What weapons would you choose for survival and zombie hunting fun?! This is using current technology, not 40k gear! Assume unlimited ammunition. You can be inventive as you like, but stick to real world objects and you have to be able to reasonably carry it all. What would you choose???

I would go with a baseball bat for bludgeoning zombies in close quarters, a AA-12 combat shotgun as my primary weapon, and a Glock 21 for backup.

Have at it!

What type of zombies are we talking about?

Shambling slowpokes ala world war z/ The walking dead who are attracted to noise and can smell the alive, or 'rage' zombies ala 28 days later?

In Australia wherfirearms are hard to come by.

1: Good running shoes so I can run away
2: Baseball bat
3: If I found a rifle it would be a .22 calibre rifle as there are still a few around.

Rage " Zombies" aren't "real" zombies, they're just infected humans, so you don't have to get a head shot to kill them and anti-personal weapons will be much more affective against them...blow a rage "zombie" in half..it dies, blow a Romero zombie in half...you just made a "dragger".

Rage zombies? I like. Remington 700P chambered in .308, in a bag I can easily carry on my back. AR-15 for general mucking about. And the .45 for the "OHNOZOMBIEINMUHFACE" moment that always happens when you blindly walk into a house thinking everything is hunky-dory.

Well , if the "zombies" in question are " rage zombies" then they would drown underwater, remember "rage zombies" aren't walking dead....they're just infected humans....so they would still require oxygen.

A .40 pistol with hollowpoint rounds if possible, a medium-sized axe for chopping heads, and an AR-15/57 with plenty of rubber bands for full-auto fire.

But then, if it's winter, the zombies would be frozen corpsicles anyway, being that I live in Alaska.

If a zombie apocalypse occurs, and your primary weapon is an AR pattern rifle, there are going to be plenty of burst/auto lowers laying around. Keep the rubber bands to help secure your bandaids or something.

Gimme my LE6940 and G35, my plate carrier, and far more importantly, a functioning off-road vehicle with some extra gas. I'm going to the desert with a enough supplies to last till the zombies starve.

In all seriousness, if the dead begin to walk, I've got guns, a car, ammo, and I'm taking them all to my uncle's hunting lodge in Alabama. Its the most remote place I have access to and in case of emergency there will be guns covering all sides!

Yes please - especially with unlimited ammo

Against rage zombies - perhaps some kind of AFV - protection and hiding from zombies, enough space (kinda) to store food and so on for a couple of months or so, and possibly remote control weapons so you can shoot without being exposed if you get swamped. That way I can hopefully outlast the rage virus humans.

@ Dragearen: thank you. The above is the product of about 8 years worth of careful planning and collecting.

@ KingCracker: Indeed. What I don't have pictured, is my Dillon progressive reloading setup. Depending on the load, I can pump out around 600-1000 rounds and hour. Some take much more time then others due to quality control and setup.

Also which range? I have access to 3 within a 30-40 min drive from me. My one friend has a pistol/short range out to 100 yrds with a covered shooting shack for year round access. My other friend has what he calls his carbine range... out to 300 yards. And then there is the "public" range that someone built in the middle of the woods in no mans land that goes up a hill out to 500 yards.

Your sidearm and CC weapon are fine, but IMO Plate Armor ( which I assume is what you mean by " suit of armor") would be far to cumbersome and drastically limit your mobility, while not offering as much protection as you may believe...
It would be far to easy to find oneself knocked over while wearing heavy plate and overwhelmed by a horde of hungry zombies...who through sheer persaverance would eventuly pull you apart.

Yeah...uh...I'm with jp
Unlimited ammo...huh I'd go with an Aug or a military grade SCAR-H...for range give me an old fashioned kar with a scope (yeah its a bolt action but it still put huge holes through modern aircraft. Close up? 9mm or pref several .45s (at least 4 and a speed reloader as that could take too long). Hand to hand...simple piece of wood shaped into a bat...not one of the MLB ones as they break to easy. I'm afraid an edged instrument I wouldn't be able to pull out of the zombie in time to get to the next where as a bat does blunt trauma and glances off.

... Mausers got style, I'll give you that my friend...
But even for " ordinary" home invaders..I'll go with the .12 Gauge, massive stopping power, low chance of " over-penetrating" and hitting friendlies/innocents and by staggering your loads (.00 Buck/00 Buck/Slug/Slug..etc) you can " Multi-task".

The Scar is great, but for a modern firearm shooting a tiny round (5.56) it is a heavy gun. If I'm going to lug a heavy gun around, I'm going to grab my M1 where I know I can shoot a rager from 1,000 yards out if need be.

Zombie apocalypse! @ 2011/08/11 19:04:05

Post by: jp400

Standard Scar issue is 5.56.

The Heavy (H) version is 7.62 NATO, but isn't as common thus harder to get.

Besides, if you want a proven 7.62 battle rifle, be a man and use a M1A in a socom or bull pup configuration.

Also, 308 is a heavy round. The last thing you want are big ol mags sticking off your guns to get snagged on things. Standard issue mags and plenty of practice for smooth reloading will get you further in the long run then an extended mag.

True...my paultry little ammo cache ( perhaps 2,000+ rounds various) would scarcely be enough for the journey plus the first week of sustained contact, even factoring in going semi-auto and careful targeting...

If we are talking a global pandemic of infected ragers running around, then even I would be hard pressed with ammo logistics.

Which is why isolation is another key feature often overlooked in a situation such as this.

Well, in the case of "infected Rage zombies"...were really looking at a situation in which we only have to hold out for a matter of months...which I believe is very possiable.
In the case of actual "Zombies" ( the walking dead)...we're looking at years .

If I really had to choose weapons, I'd probably stick with these three,
-remington 870 (stopping power)
-ak47 (very easy to be maintained rifle, bit heavy though)
and a trench spike for back-up

The Ak-47 is not what I would call inaccurate...not by a damn sight, perhaps on full auto ( but then in untrained hands most weapons on full auto are), but in semi-auto the AK can hold a very nice grouping, not to mention it's a very rugged and dependable weapon.

meh,ive seen a guy hip fire a M14 or whatever (sory,my gun knowledge is very rusty used to know all kinds of gak...) and got a very good grouping. the guy then used a AK 47 shoulder fireing in bursts and the shots were going in in a line pattern and was way less accurate. ive seen lots of simular stuff. however ive also seen the AK get striped and put back together faster and its definatly looks and seems more reliable. i just dont like it.

....

The M14 is a dang high powered sniper rifle designed from the ground up to put tight groups down range at around 1,000 yards. It also shoots the 7.62 Nato round. (308 Winchester) Big, BIG difference from the 7.62x39 round the Ak47 uses.

7.62 Nato Top, 7.62x39 Bottom

EDIT: wait, its right. the M16 is its original burst variant if i remember correctly too.

Zombie apocalypse! @ 2011/08/12 03:54:31

Post by: jp400

The M16 Shoots 5.56 and can be a tack driver. It is more accurate then a basic Ak47, however, when it comes to field performance it is what we call a "princess".

Basically, you have to paper it to make sure it works every time you pull the trigger. The barrel star chamber and bolt need to be cleaned, all the moving parts need to be lubed just right, a little mud or dirt or cold temperatures and she will throw a fit. ect ect.

The ak47 is what we call a "dirty girl"... I think you get the idea. After all, their is a reason why you only see an Ak and not an AR in my collection.

Zombie apocalypse! @ 2011/08/12 04:02:21

Post by: Karon

And, because these are rage zombies, you won't need much accuracy to kill them. You are most likely going to not have much time to aim, and be hip-firing most of the time.

AK-47 is the ideal automatic rifle for a Zombie-Apocalypse I would say.

My plan for if the world ends from top to bottom...weapons list, here we go.

My dad works in law enforcement and is an avid home protection advocate, my starting weapons would consist of:

A remington 870
An AR-15
A glock 17
A Sig Sauer (not sure of the make, its .40 calibre though)
A Smith and Wesson .40 cal revolver
A Taurus Judge (can shoot .45 ACP and 10 guage shells FTW)
A KABAR knife (my dad's old service knife from the Corps)
perhaps some random items such as tools, bats, axes, and machetes

The plan: Load everything up in my Ford Explorer and take a six hour trip (actually, it would probably take days or weeks if its the Zombie apocalypse...) up to my Uncles' Hunting Lodge located in the arse end of nowhere, Alabama. the lodge itself is built over a fallout shelter from the Cold War and has been over the years renovated by my uncles who are both into a bit of ametuer survivalism (If you think about the couple from "Tremors" that's pretty much them without the craziness). The Lodge is also built to withstand tornadoes and storms hat often pass through the area and is incredibly stable and has multiple floors and exits...Anyway, when I get there the weapons loadout will look more like this...(Bear with me, I don't have an exact count of all their weapons but I know of a few items from the times I have shot them on the range.)

2 30-06 hunting rifles
2 Compound bows
a scoped crossbow
2 hunting shotguns
multiple Colt .45s
at least one .44 Magnum revolver
A 1903 springfield
An M-14 with scope
An M-4 carbine
An M-16
A Romainian AK variant
An SKS carbine
An FN-FAL (my personal favorite of the lot, i've shot it the most and am most familiar with it...)
A Thompson SMG
An M-3 grease gun
An M-60 LMG
All manner of utility and combat blades and tools as well as lockers of ammo for each weapon...
And that's just the weapons, I never covered the hardware they have...

Yeah, its a doozy of a list but I've seen em all, I obviously don't have pictures because I haven't been to that lodge in years so that collection may have gotten larger or smaller, if I can find some I'll load em up...Obviously, a big load of guns doesn't make a catastrophe level survival, but it ain't a bad start...Though honestly I'd rather be JP in said situation, its better to have a few guns at hand in that scenario than have lots of guns hours away by car...

...Oh yeah, and hopefully stay there until either the army shows up or something else good happens...

I have to say that I disagree with your opinion concerning rage "zombies"...
And these are my reasons...
First and foremost...Rage zombies ( not being actual zombies and merely infected humans) can die in a multitude of ways...where as an actual zombie can only be killed by a head shot ( or destroying the brain in some fasion)...
A mine field may kill some zombies...but it will kill most rage "zombies"...wounds that would not "kill" a real zombie will kill a rage zombie...
Second...Rage zombies will starve to death in a matter of months, a real zombie doesn't require food and can exist for years...

With the exception of speed...rage zombies have no advantage whatsoever over " real zombies"...( and even that's not true if you factor in Zack Snyder's "sprinting zombies" from the Dawn of the Dead remake.)

it all depends on the senerio. id rather be surrounded by a bunch of slow zombies then a bunch of fast zombies.

...Perhaps rage "zombies" may posses a bit more inteligence ...but AFAIK ( from watching various flms) it would appear to be negligible ...the virus seems to make " run..kill...run some more" about the extent of their knowledge...

And again, while speed is of some concern ( particularly if surrounded)...in a straight up " turkey shoot" I'd take rage "zombies" as a target any day, trying to zero a dozen ( or more) head shots isn't as easy as you'd think...but knocking down several targets ( even running targets) with body shots is very doable...
...Basicly, if you remove the "virus" factor...you just have a group of homicidal humans charging you, now...I don't know about you, but I'm fairly sure that if you let me pick five guys and our load out, we could more than effectively stop a large group of running screaming unarmed humans.

So depending on all that and terrain, anywhere from 2-25 miles without using a repeater.

funny how only the technology part refers to me. just to be clear ive only ever shot shotguns. 20 gauge to be exact. always wanted to shoot more, but with 7 people in your family money is an issue.

I would head to my grandparents house (Nepali ones) and there is no danger of zombies here, everyone is cremated.

besides, a fact about my grandfather. he is just like yoda, all scrawny till he needs something done, then he is doing backflips and everything, he also has a huge-ass sword that he forged himself. and he use it to make dinner (goats and chickens don't start out headless)

yup. when my grandfather came here someone accidentally slammed the car door on his thumb and it locked (broken bones, the works) and he asked if someone could open the door please because his thumb was inside.

all without blinking.

he aslo fasted for two weeks to get indra (god of rain) to stop the villages drought...it worked.

he also (when some mouist insurgents were going to attack) went and stood in the road with his sword while the others ran away...the mouists were afraid of him when they came...and the man is only five foot at the most.

the mouists (insurgents) actually ran off. true story.

When it comes to zed, it really depends on the type you are referencing. Ragers have the same senses as a normal everyday person, while traditional "undead" have heightened smell and hearing, which would defeat the purpose of a Ghillie Suit. So unless you are worried about other people, I personally do not feel that it is a worthwhile investment in this situation.

automatic shotgun, shotguns have better range than films/games give them credit for.

M14/AK47 (the AK has simply put, powerful shots, these make a big difference)

While it will help you blend in, the problem is that it is bulky and has a tendency to slow you down. You would be better off with a Ghillie blanket that you can quickly ditch if/when SHTF.

When it comes to army vehicles, the trick isn't knowing how to drive them, it's figuring out how to start them correctly.

Uncle Sam doesn't believe in using keys as soldiers will have a tendency to lose them during battle. So he has come up with a million and one ways to start a vehicle.

Actually...against Rage zombies, fire might work better (albeit only by a little) as rage zombies feel pain lighting a bunch on fire at once might be distraction enough for you to get away...

Now obviously that is only viable in an open area as I'd not want to be backed into a corner with a bunch of fiery zombies in front of me...

So many of you are thinking to much inside the box.....

1. Nuke (So what if you die in the process, you've killed like 100,000 zombies in about a split second)

2. If you survive for some odd reason, bring a sling shot, you'll laugh your ass off you hit a zombie in the head and he just makes a sound kinda like this "OOMPF"..."GAAAAAaaaaa"

3. A really really tall ladder, so when your up top, even a rage zombie doesn't have the mind set to climb up ;D

...

1. But..I want to live, survival is the whole point.
2. Ok, I'll give you this one...that's just funny.
3. They don't have to climb it, just have to knock you off the top of it...now of course being on top of a structure sniping..win.

1. attract zombies to your position
2. Lead to the top of high structure.
3. Cross retractable bridge to other structure
4. retract bridge, sit in conveniently placed recliner, listen to "Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh......" For three hours...
5. Win.

Am I forgetting anything? Oh yeah...

6. ???
7. Profit!
