Hi. Many of you may of seen my imperial guard blog but for this particular thing I thought I would make a little thread hear.

Ive tryed to do a burn on the end of a destroyer tank hunters gun. I think it looks ok but want some feedback as if people like it I will add it to the main guns of all my leman russ.

Here are pics.

I like it a lot personally. I can't offer any advice on "improving" it or anything because I'm a right failure at painting, but I think you did a striking job.

I also have nothing to add except that it looks excellent.

Brilliant. I was hoping it would't just be like a generic black drybrush at the end of the barrel. That looks bang-on perfect. You've captured that burnt dark orange-y colour perfectly.

Absolutely fantastic! I love how it's not just the brown/black on the very end but also the discoloration due to the heat. Very well executed.

Maybe try some rust powders, or even some black powder pigments.

Thanks guy to all of you.

I have never used a powder before. Its something I could look into quite happily. Is there a particular one you advise and also dont you have to do a vanish over the top to keep them on because thats not going to happen as I like to leave my models open to being updated?

Ii use my airbrush with a black/brown tinted paint on my big guns and dry brush for my smaller ones like bolters and heavybolters and such.

With pigments yes you have to use a varnish, models can easily be changed after that. The best varnish is a mat varnish. forge world pigments are ok, but I just get mine form my local hobbie store. Pigments are basically chalk so any sort of pigment is fine!

I may well look into it. However I fear that if I like the powders I might go rust mental on my tanks.

Those are some great burn marks. Makes me want to go build a tank or something with a flamer just so I can try.

What's your technique on this? I have been struggling to get a similar effect on my models for a while now!

Thats a really nice effect. All heated-metally. My only comment would be for the destroyer to remember that its an energy weapon and then unlikely to be affected by sooty back-wash. The battlecannon muzzle is spot on.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Very impressive. I would do something like this on my models if you put together a tutorial or vid on how you got the effect.

Qucik summery is.

1 Dry brush with dwarf bronze quite heavy.

2 Dry brush with liche purple closer to the end of the gun again quite heavy.

3 Dry brush even close again with regal blue.

4 Dry brush again even closer to the edge chaos black but make sure this is total black no colour coming through.

5 Do 2 very heavy coats of badab black wash over the whole thing making sure the gold areas dont get any blotches. This blends the colours together and dimms it all down.

6 Lastly stipple dwarf bronze at the back of the burn effect where it meets the unburnt part of the gun. This is important because when you do the wash it will leave a stain line where the gold meets the rest of the gun. Stippling this area gets rid of that stain line look and blends it back into the rest of the gun.

I shall make a step by step guide to it but I cant really do it untill friday as I run the local warhammer club on a thursday night and work during the day. Might have time in the morning but its unlikely.

Properly happy that you all like it though.

I know what you mean about the destroyer. That thing would get bloody hot though and I am more concerned about it looking nice that totally correct if that makes sense.

Again guys thanks for the positive feedback it will motivate me to do more.

Looks great. Did you paint or use matches? I actually took a butane lighter to my orks for brun marks lol.

I do a simpler style.

Talorn Flesh on top of whatever metallic then Chaos Black over Scorched Brown. So far on small scale looks good.

Doing a tank this week will try ur method to see how it looks.

Hold that thought mate Ive just finished the step by step photo guid so here you go.

I have done this as photos of the finished one next to the one Im doin stage by stage so you can see it get closer to the end result.

Ok so here is the finished turret next to the one Im doing.

After dwarf bronze has been added

After liche purple

After regal blue

After chaos black

After first badab black wash

After second wash. Note the nasty wash stain at the back of the burn

After a little stipple of dwarf bronze to fix the stain. This is the finished result.

Hope this helps you guys. Let me know
