Lovely take on the librarian, refreshing to see one that isn't blue actually. Captain's coming along, but i've always wondered, why is it DV Captain WIP 2 when I can only see one update? this always seems to be the case with your updates, you're 1 step ahead of me on the table as well as your blog ahaha

@Mark - Yep you guessed it, there will be a bit more light grey in the mix, but still mainly Green/Red

@LDP - I typically have WIP stages, WIP 1 is bare plastics to show the conversions, WIP 2 is usually Primer and/or base colours, WIP 3 is typically base layers with a wash, WIP 4 is first layering, WIP 5 second layering/additional highlights, WIP 6 usually metal highlights and the remaining smaller details.

Update: A few more layers done

Cheers Gits, although the model is technically complete (to the standard I was happy with)

Update: Next up is some DV Terminators, base armour done with the airbrush and on to using a wash to line the creases

I see where Gits is coming from tbh Knightley, and I was going to suggest one last highlight on the feathers for the shoulder pad and helme. Just a lighter grey, not pure white. I feel it needs a little pop to it. Other than that it looks great tbh

Ah, my bad. Still thinking everything is going to end up looking like your GKs.

Post by: Knightley

@Childe - Fair call, I've sent the picks to the client, if he is happy with him I'll leave it (so I don't end up going back and doing everything to my GK standard)

@Gits - You and me both, I'm having to make hard calls to stop painting at certain stages, or I would go full hog and that's not efficient for a commission

Update: big chunk of the other base colours done

@Childe - Cheers matey!

@Mad - Hahaha I guess my version of a commission may be out of touch with what a normal commission should look like?

Update: well finally I have completed the 7th push, almost a year doing some very large models combined with some commission stuff thrown in the mix. Over all I'm slightly dissapointed in myself for taking so long to get all the tanks done, yet proud that I got all those tanks done. Such an existential crisis eh? So what's next I hear you type on your key boards... then delete because I've written what I intend on doing next.... well you'll have to wait till tomorrow for that. Lets say I have a lot of them, and they aren't grey.

Pics from the 7th push pile for those who like that kind of thing

I wouldn't get commission work done by you, because it would make the rest of my army look like garbage.

When did that push get started? It's all looking good.

That Stormsword is gray right?

I'm renaming my bl0rg in your honor.

American spellings, btw. Google it.

Is it summer there? If so, screw you.

I'm very impressed with your commission work, shows you take pride in what you produce which makes you a great commission painter in my book... ever wanted to paint a Tyranid army?

Congratulations on a great year of work Knightley, that tank in the middle is a beast! I didn't realise how big it was until I saw the group photo.

Looking forward to next update to see what is coming up... a lot of them and not grey, I'm intrigued.

Gray armor color. In those three words we have seen the differences in American spelling to everyone else

And yes, it is summer here at the moment and it is hot

@Moonie - I've seen your work, I wouldn't be so hard on your self. Now in answer of your questions: The latest push started on 2014/02/17 ended on 2015/02/3. Yes that 'Felblade' is 'Grey' and so very gloriously so . I do like the name change, Sloppy and Rainbow is a great title! I Googled American spelling, but all that showed up was guns and eagles with freedom splattered all over the images. Yes currently summer with a overly muggy 27 degrees (that's Metric, btw, Google it )

@Gits - Thanks man

@Mad - Funny you mention Tyranids, my younger brother has been floating ideas about starting a nid army and I was looking at finding ways to paint 240+ gaunts in a short space of time. so yeah I could be interested in giving it a blat.

@Cam - Cheers mate, yep we do get winters, but no snow where I live it just gets rainy and cold.

Update: well I've kept you in suspense long enough

As you may have read up above I do have a Younger brother who is a 40k nutter like me
Spoiler:

He's living overseas but before he left I was fortunate to 'inherit' his model cases in those cases included the Chaos lords you've already seen repainted. However what was also in the case was...
.....
.....
....
Necrons

Spoiler:

Please note these were painted around 2004

Also in the case were some sprues of un-made necrons, which leads me to the new force I am painting

I'm using commission money and christmas money to buy some more, I've just done a good deal with a NZ'er who is moving overseas and is selling his unpainted crons quite cheap, so expect more dude!

So scheme?
Well I've been following a UK painter who has an account here on Dakka
http://taleofpainters.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/tutorial-how-to-paint-necrons-garfy-way.html

He scheme looks amazing, however very time consuming and I am looking at getting some models on the table in a short time so I can get back to the Grey Knights!
So here we have it, please comment on your thoughts, theories and concerns and lets get this party started..... or at least continuing.

Good year's work. In America, we have really only have bald eagles, guns, freedom, and processed food. It's wondrous. So sorry it is 27 there, but it is 14 here so not that sorry. Don't know what that is in C, but whatever it is has a minus in front of it.

So, Necrons next? I'm down to see that. I would love to see you tackle some Harlequins. Bet you could kill those.

Garfy's crons are my all time favorite, I'd love to see you do some up in that same scheme. In the wise words of one Jean Luke Picard, make it so!

Crons look to be very good again this edition. Have fun with them... there are a lot more painting options than may be initially apparent.

Beware edge highlighting. You will learn to hate it.

@Moonie - So I looked up how to translate Degrees in to Fahrenheit and it mentioned something about chanting to the fore fathers, not sure if that was relating to four farthings, which as it turns out is one penny, but in any case, no effin idea how you change it. I'd actually like to try my hand at some really outrageous harlies, bright yellows, reds, purples and pinks. I think I could slay it.

@WM360 - I'll see if I can do something similar, I don't want to have to do 5 hours per model like I do with the GKs, so maybe a bastardised version of it?

@Gits - Note wisely taken Gits, I suspect there will be a lot of fine detail in my future

Update: so public holiday here in NZ so spent some time with the family, however did manage to get some additional work done, put all the painted models in simple green and started assembling models.
These are the sprues from inside my inherited crons

Managed to assemble a Triarch stalker and 2 wraiths (I brought a bunch of guys but he only had two wraiths, somehow need to find one more to make a squad of 6)

Oh and here are all the currently purchased models
Spoiler:
1 x Imotekh
1 x Destroyer Lord
5 x Crypteks
5 x Necron Lords
5 x Deathmarks
1 x C'Tan Shard
5 x Lychguards
5 x Triarch Praetorians
1 x Triarch Stalker
58 x Necron Warriors
10 x Necron Immortals
2 x Ghost Arks
5 x Canoptek Wraiths
15 x Canoptek Scarabs
3 x Tomb Blades
3 x Necron Destroyers
2 x Annihilation Barges
1 x Doom Scythe
3 x Canoptek Spyders
1 x Necron Monolith

Hell yeah! Get you some Harlies! I'd look forward to you making me look foolish.

There's a neat scheme in the new Visions for Necrons a guy used where it was black with red edge highlighting. I would despise painting that nonsense, but I could see it working with you.

What's your plan for these robuts? If you already said it, I missed it.

@Gits - Cheers, works about to be about 4700 odd points, with a few more purchases to make (but will be a while I feel)

@Mad - Wait no further, a test squad done below

@Desubot - you have to protect ones rear, I think sir mixalot said something along those lines

Update: Got the force primed

And started on a test squad to see how quickly I could paint them.... turns out pretty darn quickly with this scheme

Models washed with nuln oil the Dry brushed silver

A mix of rhyza rust and lahmian medium put in to the joints and typhus corrosion applied to the lower legs, and black applied to the shoulders.

Dark red applied to the shoulders, then edge highlighted ( I can see what you mean about edge highlighting now Gits...) washed with bloodletter glaze, dark blue applied to the energy bits on the gun, then lightened up to show a bit of power. red dots in the eyes.

So this got smashed out in a night. Not sure on the base style yet, might go with a desert look with the GW crackle paint, just need to buy it.
next up will start mass painting.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/02/12 10:06:24

Post by: moonpie

I've messed with the crackle. Make sure to put a good undercoat down first. I use my bases as a palette and I had rainbow and metal peeking out when I first tried it.

Do some tests with it as well as it works best at a specific thickness you will have to discover. You took an idea I had about mixing the ryza rust/lahmian medium. That workout well?

I like the corrosion, but it is more opaque than I thought. Not really a wash. Some medium should take care of that. Looking good so far. Good pace.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/02/12 14:21:46

Post by: Gitsplitta

You can do extreme highlights on metal/silver with white. I'm just thinking if you pick out a few spots on each model to edge highlight up to white (usually prominent corners & such) it may make them pop a bit more.

Looking good!

I like what you are doing with the gauss guns having them blue instead of the normal neon green

For some reason I find those scarabs really cute... look like tiny shuttles.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/02/13 08:05:58

Post by: Knightley

@Moonie - Noted, you think the solid brown base that I currently have will be fine? any other colour you might suggest? I remember seeing Duncan Rhodes doing a ryza rust/medium mix on the GW page and yes, it worked amazingly! I went for a slightly opaque look to the corrosion as its on the feet and not all of the feet would have the corrosion, over all its understated, but quick so that means it wins out there.

@Gits - I might consider that when I go back around a second time doing more details, at this stage it table top quality and I'm trying for speed right now (will get to add more bling later in the year perhaps)

@Graven - Hahaha, I had something for this....
Spoiler:

@Edreynaline (shortening to Ed for now) - I put my one in spoilers so you can be free from the filth infesting our cinemas at the moment (and yes, I did read the Twilight fan fiction, but only before I knew it was one) Also thanks heaps for the Sub!

@Mad - Yeah, the dark red and blue I think offer a good contrast. The scarabs get stuck to the bases because on the stands they break really easily and I lost some already

Update: Hands up who is batch painting like 100 models right now? Just me. why did I do this....

Yeah, not much advice here, dude. Do your thing. All I know about rust is one of my old managers used to tell me it is more orange than people think. He was SERIOUSLY into metallurgy.

@Gits - I had my boss make a 50SoG comment, I almost threw my water bottle at him.

@Moonie - Dude, how have you not applied tar and feathers to anyone going to see "that" film!?

@Desubot - Agreed, I'm hoping mine looks more orange than red (if it goes red then it'll clash with the should armour)

@Stormwall - Yeah, well I may be giving that idea up in short order (see below)

Update: What we have here is more batch painting, a slow an painful process, however! I might revert back to units to make things more visually quicker.

Tar and feather? Heck, no. We just make money off them. I did catch a couple scenes between theater checks and booth work and it made me quite uncomfortable. But, whatever...$10.25, please and on to the next one.

Keep up the good work, Knightley. Definitely not tarring and feathering you.

I have a degree in Critical Studies from the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, so... certified.

Here's 10 movies I am huge about currently:

Only Lovers Left Alive, Whiplash, Once Upon a Time in the West(any Sergio Leone, but that's my favorite), Road Warrior, Skeleton Twins, Celeste and Jesse Forever, Beginners, Elysium, Whiplash, A Royal Affair, Drive, The Lego Movie, Way of the Gun, Dune, Whip It, everything Tarantino, everything Terence Malick, Fury, Kick Ass, Marvel MCU, and Battleship.

Wanted to end on an awful film that I love. Guess that is mostly a lot of new ones. Hitchcock has some good ones and there are a lot of really good older movies. As far as NZ movies go, there are a lot of good ones, Once Were Warriors is my favorite. Jango Fett is a BEAST.

Scarabs are good looking. I'm sure if you go in smaller batches, you can keep up speed, keep up quality, and maybe retain some sanity.

Post by: Knightley

@Mad - Just different stages of where I got to that session, I really want more of them, so easy to paint.

@Moonie - I note whiplash is there twice, although there are also movies there I haven't heard of so this has given me some new movies to search out! Not surprising NZ is either known for the Lord of the Rings movies.... or Once were warriors, I recall spending time with some Brits in Bosnia Mid 2001 and Kiwi's were known by either Rugby or Once were warriors (Lord of the rings hadn't been released at the time) and we were always quoted about "cook me some eggs" good times, good times

@Childe - All the scarabs, all the scarabs!

Update: More done on all the scarabs, just doing the base to a brown now

I pose the same question to anyone willing to put fingers to key board about their top 10 movies, I'm interested to hear what people have to say.

I have no movie qualifications what-so-ever as will be evidenced by this list.

Blade Runner, Big Trouble in Little China, Casablanca, Seven Samurai, LoTR Trilogy (I know they don't follow the books, I don't care), The Good The Bad & The Ugly, The Fifth Element, Dracula (1931) and The Blues Brothers.

There are probably two dozen more that I could swap in and out at will, but these come to mind not only as some of my favorites but representing some of the genre's I like most or are indicative of certain times in my movie watching life.

Oh god, now there is a question...

These are my films, which aren't necessarily my top ten, but are definitely influential upon me. (I have also included my reasons for them):

Alien:
with George Lucas opening the floodgates for how science fiction films could be, this imo was the first step into the future of the genre we now know.
Plus H.R. Geiger was a visionary artist and designer, who directly or indirectly is the influence of many things within the hobby today.

Blade Runner:
Philip K. Dick was always going to influence Sci-fi, and the short story of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? paved the way for the genre to think on grand operatic scales.
The scenes and landscapes shown in the film stuck with me from a young age, and the view of the corporation building when Harrison Fords character visits is not only vast, but inspiring.

Princess Mononoke:
Often accused of being a tree-hugger by my mother, the story of Ashitaka and Mononoke is one vastly relevant in todays society: Look after this world, its the only one we have. I'm a big believer in the Gia principal, not that the planet is a sentient being, but that it is alive and that it gave us life and we should respect it more than we do.

The Empire Strikes Back:
The space opera goes full blown mind blowing. It was one of those seminal films which, as you watch the battles in space, for good over evil, love in the darkest days, and revelations you couldn't possibly dream of, it ends with a mind numbing jolt wondering what the hell is happening and when are you going to find out what happened next. As a Kid it blew my mind.

Ghost in the Shell:
I have a thing for Philosophy and Sociology, if you've watched this film you'll understand the appeal on that front. If you haven't and want to give it a go, make sure you do so with zero distractions, and a day following to get over whatever revelations on life you may have come to the preceding day watching it

Godzilla:
Don't ask me why, but I've a soft spot for watching grown men in rubber costumes hitting each other... this is where my childhood came from (I was a 90's child with watching the Power Rangers), and by god I love seeing the big old lizard kick butt!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail:
British sensibilities thrown firmly out the window, this film along with life of brian was never going to go down well with the majority of people... then again my sense of humour is warped at the best of times... so the Python team was always going to appeal to the likes of me... You'll either get it or you won't. Consider it Marmite.

Pans Labyrinth:
Now, I am ever the eternal optimist, dreamer of dreams and hoper of far-flung hopes (cookie for the person who gets the quote), and the way the films duality plays during a setting of the spanish civil war, is a work of sheer genius which I cant help but fall in love with. If you've never seen it, do, but be prepared for looking at the story in two ways... are you an Optimist, or a Realist?

Stargate:
Growing up I had a thing for Ancient Egypt, and always had a love for Sci-fi... so when you throw both together your going to get a film I gush over and spawned a tv series... whats not to love?

The Dark Crystal:
Quite possibly my favourite film growing up. Brian Froud was a frigging genius of a designer, and I'm in awe of his work (check out the book of his designs for the film if you can, it even expands on the story and history), I could only hope to be half the man who created a film that was so visually stunning to me as a child, that it would be one of many reasons I'd love to be a props designer and maker.

Sorry if I waffled...

Love the colours on the Scarabs, dude.

Movies. Hmm, very tough question, get it all the time from the kids (I teach Media).

@AnUnearthlyChilde - similar tastes Loved Dark Crystal as a kid but scared the snot out of me

In no particular order:
Casablanca - cinematic perfection. Nuff said.

Kiss Me Deadly - massively influential noir, shot quickly on a shoestring, gave as rolling glass credits, mysterious boxes that are a portal to hell, multiple shots of the same explosion, cameras mounted inside the back of cars - I could go on, and on, but basically it's just a damn fine film.

Brick - neo-noir set in a high school. Rion Johnson (Looper)'s first film, cracking movie.

No Name on the Bullet - brilliant, dark, atypical Western, (1959) way ahead of its time, from Gene L [see forum posting rules] (many trek episodes)

Blade Runner (Final Cut) - just echoing previous comments, really

Psycho (original, naturally) - it is so not what most people think it is. Brilliant manipulation from the master.

What's that, 6?

I'm going to cheat: all of the Toy Story movies. Hey, gits had LotR Innovative, heart-warming, and just stunning. Also, why are Disney movies about absent parents?

Very few modern movies make my list, hmm. I'll have to have a think for my final 3! Choose wisely, eh?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Touch of evil - Charlton Heston as a Mexican, Orson Wells as a.crooked.cop. Amazing.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Love and Death # Woody Allen at the top of his game, ridiculous and clever

(phone misbehaving, sorry)

STAR WARS despite being a massive Trekkie, this is where.it all.started. First.video I ever saw, wore out my uncles copy I watched it so much.

@Gits - Some great movies in there Gits, particular fan of the Blues brothers and the Fifth Element

@Childe - You and I have a very similar taste in movies it seems, also Monty Python for the epic win

@Graven - Quite a few on there I haven't seen before so more movies to put on the list. I do recall seeing brick while I was raiding dungeons in WoW and from what I recall it was a very interesting movie.

Update: Scarabs done

Staying on the topic of movies and again for anyone wanting to reply:
What was the first movie you remember seeing in the cinema/theatre. Mine would be Baron Munchausen, I recall being transfixed by what I saw and terrified of the deaths angels, I haven't rewatched if for fear of ruining my memory of it.

I'm loving those scarabs, not sure why but they are really doing it for me

Hmmm. Movies.

First movie I remember seeing in a cinema was The Princess Bride. There may have been ones before hand... but this is first I remember My name is Inigo montoya, you killed my father prepare to die.

My top movies.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring... my favourite of the LOTR trilogy... stayed close to the book, was the first one, and I LOVE the mines of Moria, especially Balrog vs Gandalf on the bridge.... I love that movie.

Aliens. Yes Alien was fantastic and a genre defining movie, but I actually saw Aliens first on TV and was blown away and has always stuck with me... then watched the first one and enjoyed that too.

Shaun of the Dead. I like zombie movies, and this one is awesome fun, and follows the tropes very well while throwing in some new content. I have even built a Winchester Tavern out of Lego

Predator. Cloaked alien hunting in the bush, love it. That weird freaky "jungle" music noise they used is ingrained in my memory.

Ghostbusters. If there's something strange in the neighbourhood, who you going to call?

Jurassic Park... I hope the one coming out later this year is a good one.

Leon: The Professional.

I think this will do... don't want to bore you with my nostalgia

And some more obscure movies you may or may not have seen which I enjoy. Dog Soldiers. Stickmen, Black sheep. (Last two are kiwi movies)

@Mad - Oh wow, the princess bride, that does bring back some memories, I recall seeing that as well, but a bit later. Black sheep! Leon the professional! good choices dude, good choices!

@Childe - we are the knights who now say "Ekke Ekke Ekke Ekke Ptangya Zoooooooom Boing" Ni

Update: So finished up 20 warriors, certainly liking this scheme easy to paint and looks pretty cool from a top down perspective.

@Gits - The payoff for doing a table top quality with a simple paint scheme

Looking good there Knightley, can't wait to see your legion arise!

On the subject of movies again, I have another question, one to raise the stakes on your original one...

What are your top 10 movies of your Childhood?

Mine are:

Tron
The Dark Crystal.
Innerspace.
Black Hole.
Flight of the Navigator.
Legend.
Back to the Future.
Willow.
The Neverending story.
The Land Before Time.

Whats yours?

Post by: Knightley

Oooh that is a great question Childe!

Tough to really put a finger on how I would rate them, however why don't I rattle off ones I recall and go from there 1990 - 2000 (ages 8 to 18)

Labyrinth (re-watched this years and years later only realising David Bowies Junk is on display for a portion of the film...)
Hook (Still one of my all time Robin Williams movies)
Jurassic Park (ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word)
Ace Ventura (Aaalllllllrighty then.)
Robocop (Ed209 was always being made out of lego)
Anything Mel Brooks, Space balls, robin hood men in tights and blazing saddles
Anything Monty Python (I blame my Dad for this, well blame isn't the right word, I thank my Dad seems better)
Spoof movies, Naked Gun, Hot shots, Airplane etc
Gremlins 2 (love the Hulk Hogan cameo)
Happy Gilmore (guilty pleasure for sure)

Update: more done on the immys, lychies and some warriors

Are those on 25 or 32 mm bases?

My childhood movies are every movie that has ever starred Stallone, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Charles Bronson, Jean Claude Van Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Clint Eastwood, and James Bond in ALL his incarnations. I love my dad.

Also, The Cutting Edge. Yes, the movie about figure skating. My father likes action movies and figure skating.

Looking good on the Necrons, very...robotty. What does it say about me that I post the same time as you and you are on the other side of the planet?

Interesting choices there. Happy gillmore a guilty pleasure? That film is awesome!

Your speed and consistency as ever is putting me to shame Knightley!

Action films and figure skating is one of the oddest combos I've seen in a while I must admit...

Post by: Knightley

@Moonie - Sounds like you belong in the southern hemisphere is your up at the same time as me Bases are 25mm as all these dudes are pre codex drop. Looking at your child hood movies looks like you had a pretty awesome child hood

@Childe - I got a lot of flak from high school mates who panned anything Adam Sandler. I suspect once the troops/infantry are done I'll slow down a bit, these guys have very little edge highlighting so I can smash them out in short order.

Update: finished the immy's, lychies and warriors, however neglected to photo them, went on to finish another 10 warriors today

Nice! That's going to look burly rad when it is done. Thanks for taking us on the road you are traveling with this, Knightley.

Remember to do several tests at various thicknesses with that GW crackle. And shake the crap out of it.

Do English speakers outside of America say "crap" or is that like trunk and boot or truck and lorry? My girl was watching Pretty Little Liars(which I refuse to participate in) while I was doing anything else, but I caught a scene where an American girl was interviewing with a dude at "Oxford" and he referred to America as the colonies. I would have fought that guy.

Anyways...Cheers!

@Graven-So, it is a word? Got it. Crap functions like the unDakkable S-word, so it has all the varied and wonderful dictionary notations as that favorite little word of mine, without the being a nasty swear thing.

Pretty much moonpie. In the terribly English manner:
"This is crap" - It is not terribly good.
"I feel crap" - I feel unwell.
"That's a load of crap" - You are mistaken, sir. (whereas "a lot of crap" just wouldn't fly, as it were , although load is still arguably an egregious Americanism).

@Moonie - You're welcome mate, thanks for the heads up on the crackle paint. I think the word crap has many uses, much like this history of the F word (you can Youtube it as it NSFW) Also rods are blue, with a lighter blue energy beam through it.

@MarsNZ - Coming into contact with a new Dex does have its advantages, I suspect the next game will be much closer

@Graven - Sadly no glow dude, I "may" do glow when I go back around again to pick up more details, but at this stage its table top quality first!

Ah, and THIS is the the Knightley touch I love, but cannot replicate.

Do you find it a burden or a boon to be equipped with gyroscopically balanced bionic arms in place of the shaky meatbags the rest of us are afflicted with?

I imagine you must find it helpful in your career as a vascular surgeon.

Also, sorry for the crap threadjack. That was a crappy thing for me to do...Har Har.

You'd think I would be a surgeon in my off hours, but while I can methodically work through edge highlighting a bunch of times, the mind wants to fiddle with everything (oi, out of the gutter) and any person I'd be operating on might end up with a lung in the wrong place, or the red thing connected to my... wristwatch.

Threadjack away, I'm always down for some random conversations. It allows me to talk more about other things other than 40k!

Those look great! Nice work on the blue glowy bits. Have you considered making the flat panels on the fins red like the bike? I think it might tie the whole thing together nicely.

I had thought about doing those as red, time constraints had me stick with silver. Perhaps I might jump to red if I go back through the models again at a later date.

Looking good, Knightley. As per usual.

I wanted to thank you and commiserate. You inspired me on my own binge batch paint. In the past 2 weeks I have banged out 65-70 little Empire thugs.

So, thanks?

Also, my girl wants to visit NZ to see the hobbit holes. I asked her who gets to be Sharky and who gets to be Wyrmtounge?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/03/29 23:32:16

Post by: Knightley

Oh buddy, what I have I done, batch painting 70 models.... top effort but madness incarnate indeed! Also Hobbiton? could be worth the visit if you lived in NZ, probably not if you have to travel more than 6 hours by any means to get there. But if you do I expect you to drop in to say hi, NZ is a small place after all.

Update: Having to keep plugging away at the silver, a lot to do.

@Graven - Fair call, I wanted a look like how I feel when I wake up in the morning, a little rusty in the joints, red eyed and a bit frazzled

@Pyro Pete - 100% Yes, paint in pieces, learn from my mistake very difficult to get paint in all the hard to reach places, I got lucky that part of my paint scheme is black so all the bits I can't reach I'm just leaving blank.

If the brush cant hit it, then neither can the light. Leave it black. The CYA on this is that you are "using negative space".

Post by: Knightley

@Gits - Thanks mate, I was really happy with how it all came out.

@Calibanite Lion - Yeah, some of the older weapons look much more blood thirsty and fearsome compared to the newer more refined weapons, heck, marines are there to strike fear into their enemies!

@Graven - Thank you!

Update: Apologies for no posting for a bit, after the last push I've been trying to find another project and having 3-4 potential projects to do means I have yet to make up my mind.
So in the mean time I figured I would do a small project (shouldn't take so long) based from a throw back on my Grey Knights

If you look at the demon head on the below paladin I tried a different technique, a silver base with a wash over the top. Well I found myself with a bunch of demons and I've wanted to play it out on a bigger scale.

Unfortunately this bit takes a bit due to the washes taking a bit to dry so bear with me and I'll see what I can do. First up red wash coat 1

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/05/13 21:49:12

Post by: Calibanite Lion

This is an interesting idea, some sort of molten metal daemon perhaps, animated metal golem? I have done a test marine using the inks over silver and it does look good after a few coats, mine were blue though.

Post by: Knightley

@Calibanite Lion - Yeah I saw someone do a tutorial on painting marines up this way but as I didn't have a grey wash I decided to do it another way.

@Gits - Yeah I think I might do one more coat after this, should be dark enough, we shall see

Update: second coat, getting dark enough, one more coat

Post by: Knightley

Cheers Moonie, also yes I know there is a new bloodthirster, however he costs money, this one was mine from the early 2000's

Update: so started on the terrain today, lets go back to early 2014 after I had built the table and had started on some scenery.

Basically the hills got completed and thats about it, there was some stuff that got primed, but nothing really underway. Flash forward to today, where I got a good start.

Top left you can see some LoS terrain which I found I sorely needed in games, two cups on a board, done.

Used the airbrush to put down some bronze on the statue and after it dried gave it a brown wash hit, still some little bits to do on him.
I also got some of the table house paint onto the bases of a few bits to see if it would work and tie in the rest to the table, so far so good.

bit of milliput to make craters on the ruins and put sand down on pretty much everything, that took a long time.

Open for comments by the way.

Good luck with the new job!

Post by: Knightley

Yeah, I went and brought the GW stand alone bastion as well to add to the LoS blocking terrain, will try get it done this week as well.

Update:

out came the large brush to put on a bunch of silver onto the aegis defense walls

started putting the brown paint onto the wreckage markers after priming it black.

priming the larger bits black, ran out and had to shoot out to bunnings and get a none gloss primer, will see how it goes.

You and me both, its only been over a year since I built the table.... Bad Knightley I should have done this earlier!

Update: Day 3

Used a ton of agrax earthshade to apply all the bases with some depth

Got started on two bunkers for LoS blocking and I have to say, I really like these two bits

Close up of the bunkers, some small details to paint up but they are basically done

Silver and a black wash, jobs a good un' You can also see the verdigris(spelling?) on the statue as well. Which is now done.

@AoV - Thanks, the rocket turrets were a spur of the moment thing as I had the bases from the aegis defense lines (guns used on dreadnaughts) and having had a bunch of missile launchers from IG figured what could I do

Cheers Gits, the fact most stuff has some color helps greatly with a nice looking table (if with no details)

Update: Lets get started with that smattering eh?

So we have some LoS blocking fuel tanks, a small hedgerow from old school trees, a chaos inspired defensive position and a large copse of trees - sans leaves, because everything is dying in 40k...

Oooh, it's a pretty green color! That would go perfectly with my MW!

I think the communications array is one of the coolest "bits" in the history of 40k. It's like a whole universe of grimdark wrapped up into one, small gadget...

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2015/06/10 06:03:34

Post by: Knightley

@Mad - Thanks man, I've tried to add a tiny bit of character to some set pieces and getting good vibes from the basilisk emplacement.

@Slaanesh-Devotee - Cheers mate, Still have to get you over for a game, perhaps once the table is all done? Pretty sure MarsNZ wants another crack at me

@Gits - Haha I actually did that in your honor believe it or not, still need a bit more work, but the one day I did put into it was still quite a bit. Also I agree with that comms array, the skulls, the aquila on the mast, the sheer amount of gothic oozing from it, total 40k in a nutshell

Update: more done on the bastion, still some weathering to do

Overall pic

Very interesting to see the way you've interpreted the bits on your bastion. I'll have to mock up a side-by-side shot when mine's done as I think it'll be a very interesting comparison.

Love your ruins by-the-way. All the gilt bits really make them much more interesting than the usual solid grey I see so often.
