I am a complete idiot who by some miracle knows how to do the most rudimentary things on a computer. If asked to adjust settings, manually set up a computer or basically do anything that isn't painfully simplistic, I usually resort to a tsunami or profanity and threats of violence. That's why I play with toy soldiers instead of video games.

I'm not the best at things tech... well mostly not... I've built maybe 2 or 3 comps but only one of them actually worked (I'm using it right now). I can generally maneuver through instructions and such and some common sense stuff. I'm not as good as my buddies who've built multiple systems and can name parts like they were common language.

Main reason is because of my Bacholar of Science - Computer Science degree that I hold and my job doing software.

I have built a computer from parts. I can design and produce a custom printed circuit board from scratch, off the circuit diagram (which often looks nothing like the physical circuit). I know which lead of an LED is which, what the resistor colour codes mean and where to use a 20 micro-farad capacitor. I know which end of a soldering iron is which, and how to use it. I can tinker with modern computers, work the cable box remote, tv remote and even turn them on manually. I have set up the wireless network in my house and am teaching myself C++. I learned MSBASIC in high school (along with Forth) and 68000 machine code.

My programming's awful, but hardware I can usually manage.
Comms-room wise, I could probably bodge my way to building a multi-site network and the servers and kit for that.
It won't be best practice, but it's do the job.
Command line for automation, if is looks like DOS.
As for gadgets, it'll take a while, but the basics would get done.
Mechanicals and electronics, that's not going to happen, despite the college training in it :(

I get by, over the years I've managed to learn things to do around my PC, like maintaining defrags, virus protection, running a non-admin account for everyday browsing etc.
I also play some PC games, so can install stuff. The more techinical it gets though, the more I tend to struggle. For example I have massive problems getting Ventrilo to work right as I have absolutely no idea what the whole set up stuff is. A friend online walked me through it last time.
I am happy to do searches for tech guides and such though. I've ben a Mod at three forums, so figured all the tech for that fairly well, but my run as a admin went a little more chaotic, as I really don't have a clue what a lot of the backend jargon is, although I have added forums and moved stuff around, so I sorta picked some of it up.
So taking all that into account I said option 3, I can get it done, and some stuff I'm good at, but I'm not at the tinker level.

Too much tech bugs the heck out of me. Okay, I love the internet for the info it provides, but I can't stand all the fancy Java & Flash stuff on some sites now. No, I'm not going to keep upgrading my computer.
And I'm not into fancy gadgets. Sure I have a mobile phone, a plain thirty quid one with pay as you go, I spend a tenner a year. I don't have sat nav, iPod, iPad or any of that. I prefer my old retro stuff. I play CDs through my 70's stereo and I don't want a car with a computer - I drive a 1975 Land Rover - Mech over Tech. Ramshackle, guess that's why I play Orks.

I'm nearly finished with a bachelors in Computer Science and have about 7 IT related certs, ranging from the easy (A+) to the unexpectedly difficult (Vista!). Despite that, I am reasonable skilled with technology. I've never bought a prebuilt PC (well, technically my laptop), and am right now deploying a 24 bay rackmount server running UnRaid; NAS is my personal interest having monkeyed with various Areca cards for the last few years.

I think "tinker" is the perfect way to describe it. I'm constantly fixing the microform readers and printers at work (one of my jobs is at a large university library), mostly just by fiddling with them. I don't know how half of the things I fix work, necessarily, but I seem to have a knack for spotting the general flow of function and fiddling until it works again.
On the computer end of things, I can do routine maintenance on my laptop, from basic defragging and virus scans up to wiping the hard drive and reinstalling to OS (with a bit of research, beforehand). I have vague plans of building a computer, but I lack the funds, currently, so I haven't delved too deeply into research, yet. Never done any programming (even basic HTML stuff) and I'm not really interested in it, but I'm more than capable of general computing tasks. Even did a touch of 2-D and 3-D CAD back in high school.

I tinker with my computer a fair amount 33% [ 185 ]
I am highly knowledgable in all things techy 28% [ 157 ]
I fall inbetween these two, especially since the word techy covers a lot of area, as far as computers i can hold my own, and have built my own, i can run programs backwards and forwards and if there's something wrong with the prog, I'll find it, but i can't program code for gak. on the flip side give me a prog for web design and some really good art progs, and I can build you one kick-ass website w/ mindblowing graphics. However, when it comes to vehicles, I'm like the blonde trying to describe what the car sounded like before it died - "gee, I don't know, it went clunka, clunka, thunk, thunk, sproing, and then stalled on me." - thank god i have a friend who is a mech engineer and knows cars, just last week, the fuel pump went out on my truck, i had several ideas of what might have happened, but had no idea that MY fuel pump was mechanical and therefore is located on the engine. If he had told me over the phone that it was the fuel pump, i'd have pulled the gas tank, like we had to do with my Ex's cavalier and then i'd have been wondering where the hell the pump was.

I provide Level 2 support for backoffice data transport software used for stock market trading. We use Redhat, Solaris and SLES (ugh). In my job, I've had to analyze network traffic, write scripts/programs/documentation for test cases and replication steps, and configure and maintain a server room, all with a cheery tone and bright smile on my face.
I know PHP, SQL, Perl, and C/C++, and I had a good run with 32-bit assembly, but I can figure damn near any language out given enough time and motivation. I trashed my old servers when I moved due to space constraints, but I used to have Slackware and Debian servers at home. I've set up wireless bridging between two access points to get wireless to all three floors of the apartment. I'm planning on installing Debian on my old Mac G4 when I get some time that I'm not painting or drinking. I've replaced blown capacitors in LCD monitors.
I have a schematic for a tesla coil I drew up that I plan on finally building now that I have a yard. I plan on using nothing but junk I've scavenged from one place or another. It'll use beer bottles for capacitors and two of those tray things that go in your stovetop under the wire things you put your pots on as a torroid.
You could say I know a thing about technology.

A lot of computer work is just round peg=round hole, square=square stuff. Or just looking through the menus to find the right option. Not as shrouded in mystery as the tech-preists would have you believe. Of course, most electronics do run on magic smoke. If you see it leaving the box, odds are, you are screwed...

I still use a dumb phone and have no idea how to operate a newer model, and I believe firmly in "durability over features" so my music player is pretty much a hunk of rubber with a place to plug your headphones in. I'm smart enough to keep a computer clean and running fast, but don't ask me to do much more than that. I'd call myself reasonably good at tweaking settings and such things as long as I have a set of directions (so I'm not scared of computers or anything) but most of my work is just editing some config files for games in notepad and stuff like that. It's all done by common sense and persistence, not actually knowing about the techniques. And I know absolutely 0 about the hardware side of things for computers. i actually used to keep up with which system components were best because I wanted to build a computer myself someday, but then I got busy for a year with school and when I came back everything had multiple cores (I stopped keeping up with it right before dual core processors became a thing) so I didn't bother to re-learn everything. I could probably figure it out, but I swear everything has gotten so much more complicated with 2 GPUs on one rack and all kinds of different connectors floating around... As far as mechanical/electrical devices that aren't computers I can bodge up there with the best of them. My dad restores old cars for a hobby (find a rusty old piece of junk in a ditch somewhere, pay the owner practically nothing to buy it, take it back to the garage and work on it for 6 months or so, sell it for 5x what you paid for it). I feel reasonably confident with any kind of car stuff that doesn't involve black computer boxes. i.e. everything on anything 70s and back, suspension and some engine components on everything ~2000 or earlier. I'd need a tech guy if I ever wanted to tune a newer engine though, and now they're even putting in computer controlled suspension so there goes that... I guess it comes from being an Idaho redneck because I can't do soldering or circuits either (although I could probably dredge up general physics 2 knowledge and calculate voltages around a circuit if you really wanted me to).

I'm pretty damn good with hardware electronics and that stuff, having designed a way to actually allow a monolith to float and move across the board.
I know a fair amount about computers, that is, where all the files are kept, what most of them do, and how to completely destroy a school laptop (well, beyond repair by anyone except a qualified techie) with a few key strokes.
I can read guitar amplifier schematics fairly well, and can identify major features (volume, gain, power amplifier, etc).
I understand all base systems (binary, trinary, etc.) so long as I know which one is being used, and I am learning ASCII hex code (for no reason), but I don't really understand any programming.

I am about as Tech-Savey as a TechMarine. I have some Electrical and some Electronic hands on experience. But for the most part, its basically minimal repairs and maintenance work that I can do. No real theory or design work from me.

I enjoy using computers, and most people who know me would ask me for help if they have an issue with their computers. As far as being knowledgeable about all things "techy" i would say that I'm not. I have a tablet (kindle fire), but i use it only for reading, and i don't keep up with the latest mainstream technology. I don't really like how people are starting to switch towards tablets rather than desktops (or laptops). I feel like the technology is interesting, but i would rather use a desktop. I can't work nearly as efficiently on a tablet as I can on my desktop with 2 monitors and mechanical keyboard.

I'm still in school but I've built 5 computers, done a gcse in electronics, I can use c++ fairly well and my cousin taught me how to completely wire a home security system so I'd say I'm fairly tech savvy

I likely have a alight advantage having grown up as they started teaching computer classes in schools, I'm still taking computer classes in high school now. I'm pretty understanding of stuff like programming mainly because I play a lot of video games and understand the logic behind them, but I can't actually write code for them yet. I can help with most other stuff on computers and can make upgrades to computers given a small amount of time searching how to. It's really not too hard.

I make computer games for a living. Nothing too complex, just casual web games, I do all the art, animation and programming.
I've just started breaking into more complex stuff, currently using the Haxe language so I can have my games work with flash/ html5/ android/ iOS/ whatever I want.
I'm not so good at hardware, although I can give it a shot via trial and error.
I fixed my last PC after it refused to turn on... took me three days to sort out, eventually got it working by prying off the motherboard battery with a screwdriver and replacing it to reset the BIOS.

I'm fairly proficient not brilliant by any stretch but I hate it. Ooooo I hate it. I like my little iPod which I use for dakka, the weather, the bbc news and window shopping on the lanes armoury site and that's about it...... But every now and again I lose an hour on Wikipedia or some random trail. But I suppose that's only pc's and apple gadgets I'm ranting about, when it comes to computers on my tractor, or controlling complicated air flow patterns in my stock houses I freeking love that techno wonder stuff!!

I've grown up around computers, had once since I was 13, back in the 80's (TRS-80 & Apple ][ ).
These day I build my own PCs and can hack together my own (limited) programs from VB (including VBscript), Access & SQL, as well as know a little C/C++ (enough to follow a program and make a simple one).
I work in an IT department managing Unix systems and writing SQL reports, but I'm also the group's generalist.

I'd say I'm pretty good at computers, I can code a little and made a few mods but that's it really
