Hello Dakka folks! Here is a random WIP thread other then my Dark Angels .
I have a commission for a customer who saw my Huron and ask to purchase him along with a 10 man squad. So since this my first commission I decided to post the progress on it.
My DA is taking a back seat for now and will start on the Red Corsairs.
I meant to post this sooner but hey looking for a new job this was sorta secondary.
So here nuff blabbing here it is.
Ok guys a quick update. I am 70% done with my test model and added some gold to the black and red theme. Not to much gold to get confused with khorne heads ! Also stuck with the story with the Wolf of Fenris. ( check his trophy rack )
I got some touch up and basing to do and also started on the second model.
Let me know what you guys think.
I love how you've done the flesh on that last one.
Thank you Mister Feral I am trying to get a really pale look to these guys, kinda like Darth Vader when he removed his helmet.
Popsicle wrote:Very solid, clean painting.
What airbrush and compressor do you use?
Edit: Gold and silver could use a wash of Devlan Mud. I assume you're planning something like that.
Popsicle thanks, as for the air brush it is a Badger model 360/universal. It is a syphon and gravity feed model. The front side turns so you can feed a bottle or turn it for gravity. As a compressor it is a generic model with out a tank but does the job I need. I also have a chinese knock off airbrush I bee n using since my automotive days you can purchase this at http://www.tcpglobal.com/ the chinese knock offs are copied from Iwata and does the job for us modelers.
As for washing the metallics yea will have to tone it down a bit !
winnertakesall wrote:Very nice red corsairs, very clean and 'armour' looking.
winnertakeall thanks brother I try. My friends already calling me a heretic for painting them
Heretic!!! Here I'll give your your first Chaos icon The dark ones gaze upon your work and whisper your name in the warp. Perhaps they will ask you for commissions?
fasteddiexx1 wrote: Heretic!!! Here I'll give your your first Chaos icon The dark ones gaze upon your work and whisper your name in the warp. Perhaps they will ask you for commissions?
Heretic nooooo! In order to know your enemy you must paint your enemy!
HAZZER wrote:These are really well painted chaos dudes!I think its a good break from dark angles! Also basecoat is 1 word.
Thanks HAZZER. I thought we were in art class and not grammer class but I will remember that basecoat is one word .

True soz ,people have had a go at me in the past about grammer and spellling*so I can't really say much.*(people like chrisWWII runed my titain thred by saying this is bad this is bad bla bla bla)Also rember for the emperor not death to the false emperor! Also what is all of this 40k nation stuff?
@Deamon Eater thanks, but my customer wants it simple and not to complex like adding different marine helmets who turned traitor. I just added a trophy to a marine if seen it .
Well guys kinda of a slow start on this commission but will start to hustle tonight and this weekend.
Ok for the update I did Huron's final highlight and details on his head and worked on his base. I will need to finish up details like the gem on his torso and some highlights.
I completed the second marine and finished the base on it I am now working on the third CSM and he should be easy since he does not have that much fluff.
Well enjoy all and let me know what you guys and gals think.
Hey you know that guy horon was he a space marine captain before becoming a choas dude?Because he ha a iron halo an onlt either space marine captians or chaptermasters get them like this guy he does kind of remind me of him!
HAZZER wrote:Hey you know that guy horon was he a space marine captain before becoming a choas dude?Because he ha a iron halo an onlt either space marine captians or chaptermasters get them like this guy he does kind of remind me of him!
HAZZER yup he was the chapter master of the Astral Claws. If you wanna see what he looked like head to Forge World and you will see him before he turned to the darkside. Also before he took a blast to his noggin from a melta.
LOL... awesome. Just took a look at the FW Huron... damn. He got really ugly!
I like the shade you got from the black primer/red VA color. My FLGS carries a limited supply of air colors... these guys a commission- how many more to do?

Either way, keep it up!
Thanks yea a melta will do that to anybody . I have a ten man squad plus Huron and we will see if he wants more. He also saw my Predator and is considering me to do one.
moonshine wrote:Good stuff, very good stuff. Keep it up
Thanks moonshine will try .
Ok guys sorry have not updated in a while and with my big 40th B-day and got some nice toys I been pre occupied with my new/used 05 Mustang GT I gotta do some catch up with my commission.
So here is my update, I got my 3rd and 4th Corsairs done gotta do some details on Hurons trophy belt and pictures of my new toys .
Great red, and I definitely know what a bitch it is to paint over black sometimes. Guess that airbrush is a must for me sometimes soon. And congratulations on your new car, I hope you'll be able to enjoy it without bumping into too many traffic jams.
fasteddiexx1 wrote:Hmmmm Hersey drives a nice car, so who says being a pirate heretic never pays well
Yes life of a pirate raiding hopeless imperial ships and outposts does bare its gifts sometimes
Marcin Ciszewicz wrote:Great red, and I definitely know what a bitch it is to paint over black sometimes. Guess that airbrush is a must for me sometimes soon. And congratulations on your new car, I hope you'll be able to enjoy it without bumping into too many traffic jams.
Marcin thanks yup for red, yellow and white can be difficult to apply. A airbrush is a must and will save tons of time and headaches. And priming with black I did not want the red to be too bright since red is almost transparent this helped keep a dark tone to it.
As for traffic jams in Northern California its not to bad
Mister Feral wrote:Wow, these are the best Red Corsairs I've ever seen!
A question, how did you do the bases? (in particular, Huron's and the colours used)
Thanks mister feral. I appreciate the positive compliment as for the bases its just basic GW basing kit rocks and regular sand and Huron is Microart Studios 40mm chaos round base. I primed it black with Vallejo Model black dry brushed the rocks with Vallejo Game Colour Cold Gray then used Vallejo pigments applied over the sand. See the picture below.
Sweet! (both for the GKs and the new ride) Is it coincidental your callsign is Grey Death and your car happens to be a shade of grey with custom rims? , er... I mean, a Reaver-class attack ship with custom stealth unit/deflectors?
HF Izanagi wrote:Sweet! (both for the GKs and the new ride) Is it coincidental your callsign is Grey Death and your car happens to be a shade of grey with custom rims? , er... I mean, a Reaver-class attack ship with custom stealth unit/deflectors?
ROFL
Mister Feral wrote:Haha I might of ordered some of that Burnt Sienna pigment because I really really like the colour of your bases!
Any tips on how to use it successfully? (I've never used the stuff before)
Mister Feral well there are many ways to use pigments. The method I used was applying water or alcohol on the base first on the areas you want to apply the pigment to get a real dry loose earth look. When I want a dried mud look with some hardened protection so it can be handled like on a vehicle I use matte varnish with water to make a paste and then apply it to the model. It will dry like real mud. If you want a wet look use gloss varnish or clear floor wax. Yes floor wax we here in the states use Mop and Glow I don't know what they call it in the UK. Go to YouTube and search sleepylafiel and blacksun studios this is the only 2 channel that has a good video.
Pastels you can use and have tons of colors for half the cost of pigments the downside you need to ground it down to a powder form. Whew that's alot of typing on my phone. Hope this helps.
@HAZZER -Yup Loved Grey Knights since they introduced them in White Dwarf back in the 80's!
But was disappointed when they where more like side kicks to the Inquisition in earlier editions.
Ok it has been slow for me and now getting back in the groove. I have completed half of the squad and Huron and working on two more Corsairs which leaves me three left.
So here is my update let me know what you guys think. Remember my customer wanted these guys a bit dark and worn out like their leader.
Lookin' good- I think the color and quality are consistent with Blackheart! Or does the customer want battlewear on the cohorts' armor? To match the battlewear on their leader's face?
Either way, I'm sure you'll deliver. For some odd reason, if I was to be the one asking- I'd take them as-is. I like bashed up and worn SMs, but these guys look good without the damage.. keep 'em coming!
HAZZER wrote:Wow you have got some work done!Nice job lol!!!!
HAZZER Thanks and yea had to get busy but also was slowed down with the job hunt still.

HF Izanagi thanks alot Yea he just wanted it basic 2 color for the tactical squad and well as for Huron he had more time spent on him then any one tactical marine . Well my customer has been non responsive for 2 weeks now and thats showing me some concern if he was sucked up in some warp portal he has already paid for the tactical marines box set but not for the paint job.
Hopefully he has ran out on me well if he has I will just sell him at one of the 2 stores I dwell at !!!
Well I should be done with the squad soon and will post it up this weekend (hopefully)
Wow, I missed a few things while I was gone! I need to sub this thread.
Great work! Not that I'd expect anything less, mind you. It's inspiring to see you working on Red Corsairs. True freedom fighters standing against the oppressive tyranny of the Imperium!

Skalk man it's good to see you again!! Good looking Nurgle troops and renegades you got going.
Yea since I posted my Huron someone locally wanted to buy him plus 10 guys.
Yea I get my balls busted by Fasteddiexx1 that I turned traitor . Oh well anything to fund my other armies !
Ok dakka guys and gals I completed the Red Corsairs and waiting for my customer to get back to me.
So I printed out decals for the shoulder pads and man I need a new printer but they turned out good. So take a look and let me know what you guys think.
Raen wrote:love your paintng! one question though... which airbrush do you have
Raen thanks for tuning in! My airbrush is a Badger model 360 aka Universal. Its a gravity and siphon fed model. The front part twists 360 to take a bottle or use the small cup for gravity feed.
This model is perfect for what we do and I don't waste paint with a big cup.I used this in My automotive repair days for touch ups and small jobs. I also have a Master series G23 a Iwata knock off. And a damn good one too.
Let me know if you have any questions on airbrush's.
And how did you paint the coils on the champion's plasma pistol? It (along with everything) looks great.
prime12357 thanks for tuning in and yes Legends is cool!! As for the plasma coils I paint white with Vallejo game colour white primer then wash it with Vallejo Model color Park green. You can wash it with any color like blue ect. Then highlight it with white using what ever technique ie dry brushing.
BTW are you in the Cupertino area?
Top stuff - just read Blood Reaver, makes me want to pick up a Huron model. I'd love for it to look as good as this one!
Gotta question for you GDO, on the bases. Im liking the Red Mars Desert look, as it matches the red of the models really well. they look 'dusty' so i assume that this is a weathering powder? If so, how do you get it to stay on? your bases look like a reasonably thick layer.
I have been playing with weathering powders fo a little while now, and love the effect, but if I dont matt seal the model, you end up with smudges/fingerprints and the powder eventually rubs off.
The issue with this is that the sealing process adjusts (knocks back) the colour somewhat - This is a link to my blog that shows what I mean (about half way down the page)http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/60/244402.page#2786602

Be interested in how you manage this issue.
Cheers & top work
darkkt thanks I am glad you like it. My customer wanted the cost down so just two colors and washing it down ( no respecting CSM looks clean and new like GW makes them ) so it's not bright looking like they never fought a battle in their long life span !
As for the bases for the pigments yes I use the Vallejo pigments and the tecnique I use is using a 1:1 ratio ish of water and matte varnish and apply it to the base area's where you want the pigments and apply the pigment to the wet area's. The pigments will stick to the wet area and you will get a muddy effect first but will dry looking like any earthy place.
If you want a wet muddy effect that still looks wet use gloss varnish and mix it on a pallet and apply to areas make sure you use quite a bit of gloss varnish or use floor wax like Mop N Glow ( I don't know if you have that down under) this is a old scale modeler tecnique I learned from the japanese book called Hobby Japan, but that was a while ago and don't know if they still print it.
I know regarding the the pigments lightening up if you apply matte varnish on top if it and learned that mistake too so what I do is mix the pigments a shade or two darker( and messy) then apply then coat it. And will not lighten it up as bad.
but using a wet tecnique is better then just dry cause dry will just be all over the place, your hands, your bag everywhere .
Also it will harden up and won't get everywhere using that mix I mentioned.
I know it can get very expensive down under, another cheap way to do pigments is pastels you get from a art store. The japanese been using it for years plus you get every color in the rainbow for under $20. The pastels are like soft chalk and have the same texture as pigments once you grind it down using a small screen strainer ( look in your moms kitchen ) or course sand paper.
Wow sorry for the long rant I will try to see if Youtube has any of the Japanese Armour video and post the link.
Wow Youtube is great they even posted old VHS and DVD's of the Japanese Armour vids. Here is the link for all who wants the budget pigments and trust me it does work exactly as pigments (messy but works).
Hello dakka friends I want to show you my Finecast purchase and give a quick review.
I purchased two Grey Knight models, Castillian Crowe and Kaldor Draigo.
Ok initially when I purchased the model I examined each one carefully to make sure I bought a non flawed model with bubbles and other defects. I recommend doing this with all blister packs but for the box set I highly recommend opening it at the store and you can do a quick return if there is any defects. Just remember dealing with resin you might run into flaws especially bubbles. Many of you who purchased Forgeworld products might have run into this or heard of nightmare stories of warped pieces. Some of this can be fixable by fillers or soaking it in warm water to straightened warped pieces. Then the dreaded part where you have to ship it back at your dime. ( note to GW *better QC before shipping*)
Ok nuff talk and more model review. . After opening the blister packs, I gotta give it to GW for making a great product. The detail is what they said it will be and was very impressed. Crowe and Draigo looked amazing. Even fasteddiexx1 who bought the Sternguard box set looked better then my metal ones. Now I believe for this new batch of Finecast will be somewhat flawless but maybe down the road you might see some defects more common.
That is why I recommend examining every model when you can. FW use to have a good QC of their products but lately I have heard some bad stories especially with their high end models of titans and Thunderhawks.
So anywho I rate this release a 9.5 out of 10. Why 9.5, well after getting shafted with a price increase for a cheaper material that is why.
Now I understand we are the crackheads and they are he crack dealers but man common how is any kid getting into this great hobby to afford this hobby?!? Oh well that will be another story. Here are some pictures and enjoy and comment your thoughts.
Alright dakka peeps, I needed a break of the 40k kind of painting and needed a single model that will apply all that I learned from Massive Voodoo and spend some quality time with blending and lighting.
Fasteddiexx1 picked me up Enigma's Old Death figure since it was always sold out quickly everywhere and I got one Whooohoooo!
Well I started it and primed it with Vallejo black primer which is the best by far and applied it with my airbrush then worked out the light source then highlighted the wings using Vallejo air white and gray.
I then gloss varnish the wings and ready for washing.
Let me know what you guys think.
Those are some of the best Red Corsairs I've seen in a long time. I also have to agree with Grey Knights and the "homer simpson" gurgle that ensues when I see them. I've always LOVED Grey Knights since way back when, then the Daemonhunters book came out and I never got a chance to get an army together :(
Those are some nice looking fine cast models. I got crowe in metal and will probably make draigo my first fine cast purchase soon. Hopefully it'll be somewhat decent.
Also the Enigma mini looks awesome. It's always nice to take a break from GW and paint something else. Looking forward to seeing you paint it up.
Hey guys thanks again I am glad you guys like my work I am trying to improve as time goes and now trying to do alot of detail and time on Old Death here.
I am overall impressed with the model but wish some of the casting was cleaner. The back of the wings had some flaws and the head was not as detailed as I would like it. But it is still a beautiful sculpture and reminds me of GW when they did various models that really did not belong to one faction of the game.
I believe they lost that and only do it on Games day exclusive models or order 2 years subscription of WD and get some dumb Ultra Marine captain sorry had to poke fun at them.
Anyways here is a small update and now have to blend the cape and detail and highlight everything.
Let me know what you guys think.
Greydeathone, you are awesome....as if you didn't know already! love the mini's and that reaper is fantastic, I love the light sourcing it's a way i've never ventured into for proper painting yet but I use the method on my marines and then a series of washes, it's a quick and good method but I must try and do something properly again soon! you have inspired me with your work, thank you!
HAZZER wrote:Sweet! That is one lush crim reaper guy!Lol!
thanks HAZZER
dark6spectre wrote:I don't like it.
It scares me. only joking, looks fantabulous, the detail is immense! would you recommend these finecast models then over the metal's?
No not so scary he is cute as a fluffy bunny. The finecast will have more details due to the resin has less resistance to the mold as for liquified metal where it will not set in the mold fast enough to grab the details on the mold due to it cooling before it sets.
So yes and no metal has a nice feel due to the weight but cleaning mold lines and bad casting can be a big negative. As for plastic and resin the details are better and cleaning mold lines and fixing bad molds are easy. But as we all know that lightness of the model makes it easy to haul around and not prone to fatal damages once dropped but it just feels well cheap cause there is no weight to them.
So mostly yes due to the quality and detail and ease of building them. But man I miss the weight

Nerdfest09 thanks my brother I am glad that you are inspired by my painting as I am of yours. But that is what this community here does. Please check out Massive Voodoo site where I been learning my newly learned techniques and still a student of Raff's style.
Well basically I gotta thank those people who helped me out when I got back in the hobby.
Les Bursley, grey_death, Raff, and orcpainternerd. Their websites really helped me out and hope to help you.
Ok small update. Like I mentioned on my Dark Angels thread I got a commission for fasteddiexx1's army since he bought the finecast box set of Calgar and his goons I twisted his arm and got to paint the most hated smurf on the eastern fringes of space......Calgar!
There was some bad mold areas on this piece and the finecast Eddie got looks waaaay better.
Yea yea love him or hate him it is a great sculpture and fought hard not to convert him to Azriel .
Well here is a small progress while Ol' Death take a back seat for papa smurf.
Can't wait to see how calgar turns out when done by you! looks promising already!
I've had the fortune of stumbling across Massive Voodoo once or twice and was astounded by the work they produce, currently the iron armour salamander i'm working on is inspired by techniques used by one of their painters on a salamander terminator that is just jaw dropping! i'll try and find a pic again for you :-)
when do you think your next update will be? I just don't want to miss anything! :-)
And thank you for saying I inspired you with some of my work! it means a lot to me especially as you're so well versed in the hobby to start with and my work is based around quick and easy, I appreciate the comment and i'll do my best to actually paint something with time and care for you soon! :-)

Thanks for the kind words Nerdfest, I too find Massive Voodoo inspiring and full of knowledge for methods for this hobby.
As for near updates hopefully soon I had a busy Fathers day and did not get much painting done but looking to finish my vets first before Fasteddie's Calgar. I am taking my time on this one and using that model and Old Death as a break from the green and bonewhite so stay tune and thanks again for the compliment
Hey dakka peeps I'm back . Sorry it's been a while but you know it's summer and spent some time with family and friends. I also had some issues posting last night due to being away from the forum for over a week, but manage to correct that and here I am.
Ok as you know I put fasteddiexx1 in a headlock to paint his metal Calgar since he bought he finecast box set don't know why since he already has the metal set but I took advantage of the situation and viola I present you my take on this model.
There was lots of detail flaws in the casting in this model but did my best to hide them. Please give your honest opinion on how it turned out .
Thanks HAZZER well glad you liked it. Well sorry been away for a bit again, was on a little vacation to take my youngest daughter to Disneyland.
Well when I got back my nephew was done with his baseball and down here for the rest of the summer with his dad. So to surprise him this weekend for some gaming of 40k I decided to paint up a captain for his Blood Angels army. I did a speed painting took me around 4 hours total. Take a look and let me know what you think Maybe he will kick his dads Necrons this weekend.
LOL your speed painting looks like my best effort painting LOL ugh practice, practice makes better models.... I know, I know.... And I'm getting my direct TV installed this weekend!! YIKES!! 210 channels of WTH to watch!!
Looks great for speed painting dude! i'm glad I live so far away from you and your friend too! I don't think i'd like to be your friends dad if he's gonna get kicked in the Necrons! :-) sounds painful bro!
now!, more painting please! or I will force you to listen to Wu Tang Clan re mixed with mr bungle! you head WILL explode!

I just got it when you replied !!! Yea his squad he did was the army painter style prime, base, detail sorta and washed. Now his guys kinda dont match the captain I painted him lol. But hope it will inspire him.
Let's hope the game happens this weekend so I can witness as you put it watch him kick his dad in the necrons !!
Also kick fasteddiexx1 in his smurf nuts too
Hey dakka peeps I'm back ! Well I had to take a break from it all and then Space Marine the video game came out and energized my creative juices to full. Also fastediexx1 ordered our new battle mat from Zuzzy Miniatures. Its our second one my first was 4X4 and is a wasted land theme and the new one is called Wounded City and is now 4X6.
We used the airbrush this time and took sevral hours to complete. Below you will see my first battle mat and the new one. This is perfect for those people who do not have the storage space for a fully built game tabe or game boards. This just rolls up and store in a closet.
Let me know what you guys think.
Yay, you're back! missed you being around dude! that mat looks great, how was it when you first got it? did it smell much of rubber? and was it hard to paint? i'm thinking of buying one myself, the same one you just bought and i'd love your opinion on them
Now, where are your models? surely you must have painted something? please tell me you've done more!

Thanks nerdfest09 it's good to be back BTW Happy belated birthday brother . Yea needed a break from it all like I mentioned on your thread but after playing the new Space Marine game on Xbox I think I am fully chaeged. .
Yes the Zuzzy mats do smell like rubber at first but sorta airs out through time. As for what it looks like be fore you paint it look here http://www.zuzzy.com/ the two that fit well in the 40k world. ..well take that back three come to mind, Wounded City, Ruined Land, and The Despoiled Reaches. They come in various sizes and be warned it took fasteddiexx1 and I over 5 weeks to recieved ours but was comped a 11"x14" mat which Eddie will use to display his troops on.
Whew as for projects on my table fasteddiexx1 got me Michael the Arch Angel from Hytech Miniatures as a gift for painting his Calgar even though I really wanted too for free !
I will post its progress soon on my Dark Angels thread so stay tuned.
That looks pretty interesting GD1, glad to hear that you've been injected with the giant needle of inspiration that is the new space marine game! :-) i've heard a lot of people have played it then gone heavily back into the hobby! I told you ages ago there's no escape from 40k, it won't even let you have a break!....plastic crack indeed!
and why thank you my friend for the belated birthday greeting! I had a great day but didn't get any models though :-( but did you see the cheese cake?... :-)
Hope you start slapping some paint soon! i'm keen to see some more! i'll be finishing my Ork Warboss on friday and updating then, so I better get back into it dude and i'll catch you soon!

Yea I manage to be away from 40k for some years but always buying White Dwarf here and there and a few figures too. But this past year or so I had to downside my hobbies and 40k is been in most of my life since 1987 with fasteddiexx1 and even through my military days I manage to squeeze in a figure or two in.
But when the new DA came out a few years back with a new Codex and then 5th ed. I had to go all in.
So yea and no, I did stay away but kept coming back ( is there a AA for 40k ?? )
Well looking forward to your Ork Boss who btw looks awsome and more of your models.
Hello dakka friends I just wanted to let you guys know I updated my gallery. Please take a look and vote or comment.
I uploaded fasteddies Vindacator, my DA Chaplain, Belial, jetbike, test figure eldar, and my old death.
Here are a few pics of what I posted.
Ok guys and gals I am trying to expand my painting and picked up Asteroth and trying a different theme on him and see how it comes out.
First off Finecast is a Finefail. The amount of filling of bubble holes and mold linesI had to fix reminded me of my automotive days of filling and sanding .
Well I am going with a gold trim mostly around his armour and hope to impress our friend Eggroll .
Man I hope I can get close to his BA style. Well here is some of my headaches with this model.
Count me impressed already Grey. Your previous models were enough to do the job. I actually just put together my Asteroth model last week though mine was in metal so he wasn't as holey. Doubt I'd get a chance to paint him anytime soon though so he's just sitting in my display cabinet at the moment.
Looking forward to seeing your paintjob of him...don't let me down
Looking really good so far brother. I know you won't let him meet the same fate as this guy (brought to you by strikedtoodeeppainting) (real name surpressed to protect the innocent)...
Sorry this has been a running joke between GD1 and myself about a local self proclaimed "Michael Angelo" of miniature painting.
So here's a "Gitt'er Done" just for you GD1 heeeee heeee heeee
Hmmmm nice model! I myself know some 'professional' mini painters that fall (like that) juuuuuuust short of being professional, although that's close to perfect, i believe yours may turn out slightly better ;-)
Ok NF09 here is a small update for ya! Been a bit busy lately and forgot to post this update on Asteroth.
Took a bit of time on the shade and went with a mix of Paynes gray and Baddab black mix. And since this is a death mask I kinda went with the porcelin ( I think that is spelled correct ) /marble look on his helm.
I still got some blending and highlights on him.
Enjoy
That's pretty sick man! You know I have to say that old school Citadel pot you let me use feels really comfortable in my hand when I paint. I miss those old pots...
Dude, love the grim! his face is really nicely done and the armour is looking good so far, are you going to paint it like muscle or like actual lacquered ceramite? because whatever you do will be perfect i'm sure! i've seen your educating of Fasteddie and he's progressing fast! I may have ranted on his thread and now live in fear you may throw a compressor at me! :-)
fasteddiexx1 wrote: That's pretty sick man! You know I have to say that old school Citadel pot you let me use feels really comfortable in my hand when I paint. I miss those old pots...
Thanks! Yea the old pots due serve a purpose I owe it to Les for giving me the idea
Ogryn wrote:Nice so far.
Thanks Ogryn for tuning in.
Rogue Wolves wrote:you gotta nice look on the skin and armor
RT thanks yea trying to make it more like a marble-ish/ceramic more then skin since it is a deathmask.
nerdfest09 wrote:Dude, love the grim! his face is really nicely done and the armour is looking good so far, are you going to paint it like muscle or like actual lacquered ceramite? because whatever you do will be perfect i'm sure! i've seen your educating of Fasteddie and he's progressing fast! nerdfest09
Now why would I throw my compress.......hey you will run with it once I throw it at you sneaky sneaky! I know what your up to now...Nerfest gets a new compressor .
All fun aside yea trying to work the muscle look since GW did a nice sculpt I might as well show it. As for Eddie yea he is learning but the speed is what I want to work on him about
HAZZER wrote:Lools great grey! Looks like your nearly done! so far so good!
HAZZER
Yea almost done the details on the scroll and the wings kinda pissing me off at the moment but will post some new pics soon.
Ok guys I know you got some PM's from me on my new blog and since I am still unemployed I got nothing to do so check it out on the link above my signature or here http://greydeathone-artofwar.blogspot.com/2011/10/welcome-to-art-of-war-studio-blog.html I will try to make it very educational and fun and will like to do articles on my favorite artist on dakka that I subscribe to.
so check it out and hope you guys enjoy it and again thank you all who follow me on my threads!!
Happy Halloween folks! Well here is a small update been a bot distracted and busy.
I manage to do some painting on Astorath with details and mounted his hands on.
I also did a test fit of his jump pack using some poster tac to see how things looked.
I will update this thread when he is 100% completed so stay tune.
So here is a sneak peak of whats done.
Rogue Wolves wrote:looking nice, did you paint those on or did you use a macropen?
Thanks but nah old school with a brush.
nerdfest09 wrote:Keep going GD! he's looking good dude!
Thanks brother I should be done soon I been running around getting paperwork done to go back to work for my old company so hopefully this weekend so stay tune.
Norn King wrote:Very nice models.
Thanks NK for tuning in.
HAZZER wrote:Nice stuff!
HAZZER
Thanks HAZ. How is it going with all that new knowledge you gain?
@RW yea thats true bit also dont want it too look like a fresh scripted scroll where the letters are jet black and bold. But sometimes you gotta do it to pull your eye to it also even though its out of scale
Well my Dakka followers I updated my blog site please take a look and comment and thanks for the support everyone!! (click the www button below)
I finally completed Astorath and I hope you like my take on him. As some of you know there was alot of faults in this "Finecast" (more like Failcast) and had to fill alot of bubbles and fill areas where the mold was not complete.
I am not a great green stuff sculptor but did a decent job to fix those problem areas.
I had to use Secret Weapon bag of skulls to balance this model since he was back heavy and I did not want the model falling back. The base turned out great with the skulls and static grass.
I have plans on selling him and if any takers let me know.
Well nuff yapping, here he goes.
Let me know what you guys think.
HAPPY NEW YEAR DAKKA FRIENDS!!! Hope you all had a great holiday season and got all your hobby wishes from Santa!!
Sorry for not posting in a while bit like most of you I was very busy with work and holiday chores .
Well here is my first model for the new year. I did a another speed painting for my nephew's Blood Angels army, his dad got him a Razorback. So as good uncles Fasteddiexx1 and myself decided to finish it up.
I recruited fasteddie and his fasteddieforge to build it (I hate building) and I did all the painting.
Eddie completed it in less then two days and I painted it in 6 hours. Allowing it to dry between colors and other house duties it was completed.
It is tabletop quality and could have more details but looks good and will match his army.
Ok nuff jabbering here you guys go!!
Rogue Wolves wrote:looks sweet, nice highlights and the OsL isnt overdone
RW thanks and Happy New Year!
Eggroll wrote:Looks good. Nice job hooking him up with the extra turret too.
Happy New Year Eggroll yea Eddie has tons of bits and really hooked our nephew up on his first tank. BTW did a shout out to you on my blog regarding this build and I wanna thank you for the inspiration for your technique/style which is now my base on painting BA's in the future. So thank you brother!
Excellent stuff as usual GD1 i'd be stoked to have a tank painted by you! and asembled of course by sloweddiexx1 ;-)
are you going to paint the ram metal or weather it? or is it going to stay red? or am i going mad?
what's next on your bench? any more DA goodness? any more failcast?
Lovely work as always GDO. OSL on the rzrback is ace as is the jetburner on ole grim. Personal preference is that the wings are a touch flat but that's probably just the photo.
As has been said before your 'speed-painting' is very good, in fact I vote you're not aloud to call it that anymore, its too upsetting to the less gifted/lazier members of Dakka aka Me.
HAZZER wrote:Happy new year man! That rhino looks good man!Btw where have you been from my blog? LOL!
Happy New Year to you brother! Sorry been a bit lazy and busy to be on the web But I promise to make my rounds to my favorite blogs *cough erHazzers blog cough* .

Oh, and of course! HAPPY NEW YEAR! :-)
NF09
Happy New Year too you my brother from down under!! Well as for weathering I had no time it was a quick paint job before my nephew had to go home back north with his mom and step dad. Hell she came down a few hours early and cut into our small game of 575pts. As for whats on my table I still have to finish my RW and they look pretty hostile since I been ignoring due to my Grey Knights and small projects. So stay tune.
shingouki wrote:Your tabletop quality puts mine to shame.
Thanks shingouku practice makes perfect and after doing this for awhile and just fine tuned my style in the past 2 years thanks to the internet and this community of dakka it helps

Lenny!! Hey man I thought I got sucked up in the warp!! Where you been?!? Thanks man and yea gotta use my wifes digital SLR but man I gotta upload it and blah blah. .......Ok I am lazy .
Ok had a small game with my nephew and his dad $$Nightbringer$$ and just when my DA and my nephews BA was getting good his mom came in a few hours early to pick him up!!!
Oh well me and Nightbringer got a game in and got to test the new Necrons and well I got my power armour hide handed to me........ ....activation protocol, freakin warsyth and bad rolls and dont forget mind shakle scarabs oh well you win some and you lose some. Here is some pictures enjoy everyone cause I didnt
GreyDeathOne wrote:Oh well me and Nightbringer got a game in and got to test the new Necrons and well I got my power armour hide handed to me........ ....activation protocol, freakin warsyth and bad rolls and dont forget mind shakle scarabs oh well you win some and you lose some.
Is it an over-powered codex do you think, or just a turn of bad luck in the game? Also was checking around for the old card terrain from second Ed. today and ran across the old Storm of Vengeance expansion campaign with Belial as head of the 3rd company. In the back of the book are a few campaign badges that you should check out for inspiration.
@Lennysmash Nah it was a very small game not much variety of troops and yea bad dice rolls I mean really bad dice rolls. I even killed Belial myself and I'm playing DA!! WTF!! My rocket launcher scattered back into the direction of Belial and did not make a save talk about epic fail!!. As for the Necrons codex it is a big improvement which they needed since the Tau had 2 revisions and learning what each troop type does will help out in future games. So I think GW did a good job bringing the Necrons to 5th/6th ed standards and they can stay in the game longer and frustrate thier opponents more
Hey my dakka peeps, yes I am still kicking ! Sorry for not posting for a while I been working on more cars then figures and I also been working on a side project with Fasteddie on a army build to make some side cash to fund our hobby .
Well I wanted to show off what I got from my old dakka chaos friend Skalk Bloodaxe the Nurgle Lord of Vermont .
As some of you have been following my blog ( thank you all ) for a while I painted a Red Corsair squad and Huron for a client, well long story short he moved to Taiwan with his girl and was selling everything he owned to move there and I took him back and now Skalk is the proud owner of the Chapter Master of the Astral Claws Huron!!
And I got a box full of classic Terminators!!!! And a message from Skalk (see the picture below ).
What a flashback I got and brought great memories of the late 80's ahhhhh Rouge Trader .
Skalk buddy thanks a million!! "I still sense good in you" *Star Wars quote*
It may be small but an update's an update right! :-) your sneak peek is very promising! especially as i'm painting a red army now too..... ;-)
You like metal old school termies? I may have a couple of mint unpainted metal termie libby's and a chaplain in termie armour kickin' it in my nerd lair if you have any bits you may swap with a kindly old Nerd? PM me if you want them and i'll send you some pics? i'm not gonna use them.
Now when are you painting properly again? I have trouble following your blog at work where i'm on Dakka the most as it runs really slow and I just have to wait until you post here :-( probably because Dakka kicks ass right!
fasteddiexx1 wrote:Oh man, I think Skalk is reaching for the champion of chaos title LOL. Man I love those old school termies.
Come over this weekend and check it out!

Damo yea a update is a update But when I ignore my army and not do a proper update that erks me I gotta make time on my GK and DA soon. I promise soon I will do a proper update on my army and not my side projects .
Rogue Wolves wrote:thats hilarious skalk, its too bad you have to go... =][=
Agreed RW we will have to eliminate his army!!
HAZZER wrote:ooh! old school termies! Nice! can't wait (Sneek peek I mean)!
Yea Skalks got tons of 1st - 3rd ed figures. And thanks.
Shadow Nugz wrote:A bit delayed but please tell me you still have the original tires? An American beauty such as this deserves nice fat tires to squeal around on.
Back on topic; whats going to happen to those nice little terminators?
Nah bought the car that way and no fatty tires. Not into the drag scene and need the grip for road racing but know what your talking about. As for the termies well all DW soon.
I'm really glad those Deathwing Terminators have finally found a good home. They weren't ever going to see paint from me, and I know you'll do them justice.
I expect that Huron will be leading new raids with the The Red Corsairs very soon. VERY soon. My buddy Feldenglas was bitten by the Necron bug, and I'm hoping to stomp them right back into the crypt they came from.
You know I will paint them up really cool!! As for defeating Necrons I am with you my brother inlaw handed my power armour hide to me couple of weekends ago.
Keep me posted on Hurons battles.
them necrons can be a tough battle, but the ig arnt too bad themselves (at least i try to think that a guardsmen is as strong as any{who am i kidding})
Hey everybody sorry its been a long time since I posted anything. I been caught up with work but still been painting when I can.
As some of you know Fasteddie and I are building( well he is building and I am painting) a army that we will sell later to fund our hobby.
The Blood Angels are a very cool looking chapter and Eggroll inspired me to put my DA and GK aside and work on this army. I will still be working on my othwr two armies to take a break from the BA and will post any updates on my DA thread or this one.
I am going for a tabletop quality starter army that is better then the GW battleforce box has to offer and go with a assault base army.
Herw are some of the progress pictures below.
Its looking great man. Keep up the good work. Do you use an air brush for most of your painting or do you also paint by hand? Can't wait to see more from you.
Rogue Wolves wrote:looks like a clean paintjob on this bloody man
Thanks Rougue Wolves!
prime12357 wrote:Your red is turning out quite well, and Mephiston looks pretty freckin' cool. What'll be the final list of the army?
Thanks prime12357, take at look at my blogspot on the final army list (click on my banner)

Cool HAZZER I will check it out.
PapaPiggy wrote:Its looking great man. Keep up the good work. Do you use an air brush for most of your painting or do you also paint by hand? Can't wait to see more from you.
Thanks PapaPiggy for stopping in As for Airbrush yes most of the base color and some highlights and all details done the old brush way.
Hey Dakka folks, here is another small update. I am about 90% done with ol' Meph and about 80% done with Dante. I got details on Meph and basing and Dante his axe ,detail and basing.
Dante was sorta of a pain since he is Finecast (Failcast) Fasteddie had to resculpt the intake vents on his jump packs and don't get me started on bubbles being filled ugh !!
But overall he came out great and hope you guys like him. Let me know what you guys think!!
Very impressive GD1 that Meph model is great! it's good to see you back here! we've missed you! :-) have you made any progress with the tac marines? i'm keen to see how they turn out considering your DA are some of my favorite models i've seen for them!
Dante and methador are looking good grey! My only crasem is the PS on meth isent up to your normal standerds with your DA. Just thought it could be a better selling point if all charcters have a better painting finish compared to the rank and file.
nerdfest09 wrote:Very impressive GD1 that Meph model is great! it's good to see you back here! we've missed you! :-) have you made any progress with the tac marines? i'm keen to see how they turn out considering your DA are some of my favorite models i've seen for them!

Thanks NF09 it's good to be missed . As for the tac marines I am doing assault for this build and will start on the detailing soon.

Thanks HAZZER well the power sword is not done as you will notice the base hilt area is not painted only the blade. The details, basing and touch ups are the final steps on ol'meph and will show you by the end of the week. I might do some OSL on his plasma pistol but will see.
I live in my own little internet world to be sure. It's quiet and dark... low stress, myopic... Every once in a while someone like GDOne or yourself nerdfest turns a bright light on... then I have to scramble around until I find another dark corner to hide in.
Hey my dakka peeps!!! Sorry I been away for awhile had some house issues with my kitchen sink pipe breaking and flooding part of my house!?!? More on this head to my blog http://greydeathone-artofwar.blogspot.com/?m=1 but I manage to get some painting in with warjacks, going to Mr. Justin of Secret Weapon Miniatures weathering class and joining a local paint group.
So I been trying to get caught up on dakka threads and getting back to normal after spending over a week in a hotel while the contractors fix my house.
So here are a few pics of what has been going on with me and let me know what you guys think of my new logo/avatar? Happy Painting!
Rogue Wolves wrote:might i say i like the new logo sir!
RW Thanks I am glad you like it!!
HAZZER wrote:Lopve that warjack man! looks very cool! Soz anout your house man, that must of been anoyinging!
Hey HAZZER, Thanks man yea it was the type of drama not needed. The water started to flow into my garage and thats my lair where things happen.
Gitsplitta wrote:Impressive Warjack GDone. Pretty spiffy logo too!
Gits thanks brother glad you like it thought some of my 40k friends here would rake me over the coals for painting WM jacks . Yea I too love my new avatar/logo, my friend does alot of photoshop stuff and asked him to make me a logo with some of my input on the design.

You won't get any grief from me... I love the look of Warjacks & War Machine in general... just don't have time in my life for a second war game. I did get a box of Cryx Jacks last year at Adepticon that I'm hoarding just in case some day I get the time to do some "frivolous" painting!
dsteingass wrote:The Avatar is badass man! I absolutely LOVE the shoulder mounted airbrush!!

Well I thought it will take away from 40k but kinda like the idea to paint and do something different once in a while. You know kinda like eating the same thing everyday.
HAZZER wrote:SO your into warmachine too now?
Well both 40k and WM. It's like in the past I did 40k and Battletech.
Sorry for the late response Hazzer Battletech is a game of large mechs battling it out like 40k. Really fun game but the sculpts need improvement and need to be at par with Heavygear.
More info on this go here http://bg.battletech.com/
Hey GDOne! Got to play a demo game of War Machine yesterday at Adepticon... really neat game! Going to set time aside this "painting season" to break open my Cryx box and paint up the minis. Should be a nice break from all the 40k and give me fun little diversion from time to time.
So I'll be counting on you to provide me with some good inspiration in the nonce!

Ahh Gits I am so jealous of you being at Adepticon!! Ahhh Cryx you gotta love the sculpts on the Privateer Press stuff it kinda reminds me when GW/Citadel use to make back in the day. Now they make cookie cutter miniatures with bells and whistles Well I still love GW even though they do crazy stuff.
Now I gotta check your thread to see updates lol!!
@NF09 Here is what I been working on I took a break from my 40k models for now and been working on my Warmachine battlegroup. I am sticking to a basic table top painting level to get these guys on the board soon and spent a little more time on the Warcaster (of course I could'nt do a basic job on them )
I also got my lightbox yesterday from Amazon for 30 bucks what a deal!! I took some sample picks to test it out let me know what you guys think.
I am also working on a Khador warcaster for Fasteddie since he is building my ork deffdred that I will be painting to test out some new techniques I've learn and want to apply it on it. So stay tune. So here is some pics and nuff talk
I had that lightbox! Gave me a lot of good service, then I passed it on to Solar_lion because I get tired of looking at his crappy pics! Love the work on Marcus (excellent OSL) and the warcaster. His head looks so tiny in all that shoulder armor!
Pics look pretty good GD1. One two that are a bit off are the first two of the WM guy...that one looks a bit over exposed with quite a bit of washed out areas.
Yellowbeard thanks for tuning in Yup thats the one!

Eggroll wrote:Pics look pretty good GD1. One two that are a bit off are the first two of the WM guy...that one looks a bit over exposed with quite a bit of washed out areas.
Hey Eggroll, yea figured out I had the box upside down well chinese knock offs dont come with directions. I had to go back to the Amazon site and see how it was set up Then when I fixed it as you can see the termies and Vladimir came out nice.
I am glad you liked it though!!

No probs grey! But I'm geussing the only difference is Fair, Decent prices and REAL Quailty conrtol
Ok I'm back and I did complete a Ork Deff Dred with some oil paint weathering before 6th Ed came out and now posting it now and also completed a commision of a Malfaux models.
Hope you guys like it. Enjoy and happy painting!
Gitsplitta wrote: Excellent work GDO... well worth the wait. Glad to have you back in the swing of things!
Thanks Gitz' yea been getting back into the flow of things and with commissions and now my Dark Vengeance box set I got quite a bit to keep me busy.
Well guys I got distraced away from my DA models and I had to add another model that will go up for sale at my local game shop's Flea Market next Saturday and its the Necron Spyder. This model looks awsome compaired to the metal turd they had. Let me know what you guys think of this WIP so far?
Thanks guys this was a quick project and going to sell it at my local game store Game Kastle during thier monthly Flea Market.
Here is the finished model ajd I will post better pictures on my gallery later.
That lightbox is great, what did you make it out of and what are you lighting it with? Do you have to do much postwork on the photos? I ask because my attempt at making one was a dismal failure and I'm trying to get a good one up and running.
I'm derailing your thread, though - the minis are great, I love the understated OSL. You've hit just the right balance imo, it's not all over the place or even necessarily the dominant feature of the minis, but it's bright enough to stand out and it really looks as though it's glowing.
Hey thank you again guys for the great comments ! Yea I agree that the osl should look natural and not Tron like lol! But everyone has their own taste and style and that's what makes this hobby so diverse and fun. I like the realism of my models as much as possible. Kinda like my Dark Angels. Don't get me wrong I like the GW look but it looks to cartoonish to me. Sorry started rambling
Ok back to the comments . @the Kvlt Ghost - I bought the light box on Amazon and if you look at the older post you will see a link someone has posted.
Hey everyone forgot to post the completed picture of the Canoptic Spyder plus I saw our local Dakkite PaintStuff's painted Servo Skull (Awsome) and took a crack at one myself. Let me know what you think.
There is more pictures on my blog.
Hey everyone! Well I have been working on and off on Canis which is a amazing sculpt but in Failcast its not fun filling bubbles and dipping parts in hot water to make things straight!?! Anyways I am pretty much done airbrushing all the parts and now to detailing and some washes. So Nerdfest09 here you go brother you can finally see it up close.
Thanks guys glad you like how it's turning out. After painting the LC I realize there was several bubbles and went to fill them then snap!!!!! bubbles in the claws made it more fragile. I soaked it in hot water earlier last week to straightened it but now it's worse!
Damn you GW damn you! Ok will update you guys soon.
Ok now my Dark Angels on the back burner due to picking up another commission of Malifaux models, and man I gotta say these sculpts are awsome. I started them Satuday night and here is the progress on them.
eldartau1987 wrote:I do like the Malifax style of art. They do a good job of making the elementals look daunting. Your paintjob adds a good bit to this feeling!
Thanks and yea most of the models do give you a sense of emotion. GW use to make one off figures that moved you but now pretty static now these day
If you want to see more pictures on this commission you can visit my blog click on my website below.
Hey everyone anothwr small update, my garage got to hot today so little painting till tonight.
I satin varnish both models and washed them with a oil wash and did more details on the Snow Storm beast and the Avatar model. Let me know what you guys think.
Ok another small update I got the models on their bases and based it in snow and man that gets everywhere!! Well take a look. More pictures on my blog click below!
Ok small update. I tried searching the web for reference on The Blessed of December and nada. So had to use the box art. So I am very pleased it came out great! Let me know what you guys think. So
Anybody tried using baking soda as snow with any success? I like how the scale model train snow looks but would like to get a fresh powder snow look. Any tips would be nice. Thanks
Yes GD1 I have used baking soda and pva glue on my old SW termies it works well and i've not had any problems with it staying on or discolouring :-)
here's a pic or two:
Thanks NF09 sorry for the late response. I caught a chest cold then picked up several commissions and have hardly anytime to post on my various sites I am on including my own blog .
I will try it out on my commission Malifaux models and post the results. Thanks again.
nerdfest09 wrote: You see GD1, my snow effect was so realistic it gave you a cold! :-)
Lol hope not just got over it . BTW yup it worked I dont do too much snow scene bases but got that feather in my cap now thanks again.
Ok my Malifaux commission is over and now on to my other commissions of a basic DA paint job and 1 Helldrake and 2 Forgefiends. Here is some pictures of the Malifaux guys.
Wow GDO... just wow. I love the contrast between the crystalline blue thing and the female form coming out of his chest. Love the winged woman as well. Very nicely done my friend.
Gitsplitta wrote: Wow GDO... just wow. I love the contrast between the crystalline blue thing and the female form coming out of his chest. Love the winged woman as well. Very nicely done my friend.
Thanks Gits yea it's one of my favorites too. Wish the scale is a bit more bigger. These models remind me of the 80's Ral Partha minis very small and details could be better, that's why I switched to Citidel during the sametime which had better details.
Very nice work! That would have been the very last faction I chose for Malifaux, but they look amazing! I especially love the river-stones on the bases.

Thanks dstiengass the base is from Secret Weapon and got the color scheme from a Belgian cobblestone picture online.
Ok sorry for the late response I been grinding away on these commissions and balancing everyday life So my buddy Eddie built the Helldrake and will be dropping off the Forgefiends off tomorrow. I am also working on a Dark Vengeance DA squad and using my basic tabletop level of painting.
Here is whats on my desk enjoy!
Hey dakkites another small update I finally got my second Forge/Maulerfiend from fasteddiexx1 of Mortis Forge all built and magnatized.
Also about 75% done with my clients DA squad just gotta finish up the Ravenwing and HQ. check it out.
Happy Painting.
As much as the Fiends look like Dinobots once you see them you can really see them in battle on the table and I think they're growing on me! I may have to convince my mate Mitch to buy one for me to paint for him :-)
and the squad is looking sharp as! the sarge has great skin tone and the tabbard is really nicely shaded GD1 the client should be stoked with them! DA are whispering to me too at the moment! although they keep sticking their tongue's in my ear! I don't know about them boys hmmmmm?
