Okay gentlemen, we're roughly a month or so prior to the third Platinum Devil, so I'm getting the ball rolling, and messaging all prior attendees and getting names down. Starting a new topic though, since its neither News or Rumour anymore.
Platinum Devil has one spare place!
Platinum Devil 3 is taking place on May 7th and 8th in the Missing Link Building in the University of Kent in Canterbury (in Kent).
Registration fee is £6, to be sent to Necrofood@hotmail.com
If you could send me a PM here, or attach a message to your Paypal payment with your real name and username on Dakka, it would be appreciated.
All registration fees are used for the prize pot, which should be Forgeworld goodness once more. So if there's something of £35 or under that you think would look nice in your collection, and you're coming to PD3, chip in in this thread with what you'd like to see on the prize table.
There's also a commemoration pack available. As things stand, this includes ten Dakka Dice (custom dice with the 'Dakka Dakka' symbol for a 6), and a handmade Dakka Mug for £17. I may also be able to acquire some Dakka T-shirts for people to buy at the event for a couple of quid more, but as that's still up in the air, I'm not going to include them in the pack, and will sort them out on the day. If you're interested in one or more of these packs, send the payment to the same paypal account as the registration fee.
If you have a friend or two you want to bring along to join in the fun, feel free. I would prefer it if they register a Dakka account first though, even if they never post with it. Y'know, since this is a Dakka event after all.
You will be required to write out a 500 point list, a 1000 point list, a 1250 point list, and a 1500 point list for your force, all of which MUST belong to the same army/codex.
There will be seven games over the course of the weekend, and we'll all go out for a meal and drinks on the Sat night, as per usual. You don't need to send me an army list, this is a casual tournament, however, you will be expected to have one on hand to show to your opponent.
Saturday will involve two 1000 point games, followed by two 1250 point games. Sunday is a bit more relaxed with one less game, featuring a single 1000 point game, and two 1500 point games. A victory is worth 3 points, a draw two, a loss one. Most points wins. Nice and simple.
The two past Platinum Devil Winners were Panic and ArbitorIan, with their Grots and Daemons respectively. Panic should be in attendance on both days, with Arbitor scheduled to tag team it with Fifty, as Ian can't make the Saturday, and Fifty the Sunday.
A conveniently located nearby B&B:- http://www.thecityofcanterbury.co.uk/
Schedule:-
Saturday
10:00:- Registration, table assembly lay your armies out, and all that jazz.
10:-30:- 12:00 - Game 1 - 1000 points, Victory Points, Pitched Battle
Mission: Victory Points
Victory points to be calculated as per the instructions on p.108 of the main rulebook. Then compare the score to your opponents:-
If you have a total of more than 150 more than your opponent: Victory to you
If you have a total of less than 150 below your opponent, you lose.
If you and your opponents scores are within 150 points of each other, the game is a tie.
12:15:- 1:45 - Game 2 - 1000 points, Bombardment, Table Halves
Mission: Bombardment, Table Halves
There are three objectives placed on each table by the Judge. The winner must hold more objectives than his opponent, to tie on the number held is a draw, to have less is a loss. At the start of each players turn, they receive a single Artillery Bombardment for each objective held by their opponent, to be used at the start of their movement phase. Each Artillery Bombardment has the following profile:-
Range:- Unlimited Strength: 8 AP: 3 Type: Ordnance 1/Barrage
1:45-2:30 - Lunch!
2:30:- 4:15 - Game 3 - 1250 points, Assasination, Table Quarters
Mission: Assassination, Table Quarters
Counts as a standard Annihilation mission, except that HQ choices are worth 3 Kill points, and Elites and Heavy Support Choices 2 Kill Points
4:30- 6:15 - Game 4 - 1250 points, Seize Ground, Pitched Battle
Sunday
10:30 -registration, table setup, etc
11:00-12:30 Game 5 - 1000 points, Victory Points, Pitched Battle
12:45- 1:45 Game 6 - 1500 points, Attrition, Table Quarters
Mission: Attrition, Table Quarters
This is a kill points based mission. Only troops choices and their dedicated transports are worth kill points. HQ, Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support are not. If a troops choice is killed, it re-enters play at the start of the owning players next turn, as if it had become available from reserves. The player may choose to bring the unit on at any point along either of the table sides they initially used for deployment. (to clarify this now, in table quarters, you may only use half of each side of the table when deploying. However, when units are re-entering play, they may use the full length of that side of the table). All dedicated transports belonging to a troops choice automatically explode when they receive a 'wrecked' result on the vehicle damage chart.
If a unit is destroyed and their dedicated Transport is not, the unit must re-enter play on foot. If both the Dedicated Transport and unit are destroyed in the same turn, then the unit may re-enter embarked in the transport. Any destroyed Transports without a Troops choice ready to re-embark may not re-enter play however, until a unit requiring an identically equipped transport becomes available to re-enter play.
If you have a Webway portal or Trygon tunnel on the table, your troops may enter play through that instead (subject to the normal rules enforced on Trygon tunels and webway portals).
If the squad has a drop pod/mycetic spore, they may only re-enter play with it if the Pod/Spore is destroyed in the same turn. However, Drop Pods and Mycetic Spores do not re-enter play unless the squad that took them is also destroyed, and the squad opts to re-enter play using them.
If a squad has the Deep Strike special rule, they may use that instead to re-enter play.
If a Hades Drill emerges via deep strike, the hole it leaves behind counts as a table edge from that point onwards for the purpose of Engineer Squads or other Hades Breaching Drills. If a Hades Breaching Drill is destroyed, it must re-enter play in an identical way to a troops choice (so it may deep strike again, emerge from a hole already made, or come on from a table side). However, for the second time, it does not need an Engineer squad to be following it.
1: 45- 2:30 -Lunch!
2:30 - 4:30 - Game 7 - 1500 points, Portal, Table Halves
Mission: Portal, Table Halves
There are 4 beacons placed on the table by the judges(one in each quarter). Each counts as a holdable objective, and to win a player must control more beacons than his opponent(if they hold the same number, the game is a draw). As a holdable objective, a beacon is contested if there is an enemy unit within 3” of it. Only Troops options may claim objectives. Each beacon has the number 2,3,4, or 5 on the underside. If a model from a non-vehicle unit(except for walkers) moves into base contact with a Beacon, they may choose to activate it. Roll a D6 and apply the following effect:
1:-The unit is lost in the warp and removed from the game
2-5:-Place the unit in base contact with the beacon of the correct corresponding number. If you roll the number of the beacon you just activated, you may choose which beacon to emerge from.
6:-Deep strike the unit to anywhere on the table.
A unit may assault the turn it exits a portal, providing there is a target within range, but does not receive any assault bonuses (so no +1 attack, Furious charge is negated, etc). If a Portal is completely surrounded by models, so that there is no space for a newly teleported unit to be placed, then the surrounding squad must be moved the minimum necessary amount to accommodate the newly teleported squad having a minimum of 1 model placed in base contact with the portal, with the rest of the squad maintaining squad coherency.

As stated, Ian and I are planning a tag-team entry. Just got to get an army painted now...
(Also working on an Eldar terrain board. In the process of finishing five Eldar towers... Learnt my lessons on numero uno and reckon I can do a good and quick job on numbers two through five...

Fiddy - does his mean that you are literally sharing the same army or using the same force type differant minis?

Well, the original plan was to use the same army list represented by two different batches of models, but that involves a lot more painting...

..To be honest, if we're going to use the escalation rules like this again, then I'll probably drop out now. I don't think they work too well for some codices and work far too well for others IMO.
And some of the 500 point game match ups were effectively, won before dice were rolled in a few of the games, there was almost no way for certain builds to beat others, subject to totally outrageous dice.

Post by: Ketara
Did anyone else feel that way? I will of course, go with the majority opinion here, but since I had a few people coming up and telling me they liked that format, I thought I might as well keep it. If people want it changed this time though, that can be easily arranged.
299
Post by: Kilkrazy
I liked the escalation format though it is true that it favours some armies differently.
My Tervigon worked very well in 500 points because I could spawn lots of new troops. It didn't work so well in the scenario where both sides could bring back dead Troop units, and scored for killing Troops.
Tyranids are a difficult codex to escalate. In fact it was impossible under the original Combat Patrol concept last time. It isn't possible to make a Tyranid combat patrol that's any due to the restrictions on multi-wound models and so on.
I will be using Tyranids again. I probably wouldn't change the army around much if we use exactly the same format.
What about 750, 1000 and 1250 points? How would that work?

Honestly don't mind about the escalation rules, however, will FW armies be allowed again?
Have to decide whether to take my Elysians or Death Korps again....

Hi,
I am cool with the rules but last time there was perhaps a feeling of day two (by some people) being a little "too much" - An Apoc event was suggested for day two next time - (bearing in mind thiis is the final platinum devil) is an Apoc game a possibility?

I kind of liked the escalation rules, although they did favor some armies a little, and some games were decided as soon as the models went down. It was fun though...

Hi, Lovepug mentioned this to me... I'm in, not sold on escalation though but I'll see what I can make work!
I'll get paypal sorted in a mo, as for forgeworld suggestions... Anything Eldar a squad of shadow spectres or a warp hunter would do nicely
Edit... Money has been pay paled

Most people get flattened by two solid days of 40K. Especially with the weather like it was.
I've never played Apoc so I would be up for it as a change of pace. Maybe a chance/excuse to bring out the Tyranid units I can't use in the main event.
Would it be possible to run a competition of four games on the Saturday, and an all-comers Apoc game on the Sunday?

Post by: ChrisWWII
I'm with Kilkrazy on that one...a day of tournament followed by apoc sounds epic.

Post by: Ketara
One of the reasons everyone was flattened by the end of the weekend, was the fact the whole thing ran for a total of 8 games, as opposed to the 7 at the first.
This time around, I've reduced it back to 7, and bumped up the points agains lightly to ensure we're not done by lunchtime.
I'll strike the Escalation rules from the affair since people do seem to think there is an issue of balance. So now when constructing your force, you won't be obliged to use what you used in the smaller games.
Snarky, forgeworld is all good.
I'm not a fan of apocalypse for the second day it must be said, mainly because:-
a) It presupposes that either everyone will have a huge army, will be content taking small roles in big battles, or be happy to borrow stuff,
b) Not everyone has played Apocalypse before, owns the rulebook, or is familiar with the rules,
c) There would be a possibility of rankings not quite working out if there aren't very many games (so 3+ winners?),
d) I have no idea how you'd ally the various diverse factions for that one
e) You'd also have to have a fairly exact no. of players to make it work or you'd have people left out, or one side with less people than the other, which would be excaberated if,
e) people are unable to show up at the last minute due to whatever reason (for example, rinkydinks broken bones last time).
In other words, a lot of complexities that would make it really quite difficult to organise properly.
However, if people would like to play some bigger games with allies, it might be possible to turn the games on the second day into doubles....However, that would then fall prey to d & e above again....
Oh, and on a more cheerful note, I may end up taking a Masters here at Kent, in which case we may be good for another two PD's!

Good to see you Stu.....:-) - Camp round mine for the tournament lol
Ketara - as for the Apoc idea - I dont think it needs that much organisation to make it work to be honest mate....I played in a big apoc game today that was pretty hassle free.
Good guys v bad guys
x amount of points each - probably 2-3k of stuff
rules are easy - I dont feel they are that different from normal to be honest - you just seem to take models off the board quicker lol.
Obviously I am easy, but I think Apoc would make Sunday pretty special - give us an opportunity to break out the really funky stuff we dont use every day.
I am happy no matter whats decided...Apoc would be nice though lol
Perhaps you could do something like killkrazy says (reduce the total number of games) and then the top ranking players have a final we can all watch at the end of the day Saturday

As the tournament organiser, you wouldn't believe some of the hassle I've had before just trying to make sure everyone has an opponent every round. ><'
This whole Apocalypse thing kind of strikes me as an order of a magnitude worse.

I'm happy with the original arrangement - though this will be my first Platinum Devil and first escalation based arrangement. I'm happy to join an Apocalypse game - but it would be my first too!
At the end of the day though, I'm looking for as many great, complete, relaxed games against great opponents.
I trust Ketara to make it so

This whole Apocalypse thing kind of strikes me as an order of a magnitude worse.
I certainly wouldn't try to run an Apoc game series after the main series.
I imagined we would just divide into two teams, possibly based on eye colour, and make one huge table. I won't have much more than 2,000 points even with the extra stuff I'm going to make.
Anyone who gets blown up can come and play Death Angel in a corner with me.

I found the escalation thing rather fun last time, but it would not bother me if it was changed.
Kk's idea seems like a reasonable compromise to minimise codex scope imbalances.
Also as with escalation prior to the last PD, I've never played doubles before so would be happy to roll with that on the asumption that 2x players must = 2x fun (basic maffs that ).

Oh yes, i think i will come
Is it Painted stuff only? I don't mind either way, just i Only have Necrons fully painted at the moment, and don't really fancy them at 500 points, even if its only one game at 500 points.
Will sort out money later, or tomorrow.
P.s, i think keeping it the way it is will be fine, APOC is fun, but some people probably won't have a very good time with it, and it can be quite stressful running a game.
P.s.s Just sent payment

Post by: Ketara
Painted is preferred, and a lot of people do enjoy seeing and playing against fully done forces. That said, I do recognise that that might not always be strictly practical or feasible, so in keeping with the casual nature of the event, there's no compulsion to do so.

Post by: rodgers37
Ok thanks, i would rather play with pained stuff as well. But not too sure about using Necrons, as i haven't worked out how to win with them yet
I could probably get my Marines finished, all be it, not wonderfully done. Orks i would probably have no chance. (well i would if i had brought them back to Norwich with me for Easter Holidays...). Looking forward to it anyway

Probably won't be able to make it, cash is tight at the minute so coughing up the dosh for train tickets, a hotel food and 750 points of the most expensive models needed to complete my list is a tad more than I can afford without winning a couple of hundred

Post by: notprop
On the subject of hotels I would avoid the Victoria as the service sucked.

Post by: Fifty
I am not a huge fan of the escalation either, as I'll only be there on the Saturday, so I'll be playing lots of very very small games, but I'll still come if we are using that option. I'd prefer AT LEAST 750 points to begin with in the first two games though.
11029
Post by: Ketara
Hmmm...If there's time, I may knock it up to a 1000 points then.
7653
Post by: Corpsesarefun
The majority of the cost is in models to be honest
I have a maximum of 500 points assembled in any given army, all of which are troops.
16689
Post by: notprop
Sorry to push for a decision Ketara, but with the the increase to 1000pts would prehaps indicate an increase in the higher points games (2000pts?).
I'm not that bothered what we play or how big, if it means that more Dakkanauts want to attend, but if any of us (me!) need to get bigger forces then I wouldn't mind knowing ASAP. (sorry to pile on the pressure mate )
Last minute rush painting make notprop sad.

I'm going to be pushing to make 1500 let alone anything higher. Every intention to get a layer of paint on it all too - but over 1500 I think would guarantee not...
Still, earlier notice would be better than later...
11029
Post by: Ketara
Nah, the highest points cost won't go above 1500 points, don't worry about it.
I was just considering pushing the 500 pointer up to a 1000 points since it seemed a little unpopular.

On escalation, I think 750 is a better starting point than 500 also. Though since I'm taking horde orks, each step is just "moar boyz!".
I'm not a fan of apocolypse games but I'm easygoing about what we do over the weekend. It's my first tournament in over a year so I'm just excited to be attending!

hi All,

On the debates with game size, 500 does give some books an advantage and there are some really beardy things which can be done at that size, but given that it's only 1 game out of 7 i'm sure we can suck it up!
PS: I'm the stupid one who sent you an extra £2 because I didn't read the first post properly, just throw the extra in the prize pot!

Add the points value of whatever you have left on the table to the points value of what your opponents has lost. Add the two together. Then compare the score to your opponents:-
If you have a total of more than 150 more than your opponent: Victory to you
If you have a total of less than 150 below your opponent, you lose.
If you and your opponents scores are within 150 points of each other, the game is a tie.

Table Halves is indeed Dawn of War. And that is correct, at the start of your turn, you receive and use a number bombardments equal to the number of objectives the opposition hold. Similar to an orbital bombardment.

Glad you brought up the topic of accomodation I had completely forgottem to book anything! All done now though.
I suggest that attendees look into it ASAP, for those not in the know Canterbury attracts allot of tourists so hotels can fill up. So don't leave it to the last minute (like I did last time!).

Whats the deal with Forgeworld models? allowed or not, I've just ordered myself a Wraithseer from them! I don't know if I'll be using it for this but would be good to know what options I have
11029
Post by: Ketara
Generally speaking, Forgeworld lists are allowed, with the restriction being no super heavies and no flyers. If you want to use a specific unit out of one of the books for a standard army list, send me a link to the rules, and I'll either approve it straight off, or send you back a slightly modified entry to use (that's it its really broken basically).

All the things you've noted up there are fine Phil.
By 'flyers', I'm referring to the units which use the 'flyer' rules as outlined in Imperial Armour. So if its in a GW codex, you're okay.

Just to let everyone now know, since there seems to be variation on what is wanted, the prize for first place this time around will effectively be an IOU for £40, that I will redeem for them at any online modelling store, be it Forgeworld, Maxminis, or FOW.
What will happen is whoever wins will send me their details over Dakka after the event (that is to say, their address), and what they want, and I'll order it straight to their house.
There are lesser prizes for second and third however, as per last time.

Nine tables to be exact. Now I have enough terrain to cover three easily, or four at a stretch, Killkrazy usually brings enough for at least one and a half, and you sir, have just volunteered one tables worth. Panic/ArbitorIan/Brad brought enough for three tables last time, hopefully they can do the same this time around. If that's not an option, I'll sink some of the prize money into more terrain, and do my best to get it done up before the day.

KilKrazy: Tyranids
RinkyDink: Marines
Da Boss; Orks
Jonangon: Tau
Lovepug13: CSM
Arakasi: Orks
Rogers47; Necrons
StuH; Eldar

Just so there isn't any confusion or surprises, I'm bringing the drop troops guard variant list from IA8 instead of the regular guard codex.
11029
Post by: Ketara
So, to sum up, from what I'm expecting we have:
3 CSM
3 Guard (1 IA)
3 Orks
1 Tyranids
1 Dark Eldar
1 Eldar
1 Necrons
1 Tau
2 Marines
and then
1 Daemons/ Blood Angels
1 Marines/ CSM
That really is quite the mix! We're only missing Sisters of Battle and Space Wolves, and we'd have a full house!

It's getting close now and I’m certainly a bit excited about bumping into a few familiar Dakkanauts and meeting some new ones.
All I need to do now is complete that guard army (good guess snarky btw!) that I keep promising to finish painting!
Touching on something Ketara mentioned a while back the mugs for the commemorative pack are fresh out of the kiln, courtesy of Dakka's own weetyskemian44.
As you can see there are only 10 so if you are interested in laying your hands on one of these badboys (plus dice packs) then please let Ketara know.
Anyway that’s the GW-lite hard sell done, see you there!

First i leave my Necrons at home, then i don't wake up early enough to get my Dark Sphere order in on time to be sent out on same day, so despite ordering it last wednesday have to wait until Tuesday. No Plague Marines at GW. My lists are rubbish and now i have somehow lost a Dreadnought foot.... Plus needing to get a 1500 point army painted (I don't want to be the only one there without a painted/mostly painted army). I'm still quite happy to go, but seriously if anyone wants to go in my place i'm fine with that.

Don't sweat it. This is a very casual affair. Its not a big competitive environment, so having a fine tuned tournie list is not a must (heck, I don't think most people who come to this even play in tournaments), and as for being painted, again, its no worry. I may not even have mine finished!

If you boot up this, and look at the yellow E5 tag in the top right corner, you'll note a small separate unlabelled building to the immediate right of it. That's where we are.

.. kids today eh !
Which, if it's open, is fine with me. My only concern here is that might actually be a wee bit early/too soon for some players, whi might well want to hit their B & B/whatever before noshing.
So I think the "plan" is to play it by ear and see what people want to do.

I'm discovering that it's REAAAALLLY hard to do a Tau army this way... All my units tend to come in at 170pts... :/ In fact, I notice on the front page that there is no escalation rule listed! Gentleman! Important!
You will not believe this. I have been ill the last few days, hoped it was a 24 hour thing. It appears, according to the doctor today, that I have a nasty form of Gastric Flu.. Recovery time ETA: 1 week.
My bank account was also plundered by some adventurous chap it turns out when my wallet went missing last week.
My dissertation is now unfinished and due on Tuesday. And I am not capable of exerting much energy, due to being just ever so slightly sick.
So! The show will go on as planned! But the result may be if it all gets too much, I may end up going home, and leaving Red to keep a keen eye on things. I trust that's okay with you Red?
Due to my bank account situation, notprop, I shall have to send you a bank transfer with the appropriate munies on Monday when my next grant comes in, for the two Dakka mugs sold, my own, and the trophy. I've been transferred a little money by my parents to tide me over on food and drugs and such, but not enough to pay you back on the day and survive.
Due to my illness I will definitely not be drinking, and possibly not be eating either. I've eaten very little the last few days, and that trend is likely to continue. I'm doing my best to recover ASAP, but we shall see.
Killkrazy, do you think you could stop outside my house on the morning again? Pick up me and the terrain box? I'm easily fatigued at the moment, and I'd have difficulty carrying my model boxes right now, let alone the big ol' terrain one.
Red, it means nothing to the rest of them, but the other seminar room I booked was no. 10. The exam boards decided they wanted the rooms at the last second, and they've booted all societies out of Missing Link until after exam time. Thankfully, I got the Masters Assistant to fight the corner on our behalf, and we still have it.

Of course I'll pick you up. PM me your mobile phone number and a reminder of the address with postcode.

I'm heading into uni tomorrow to see what can be done with regards to the dissertation, but to be frank, from the time I've spent sick already (3 days now), I'm not sure I have any chance of finishing my dissertation, wargaming weekend or no. If I'm feeling fitter in the weekend, I may be able to some work in the library in the evening, or so I'm hoping.
At the moment, I'm just playing it by ear with regards to my health, as that's basically going to dictate my actions.

I can cover four tables at a pinch as said before, and I know a few of the other chaps are bringing stuff. So we should have no problem with regards to covering the tables I would think.

Or indeed gaffer tape if this was preferable?
I'm on a building site at the mo so can raid the stores for most stuff, so let me know by 1.30PM and I can pick it up if we have it.
One massive bag of coarse sand? We'll just throw it over all the planks of wood, the floor, the seats, everything. It'll look amazing with Killkrazy's Tau stuff, and I'll bring my bucket and spade and make a sandcastle terrain set.

I just nailed 11 hours sleep, which felt pretty good. I'm going to try and do a little model assembly, and dissertation writing today.
Bar having a very sensitive stomach at the moment, and some slight joint pain (which I can alleviate quite well with painkillers), my main problem is that I'm quite easily fatigued if I exert myself physically. If I just take it easy, I'm pretty good, my mind works fine.
I'm actually hoping right now, if I work hard enough, to actually finish my dissertation on time , and attend the wargaming weekend. It'll be a challenge, and it might increase the period I'm ill for by a few days, but I'd be willing to accept that tradeoff.
I'd also like to thank you Gentlemen for all stepping up and helping make this tournament what it is, and demonstrating just precisely why this is a Dakka Community Event! Not many other tournies could have the TO not capable of doing it and still work just as fine regardless!

Unless they get here for 8am saturday morning they I guess I will be posting them out or refunding those that have paid. Fingers crossed, but no time to worry painting to do and I have to work out how to get a 1 Ton bag of sand in the car for Ian.

Guys, I'm really sorry to say, I won't be able to attend. I feel horrible for backing out at the last second, but I have just had a very serious job related emergency, and my job is sort of on the line until it is dealt with. I can't afford the time off for the tournament at all.
That, and I'm ill (like, need the doctor ill). If it was one or 'tother I might have tried to make it, but I am going to have to concede defeat.
I am gutted, because I have been having a rubbish time of it lately and would have absolutely loved to have come along and played a few games with you guys.

Great shots fellas. So sorry for not making it - I would've loved to come again this year, but stuck between job changes, friends moving to bloody japan and an overall lack of free time, it just wasn't for me this year.

was a good laugh for me, using a no heavy support imperial guard army was funny, might do it out of choice next time.

Great pics from Jonagon!
Having played and lost to Battlecannon it phil's "no heavy support" army, I claim that it wasn't funny at all!!!
Even though it is a nice looking army.
