I have a base knowledge of the tech that I buy just from reading the manuals and watching YouTube vids. Then I tend to explore options and such as I grow more comfortable with the basics. Computers I guess I would say that I am around the average type of user. Master of uploading and downloading and surfing. LOL

I build computers for myself as well as my friends and family, aside from that also got into overclocking and i set my career as a 3D Multimedia Artist, currently doing projects with aerospace.
Although honestly there's something incredibly satisfying about wargaming I can't get from PC gaming, while I play the occasional MMO ( just Guild Wars 2 now). Playing tabletop is very relaxing, although some people find it nerve wracking cause it can get competitive at times.

I'm only 2 months from getting my Master's in Computer Sciences so I can fix/diagnose most computer problems, code programs (including some very minor AI), and set up/maintain networks using CISCO switches/routers and Active Directory. I consider myself to be very knowledgeable of computers in a general sense but there are others who know much more (especially those on more focused degree paths).

I have a BA in Comp. Sci. and worked tech support of a small college for a number of years. I just finished assembling a new computer out of parts for a friend; I'm the go-to guy in my group for that sort of work. While not a god at all things techy (it's quite a large field) I'm pretty good.
A lot of computer work is just round peg=round hole, square=square stuff. Or just looking through the menus to find the right option. Not as shrouded in mystery as the tech-preists would have you believe. Of course, most electronics do run on magic smoke. If you see it leaving the box, odds are, you are screwed...
And remember: Never take crap from something with an off switch.

I can build/take apart/(usually) fix a PC, know my way around networks, etc, and, well, it depends on who I am with. Compared to internet geeks, I know little beyond the basics. Compared to normal people, and the 40-odd people work with, I'm a technology guru (and constantly fixing IT/tech problems/difficulties for people at work).

For an engineering major...I am pretty ignorant about electronic stuff. I still use a dumb phone and have no idea how to operate a newer model, and I believe firmly in "durability over features" so my music player is pretty much a hunk of rubber with a place to plug your headphones in. I'm smart enough to keep a computer clean and running fast, but don't ask me to do much more than that. I'd call myself reasonably good at tweaking settings and such things as long as I have a set of directions (so I'm not scared of computers or anything) but most of my work is just editing some config files for games in notepad and stuff like that. It's all done by common sense and persistence, not actually knowing about the techniques. And I know absolutely 0 about the hardware side of things for computers. i actually used to keep up with which system components were best because I wanted to build a computer myself someday, but then I got busy for a year with school and when I came back everything had multiple cores (I stopped keeping up with it right before dual core processors became a thing) so I didn't bother to re-learn everything. I could probably figure it out, but I swear everything has gotten so much more complicated with 2 GPUs on one rack and all kinds of different connectors floating around... As far as mechanical/electrical devices that aren't computers I can bodge up there with the best of them. My dad restores old cars for a hobby (find a rusty old piece of junk in a ditch somewhere, pay the owner practically nothing to buy it, take it back to the garage and work on it for 6 months or so, sell it for 5x what you paid for it). I feel reasonably confident with any kind of car stuff that doesn't involve black computer boxes. i.e. everything on anything 70s and back, suspension and some engine components on everything ~2000 or earlier. I'd need a tech guy if I ever wanted to tune a newer engine though, and now they're even putting in computer controlled suspension so there goes that... I guess it comes from being an Idaho redneck because I can't do soldering or circuits either (although I could probably dredge up general physics 2 knowledge and calculate voltages around a circuit if you really wanted me to).

I'm pretty damn good with hardware electronics and that stuff, having designed a way to actually allow a monolith to float and move across the board.
I know a fair amount about computers, that is, where all the files are kept, what most of them do, and how to completely destroy a school laptop (well, beyond repair by anyone except a qualified techie) with a few key strokes.
I can read guitar amplifier schematics fairly well, and can identify major features (volume, gain, power amplifier, etc).
I understand all base systems (binary, trinary, etc.) so long as I know which one is being used, and I am learning ASCII hex code (for no reason), but I don't really understand any programming.

I enjoy using computers, and most people who know me would ask me for help if they have an issue with their computers. As far as being knowledgeable about all things "techy" i would say that I'm not. I have a tablet (kindle fire), but i use it only for reading, and i don't keep up with the latest mainstream technology. I don't really like how people are starting to switch towards tablets rather than desktops (or laptops). I feel like the technology is interesting, but i would rather use a desktop. I can't work nearly as efficiently on a tablet as I can on my desktop with 2 monitors and mechanical keyboard.

I likely have a alight advantage having grown up as they started teaching computer classes in schools, I'm still taking computer classes in high school now. I'm pretty understanding of stuff like programming mainly because I play a lot of video games and understand the logic behind them, but I can't actually write code for them yet. I can help with most other stuff on computers and can make upgrades to computers given a small amount of time searching how to. It's really not too hard.

I make computer games for a living. Nothing too complex, just casual web games, I do all the art, animation and programming.
I've just started breaking into more complex stuff, currently using the Haxe language so I can have my games work with flash/ html5/ android/ iOS/ whatever I want.
I'm not so good at hardware, although I can give it a shot via trial and error.
I fixed my last PC after it refused to turn on... took me three days to sort out, eventually got it working by prying off the motherboard battery with a screwdriver and replacing it to reset the BIOS.
