This arrived in the post this AM
Required the usual FW hot water treatment to straighten out the effects of warpage. Needed quite a bit of sanding to get the rear ramp working, then a couple of coats of primer.
Also got these to add to an ongoing Ad Mech unit:
and this for the IG:

Update: stuck the fuselage together - bloody thing has been slowly twisting again!
Added engines, landing gear, ramp and pilot, forgot to take pic of wings, but the panels with the numbers are now black.
Going to add a fair amount of exhaust soot.

Came out great, the weathering is real nice. Did you use weathering powders?

Post by: Ash 1
Cheers guys, I had to do a bit of a rebuild after the last coat of varnish as I dropped the bloody thing (luckily not to far and I semi caught it), but did knock the wing off one side and the whole wing/engine combo on the other side, plus one landing strutt! Due to the gap at the front I added a bit of plastic 'T' beam and a piece of plastic card to cover the gap at the back end.
@ TheChronoTrigger : I used a bit of MIG 'European dust' on the ramp and landing gear, plus some 'black soot' around the exhausts and behind the engines. Mmm . . . . grubby.

The demolisher cannon does look a tad out of place, but other than that its a pretty decent looking tank. I'd suggest replacing the cannon or altering it to look a bit more like the one that the Thunderer from Forgeworld (which I'm guessing you were going for with the look of the tank) has, or building up a gun shield about it to so as it isn't just jutting right out from the hull like it is at the moment. Has it got any lights so the driver can see during the night? =)

Post by: Ruglud
That's a great weathering effect, with the streaks going along the body, makes the whole model much more dynamic. Good to see a WIP as well, like how you use so many different elements on the model.

Only other possible gun I have is the stubby one from a Baneblade kit, but would need to build something for it to attach to . . . . .
I was thinking about possibly sticking a mine plow on the front end, I have a FW one but it's currently pinned to this;
I don't think I can get it off without wrecking the LAV.
I ended up putting a fair amount of extra armour plate at the front end to hide the hideous mess that was the front end.
As a result there is now no room for a dozer blade attachment, although it will make a change as just about everyone of my Guard tanks has a dozer attachment point.
Anyway had a play with some plasticard and made a fairly rough looking shield, which I intend to paint up a raw metal colour whilst the rest of the the tank is camo.
There will also be a fair ammount of cam-net to hide things, and I made up some head lights from bits from a 1/35 kit and some brass rod, will attach prior to primming.
Thanks for the suggestions

Not had much time to paint lately; bloody real life infringing on my hobby time!!!
Small update, got some paint on these blokes:
Going to do the eyes with a clear green to get a glowing effect - hopefully. The armour with some chips a scrapes, the red hoods with the old cog pattern and poss the skull masks on the respirators.

Cheers Scrazza. Real life has been slowing things down a bit, but managed to get these done:
One wounded pilot who will end up in some USAF tigerstripe kit, like the bloke on the left:
The other is the crew chief (love that head) who will be another excuse to try more MTP, like bloke on the right.
The other door gunner is the dead bloke (pair of Cadian boots, paperclip, Catachan arm and putty), think I'll change the gause for some PVA'd tissue or flat piece of GS.
The discarded helmet is part of the Valk piece. Also going to do a dead aircrew slumped in front seat.

@ Gerner: The bloke on the right was supposed to look a bit like USAF Tiger stripe
Sand coloured base coat, followed by a two tone blue pattern, leaving gaps with the base colour showing through. Came out looking more like Lizard pattern, but I like it.
Following a recent trip to Normandy and finding suitable plastic strut in a model shop, I messed around and made this:

Post by: Ash 1
@ Commander Cain: The transport vehicle was made by Digits @ Ammobunker. Got a fantastic IG thread called ' Drogan 22nd Voltigeurs' in the 'Warhammer 40,000 Project Logs' section. (tried to post a link, but can't get it to work at the mo). Great conversions, both grunts and vehicles.
@MajorTom: Cheers
@ Rouge Wolves: I'll have to engage brain for that one. I've done three batches of troops in this camo and each lot has come out a tad different
I based the painting on this:
Was more of a rough guide than a copy as the scale was a bit tricky.
All the paints I used were Vallejo.
The base layer was 'dark sand', shaded with a dark brown wash, then dry brushed with more 'dark sand.
The light brown splodges were 'English uniform' and the light green 'Russian uniform'.
Over the top of the light green was a smaller area of 'military green'.
The little squiggles were a mix of 'German cam. black brown' slightly lightened with 'buff' (there is probably a good ready mixed shade for this),
followed by little blobs of 'buff'.
Finally the whole thing was given a thin wash of olive green oil paint to pull it all together.
Apologies for re-posting the same pics.
If you try this pattern let me know, I'd love to see the results.

Commander Cain wrote:Great looking conversions as always, only today I was thinking of getting that FW tank commander and slapping some legs on him, only to see that you nabbed my idea...Darn you Ash!!!
Oops . . . This one was fairly simple, just chopped the legs from a set of tank crew legs. I've seen a couple where people have cut him at the waist, but I wanted to keep the armour plate and belt kit. Personally I don't think he has the right helmet for a tank commander, too infantry. Makes a good officer or regimental adviser.
I chopped a lot of legs for these guys. I had a load of Catachan legs, not my favorite, but I like the boots. Managed to make quite a few fit, so loads of this platoon have nice jungle boots

It's quite a cool kit as its snap together, so you can easily take it to bits for storage; also join a couple of kits together to make a longer bridge.

40217
Post by: Ash 1
Dug this out from storage, was originally painted for my Marines, can't even remember when (when did this kit come out?). Looking at this now I would say it's only half done.
Can't really get at the interior without taking the whole thing to bits so it will have to stay as is.
The rest will go Ad Mech; I'll strip off all the Fist symbols and external bits and replace with Cog stuff, weapons will stay as is, may add servitors . . .
Painting, thinking of verdigris bronze and lightly salt-mask chipped red. The brown should make a good base for the Red- hopefully.
Any suggestion appreciated

Ooh, would most certainly like to see an admech LR. Adding servitors sounds like a good plan, I would also be tempted to give it some extra bits like grabber claws and maybe spruce up the guns somewhat. Whatever you decide to go for, I am sure it will look great!

I'm not 100% in love with the Pred turret, however a mate is also doing an Ad Mech LR with the same turret (and I had the parts).
The turret weapon is supposed to be a Conversion Beamer, so it's ancient, revered tech that has been salvaged and (lovingly) refitted to a newer chassis.
Should look better with paint, I'm toying with the idea of painting the turret a different colour to look like it's from another tank . . . .

Mmm . . . the old Pegasus bridge . . . long time ago . . . hurting head to think back that far . . .
Looks like: Black primer; Tamiya TS-61 Nato Green or TS-2 Dark green; dry brush with what looks like a pale grey; paintchips - outlined some sort of yellowish colour poss Vallejo Japan Uniform; The dark area of the paint chips either a mix of black and dark brown or Vallejo German cam.black/brown.
The muddy bits of the bridge were sprinkled with sand whilst the primer was wet; once all the other stuff was painted a lot of brown earth tones were painted, brush shreddingly dry brushed; followed by a liberal dose of pigments - varnish to taste.
I have two tanks on the go; one actually made Ad Mech - which I'm going to have 'another' go at salt masking; the second will be IG, fairly knackered/crusty - same approach as other IG tanks, lots of paint chipping.
I'll do a load of WIP/PIP pictures of both.
In the mean time:

The muddy bits of the bridge were sprinkled with sand whilst the primer was wet; once all the other stuff was painted a lot of brown earth tones were painted, brush shreddingly dry brushed; followed by a liberal dose of pigments - varnish to taste.
The entire effect is paint? Wow. Thanks for posting that. I'll likely give that a try soon, different paints but will attempt to replicate process and hopefully get some results. And again, stunning work on the conversions.

Funnily enough a lot of the 'chipped paint' was due to missing a fair amount of mould lines, I camouflaged them with the chips.
The torso is from an old Citadel Hive ganger:

I've seen this blog in a number of places, but I've never actually posted to say that this Imperial Guard army is, by far, my absolute favorite. It is all quite impressive, and I will be watching for more updates in the future.

@ Skalk Bloodaxe : Glad you like them, other than a couple of Grunt helmets they are straight out of the blister. The minis are from the Incursion range from Grindhouse games, part of the whole weird WW2 stuff

@ Accolade : I used to be on Warseer (thread is still there and gets pictures chucked at it) then jumped over to The Ammobunker as soon as I found it:

Cheers for the feedback.
Size-wise is Ok'ish. They are a bit on the lanky side compared to a plastic IG, but as they all seem to be somewhat bent over/crouching it's not too bad.
The IG helmets made quite a difference. The poses all lean to the left a tad, which I feel could be rather annoying in a large group.

That's exactly what he is; stumpy little door gunner, was it the knee pads that gave him away?
Notice the slightly raised base - this chap is somewhat vertically challenged.
He has my favorite 'sense of humour failure' FW head; old skool Citadel arms with twin pack Marlboro pockets on the shoulders, Elysian bullpup Lasgun, Dremel'd out crew helmet and . . . that's it.

Just discovered this amazing blog - it's so inspiring! I love the individual and inventive units you create! It's a great example of making an army and not just a trop type to fill a role in the game. Your Arvus lighters have tonnes of character (people say they're useless in the actual game but that's missing the point I think) and your tank crew look hard as nails, a real "been on a long tour" vibe
Also, do you count this as a Basilisk? Because it kind of looks like a Medusa. In any case your work is amazing and I'm certainly subscribing to this!

Those sentinels are lovely. I wish my attic was packed with antique gold like that. It's just full of spiders.
40217
Post by: Ash 1
@ progreen10: The roof space had plenty of goodies. All the 1st edition Space Hulk stuff is in great condition; had all the tile from the main game plus both expansions, along with a second set of each that was bought from Games workshop way back when. All in the original boxes. A figure case with what looks like all the old metal Genestealer Hybrids and a shoe box full of plastic Genestealers (unpainted!) There were also spiders . . .
@ nightside: Thanks, glad like you it all. The grubby tank is a Medusa (or counts as anyway)
The gun came from Maxmini:

Thanks chaps, I'm rather chuffed that it's finished. It had been sitting half done for way too long.
Another lump of tank that has been languishing in a box is this ex-marine Landraider, repossessed, refitted and in the process of repainting for the Ad Mech.
First thoughts were do something that looked shiny and well cared for, however I don't seem to be able to make things look clean (adding muck is half the fun) so it will end up as beat-up Ad Mech. Sort of fits in with the Ramshakle games blokes who hopefully will get finished off as well:

Thanks for the kind comment, much appreciated.
I feel like I go at the speed of drying paint. The 'red lump' has been around for so long I can't remember when I got it! I do like painting IG stuff, after doing nothing for most of this year, then (like waiting for a bus [not something I do very often]) all this came along at the same time. I think I'll get the BOARs up to the same stage as the Baneblade before i carry on with it. Then I'm just using the same colours at the same time on all of it . . .

Slight change of plan with the AAA mount, apathy has kicked in with regard to building a chair/gunner combo, so now there will be a rather desperate looking IG bod at full stretch, blatting away and putting holes in the sky . . .
48594
Post by: dsteingass
Man Ash! You really have a good eye for where to highlight your paint chips to give them a peeling/3D effect. Just one side right? I always paint too much and ruin the look.
That AA platform with the rivets and treadplate..where is that from?
40217
Post by: Ash 1
I've tried a couple of ways to do chips that have produced quite realistic effects. 1) paint the shape of chip in a lighter colour (gives the effect of reveled undercoat) then paint in a brown/black mix (looks like oxidised steel plate) add metallic to taste. 2) paint in the chip/scrape with the black/brown, then paint a thin line of a lighter colour around the bottom half and a thin line of black around the top half.
The AAA mount is made up of Forge World quad stubber from a Sabre platform; base piece from an Imperial Bastion (had three legs that I removed, then added tread plate to cover the damage); the top plate is a piece of plasticard treadplate with another piece of plasticard on top to hold the gun mount, so it sort of still swivels . . .
48594
Post by: dsteingass
AHA! You add a thin line of black for shadow! I see! THanks man! The platform looks like a master I made and had Galorn make a mold for.

I will say that I'm getting ready to try the "chipped paint effect" process you shared with me quite a while back (regarding the Pegasus Hobbies bridge you showed).
That said, I always appreciate the work you share. You are an inspiration.

What's the name of the olive green and the sandy coloured paint you use? I really love those exact hues.

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated.
The colours are from the Tamiya TS range, TS-61 NATO green & TS-46 Light sand.
Whilst waiting for parts for the last BOAR, I've dug out my Chaos IG . . .

QUantum Gothic radar dish has finally arrived, no thanks to the postie who left it outside my front door in full view . . .
Idea shamelessly plagiarised from Digits
