Baneblade refurbishment. Labour of love. 29th Jan New wips @ 2011/01/17 13:31:51

Post by: Truffle

Hi guys.

Ive decided to have a fun project to run alongside getting my tournament guard army ready for the april throne of skulls.

Basicly I have 2 forgeworld Baneblades that are in a bit of a state. One is wisemans Baneblade its about 7 years old and is quite heavily beat up. It has had 2 paint jobs since I got it and is in need of some love and affection.

The second is a mars pattern Baneblade. This one was got second hand and is in even worse shape than the first one. I have no idea how old it is and I dont have the unique forgeworld ID number for it which is a shame.

I fished the wiseman one out a little while ago and I have taken some pictures of it in its current state so you can see what I am going to be working with. I will paint strip it after I have set up this thread and updated my tournament guard thread which has been neglected a bit as Ive been quite ill.

So here you go.

Thats it for now I will put more pics up when I have stripped it in a little while. I hope you all enjoy the process of getting these 2 awsome models back to working order.

Awesome, long time since I saw one of forgeworlds baneblades. GW's are everywhere these days (nothing bad in that).

Your right I myself have a pair of the plastic ones, one in a chaos army and one in my marine army.

But the plastic ones just dont compare to the forge world ones in detail or stature not in my opinion.

I have given the main body of the first Baneblade its first coat of stripper here are the pictures. I will not that this currently looks in real bad shape. This is normal for the paint stripping process I use. The first coat has totally removed the top layer of paint and most of the second layer. There is still a gak load of the first undercoat left on the model but this should nearly all come off with the next strip. Also there has been heavy damage to the model in terms of parts falling off like the drums and demolisher cannon. This again is normal the paint stripper tends to weaken the bond in the superglue but this is not a problem in fact I want the track systems to fall off as they are hard to strip while on the model.

So still lots to do before the model is even ready to repair let alone paint.

More to come maybe tonight I will strip it again when I get home as I have to go out in a little while.

Great start, always a fan of recommissioning these old veterans, did the same with a lightening strike fighter not too long ago.

I'll be checking out your other thread too, got to love a bit of guard.

Glad to see some one who feels the same. I will give it a second strip after tea and post the pics up maybe a couple of hours from now.

And yeah cant have to much guard.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right here are the pictures after the main hull has had its second strip. Most of the paint is gone now what is left is so thin that once reprimed you wouldnt know it was there. I still need to go over some of the small holes and corners with a scalpal to get the gunk out then its ready for repairs to begin and of course I need to do the guns and everything that broke off the hull. I will start them wednesday night.

On a more anoying note I could not dislodge the track systems which made cleaning the model much harder.
It would seem I built it a bit to well and as you can see some more parts have broken off some small bits like pipes are terminal and will have to be rebuilt with greenstuff and other materials.

Great Idea! I've put my own guard army on hold for the moment as it had just all got too much so doing a marine army as a break. I'm amazed how well it is cleaning up actually! I really though the paint stripper might do stuff to the resin.
Very true that you can never have too many guard particularly tanks I'm running at 7 super heavies at the moment!

Baneblade refurbishment. Labour of love. 29th Jan New wips @ 2011/01/18 20:58:24

Post by: Truffle

The paint stripper I use will do plastic resin and metal with no effect at all on the material. It costs quite a lot thought. Its called removeALL 220 if you want to search for it. You can get it in the UK and America. My guard army runs at about 25 000 points ive only got the 2 baineblades but I have about 40 tanks and a gak tone of infantry. Working on refurbing the entire lot.

If you check out my other guard thread you will see most of the models in there have been through the refurbishment Im getting quite good at it.

Now doing the pics so watch this space.

Ok here is a pair of pics of the parts that wernt on or fell off the hull.

I am no starting the rebuilding part of the project.

Getting there

That is one hell of a tank! And it's looking good- I look forward to seeing it fully recomissioned and back in service.

Out of interest, how big is it compared to a 'normal' tank?

Yes its a shame that since the "cheaper" plastic baneblade came out you dont very often see this model anymore.

You just had to take a picture on what looks like a nice comfy bed didn't you? It's early, I'm tired and don't want to be awake. Yargh.

On topic however, I think it's gonna look great once painted up. Have fun with it.

Looking mate. Out of interest are you using Badab Black for washing on these models? If so then perhaps you should check this out as a sub, help to save some cash.

Post by: Truffle

Yes that would be my bed

The only parts of the models that get washed are the tracks and guns all silver bits basicly which int a huge amount. They then mostly get a was of devlan mud over that to give them and aged look. You cant really tell in the pictures.

So yes the paint is expensive but I dont use that much. What I could do with is a pot of gryponesepia? that size as my entire marine army is washed that colour to form its base colour. If they do one of them I would love to try and get one to test.

Baneblade refurbishment. Labour of love. 29th Jan New wips @ 2011/01/20 15:31:07

Post by: Lennysmash

I don't think they do Sepia. I've seen the marines though they've been a little neglected of late haven't they? I'm still reading through the blog a little each day. Loved the mud effect from the thunderfire tracks, I'm thinking of trying it out my self as I'm constructing a small Doom Legion force whic obviously I can't battle damage very well as they are already all metal.

Back on to washes you may want to check out AwesomePaintJob's wash recipes on youtube. The video will give you the basics to make gallons of washes for probably the cost of ten pots.

I will check them out. Yes marines have been ignored as Im in guard mode. I will do soem more of them aftter this is all done. Got lots of marine stuff to do. Glad people still look at the thread.

I dont want to cover the engine bits up as thats how its ment to be. I did think about giving it like some camo cloaks or something but dint want to cover it up.

I figured there would be some one else on here that did airsoft or knew some one that did.

The model is just black atm the light in my rooms gak so I have to use the flash to get a decent image but it makes an all black model look shiney.

Will start painting the main hull section tomorrow.

Just a quick update so you dont think I have stopped work.

Painted the three mini gun turrets today think its starting to look quite nice. Cant take a picture at the minute though as its night time and the light in my room is gak.

I have also done quite a bit of the metal work on the hull but it bores me real fast so Im doing a little at a time. Got to run the local club tomorrow night so I shant be working on the hull as I dont want to cart the tank and my army around town but I willt ake the main turret and do that and hopefully some more of my normal guard army (managed to paint a couple of veterans today while wash dried on turrets)

Anyway its getting there Ill get you some more pics soon.

Not the best pics in the world I think I need to get my sis to lend me her slr for a day so I can get some really good ones for you. These just dont do the metal work justice.

For the freehand, the trick is to thin down you paint a lot, then dot out the design that you want. Once that is done, you just need to fill the design in. Failing that, you could always use some big transfers on the side as they can look very nie if they are put on properly.

Thanks you 2 glad you like it so far. The metal colour is easy its just boltgun metal heavy washed black then heavy washed devlan mud if you want to use it.

For the numbers there is a great how to in my "bible" the Imperial Armour model masterclass volume one available from forge world and you basically don't need to be able to paint all that well! It involves a stencil some sand and hairspray! Lol! If you want me to try and relate the technique for you just let me know, you might of course have the book but just didn't know it was in there.

Post by: Reaper Man 2020

Ok the guy in the book wanted to make a weathered and old looking number mark on the side of the tank, so he used the following technique;

This is a direc tQuote from the book and is the IP of Forge World;
1. A vinyl number mask was placed on to the tank. These masks can be found in any art/craft store for use in card decorating.
2. Masking tape was used to protect a large area around the mask, hair spray was then sprayed onto the area. while the hairspray was still wet, sand was sprinkled onto the area.
3. Once the hairspray had dried, the area was then sprayed with an off-white colour. Once the paint had dried , the mask was removed.
4. Because the sand was only held in place with hair spray, it can easily be rubbed off with a cloth, exposing the colour below.
5. The final result should look suitably aged, weathered and distressed.

The book is amazing and is only £26 best thing I ever bought! modeling porn!

Heres the link to the Forge World site where you can buy it:

http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Modelling-Supplies/IMPERIAL-ARMOUR-MODEL-MASTERCLASS-VOLUME-ONE.html

Hope that helps!

I wouldnt want the aged look but doing that with just the number but not the sand might give me what I want. I shall hunt about for some of them vinal numbers.

Done some more of the hull. Its a bit hit and miss still doing the metal work as I get bored of painting boltgun I do some washing so its a bit randomly coloured at the minute. The left track (as you look at the front is done so that give you and idea of how the rest of the metal will look but yeah pics.

Right folks. I have not done much painting of anything the last 2 weeks but in that time the 2 new gaming tables have been built for the club I run. This means that soon it will be time for some massive games.

With that in mind I thought that really my guard army need to have at least one of my good old super heavy tanks finished and looking lovely.

So the last couple of days I have been working on the Baneblade. It is not yet finished but has come a long way. I have done its company markings, its mud and a little more work to the metal sections of the tank. "really not in the mood to paint metal atm".

So here are some pictures of the progress. I hope you like. I will point out that they are slightly dark. I need a new daylight bulb so note the dirt can be seen more in real life.

I am quite happy with how it is turning out and its starting to look nice along side the other painted tanks.

It still need a lot of metal parts painting and all of its purity seals and scrolls doing. I will add its unique id number to the side of the turret and also do gun bur on the end of the main cannon the demolisher cannon and maybe the autocannon?

Please share your thoughts and feedback guys.

Thanks.

Purity seals and parchments have been done now. The main guns have had their burn affect added on. Just the windows and whats left of the metal work to do and add id number to the main turret.

Im really happy with how this is coming along and think its goning look real nice next to the rest of the army.

No comments on the photos lately though? CC please and any thoughts?

I'm not sure what Porkandbeans meant by that comment. I would possibly change the wire colour to something less pink! Maybe blue?

I love the id number, is it stencilled or a transfer or something?

Baneblade refurbishment. Labour of love. 29th Jan New wips @ 2012/01/04 22:05:51

Post by: Truffle

You cant change the pink man the whole army has pink wires and purple windows its a feature

The ID numbers are silver vinal numbers brought from a craft shop in sheets.

I spray the whole sheet skull white and then apply them to the models. They how brilliant I have never had one fall off and they have no edge like a transfer. Tones and tones of people have thought they were hand painted only to be shocked they are vinals.

On another note being a "real" baneblade. That id number is the forgeworld unique id that every model got back in them days. I am afraid I dont know the id of the second baneblade I have though :(

I have also added more metal work to the sponsons to try and see if that broke them up a bit after it being pointed out that they are letting the tank down.

Hope you are liking it

Right its the big viewing. The first baneblade is finished. Here are pics for your enjoyment.

I hope you all lik it

On a different note. I have started the work on the second baneblade. Things arnt good at the minute. I dunno what the guy who had it before me base coated it with but that gaks putting up a fight. Its been through a very heavy paint stripping process and is still not ready for it to be repaired and base coated. The entire tank has fallen apart. Nearly every thing is broken.

I will take some photos later but I can say without a dought that number 2 is going to be a long hard project.

Ok guys. Here she is. This might be one of the saddest images Ive ever seen of a model.

Not even close to ready to be rebuilt yet but im getting there. Some parts need more stripping and there is so much damage to others that well, long road ahead.

Wow looks great! The purple adds a bit of something unique, and I love how the details are picked out so well.

The resin baneblade is clearly superior. I can just tell.

Nice work, the FW Lucius Baneblade is my favorite and I don't think the GW plastic version is at all comparable unless some drastic alterations are performed. (IMHO) . I rescued a derelict from ebay years ago and she is still the best Super Heavy I have.

Good to see Im not the only one. I have a little update. Started the repairs today here are pics.

Just got the main hull back together and got the sponsons on it. This one will take much more than the first to sort out.

Also today I won another mar patter baneblade on ebay. So a full squad can be done.

Nothing has the panache of a FW Mars Pattern Baneblade 'sept mebbe the Lucius pattern. That 2 pounds of sculpted resin just screams badass something the lightweight GW plastic version can only aspire to. Nice to see you are forging ahead with the restoration.

Good luck I'll be watching.

Some prgogress today. The heavy bolter side gun is back on, the demolisher cannon is back on and I have remounted the main gun into the turret.

The biggest bit of progress though is that I have started work on rebuilding the massivly damaged track systems. Heres the pics

Good luck on that one, I tried casting the treads out of aircraft epoxy that came out rather good but you need the pieces to make the mould.

When I restored my tanks the bogies seemed like a daunting task because I was new to scratchbuilding. Now they would be a piece of cake to build. I'll offer suggestions if you wish.

Hope you have the treads; they have to be sculpted.

I was just looking through your thread. I like them brass lascannons. The lascannons on this tank are trashed at the ends of the barrels i was just gonna remould them with green stuff as they are to small to replace with plastic ends.

I have all the parts for the tank so I dont need to worry about the tracks they are jsut a bit screwed up and will never look perfect. But as long as the ones at the front and back are ok it does not matter as this girls never being turned upside down in game dead or not

So yeah my plan is to spray the screwed up guns with acid car primer so that I can see them better as they are hard to define at the minute. Then I can greenstuff them then prime the whole tank ready for painting after I have added any extras like storage.

FYI I didn't solder the brass together but used cyanoacetate glue instead, I used the thinnest evergreen rod to simulate the wire bundle along side the barrel three or four strands I guess and I used a razor saw to cut the flash suppressors (On a Laser Gun ?)

Sorry to hyjack your thread I'll edit the image size when I get home from work.

Will get some more of the tank rebuilt tomorrow I hope. Before I go and run the local club.

Right I just primed the little turrets and the side sponsons of the baneblade so that I could see how buggered up the ends were.

They are rough as hell.

Here are my thoughts. It might be easier to just cut the heavy bolter barrels off and replace them with some plasticard tubing of the same size with a hole drilled through the side of it.

I also have a pair of plastic baneblade lascannon turrets upstairs and they are also tiny so If i cut the barrels off them and used them to replace the resin barrels?

Ideas guys do you think this could work?

Brilliant news everyone. Baneblade 3 just arrived in the post and it is nearly perfect condition!

Here are 2 quick snaps do note all the white fluff is what is left of the material storage the owner had put on. I will clean this off easy with a knife.

Basicly from what I can tell so far heres what it needs. All the tiny turrets were glued on. The lascannons came off clean and eprfect but the heavy bolter snapped its joint inside the gun so this will need a new system built in the form of bras rod for it to sit on.

The gak left from his material stuff needs to be cleaned off.

The transfers need filein off.

It needs a hatch.

The bottom tacks need gluing back on. This tank was based and on pulling it off the base the bottom tracks came off and suffered some damage. Light compared to my 2 baneblades so no problem to fix.

Then the really good news. Im pretty sure I can just repain this tank black and it will be fine with no need for paint stripper That saves me a lot of money time and effort and saves the tank from taking massive damage like the other 2 did.

What do you guys think? Any more ideas on what to do to it?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right folks. I have been working on getting baneblade 3 ready for repaint as I was not in the mood to spend time on the more damaged second tank tonight.

Heres the progress. The searchlight broke and has been repaired at a lower level. The crap left from the strange material he stuck over the tank has been removed. Damaged parts that this caused have been filed down and cleaned up.

The tracks have been reglued. This shew me a couple of issues. It appears that a track link is missing on one side (photo included in a moment) Also one of the fron tracks was damaged and really anoying me once i noticed it. To fixe this I have broken of the front unit and ordered some more tracks. Strangely enough you can still order forgeworld baneblade track units in 4s for 5 quid. Dunno why but it helps me a lot and as i got the tank so cheap (£46) I dont mind throwing a fiver at the tracks.

The heavy bolter turret has been drilled so it can now sit on the tank and turn. Little bits of mould lines and stuff have been filed down and cut off.

The main turret has had an ammo box added to the back where a material storage thing had been. When i removed the material i found the aquila under it was fethed so I filed it down and added a box.

I have also added a hatch to the turret and filed down the ends of the lascannons to neaten them up.

Now I cant go much more into the painting untill I get the new tracks which wont be untill next week at best but I can repaint the turrets. That will start sunday as tomorrow im busy.

Anyway here are pics.

Lowered searchlight.

The removed front track section

The missing bottom track link

Back of the turret

The mini heavy bolter turrets new mount.

Side shot showing the side of the turret where material storage was. All removed now and filed flat so that I can add an id number later like the first baneblade. PS the id number will be U028 the reason being I do not know the unique id of the tank so U for unknown and the guy I had got it from on ebay had the id 028 on the side so i will replace it when done as a mark of respect for the tanks past.

A shot of the other side. Note the large flat section on the hull will have spare track links on it once they arrive to cover up any minor damage from removing material crap.

Right guys. I hope you like it so far I await your input

Its simple. I had a pair of them from before the plastic one existed that were not up to my standard any more and I always wanted a full squad. And also the plastic baneblade looks like a bit of gak, I have 2 of them 1 in my chaos army and 1 in my space marine army but both are converted to look not so completely gak.

Right folks. It has begun.

Tonight I started repainting baneblade 3 (looks like baneblade 2 will be done last. TIME PARADOX)

Anyway as I cant start the main hull untill I have repaired the tracks I figured that I would do the turrets. So here is the main gun after it was reprimed painted black then the grey and white dry brushing added.

Its a start. Tomorrow I may do the full block grey sections and start the metal.

Right guys. Im not dead I just have not been very well and so have not been bloging. I have made some progress with U028 or Baneblade 3. Its mini turrets are done and I have don the grey and white of the main hull. I have also painted one of the tracks and given that track both of its coats of wash. Here are the progress pictures for you.

Of course you already knew that the main gun was done. This tank looks a little darker than the first one but that is because it has more big flat sections and I am pretty sure that once I have done all of the model it will be fine. Next to the first baneblade it fits right in

There's found gold in GW's plasticizing the Baneblade series model.

I've just about doubled my superheavy collection in the past year now 12 and counting. The GW styrene superheavy has dropped the bottom out of the resin superheavy market and diehards are reaping the benefits. I can't rebuild them as fast as I win bids on them. The last one a Lucius Baneblade I got for $80 bucks $96 including shipping. I just have to scratch build a new turret. The two missing my son has for refurbishing.

I'm following this thread with interest.

I've seen it as well but I'm more interested in rescuing poorly executed SuperHeavy's that were given as Xmas gifts to over-indulged rugrats who have no idea what is entailed in producing a well made resin model. Mummy and Daddy fork over big bucks to placate junior on the holiday and consider the money well spent because its an expensive gift and the hapless urchin can't complain because its what he asked for and it took a few minutes on line to complete a major portion of Xmas shopping; mission accomplished.

Come a few months later junior realizes he's in over his head (unlike a certain incumbent) as a resin model is so much more than glue part 12 to part 13. Then there's 300+ dollars gathering dust in a closet and let's dump it on ebay and cut our losses. Thats when its time to reap the benefits. You will note that all my models are only primed.

I will not commit to a paint scheme until I am ready to devote maximum attention to that endeavor.

Although I shall be hard pressed to auction twelve S.H.'s as a Heavy Tank Company.

While I wouldn't categorize tyros in modeling as "morons" they certainly didn't heed the caution from FW that the models in question are 'not for inexperienced modelers' of whom I like to pretend I am one. (Experienced modeler that is.)

Refurbishing these poor unfortunates has almost become a crusade with me.
