I was thinking of making my second IG Army be a Luna from MiP: FiM themed one, and was wondering if this would make many other Warhammer fans angry.
IE: Tanks and troops have void-space camo, flags have moons or the symbols of night or the moon on them.
I thought it would be a nice idea, considering I was told it was creative of me to paint my first regiment with Volcanic camo, and I like thinking outside the box when it comes to writing and painting for my regiments.
Oh, and the name for the regiment would be, Luna's Legion, I know a bit to Space Mariney but it works.
Thank you for any input and advice, just trying not to step on peoples toes.
Sounds immature, yes, but when you surf the net a lot like I do and encounter Ponies everywhere you get very very VERY tired and upset about it, should you not like them. And I don't quite frankly - the adverts as a child drove me mad and having a revamped cartoon will not change my opinion.
I won't lie though - the idea sounded alright until the name got mentioned - kinda threw me off the idea. Space/Galaxy theme? Awesome. Pony names and additional themes? Not awesome.
I don't think most people will even notice it's Pony-themed unless your Guardsmen have cutiemarks on them, and even then they have to be pretty obvious or people will just think they're typical army insignia.
Void-space camo and a lunar theme sounds cool. Go for it. If whoever you're playing with happens to be into My Little Pony, let them in on it.

My whole idea on the matter is trying to find a balance.
Oh and yes my friend mentioned to me that Luna is the name of Holy Terra's moon, so I guess Luna's Legion could be a fluff worthy name.

Tha'ts actually a fair point, so in a sense you can dodge the whole Pony reference if you wanted to anyway.
I like that actually. But, as I said - your army, your choice. Do what pleases you.
I would play against it, even though I dont agree with the fanbase, as in, there's bad blood between me and them, but your models, your choice of theme and I wouldn't judge.
Okay, for the idiots who are ill-informed (myself included), where did the big hit of MLP come in from? Seriously, it was a little girls cartoon when I was in my teens, I think-never really paid it much attention. But I've seen it in plenty of warhammer demotivational posters and around the 'net. Is it a meme? Or is it actually popular (God forbid)? I have no clue as to the point of it, so somebody...help me understand why something like MLP is what it is.

It's a very popular show, because of it's animation quality, and it's timeless humor, Iv watched it and enjoyed it.
Dedicated watchers of the show are referred to as "Bronys". You can find many cross overs into the 40k Universe in fan-art.
I'm doing the same. But with an empire army.
Honestly. Why should they care? if you are playing an army you painted and worked and they are immature to not play against your army becaue it is themed around something they dont like then dont play.
But i will say this. the army will outlast the show. so think of that. and you would have to explain MLP to people in the real world.

Well, first you need to understand that the internet and real world aren't the same in that on the internet posting such an idea would be met with a wall of uppercase rage. If you did it with someone in person who felt the same, they would simply shake their head and worst case scenario not play you.
If you went to a FLGS and ran a MLP army, and the person in front of you started screaming profanity and general expressing angst in ones hindquarters, it begs the question. Which of the two, being him and you, has the bigger personal issues that need sorting out?
I think it's a great idea, but my personal degree of manliness would dictate that I would be the guy who doesn't play you, but secretly thinks your army is pretty effin cool. Nothing personal, I just can't be seen in public associating with such things.

There's a new cartoon series of MLP that is, apparently, cell-shaded animation with CGI assistance. It's apparently very popular.
I've not seen an episode and have absolutely no plans to change that. Ignorance is Strength, and all of that.
Apparently, however, there is a term for male fans of the show, called "bronies". This is a Thing that has Happened. They are, as one might expect, scary.
EDIT: I think the OP's tanks should have the branding marks... whatever the show refers to them as... on their rear flanks.

Generally it's a well executed girls show that proved that if the quality is high enough even a girls show can appeal to boys too. I really don't get the angle some people play in regards to not wanting to watch it but not understand why it's popular. If you watch the show and you don't like it, well there you go, you no longer have to wonder about it. If you watch it and you like it, congrats, you found something else that adds joy to your life. Neither situation ends poorly.
Seriously guys, being too much of a guy to watch mlp is just like saying your too much of a normal person to not invest time in trying out d&d or playing video games. At the end of the day you're just depriving yourself of something that you might end up enjoying. If you watch the show, you like it, but fear for your precious image, come play paintball with me and take a shot to the neck and keep on playing. You'll be pretty manly in my book

LOL this entire thread just made me laugh (no offense)
I wouldnt mind playing this army and when I lose it would be a funny story to tell to my freinds, so no big deal.
Because I'm 35 years old and have absolutely zero interest in watching a cartoon for girls. In fact, I have less than zero interest. My interest level is rated somewhere in the negative thousands of Give-A-Gaks. In fact, I could not possibly Give-A-Gak less about watching MLP. I have reached True Absolute Zero on the Give-A-Gak scale.

Could you guys post some more pictures!
Thank you! I always love making people laugh.
This is going to earn me a lot of IG hate, but I love this picture.
Ill admit it though, a little part of me loved the idea of making people who hate MLP angry by making a army based on 1 of the Princesses in the series.

Just call it pyschological warfare. If the opponent is too busy being consumed with rage, he wont pay attention to you flanking half your army and tabling him on Turn 3!
LOl i just started watching the first MLP episode and found it not half bad. It makes no sense that they were being pulled in a carriage by other horses though. The funniest but was that the old granny had a hot pie on her ass

You like Warhammer 40k? And you think things should *gasp* make SENSE!?!?!? HERESY I SAY!
Now who would nt be afraid of a magical pony with powerarmor and a jetpack. It gives me night mares just thinking about, You dont even want to know what that picture made me do.

There's three kinds of ponies.
Unicorns, Earth Ponies, and the Pegsus's.
Rainbow Dash, the Space Marined pony in the picture is a pegasus, so she only has wings, which makes sense to paint her as a Assault Marine.

Therefore no.
It would be any army based on the Princess from the popular show, My little pony Friendship is magic.
Basically a Imperial Guard Regiment based on this pony:

Oh come on. I've never watched an episode, but I know MlP = My Little Pony and FiM = Friendship is Magic. You could've read the rest of the posts if confused...
I'd have no problem whatsoever playing this army. It's your hobby: enjoy it however you choose, and as it clearly doesn't infringe on my enjoyment of the game, go for it! As has already been said, funny story to tell friends
Why? I loathe MLP. I loathe "hello kitty". I loathe "kawaii" and "chibi" and everything that goes with it. FWIW I also loathe the angry marines and every other "meme" themed 'army' out there, but I'm a grumpy old man-gamer who still thinks kids don't belong in the hobby (because I was never a "child" gamer and my peers were also not "child" gamers.). We never had to deal with any of that crap.
Would it trigger nerdrage in other 40k players? Yes.
I don't see how your army OP causes any issues. Am I misunderstanding or are you simply using a color scheme that reflects Luna's own colors or are you actually converting models to look like ponies? If all you are doing is painting moons and other symbols that look like they could fit with Luna's theme and Nightmare Moon's theme I don't see how this would be an issue for anyone. Most people probably won't even realize that the moons came from MLP unless they were heavily exposed to it which means they are most likely a MLP fan anyways.
I personally think the idea is really cool, since I have a feeling this isn't a joke for you, but rather a serious army idea which will incorporate icons that reflect the moon and space. This is far different from seeing Garden Necrons or any other idea that people have come up with for any army. So long as the models match what they are supposed to be and Wargear is there I don't think anyone should have a right to refuse to play you.
As a Brony myself I have to say its cool and I like seeing crossovers like that in the game and if you need a Theme Song for your army I think this fits the bill pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf0tYs5U5RI
Lots of grown men like anime or other things that are for kids. Now gender is just a THING created by society. that is what part of bronydom is. Breaking down established gender stereotype. If bronys where transformer fans no one would have an issue. but because it is for girls we are suddenly considered weird and possibly disturbed? Question: Why are horses considered girly? Why is pink? Why is a skirt? Why is a dress? Because we SAY THEY ARE.
Also learn to deal with so called "Homofied" stuff because gender walls are breaking more and more everyday.
But on topic OP. if you humanize luna make he look like this.
Big picture inside
Right generally its anime that is more adult orientated. That which is not so adult orientated is marketed towards the female audience, hence it being kawaii etc.. And the gender thing created by society is an age old debate, but the fact still remains that whether nurture or nature there are hard wired settings. Horses, pink, skirts, and dresses are NOT considered girly because we say they are, they are considered girly because they ARE things orientated with femininity.. not masculinity. Pink for instance is genetically wired into our brains to be a non aggressive color. Whether that comes from years of conditioning or from years of evolution is debated but it is FACT.
And yes because it is for children and for girls it is disturbing.. Whats disturbing is that people seem to not think so. Michael Jackson for instance, his magical house with merry go rounds and slides (and giant toy horses), did it seem like a mentally healthy environment for a grown man? I worked at a Carnivale for quite a while and I can tell you from first hand experience that the grown ass men that are interested in kiddie activities are not healthy.
Angry? Probably not. Don't expect to get great paint/fluff/theme scores though.
Adult My Little Pony fans are often, in my personal experience, a bit "fringe" socially, around the level of stereotypical "TFG" wargames players that we all encounter in this hobby from time to time. Now, I am not saying that because you like My Little Pony you are automatically a horrible social outcast. You could be the most cool/normal/whatever person in the universe and like My Little Pony for all I know. Maybe My Little Pony fans being slightly "off" is just a thing local to my city, or to things I have seen on the internet.
But the My Little Pony fans that I know in real life are weird people. They tend to dress and/or act incompetently in social situations, and seem like a "lazy/ironic" crowd of people that forgot that they were supposed to be liking a girl's children's television show ironically and started becoming way too enthusiastic about it. Personally I used to play Dungeons and Dragons casually with a pretty average crowd of people, but recently I have noticed that the 18-21 "geek" demographic is becoming filled with the "My Little Pony fan" type. It makes it hard for me to comfortably enjoy enjoy geekier things with My Little Pony fans in games, in my experience frequently forcing My Little Pony references/jokes/character themes/accessories into all walks of life.
Your mileage may vary.
If I met you on the field of battle I would hold nothing against you, but believe me my army's Righteous Fury would be on overdrive.

Stereotypes exist for a reason.
Ever hear of a kilt? Its a skirt then men wear. The reason that they are oriented with feminitity if because we say they are. And whhy is it wrong for a man to wear a skirt? Huh? Because its for women. and they are acting like women. Men who act like women are lower because it is considered women are lower. Remember, the greatest insult to a man is to call him a girl.
And yeah, Anime is oriented towards grown men, Which makes the weird stuff in it all the more disturbing. About adults liking kid things

No really I was the same when I read the OP.
I say go for it if only for the potential comedic value.
As to the argument about pink having always been girly, pink used to be the typical colour to denote masculinity and blue for girls, as blue was seen as a calmer colour than the more aggressive pink. It's only in the past 100 years in which their roles have switched round.
Hell, yes. Do it! Anyone angered by this isn't worth listening to. In fact, you'll be doing yourself a favour by driving them away. Nerds who get wound up by little things like this tend to be pretty irritating people.
I just ctrl-f'd the discussion and didn't find any mention of Rough Riders. You should totally have as many as you can take, all painted up like characters from FiM, even if you only use them occasionally. IIRC, you can take 15 horses in one FOC, which gives you a lot of choice to work with.
Yay! What fun!

I do like the colors. It would make a nice uniform. Moons and stars are pretty standard military icons, so that fits as well. Now if your modeling your guardsmen to be mlps, not so much.
Bronies, the ones I see are fething annoying. So from my experience I dont like you guys.

They are you minis. Do whatever you want with them. As long as they are properly identifiable on the table as to the unit they are or type of unit they are you can paint them however you like.
Anyone who complains is just sad they didn't think of it first.

I go away for a day and this is where the thread goes? Sigh....
Well, I, for one, would never make an army like this, but I wouldn't refuse to play it, if it were done well. I think you could even do a Zoat army from Fantasy as a "counts as" army from IG or Tau army lists and could probably rock a good paint scheme out of it.
If you stuck with standard IG troops (or, really, any other humanoid army) I think you could make it subtle enough that, unless your fellow player was "in the know", or you came right out and said it's a Pony Army, they'd never get it. You could easily do a custom SM Chapter in dark purple armor with the Chapter Insignia being the moon crescent. I don't think anyone would really notice.
On a few other things I've spied in the last two pages....
Pink, as a girl's color, is definitely a societal construct. Time ago, the color for boys' clothes was pink, and for girls was blue, because pink was closer to red, which was the manly-man color. This changed less than a century ago.
Anime, as a genre, is neither "for kids" or "for adults". It's simply a storytelling method. I've seen anime that were definitely "for kids" and I've seen anime that were as dramatic and heavy as an episode of "NYPD Blue" (and in many cases moreso). Japanese Animation is simply a vehicle for telling a story, whether that story is a comedy, a fantasy, a sci-fi action thriller, supernatural horror or a police procedural drama. What gets exported from Japan to the rest of the world probably skews perceptions of it, however.
Alexzandvar wrote:And the army will not be made up of ponies, but it will have as I said before Void camo with the moon symbols and all that.

No Rough Riders? D:
Or Jump pack troops riding pegesi?
My Valkyries just MIGHT have Rainbow Dash thunderbolts on them.
Maybe.....
See now it's getting unreasonable. No offence man - the first post of mine I meant what I said that it is your army and you do what you please. And the concept of a galaxy-styled army is pretty cool. But the moment you start plastering Ponies over it I think many people would take it far less seriously and turn down games against you. There is such a thing as going Over The Top. If you want said army to leave a good impression, the Ponies have to stay behind.
Also I recall someone asking why ponies are considered feminine. Well, no, they aren't. Horses or ponies aren't something you can assign gender bias to (eg only girls ride horses). Ponies meanwhile (that's with a capital P all the time in any circumstance of reference) would be associated with MLP, which I would think was aimed more at a feminine demographic.
The guy actually did a pretty good job painting his jetbikes in a way to mimic Pony paint-schemes; that said, I don't like it. I think the brony thing is a bit ridiculous and kindof worsens the "social-outcast/neckbeard" stigma that comes with WH40k players. It is frankly kindof creepy, thinking of a bunch of adult men watching it. Regardless, I wouldn't refuse to play against it because I don't like it. That in it's own right confuses me; I'd figure most haters would want to play a MLP army, because they want to beat them so bad. I'd fistpump every time I downed a pony-themed unit. Come on; who wouldn't enjoy that?
Get roughriders though; maybe even DKOK riders. It's not pony enough without them.
Wait, I can't tell if there are some subtleties or inside jokes I'm missing concerning this thread but are you legitimately talking a out building a My Little Pony themed WH40k army?

Alexzandvar wrote:And the army will not be made up of ponies, but it will have as I said before Void camo with the moon symbols and all that.
Furthest I would get to having a pony actually in my army would be to have a Luna Lord General, but that would be it.
I said I just MIGHT put them on there as removable decals, really I'm still deciding. However after seeing those pink Necrons I think really anything is possible.

I don't know about OP, but that would be a bonus for me. People like that seriously creep me out. There's something very juvenile, very "Comic Book Guy" about people who react like that. Frankly, I'd be glad to have an army that helps me avoid them.

As in my previous response, I'd say the opposite. It's people who take this stuff so seriously that seem more like social outcasts to me. That's just plain childish, which is, of course, a hallmark of hardcore nerdery. I prefer people who are chilled out and have a sense of humour about this sort of thing. They seem far more socially acceptable to me.

I love customizing my Models, and I'm still trying to get some tiny speakers to put on my Baneblade to play Imperial music and such while I do battle, as I loved the Idea from the book "Imperial Glory" of putting vox-amplifiers on your tanks to play hymns and shout orders. I just feel like I'm stuck between doing what I want to do creatively and what I acceptable.
Also: those are some of the awesomest colour schemes I have ever seen.
They just work so incredibly well with the Eldar's retro sci-fi aesthetic that I almost feel compelled to actually go out and buy a bunch of Eldar jetbikes and do the exact same thing with them. Hell, maybe make a whole Saim-Hann* army all with crazy individual colour schemes... Those paintjobs just made me fall in love with Eldar all over again. <3
*EDIT: Whoops! Forgot I was looking at Dark Eldar reavers, not Eldar jetbikes! Honestly... Saim-Hann, indeed! Tut-tut. It's the bubble visors that threw me. Those are totally the sort of thing Craftworld Eldar would wear. Psychedelic jetbike detachment, psychedelic reaver gang: it's all good.

I definitely agree with this. If you can't have a good laugh when someone paints their army like that sample Necron army, or this army, and just get on with the game then you are what is wrong with the hobby. It is, after all, a game and while GW prefers you paint your minis the sky is the limit when it comes to *how* you paint them. They are your minis after all.
I still stick by my original assessment that if someone refuses to play against the "pony" army and complain a lot about it, it is most likely because they didn't think of it first and are feeling sad and dejected now because someone else did it.

Skriker
Very well said. People should not get so angry over a hobby, especially when it's accepted to do paint like the Necron pictures posted above.
Alrighty, I have decided to make this army and today I went and bought the paints.
I even confessed my intentions to the staff there after they were asking about my strange paint choices and asking them about any Lunar, moon decals. They were in total support of me, and said they would allow the army to be played there.
I would also like to thank everyone who supported my decision in this thread! I will post pictures and photos as the painting and build process goes along.

Thus Luna's Legion was born!
If they did ban you for the army they would loose you patronship. they would not care about the theme of the army unless its really offensive.
Be sure to post pics dude. and send them to me
Yes, there will be many wonderful pictures to come, I have even been working on attaching Vox casters to my Baneblade to play the New Lunar Republic theme!
I fear however I will need to do a lot of Experimenting to trying and make a decent Luna Lord General model. I have been getting my concept pictures and inspiration by taking pictures or just looking at the night sky outside my house.
I live on a farm so it's easy to see the stars on a clear night, it's beautiful really. I might even start painting outside when it starts to warm up a little bit!
