Hey guys! I've been a real long time lurker on the Dakka, but I figured that this was a good a time as any to show off my Lords of Decay army that's in progress. Basically I'm building it for adepticon 2012, so with that in mind there will be some surprises that I wont show off until adepticon has finished, seeing as many people on the intertubes go to that event...

But anyways, yeah, 2000 pts of Lords of Decay. If you don't know about them, they're a genocidal warband that splintered off of the Death Guard, they were the main insurgents in the Vraks campaign, their base of operations is this huge space hulk called "The Monolith of Woe" and they are one of the most belligerent warbands in the entire galaxy, their most famous action was a direct strike on the Sol system, where 4000 Plague Marines fought against the Custodes and Grey Knights on Pluto, and although they were slaughtered to the last man, it shook the entire Solar System's concept of being unreachable.

So here's my stuff:

First up: a Rhino:

Next, a Vindicator:

My Hell Blade air support:

and lastly for now, my newest creation, a biomechanical obliterator that has succumbed to Nurgle's Rot on his long voyage in the hold of a Lords of Decay Strike Cruiser:

So yeah, that's all for now! I'm working on another vindicator at the moment, and I'll have pics of that up soon, plus, a tutorial on how to paint the armor on a Lords of Decay vehicle, so stay tuned! I'll try to update this as frequently as I can. If you want to see WIP pics, I could do that too, or, you could visit my album at:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/core/gallery-user.jsp?u=39799
and see for yourselves

C&C appreciated!

Oblit is very nice, also nice work with the tank greenstuff work. But the real strength of these models is the weathered paint job. That peeling, flaking effect is 5 star. Great stuff.

Well it's time for an update!

The last one isn't done. I just got him to round off the unit a little while ago, and haven't had time to really go all out on this one as I was really trying to finish the other 4 up and get them ready for the table. So without further ado:

Group Shot:

Champion:

My favorite from the whole bunch:

Heavy weapons terminator, with magnetized weapon arm so that he can switch between heavy flamer, reaper, and combi melta, that is, when I build him a heavy flamer and reaper :bum:

Terminator 4, the standard bearer. In most games he won't count as having a banner as this is a termicide unit. But in apocalypse...

Termi 5, wip guy:

Tell me whatcha think, any suggestions for the last termi's torso?

Hey guys!

So I've spent the last day or 2 painting some terminators. I needed to test the scheme and see how well it works on troop sized models, and I think it came out nicely. I think I overdid it on the damage though, especially on the champ, so I'll tone that down on the next batch of models which will include the 3 remaining terminators and 14 plague marines.

Champion:

And my personal favorite of the bunch again:

rwzimmerman wrote:Very nice. I love the depth you have on the deay on the rhinos. Did you use the salt method for that?

Yes indeed! I need to use a weaker hairspray though because some of this salt will *not* come off!

Thanks for looking guys! C&C?

The terminator squad is awesome. I may (try...) to use that Obliterator idea nikolakhs, though I am sure it will not come out looking as good.

Are you going for a Terminator Lord as well?

Like you already noticed on B&C, I'm a big fan of your work. Now I'm also bothering you here since this thread deserves a lot more support than it currently has!

If you are still looking for reinforcements for your Lost and Damned forces you might take a look at these for Plague Zombies, or maybe try these ones if you want to go for a more civilian feel.

Some of these heads might be nice for your reinforcements...

By the way, I noticed the Obliterator has a yellow marine helmet strapped to it, got any story behind it?

By the way, take a look at the Obliterators Adrian Smith drew, or at least...I guess they are Obliterators.

For the other Obliterators I guess you could use whatever bits you have left over from that metal Daemon Prince, or maybe even get that newer plastic one. Or maybe get the Lord of Pestilence from Ultraforge, he would of could need some heavy converting.

Yes, eventually one will be made

Malika, thank you very much for those links! Those are ace! And the oblit artwork! that's the kind of stuff that keeps me inspired and going, thanks very much for sharing! I like those cyclops and blight heads, and those civvie zombies are something I'm really lookin into as well!

I'm actually going to buy 1 more metal DP and make him all cybernetic, and the last DP will be similar to a techmarine gone fully rogue, controlling the other 2 oblits. Since I'll be making a crashed ship as their display board, the idea is that all the obliterators were in charge of the engineering section, as at one point it was a techmarine and his retinue, but over time, they became corrupted and ended up in the state they're in now. I'll be using the drill from inquisitor Gruss on one and give him melta weapons to boot, and the other one will have major flamer action and plasma action going on, to show that they each had a certain role in the engine room.

and the yellow helmet haha, that's because there was a helmet there and it needed a color. And I used to play imperial fists so I've gotten real hang of painting yellow

Thanks guys!

Have you thought about adding weirder stuff like Raptors and such? You could do cool some twisted Raptors using the Carrion wings and some mechanical parts. Even cooler would be if you could get your hands on some 3rd edition era Raptor backpacks!

You could go into an even weirder route and also include Berzerkers, Noise Marines and Thousand Sons, but instead of actually making those units you create weird Nurgle-esque units that could simply count as the cult-units of the other Gods. Noise Marines could be Lords of Decay with weird chemical weapons.

Post by: nikolakhs

Malika, ever heard the saying "Great minds think alike?" haha.

In fact, you have listed my ideas for raptors completely right there! Eventually I want to have 2 squads, 1 squad with the old RT era backpacks, but with an extra booster added to the back. And then 1 squad with a more modern type of backpack, but mixed in with some of the sanguinary guard backpacks and some of the FW Heresy era backpacks.

For the carrion wings, that's a great idea, but the price keeps me away from it. There'd be a lot of modelling involved, more so than for the terminators, and the only way I could make it feasible would be to make a casting, which I don't have the materials or time for right now :(

Another idea I have that I want to make, is these guys:
Chaos Lord on palanquin He will be the ship's captain, it'll be mainly a show off mini.

Lords of Decay Close combat Dread This uses the parts from Krash "Thrax" Krieger from Inquisitor, and I really really love the way it looks. There's Nurgle FW Dread's all the time on ebay for the same price if not cheaper than the plastics, so I was thinking of pretty much outright copying this guy's ideas and adding a few of my own as well.

A Squad of 7 Juggernaut mounted bikers These speak for themselves. Pure awesomeness wrapped inside of a spiky and mushy package.

None of those are mine and I don't want to do mine exactly like that, but those are the inspirations I'm drawing upon for the squads. In 2 weeks time I will have 2 Dreadclaws that will be added to this army, and that is the extent of any FW support that this army will be receiving for a long long time haha.

It's a shame GW doesn't sell these bits separately anymore, you might be able to try from a second hand site or trading site?

If you're doing the Lord on a Palanquin, make the thing more biomechanical, it's more fitting with the feel of your force.

As for the Juggernauts, dont forget to have intestines hanging out of the creature's gut, being dragged along on the ground!

Kronkle! Your marines are beautiful (in only a way that a fellow nurgling could understand ) How do you do your off-white?

The tool that I use most is the trusty kebab stick, found in packs of 40 for $1.50 at any large supermarket:

Ye old trusty eye poking stick

@Malika: Yes, I've tried ebay and the like, but so many people think like me, it ends up costing the same pretty much to just buy several of them from GW and get the free shipping over $30.

The lord on palanquin will be more biomechanical, in fact, I've already started him, and the first thing that sets him apart is that he's an actual marine!

And as for intestines... well that's a given No nurgle warrior is complete if he doesnt appear on the fields of battle without the ability to lasso anyone anytime he pleases. It would only displease papa nurgle. But yes, I think I'll stick with the metal Juggers, maybe 1 or 2 plastic ones, as I prefer the sculpt over the plastic one, and there's less khorny gak to remove from it.

Hmm, I don't know how your sculpting skills are and/or how much time you have, but how about scratchbuilding the wings? Use small bits of plastic card and greenstuff to make decaying biomechanical wings.

By the way, what colour will you be painting the visors of the marines? In the official scheme from FW they were red. However, the armor in those pictures is also more yellowish, making the red visors a nice contrast. In your case the armour is already kind of rust/red/pink like, red might not work that well, will you deviate and go for blue?

Scratchbuilding ...the ...wings... I um... really really don't want to do that hahaha, that is just sooooo much more work than I'd care to do at the moment. My opinion on this may change, but after putting in more than 6 hours per terminator in conversion and painting, I really really really don't want to repeat the same process for a unit of raptors. In fact my opinion will probably switch on this as time goes by, but I won't get too distracted building raptors, chosen, possessed, bikers, or any lords over the next several months.

First and foremost I must finish my tourney army and the display board, that's priority #1. I will be finishing my Hell Talon that I started 6 months ago, I will be painting up 2 Dreadclaws that will arrive in a week or 2, and I hope that that'll be the extent of my distractions for the time being. If I can find a cheap metal jugger online or locally, I'll buy it and play around slowly, but I won't be making a full unit for a while.

The visors! I will be making the visors blue, yes. Just like the rest of the lenses in my army, I much prefer the blue over red, and plus, I can use blue for headlights, gems, buttons, eyes, etc. , where the red can't be used everywhere. With the amount of work that goes into these guys, any way I can save myself some time really helps.

In February I bought a Hell Talon off of a seller on ebay that was getting rid of his entire collection, and boy did I get a good deal on this model. I decided that this guy wouldn't fit in with anything I had at the moment, and that I wanted something special and one of a kind. Low and behold, so many months later, I have started painting this beastie, and boy do I have an interesting ride ahead.

This guy is supposed to embody daemonic possession. The trim is nowhere near being done yet, in the end it will looked like cracked marble. He is supposed to come off as serpentine, whilst at the same time being bound tight within the confines of the Hell Talon by a spiked cage. At the same time, some of his scales have fallen off leaving a bloody chunk under them. This effect needs a little more work on my part, but I'll figure it out as I go. Everything on this plane has been done by hand, including basecoats and every single one of those scales. Like I said, I have a long ride ahead.

That's all for now folks!

@Kronkle: Yes, everything is done with a brush. I know no other way, it's painstaking, sure, but I paint to relax, so it gives me more time to do just that. I was referring to the off white of your tanks, I think it looks great! Next time I paint the Hell Talon I'll take some pics of each step. At the moment though, I just picked up re-supplies for the painting on my Plague Marines, so I think I'm going to finish the 2 squads, and then get back to the Talon.

Anyways. To todays update! My Rhinos have had a bad steak of blowing to smithereens when they're hit, instead of just becoming wrecks. And I've lost a good total of plague marines in the process, which is weird. But anyways, i wanted to make some markers that are better than a random looking GW crater, or a piece of paper that represented dangerous terrain, so I went ahead and make some dangerous terrain that had the same footprint as a Rhino, and I have 2 more of these and 2 Vindicator sized bases waiting to be made into scrapyards as well. I want to build some flame columns to add to this as well, but only when the troops have been removed from it, because this is just big enough for 10 troops to balance on gently and fit on the base.

Rhino 1 Marker:

Rhino 2 Marker:

So that's the update for now! I finally found a new shade of blue to be able to get my paint scheme up and running again, the paint gremlins dried my old one out, so I should have some plague marines finished sometime soon to add to the army!

Stay tuned for more!

Also, does anyone know why the Dakka uploader turned my images sideways, and is there a way to undo this?

Yes I did, and I learned quite quickly 2 things: don't buy scented hairspray, and the ratings go up to 4 apparently, and I used 4, which requires some real tough love to remove all the salt, but gets great results in my opinion.

Flaming Troll wrote:Good job on the vehicles, unlike most other Nurgle themed vehicles they don't look absurd.

Thank you, this is one of the main things I'm going for, a sort of minimalist Nurgle themed vehicle, I don't want anything that's absurd, the most absurd thing will be my Hell Talon, and even then...

Thanks I try and stay away from the traditional green because to be honest, I have difficulty staying interested while painting it, and it looks so bland when applied to a large amount of models. I wanted an army that would just *pop* when you saw it placed across the table from you, one where it shows just how much the player thinks of his stuff, and those 4 plague marines you just killed or that 1 Rhino that exploded was a week's worth of love and toil. I want an army that not only looks awesome and will get me painting points to boot but also shows just how much I value them.

schank23 wrote: Those are amazing. Great conversions and great paint jobs.

Thank you for the kind words

kestral wrote:+1 for the "non green" paint scheme. Outstanding work all around. I like the bellringer sticking out of the Rhino a great deal.

I love the pestigors and wish GW never stopped producing them. When I start to add mutants and traitor guard to accompany this army, I want to include as many pestigors as possible, I just love the models!

Thanks for looking!

Any ideas or suggestions for future additions and or mutations and or models? My imagination only goes so far...

I like your Nurgle style and I don't like Nurgle in general so that's saying a lot... your Obliterator is very cool. I think it is the effect of those very well painted lenses combined with the three points of color, yellow, blue and red to make a strong color combo, rather than having a face as a focal point. Rather than just using Nurgle green.

If I were you I would think about using some liquid effects to make it look like joints are oozing. I know I could do a lot even with my hot glue gun to get some slimey, liquid effects (not too much though). Or even just joints that are oozing black oil. Possibly using glazes, water effects, and experiment with different textures, not just colors.

The paint peeling effect is very nice, the best I've seen for the paint actually peeling off, but the placement seems too random and even to me. I would expect the paint to be coming off more in more well used areas of the tank or more diseased blotches of it. Instead, is it just evenly pockmarked everywhere.

Cheers!

Cheers!

The liquid effects is a good one! I like it! I may do some variation of that once everything is painted and based. This army will be based on a muddy battlefield with some slushy snow here and there, as if the snow has just begun, so some oozing might fit right in with this whole army! As for the paint peeling, I agree with you 100%. When I do the salt method I can't really control it too well, but, I have to patch up the parts that were missed after all's been said and done with dark brown paint, so in the future, on all my vehicles, areas around doors and windows and hatches will be flakier. I like the haphazard pattern of the flakes, because just like in reality, you can't 100% predict the weakest spots in a coat of paint, and sometimes a seemingly random spot starts to rust.

Thank you! Patience is a new skill I learned! My wargaming budget was drastically reduced these last couple years, and this is the one way that I keep myself sane and busy, so everything I do, I try and get the most out of it. I'm most definitely not a production line guy for my own stuff, I can do production lines, but this army doesn't lend itself to that kind of style.

Thanks! I'll have an update for you soon, with forgeworldey goodness!

Oh nice. I see that when people play around with Nurgle themes they all go crazy with greenstuff, and colors especially green and brown and rusty colors, but they don't play around with textures as much as they could. For instance combining rusty, scratchy textures with glossy, oozing textures, and cobweb-like mold growth. Personally I would play with a hot glue gun and see what different effects I could get. It's so cheap and easy. I might still try that on my chaos spawn even though I am not a nurgle guy.

I see what you are saying about the paint flakes. The salt method is impressing me more than the sponge method at the moment (but only for like tanks and vehicles), it also seems easier than painting flakey bits on, plus you get that actual texture. Did you try hairspray method too?

More updates!

Very badass army you got there, Nik! I've been interested in a Nurgle army for the very reasons you've got here: nasty, disgusting, evil units that are extremely weathered and with no rigid rules. It's pure creativity, whatever you want to do. The modelling you've done here is exceptional, and your army will certainly be an impressive site on the table.

How do nurgle armies fare in the game? Are they expensive points wise?

Well I'm still tinkering around. The sponge method I use for troops as there's no way to maintain details on such a small area with that many steps. I also use it when I forget to salt an area, like I did on one of the wings of my dreadclaw.

23pts/model, or a full squad of 7 for 196pts means that yes, they're expensive. They're elite troops that are all but immune to small weapons fire and can take a whole boatload of punishment. But they need to be used skillfully as there's not many of them. I've fared pretty well with them, the main idea is to have lots of units that can synergistically combine together to create the Perfect wedge.

Hey guys! Update time!

So I've finished my dreadclaw, and I've gotten a game in with it as well. It did pretty well, delivering a squad of 10 PM right where they were needed, and looked good to boot :squigdrunk:

So here's some pics of it!

Legs retracted position, the blue dot shows the "front" of the dreadclaw.

Here's the top angle, with the 9 thrusters:

And with the legs open position, ready to poop out a squad of troops right where they're needed to assault. I need to get berserkers one day...

detail shot of retro-thrusters:

So that's that for now! Now that one's done, I'll slowly start work on the other, but for now, I must finish troops and termi's first!

C&C?

Till next time!

[edit] I would have uploaded this to the Dakka gallery but all the pictures are turned sideways

Thank you for all the kind words! I have taken a little while off to get acclimated with the new semester at Uni, but now that I'm in the swing of things and know my schedule, I have time for minis again ever so often!

Anyways! To today's update! So I finished adding tracks to the new leman russ for my traitor guard, and I magnetized the sponsons as well, so I figured it was a good time to post pics of this thing. I want to make it look bashed up, but not too extreme. Like it's been through an extremely harsh combat and is still rumbling forward, like any good nurgle creation. I didn't modify the chassis or turret really, as I like the model as it comes. I did swap out the hull lascannon for one from a weapons team though, as I think the one that comes with the tank is quite ugly.

Pics!

And when the side sponsons are destroyed, this is what it'll look like:

C&C? Any suggestions of things I should add to this before painting starts?

Terminators and troops to come soon!

Holy crap it's been a long time since updates.

Only some WIP's this time around.

First up is an Obliterator, number 2 of 3. He is the boss of the other two, and as such, has a face. The other 2 will look more like mechanical automatons. He is supposed to look like a Techmarine that has been in the warp for waaaay too damn long, and has over the millennia succumbed to Nurgle's embrace, whilst helping the Dark Mechanicus and the Lords of Decay with any of their mechanical needs. His leg needs to be finished, it'll either be a mechanical leg, or I'll add a mutated foot like the other oblit. Notice this guy has a close combat attachment and claws, along with a lascannon, he is kind of the "all arounder" to the group, with the other completed one being all long range, and the next one will be all close ranged weapons.

Scale shot:

Next up is a plasma squad. They need to have the rust effect done, and their skin and all accessories need finishing as well. Also the champion needs to be finished, but I need more magnetized arms so that all the champs can have different wargear options.

Combat pose:

Lastly for now we have a Rhino I've built. It's supposed to show a nurgling infestation inside of it, and I really like the nurgling looking forward on the front left side. This will carry my squad of FW torso marines. This rhino is on stage 1 of painting, it'll get a dark brown coat over this, varnish, salt method, re-spraying of grey, and then the real painting shall commence.

That's all for now!

Thanks for the responses!

@Cadaver: Your nurgle stuff is brilliant, it's one of the first armies I liked over at Papanurgle!

@LordofMuck: yeah, I'll try and get more wip's in as I go along, there sure are plenty of them!

@Linked: I place a rolled out cylinder of green stuff, and then press it down uniformly so that it shapes an approximate line, making sure that it's not raised in parts or bumpy or leaving gaps with the surrounding surfaces. Then I let it dry, and the next day, take an xacto knife to it to make the edges straight, and then sand down the flat part to get that sharp angle

It's time for a little update!

First off, here's squad 3 of 4, bought, assembled, and ready for painting. Sorry for the blurriness.

I got lazy and just went and bought a squad instead of converting it

Secondly, I'm starting a little Dark Mechanicus side project to go along with the obliterators that I've built up for this army. Here's the first gun servitor:

I've got ideas for a whole squad of servitors, and that one above will need some work to make him a little chaos-ey. They already feel so dark, I don't want to go too overboard.

Well here we are again! I bring November goodies with me...

Let me just get this guy out of the way: I made a banner bearer for that last unit of plague marines:

Well I've started construction on my crashed ship. I've started with the engine compartment, as I figure it'll be the hardest part to do correctly. So far, the dimensions are 12" long by 10" wide by 4" tall, with an eventual height of 5". There is a lot of work left to be done on this bad boy. So far, I've only built the skeleton, placed the approximate location of the engine bloc and the secondary thruster plasma feeds, and some of the basic body work. Keep in mind that half the ship is buried in mud, so this is the upper half of it sticking out. The roof will be removable, and there is much detail work left to do, including the main thruster, all of the pipes, consoles, fuel, and the damage, especially the damage!

size comp:

sorry for the bad pic:

engine bloc:

nuclear fuel rods:

And now for something completely different!

The Captain of the crashed ship atop his captain's chair. In game, he will be a chaos lord with a daemon weapon on palanquin. He is hard wired into his chair, as he controls the ship, and he was wrenched out of it to go and inspect the damage on his own. He is carried aloft by 3 dark mechanicus servitors, as he physically cannot be removed from his chair anymore. He has become a bloated, pus filled, morbid creature, which has formed some daemonic characteristics over the millenia.

C&C appreciated!

It is looking very promising too, the ship engine compartment.

Hey guys! It's time for..... an update! Yeah!

Well first things first, I got tired of using random dice and coins and junk for objective markers. So I went and made myself a pair to go with my army.2 Nurglings holding their objective, a vat of orange toxic goo. Oops he opened the spigot. Silly nurgling, the orange goo isn't for you:

Bored nurgling sitting in a barrelfull of maggots guarding some green toxic goo:

Together:

I also finally finished my Hell Blade's base:

Lastly! The Rhino's I've been working on. So funny story right, I got through the entire paintjob, and then realized that the color was off. Turns out I forgot to add 1 drop of blue along the way, and it came out too light. The damage came out well, but the color didn't come out anything like what I wanted. These 2 are pretty easy to spot how different they are from the others.I like this one:

I really don't like this one:

Well that's all for now, more stuff later this month!

Time for an update, it's only been... forever...

Valdor Tank Hunter!

There's a lot of work left to do on this guy, with the painting of the commander, to the painting of the energy source that I completely forgot to paint on the left side. I need ideas for what kind of freehand nurgle to do on this thing!

Land Raider

I'm really really pleased with the freehand Nurgle icon on the right side. The weathering on this guy is done, but again, I forgot to weather the lascannons on the right side (mainly because because I forgot to magnetize them like the other side was.) The horns and all of the small details still need to be finished.

Lastly, I leave you with what I'm working on now: A daemon prince, and a superheavy to deal loads of damage:

That's all for now folks! C&C, suggestions, everything is appreciated! I'll try to update more often than once in 4 months!

Yeah yeah it's been forever I know. Haven't had time really, plus I lost inspiration a while back in the midst of drowning in coursework. Nonetheless, here is what I've been working on: I've built and converted a close quarters monstrosity, the Stormsword, and I've almost finished 2 more Hell Blades for air support.

First up, stormsword. Here is the rust undercoat that'll show through as pockmarks later, I chose not to go with oil colors this time around as they get quite thick.

A lot of stuff is covered up at this stage, but as it gets painted it'll show more. There are cables coming out from damage, 3 nurglings, organic bits, and a bunch of little pockmarks everywhere. I didn't want to go overboard on this tank, as it already cost me so much, those treads are from Blood and Skulls industry on eBay and they're like $20 for both sides. All in all this tank, in materials, should cost me near $150 >_> Plus, as a centerpiece, it needs to show off the theme of the army, and that theme isn't overboard bio-nurgle.

Now for the Hell Blades, these are PIP as of now, with cockpit and details needing done. Plus bases too.

The red stripes identifying them as 2nd squadron came out awesomely I think, I'm really happy with these:

Well that's all for now, C&C, suggestions, etc?

What should be painted and/or built after these are completed? The options are: 2 squads of PM, 1 Dreadnought, Dreadclaw, chaos lord

-Nikolakhs

Well, the dreadnought is in the mail, so until that arrives, I decided to assemble a bunch of stuff I had lying around, and start working on projects that were on the backburner. Here's where I'm at for today: Dreadclaw assembled (without all the fins and claws), Malcador Defender mostly assembled (needs conversions).

Also, I remembered why I didn't want to assemble this second Dreadclaw. These damn joints on the claws are the devil, they snap too easy so they must be pinned heavily, and these pins are so damn hard to put down in a straight line. Greenstuffing is almost mandatory so that it doesnt look silly.

Small update, that's all for now,

Here is this weekend's progress, I got work done on the stormsword with the Salt layer and 2 layers of paint on that, I got a layer of paint on my Leman Russ, I added some damage to the Malc, and finally finally some work on the crashed spaceship. So without further ado:

Here's an example of a damaged segment on the malc, I wanted to make it clear just how thick the armor on this tank is so I made it a little deeper than a normal tank.

Lastly, the crashed ship has been on the backburner for months, but I finally put some work into it. There have been panels added, plumbing, the plasma reactor has been finished, and this thing is on track to be done soon. The remaining parts to be done are the roof, the rivets everywhere, general wiring, and then greenstuffing to nurglify it up a bit.

And the icing on the cake, it really needed this on the side:

Til next time!

Nice work Nikolakhs.
You and i have very similar takes on Nurgle. I too think that sometimes there is way to much crazyness going on with some of the nurgle vehicles. Yours have a toned down appearance which is really nice. Love the salt weathering too. I am warming up to doing a bunch of sponge weathering on my nurgle vehicles as well.

Where did some of your nurglings come from. The one on your objective marker with the toxic orange goo running out on its head looks different from the ones i have. are where is the figure on the deck of your superheavy from. I dont recognize that one either.

So awesome. Still think those are the best converted CSM Terminators. Excellent work!

Thanks for the replies,

The nurglings on the tank are from maxmini, the "lesser plague demons" I'm pretty sure they're called. I was dubious about their quality at first but I was blown away by how much cooler than the GW nurglings they are. The nurgling on the objective marker I *think* is from the epidemius kit, but I honestly don't remember.

And I'm planning on making more terminators soon, keep an eye out in the upcoming months

Here's today's progress:

I finished the damage on the main areas of the armor plate. There is still a lot of work to be done, and I started on the metal areas, but there is rusting to be done on those, the cracks in the armor plates need to be darkened, and overall weather damage and staining still needs to be done. Also the nurglings need painted, the daemonic parts need painted, and all other details as well!

Ugh. Almost forgot about the rivets. All of those rivets...

It has been... a while since I've updated this thread. I've gotten a lot of stuff done since then, but today I'm only gonna update the most recent stuff. Everything else is in my personal gallery. I've been busy these last few days! I decided to base all of my army (except the 40mm bases, I got tired and didn't get to them.) Also, to finish assembling all of my superheavies, and to build some terrain for the hell of it. So, here's some pics of all of that work:

This pic includes 4 squads worth of bases out of the total 7, 3 blight drones, 2 hell blades, 3 havocs that are built, and 2 characters. Give or take 1500pts of stuff.

I got sent an extra 2 right sides to one of the malcadors. Don't know what to do with it, so it's terrain:

Next, the Praetor missile tanks I've been working on. I ran out of undercoat spray after the 1 :sniff: They've both been upgraded with lascannons, just in case any vehicles get close to them.

I finished assembling the Malcador, and started to undercoat it when the spray paint can really just stopped doing it's job. Went and bought 2 more cans to prime everything in the next week. I magnetized the demolisher cannon as it *will* be the first weapon removed when my opponents get to choose. :hate:

Lastly, I've been working on some berzerkers to add to this army, maybe a little Khornate contingent to mix things up a bit. I always liked the look of those blood slaughterer things, and you need to have zerks in your army to take them. So I'm thinking of adding around 1k of a Khornate element to this army. They won't be painted in Red and Brass, but they won't have chipped armour either. I'll figure something out.

Well that's all for now, I'm gonna have a lot of stuff to do soon, there is a large apoc game coming up in January that I'll be partly hosting, and I want to bring at least 5k points with me.

Thanks for the praise

Real life gets in the way sometimes, I had a tough semester and lots of work, never had enough time to actually work on anything 40k related. This army should have been done a long time ago, but again, real life interferes. Now, I think I'll be able to get in routine updates as I get them done, but once in 6 months is a bit extreme, I agree.

Hey y'all!

So I'm pretty much done with my crashed ship, all that's left to do is to make the base it'll rest on with the long skid mark from where it dragged across the battlefield before coming to a halt. The top is removable so that it can be used as functional terrain in-game, and the inside has enough room to get squad vs squad combat. If need be, the top is angled at a small enough angle where squads can fight it out on the surface (assuming they don't get impaled by the spikes.) The last 2 things that'll be done with this is adding a lascannon sponson on the top piece, because even a dropship would have some basic defenses, and to take 2 shot glasses and make those side engines next to the main one. Next: to start work on the middle third; that includes the bridge, and troop compartments.

Also I don't remember if I posted this guy yet:

He's my tall, fat sorcerer

Lastly, I've got some paint on that terrain that I'd built and posted last time. These just need weathering and they'll be good to go, along with some water effects and snow.

Thanks for looking!

So... hi. Instead of putting off life in order to make my armies better, I went and got myself a college degree! So you're looking at a recent graduate with degrees in Chemistry and Physiology, woohoo! That being said, I have managed to do a little work over the last two years, so I wanted to share.

Anyways, I wanted to show y'all some goodies! Let's start with my favorite, my scratchbuilt Defiler. This guy was heavily inspired by a slaughterfiend that was made on papanurgle.com, I can't remember the guy who did it, but I promised him I'd copy the design. And I did. I'll toot my own horn here though and say that I think I improved it! This son of a bitch took so long to convert, and I forgot to take any pictures of the process. All of the cables are greenstuff, as are the pus sacs. This whole model weighs like half a pound thanks to greenstuff! I armed it with a battle cannon, twin-linked heavy flamers (the little flamer claws) and a reaper autocannon.

...Next! Almost done with my Malcador Defender that I picked up in 2011. It sat unworked for a long time, I actually really hate this model... The whole thing went together so badly, and heavy bolters are just... meh. But here it is:

...Next! I have some details like lenses to finish painting on this Russ, but other than that it's done. I sometimes get bored of the last little details and just forget about them, it's a recurring trend among lots of my minis. It's a bad habit. But here's the tank, I really like this one. I magnetized the sponsons in case they are destroyed, and the underlying meshwork implies that that part of the armor has been breached. I tried to keep an armored continuity with all of my vehicles, and that is where the red and white striped parts come in. I wanted all the vehicles to show that they belonged in one squadron or another, and I think it worked out!

Healthy:

Damaged:

...Next, I have the Twins: two sorcerers that used to see extensive use in my army. The one is short and dark, the other is tall and albino. Squatty is done, the tall guy is not. I wanted to make two models out of the one plastic kit, I don't like paying GW prices and only getting one thing out of them. It's nurgle for christs sake.

Squatty:

Lanky:

So next we have the Great Unclean one that I was working on. This is the old Ultraforge GUO, one of the better sculpts out there in my opinion. My end goal was to have 7 different GUO's. Now I'm not so sure about that, but I think it's still a good goal, as there are 7 companies that make 7 really good GUO's.

Let's see... next is my Greater Spined Beast / Big Fackin Spawn that I've been putting together. When I saw this kit for fantasy, I just had to buy it. I didn't know what to do with it, but my creative instincts kicked in. Once he's done he'll be a fully automated Dark Mechanicus construct, fully integrated into some of the darker aspects of this army:

Next is a conversion that I loved before I royally screwed it up and lost all motivation to fix it. I tried my hand at extensive source lighting, and failed epically. This is supposed to be a fully biomechanical Dark Mechanicus construct, as I actually really hate the original Slaughterfiend model. The tail was a bitch and a half to sculpt, but it got done. As you can see, the cannons are magnetized and removable, with the future option of making it into a maulerfiend. I wanted it to look as much like DOG from Half Life 3 as possible but without losing its own character. So now I just need to redo the OSL on it and pretend that never happened. So please, overlook the really crappy OSL on the carapace, try to imagine it without.

Next I've got some terrain that I was working on in my last post here. I finished it all up, and it's just been sitting here. So here it is all done, my next goal is to make a gaming table:

Lastly, yes lastly: a heavy weapons terminator. I wanted to make a truly unique model, similar to the rest of my terminators. I didn't want to settle for just any normal reaper-carrying termi, I wanted him to be on his way towards becoming a real Obliterator, fully possessed by nurgle. Svartmetall really inspired this WIP, I hope you like it:

...So. That's all for now. Sorry it's been so long, but hopefully this makes up for it? Hope to see more of you around!

Excellent work on the tanks and the termies, particularly finding a paint scheme which makes the accretions on the obliterator models look like filth and avoids the "chewing-gum" look those parts can have.

Yeah, honestly the whole "nurgle" style where you choose a paint scheme and then try to make the chaotic growth bits look as bizarre as possible on it never appealed to me. I've seen it on so many armies where the chaotic growths clash horribly with the paint style, and I don't understand why people do it that way. I'm happy you appreciate it though!

Yo, peeps.

So I've found myself with some free time lately due to a bout of unemployment, and what's a good nurgling to do but to get to all those unfinished projects that he has lying around? Well, if you're me, you start new ones! So here's an update with some WIP's of some dark mechanicus that I want to bring to my collection, as well as the last shot of the Greater Chaos Spawn that I made before he starts getting painted. Sorry for the gakky pics, I took them in a hurry.

Without further ado, here's the unit of 20 Dark Mechanicus menials / acolytes that I built. I have no idea what these would play as in a game, I built them because I wanted to. Maybe cultists? Who knows.

I was going to give them all purpose-made power claws, but wow they are a pain in the ass to built. I also figured that they'd be useless if none of them had fine motor skills, so many are just given a rusty blade to hold on to. All the Dark Mechanicus will be painted in schemes to complement the Lords of Decay army, as I figure if they're traveling together they probably share some of the same rags and some of the same Nurgley beliefs.

And here's the Greater Spawn, with almost all the greenstuffing done. There's some details left to do still, but those'll get done tonight. So it's on to painting!

That's all for now,
-Nikolakhs

Because to be quite honest I'm the slowest painter and converter ever, this project has been ongoing for 4 years now and I feel like I've barely made any progress. I'm glad you found me though, I hope that I can give you ideas for your own stuff as time goes on!

So.... I've been busy. I've had Netflix's Daredevil playing in the background while I've been painting, and I've gotten some good work done.

First things first, apologies for the gak pictures but they're taken with an iPhone as that's the best I have at the moment. So the first pic is the test model for painting the little Dark Mechanicus menials. I was considering going a normal bone skull look, but I figured a dark look with glowing eyes makes them look like little daemonic helpers so that's the route I went. I don't think I'm going to rust up their weapons, but I will make them fairly oily. I want them to look distinctively different from the rest of the models in my army, but as I add more of the buggers I'll make them in different stages of corruption, as the infections of nurgle are a spectrum rather than a black and white deal. So here's the test, don't mind the unpainted skull on his vest. Also, his feet will be covered in mud so that's why I didn't care to highlight the features.

Thoughts on ways to take this? Comments, suggestions, anything are appreciated. I'm more interested in thematic ideas for how to approach the idea of "Dark Mechanicus assisting a nurgle warband" but slowly becoming part of them, like, what elements would convey this?

So next up are some plague zombies / traitor guardsmen. The idea when making them was that a contingent of the IG that the Lords of Decay are fighting have switched sides, died, or have been converted over to the forces of Nurgle. I want to be able to play these guys as plague zombies, cultists, or regular IG so I've modeled them appropriately.

Again, sorry for the gakky pics but here's a closeup of one of the grenadiers and a group shot of the backs of some of the guys whose armor has fallen or been ripped off.

So I painted their armor green to go in with the theme of a normal IG camo scheme. Keep in mind all of the terrain and stuff posted earlier with the green tank hulls, muddy terrain, and silver trinkets. So here's the question: keep the green and add IG insignias and iconography, or change it to a muted red with nurgle and chaos symbols to suit the rest of my army? The pros of keeping the green are that it shows their origins, which is cool. The cons are that it doesn't fit in with the rest of my army, as they look quite alien when placed next to the rest of my troops with their muted reds and browns. The pros of the red is that it's better able to show that these are the "bad guys" so to say and it fits in with my army. However, I can't thematically make sense why a bunch of plague zombies would have a different colored armor than the troops that they were in a different life, it's not like they have the technical skills to paint their armor? I know it's getting stuck up on details, but this whole army is made or broken by details. So what are your thoughts?

That's all for now!

I say keep the green. It'll help differentiate them on the board. It'll also strike fear into the hearts of your enemies.

I love the heads on those guys, really remind me of zombies in classic b movies.
