Thanks Graven, appreciate the feedback for a scenery drawer, Currently I have all the completed stuff at the arse end of the table. I have a shelving system in the games room which will house the large stuff on the top shelf, fingers crossed I have enough space.
Update: Finished up the two from yesterday and started on some others, Also painted up 4 wrecked balls of smoke complete with weighted bases
Oh yes, I've had a game over the weekend vs a mate and it was glorious!
Update: I finished up the last ruins and ork area terrain. There is one more bit of area terrain left but I want to make it Tyranid based but need a colour scheme from my brother first. Also left are the wreckage markers for rhinos/Razorbacks/land raiders and dreadnaughts but I can take those to work any time.
Nice job on the bastion mate. Been slowly working on mine... hopefully will have it done soon. Your terrain looks fantastic. Just love the triangular building sections that fit together to make a single ruin. Great idea!
@Gits - Definitely looking forward to seeing a side by side comparison for sure! Thank you for keeping on with the motivational comments
@Graven - I do have a soft spot for mini-Bastion I will have to give him some more game time I think
@EyeamRai - Totally worth it IMO, the statue alone is tons of fun, and always looks good in bronze
@Warboss_Waaazag - Thanks man
@Mad - Cheers man, I'm down for that, heck even if its a 500 point game, I think seeing painted armies on the table will be mint! send me a PM when you're ready.
Quick battle synopsys IG vs Necrons(me) 1500 points Maelstrom mission where you can score the others objective card if you are in range. I lost first blood to him glancing my doomsday ark to death. I got his warlord however with line breaker. Notable awesome. my 5m lychgaurd with sheilds walked up the table absorbing everything thrown at them and not dropping a single man, only to get held up for 4 rounds of combat trying to smash a gaurd blob, turns out a commisar helps keep the boys in the fight. I had my 4 bases of scarabs crash into pask and do enough glances to kill him, followed up by my Triarch stalker stunning, then killing the plasma Leman Russ over 2 turns. Having two tomb spyders each on 1 wound charge an IG blob, only to lose one on overwatch and the other to the blob hitting first. I ended up winning 11 to 6 VP
Whats awesome about this one, I've put the tentacles in the right place so they can hold a dice which will denote what Obj it is
Update: got quite a bit done, I wanted a warp look to the flat area so quite a bit of mixing purples with dark colours up to light in a *hopefully* warp way, the covered with some water effect, not sure I like how it came out, I wanted it darker almost. but I think it still looks cool.
@Mad - Cheers man, I'm down for that, heck even if its a 500 point game, I think seeing painted armies on the table will be mint! send me a PM when you're ready.
I'm aiming to have the venomthropes and a flying hive tyrant painted in the coming weeks, then I'll have the main components painted up and I'll be keen for some 500-1000 point games to get back into the groove will let you know when I'm getting close. Although you keep an eye on my painting log anyway so will probably see
@Gits - Thanks man, I had the insignia blank right up until the final brush strokes as I hadn't the foggiest idea on what to do with it, then went with the lazy route of going blue
@EyeamRai - Thank you!
@Mad - Sounds solid! a couple of 500 point games shouldn't take to long to get through either, I have enough armies for you to throw your nids at so they would be different each time.
Update: starting on a commission for a mate, he supplied Arjac Rockfist, and the first thing I noticed was how bad this cast was. You have no idea how mad the cast is, bubbles, malformed areas of detail (shoulder pad and under arms) I suggested he take the model back and get a replacement but he insisted I press on.
@EyeamRai - Don't get me wrong, the painting I have no qualms about, it was the canvas I was applying it to but thank you for the kind words none the less.
@Graven - I did think about it, but as I'm all scenery'd out right now I might wait till I get those creative juice going again.
Update: another blue wash, the wings base coated and started on the staff
Cheers Graven, still feels quicker than when I did the Baneblade so I shouldn't complain eh?
Update: Wasn't sure on the wings so I gave it a blue wash, instantly regretted it but will press on instead. Added some bronze trim to the cloak and based the bone parts.
Cheer man, these things I end up going into it half-cocked and hope for the best
Update: I was going to paint each feather.... then I woke up and decided I didn't want to spend a week painting feathers, so I drybrushed the wings and did a few more details
Hmm, maybe. I gave the wings a blue wash to begin with and I suspect that my wash has almost transformed into an ink at this point, lemme know what you think about below and if it needs changing I'll get on to it.
Update: Lord of Change done, including before and after photos.
Was
Next up is a commission for the 4 new assassins from the Execution force board game. I really like these models and I suspect I might end up with the game myself.
Black primer followed by a grey downward airbrush and a black wash
Really like the paint jobs on these assassins and three of the models themselves are pretty sweet, I'm just not feeling the Culexus model.... just doesn't look as dynamic as the other three, paint job you have done is good, it's just the model.
@Graven - I totally agree, the boardgame is now in my possession and the ideas are flowing!
@EyeamRai - Thanks
@Mad - Yeah, the head was glued on facing down so you lose a lot of the energy from the model while it's looking at its feet. However it is the weakest model pose wise from the lot. Next on the board is a repaint.
Update: Well I've finally got around to stamping out the last of my old paint style, two 5 man devastator squads - Here they are as a before pic for some comparisons on where I was to where I am going to.
Spoiler:
So mistakes were made right out of the gate with the repaint, I covered all the models with some black wash, waited for that to dry over the weekend, then last night decided I'd see what I could get started on, saw that I hadn't bothered to do any mould lining so that was me for last night. Then today was starting on the layering again.
The first stage always looks like gak, but trust me they do end up looking good
They have been a constant reminder for the last 3 years of how much I have improved, so it is high time I did something about them, let the stomping commence. I suspect you've been hanging out of some more squiggle action?
Update: Another layer of grey done and got started on the grey highlighting, Also got a bit of the red done
Thanks Gits, it's good to be back into the sea of grey. I did a quick tally up of painted model vs unpainted models and I have finally moved past half way! today is a good day!
The Eversor assassin has always been one I loved from back in the day when you could use them (I don't think you can anymore can you?) great job on the paint for them all! :-)
@Cam - Thanks man, works well eh, taking aim at some high-value target.
@Mad - Why thank you, I always wonder if the light brown is too much of an extreme highlight sometimes.
@NF - Agreed, right back when he first came out I got him and the Vindicare, over time they got lost/broken so its good to get them back (seeing as I brought the assassins game) I believe you can still use him in game, but he is part of an assassins detachment.
Update: While the lighting is terrible I finished off the robes and did the second coat of grey
Cheers Gits, while painting these I get a sense of completion, finally getting rid of my old paint style leaving only photographic evidence it ever existed, its a good feeling
Update: could have sworn I took two pics, turns out I was wrong
@Cam - Cheers Look forward to more squiggles soon!
@Mad - Cheers man, much appreciated
@Mars - Awesome to hear bro, I've fired you a text.
Update: figured I'd do the Sgt as a break from heavy weapons, I needed to make a signum for him so I mushed one together from some spare bits I had in my bits box. Also phone quality pics suck.
Cheers buddy, I've been shying away from using these guys purely based off the paint scheme so now I'm working through them I plan to use them more in my games
Update: Marine done - If I could redo the backpack I would make it more compact, it sticks out the back quite a bit.
@Gits - Agreed, I did have some minor success with 4 HBdevs with the imp fists chapter tactic, but I had a few other tricks to pop tanks, these guys just targeted fire warriors and were mediocre.
@Graven - Still a bit of work to do on the dreads Also need to source some chamfered 60mm bases as well.
I think it's easy to take for granted how talented you are and how good your stuff is. You crank it out, and that's all the more impressive the way you preserve your standard across an army. Just ace.
@Graven - Thanks for the kind words mate, it means a lot.
@Gits - Tough call, If I look at doing OSL, I'll have to do it for every model in my army, while I don't have a close up of all the models, below should give you an example of what I would have to do
The top right is all the Grey Knights that would require a repaint. Going by the fact I'm now just getting to repainting these devastators after 4 years, I may hold off doing OSL on my GK's perhaps on other models?
@Mad - Cheers, I'll decline with the GKOSL, perhaps with another paint scheme.
I don't think you do knightley... painting should evolve over time. Adding a little OSL to a figure here or there shouldn't in any way diminish what you've painted already, nor does it necessitate re-doing your entire army. It just shows that your skills are progressing and that you're trying new things.
Another approach might be to only work on new techniques on special models.... HQ's, sergeants, stuff like that. Things where looking a little different just helps to convey the importance of that particular figure to the army.
@Graven - Again very true, and I also have plenty of side armies to get through (more on that later)
@Gits - That seems like a good idea, I have some chapter masters/captains/chaplains which will be painting in the future so trying some additional techniques on them sounds like a plan.
@Cam - After this guy is the Sgt for the second squad. I'll eventually fill out the rest of the squads with regular marines. But today is not that day!
So I wanted to the assassins to have a unifying look but be unique as well, so after seeing how some of the other Dakka users painted their assassins I'm going with a coloured wash for each assassin, green - Vindicare, Blue - Calexus, Red - Eversor and Purple - Calidus and have some of their wargear the same colour. The unifying part is they will all have a bone white face area and all have a roman numerals on their shoulder to denote who they are and have blue eye areas
Got started on the bases after giving all the assassins a wash.
Knightley wrote: So I wanted to the assassins to have a unifying look but be unique as well, so after seeing how some of the other Dakka users painted their assassins I'm going with a coloured wash for each assassin, green - Vindicare, Blue - Calexus, Red - Eversor and Purple - Calidus and have some of their wargear the same colour. Count me interested. Good plan, will be waiting for the next installements...
Nice job on that Assassin. Gives me some inspiration for mine (although mine isn't the cool sculpt from Execution Force). I especially like the subtle highlights on the black suit-I may just have to steal that idea!
@LT - Good point well raised, waiting to go and buy a new thin drill bit as the one I had snapped, once I have that there is a bit of a back log with barrel drilling.
@Gits - Thanks dude
@ZergSmasher - Happy to do some inspiration, although I did cheat with the black as I used an airbrush with a dark grey pointing strait down
Update: started on the Callidus got the base colours and wash done
This legitimately made me laugh, if I was any whizz at photoshop I would do this in a heart beat, so heres a challenge to those who are, photoshop a cucumber on this guys head
@Gits - Wow, I thought they looked cool, didn't know they were that cool, huge thanks Gits
@StarDrop - Oh dear, how bad do they look? What don't you like about them?
@Graven - Thank you dude, always offering your great comments, I do appreciate it.
@hk1x1 - Cheers!
@Warboss_Waaazag - Thanks
Update: So as you may know I purchased the Assassin box set, so I have all these chaos dudes just staring at me right, what you also may not know is for my birthday my very kind brother scoured Ebay for some models for me, He managed to find metal casts of Huron, Typhus and Lucius all NIB (top work from that man) soooooo....... This happened
I'll run you through what I have:
19 Cultists with a mixture of Autoguns and Close Combat types
4 Plague marines + Meltagun
4 Close combatish chaos marines
8 standard chaos marines (with Sgt, Heavy Bolter and plasma gun)
1 Scorcer
1 Full magnetised Terminator lord
1 Huron Blackheart
1 Typhus
1 Lucius
The ultimate goal here is to get the basic troops done with a base colour + wash and leave it at that (maybe pick more details up on a second round next year) and have the Characters really POP. There is a reasoning behind this and I am quickly running out of year and I still have the inquisition force to do (and I am really looking forward to that!)
Loving those assassins dude! Makes me wish I had sprung for that box set! I do have the regular versions of the Culexus and Vindicare, but they aren't quite as cool of sculpts. I hope when I do paint them that I can at least approach your level of painting!
@Gits - Jealous of chaos? certainly that's a way to fall to the dark side (you know that whole Star Wars, Fear leads to Anger, leads to Hate, leads to Cookies)
@ZergSmasher - Thanks for the comments, you may be in luck, I heard through the rumour mill that the assassins may be getting a clam pack for each one
Sweet job on Typhus. Had to look again for that 2nd little nurgling - gotta love those little extra details they put in. Great job on a gorgeous fig. Looking forward to see how Lucius turns out
@Gits - Totally, I don't think the different washes I put over the face really worked, I wanted the scars to be a bit purple and a bit red in places, I just don't think it worked that well.
@EDC - Cheers mate, Working on Huron next see below!
Hahah no worries, I didn't take it as a criticism, I figured I would give a bit of a behind the scenes dollop of information for anyone who cares to read
Excellent paint job on both of these, although I can't decide which ones creepier, the Chaos Space marine, or the little crawly, squiggly, mutant, hairless cat thing .
@NF09 - Thanks man! I used a bunch of the old range of GW paints, and once I get home I'll get the full list for you (IIRC I mixed the lightest purple with the mid range for highlights
@Gits - Cheers buddy
Update: so got the airbrush out and did a ton of armour for the Chaos Marines etc
Fully magnetised lord - I will be painting him next
Finally caught up on your thread again, and boy have you been busy! So many excellent Chaos characters! I think the best one you did is Lucius. He turned out fantastic!
Going to? that was done in WIP 1 yes, a tonne of little 2mm x 1mm magnets all over him.
Update: the brothers grimm are done as well as I can, waiting on a white Micron pen to see if I can squiggle easier, Regarding the base, I'm at a loss as how to base this Chaos Army, I really dont want to do them the same as my marines, perhaps Martian Earth? or would that be to much red? Very open to thoughts!
@LT - You should see it from my end, some of the arm holes didn't quite match up as well as I would have liked so on a couple of arms the shoulder pads are very askew
@Tipios - Cheers, Just waiting to get a new drill bit for my barrels, the one I currently have is not up to the task.
Update: Well with all the higher ups done, it's time for the low level scum, please remember these guys are only getting a very basic scheme and a wash, I *may* do highlights later on, but it wont be this year
The added bonus, these guys will be pretty quick to get through, so expect more pictures sooner.
I think these latest look great, you are getting through them mega fast, but it is because you are so exact with the paint, they still look crisp and cleanly painted. Don't get me wrong they look the filthy scum of the universe they are meant to be, but because you are so accurate they look great, even with just five colours and a wash. If I tried that they would look crap. You get away with it, jammy bugger.
Like the relatively traditional scheme as well, will look a nice brooding bunch when they are all together.
No worries Cam, Just as a heads up as well, these are all pre wash, their final picture will include the wash so you can see them all in their muddy gloriousness
They are turning out well! Remind me of a catch all not just Cultist but, I have ideas of Hive Gangers are going through my mind! Love it, not too chaos with a great subtle paint scheme.
Cheers Gits, to be honest though I don't like the chosen from DV, I guess I've painted marines for far to long, having to try blend lines to flat plates wasn't fun.
Update: Squad done
Automatically Appended Next Post: Update: Got started on some close combat marines
Those faces are quite scary looking, forgot how horrific (In a good way) they look especially in flesh tones.... I really like your color scheme, its very subtle and the red looks great! Jealous because I cannot paint red to save my life.
Hard to believe how much you've knocked out since I last was in this thread. Highlights are Huron and the magnetised termie lord/sorcerer but you've done solid work on the cultists and CSM too.
@SW - Cheers for the comments, to aid me getting through this force quickly I'll be leaving the sword bland for now. If I ever come back to the army I will give it a power sword treatment, perhaps in green.
@Gits - I know what you mean, it's supposed to be a flesh'esque skirt and the brown wash doesn't do it justice, I believe it would look much better if it were to get highlighted and some inscriptions lavished on it, just not this time round.
@Mad - Glad to have you back bro, hope your trip away was relaxing and fun! Funny you mention Tryanids, I believe 2017 will be the year of the Nid, but you'll have to stick around that long as I'm pretty confident it will be epic!
@Gits - Cheers, it's just a quick and dirty force, nothing to austere
Update: So what's next I hear you call? well for those who remember much earlier on in the blog I brought Inquisitor Hector Rex and ended up with a few henchmen to boot.
Well I wanted to expand on that force in the only way I know how, over the top amounts of models, here's the list: 39 x Inquisitorial Henchmen (assorted) 1 x Inquisitor Solomon Lok 1 x Inquisitor Valeria (custom made) 1 x Inquisitor Coteaz (custom made) 4 x Chimeras (converted 3 of them)
and just to throw some more models in to the mix 3 x Necron Tomb Blades /w Particle beamers 1 x Necron Wraith
I'm hoping I can get this all finished before Xmas, So lets get started with the Necrons first, it should be pretty quick, silver primer and a black wash to start
Making good progress there Knightley. That one section near the top of each section of bike bothers me though... looks like its where the srue attached to the figure. A little filing or GS would take care of that nicely.
@EDC - Thanks, it's a bastardised version of Garfy's Necron scheme -
Spoiler:
@Gits - Yep, good point, well raised, I tried giving it a file and made it worse :S so I'll go down the track of StarDrop's suggestion and go battle damage!
Gotta love Necrons. One reason I always wanted to do them, easy to paint. I didn't see the Inquisitor till now, he looks great, white looks phenomenal and I love his minions. Does GW sell those Henchmen mate?
@Mad - Glad to have you back bro, hope your trip away was relaxing and fun! Funny you mention Tryanids, I believe 2017 will be the year of the Nid, but you'll have to stick around that long as I'm pretty confident it will be epic!
Trip away was very fun thanks. Almost got back into the groove of life back home and should be back into painting next week. I'm sure you doing a Nid army will be epic, and I'll still be hanging around I'm sure... got some little projects planned myself once I got my main Tyranid army push done.
The group shot of your Chaos group is great, and I like the look of those Inquisition forces, looking forward to seeing more of that!
Update: So over the last 6 or so months I've been assembling a bunch of models I could use in an Inquisition force. I wanted some non-standard looking models, such as an Ork Mekboy as a counts as Jokaero, Kroot with whipcoils counts as Arco Flagellants, Dark Eldar Wyches as counts as Deathcult assassins, the list goes on, so this is a group shot of everything before I whittle them down into squads.
Four Inquisitors, Kit bashed Coteaz, kit bashed Valeria, two legit forgeworld Inquisitors as well
Henchmen
Transports - Originally I had only intended for 3 groups of inquisitors however discovering a bunch of guys from Graven and another tank means things got expanded, the 3 tank conversions are from Machinator and are amazing!
@Bigfish - Thanks mate, having an eclectic mix of guys is really what I wanted
@KernelTerror - Welcome aboard, stay tuned as I go through the muster and painting
@SW - Cheers buddy, as an addon force for the Grey Knights from 6th edition I'm a touch behind on building/painting
Update: So I realised I ended up with a few to many henchmen per inquisitor (about 10 over) so I had to make the hard call to cull the numbers, so arranged them into 'squads'
Each should have a preist or psyker, every unit will have a jokaero or counts as Jokaero, each will have a special weapon (flamer, melta, nade launcher or Plasma gun, each will have either a arco-flagellant or Crusader and filled out with lasgun/helgun acolytes
@Gits - Best I get the bug bomb out eh? can't have these pesky inquisitors start to lay eggs, they'll never die out, only way to be sure would be nuke them from orbit
@Warboss_Waaazag - Cheers, at my current painting speed either you wont have to wait long, or I'll blow out and never get them done
@SW - Stay tuned, I'll try get through them as quickly as I can!
@KernelTerror - I hadn't though to do that, its a good idea! Where were you when I was doing my planning months ago I think for now I might just have the Chimera's be painted the same (tie all the shadowy stuff the Inquisitors get up to) and just have different squad markings on them, thoughts on that?
Update: Typically what happens is I leave all the pain in the butt to paint stuff for last, however this time I figured I would get on to painting those items first! so on to the tanks...
While the lighting doesn't show it, they all had a blast of chaos black, followed up by some dark grey highlights over raised edges. got some red and silver started as well.
@KernelTerror - I hadn't though to do that, its a good idea! Where were you when I was doing my planning months ago I think for now I might just have the Chimera's be painted the same (tie all the shadowy stuff the Inquisitors get up to) and just have different squad markings on them, thoughts on that?
Makes sense, an inquisitor would probably want to avoid advertising "The guys in here will burn you for heresy" until it is too late ! But I'd say that if you have already decided some binding colors for the members of each warband, it is definitely not to late to integrate those to the tanks. In a discreet manner of course, would not want to scare off the heretics.
@EDC - Who doesn't love the inquisition? Probably heretics and xenos right?
@KT - I hadn't put much thought into the unifying colours at this stage, I wan't to be able to mix and match the teams, like put 4 Jokaero into a squad etc. but the majority of the team is white armour and black cloth, perhaps green blades, not sure what do do to tie them together, open for ideas?
Oh, of course if you want them to be able to switch teams, no reason to opt for basically different color schemes. Although, you have 4 different red and white patterns on each tank (That are coming along nicely BTW), that could be reused to identify a warband from another without being visually aggressive.
Anyway, you know best, keep it up !
@SW - Wanting to keep them in line with my Grey Knights and Gray Nights, these will be left Crisp and Black, Perhaps in 5 years I might come back and weather the entire force to make it look better, but who knows.
Update: just silvers and bronze left to do (and of course, squiggles)
Cheers WW (typing out Warboss_Waaazag and getting the right amount of A's became to much, so I'm shortening it) The whole kit is sick, Machinator did a really amazing job with them.
That is a majestic view, very well done. The finished paintjob really binds them to the inquisition, they are not simple IG transports anymore.
Hopefully we'll see the passengers soon !
