Love of technology is not required to enjoy wargaming so I was wondering just what the crossover looks like. Obviously there is bias here since you are on a web browser, but I'm still interested in seeing the results.

I am a complete idiot who by some miracle knows how to do the most rudimentary things on a computer. If asked to adjust settings, manually set up a computer or basically do anything that isn't painfully simplistic, I usually resort to a tsunami or profanity and threats of violence. That's why I play with toy soldiers instead of video games.

I love playing around with new technology and have built a few computers from parts. I can't really go about fixing or creating any programming or real coding, but I can typically figure out what's going wrong.

I'm not the best at things tech... well mostly not... I've built maybe 2 or 3 comps but only one of them actually worked (I'm using it right now). I can generally maneuver through instructions and such and some common sense stuff. I'm not as good as my buddies who've built multiple systems and can name parts like they were common language.

I am not exactly sure on how to apply the grouping's descriptions to my actual abilities but I am going to be safe to assume that I can classify myself as "Highly knowledgeable in all things techy."

Main reason is because of my Bacholar of Science - Computer Science degree that I hold and my job doing software.

Useless, I'm falling behind on computers all the time. I'm ok with all the standard applications, but as for physically opening the computer to do something inside I really haven't got a clue.

I can barely operate a computer, as evidenced by my failed attempts to link or upload photo's to dakka and threads, i have since gotten no better at this, maybe i'm just too old to care?

I have built a computer from parts.

I can design and produce a custom printed circuit board from scratch, off the circuit diagram (which often looks nothing like the physical circuit).

I know which lead of an LED is which, what the resistor colour codes mean and where to use a 20 micro-farad capacitor.

I know which end of a soldering iron is which, and how to use it.

I can tinker with modern computers, work the cable box remote, tv remote and even turn them on manually.

I have set up the wireless network in my house and am teaching myself C++. I learned MSBASIC in high school (along with Forth) and 68000 machine code.

I can do anything that isn't command-line based I don't have any idea how important drivers are either, apparently.

But other than that, I can do just about everything. I think. I never have serious problems.

My programming's awful, but hardware I can usually manage.
Comms-room wise, I could probably bodge my way to building a multi-site network and the servers and kit for that.
It won't be best practice, but it's do the job.
Command line for automation, if is looks like DOS.

As for gadgets, it'll take a while, but the basics would get done.

Mechanicals and electronics, that's not going to happen, despite the college training in it :(

I get by, over the years I've managed to learn things to do around my PC, like maintaining defrags, virus protection, running a non-admin account for everyday browsing etc.

I also play some PC games, so can install stuff. The more techinical it gets though, the more I tend to struggle. For example I have massive problems getting Ventrilo to work right as I have absolutely no idea what the whole set up stuff is. A friend online walked me through it last time.

I am happy to do searches for tech guides and such though. I've ben a Mod at three forums, so figured all the tech for that fairly well, but my run as a admin went a little more chaotic, as I really don't have a clue what a lot of the backend jargon is, although I have added forums and moved stuff around, so I sorta picked some of it up.

So taking all that into account I said option 3, I can get it done, and some stuff I'm good at, but I'm not at the tinker level.

I'm a third year (almost fourth year) software engineering student at RIT....

I'm quite good with all things technical, and if I don't know something, I can almost always figure it out swiftly.

After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

Too much tech bugs the heck out of me. Okay, I love the internet for the info it provides, but I can't stand all the fancy Java & Flash stuff on some sites now. No, I'm not going to keep upgrading my computer.

And I'm not into fancy gadgets. Sure I have a mobile phone, a plain thirty quid one with pay as you go, I spend a tenner a year. I don't have sat nav, iPod, iPad or any of that. I prefer my old retro stuff. I play CDs through my 70's stereo and I don't want a car with a computer - I drive a 1975 Land Rover - Mech over Tech. Ramshackle, guess that's why I play Orks.

I'll say I'm pretty darn tech savy lol.

I'm not huge into programming anymore (gave that up when dos died) but the rest of it i'm great at.

I was a tinkerer in my youth and then moved into the the engineering world and became a tinkerer that has a working knowledge of theoretical physics, hydraulics, mechanics, eletrical, electronics etc etc lol.

All that did is reduce the rate of failure in my tinkering lol

I'm nearly finished with a bachelors in Computer Science and have about 7 IT related certs, ranging from the easy (A+) to the unexpectedly difficult (Vista!). Despite that, I am reasonable skilled with technology. I've never bought a prebuilt PC (well, technically my laptop), and am right now deploying a 24 bay rackmount server running UnRaid; NAS is my personal interest having monkeyed with various Areca cards for the last few years.

I have neither the affinity nor the interest for software. I know the basic web languages, can follow along with basic CLI type stuff but I prefer building and tweaking then coding.
