I thought I'd start a little project log here to hopefully inspire me to paint and model a little bit more and play Skyrim a little less.
Orks have always been my true love in this game. I've had Ork armies since the dawn of the second edition. But with a love of orks comes the sobering reality of having to paint a massive horde army...
I consider my painting and modeling skills to only be about 'table ready' but hopefully the community can offer a little critique and the more talent can be inspired from ideas I've already stolen from someone more creative.
Speaking of stealing idea... here come some pictures.
I've got two projects on the burner right now. One is a trukk inspired by the many Hummer trukks posted here. The other is a "wider" battlewagon. I'll probably post more on that project as it progresses. Well you're not reading this for text, everyone wants to see pictures.
Its about 25% painted right now. My biggest problem on my Trukks is making the paint scraping and weathering look as good as other modelers. I could never get the 'sponge' technique to work, so I've just been freehanding the scratches.
Well thats enough for one post, thanks for letting me waste your time.
Looks pretty good. I'm impressed. Have you tried priming black, then painting the vehicle w/ boltgun metal, then putting your basecoat on? It's a bit of a pain to paint over, but it makes the weathering & chipping a bit easier ultimately.
Looking good. You may want to check out Arakasi's 'Dark Angelz' For inspiration ont he trucks as well. His suspension idea is..;. inspired to say the least. For the battlewagon, I'd suggest Sukigod's BW over on warseer. Looking forward to this!
Oh, and for the chipping paint a lighter, more faded colour first to represent the paint weathering. In your case, knarloc green might do the trick.
I've been insanely busy with work. My advice to any young'uns out there is to never show even the slightest bit of competency at your job. Otherwise you'll eventually be given more and more responsibility until you don't have time to paint toy soldiers.
In any case, after 2 weeks, I've finally finished with my Hummer project. The fruits of my labor below.
Now, my big question is what to start on now. I've got a partially finished battlewagon sitting on my desk. But I also really want to give my warlord a retinue of scratch built meganobz.
After perusing the rumors thread and all the buzz going around about 6th edition, kill kannon battlewagons could be absolute monsters (three kill kannon shots a turn if I'm reading correctly), but Meganobz seem like a lot of fun to build.
When I first started to build it, I realized it wasn't going to be much bigger than my trukks. And that won't stand. That won't stand at all.
In any case, here's a few pictures of my VERY WIP wagon.
I love the theme of da 'undred an Furst! Very stoked to see what kind of shenanigans paratrooper orks can get into
And great job on da humma! I actually just finished one for myself too. And I like that wider battlewagon too, I'm prolly gonna take that idea when I finally get around to building one
The wagon bounced as it raced through the crumbling streets of the once grand imperial city. Goresaw stared blankly at the desolation, his mind elsewhere. He remembered the fight here. The Humies called this place Redhaven. Apparently their Emperor had once gifted these Humies giant trees, and they had built their city of stone and steel around the giant trees. Even the dull mind of an Ork had to admit the city had been impressive five years ago. The Redwood trees from ancient Holly Terra had been genetically altered to form spires that touched the sky. Steel and stone turned the trees into giant cathedrals and palaces for the planet's ruling elite. But that was then. This is now.
The battlewagon slamming down a flight of stairs into the remains of a plaza snapped Goresaw out of his reverie. A grot bounced into Goresaw's lap, and looked up with a nervous smile at the boss. With one fluid motion Goresaw flung the gretchen out of the battlewagon in a display of bored cruelty. Yes, the fighting was then, this is now. Boring now.
The fighting had raged through the streets and in the trees. Every tree was connected by branch walkways and thoroughfares, so every building had to be defended as a hard point. If even a single lobby or floor was lost, the Orks could spread like a virus through the city, making the defense impossible. As more and more Orks poured into the city, the Imperials fell back up into the heights of their verdant towers. Every inch was fought for and paid in blood. The fighting became confused as battle lines disappeared, and madness reigned as the two sides engaged in close quarter fighting hundreds of feet above the city.
A far worse fate awaited the citizens of Redhaven then an Ork choppa. The Warlord (in a rare bit of wisdom) had ordered his Burna boyz to stay out of the city. However, as with any Ork, rules were meant to be broken. The Burnaz arrived and began torching every structure, regardless of who held it. The flames raged out of control as the entire city was consumed. Both Ork and Imperial became trapped in the tree towers, and the fighting became a desperate rush to ascend, trying to escape the blazing inferno below. Thousands died to the flames and smoke, never even having seen the enemy. Now all that remains of the ancient city is ash and dust.
Now that... had been a good scrap.
The Imperials were driven from the planet, and all that remained were slaves and scavengers. And boredom. Maybe that was why Goresaw had decided to take up Grimgobb's "invitation" to look at some of the Humie teknologie he had obtained. Of course the fat Deathskull would turn to the Blood Axe the moment they found Humie item they couldn't figure out themselves, thought Goresaw. Probably a waste of time that would only result in a minor skirmish... but still better than sitting around bored. That and the dreams. Every night Goresaw was visited by dreams. He couldn't remember any of the details, but ever morning he woke up and found the surroundings dull.
However, the current surroundings were anything but dull as the wagon approached the bustling Ork settlement based around the largest building on the planet. The abandoned Titan hanger.

But people don't come here to see my bad writing. Here's some bad conversions!
I think that's the first hummer conversion I've seen that looks properly orky and in-scale. I'm glad someone finally managed to pull it off and man, you did that and then some!
I come before you fine gentlemen today with a simple question?
Why don't they release a plastic meganob kit? Why do they force me to do things like this?
I thought I'd make a meganob to give me a little break from riviting the wagon. What turned into a little break turned into a 5 hour odyssey of mangling plasticard and minor x-acto cuts.
I started with the base template used by Drabber over at The Waaagh. Its only a good 'base' template though, because as any good Mek knows, its better to measure none and cut many times.
Goresaw wrote:

Actually there has been rumours of a plastic Mega Nobz kit in the works for the next ork codex including ork buggies and tracks. So if you can hold off maybe 6 or 7 years then you might just get your wish.
Really like the trukk extremely cool, and the paint job is great too. Like the widened battlewagon too.
I love having two days off on the weekends. Means I can waste a huge amount of time goofing off.
I finished the construction of a single Meganob. 2 to 4 more to go?

I played a small 1k point game down at the GW store. I decided to use my typical Kult of Speed philosophy (TRUKKZ!). The other guy had a fairly balanced smurf list (2 tacs, termies, dread, predator, 2 scouts, and captain Sicarus). I wanted to see how Meganobz performed and took a deathstar of a Warboss and 5 Meganobs in a Wagon with a deathroller. I definitely feel uncomfortable when you're outnumbered by the Marines... but turn two assaults with three trukks worth of sluga boyz helps to ease that feeling.
I made one really big tactical error which resulted in a draw. I left the Meganobz (taken as troops) and boss to hold my objective. My thought at the time was the unit would make the objective essentially untakable. And while they definitely did their job, It wasn't the best way to spend the points. The three trukkz worth of boyz did end of slaughtering the command squad, a chaplain, and a tac squad, I could have rolled his entire army up if the boss and nobz had stayed in the battlewagon (which its deathroller accounted for a dreadnought and predator!). Oh well, you live, you learn, you keep praying you get the first turn so you can fling trukkz full of boyz straight into the front of the enemy's lines.
BW and meganob are looking great! I use a unit of meganobz + warboss ina BW, and they do great, even if they don't always survive due to me being a bit overconfident in their abilities.
If you weren't overconfident you wouldn't be an ork (or in your case, a grot).
Another week, another Meganob.
I still have the fine detailing to do (more skull glyphs of course).
I've got a few more pieces of old ghazzykins to make another meganob out of.
Making the meganobz is a real treat, but I need to spend my time finishing the wagon. My plan is to make a "modular" deaf rolla so that I can switch it between a killcannon support wagon or a blitz/burna wagon. But all the plans in the world aren't going to cover this toiletpaper tube in plasticard... so back to work.
Well I'm an idiot - for some reason I was expecting skeletons as I thought you misspelled 'undead' in your title .....
Some really nice stuff going on, you definitely have the converting skills. I have to be honest however - I am getting a little bored of orks trucks to Hummers.
@ monkeytroll
Thats a pretty good idea. I think it would cut down a lot on my fabrication time. But to be honest, I kind of like the dichotomy created by leaving sections unarmored. I like the hard lines of the heavy plate combined with the smoother organic parts. Its like robocop... only dumber.
@Tortured-Robot
I never claimed to be the most original mek in the world
And sorry, no undead here. My orks are completely binary, existing in only states of alive or dead. They start games very much alive and end them very much dead. Nothing in between, as a far as I know.
Here's my second trukk if your'e tired of looking at Hummers. I wanted it to look like a lorry. Its my first real job working with plasticard so its hardly the most ambitious project in the world.
Yeah, you need the contrast with the mega-armour, I was thinking of cutting slices from the square tubing to use for the armour exactly as you have done, rather than gluing four bits together.
I wanted to do some paint today. I really did. But divine inspiration struck.
Gork himself came to me (or was it Mork?). He made me realize that my overall strategy is flawed. My strategy of Sluggaz + Trukkz = WAAAAGH was unsustainable. I can't just pray that I get the first turn. No, I need "protektun" for da boyz.
So I quickly rounded up parts to make Enjun Seeya Coggobb.
Does anyone have a good guide for painting blood splatter or splatter effects? I'm painting my warboss and per his name... his CC weapon needs a little blood on it.
He's coming along quite nicely and I'll have some pick up too.
Oh, and for all you grot lovers, I've got a little 'elper for my big mek mocked up. I'll post some picks of him in a bit.
Hummer and Lorry look great - no problems there. Was putting the bulkier wheels on the front planned or luck?
Goresaw wrote:After perusing the rumors thread and all the buzz going around about 6th edition, kill kannon battlewagons could be absolute monsters (three kill kannon shots a turn if I'm reading correctly)
Unfortunately, you still can only fire each weapon once per turn. On the upside, it has to take a lot of Weapon Destroyed to stop it firing though!
Your Meganobz look huge! Not that that is a bad thing - but it's making your Warboss look a bit weedy (which generally is a bad thing )
I like the concept of the Big Mek, but I think more details are needed before I'm completely sold - he seems a bit rough around the edges (modelling wise, not Ork wise - can't be too rough around the edges Ork wise...) Paint might make up for it though. The Mekanikum symbol is an ace idea - I might loot that
I put bigger wheels on the front intentionally. I'm saving two sets of small wheels to put on the back of a "big rig" truck. It's going to look like a semi-tractor trailer cab. At least in theory. We'll see when I eventually start making the plasticard fly.
I agree, the mek needs more fine detail GS work. I haven't had time since I started painting my warboss.
And have no fear, thats just a bit of perspective playing in on that photo. The warboss is still quite a bit bulker and bigger than the meganobz (although that one in the picture was a bit taller than I had intended, the rest are a bit smaller). The Ghazzikins model is still HUGE though, and I can't wait to show you guys the finished product this weekend (if everything goes to plan and another pipe doesn't burst in my bathroom).
My painting seriously decreased my warboss' effectiveness. The first game against the Tau got his battlewagon marker lighted and blown to pieces, leaving him to foot slog against crisis suits...
Second game he ended up getting insta-gibbed by an archon with a husk blade. Who knew those little panzies were so dead 'ard?!?
Grot for you guys. You may recognize the inspiration from those far better forge world models.
Cool stuff Goresaw! When I first saw the hummeresq trukk I actually thought that was an original model just orkified. Great job on all the card work. Really inspiring.
The poor guy. As much as he likes fighting, I imagine he also enjoys having his soul. Those mean old Dark Eldar. Maybe if they spent more time smiling they wouldn't need to drink so many people's souls.
@TaWaaagh
The squig is 98% amateur green stuff. The other 2% are the fangs (which are horns from one of the boyz heads). The photo's light is a bit to harsh and doesn't show a lot of the subtle shading I put on the squig. And his name, by the way is Mista Squiggles.
@fatty and M0rdian
Haha, yes I've seen them around. Such an austere group that truly understands the core of 40k. Rivets hold the universe together. Dare I say... more powerful that duct tape?
I've been super busy with work (when am I not)/
But project updates:
*10 new shoota boys fully painted (combined I now have a mob of 20 for a good firebase).
*5 new Nobz. The nobz kit is fantastic, so there's very little conversion here. Only major conversion is a Nob with WAAAAGH banner made of greenstuff and card. Need to finish a painboy for them.
*Battlewagon fabrication is complete. I'll get you some pictures soon. Its fully rivetted and I added a removable dethrolla. The deffrolla is removable attached to the reinforced ram that comes with the kit (its to cool to leave off). I think the wagon looks silly without it attached. The rolla itself took a full weekend of fabrication to assemble. Who knew that a toiletpaper tube would take so long to cover in plasticard plates and rivets?
*Big Rig trukk construction. I have the frame cut up and assembled. Two battlewagon tyres on the front and two little tires on the back. The grill and "engine" compartment are assembled. The goal is to make it look like a big Peterbilt semi. My goal when I get home is to assemble the driver's compartment.
Thanks Viktor. My only regret is I haven't built as many robots as you have.
As promised... a boatload of new pics.
First off, I have a show case now! In my 'office' area we've constructed some shelves to show off my growing army. Here's all my painted stuff on display.
Second off... my wagon.
Here's one next to a stock trukk for scale. He's a big boy.
Finally, as promised, the deffrolla is fully detachable.
were you swaering a lot during the building of the fully detachable deffrolla? i imagine so... getting all these parts to match for this is not a feat done lightly...!
and very good GS work i have to say too!
oh...and a nice shelf you have there... hope you fill it up nice and soon with your own works!
and thanks for the nice compliment for my robots^^
Here's my newest trukk inspired by several different dakkanaughts' work.
Its not glued together yet for easy of painting.
Here's the chassis
Driver and his rocket gunner. I have to admit I got lazy and just went for a rather simple rocket launcher.
Here's the grill and cabin top.
Finally, putting it all together.
Now I want to buy another trukk kit for the trailer...
I want to maybe even playtest some rules for a Bigg Rigg. The idea is you can use it to transport Kanz or big gun batteries...
Oh well.. now I must paint. Or finish putting together my nob squad. I'm sculpting a syringe hand for a custom painboy. Its shaping up quite nicely and will have pics soon.
Trukks all look great together. And I love that Mack truck too, this is some great stuff here. By the way, what was that grot that you showed a sneak peak of a while back?
@awesomesause the poor little guy has gotten forsaken as bigger projects came along. He's sitting next to his boss, the big Mek unpainted waiting for my next frenzy of painting. I've got a nob squad to paint now too... and I'm seriously considering getting some Dark Eldar to paint just to switch things up.
@Arakasi last time I checked, you're already there! Unless you just haven't bought your horde of trukkz!
@SevaggioSaky I'm not much of a marketing guy i guess, haha.
So I'm a dirty traitor. I bought a dark eldar battleford and a venom today. Wow, these models are so delicate looking. So very excellent. Compared to the bulky brutes I've been painting for years, this is a HUGE change. This is going to be quite exciting...
Spiky panzies. My orky side is enraged right now at my choice in modeling projects.
Bloodsplatter: I tried watering down some GW Blood Red, dipping a coffee straw (the really thin diameter ones) in it and blowing/spraying it. If you aim carefully you get a cool randomized effect. The trick is not watering it down too much so it doesn't run all over, and aiming just off the model so it catches the finest part of the spray.
I like your boyz, they look great. I think my favorite is the one knocking on the auspex.
what also works is 2 parts red wash and 1 part black wash. mix it with your large dry brush. place the brush with the hairs up about 4 inch away from your target. pull back your brush hairs. release and be amazed
But man, I started painting my panzie sailboat this weekend. Oi, its a complicated kit to paint/assemble. you have to half (I'm talking top/bottom and sides) assemble it and leave the other half unassembled for painting.
And I think I'm fairly decent at painting. But man, my DE faces are HORRIBLE looking. I mean, bush league. I paint ork flesh all the time, why isn't it serving me well here? Haha. I think I need to paint up a few more 'test' heads to try to get the technique down. The faces are so small, even the slightest bit of paint seems to destroy the detail utterly. I'll need to try a few different priming techniques as well as color schemes and combinations.
I've had OK luck with Tallarn flesh on my SM's. Don't know if DE have smaller features or if you're going for a different look. The trick for me is being really careful to prime with a fine spray.
Nice work! I especially like the Mek and the Ork back on the first page in your scale pic: the one who looks like he's puzzling over the auspex, trying to figure out how to use it
As the haze faded and the world came into focus, so did the pain. The bindings dug into Goresaw's tough flesh and sent agony coursing up and down his arms. Goresaw howled more out of anger than agony. A lash across his back drove him forward as he stumbled down the dark arched hall. Slowly the Ork's memory came back, how the dark glowing disk of unreality coalesced above the settlement; how the elegant bladed craft ravaged the settlement; and how he had been dragged down by ten... no twenty bladed assailants.
Even he had to admit the spikey panzie boyz were dead killy.
The hallway opened up into a grand ampatheatre. The sounds of hundred of jeering Dark Eldar filled the air. The floor was littered with strange fluids, most red. Above, perched on a dias was the Archon, gazing at the Ork with dismissive contempt. As he opened his mouth, the crowd fell silent.
"You are a pathetic weak creature. Not even worth of the sacrifice. Your kind feels so little suffering... a shame really. But we have use of you... oh yes. You shall entertain me for years to come, I believe. Ladies, would you provide our "guest" his "weapons"?
Giant steel gates creaked open and two wyches strode gracefully through the porticus. The walked with confidence carrying a strange cylinder and a sealed wooden box. Goresaw struggled against his bindings, pure rage building inside, but the collar and manacles shut down all but the weakest motor functions. He couldn't even scream at his captors.
The wyches arrived in front of the humbled Ork. The two unveiled the contents of their containers with lightning fast movement, and placed them in Goresaw's hands. A paintbrush and can.
"Oh yes my pet... I have much use for you. My children, bring our new worker our first piece. He has much to do. Very much to do..."
he that black and blue rim style is the same as i do on a commission painted tau army.
my only piece of critique is the fact you use the lightest color all around. i prefer to use the lightest color only on the raised edges just like a highlight.
I agree. I didn't mean the light blue as a highlight, its more of the actual paint scheme. I need to go back and actually add a final razor white highlight around the edge of the model. \
And yeah, the paint job is hardly that creative. This is so different than painting orks!

This is really great stuff herr Goresaw, i really like the meganob conversions and your hummer is probabliy one of the better ones i've seen. Cant wait to see what your mech shop produces next!!
Been obsessed with Dark Eldar lately. I've played a few games, and its so much fun to finally be able to SHOOT! I love aggressive in your face armies, which of course does not describe orkz . But its so nice to be able to finally give rather than completely receive the first turn or two, then smash things with Wyches. My only criticism of the army is they aren't green.
Oh wait, mine are!
Its kind of weird, the pictures actually look better zoomed in from the gallery.
I'm at a crisis. I'm ALMOST OUT OF PLASTIC TO PAINT! Only two hellions left. Must pay a visit to my FLGS...
So without further adieu.... dark eldar. Lots of dark eldar. My Kabal of the Carrion Dawn and Kult of the Razor Gale.

Automatically Appended Next Post: Some fluff...
Spoiler:
The canvas would be the Webway. The colors subtly shifted from red to purple to white. Viewed strictly by sight, it was beautiful; but all travelers of the Webway felt Her thirst lurking just beyond the ancient barriers the Old Ones had erected. The canvas was ready, but the paints would arrive shortly, Lady Maehem thought.
She turned to face the wizened mon-keigh and his two Ogryn guards. Despite his ancient appearance and hobbled stature, power radiated from his form. The renegade primarus psyker Belaphon looked up from his scrying bones and stared past the Archon.
"Thank you my dear, your assistance is invaluable as always." Lady Maehem replied in a patronizing fashion in her own tongue. "Position our craft. Its time to create our art."
"I care nothing for your thanks. Only your weaponry." The psyker croaked. As he stated this, the two Ogryns stood up taller to emphasize his point. The ugly burly creatures had burlap sacks covering their disfigured faces. They would have been imposing to a lesser race.
"My dear friend, we have such a beautiful arrangement, do not sully it with negativity." The Archon then turned and leapt from the Raider onto a nimble Venom. The craft rocketed off to join the small fleet that was positioning itself. Most Kabals would use slaves. Maehem long ago realized that, although slaves offer... consistent results, if you want exceptional performance, mercenaries were needed. Avarice is a much better motivator than pain.
Suddenly the Webway in front them shifted from reds and purples to blue and green. A massive dark tumor began to grow and bubble from the immaterium. A massive slave barge burst into existence, its engines directly facing the small fleet of the Carrion Dawn's craft. The old psyker was precise as always; the ambushing craft were hidden in its engine wash. The slave barge's attendant craft dartung around it like flies on a corpse.
A damaged corpse, Maehem noted. The Kabal of the Flayed Skull's latest slave raid had apparently encountered a bit of... resistance. Such a pity "someone" had alerted imperial forces to the impending realspace raid and had allowed them time to scramble a few defense monitors to soften up the Kabal's strike. It would be an easy thing to overpower the much diminished escort and claim her prize.
"Cripple the engines. Destroy the escort." The only response to her words was the whine of dozens of dark lances powering up. In a flash of unlight the battle commenced...
I'm almost finished painting my second Wych raider.
I played a few more games with my DE, and its definitely a learning process. This army is MUCH harder to use than my orks. I know how to play orks. You go big or you go home. The only way to play Orks is to act like one, and damn the risk, rev the trukkz and wagons, scream WAAAGH and chaaaaaaaaaaarge! Dark Eldar require a strange mix of daring and conservative play, with a dash of sneakiness thrown in for good measure.
I played a "team" game last weekend. I was paired with a wolves player (each fielded 1k points) against a foot guard and deathwing player. The wolves player didn't have the best list... 3 squads of greyhunters, a single unsupported thundercav lord, and a single squad of long fangs with what I would call an 'eclectic' mish mash of heavy weapons. I was packing two ravagers, 1 wych raider, 2 kabalite venoms, 1 three man reaver squad and a five strong squad of hellions. Not exactly the strongest list, but to get to 1k I need to field every model in my small collection .
The IG Player was packing squad after squad after squad of normal IG guys with heavy weapons. The deathwing player fielded (no suprise) TERMINATORS! Shocking I know.
We had spearhead deployment (which really psyched me out and led to some issues, more on this later). Even though we had first turn, I set up hidden. The IG player hid his demolisher and plasma armored behind a forward bastion and the remaining guard set up in a commanding position on a hill. Deathwing set up in our faces as close as we could get. Mission was Seize Ground, with two objectives well held by them, two well held by us, and one objective nicely set up on our side but in open terrain (they set this one up as a trap. It worked...)
They didn't seize so turn one I whipped my sailboats out and opened fire on... pretty much nothing. I was trying to stay at 36 inches to minimize return fire and start picking apart the guard squads. I killed a lascannon with lucky wound wrap but thats about it. Their turn led me to the first lesson of the day... most guard heavy weapons are 48 inch range...
The start of turn two saw all but two of my boats burning, with the remaining crew stunned. At this point I knew I was merely playing for a draw, as the wolves player was all but useless. Having no long ranged weaponry other than a longfang squad that was delightfully bunched together for their plasma sentinel (boooom), we had no return fire. This proceeded for 5 agonizing turns. It suffices to say we conceded on turn five as even a draw became impossible.
So, lessons learned. Picking about an enemy army isn't about using DE's mobility to attack choice targets. DE mobility is about attacking targets while minimizing return fire. If the enemy can bring every single gun in his army to bear against something in yours, its going to be a total fail game.
Second, don't reveal yourself unless you really have something to shoot at. I popped out and wasted my shots on some termis (no threat at the time). I should have patiently waited for him to move his armor out into the open then pounce.
Third.. take Advanced Aethersails on the wych boats. Yes in a standard pitched battle you can sometimes get a turn one assault off with the standard raider shimmy. However, if you end up getting spearhead, god help you.
I look forward to my next horrible loss as I continue to learn how to use this incredibly difficult army.
And yes, there's more fluff!
Spoiler:
(continuing from the story above)
Dracon Ychrix hunched on his throne in the command sphere of the slave barge Torment. The dim lights briefly flickered casting the bridge into darkness. However, if anger could light a space, the command sphere would be positively incandescent. The Dracon observed the hololiths reviewing the damage reports. First the cursed mon'keigh, and now these scavengers? The pirates had no markings, but only a small kabal would be foolish enough to challenge the Flayed Skull. Once their identity was pried screaming out of the soon to be captives, retribution would be swift.
The Torment was now drifting, its drives crippled by surgical strikes. It would be an easy repair, were not the engines now held by the rival kabal. Rather than fight, he had ordered his few remaining escorts back to the Dark City. He dared not use open coms, as it would undoubtedly attract more capable predators before any help would arrive. It would be hours before the Kabal would be able to send a response team. However, upon viewing the anemic forces boarding his barge, he was not concerned. The other hololiths displayed images of unmarked Raiders and Venoms pulling up to the rear of the ship and depositing Wyches and Kablites. Many empty transports docked as well and remained. Such hubris. The fools think they would actually be able to steal the slaves that Ychrix had rightfully obtained?
The Dracon thought to himself but a moment. The slave barge held twice as many warriors as this small raiding force had. The raiders would attempt to reach the slave holds to slaughter some of the captives. Being drunk on pain would be the only way they could possibly hope to overpower the ship's crew. With a few terse commands, the trap was set. The Dracon reclined in his throne, hands pressed together, as a slow devious smile crept across his face.
*****
Lady Maehem led the rampage through the ship. The rival Kabal's warriors were no match in close quarters for the wyches. The subdermal com relayed quick reports from the other boarding teams. The raid was going well, the ship's guardians were positively melting beneath their fury.
The Archon rushed down the dark corridors, cutting down all in her path. A squad of Flayed Skull Kabalites held the next junction, taking cover in the shadows of curved bulk heads. They opened fire as Maehem charged down the corridor. In deft dodge, followed by a roll, then a brief run along the wall, she was into their lines. The combat drugs burned in her veins as her cauterblade found its mark over and over. The whole world seemed to move agonizingly slowly while her own synapse blazed with stimuli. A kabalite thrust clumsily with a wicked blade. The Lady deftly pirouetted, using the cauterblade to remove the Kablite's legs in one deft slash. Before the body hit the ground, she had quickly cut twice more to remove the arms. The torso slammed into the deck limbless, but quite alive. Maehem and her kabal favored the cauterblades because the searing heat of the power weapon combined with anti-coagulant serums left the victims maimed and quite alive for later 'collection.'
As the battle raged around her, Maehem's mind was elsewhere. It was only in the haze of combat did her mind truly operate at its peak. Plots and schemes laid bare before her as her enemies fell before her. Hellions of the Poison Quill's seizure of the Archon Dyson's skinfish farms would lead to negotiations with Archon Sykorax in the neutral ground of Abbey's fall. Two level's down, Lady Samakrish owned the territory and had been renovating the hab-block. Her latest raid has obtained void mines from the Kabal of the Dark Reach. Samakrish often dealt with the Wyches of the Impaled Prey, who had driven the Hellions of the Poison Quill from their territory. Samakrish would plant the void mines and Sykorax and Dyson would be assassinated by the collapsing of the hab-sector. How best to utilize this information. Blackmail Samakrish? Buy up skinfish futures and benefit from the collapse of the supply chain? Use this information to warn Sykorax and forge a temporary alliance? Her mind whirled as did her slashing form.

The darkness in the cavernous slave hold was choking. Almost as oppressive as the chill in the air. The dim lights struggled against the darkness to illuminate the elevator platform at the center of the hold. Ychrix waited patiently for their guests to arrive, on the catwalk that ringed the massive hold. The catwalk was easily 50 meters from the center of the hold. Alarm klaxons began to chime as the hatch opened and the elevator's grinding ascent could be heard. Maehem and her coterie of Wyches ascended into the center of the massive slave pen, coiled like a serpent ready to strike. They as one drew their blades and let loose a cry of adulation for the slaughter that was about to commence.
The cry died on their lips as they stood startled. The hold was completely empty.
"Missing something?" Ychrix stepped from the shadows, mockingly applauding the raider's performance. The wyches drew their splinter pistols as one and took aim.
"I would put those down. Its so rude." His words left thin wisps of vapor in the cold. To punctuate the words, the sound of shredders and blasters powering up cut through the darkness. "My trueborn do not appreciate your manners. We took all this time to prepare this room for you, clean it up, and this is how you repay me?"
Maehem nodded to the wyches, and they dropped their weapons. The Dracon continued to gloat, "Your friends as we speak are being led into similar traps. I am glad you came, however. You and your friends will be my guests for a long... long time. Every thing you shall utter from this day shall be nothing more than a scream... do you have any last words before you join my symphony?"
Maehem looked defiantly back at the Dracon, "Yes my dear, I do. You'd think the prosperous Kabal of the Flayed Skull could afford to adequately light and heat their barges. Its rather cold in here, don't you think?"
The darkness... the "empty" Raiders... the cold... No!
Hisssssssssssss....
"OPEN FIRE, CUT THEM DOWN!" the Dracon frantically screamed. The only reply was the sound of the last trueborn slumping to the ground, his throat silently cut.
The last thing the Dracon heard before the Mandrakes took him was "Our deal is complete, he is yours as promised." Then the shadows enveloped him.
******
Two hours later the repairs on the barge were complete, as was the change in management. Maehem sat in the command sphere noting how completely uncomfortable the throne was. Some people just need a woman's touch... Redecorating would have to wait however, step two of the scheme could not wait. "Set course for Gamma Gamma Phi Ro. The eastern fringe awaits..."
Here's some unpainted/assembled preliminary pics. Really no serious conversions on this one. I just adjusted the wing position (the kit's second set of big shootaz make the wings angle up and I don't like that, so I used green stuff to keep them straight).
The pilot and the grot have some amazing heads. Here's a close shot of the pilot and a shot of some of the different heads.
As a bonus, here's a picture of the BOMB! I think I'll be making some objective markers with it.
Its a BIG kit. Here's a size comparison with my endlessly WIP battlewagon.
Just put my kit together, gotta say it's probably my favorite ork kit to date. Lotsa options for the little details, like the exhaust, jet engine, wing position. Plus now I have a ton of leftover bits from the bommer portions of the kit.
I went with the angled wings on mine, but the perpendicular wings look pretty good as well. Can't wait to see some paint on it (so i can get ideas for mine )
Dakka jet is almost done. I tried to paint it up like a Tuskegee P-51 mustang (even though it looks like a Russian Mig, haha). I should have some pics up as soon as I finish the fuel tanks and the base.
I finished deciding on the fluff for my army too, so for the fluff minded, it spoilered below.
Spoiler:
Ask any inquisitor what the most dangerous thing in the universe is. They will all give the same answer. It is not fleets or armies or even the warp itself. No, the most dangerous thing in the galaxy is an idea...
The grots shifted nervously as the more technically minded worked with the machine's gubbinz. They had been working on it for over 5 minutes trying to get the humie machine to work again as it had in the Mek's shop. The corpulent warlord glared down upon them from his throne fashioned from the command bridge of a warhound titan. The Grand Mekistrate, Krankskull Da Kollecta's stomach growled, causing the grots to work even more furiously.
Krankskull held his court in the ruins of an imperial titan hanger. It was the only building on the planet big enough to hold his "kollektun." Massive piles of trashes and treasures reached toward the ceiling of the once sacred shrine of the Omnissiah. Avalanches of junk were an hourly occurrence, and the Runtherds had to work overtime to keep enough grots available for "sortin" through the piles to make sure Krankskull had one of everything.
Word had reached Krankskull that one of Goresaw's Meks had found a humie machine that Krankskull did not have. Goresaw was summoned to render "tribute" to the planetary warlord. Goresaw was bored staring at his nearly panicking grotz, wishing he was back in his settlement racing his buggy with his drinking buddy Hurk. One of the grots glancing around frantically finally noticed the problem and dashed over to the wall and plugged in the machine labeled only with the words "D" "V" "D".
The humie machine's screen flashed to life and pictures began to dance across its surface. Krankskull craned his neck to look at the flickering images. The monitor showed images of what could only be a gigantic humie party. Scenes containing massive formations of wagons and planes. Humie skirmishing through the blackened ruins of once great cities. Massive explosions annihilating entire cities.
Krankskull rumbled "Wotz dat? Lookz ded great"
Goresaw, being a Blood Axe, understood humie on a basic level and translated for the Warlord. "Fing says dat the humie Amerikanz and Jermanz was fightin, and the Amerikanz won."
Krankskull sat for a second, finger deep in his nose. It was obvious the Mekistrate was thinking. After a minute, Krankskull bellowed, "Oi, you mean ta tell me da 'oomiez is having a party and didn't invite us?!?!?!"
Goresaw, being an expert on all things human responded eagerly, "Not just dat boss, but when 'oomies fight other 'oomies, da Eye boyz show up wif der big ships and extormi... extermi... dey blow up da planet!"
Krankskull began looking about his throne room at his massive piles of junk, and looked directly as his chief Big Mek and bellowed "Does I 'ave a ship dat blowz up planetz????" The Mek sheepishly shook his head no.
Krankskull roared and backhanded the Mek with his powerklaw. He turned to his Nobz and issued his orders. "Gaver da boyz. Build da shipz. I'z gunna 'ave me one of dem Eye boy shipz!"
The Nobz and grotz scrambled off to do their bosses bidding, except for one little Gretchen. He looked up at Krankskull and said "Boss, if da Eye Boyz only come if 'oomies fight 'oomies, iz dey gonna show up fer us?"
Krankskull stopped for a second, considering the grot's logic. Anger crept across his face as he couldn't think of a solution to the obvious problem... Orkez isn't 'oomies...
Goresaw spoke up before Krankskull could fly into another rage. "Boss, why don't we'z pretend to be 'oomie? We'll paint up our wagonz and jetz to look like dem Jermanz and Amerikanz. Da 'oomiez won't know da difference!"
WAAAAGH was coming. Worlds would burn, Empires cast down, all because of a simple, stupid idea.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Finished Jet.
A little nose art. Its the Hot Grot. Kind of a bad picture, but then again its also a bad paint job
The Storm Talon needs extensive plasticard work to make it look good. The GW store owner opened one up and put it together... and its stumpy. Ridiculously stumpy. Its a very small kit. The Dakkajet dwarfs it. The tail fin is in dire need of extension. There's potential, but it will need a lot of work to bring out the finer points of the kit.
The WAAAGH continues. FINALLY finished the basic battlewagon. I need to finish the cannon, but until I see what 6th is going to do to vehicle rules, I'm probably just going to run it naked. I've got meganobz and a big mek to paint after all.
Here's the deffrolla attached. I love its modular nature. If it gets in the way, I just pop it off.
Holy crap love your conversions. Your army theme is really cool as well. But I think the coolest thing I saw so far. Which I didnt catch at first was the poster girl ork on the side of your fighta. That detail alone make that on Favorite one I've seen painted so far. Pure awesome.
I'm Warlord Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka an' I speak wiv da word of da gods. We iz gonna stomp da 'ooniverse flat an' kill anyfing that fights back. We iz gonna do this coz' we're Orks an' we was made to fight an' win"
-Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, the Beast of Armageddon, Prophet of the Waaagh!
I wanted to show you the Ghazghkull model I painted. The big G is without a doubt one of the most powerful special characters in the game, and should hold a special place in the heart of any proper green blooded Ork player out there.
But first, I finished Painting Enjun Seeya Cog'gobb, and his oiler, Fuggit.
And finally, The man,or ork himself, Big G. Oh and who could forget his NUMBA ONE BANNA WAVER
I painted him when I was about 14, haha. I'm going to strip him and repaint him to my current standards. Its kind of amazing how far I've come in my painting after all these years, and really how far I have to go still.
I've played a few games, and fearless boyz squads are REALLY good. Shoota boyz are REALLY good.
Saddly, that makes Trukk boyz REALLY bad by comparison.
THEY MAY TAKE OUR HULL POINTS, BUT THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OUR WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!
I still love mech. No glance in the world is going to change that. So the only solution is of course, battlewagons!
Regular battlewagons are nice, but they are soooooo expensive. Solution? Leman Russ Demolishers with a few "modifications" make a great choice to base a battlewagon on.
Here's some WIP shots.
I hope its fairly recognizable as the tank I was modeling it after.
I have a dilemma that I'd like to ask for your opinions. Functionally, all wagons need deffrollaz. Problem is, I don't want to put a conventional deffrolla on this. It just doesn't look right. Plus it takes a long time to custom build one, heh.
I was thinking a big dozer blade, but thats not really a deff rolla (WYSIWYG). Does anyone have any alternative ideas on how to convey a deff rolla without actually making it another steam roller like apparatus?
How good is REALLY good? (On the subject of shoota boyz) Any highlights of the games?
And what if you add a sort of mouth to the tank? As in a form of gob for tanks. Or drills? Or just some well placed spikes to impale anybody in the way?
looking very nice! I love mech myself, though havent played any 6th to see how my lists fare.... from what Ive been hearing the outlook is grim.
I really like what youve done with the tank, and I second the drill/gob idea. Something that just gives the image of completely mauling whatever is in front of it. Saws, drills, all that jazz!
I've played quite a few games of 6th so far. Here are my impressions.
The biggest change to the ork army is the removal of fearless wounds. Orks have always been an attrition army. Against most things, orks don't really win the first assault phase. We are meant to grind down the enemy in wave after wave of attacks. Losing 20 boyz a turn is perfectly acceptable when you have 120+. The problem was, it was very easy to have squads absolutely explode thanks to fearless wounds. Lose a combat by 10, lose 10 more. Thats gone now. For around 220 points you get a 31 wound unit that simply will not die.
This just further highlights what was already wrong with Trukks. They just don't carry enough boyz to keep the squad effective. The moment you start losing boyz (which is coincidentally when they blow the trukk up) you're not fearless anymore. Thats hugely bad. The chance for all vehicles to explode is greatly reduced in the new rules (reduction of Hull points results in a wrecked result, and reduction of hull points is going to be the primary method of killing vehicles)... except for trukkz. Thanks to ramshackle, the damn thing is STILL going to blow up. All the time. (Fatty, the trukkz have 3 hull points. Only things with less than three are buggies and Killa Kanz at 2).
So, more so than ever, large squads of boyz are good. Large squads of shoota boyz are even better. You've already seen the stats that a 30 man shoota mob which is roughly equivalent points to a 10 man tactical squad of space marines; will outshoot said space marines. The orks will cause on average 10 wounds, the marines will cause 6-7. The marines will lose about 3 a turn and the orks about 5 (assuming cover). Thats definitely a losing proposition for any army. (I recognize this is a fallacy because the marines will be taking heavy weapons, etc, but the points remain, 30 shoota shots is scary, and cheap). Many people also scoff at overwatch. Do you really want to try to try to weather that amount of fire (on 'average' 5 wounds), and then get stuck into a combat for the rest of the game with a HUGE block of fearless orks? I'll trade my cheap unit for your deathstar any day of the week.
Cons to the horde approach now are cover. Models have cover on a model by model basis. Its impossible to get cover for 30 boyz without a KFF running about. So the horde is not as durable as it once was to shooting. However, it is much more durable in CC. The other con (which affects all orks) is the challenge. The good old PK nob used to be the stalwart protector of the boyz. Able to punish any bruiser or bully who came into attack our lovable crew. Its not that way anymore. Thanks to challenges, most character can slaughter the nob out right, or will trade mutual kills in a challenge. So you are either going to lose your nob, or lose his attacks as he will be hiding from the challenge. Leaving the bully free to kill boyz. So thats bad, but not really terrible, as these kind of characters tend to cost roughly the same points as your boyz mob. And if your properly hording your boyz like you should, you don't care if he spends the next 2-3 game turns minimum killing your boyz.
As for the viability of kult of speed lists. Mech is not dead for orkz. Most definitely not. The assaulting out of transports nerfs do not affect us at all as all our vehicles are open topped.
Mech isn't improved for orkz, but it isn't really nerfed either. Its just different.
Pro: Vehicles are all faster now. Much faster. Thanks to all vehicles being able to take flat out moves, battlewagons can move 18 inches. You are pretty much guaranteed to be in the opponents deployment zone on turn two. Trukkz can move 24.
Con: You must now dismount at 6 inches. You may then take a normal move of six (from the hull, no more free 2 inches). So basically we lose about 2 inches of guaranteed movement + we are now subject to the whims of difficult terrain now for the other 6 inches. You will have to be more careful with your assaults. You also can't count on Ghazzy giving you the full 6 inch fleet. (fleet was nerfed across the board for everyone). So mech in my opinion is a little slower now, but not by much.
Pro: Hull points. On one hand, yes 3 glances blow up a trukk. 4 knock out a battlewagon. But honestly ask yourself, if your opponent glanced either one of those open topped vehicles that many times in 5th, how many of your open topped vehicles actually survived this? Glances no longer cause damage results. So now on average, your trukkz and wagons are actually EFFECTIVE until they die. You don't have stunned, and immobilized results mucking up your plans anymore. Sure your trukks will still be dead on turn two and maybe a wagon or two, but who cares, they actually got to move the first essential turn. And now your opponent has 90+ boyz in his deployment zone. And 90 boyz in your opponents deployment zone on turn two makes an ork player happy on a level thats hard to describe.
Wash: Vehicles are easier to hit. Much easier. If your transports are delivering boyz, they're very close to enemy close combat reprisal. Now that all vehicles are auto hit or hit on 3+ in CC, its very very easy to wreck our vehicles in CC. I consider this a wash because it is now also very easy for our boyz to wreck the enemy's vehicles.
Con: Deff rollaz are less useful. You may only disembark after 6 inches of vehicle movement. Then the vehicles movement MUST end. So you cannot move 12 to get that lovely deff rolla on the same turn as the boyz hopping out (unless your opponent is an idiot and left his vehicle 6 inches from your gigantic spikey rolling death machine). I don't see deff rollaz getting many hits in anymore because thanks to glances (and how easy it is to get side armor shots on the long battlewagon) and close combat, your wagons won't really be surviving past turn two. (I would still take the deff rolla however to continue to make your wagons a credible threat and for the terrain rerolls).
All in all, the game has changed for everyone, but for us, its still business as usual. Our overall strategy is still pretty much the same. Flood the board with targets and push the enemy into a corner because he's terrified of you. While he's being pushed further and further into his deployment zone, use grot/cheap boyz squads to take the objectives.
I'm building a DE beast pack on a budget. Trying to keep this cheap. I can't afford $360 for a pack using 'official' GW models.
Here are my razorwings.
Now the problem is, what do I do for Khymarae ? I want to keep the pack Tyranid looking (the Haemonculous is genetically modifying and growing Tyranids for the wyches to fight). The problem is, the tyranid 'calvary models' are waaaay to expensive. Raveners are too pricey for my blood, and there aren't a big supply of cheap used ones on ebay. There are a lot of tyranid warriors, but I want to use them as Clawed Fiends (if I decide to field any). Hormagaunts are too small. Genestealers are ugly ugly models. Tyrant Guard suffer from the same problem that they're ungodly expensive.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to make some cool looking dog like tyranids?
Could you do something with the warriors using the bodies in a more horizontal position? Then have the clawed fiends in the more traditional upright pose? Maybe two sets of legs...
