Post by: Ruglud
Awesome and awe-inspiring, absolutely wonderful tanks here. How did you do the camo netting?? Woo Hoo - post #100
40217
Post by: Ash 1
The camo netting is just pieces of medical gause, soaked in a mix of olive green paint, water and PVA. The paint colours the gause, the water makes it sag/hang with some weight and the PVA sets it hard. Once dry lightly dry brush with a light brown/sand tone - job done.
10972
Post by: Ruglud
Great idea, will have to get me some of that... What do you use for the strips in the netting?
15115
Post by: Brother SRM
I've never seen IG tanks look so much like historical kits before. Fantastic job painting these, I really love all the stowage. Adds a nice touch of realism. I'd love to see some infantry given the same treatment
40217
Post by: Ash 1
@ Ruglud : The strips are bits of tissue. I use three ply as for every cut you make, you get three pieces. Same technique to apply as the gause, just go with a lighter shade.
@ Brother SRM : It just so happens that I have a Grunts thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/351013.page
and another (just started) for terrain: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/351230.page

Post by: Ash 1
Thanks Ruglud.
I've bought a copy of that book and it's excellent. just a shame I'd made two of these before it was published, I might have done a better job with the decals!
That said Phil Stutcinskas, the chap who did a lots of the models in the Masterclass book was quite an inspiration as I'd seen loads of his work in 1/35 scale military modelling magazines - blokes a genius with a paintbrush.
Here's the pictures of the second one (made Autumn '08), the colours are a little different as I had trouble sourcing the Tamiya TS spray cans I'd used on the first and had to settle for different shades.
I actually prefer the colours on the second BB hence using the same colours on the Destroyer and the Vanquisher
I noticed after these pics were taken that I missed the purity seals on the back end, they have since been touched up.

Yeah, both Baneblades have turrets that are approx 30% bigger, here's a WIP pic from the first. Just a size comparison shot next to the standard top piece.
I bought a couple of resin conversion kits from an eBay seller, who scratch built and then cast up a limited number back in 2008 :

I hate people like you. Literally I'm pulling away from the hobby, as it's too expensive to justify at the moment, and what do you do? You come along, like Migsula, Shockwave or Scarper before you, and drag me back kicking and screaming.
I hope you're satisfied.
In seriousness, these tanks are actually some of the nicest I've seen. Earlier in the thread someone said they had the kind of realism you'd expect to see from the dioramas you get at war museums, and I gotta hand it to said person, they were definitely right. The rust, the chips, the grime... It's so realistic. I love how each vehicle has a story to go with it. Your most recent tank, a rebuilt destroyer is just such an example. A tank hunter has been ruined, but in order for the vehicle to continue service, they retro fitted it with a demolisher cannon. Even the heavy bolter on top has that rough and ready feel to it, kinda bolted on to give the tank a bit of extra 'umph.'
I'm also pretty jealous you have some of those sweet sweet old school necrons. They look just so awesome.

I hate me too . . . I keep stopping, sometimes half a year or more will go by, to the point that I forget how I've done things.
Trouble is I generally have several things on the go so there is always something left undone and that's what gets me going again.
I'm forever trying to finish, however once I start finishing things off I end up starting something new . . .
The one thing I have managed (with regard to cost) is I don't buy from GW stores anymore, not even impulse buys.
Majority is through eBay, ugly, badly constructed and painted tanks can be broken down and stripped.
Doesn't matter if they have damage or need a Dremmel to take to bits, I've not paid more than £10 for a LR for the last three I've bought.
I also don't feel the need to rush (possibly apathy) I pick up bits randomly and stick them in the bits box.
The Mars Alpha hull piece used on the Thunderer sat in a box for the best part of a year before I dug it out.
The Demolisher cannon came attahed to a Leman Russ that I bought to get the metal tank crew and sand bag bit used on the Destroyer.
Thanks for the comments on the tanks, much appreciated.
There is a plan for for doing a number of 2' x 4' boards, for which I'm collecting terrain pieces (see other thread), got most of the materials (minus the blue/pink foam, just where the hell does it come from?).
Re the Necron, like the old Necrons, again eBay couple of quid a pop. Easiest paint scheme ever, dry brushed metallics over black, then weathered!

@ AlfonsoTheTraitor: Thanks very much for the kind comment.
@ Ross74H : Nice of you to say so, but don't put your own painting down; I literally make most of it up as I go along. I do tend to do certain things in a sort of order, but that's just the personal preference I've acquired over time. I'm sure a lot of 'pro painters' would cringe!
@ Brushfire : Thank you kind Sir, I do like my IG . . .
@ Joshua Von Wolkestadt : Cheers; One of the main reasons that I like 40k is that there are so many areas to the hobby, from making to painting to playing or just collecting for the fun of it.
I enjoy all of it, be it hunting for parts, putting it all together then chucking paint at it; also those moments when I realise that I've not painted anything for half a year and get back into it.
Finished off these last two of Digit's BOARs (Command variants)

Whilst I am not a fan of the alternate style of vehicle, the quality of the painting and modelling is simply fantastic!

When weathering is done really well it is a balance of effect/color and not overdoing it. Every model here is a treat to look at, it's got that magic balance, and when that is in place each model exudes the environment, tells a little story. This is really cool stuff, thanks for posting awesome photos!

@ Crypto: Thanks very much for the kind feedback, much appreciated.
Here's the last of the pics:
This is the first 40k thing I've done this year, I've caught the 20mm modern bug, specifically post colonial bush wars which has kept me quite occupied.

Mother of Tanks! Your building skills are insanely good. Where do you get the little bits of scaffolding and stuff from?

Thanks for all the kind comments, much appreciated.
@ killykavekommando: The stuff on the turret is some etched brass 'bedspring' armour from a 1/72 scale T-34/85. It sort of fits this turret, so good to see it not go to waste.
The rest of that kit is here:

Ash, what scale is that LAV-R? It looks pretty appropriate, and I have been thinking about getting some regular models, and 40K-ing them up to look like IG vics. Thanks in advance.

@ Styrofoam: Thanks. Not got any more 40k tanks to do at the moment, but I'm working on a small collection of old Soviet kit in 20mm (1/72). see sig.
@ Firehead: the LAV-R is a 1/35 scale kit, I think it was by Trumpeter. Scale wise, I think the mine plow works quite well.

Don't suppose I could get a side by side of the LAV to a Chimera? I'm wanting to use Strykers for counts-as chimeras, and I'm wanting to see the size difference. Granted, I think strykers are slightly smaller than LAVs. I'm concerned 1/48th would be too small, since 1/35th seems to be a little too big for an infantry carrier. Thanks.

I love checking out these models, great work! Could you give any advice on how you've done the chipping on the edges of the vehicles, is it a layer of silver and then brown/black over that?

I tend to do chipping by painting on some black/brown to represent the oxodised metal. A thin line of sand coloured paint around the bottom of the chip, a thin line of black around the top, to give the felling of some sort of depth & then a very faint amount of dark metallic across any sharp edges. Rust streaking to taste . . .

Beautiful work. I especially like the dark gun barrels, they look very authentic.
