EDIT: A note about this blog. Since beginning this blog, some images that were posted have changed url due to organising photobucket into albums. Therefore there are a few broken images. Please don't let that discourage you too much, as there are still plenty of images that work fine throughout the blog. From page 5 onwards, there will be new updates that won't have this broken image problem. Thanks.
Hey all, just quickly posting this thread, although not gona put up too much for the moment, coz it's 2:30 am here, I have to work in 6 hours or so, and I'm about to head to bed.
As much as I know everyone (well, me at least) loves pic heavy threads, I'm gona have to start this one off with some text, just so you can get a bit of an idea of who I am and where my hobby is at. HOWEVER, I will endevour to keep this thread picture heavy, and word... not so heavy.
[commence introductory text]
So basically, many years ago, I was into this hobby. My first ever bought kit was the old box of plague marines, with basically one pose, and a up-and-down boltpistol arm. I bought and painted models (mostly chaos marines, but at times extremely haphazardly, I remember buying a box of Dark Elves and the Army book, even though I had no intention of playing Fantasy) In general, I didn't really play the game, but I really did enjoy the painting/modelling aspect of the hobby. I thought, at the time, that I was quite a decent painter. Looking back now, I was pretty average, at best (at worst, not so much)
I eventually wrote up an army list for Empere's Children, build a couple of squads, and played some small 500 point games with them, but that was about as far as my gaming side ever went. After about 2 years, I dropped out of the hobby completely.
Until, a month or so ago, I got the hobby itch again. Once again, I had no intention of playing the game, in fact I decided I would only buy models that I liked the look of, to paint them. Generally this would mean buying blisters and cool monsters, no point buying squads..
After painting one or two models, I was at home, reading 'The First Heretic' when I read this:
'You are not intitled to watch over me me like a pack of prison wardens. I am the Emperor's son, formed by his mastery in order to carry out his will. You are a flock of genetic toys pieced together in a laboratory from vials of biological scrap. You are so far beneath me that I wouldn't piss on your bodies even if you were aflame. So... let me be clear, in the spirit of preventing future misunderstandings.'
And, I decided Lorgar was a badass, and that I wanted to build a Word Bearer army.
I have a mate (omgitsduane), who I had been dragging along with me to GW to paint some stuff, who also plays, and I think at some point in the past had tried to convert me to play some games, and I had never wanted to before, so now he has someone he can play some regular games with, keeping him happy. He was also the one that was constantly at me to start a blog, even when all I was doing was painting.
That's basically my story, so this will be the first army I've built in a long time (realistically the first proper army ever) and I thought I'd succumb to the blog idea, and show you all some stuff.
[/end introuctory text]
So this isn't a complete waste of a thread/post, so early on.. I'll leave you with this....
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:I saw this model in omgitsduane's thrread and said out loud "wow that is an awesome...wait, that's not his!"
Then I followed the link here.
If the rest of your army turns out to be even 1/2 as cool as that Dark Apostle is, you're going to have a great force.
I cant remember but i think the model was made using my generous bits and a battleforce. I have ownership thusly.
And trust me, from what ive seen the rest of his army is nicely detailed so far. Baby steps.
So here is the first model I painted after getting back into the hobby, just an example of the work I've done. I'm hoping to make this Bearer army of similar quality, I'm quite happy with how this turned out..

Welcome to Dakka! Subbed, and I'll be back.
Thanks man, much appreciated! Hope I can keep the standard up!
That is brilliant I take it it's a DE Lahmia. Really liking the look of the CSM is he planned to be a Dark Apostle. Although I can't look at a model in that pose without thinking he's brandishing his shopping list....
This fella here is my concept model for counts-as Bezerkers, known as 'Fanatics', the idea being that these are the most zealous in spreading the Word, by wanting to tear up everything that won't listen.
Ideally, they will be covered in more scrolls, purity seals etc than the normal marines, and all of them will have the shrine type thing on their backpack, or something similar.
I'm not sure if I will even have a place for Bezerkers in my army, but I really just wanted to make a model to conceptualise the idea I had.
And this bad boy is a standard marine, who will be armed with a meltagun. The backpack decoration is to mark him out easier mid game as a special weapon carrier.
Unfortunately, none of the models are fully built and ready to paint, I'm waiting for a delivery of Word Bearers shoulder pads from GW, I've decided to go all out on these guys..
I also have roughly $70 of bitz coming in from ebay at some point, hopefully within the next couple of weeks.

It's a DE Sslyth I liked the model and thought it might paint up nice.. and voila!

Thanks! As of now, he is a Dark Apostle.. As I build the army more, he might get demoted to an Aspiring Champ when I decide to make a more kick-ass Apostle.
As for the shopping list, lmao I can just see it now..
WE NEED MORE MILK!
AND BREAD!
AND SKULLS FOR THE...
Thought I'd post one last group shot, this is everything I have, at it's current point of progress. As soon as these bitz arive, I'll be able to build some marines at a much faster rate!
Thanks for all of the replies so far, really encouraging
Good work mate. Looking forward to more games, my veterans will one day account for lots of deaths in your ranks!
Also in another note, you mentioned that you said I was hassling you to make a blog "when all I did was paint" PFFFT There are plenty of people with bad-ass blogs that only paint.
omgitsduane wrote:Good work mate. Looking forward to more games, my veterans will one day account for lots of deaths in your ranks!
Not if I can help it!!
Unfortunately, I'm not planning on posting any updates until I get my bitz, as I don't plan on building any more models until I have what I want to use..
On that note, this just showed up
Not sure if you can tell, but here we have a couple of grey knight heads (not sure if I want to use them yet, but I thought they looked regal-ish like), three pairs of Grey Knight legs (I mainly chose these for their tabards, but I might leave some of them with the engraved script in their armor, the rest I'll GS over) a Black Templar robed body (the imperial markings will have to come off, but this should be good for a champ, or for chosen, no? My mate thinks he might have some robed DA bodies spare, so might hit him up), and lastly a DA book.. Not sure what that's going to be used for yet, but can never have enough Books of Lorgar!
This is only a tiny portion of the bitz I ordered, however, posting from the UK to my tiny little island (Australia) takes forever, so I can expecting to wait a while for the rest :(
okay, I said I wouldn't update until I had some models finally built, but, I lied.. I just wanted to share some things.
First up, this.
Here is an image I came across, that's given me a bit of inspiration. I relaly like the look of the traitors here, and really wanna make a squad up. I might use them as a summoned daemon unit for the army, or just as a side project for myself. I think they'd be simple enough using guardsmen torsos and legs, and catachan arms.. I'd need some badass heads though..
* * * * * *
Next up, this
I just decided tonight to paint one of the bases I have sitting here waiting for a marine to go on it, I just wanted to practice the effect I wanted to paint on the tile portions of the base, and this is what I came up with. (Note; the base will have sand/rubble etc on it, not just be tiles, as is the case at the moment) Please, give me some feedback on what you think.
The first picture was my original attempt, just a basecoat and simple highlight.. The grey I think is maybe too sharp a highlight to the black, but that's easily fixed.
The second picture, was the same base, after a Devlan Mud wash all over. I definitely liked the shading this brought to it.
Lastly, I wanted to try to create a dirtier tile effect, so tried giving it a drybrush type effect with some Scorched Brown, this is how it came out.
I'm thinking I want something between step 2 and 3 possibly for the final effect to be used across the army.. What do you all think?

The traitors are modelled on the forgeworld renegade militia enforcers.
Loving the Dark Apostle and the conversions so far mate. The tiled base looks good and I'm interested to see what you come up with for your traitor guard. Will be watching.
Just a quick picture of an Aspiring Champion for squad 1. This is only a dry-fit, as I'm not completely commited to the pose and bitz used.. Any thoughts?
Bit of an update here, since my bitz showed up, I've been doing a bit of assembling.
So far this is my first squad, at the stage they are now, in various stages of being fully glued together.
And today I also painted up one of my squad, as a test paint scheme. This is how it turned out. I would love some C&C on him before I start to paint the others (once they've been assembled completely of course!)
I'm pretty happy with how he turned out, the red seems to have worked nicely, the green on the cables works well as a complimentary colour, and you can see the chequered effect on the tiling on the base. Again I stress, I would love to hear some feedback.
This stuff is looking great. I like the pose of the aspiring champion. I would maybe add a few scrolls or impurity seals though as the Word Bearers are usually described as being cover in the txts of Lorgar. For your painted test mini I personally would add a further highlight around the face apart from that you have a nice deep red there and the loin cloth has come well. The green is a perfect contrast.

Thanks! The photo looks to be quite darker than the actual model in person, as usually seems to be the case.
I know what you mean about more scrolls etc.. Will definitely look into sprucing that look up a bit more!
Thanks for the comments!
Just a quick update, here's a better picture of the test scheme marine, with some better light. He's also had an teempted freehand legion design put on the shoulder pad... The shoulder pad is only temporarily stuck there, until I decide whether I'm going to use the GW sculpted pads on every model, or just the Aspiring Champs on HQ choices....
Your Word Bearers are inspiring and very well done. It makes me want to take mine off the Shelf of Shame and get to work on them, but I have too many other projects I'm commited to right now.
Few random pics to throw up, first of all, due to the *assorted other goodies* promised in the thread title, here is a pic of my shelf, of some past, probably not present, possibly future projects, in various stages of being complete (or not complete)
Next up, just some sneaky preview shots of some stuff happening in my army...
I really like how you paint and model. Both are impressive. The attention to detail, the highlights, the color choices, the conversions... all very well done.
A question about the chain though- is that a "mock up" and you'll use something else, or is that the chain you'll use when the model is being completed? I ask because that style of chain (to me) ruins the perspective of scale and chains that would look proper scale are readily available from any craft store that has jewelry accessories.

That indeed is a chain from a craft store, as a jewelry accessory, however yes, it was just a mock up, for a cool concept of chained daemon slaves, something I don't actually intend to make part of the models, but something I thought was a cool concept/idea regardless.
I will however be using these chains, or similar chains to this, on models, as various things, if you see the squad above, you might notice one bolt pistol weilding marine, with a bolter slung using a fine modelling chain.
Understood. I'm speaking about the style of the chain as much as the size. Here's a pic I took for comparison but going to "spoiler" it so I'm not hijacking your thread:
Spoiler:
Top two chains and bottom two chains are variants of cable chains. Chain in the middle I can't find the "industry" name but (to me) looks like a necklace no matter what I scale it against.

Ahh, I do indeed see your point..
Here is a close up of the chain used to sling the banner bearer's bolter, what do you think in terms of scale/style on this chain?
And here is the current 'chain range' that I have. The top chain I bought myself from a local hobby store, the other ones were all passed on to mee by omgitsduane. The darker one second from bottom is the one I used on the bolter sling. Maybe I should have taken the pic next to a model for better clarification.?
Edit: Here is an example of the top chain, that I bought, being used, on my 'filthy heretic' concept model
Thoughts?
Looking good, do you have another pic of the freehand insignia? I like the green wiring but personally I would change the colour of the seals. Maybe a deep purple?
Mind you, this is my opinion and that it may differ from others.
1, 3, and 5 are the "necklace" style that (to me) looks "wrong" because of how it folds over. 1 is just huge scale-wise. 4 is a good style but is about as large as I would go unless it was on a vehicle. 2 looks really good and I'd like to find some of that myself.

Yeah I agree somewhat... 2 looks great, but the problem is that the links are actually all clsoed, so can't really be hung on, or attatched to anything, unless it's just glued straight to something, which probably looks a little unrealistic..
Biohazard wrote:Looking good, do you have another pic of the freehand insignia? I like the green wiring but personally I would change the colour of the seals. Maybe a deep purple?
Here you go, it's not amazing and I tried to make it blend into the shoulder pad, which had the detail scraped off, but was still slightly uneven, which is why it's a bit odd.. The rest I'm hoping will look better as I do more..
Here is where the squad is standing currently, just about ready for painting!
And here is a small preview of what I am working on next for the squad...
Got some more mail today...
BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
... I think Khorne just Slaanesh'ed in his pants...
ANYWAY! On to some progress finally worth writing an update for, a good portion of the marines now have their first basecoat on them... It looks a little patchy, the Mechrite Red doesn't seem to get such great coverage on black, which is a bit odd, as I thought that was the whole purpose of 'Foundation' paints..
The thing is, I think I like this darker shade of red a little more than the previous test model I painted.
It looks really streaky at the moment however, which is kind of a cool effect, and definitely Chaos-y, but I really wanna go for a nice, clean paint job on this army, so I might try and get it a similar shade to this, but with even, clean coverage.. any thoughts on this shade of red compared to the model posted previously?
I build my red up from a scab red/chaos black base coat. I make it pretty much 50/50 and then apply the Mechrite over this once dry. It covers a little better and helps me blend a little smoother. The freehand symbol looks good for a first attempt. By the time the squads finished you'll have it nailed. The squads looking ace by the way
And, so here is my 2nd attempt at trying a scheme for my WBs...
I don't like the face in this picture, and the red in general doesn't look appealing to me, I like the colour, not the exucution, looks a bit messy for my taste. This isn't quite finished yet, and now that I see the face on such a big scale, I'll have to try and fix that.. but I was so happy with how the tabard came out I just had to take a snap!
I like this. A lot man. Very proud son. Also paint the bloodcrusher at some stage dude. And that daemon prince, since you'll soon learn how much better they are over lords.
I like the idea you were trying with the face. It looks like the red really just needs another thin layer of Mechrite to smooth it out yet retain the darker tone. The loincloth looks goos as well mate.
Biohazard wrote:I like the idea you were trying with the face. It looks like the red really just needs another thin layer of Mechrite to smooth it out yet retain the darker tone. The loincloth looks goos as well mate.
Thanks mate, I was using a Mechrite Red/Blood Red mix for the highlight, think for the next batch of models I will try a mix of Mechrite Red/Bleached Bone to try and prevent the layer of highlight being so garish and bright compared to the rest..
I'm really quite happy with that tabard, I painted a second one last night, but I felt the 'text' was a bit too big so I'm going to redo it, the smaller one has a much nice effect..
Some heavy progress finally happening..
It's time I think soon to start looking at building an army list as well, I have a vague idea as I've been playing a few friendly games with omgitsduane but that's only against one army...
SO far I have this one squad of marines, a Dark Apostle (Lord), a second squad of marines I can build..
Got a Devastator box set on it's way, to use for Havocs... I'm thinking next I should look at buying some daemons, and/or terminators...?

those skulls look really cool, where did you get them? i am no Khorne-lover, but i do love little skulls to spice up the old bases!
Ebay actually, Here's the auction Quite reasonably priced I think.. the skulls are 28 mm scale, however they are actually a bit smaller than most of the skulls on the chaos sprue etc, as they are human skulls, and most skulls on the sprues seem to be 'marine skulls'... But they would work perfectly as base decoration etc
Try a mechrite red/Red gore mix buddy. Bleached bone will make it a lot more pink than you want. trust me on this one
Edit, I just want to say I have loads of these skuls from the same seller as well and they work great for adorning the Chaos Termi armour as well as base decor. Great price and pretty good product. I havent had a single miscast and I have over 100 of them.
I too have received loads of these skulls! I love them! I sprinkle them on all my bases!
Also, if you are looking for ones that are a bit larger, the same seller has ones with a closed jaw bone,
and they work great for marine sized skulls, or as helmets for Traitor Guard!
The coloring is really nice, I've always seen Word Bearers with slightly darker armor than World Eaters. And the skulls are pretty cool. Going to check out that auction.

Ah, I always wondered why there was a listing for 15 skulls, and 10 skulls, at the same price as the 20.. Now I know why! I'll have to buy some of the others! I bought ten bags of the 20 coz I thought they were the best value, didn't notice the different sculpts! The ones with the jaw seem a good scale for guardmen indeed, hmmm....
So, here's a quick update of where the squad is at so far.. Sorry for so many WiP updates! This is my first unit and so I guess I'm a little over-eager >.<
The units looking great so far. I like to see the WIP shots, I like seeing everyone else's methods so if there's anything I want to rip off..ahem If there's anything that inspires me I have a better idea of what's involved
Okay, I have some progress to post, but no pictures yet, plus I'm saving up so I can do a nice solid update all at once.
Word floating around is that there is a local tourney kicking off in Feb, and I think I'm pretty keen to give it a go, so this has really put a timeline on getting some stuff completed..
The tourney is 1350 points, I've written up a quick draft army list which can be found here . Wouldn't mind some influence and suggestions.
I've just put an ebay order through to complete the first stage of my army.
I ordered,
Dark Angels Veterans (these will be the basis for my Chosen)
Bloodletters of Khorne (lesser daemon goodness!)
Empire Flaggerants (heretics, to count as daemons)
And a box of Chaos Terminators (speak for themselves really)
Kinda funny how 4 box sets, and not a single one from the same range as the rest..
Anyway, the waiting game begins, but this all means there should be some pretty steady progress coming soon!
So, my good mate, who also happens to be a manager at a GW store near me, got me this for my birthday today
Spoiler:
In case you can't see too well, what we have here is a box of Terminators, a Terminator Lord, a Rhino, a finecast Chaplain (which is awesome!) a Chaos codex, and 2 sets of Word Bearers FW rhino doors! Needless to say, I am feeling extremely grateful/excited!
But now, what we all (probably) came here for! Some awesome progress pictures!
Here we have the first squad! These are basically finished now. Some small details might need to be retouched/done, and some of the bases need to be finished, but that aside, this is it! Now for some individual shots!
This here is the aspiring champion The backpack has the flames around the skull, to mimic the legion's symbol. It could have come out better, but i think it's not too bad.
This is just to show how some of the script on the tabards etc has turned out. Overall I'm pretty happy with this, particuarly the one on the left in this picture .
And, here is my attempt at freehanding the legion symbol on the shoulder pads.
Annd, last but certainly not least,
Here we have the banner/icon bearer for squad 1.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Next up, we have this
This is a WiP of the assembling of squad 2. To differ them a little from squad 1, I'm trying to focus them more towards looking combat orientated, even though they likely will be used the same as the first squad. So this means either wielding chainswords with their bolters, or having bayonets attatched, and maybe some other cool stuff I haven't figured out yet.
Here is my favourite of the second squad assembled so far, I really like his pose, he looks really mobile and just badass.
And lastly, a bit of a preview of what's also coming up next...
Spoiler:
Ninja edit: Here's some small detailing work I've started on the interior of my first Rhino..
risewiththefallen wrote:Really nice! What does the banner say?
Thanks! The banner says;
'From the fire of betrayal..
Unto the blood of revenge..
We bring the word of Lorgar..
The Bearer of the Word..
The favoured son of Chaos..

And feed the hunger of the gods..'
It's an excerpt from a passage of the Book of Lorgar.
Capitansolstice wrote:Cool, Your GW store manager must like you
Haha, let me just reiterate. He is one of my closest mates, he just happens to work at a GW also I haven't just become a really favoured customer or anything of his, I knew him for a while before I even knew he worked at GW, and when I found out, it was during my long hiatus away from the hobby. That being said, he's been really keen to help me out with getting back into the hobby.
Biohazard wrote:These are looking awesome buddy. Really like the red you have and the banner is brilliant in its simplicity.
Thanks mate, I was thinking of using banners to do some crazy and cool freehand stuff, but I figured, what are Word Bearers, without some Words to Bear?
Your Word Bearers are really coming along! The banner is awesome and the individual litany scripts on each WB are very well done, really solid to the WB fluff.
Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:

Thanks mate, much appreciated.. I've been spending a bit of time here and there in your plague marine thread.. Got some very cool stuff in there
Got some more pictoral goodness for the general internet public. Hazza!
This is where squad 2 is sitting at currently, the champion is just a dry fit until I find a robed chest. (or do you think the normal CSM chest works okay with the robed lower half?)
Here is my first Rhino, with some interior painting done.. This is my first Rhino, in fact first vehicle really, so has been a learning experience.. I'm happy to let this one not be 100%, so that my next couple might be..
And.. here is a Chaos Terminator.. with a Space Wolves head!
This is where squad 2 is sitting at currently, the champion is just a dry fit until I find a robed chest. (or do you think the normal CSM chest works okay with the robed lower half?)
I love the fist champion. Quite a nice pose and pretty intimidating. And the chest without robes isnt a big deal. If it bothers you that much i'll sculpt over it for free.
I think the lower half robe and regular chest is fine. I've been collecting models like that for over a year now, I have a Word Bearers project I plan on starting when the Plague Marines are done.
Done. Ha. Yeah, that'll happen. I'm a bit obsessed there I think.
Anyway, yes the robes look good, and I really like the Terminator you've built.
As for the Rhino, it's cool that you're experimenting w/ it and learned the tricks of building one instead of laboring over it. Your next few will go together all the faster / better.
I really love the look of that squad with the fist guy. Get em done bro! Hopefully your bits arrive and you can get it started because I'm eager to see it all come together. When do we have to sign up for this tourney?
Bit of a mini update, not much is happening while I'm waiting for the rest of my army to FINALLY show up from Ebay (apparently ordering 2 weeks before Christmas is a bitch)
The interior of one of my three rhinos.. Word Bearers getting up to more of their pesky daemon summoning naughtiness
Next up, we have, my concept/idea for a 60mm based objective I need for the upcoming tourney
The idea is that this is either a captured loyalist, or a sweet talked allied traitor, that is being used to summon a daemon(s).
There will be a chaos star around him, the main 4 points of which line up with the candles, similar to the Rhino interior, and the lesser 4 points will line up with the skulls.
Ideally, I'm going to put a bloodthirster arm reacing out of the stomach/chest of him too, but we'll see how that goes.
There will be a heap of chains etc binding him to the pole also. Huzzah!
And thirdly, a 40 mm objective, for the same tourney. The flag is not currently actually glued, coz the thing will be spray undercoated.
Also a Happy New Year to all you Dakka-ites out there, here's to a new year of hobby related goodness!
C&C, questions, and general ranting welcome as always.
I respect how you are going about this project. It's so much more that just an "army", you really understand the spirit behind it. Very well done on so many levels.
Skalk, I think it's partly from the fact that my first models ever bought, were Chaos Marines (Plague Marines in fact, I think you'll be happy to hear) and Chaos is basically the only army I've ever collected and painted, and also the fact that my inspiration for starting Word Bearers was reading The First Heretic, this pretty much means that the sotry line/fluff and character behind the army is something I feel I can grasp pretty strongly..
Anyway, replies aside, onto some fun stuff!

My finished first objective, pretty happy with how this has turned out.
My first painted Horror.. The highlights look a lot more stark than they look irl, the model looks a lot nicer in person..
You can see here, I've used some very thin plasticard, to model some scrolls onto the arm, to help tie it into my army a little more. I'm really really happy with how the scroll turned out, it looks even better in person than the picture..
And here you can see the second Horror in the background..
And this is a model I picked up to represent a 'messenger' which I apparently need for the tourney..
It's got tons of scrolls, tomes/books, etc etc, Just needa lop off the top of the pole with the Inquisitor ][ and the imperieagle..

I was lucky enough to find it while trawling through an ebay bits store, the link to mine is Here, might be worth messaging him to see if he has others?
But after a bit of searching, I found the model is originally sold as part of a set Here from Forgeworld..

I have always wanted hector rex, I now have a reason! Thanks Jbrehaut
Hey jarrod, everything is looking great here. We'll have to find time to head to a games workshop and have a game together with out mostly painted armies... When you get to that point at least.
One thing though... did you blutac those skulls and helmets to that objective and just greenstuff liquid over it?
These doods are pretty cool Jbrehaut. The painting is solid and there is some nifty conversion work.
In anticipation for Chaos legions i am playing with some ideas for a word bearers force, so its great for some inspiration.I have really wanted to do some Word bearers ever since i saw this pic a few years ago

No worries! If only I earned commissions! But it definitely looks like a cool set of models.

Thanks heaps man! Much appreciated

Spoiler:
Thanks for the comments man, would love to see what you come up with! The Legions Codex is sounding pretty awesome..

Lmao.. no.
I made a base out of some layered plasticard, cut into progressively smaller pieces as the base, glued some skulls/helmets around it, then put some greenstuff over the top, and then embedded some more skulls into the greenstuff.. Doesn't look 100% clean, but it works for what I need.
That aside, some more pictures!
omgitsduane has been hassling me at uploading some photos of my Havocs, so here we go!
Here is the current assembling progression on my heretics (counts-as daemons)
And working on some bloodletters
I've cut down the horns, and the head, going to round out the head a bit more, and maybe greenstuff his eyes sealed, as a further emphasis on WORD bearer daemons, these are all about speaking blasphemies, so emphasising their mouths..
Spent tonight painting up the first bloodletter-based generic Lesser Daemon..
Still deciding if I like it enough to paint up a full unit, or just assemble and paint them as standard bloodletters.. Which I'll eventaully be doing a unit of anyway...
Thoughts?
Those Havocs are inspired and fantastic! Great use of bits to not only get what you want, but creating something awesome and unique in the process! If I do any more AC Havocs, I'm totally going to -steal- borrow that idea!
The "generic" Lesser Daemons are another example of your ingenuity. Great stuff all around!
Get with it, man! How can your boys spread 'The Word' when they're sitting around unpainted and in pieces? Those brochures and pamphlets about turning to the dark gods for salvation aren't going to hand out themselves.
Awesome work!
Also, per the Traitor Guard heads - for some variation, you could always try Necron heads. They have the same ball joint as a Guardsman's head, and just behind the face 'plate' is a neck piece that can be painted as flesh.
The only inspiration you need is to know you'll do a kick ass job! Your marines look amazing dude and you of all people should be psyched to paint them.
On further inspection... it's looking like maybe the original colour I used was Mechrite Red, but out of a pot that was unmixed, therefore the darker pigment that sits on top.
I guess now the question is, should I paint the rest of the army in that (I still have a pot of unmixed Mechrite) OR should I just use Scab Red and know that at least I can always buy more pots of that whenever, which will remain consistant..
Now that's going to be a awkward one for sure my World Eaters are a similar colour to your guy on the left, I used Vallejo Heavy Red with a touch of black building up to pure Heavy Red and then washed with GW Baal Red.
It seems more align to the same depth of red as your guy, have a look in my gallery and see what you think. That's providing you have somewhere to purchase Vallejo paints.
Gotta remember that adding in the completed details of silver trim, eyes and other areas will affect how your eyes perceive the red. I often have this problem with purple but, it is not until I complete the model that I realise they are identical.

Absolutely breathtaking, just like the rest of your army mate! All it needs are some eyes in the palm of its hand and its good to go!
cant wait to see more stuff! Exalted and subbed!
On a side note, you wouldnt happen to be based in brisbane by any chance would you?
I wish this wasn't setting you back so much. Because with less than a month left til the tourney there isn't really enough time to start experimenting with different paint and stuff like that. DAMN PAINT POTS!
Disappointing for another set back in this army man. It looks amazing.

That was my laugh of the day. Ha.
As far as color match goes, man I know that pain completely. My best advice is to go with something as close as you can find and make that the color for the rest of your army. The first models will blend in, and you'll spend less time going completely mad.

That's what I'm going to do Thanks Skalk, and everybody else for your lovely replies and comments, certainly makes me wanna get back on the horse!
And, just coz I haven't posted anything juicy in a while, here's a pic.
In it, you can see the Apostle model that I originally built forever ago finally with some paint on it.
Please note the Crozius IS currently blu-tack'ed on, it keeps breaking off, so I will have to pin it eventually.. The engle that the head is sitting atm is off slightly, it'll be more front facing, so keep that in mind.
I agree with skalk. This army is such an inspiration to all things chaos. I'll be doing a practise death guard marine too at some stage at your request.
I hope you enjoy the pinning on your apostle.
Quick pic of the army so far, this is the whole lot, except vehicles..
The bloodletters there are directly courtesy of ebay, I had a feeling I wasn't gonna end up converting a full squad of http://i1121.photobucket.com/albums/l506/JBrehaut/letter1painted.jpg in time. The paintjob isn't perfect, and it doesn't fit into the army 100%, but they're not too horrible, and they will suffice.
Here are a few close-up shots of particular models I've been painting recently..
Yeah JB looking sweet. I can't wait to see everything done. Such a shame you wont get the table piece done in time for GoW though :( All this kaffufle with the damn paint colors has set you back so much and clearly caused you more drama than should have been necessary. Hope you're getting lots more work done as I write this. FOR THE DARK GODS!
Wow, not THAT is a cool idea (Heretics "counts as" Lesser Daemons)!
I think I'm going to have to try that sometime.
Excellent models, btw. Every update = more awesome goodness!

Awesome work. This really is incredible stuff.
Definitely love the Dark Apostle.
Thanks all, very muchly appreciated!
I'm glad this army has been enough to catch your attention, and even inspire some.
The blanks are slowly starting to fill in now, I'm currently aiming to get every model up to a basic painting completion (only a week and a half til the tourny!) just so that I can put them on the table.
After the tourney I will go back and finish filling in all the details, for now it's just getting some colour across the whole board.
After all of this is complete, I have a box sitting here with some daemonettes, a couple of squads of more marines... And much more awesomely, a Land Raider and a Daemon Prince kit.
After I finish ALL of this, I might either start a 2nd army, but I will continue to add to my Word Bearers, or I'll try some other squads of other Chaos Legions (Maybe some Thousand Sons or something) to add to my Chaos Army.
I can't wait to see you do a display board for these guys. I really feel bad that you won't get it done for the tourney cos it would sell them heaps I reckon. Maybe after an apoc game we should make it anyway for future displays? Tomorrow get ready to paint bro.
WELL there is only a few more days before the tournament, and the army is still not finished!
I am pumpin it out as quickly as I can to get this finished by Sunday. I've already lowered my own standards of painting to a very basic level, until the tournament is over at least, basic scheme to get them on the table, and then finish the details etc once the timeline pressure has relaxed a little.
I have some more work in progress shots however
Here are my WiP Chosen Marines, together with the Dark Apostle..
The Rhinos so far.. It seems like they all have their own slightly different shades of red :S Which is not the greatest thing, but it is what it is..
The coats on those other two rhinos looks so clean and crisp. Wonderful job you did mate. You already know it, but I am in love with what you did to those icons on either side of the rhinos and can't wait to see this army on the table finished. Why do the treads look so black though?
I can't believe, out of 30 people, we played eachother in a tournament and for once your chaos marines won! You are bearing the word in a big way. Now make a new list and really start taking names.
This is my 100th post, so I figured I'd make it something special!
I've got a fair few photos to upload, so here we go!
Just had the tournament last night, so following are a couple of pics of the army.
(Keep in mind the army isn't quite finished. There's still a few different models I plan on using in the future, and the models that I DID use, aren't quite finished anyway, but this is the standard they were done to, in order to play)
Bit of a lighting difference in these pictures, makes quite a big difference to the look really..
Here's a couple of shots I took today in the sunlight to try and show them in some natural light
Now, onto the results!
Overall, I ended up coming 13th overall, out of 28 players.
Considering it was my first tournament ever, with my first army ever, using a list that wasn't competitive (using Chaos, with no Daemon Princes, no lash, no Vindicators, no Obliterators), I'm quite happy with the results.
Here are some of the other beautiful armies that were being played on the day.
From left to right, top to bottom;
Ultramarines
Lamenters
Tyranid Genestealer army (I played against this for my 4th game, was very interesting)
Beautifully painted Eldar
Pre-heresy Space Wolves
Ultramarines
And lastly, an amazing Space Wolves army, which has an AMAZING Wolf Lord as it's centrepiece. This army won 1st place overall, as well as Best Sport, and I believe Best Painted army..
And a shot of the game vs the Tyranids.. man those things are nasty!
Well, now that that part is all done and dusted, it's time to;
Finish the current models. They all need a bit of paint still on them before I consider them finished
Assemble new models. I have a Daemon Prince kit, a Land Raider, some more daemons, and some more marines sitting here to add.
Write some new lists, and play some games!
Dude this is an amazing 100th update! Well done in the tournament for one thing! Much better than I think we both thought we'd be. As for the army keep working on it and eventually we'll both have huge chaos forces that might be worthy of killing anything other than stomping guardsmen heads!
Seriously. That sargaent with the fist... Has to be one of the best chaos marines I've ever seen! I can't wait for apocalypse this weekend when we smash those loyalist blue pansies and those space fairies. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!
The "group photo" complete w/ display board was impressive. This is one of the better "for play" armies I've seen in a long time, and to know that it is only going to grow from here is really awesome. Looking forward to whatever comes next!
I know it's been a bit delayed, but here is the pic I promised showing my new project
It's not quite finished, I have some thinking to do about the direction I wanna take with the rest of the model, and then decide whether I want to paint a whole army that way.
Any comments, ideas or critisisms would be greatly appreciated, as I really wanna work something magical into this
Also, there is some cool new chaos stuff I've been working on.... Stay tuned.
Love the necron scheme. Have you decided on the gun yet?
I was just looking over your scheme and I can sort of see why, even with some unfinished models how you scored better than me, its clear that each of your finished guys is just at an above tabletop standard. There is a lot of work put into this army from the ground up and I admire it. I'll need some mean bases for my termies now.
Hey guys!
It's been forever since my last update, most of this has been due to working on a side project (link is here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/438963.page)
I've also been working on some chaos stuff lately, however just haven't documented much, but figured I should post some stuff as this thread did draw a bit of attention in it's day!
Here's some of the following work that I've been up to lately!
Just some preview shots for now, more to follow-!
Edit: Also notices that it seems all the photobucket uploaded images have disappeared :( Not sure if they do that once the account's been inactive or what the story is, I'll see if there's any way to fix it)
Edit Edit: Turns out a while ago I moved my photobucket images into folders, which, of course, changed the url >.< If I could undo this, I would in a heartbeat, but alas! Now my thread will look ugly with broken images forever. Looks like I'll ahve to do a photo shoot for all of my models sometime soon!
Here are some of the pics I promised to upload! New updates!!
Original Rhino - updated with freehand on top doors and additional painting.
Original Rhino - updated with additional painting.
'Verba' is 'Word' in Latin
After all the debacle I've had previously with the specific red I wanted to use, GW in this time have changed their paint range, so I've needed to settle on something new. This is to be the new red used for the army (I had to premix this colour so hopefully I can mix more consistently!)
Paint in Progress Hellbrute with the new red colour
Hey, I remember this thread! Welcome back! The new work looks excellent and I'm looing forward to seeing more! Really like the Dreadnought. Yes, I know. Just because GW renamed it doesn't mean it changed what it is.
Thanks Skalk! Good to know I'm still putting out stuff worth checking out.
Did a bit of painting tonight, been working on a new squad champion, now that I've been generally running them cheap with standard weapons rather than power weapons.
He's also got a candle on his backpack, just because, you know, Word Bearers are into that kinda stuff
Edit: Just noted upon uploading, that the lighting for the photo wasn't so great, it really washed out and overbrightened the tones on the skulls and stuff, it looks far better in person.
I may have to take some more photos to put up something that shows off a little more of my layering
So things have been slow to progress, with the exception perhaps of the last week or two, so I've done what seems to have (mostly) worked last time. Enrolled in some tournaments!
Not only are they good for gaming, but they help provide a timeframe that painting needs to be done by, which helps motivate me to punch out hobby at a decent rate. I have two coming up, an 1850 at the end of March, and a 1250 mid April.
That means there should be a load of new pics coming up over the next month! Stay tuned.
For now, I'm finishing what I've got started, but, as 6th ed has changed the game, I have some reinforcements on their way! (think allies... )
That's 5 screamers, and 5 flamers, also a Lord of Change to come, and 5 horrors (one or two which were posted earlier in this thread, painted a long time ago!)
Also recieved some of the new Deathwing Knights models. I plan on using these to convert up some Chaos Terminators, so far this is what I've come up with
All the arms are magnetised, so far I've put magnets into about 3 pairs of lightning claws, one mace/shield (sure we can't take em, but they look awesome!) the heavy flamer, and also a random combi bolter.
I think the robes and tabards look quite cool and very Word Bearers-esque, but I also feel they need a little extra to really distinguish them as being Chaos.. any ideas out there?
oh very nice, imo i think that DA robed termies + woc heads look better than with hooded heads, makes them look more like fanatics, but thats just me
plus nice banner, i look forward for them bitch slapping some tanks
As far as the hoods, I would reserve them for specific characters like a Warpsmith or Dark Apostle. Just my opinion, but it's how I do my force, makes the special characters stand out a bit more.
Have not updated this in too long, which is disappointing, but I got some stuff to show you all.
Got the termies finished(ish), ran the tournament, placed 14th out of 28 (half way up, not bad considering some of the army lists there)
Ran another tourney at 1250 points, got absolutely smashed (second last, although with an admittedly really soft list, at a no-comp tourney, I got lazy and submitted army list literally on the day so just went with the 1850 army, minus all the daemons, leaving me just foot marines)
Painted up some new units, and now have a tourney tomorrow. Will post some pics of all the new stuff once tomorrow is over
Well another tournament passed and gone, results were nothing worthy of being notable. Unfortunately the lighting in the place wasn't amazing, so got no action shots, but have taken the opportunity to take a bunch of random snaps of some models when I got home, so, here's some random sporadic images of where some things are at.
Havoc Squad
Havoc close up
Aspiring Champion
Champ with flamer and close combat weapon marine
Marine details, note the freehand icon, the chaos symbol on the shoulder pad, and the purity seal made with green stuff and using a pin head to 'nail' it to the backpack.
Two banner bearers, first one yet to receive text
Aspiring champ and plasma gunner
Terminators. These guys had these arms painted up literally the day before the tourney, as they had lightning claws last tournament. So a bit rushed on the arms.
I realised I'm an idiot and have a few more pictures of other stuff I've gotten done.
I will just apologise for the quality, as these are all taken with an iPhone, however, I figure it's better than nothing, and I've been particularly lazy with updating when I actually have a bit of stuff I've done
Vindicator
This was a WiP shot I had taken of the terminators with their lightning claw arms on
Terminator Lord with Burning Brand - he has since been tidied up a bit more around the flames, and verdigris used on the copper areas - really should take a new picture
This was a shot of the daemons I had painted up as allies for one of the tournaments - very much still unfinished
Lord of Change still WiP
And an army wide shot as it was used in the most recent tourney
A few weeks ago I painted this up, keen in mind it is still not finished
Colour scheme prototype for a Sons of Horus model. There are so many variations of what the actual colour of the Sons of Horus armour is, across different blogs, or even artwork from GW itself, but I'm pretty happy with this shade of colour.
This is a scheme trial for my next upcoming project - Salamanders! I feel absolutely traitorous to the Chaos gods to even consider a loyalist army, but I'm really excited about this project, it'll be one to watch out for!
And now on to Word Bearers stuff, here's something I knocked up last night.
Dark Apostle/Chaos Lord conversion (Dark Apostle rules are awful so will generally be used as a Chaos Lord)
I'm really happy with this. The model is built using the new Fantasy Plastic Chaos Lord body.
However has only just occurred to me, should the book be the other way, facing him, as if he reading it aloud? I'm wanting to get painting started soon, so some feedback would be great coz I'm really unsure now, and there's still yet time to change it.
Apart from that, I'm going to add some parchments etc, but I'm really pleased with this conversion.
You could possibly do some OSL on the book as if it's projecting a blast of warp energy :/ Your whole army is looking great though! I like the conversions you did with the termies.
Sorry I haven't been around for a bit. I'm always glad to make it back here though because each visit has so much awesome. The Bastion is a great built and I'm looking forward to seeing it painted up.
YEAH!!! you are BACK i was worried that you had stopped, as this had become on of my favorite blogs.
glad to see you back so i can revel in the awesomeness someones else creates
also O.O that apostale/lord is looking awesome cant wait to see him finished
finally what bit did you use for his arm. the ram thing on his shoulder is really cool <3

Thanks so much! I really did fall off the bandwagon with the blog, didn't really think it'd be missed, but it's great to see some people enjoy it, so that's refreshing, again thanks
So as you can see, the pauldron comes on the model. It was really quite a simple conversion, but I'm really happy with the way it looks, so much taller and more important looking than normal power armor.
SO basically, I took the body above, lopped off the top of his spear, and replaced it with the banner icon from the Fantasy Chaos Warriors box. The head was also from the Chaos Warriors box. So so far, this model is using completely Fantasy parts, then a Space Marine bolter hand was lopped off, and a book from the Dark Angels sprue I believe used. Add a backpack, and some purity seals (the seal I used had the wax seal cut off and spliced with a small chaos icon that comes from Fantasy Marauders sprue) and voila! A Dark Apostle!
It is truly a nice conversion. I bought that guy when WoC came out and have been waiting for a good idea to convert him. Definitely a great basis for conversion!
The world has moved on from forums and message boards, largely, as social media has taken the mantle when it comes to sharing things with a community.
I've started a 'Word Bearers 2.0' army, using the new updated CSM range.
While I won't actively post here, my work can be found on Instagram, if anybody is interested, at www.instagram.com/jaybeepainting.
As a bit of a preview, here's a Daemon Prince I've painted, using the new kit:
