I do blame them. All the world's problems are caused by whining about too many Space Marines releases.

I like the way the GK look but don't think GW should have bothered with them. They're just another SM army with shiny armour. Thats business I guess? Include them in another SM codex.
If GW spent as much time on the non SM armies they would be awesome, the game would be awesome.

So you say that armies should be updated on a "but what about us?" basis, and not a "because it's unusable" basis?
I would argue that they should be updated from a "if it's not broke..." point of view. Not sure if you've ever actually looked at them, but Demonhunters is pretty unusable right now. Most anything that actually pertains to their specialty (hunting daemons) doesn't actually work, and fielding an entire Grey Knight army is all but impossible. Really the only semi competitive build for them I'm aware of is to spam IST in rhinos with meltas/plasma, and even then, the IG do it better for less.
As far as Eldar go, they're not so broken they're unusable. Worst thing I can think of that you have to deal with is that Eldrich Storm scatters. Oh, and that you can lose your passengers moving flat out into terrain. That's a big one for our local Eldar player. I've only actually ran them myself one or twice though, so I wouldn't say I've read over the entire codex. Really if anything, this HELPS you, because this will close the Mystic/Inquisitor loophole and remove one more source of unlimited range Psychic Hoods.
At least the 4th edition Xenos have a chance. I will agree that Necrons need an update though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been an 'Incoming' for the Orks and Gobbo's yet, but they're expected to be arriving earlier than Grey Knights? That seems a bit odd to me...
Also, 3 months is much earlier than GW usually reveals the incoming goodies IMO.

If there were 15 factions of Tau, and each one of them had an army book updated before anyone else for the last 3 editions of the game, and each was more flavorful and potent than the last... then Tau would be "the most popular army." This notion of " GW supports what is popular" goes the other way as well. GW support MAKES things popular.

i really really didn't want to see yet another space marine army coming out.... I really do feel like this is just another example of GW's faltering mindset on 40k and its continual confirmation of it becoming financialy set on space marines (yeah its not new but its continuing trend is still not welcome) which i shall continue to bemoan this till gw ends.

I mean FFG is a much smaller company but they have their GK book listed on Amazon with a price, a date, a cover image and a blurb about what is in it.

I was hoping for a shot of the Chibihawk with grey knights coming out of it, Im really curious if they have variants, or an extra detail sprue, or metal ad on pieces, or if they are going to be exactly like the BA images, with just silver paint jobs?

So any non news parts aside, was that bit about the Grey Knights being founded just prior to the fight with Horus new? I've read the Horus Heresy books up to Nemesis and have 3 of the 4 art books before they combined them and I don't remember that bit, or that specific time mentioned in old fluff. I always thought they were founded just after Horus was defeated. Not a huge thing, but maybe the rumors about Garro and other loyalists from the Traitor Legions will be mentioned.

Yes there was, that was weeks ago. It contained no detailed info, but announced the month of release. Now the question is, not only what new GK items will be released if any beyond the basic troops in power and terminator armor, but how much will it all cost. One reason you see few GK armies around is the cost of the power armor troopers. I've collected a small force of the current range, but if the plastic basic troops cost as much in plastic as they do now in pewter I can't imagine there being a lot of huge armies of these still showing up on game tables. Then again, if they are as high points elite types as rumors suggest, one may not need that many and the price therefore may reflect that by being fairly high.

He talked about it a bit in the Grey Knights rumor thread back on Bolter & Chainsword. He's already got a basic story and names down (centers around Grey Knights and a female Inquisitor and her retinue), though stuff may change as his editors get a better look. He also wants to write a World Eaters book, though I can't remember if it's supposed to be pre- or post-Heresy.
Just google his name for his blog if you want update.

I think the general consensus is that Dark Eldar are largely balanced, as are much of Blood Angels and Tyranids. Arguably, as much as it pains me to say it, the Codices have been getting more and more balanced game-wise.
That is of course, only game-wise. I'm not looking forward to Grey Knights allying with Tyranids to fight off Tau or something. Maybe they'll combine BA and SW and have Grey Knights riding Tyranids?
Then again, haters gonna hate and all that...

E GK Termies
FA GK teleporter guys, Chibihawk
HS Dread, Landraider, Orbital Strike
All the armys will have a pretty boring similar pattern. Regardless of how cool the models are if the list variety is that 2D I don't see it going very far. Especially with no Allied rules... it's also a practice they specifically singled out in last year's stockholder report as one going the way of the dodo. they now consider their plastics to be of a quality that they can charge as much or more than the previous metals.
Exactly!
I think they're at roughly 50% cheaper/more expensive when doing this - though I, of course, may be off here.
I don't see them cutting us many breaks on an "elite" model count style army though.
And I don't see GK terminators coming in cheaper than 'regular' terminators...

My thoughts exactly. No way the Terminators are going to be cheaper than $50 US for five and they may even charge more for the power armor dudes than they do for "regular" Space Marines, especially if there are a lot of cool extras on the sprue. Some things get reduced in price when they move from metal to plastic and some do not. It depends on the kit, the model range, projected sales, in-game effects, etc. The secret "goblin index" will always come into play in pricing.

I agree they'll probably cost more, maybe even $60 for 5 GK terminators, but that's offset by the fact that they'll probably cost more points in the first place. Deathwing lists tend to be cheaper than regular Marine lists in my experience, despite the sticker shock.

I've been holding out buying some metal models to represent my sword brethren for over a year now because I don't want to chop apart what I just payed $35 per 5 for. I can't wait until I'm able to buy some plastic kits with a Knight/Crusader style helm outside of fantasy and the upgrade sprue.
All the new SpecialCharacters should be a blast for conversion projects and as representative models. Be nice to get a IC termy sprue outside of chaos marines; Could use just a single purchase for IC models in termy armour across any SM codex.
Run him $25ish with a bunch of options and I'll pick up a couple-three myself for the bits if nothing else. Roll out the plastic PAGK at $40 a box of ten and I'll grab 4 boxes to start.
Now I can't forget the one thing that I am looking forward to most: Daemonhunters Battleforce.............Probably gonna be 2xPAGK squads and 5 man termy squad with a GK hero.

Same here for the most part. I just want some GKT. Ive started working on a collection of custom/converted terminators and the GKT would make a good base for a couple conversions.

I walked into my FLGS today, which I hadn't been in for years (for anything 40k related, anyway). I was going to ask the owner, a friend of mine, if he still had my old GK army I had left there. I assumed it had been snagged in the ages I had left it there and nearly passed out from the shock that it was sitting on a shelf, with all of the for sale product, as if it was just waiting for me.
So I find about 1750 points of fully painted and based GK today AND they confirm the release date of the new Codex? Geezum crow, I must be on a hot streak.

That's exactly what I thought.
It allows us to start saving now - at least for dedicated players. Thats just my 2c.
Also, I think they have been feeding the slow drip policy for a while now - feed out information slowly, as even bad reactions still generate commentary (as it has done here) and get other people who don't care so much about precisely what is coming out (instead enjoying the fact that GK are being redone at all) to start counting pennies etc.
Plus it would be embarrassing to say 'we are releasing these things' before everything is off the production line, I'm guessing - that way if some dork drops the mould or there are manufacturing/shipping issues then they don't have to say 'whoops, I guess that's not happening for a while'.
Either way - I haven't played them for a while, but I'm looking forward to what they bring out.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Melissia wrote:Good to hear, but the least they could do is build up some fething hype by giving previews.
They will. And they have already built hype - all those who were unsure before or who were not forum fanatics out there in everyday land will see this as the first news. Plus this announcement has generated 7 pages in a day - not bad for hype either.
This way they can slowly preview stuff over the next 2 -3 months - keeping people's interests up and getting them saving dollars to splash all over the first releases.

One thing I'll say about GW, is that some things are under or over priced for their value on the battlefield, but very few things outside of the steamtank are charged more than their equivalent size brothers etc. So it comes down to fluff/codex costs to how much an army will set you back - and what your build is. Base cost for a horde army or a cheap points/expensive dollars tank list can be a hell of a lot. So can all metals.
But at least we are not fantasy players.

The most promising line in that whole "Incoming" announcement was "Although details are being kept firmly under wraps for now, you can expect an exciting selection of plastic kits to enable you to build your own Grey Knights army." I particularly like the emphasis on "exciting selection of plastic kits" in that advert.

I think that's just the nature of the Grey Knight army itself. By coupling what are arguably the most beautiful miniatures GW has made with some of the worst rules, it set up a challenge. Were you a good enough player to win with pure Grey Knights? And even though you knew, deep down within yourself, that it was foolish to try to be the best with an army that warns you in the codex that you'd be crazy to try to win even using everything in the codex, you tried. And when you won, you rejoiced. When you didn't, you bought something else. There was just enough awesomeness there to know that it would take just one more unit to make this fever dream a reality.
A guy who was winning regularly with GK was an amazing player who usually had a spectactular army that could be used to club you into submission with its weight alone. Even if you had never been one, you'd heard about those brave crusaders who were pure Grey Knights and tried to win with 25pt marines as their cheapest troop.
The GKs are not just an army- they are a legend.

Yes because 7 pages since Monday afternoon off of the back of an 8 year old picture and a date on an email is not generating hype.
No offense, but if one is to apply the standard that "even people saying you're crap" is good publicity, then the rising star of this past year must definitely be Lindsay Lohan, although she pales in comparison to the king of "hype" generation for 2011, Jared Lee Laughner (he went from almost totally unknown to (inter)national fame in 48 hours; a viral marketing explosion!).
Beyond that, the clear winner for page generation on Dakka is actually this thread; the lesson we can draw from that thread and this, I suppose then, is that if GW wants to generate "hype", release vague and cryptic announcements and sue people. Disturbingly, though I'm putting that idea forward in jest, that actually may be GW's plan for publicity...

Maybe, but I can't really see what "Anointer"/"Anointed" Armor would be for outside of a Chaplain or some kind of "spiritual"/"exorcist" character.
"Aegis" armour, after all, is the stuff layered with Hexagrammic Wards intended for the "standard" Grey Knights to be wearing.
"Artificer" armour is what rumors are saying the Sergeants will be wearing or the non-Terminator equipped characters will be wearing.

He's just confirming stuff. He says he's under a NDA, meaning he must keep a lot of stuff to himself, while still being able to put forward some stuff, like new sculpts for existing character miniatures - wouldn't be an item in my list (or most people) if I was just making things up.
Besides, stickmonkey has already proven what he's worth. Well, maybe not to you, but there must be some reason people still hold his posts in high regard.

I don't like the allies and the way they can drastically effect an army or game right now (i'm looking at You mystics!) but I do hope they keep in rules of some form for taking a unit of Grey Knights in other Imperial armies. Something Legion-Of-The-Damned-esque where they have to show up by Deep Strike, representing them showing up unannounced and unbidden by the "host" army.

Sadly, Aduro, I don't think we'll be getting that, at all.
Allies are gone for good, unfortunately.

Every time there's a codex these days there's always new plastic kits and sculpts for old and new characters. Hell, I'm sure someone in this thread or the other there's been a wishlisting post very similar to this - not to say it was copied, but that anyone could have come up with that after looking at the last few releases.
If this were someone else I could take it as being necessarily vague, but this is Stickmonkey we're talking about, who if he's proven about anything it's that he often has bad info.

It just seems like such a good move to keep it in though. To keep their age old fluff/role of a unit of Knights being used in other armies. Plus it's good marketing letting more people buy what are sure to be a higher priced kit for all the detail and doodads it's supposed to have. For rules for it you just let them have a single unit of PAGK or TAGK, no characters or anything, they have to Deep Strike, and take up an Elites slot so they're not Scoring.

Yes to psychic powers, no to Chaplains, why would they even need Librarians, or Chaplibrarians?

Yeah, and everyone would laugh together and hold hands and even Dave would put down his sword and smile.
What i ment was chaplains and librarians because of various novels stating they have them, I understand its not cannon but I like the story that the Gray Knights are one of the "Best Chapters" in the sense they have the most resources at their desposal its just how GW wants them to be implemented.

I'm not breaking NDA to clarify what I've already stated in the past, so:
1. Expect a new codex which expands the fluff greatly.
2. Expect plastic Terminator GKs, in scale and compatiable with current plastic Teminators
3. Expect plastic power armor sized GKs, whether this armor is actually aegis, annointer, artificer, etc is a mute point, they will be in scale and compatible with all other standard sized marines
4. Expect new sculpts of existing metal character minis
5. Expect a few "new" plastic kits and metal blisters (for the specific rumored kits see the numerous other threads, I'm not going to reveal anything specific here)
6. This will be a wave release, not all of the units of the codex will be represented by models in the release or current ranges
7. IMHO, the models are some of the best sculpts I've ever seen out of GW.

Once again, stickmonkey is as reliable as a redshirt (read: not reliable at all). Half of what he posts never comes to fruition or is just plain wrong, I doubt he is under any sort of NDA whatsoever, otherwise GW is feeding him a lot of misinformation (or maybe its just a general lack of information).

The problem sometimes with some of the omnipresent sources that appear over and over again as the forum news/rumors generators is that it's clearly so important to them to be the first to post news or rumors that the attention they seek for doing so is obviously at times more important than actually providing reliable information. And every forum has a user or two like that. I can think of one forum where virtually every post in the rumors area is by one person and they blatantly get annoyed on the occasions someone else beats them to it. It's some kind of weird ego-feeding game for some people and the nastiness that occurs in every rumors section in every 40K forum I've ever seen is proof of that. Generating information is what it's about for some, while others seem to get their kicks from denigrating the news provided by others if they think they can find an implausibility in it to attack, real or imagined. And as we know, many bits of good information have been scoffed at over the years because of that little game. For the people who don't wish to play those toxic games the rumors area of forums is often off limits, and I've had at least one well-respected hobbyist tell me he stays away from both the rumors and general discussion area of this very forum because of the nasty games played there.
But, back to the Grey Knights rumors themselves, it's not like some info hasn't already leaked out in spite of the lack of pictures and some of the rumors are assuredly real info because it always seems to run like that. So, for those people planning to start or add to their GK force, maybe we should buy and paint a Stormraven as soon as it appears in February in preparation for using it with GK in April.

Actually, the REAL problem is people going to a Rumors thread/forum and expecting to get facts.
We have two current facts:
1) Grey Knights are (Currently) scheduled to be released in April, 2011
2) Some new plastics will be released (how many, what and when they will be released are still unknown)
Anything else is RUMOR or NDA breaking and unconfirmable leaks

I was kinda hoping that they'd pull something out of the fluff something along the lines of the Grey Knights being founded by Nathaniel Garro (Flight of the Eisenstein ends with 3 people being suggested as the beginings of the Inquisition, Garro would make a perfect head of Ordos Malleus, Qruze for Ordos Xenos and Kendel for Ordos Hereticus... or something... meh)

The most recent Codex books have been loaded with special named characters and creatures, so there will probably be something fun like that in the new book.

Yeah, no it doesn't. It just "confirms" that Garro and the other survivors seem to be the ones who founded the Inquisition(or at least what laid the groundwork to later become the Inquisition).
I doubt we'll see Garro as a special character.

What's the point of Librarians in an organization that is entirely made of Psykers who are equivalent to the Librarians of the mainstream Chapters? I've also never seen mention of Grey Knight Librarians. Deathwatch Librarians are a stalwart piece of fiction that likely isn't going anywhere.
Grey Knight "Chaplains" however, yeah. They've been mentioned at least once or twice.
It's important to remember that while Grey Knights are "one of the best Chapters"...they're also a Chapter that's, historically, been geared and trained for one thing. Exposing and cleansing Daemonic infestations and taints.
Anything beyond that is weird and new and scares me.

I am apprehensive about this codex.
I collected Deamonhunters for the Inquisitorial side rather than Grey Knights, who came about for me at a much later time.
I like my IST army and my Inquisitor units.
I get the bad feeling that this is going to ruin a large part of my collection and turn it into something similar vain of BA :/

I can't guarantee they won't make ISTs as Troops require some kind of special character, but rarely does GW like to invalidate units from a previous codex. Keep your hopes up!

I think that a lot of people won't have a problem playing against your previous edition Daemonhunters army. There is a guy who still brings a Lost and the Damned list to my FLGS and nobody has refused to play him.

I have already had WHFB pretty much invalidated because I hate the lack of force chart etc.
I just really hope GK are unique and not the next bigger, better, harder Space Marine army.

not even close, dude. just because that particular army didn't come with any super-power builds doesn't mean that it was invalidated. there is a difference between being having the overall power level nerfed compared with other codicies and having your army *poof* out of existence.

They didn't *Poof* it out of existance though. GW (might have) made it so that a SC will allow your ISTs to be taken as troops. Just because that particular army isn't as powerful as it is now doesn't mean it's invalidated either. I know, it sucks, but cheer up a little, at least they didn't take ISTs out entirely... Though I do own 2 Squads of the buggers, wonder if they will make good Henchmen...

And a SC means I have to take it to take my army that, is something that I have never been keen on. This is part of why I am thinking that it is going to either fly or sink.

so how exactly would you play those leman russ tanks some players currently have along with their inducted guard platoons complete with heavy and special weapon squads in with their codex GK stuff? some armies do indeed go *poof* with the loss of inducted/allied guard/marines.

I wasn't speaking about allied armies, I was talking about IST armies...
Anyway, we will have to see the Codex first. IST armies may or may not be viable, but again, the SC will need to be evaluated first by the player to determine whether or not they want to make use of him.

This is assuming they even go the way of the Special Character. ISTs or their equivalents could be Troops Choices alongside PAGK for all we know.
EDIT: I mean, Blood Angels didn't get Scouts as Elites just because they kept Tacticals and Assault Squads as Troops.

Apples and oranges.
When the current 'Nid Codex came out Tyranids didn't cease to exist. You could still play Tyranids. Your specific army mightn't be viable, or even legal, any more - but Tyranids were still an active race in the game that could be played with an updated Codex. Things changed, but you didn't lose anything (ie. all the units that had been there were still there). Once the Grey Knight Codex hits, my Daemonhunters army ceases to be (aside from some generic Henchmen, Storm Troopers, and a Special Character to make 'em troops) as everything shifts gears and this becomes not an Inquisitorial Codex with a Chamber Militant, but another Space Marine Codex with some additional units to placate DH players. It's not as bad as when my Lost & The Damned army got Squatted, but it's close. And I get to go through it again when the Witch Hunters Codex gets mutated into Codex: Sisters of Battle.
The irony of it all is that the one Chamber Militant I did get a whole army of (Deathwatch) never even got a Codex in the first place.

Well, Im sort of expecting them to top SW as far as power/cheese.
I also wouldnt be surprised to see them majorly revamp things and cause a bit of " WTF my army is useless now". Think about it, GW wants to make money...releasing a codex that allows people to use their existing armies with out having to buy anything other than a $30 book wont make them much money. However, a major restructure that invalidates at least 1/2 of a players existing army, causing them to buy many new minis, along with buying the new book...that makes a good chunk of money.
I do feel for you folks a bit, but since I dont use the 40k rules system, and Im only in GK for some of the minis, I dont care at all what they do to the codex.

Heh. Ditto. I've got 6 squads as well, all mounted in Valks. I've even converted some to be 'Officiers' (even though they don't really have any), and even made a Storm Trooper Starndard Bearer for fun (not that converting it was fun - headswaps on Storm Trooper models is a PAIN).
And ever time someone says "Well you can just take a special character" I die a little inside. I don't want to take a Special Character. I don't want to need to take a Special Character to play my army. I want to be able to take my own characters to play the army I already have, not someone else's character to keep playing the army I built. If they had decided to scrap the Blood Angels and just said that the Assault Marines could be taken as Troops in a Space Marine army if a BA Special Character was taken as your HQ, do you think people would have been ok with that? Of course not!
So why should we? Because we're 'just' Inquisitorial players, and we're not important?

Right, and I wasn't talking about power-levels. I was talking about builds being invalidated. Not to H.B.M.C.'s level, it sounds like, but people that had builds that they had based years of gaming on saw their army disappear. Sure, they still had the models and had to 'adapt or die', but it doesn't mean that they just roll over and say, "Oh well, the army I've become comfortable with isn't even playable. Shucks."
It affects them negatively. Some so much that they stop playing that particular army or stop playing 40K altogether because they can't afford anything new. One guy at our FLGS hasn't been around since the new Tyranid codex dropped and that's all he played. Usually, he was at every event. Now, not even one. Knowing him, it is probably because his build was neutered and he doesn't have the resources to start up again or begin a new army. Granted this is speculation, but it sucks when that happens to anyone, on any level.

Well that'd be nice. I use a lot of Inquisitors in my armies - and yes, they all have background fluff and names and the whole shebang. My Inquisitorial army is a very fluff-driven force. Because they are insane and have a story. And few people I have met play them. Sure Knight and Sisters are played but not the Ordos themselves.
And as a long time player, 7 years in August, I have actually won more games with them than anything else, maybe it is the fact that I tend to play radical with assassins and deamonhosts etc but it is my longest standing army by far. My Marines are as generic as can be but only 3 years old, and olny started as I wanted to do an Apocalypse Imperial Crusade.
And yet I reckon it is going to be this that is hurt by this up date.
I have just repainted 43 of my IST and I fear that they are going to be side-lined for Ironically the thing that interested me least in the whole of the Imperium.

I understand your concern H.B.M.C (although I haven't experienced it), but to be fair, we don't know what will or won't be viable until we see the Codex. Yes, it's Games-Workshop so we shouldn't hold too much hope, particularly after your past experiences, but I wouldn't say we can say these things with such certainty.
Even so, this sounds like a good idea...

I doubt any units are going to be invalidated, but Grey Knights needed change, and now they are getting it. No point crying over spilt milk guys, its not like you grey knight players didnt get the longest time to play your old armies.
Live and let live, forgive and forget, build a new army, using some of your old units. I welcome this change, so stop complaining!

I'm very interested in this release personally. I love the Inquisition. I'm going to have to get a Grey Knight army on the side along with my Sister of Battle army. I'm a bit concerned with how the whole way the Inquisition is going to work; with the whole commanders unlocking troops. Its a shame that it'll be impossible or more difficult to field Inqusitorial Stormtroopers and Grey Knights/Sisters of Battle; though I guess I can see the reason for it.
Hopefully the Inquisition itself will get some unique units for the Inquisitor.

yeah, all the stuff we've heard so far points to all the units in the current daemonhunters codex being useable in the new grey knights codex in some form or other (except for daemonhosts? Not heard much about them actually).
So, I'm sure that IST etc etc will be perfectly viable options. What I'm hoping we don't see is a kind of 'either, or' scenario whereby you can only take GK as troops OR IST as troops or something like that.
Being newish to the game (been collecting GK since last september) I don't know whether anything like this 'either or' thing exists in other codices but I'm quite looking forward to being able to have a mostly GK army supplemented by IST and the various assassins. I think it's important that they make this possible and perhaps, expected. Right now pure GK aren't very flexible tactically at all and I want to play an army that's more flexible and interesting.

Deamon hosts are still in the codex. there still is the restriction that no GKs be present when you have one.
unfortunantly, i heard they still suck.

Does anyone else REALLY HOPE that Grey Knights have some level of resistance to Chaos Daemons Warp-Powers? I for one am pretty sick of having my GK Grandmaster being turned into a Chaos Spawn as easily as a common Guardsman would be.

the chaos daemon codex is a bit funky... some of the powers are considered psychic while others aren't so he wouldn't get the aegis rule vs them. i suspect he's having problems with that.

Yeah they pretty much confirm that garro recruits the first grey knights in Garro - Oath of Moment.
Yeah, no it doesn't. It just "confirms" that Garro and the other survivors seem to be the ones who founded the Inquisition(or at least what laid the groundwork to later become the Inquisition).
I doubt we'll see Garro as a special character.
My mistake most be just a coincidence the word grey is used like five times in the audio book.
And no I wasn’t expecting garro to be in the new codex.

As I pointed out elsewhere:
Just because he's wearing grey armor with no livery, at all, on it doesn't mean he "founds the Grey Knights". It just means he's wearing armor with no livery on it, ala the recently introduced "Blackshields" who come to the Deathwatch.

It’s not only the colour of the armour there’s lots of not very subtle references in the book. Like when MALCADOR tells him something along the lines that he stands between the light and the dark.
The words grey and knight are frequently used.

Erm, so what?
It's the Grey(actually silver) Knights.
Not the Grey Night.
And it's also worth, again, stating that Malcador at the end of "Flight of the Eisenstein" refers to a need for "individuals of an inquisitive nature".

I am excited for the new codex, which I will enjoy reading until the pages fall out of it, but I honestly am not astarting another marine army since I already have 2, and am starting a 3rd just because most of my deathwatch players wanted to be BA, I think its time to start a xeno army by now, one that is not nids.

Isn't there a bit of fluff that states that most Grey Knights do not adorn their armor without anything beyond the chapter symbol and hexagrammic wards, and only at Justicar/Terminator rank do they get a bit of heraldry allowed?
Not saying you're wrong, but that doesn't exactly disprove the theory, either.

Not that I recall off the top of my head. And if you look, the standard brothers wear the heraldry of the Justicar.
Plus there's always the problem of the Grey Knights wearing bright silvered armor, chased with gold filligree for the hexagrammic wards.
Garro's described as just wearing primer grey Astartes plate.

Does this strike anyone else as being...well, generic? Like any of us could have come up with this list without being given any knowledge of what's being released?
He's just confirming stuff. He says he's under a NDA, meaning he must keep a lot of stuff to himself, while still being able to put forward some stuff, like new sculpts for existing character miniatures - wouldn't be an item in my list (or most people) if I was just making things up.
Besides, stickmonkey has already proven what he's worth. Well, maybe not to you, but there must be some reason people still hold his posts in high regard.
I would tend to agree on that. Stickmonkey is the same guy that said a couple of weeks ago that GK were getting pushed back 'til late summer at the earliest so GW could pump out more DE models. When you're that far off on a production schedule like that only a week or so before an official announcement,I'm sorry, but you're not really "In the know." This revised list of "rumors" is nothing that anybody can't figure out for themselves.
1.Expanded fluff-Pretty standard, and expected with the codex shift towards GK and away from =I=.
2.Plastic Termies-Yeah,I think we all could figure out the new Termies would be plastic.
3.Plastic PAGK-Once again, pretty easy to figure out,as the metal troops were one of the reasons for slow sales the first time around.
4.New sculpts for SC's-Well,Stern and Coteaz are the only SC's from the original codex, but it makes sense that Stern would get a new fig to scale properly to the new plastic Termies.
5."New" kits-Well,duh. Every army gets brand new units/kits with every new release.
6.Wave release-Pretty much standard practice by GW,now. Not surprising.
7.Great sculpts-Not surprising, seeing as how the metal GK's are some of the best sculpts GW has ever done.

Stickmonkey has said repeatedly that he is routinely fed minsinformation.
That being said... His original rumor set was pretty much dead on,(from what we can tell) with a bunch of stuff waiting on codex release to be confirmed.
Dunno why you guys have to bash on people who are trying their best to provide the community with information. It amazes me that people who try to help the community out by giving us info that we wouldnt already have get based for not being 100% accurate.

That about sums it up there. To claim to be "in the know", make a supposed official claim, then have it be extremely wrong should prove once and for all he is a poor source. Automatically Appended Next Post: wolfshadow wrote:

The problem is...bad/wrong information is not a help at all, it tends to cause trouble. If he knows he is getting bad information then he should keep it to himself. Knowingly spreading bad/wrong information is just stupid.

Uh, Stickmonkey has always said to take what he says witha grain of salt, as GW routinely give him misinformation, and/or the possibility of what he sees being subject to change.
What he posts over @ Warseer is often taken to other sites without context.
The later in the game, the less he can say, or he just repeats what he said earlier.
Rumors are RUMOURS... not fact.
Anybody getting up in arms becasue someone git a rumor wrong, when GW routinely changes things at the last minute.... is more than a little silly IMHO.

I think people more have an issue with the fact that false information propagates itself (like you, yourself, pointed out with the out of context stuff being copy/pasted onto other sites). It shows that he is extremely arrogant that he posts any and all information, with the caveat to take it all with a grain of salt, just so his name gets spread around the intrawebs. You act like he is some prophet, trying to bring us enlightenment, when a true rumor monger gets legitimate stuff he knows is essentially true and posts it, or doesn't post anything. He was clearly fed completely false information, reported it as a viable rumor and then was caught on it immediately. That doesn't make him a bad guy, or a pariah, but it does prove that his rumors are pretty inconsistent and that people should probably stop spreading his word like gospel.

It's one thing to get a rumor about a release date wrong. But have you seen the stuff he posted in lieu of the Tyranid codex? Completely off base. I've yet to see anyone defend him with actual evidence of stuff he's gotten right, and not just by coincidence.
EDIT: Now with link!

I'm not sticking my head out for anyone, but there've been some posters in Warseer (can't exactly recall who, Harry/Hastings) that said that it isn't that unusual to change release schedules. We'll have to wait and see if he's wrong about the Sisters of Battle rumour.
And it's not so straight that old characters get new miniatures. Mephiston didn't, Calgar only got it because they gave him TDA, Dante didn't, Ragnar and Logan didn't. If Stern doesn't get an update, as I think SM implied, then I'll give you reason. I was fairly positive that he posted good info, but then again I can be wrong and got posters mixed up.
I don't believe he's doing it for "evil purposes" however. Saying that he gets more info right than wrong and shouldn't post is absurd, however. He's posting rumours, fer christsake, and I don't see how that can get some peopel into such an agitated state.
EDIT: He commented what he saw on design stages. It's kinda off to blast him for that... I mean, first GW is blasted because they don't reveal too much, and this guy gets flak because he reveals too much from his NDA.
I just think that some people are giving too much importance to miniature rumours, that's all.

It's more economical to give Stern new rules that make him viable than it is to make a whole new model. it just makes more sense make their current model sell more via the rules.
The only reason for a new Stern is if the new GK Termies look different enough from the old metal ones to warrant a redone model.

ignoring the price for a second, I would like to say I hate metal miniatures, and would happily see every metal mini changed to plastic any day, theres no advantage.
Plastic is easier to glue and to paint IMO, YMMV. I welcome the change, since I plan to be termie heavy.

So instead of having IG, DH, and IG+ DH, you will only have IG and DH? If you have multiple LR tanks and multiple platoons outfitted with multiple support squads, you can't have that many points left over for much besides an Inquisitor and maybe some GKT's.
HBMC wrote:my Daemonhunters army ceases to be (aside from some generic Henchmen, Storm Troopers, and a Special Character to make 'em troops)
Looking at the current codex, we have the following non- GK units:
Inquisitors
Henchmen
Daemonhosts
Death-Cult Assassins
Officio Assassins
Inquisitorial Storm Troopers
As far as I know, all the current rumours point to assassins being in as well as inquisitors with a retinue option. That leaves Daemonhosts. You're losing daemons from your Daemon Hunter army. How does that equate losing your entire army? Will you have to run a special character? Quite possibly, but so what? Just rename the SC. Instead of Lord Inquisitor Henchmenastroops, call him Lord Admiral Herman Prescott. Model him with a weapon loadout that looks fairly similar to the SC whose rules he'll be using and you're in business.
Alternatively, run your IST's as an IG mechvet army. Your army isn't led by a Company Command Squad; it's led by Inquisitor Prescott and his trusty henchmen.

I paint my Knights with metallics/silver, then give them a protective coat that makes them more shiny! Both metallics and matte grey are equally valid, it's mostly up to the painter.
With regards to the update, I'm excited, since I play pure Grey Knights. It'll be nice to have some plastic in the army aside from backpacks and land raiders. I can't wait to see some pictures of the new models.
I generally reserve my judgement on the actual codex for when I can take a look at a physical copy, but I hope it isn't a let down!

i guess that's true if you only play 1000pt games or less but most people don't. Leman Russ tanks with sponsons only cost 170pts each so 340 there... most common platoon i've seen is with 4 squads and a heavy/special squad each = 410pts depending on the loadout (this is with flamers/grenadelaunchers/misslelaunchers). You can take 2 tanks and a decent sized platoon for 750pts which is half the size of the "standard" 1500pt game (most people around here play 1750-2000). In fact, you can fit in a GK grand master, a terminator squad, and two additional gk squads into 1500pts along side it. with the allies gone, this person now has a 750pt too-small-to-play separate IG army and GK army. if this change is true, it does affect people out there (not me personally) and denying that is foolhardy. is it a change for the better for the rest of us? who knows until the codex comes out.

Except he has never fed us anything that was accurate that we didn't already know. Most of the stuff he says is more like wishlisting, and usually ends up being entirely wrong. The stuff that ends up being correct is usually generic stuff like the above which everyone knows but nobody has really thought about it because its so obvious. He's not really helping anyone, except trying to gain some internet street cred for himself.
Furthermore, stating that he is routinely fed misinformation is a cop-out. It's basically a "I'm covering my own butt because I know there is an extremely high likelihood that what I am telling you will never come to pass and I need a valid reason for it." Toy soldiers isn't an intelligence op or anything. GW isn't constantly making up false rumors to mislead everyone or to try and root out some sort of perceived leak or something. He is either getting information, or he isn't getting information. There is no misinformation, except for information that he receives that gets changed during the process of a development cycle.
Anybody getting up in arms becasue someone git a rumor wrong, when GW routinely changes things at the last minute.... is more than a little silly IMHO.
GW doesn't change things at the last minute. It takes 2-3 months (even longer for more advanced/larger kits) for the mold-making process to be completed (from the time the final design is submitted to the time the tooling is finished). Add at least another month of production time onto that in order for GW to produce enough kits to send out shipments to all the pre-orders/stores, etc. This means there is at least 4 months (a third of a year) from the time a kit design is completed to the time it is available for purchase by the public at large.
Likewise, rulebooks have a lead time for production. Granted, it is shorter than the lead time for a model kit, but we're still looking at a 3 month period from the time the text is locked in to the time its available for purchase. This means that if Grey Knights are coming out in early April, the model kits have been finalized, and while there might still be minor tweaks to the rules, chances are they were about 90% there months ago.
My guess is that stickmonkey is a second hand source. He most likely gets his info from a redshirt that gets to hear/see something once in a blue moon and either doesn't understand fully understand what he is seeing/hearing, or makes a bumch of stuff up to fill in obviously large gaps.
Ah, how I miss the days of Brimstone. Now HE was a true rumor-monger, reliable as reliable could be. I drink in his honor!
