So the last few years have been good to me. I scored the original Realms of Chaos books on ebay, got an Armorcast Titan (which I WILL paint one of these days... honest) and just got myself a full platoon of Necromunda guys for my IG.

But I wouldn't be much of an American is that was enough now would I?

So my current quest is to get the RT-era Chapter Approved book

Which I see on ebay from time to time but never for under $100 (well I did see it go for $30 once but damnit I didn't bid!).

What other holy grails are people seeking?

For me it was the original Rogue Trader book, and I found that grail in a charity shop a few months back for a frankly ridiculously cheap price.

I suppose what I'd like to pick up next is the core 2nd ed. books. I never actually owned them, being young enough that the cost made sharing amongst friends the order of the day. It'd be nice to have a complete run of editions.

I've got that book. I'm not selling though.

I wish I'd picked up the yellow compilation book when I had chance.

Tough to say. It would probably be the Metal Thunderhawk untouched for me. Or a complete set of all the metal titan bits for the old Titans in epic.

I've got that and the red one too.

I'm not going to bother with what I call the v1.5 books (the revised vehicle and assault rules) so once I get CA I'll have a pretty complete run of the RT books. I even have a decent number of WDs from the time including the one with the original Ultramarine background (they live on Dune, they replaced the original UMs who fell to Chaos, the librarian is half eldar). Good, good stuff when you still felt like anything could happen.

Really? I think I have duplicates of the main three.

I can't think what my holy grail would be, I would like an Ad Mech squat or Asarnil the Dragonlord, or a genestealer cult. Now I think harder, I have long been on the look out for the Inquisitor 54mm genestealer. I simply haven't got the money to drop on one when they appear. Maybe when I have a good job.

I have the RT era rulebook...but I am NOT selling it!

As for hobby 'Holy Grails', mine would be a small unit of Eldar Ghost Warriors..I had one many many moons ago. Back then (I was 12) I had no idea what it was. Just that it was an awesome mini...
The other RT books would be good. 'The Lost And The Damned' is high on my list.

One of these - the original terminator - I used to have one but sadly gave it to a mate who subsequently had all his warhammer stuff knicked. Or those Primarch figures that Ronin miniatures did - they do crop up on e-bay but sell for silly money.

It's almost another universe in some ways. I've got the red one and Slaves to Darkness. I totally agree with avoiding the vehicle and assault books. They don't count IMO.

Female Guard, Plastic prefered, or metal, I'd just like to theme some in for my army.

Mainly due to the fact the Guard as always hinted that there are a fair ammount of women within its ranks, and also Gaunts Ghosts had so many great female characters in there.

Only problem is it requires someone to release something as my skills are not good enough to create my own.

So I wait.

Buying up whatever odd decent figure I can find, a female commissar counts as, and one of the Catachan grenade launcher figs so far.

Well, I might stop by and pick it up if it's there. Then we've got options! I could live with owning the old SW codex if you didn't want it. I understand the terrible drive to complete sets, it plagues my life too.

I'm not trying to virtually outspend everyone here but the Tau Manta has always been my holy grail of modelling. I always wishlist planned on converting it to actuallly carry a 1500pt army of my existing Tau figs (with the 3 vehicles and suits in the big bottom bay and additional infantry standing in the top compartment and in the 4th vehicle spot). The idea of having the Manta next to the tabletop and actually deploying my army for the game from the same vehicle it would come from in the fluff is cool.

Mine would have to be these: In the eighties they released a box set under the regiments of reknown label. I got Mengil Manhide's company of Dark Elves. At the time they also released a whole hoard of Dark Elf figures which were sculpted to blend in with the army, ranging from more warriors to witch elves and scorcerors. Blisters were pot luck if you got the ones you wanted and I was penniless at the time so there are a few that I would have liked to have got g hold of, just to complete the collection. Lastly, I'd like to get hold of an Amazon Leader from the range they did back then also: The Goddess Rigg!

It isn't hard to find heavily used/incomplete 2nd edition stuff.

You can find cheap books but they are often in questionable shape and show their age.

I have many of the 2nd edition codexes (Ork, SOB, Marines, etc.), but I would love to have complete box sets of the 40k set and Dark Millenium in mint which are hard to come by (hence "holy grail")

I think it would be the Armorcast Warhound Titan. I always liked the epic model but the 40K scale one . . .

Of course the current FW ones aren't exactly shabby, but I couldn't justify spending that much, not that I'd likely fork out for the armorcast version esp. when I don't play apocalypse.

@Howard A Treesong - I agree about the 54mm genestealer although I have one (& not about to part with it ) although I had to do something about those claws, cut them & opened them up to look like the original plastic GS - it makes for a great broodlord model

If you can find simple green just use that in a 4L ice cream pale, thats what I use to strip models. although if your using break fluid...umm... might not work so well =o[

I would love to get ahold of the Slaves o Darkness, a physical copy of BotA, Adeptus Titanicus, and the Space Marine rule book (mk I epic) as I can't find mine or my codex titanicus.

The unreleased female farseer is ugly, imho.

The original books? Got them all handed down to me.

What I am searching for is rather curious, and the searching for it has become a kind of game unto itself:

.

between 2005 and 2007 I took a timeout from 40k (the gaming and general hobby part) but kept painting.

In 2007 when I came back, I realised that they had released a bonesinger as a limited release with one of the DOW Games or somesuch.

I knew then: I had to have that one.

.

Now, at the time my funds were _very_ limited, so it was always a goal just out of reach financially.

Today I could easily afford buying a dozen off eBay whenever I feel like it, but in the last 4 years it has become a game of its own kind:

I have converted a dozen female farseers, using different ranges, I own every and all Farseer miniature (except the unreleased female one) ever produced - with the exception of the Bonesinger.

He is my blue flower, I will continuously bid for him, but although I could just buy him off of someone, and wouldn't bat an eye to pay 4 times of what he goes for usually, this has lost all meaning of owning, having the model, painting, assembling (or, now, stripping of colour).

This has become a Game of "how cheap can I get him?"

And whenever I find some auction that I _could_ finish for below something I had bid on before, I will let it slip. Because I know that I can go lower.

.

Searching and bidding for the Bonesinger is The Blue Flower for me, an unreacheable romantic goal, and one I don't want to ever reach.

.

I also have to apologise to anyone whose cost of aquiring a Bonesinger I might have driven up in the past quarter-dozen-years.

Sorry you guys, it's really weird for me, too :-/

edit: Oh, don't even bother trying to give it to me as a present - that won't count. I wanna buy it off of someone who doesn't know me, preferreably for the original retail price
Once I find that I will try finding something even cheaper...

It was a bonus limited edition model in the Eldar megaforce, not related to Dawn of War at all. Thus, it doesn't have a retail price.

I have always wanted a full on Warhammer Fortress with a keep, courtyard, stables, kennels- the whole shebang. Maybe with detailed interiors too, if I feel crazy. And a moat, and functioning drawbridge.

Problem is, I'd need to collect an army that would occupy that sort of fortress! (Currently have Dwarves, Orcs and Chaos).

Alternatively, an entire Underground battlefield would be really awesome.

Well thats simple then, A Chaos Keep, preferibly with heaps of spikes and skulls all over the place. Didn't Archon take over Brass Keep during that Storm of Chaos that never happened?

My last Holy Grail mission for wargamming was trying to track down a full squad of OOP Satyxis Raiders for Warmachine (never could track them down). I have pretty much given up on this quest in order to work on more obtainable goals (like my pre heresy “style” army made from non GW bits).

I have to say my Grail is the Chaos Dwarf Juggernought. I've seen them on eBay, and even bid a few times. But they always seem to go for $1200.00+(My max bid was 1000.00).
Other then that, I'd really like to have the Armour Caste Reaver Titan. I hope to find one with all the weapons, and hasn't been droped.

Any of the Armorcast titans, really - but the Gargant especially.

What I REALLY want is the old, old unofficial "Cerebus the Aardvark" miniature made by Citadel. I never seem to be in the right place at the right time to get one.

I have all of the Rogue Trader books.

I have all of the 3rd edition WFB books.

I have all of the original WFRP books.

I have every D&D book from original boxed sets up through 3rd edition.

I've given away more of the old 40K and Fantasy models than most of the people on this site have owned. Combined.

I have GW's original Balrog still in it's original box.

I had all of the Armorcast 40K stuff. Sold them, they weren't anything special.

I still have like 4of the original Ork Battlewagon.

I'm going to give 3 of the original Land Raiders to a friend for Christmas.

I have 5 of the Games Day Dark Elf War Hydra and a unit of 30 of the GD Dark Elf Executioners. To go with my all Aly Morrison Dark Elf army.

I have Mighty Fortress. I have the old Grenadier castle.

I have a Bonesinger.

I have something like 200 ROC Era Chaos Warriors and 200 ROC era Chaos Renegades. and 200+ of the ROC Era Beastmen.

I'm generally unimpressed with this thread. Somebody roll out something I haven't seen before.

The Book of the Astronomicon. I don't think it even real. I already have several copies of space crusade and mission dreadnought, but I'd take Advance Space Crusade and Eldar Attack. The original ork books: Freebootaz and 'Ere We Go, plus all the second edition codexs. While the figures might be better now, the games we better back then.

Metal Magic Spacelords: Sardaykin Legionaires.
Specifically the officer figures and figures with needlers and autoguns. I've got most of the range, but I'd really like to have them all.
Officers

Needlers

Autoguns

The problem isn't price, as Metal Magic Spacelords figs don't seem to have a great resale value, it's availability. I just can't seem to find any. The one's below are the ones I have. If anyone knows where I can find more...

ROC Lost and the Damned (I got slaves to darkness from my rooomate in interest for late rent)

A complete squad of the old metal Eldar jetbikes. I'm actually pretty close, but most of the parts you can find are for the shurican cannon, not catapult, or have harliquin riders.

Rogue Trader era demons. I have a few plague bearers, three lords of change, a Keeper of secrets, and a Great Unclean one so far. I like the idea of having a squad each of the original models.

They were full mutli part, separate arms, heads, torsos and legs. They also had the classic "slash and puff" clothing which made them stand out so well.

The current soldiers are monopose models with arms and heads separate(and a crap ton of ridiculous embellishments all over the place) and look like they are wearing pajamas. One of them even has no shoes on.

Almost every Empire veteran agrees that the older infantry were worlds better than the current monkey heads.

You my good Sir have impeckible taste in IG figures. I got a stonking deal on those when I was a kid, I picked up about 90 of the little plastic buggers and all the metal command, commissars, roughriders, heavy weapons and the like for $30 dollars canadian from someone who was rage quiting back in 91 or so. The whole bloody box was filled to the brim with IG stuff and random models from that era ...I so wish I kept them but then GW came up with the insane idea that you could only play with the 'newest releases' of figgies in the store so I rage quit and sold them all. Sighs, but a army of the necromunda spiders just looks so damn impressive especially with all the RT-ear officers and commissars.

Edit ^^ Those titans are beyond awsome, I love the metallic purple on the eldar stuff. The warlord is just beyond words....awsome just doesn't cut it. =o] Thank you for posting those pics, they made my night. =o]

The problem is that a lot of the Unseen that show up on eBay are recasts. It's a bit like Sergeant Centurius. There are more Centurius' in the world now than were ever made by GW.

I never bothered going after the Unseen because there's only one Unseen that I really like, the Warhammer, and I have that one (in plastic... or it might actually be vinyl).

That's unfortunate. Maybe someday I'll put in some effort to tracking down authentic ones, but it's not a pressing issue. Thanks for the heads up on the recasts, though, I'll have to keep that in mind when I start looking.

I really only want the Marauder and Warhammer, anyway.

I managed to get a pristine unused copy of Titan Legions, complete with Imperator and Gargants still on sprue (and will probably make collectors weep when they find out that I promptly took them off the sprue and assembled them) but I am still looking for some more editions to my Ork and Tyranid forces, particularly the Ork dragstas, speedstas and tanks, of which I only have a couple at the moment.

40K wise, I guess it would be a FW DKOK army. Not particularly exciting are original but probably destined to remain a Holy Grail because of the price.

Somehow getting my female trollslayer sculpt back from where ever in the world she had ended up. (I can't remember.) Why oh why I ever sold that ugly old hag I don't know: she was hideous but she got me a finalist place in a competition and I miss the old witch. Also getting back a Zara the slayer model I painted and sold (similar time as the trollslayer I think... must have been a patch of lunacy on my part). She was at that point what I considered my best painted model ever.

Thus my holy grail(s)... as they may or may not even exsist anymore.

On a not much more realistic sense: I would love to have a full size Alien so I can set it next to my front door for when I open it to cold callers.

Except the troll slayer was a unique sculpt and I converted Zara. Takes away from having the original.

My holy grail for this year was my airbrush and air compressor. Been wanting them for a long time. Now I'm laying down paint onto my armies like a mofo!

Another HG for this year was the AusCon steampunk Dorothy that got put out 2nd quarter this year. Wanted her bad, and I picked her up when they rereleased her in July.

Actually my real holy grail isn't GW. I'm a huge fan of Masamune Shirow and mostly his Appleseed franchise. When Appleseed and Ex Machina came out in 2007 and 2008 the Hot Toys company out of Hong Kong release 1/6 scale figs of both of the main characters. I 'm also a 1/6 scale fan, but didn't know about these until about 2009 or 2010, by that time both figures were unreasonable expensive (like $300 usd apiece expensive). If I ever get that type of money I'm buying these.

Can't see the pic from work. Here's the Url incase I f'd up.

+1 for the 6th edition Empire figures. Get some of the militia before they are gone too.

Makes me wonder: You always hear about how these molds for plastic are so expensive; yet there was a perfectly good one discontinued in favor of new sculpts?
Why not just keep making both?

The stores manager was I believe Darren from stratigies hobbys and games. If you look in the local yellow pages online you can call the stores themselves and ask them.

I came back I believe after 3rd edition came out and wanted to relearn the game, but I couldn't use my old GW figgies if I wanted to play in the store. This didn't apply to Epic which had changed to Epic 40k I believe. I remember because I had my guys on the old square bases and not the 'new' rectangles. As it stated in the beginning of the book that it didn't matter what you used I guess the GW 'upper managment' didn't have a leg to stand on.

Was this a company wide policy at the time? I don't know. Was this just a over zelous manager or area manger trying to put 'his' stamp on the job? I don't know. Was this just a insane idea that 'some one' in a GW tee shirt just thought up and tried to impliment? I don't know. The end result was alot of people who used to play down in the 'Gastown' store where rather pissed that all of a sudded all the money they had spent with GW was no longer 'good enough' and had to spend more to play in the stores. At this time there where no clubs around and very few stores offered 'gaming space'. I wasn't yet online and couldn't and didn't have easy access to the internet to find other players so it was still word of mouth.

There's a *slight* difference between "not like GW's business practices" and "making stuff up as we go along".

News Flash: I don't agree with all of GW's business decisions. But I still get value out of this hobby. The second I don't, I'll find something else to do with my time that doesn't involve hanging out on forums spewing hate, venom and vitriol about a company that really doesn't notice that any of us individually exist.

"do i try to change the world, or change myself"

while philosophical, try to not limit others rights, what you do with yourself is your own business, so dont interfere too much.

See, there arn't too many people that complains, e.g you can put me on ignore if you dont like see me criticizing GW.
Or are you compelled to "correct" my POV? If so, you are no different than the ones that you cant tolerate.

Nope, not Marco Colombo....Although I did see that mini recently, (not for sale sadly). It may have been an independant casting though, but the store manager at the time was saying it was a GW mini.

Anyhow, NEW holy grail (something that I cannot get at all). probably would be either a mint edition Man-o-war, and the cardstock Bugmans Brewery bash game.

Just to put this to bed- Yes, Citadel has made quite a few unreleased figures over the years. They escape to the public occasionally as store opening minis, tournament only minis, and the most common Games day only minis.
Others were given to studio employees and outriders to test paint and provide feedback to GW for future possible release. Still others were given out with large mail orders around Christmastime by the trolls as free gifts. Read about them on the citadel unreleased wiki.

Since we are talking about non GW grail items as well-
I have been after the Tamiya 1/25 scale Tiger Tank with interior for a long time. But I found one by Acedemy in 1/35 with interior that will be a fine substitute.

I've owned many of the holy grails others have listed here over the years - had them for a while, they brought me joy, but the joy ended so I passed them onto someone else who wanted them.

My one gaming holy grail that is left, is undoing the idea that there is a 'GW hobby'.

After all, you don't see model railroaders telling people that because their trains are Tri-Ang, that they aren't real "train people" because they aren't Hornby trains* - they both recognise the greater hobby they are both part of, and that they are BOTH train anoraks.

*Although, like many things, there are douches in the collecting scene for everything.

There is a tabletop miniature wargaming hobby.
GW is a company. Their hobby is violating your wallet.

Awsome, I +1 your post there Chromedog. I agree with you 100%. The Hobby is table top war gamming, "The Hobby,tm,c, GWPLC,TM,C' is a marketing term used by GW so they can as they discribe themselves " A niche with a niche market". Make of that what you will. But some people like to call 'collecting and playing GW games and figgies 'The Hobby' so lets not rain on their parade, if they want to call it 'The Hobby' all the power to them, but it's not like it's some supersecret code that only other 'Hobbiest' will understand.

Where did that fluff go? It would make me love Ultramarines even more!

Back on topic, mine is probably a Rogue Trader rulebook and then a complete 2nd ed. book set or the old Compilations or Chapter Approved.
Why doesn't GW do stuff like that any more? I'd buy it.

White dwarf #97 first details the ultramarines as being a chapter of the 3rd founding to replace the 13th legion that were banished. Later on the Ultramarines were stated to be the 13th legion of the first founding. I'm not sure if it was ever stated outright, but it could be concluded that the second lot of ultramarines replaced the originals.

Lol, I imagine not. It's funny how some people's grail is that which doesn't cross the mind of another. I do have a colour catalogue somewhere which I could scan for you if you were interested, and I find it.

I'm kind of a Land Raider fanatic, ever since I first saw the plastic kit (the newer one, not the old RT style). I've always wanted one of the FW MkiiB ones, but it appears they're not for sale any longer (no clue when that happened, but it had to have been within the past 6 months). Mostly I just want the sponsons, and those are the part that NEVER seem to make it onto eBay.

My true holy grail will always be a Land Raider Spartan that isn't someone's plasticard scratchbuild. I love the look.

Well, I hate to be 'the one' but the Spartan was a conversion with the template in a issue of WD 119??( I think). It was never released as a kit, with the left over pieces you could make a saber tank hunter....complete with ballpoint pen shaft for a gun....no really. =o]

I think they might be redoing the molds on it. That is was notorious for not fitting properly...especially the land raider doors... to bad they didn't tell people that the hatch doors where rhino sized doors...that might of helped ALOT! =o]

I also think Land Raiders are cool...I just wish they had some kind of suspension system on them. =o]

That's the one. Very economic really, use two kits to make two kits. Rather than make one kit and have a heap of useless bits left over.

Here's mine - the original LOTR Balrog. I did own the full set 'Encounter at Khazad-Dum' bhack in the late 80s / early 90s but had a hell of a job sticking him together - just kept falling apart under his own weight... This was way before I learnt about pinning models together ! I ended up swapping him for the Elf 'The Dragon Master' set, not sure why as I've never collected Elves, although do still have this model in a stripped down state (probably put it on eBay at some stage)

Good, good stuff when you still felt like anything could happen.

Is that like WD 97 or 98 or around there?

I don't have grails per se - but regrets. back in the day when the WD mags had "cut out and paste" pages, and I was young without easy access to a photocopier, I used to do just that, so all those old WDs had pages cut out and put into folers whoch have been long lost, my original 1st-run Slaves to Darkness had pages pasted over entries and other pages, and my original 1st run S2D, Rogue Trader and Chapter Approved books all exploded (as the binding of the time did) and got given away/sold. I do have the collected red and yellow books, though.

I'm lucky enough to have a RT and both RoC books in good condition, with working binding. Not sure where they are right now after the house move earlier in the year, though. Would love to get a CH again to complete the ones I care about. Other than that, probably a few old RT-era models. I'm sure eBay will help me eventually.

Try a half-bucket of dettol/simple green. A bottle of the stuff in a small enough bucket should get about 50%+ of the thing immersed. Once it's been there for awhile, scrub it then flip it over and go again.

Well, my holy grail were the original Necromunda rulebook + sourcebook + all the Necromunda Magazines, but I managed to get them all through eBay a few years back...

Now I have no nerdject for which to aspire!

Mine would be 2 x Armour Cast Warhounds, and one more Reaver Class.Would complete my Legio Astraman Titan College.

Currently have...
1 Imperator
1 Warlord
1 Reaver Class (Need 1 more)
1 Warhound. (Need 2 more)

Apparently it is 3 Warhounds to 2 Reavers to 1 Warlord to 1 Imperator.... *Sigh - one can dream....

There was no Rogue Trader model released in 2nd edition. Rogue Traders haven't been a part of the game as anything other than background since Rogue Trader.

There were a couple released in either Late 1st ed (at the point they had very much moved on from the original RT ethos) or Early 2nd Ed. At least one was Ordo Malleus and it was definaitely post-ROC:STD. For some reason I'm thinking there may be pics in one of the 2nd Ed rulebooks. They had separate backpacks. SOL is blocked from work of course, so I can't check their release dates...

Scipio, I think you're getting confused between Rogue Traders and Inquisitors...

Although for what it's worth, there were no Inquisitors released in 2nd edition either. The models that were still around in 2nd ed were all Rogue Trader-era releases.

Ah yes you're right! There was also the Sensei figure released back in the RT days. I've got that somewhere, half painted and needing a strip and repaint. Just a shame it's such a shocking model.

As for my own grail(s), it'd mostly be a mix of various RT/1st edition models, mostly ones that I owned and sold in my youth (Squat Army, Metal & Plastic IG army, Metal Ork army, etc) Not in "army-sized" numbers, but enough for a squad of this and that to append to other armies.

For example, I've got the figures to make a dev squad of the original space marines - the ones with double-knobby knees and integral backpacks. Gonna paint them - how else? - as Crimson Fists!

I've slowly been regathering many of these figures, so the "grail" changes as we go. Got my LR kit, got my old Chaos Dreadnoughts, and so it goes..

I absolutely love the Adeptus Arbites models. Those are my holy grail. Unfortunately they tend to be too expensive for me, although currently I'm considering starting up an army of them, and slowly collecting them, model by model.

I have previously stated that my "holy grail" was the unrelreased Tyranid models. I have since decided that my "holy grail" is to have one of every Tyranid they have made.

Heh, mine's along a similar line... although I would be more after the actual figures I owned I sold an Ork army to a guy in Rockhampton waaaay back in 2nd edition. It was one of the first 40K armies I assembled (based mostly around the starter set models, and assembled along with my original Marine army) and I've regretted selling it ever since.

It's never going to happen, but it would be awesome to get it back... :(

Well, most of those are out there - it's just a matter of how much one is willing to pay..

Oh absolutely - I'd love to have the actual models back, but getting the same figures again is a good enough second place.

A little effort goes a long way. Try clicking on Akiras profile. Check out threads he has started, and look at the pictures in his gallery.

Sometimes it's just that easy.

My holy grail was a mint condition Warhammer Quest. I can go ahead and scratch that one off as it arrived today!
