I think "tinker" is the perfect way to describe it. I'm constantly fixing the microform readers and printers at work (one of my jobs is at a large university library), mostly just by fiddling with them. I don't know how half of the things I fix work, necessarily, but I seem to have a knack for spotting the general flow of function and fiddling until it works again.

On the computer end of things, I can do routine maintenance on my laptop, from basic defragging and virus scans up to wiping the hard drive and reinstalling to OS (with a bit of research, beforehand). I have vague plans of building a computer, but I lack the funds, currently, so I haven't delved too deeply into research, yet. Never done any programming (even basic HTML stuff) and I'm not really interested in it, but I'm more than capable of general computing tasks. Even did a touch of 2-D and 3-D CAD back in high school.

I'm a software engineer by day, so I'm pretty good on the software-side of things. I've got enough hardware knowledge to feel comfortable upgrading components of my own computers.

I put in other because my scope of technology is varied. I can build a computer, but when it comes to software... not so good. When it comes to Burglary Alarm, Fire Alarm and video surveilance systems, I am at the top, but that was my job for 9 years. Cell phones I can make do anything I want, and I do like to go into tech stored to drool. Radio shack is AWESOME!!! Buuuuut then again, most of my extra cash goes to Warhammer, so buying isn't so much of an option, LOL. So yeah, good with Technology, just dont ask me to fix your computer.

I have billions of men from millions of planets at my disposal. All hail the Emperor. He will be more forgiving than I.

I tinker with my computer a fair amount 33% [ 185 ]
I am highly knowledgable in all things techy 28% [ 157 ]

I fall inbetween these two, especially since the word techy covers a lot of area, as far as computers i can hold my own, and have built my own, i can run programs backwards and forwards and if there's something wrong with the prog, I'll find it, but i can't program code for gak. on the flip side give me a prog for web design and some really good art progs, and I can build you one kick-ass website w/ mindblowing graphics. However, when it comes to vehicles, I'm like the blonde trying to describe what the car sounded like before it died - "gee, I don't know, it went clunka, clunka, thunk, thunk, sproing, and then stalled on me." - thank god i have a friend who is a mech engineer and knows cars, just last week, the fuel pump went out on my truck, i had several ideas of what might have happened, but had no idea that MY fuel pump was mechanical and therefore is located on the engine. If he had told me over the phone that it was the fuel pump, i'd have pulled the gas tank, like we had to do with my Ex's cavalier and then i'd have been wondering where the hell the pump was.

fav movie quotes: "Well let's put her in charge man! - - "Step up to red alert." "Are you sure sir? It does mean changing the bulb." - - "The escape pods not an option, it escaped last Thursday."

I put the "tech" in Techmarine.

But in all seriousness I'm a computer technician by profession. Did 2 years of programming and now 6 years of hardware repair, networking, system maintenance and security.

I'm a double E Mathematics major with a special area in digital signals. I use to be a think tank analyst.

I know my way round hardware as well and am currently in the software industry which is less interesting but pays better than the satellite communications industry I was in before. I could draw a wiring diagram for a voltage converter from memory.

I think thats pretty techy.

But then, I don't have a phone with a data plan and just got on facebook. I dismiss most commonly thought of 'techy' gadgets and social networking as passing fancy and I am diametrically opposed to apple and everything they design and produce.

Drop me in UNIX or even DOS anytime!

Other I'd say; I find myself to be plenty capable with technology and definitely more so than the average person, however whilst capable of maintaining a computer software-wise, I have no clue when it comes to the inner workings etc.

Whilst I find myself 'good' with technology, I also find that most of it is just simple logic and common sense.

To add, my skill with computer software is above average. I can problem solve. But- my skill with phones, well you can give me a phone of any sort, and after an hour or two I can anything. Needless to say my android phone opens the main menu with a gesture.

Probably work

I provide Level 2 support for backoffice data transport software used for stock market trading. We use Redhat, Solaris and SLES (ugh). In my job, I've had to analyze network traffic, write scripts/programs/documentation for test cases and replication steps, and configure and maintain a server room, all with a cheery tone and bright smile on my face.

I know PHP, SQL, Perl, and C/C++, and I had a good run with 32-bit assembly, but I can figure damn near any language out given enough time and motivation. I trashed my old servers when I moved due to space constraints, but I used to have Slackware and Debian servers at home. I've set up wireless bridging between two access points to get wireless to all three floors of the apartment. I'm planning on installing Debian on my old Mac G4 when I get some time that I'm not painting or drinking. I've replaced blown capacitors in LCD monitors.

I have a schematic for a tesla coil I drew up that I plan on finally building now that I have a yard. I plan on using nothing but junk I've scavenged from one place or another. It'll use beer bottles for capacitors and two of those tray things that go in your stovetop under the wire things you put your pots on as a torroid.

You could say I know a thing about technology.
