'Sup bronies?

Now, as many of you have noticed, lots of pony threads on OT before have failed thanks to a variety of reasons.

I'd like for this thread to not have the same fate. The topic of this thread is general MLP discussion. Anything about MLP is on topic. However, in order to ensure that this thread does not end up locked like the other ones, I'd like to make a few requests.

1) No pic spam. One pony reaction image or so is fine, but don't just spam dozens of pony pictures. THis thread is about discussing MLP, not throwing pictures at each other.

2) To those of you who either dislike the MLP:FiM show and its fandom, or are simply indifferent, please be respectful. If you find the pony fandom annoying, then no one is forcing you to visit a thread you KNOW will be filled with ponies. If you dislike the show, please at least be respectful to us. If you want to criticize, criticize. We bronies realize that not everyone will love MLP, and while we will encourage you to watch a show we love, we will respect our different opinions. However, do expect us to defend the show if we feel you're making an unfair criticism.

3) No trolling, please. We bronies will stay in our thread, and leave those of you who dislike the show alone. Please pay us the same courtesy. Bronies? If we are trolled, remember this: Bronies do it with love and tolerance.

So, as to the bronies who will be contributing to this thread, here's the starting question.

As much as my desire is to make fun of the show and those that watch it i feel compelled to admit it is strangely hypnotical... you watch 5 minutes out of curiosity and bam! you end up watching the entire damn season...

I don't find that to be the case.

My two elementary/pre-school age daughters crave the show and I find it to, well, be the type of show that is aimed at that demographic.

I may still be bitter that Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends ended.

Speaking completely seriously your infatuation with a childs toy gravely concerns me, i hope you dont plan on working with, having or stealing any children. Notice the lack of orkmoticons, i am deadly serious mate.

My favorite is rainbow dash, she's awesome, but, sadly, I know this thread will soon lock.

Fluttershy's my favourite as well. I admit, I'm partial to Pinky Pie, but she doesn't interest or endear me to her as much as a character. Could care less about Twilight, Rainbow Dash (was Rainbow a girl? I always assumed he/she was male for some reason), and the other one.
Second question; opinions on Nightmare moon? Was she justified in her actions at the beginning of series 1? I'm tempted to believe she was, though as is often the case she went about expressing her feelings in the wrong way.

I have to wonder what it is about this program that has caused it to be watched by so many (what I can only assume to be) grown-ass men.

I mean seriously guys, what's the deal??

I would understand it if there was even a hint of irony in the obsession with it.

I didn't get it until I realized this is basically the Sponge Bob of the moment. When Sponge Bob came out it was a kids show that young adults grasped on to for some reason, and this is no different really. I think the point of the love is that it defies all expectations, not of the show, but of who the viewer is.

Or it could be a bunch of people becoming adults and scared to death of maturity so they are grasping at immature things to hold on to their youth.

Their are others theories but they are less kind.

Can a grown man not enjoy a show because it's cute and sweet? And because it has actually developed and enjoyable characters? I enjoy it because I love the characters, that's it. Any show that can make me care about the characters in it, and care about what becomes of them is somethng that is worth watching. Dreadnote, see this for why--and so many others--enjoy this show.

Besides, what does this have to do with any future children I have?

I'm 19 years old. I consider myself relatively mature. Just because I can relax enough to enjoy something more childish and fanciful than what would be expected of me does not mean that I am 'scared' of maturity.

Maybe your Spongebob theory is accurate. maybe it's not. I don't agree with it, but you're welcome to your opinion.

I explained in the same response why I like the show. For me, namely, it's the characters. To me, they seem well developed characters and I honestly care about what happens to them. I've grown to love the characters--and in a slice of life show, that's what makes or breaks it.

Just because I'm starting a thread about a show I like doesn't mean 'I'm latched on with the zealousness of a convert', it just means I'm trying to find other fans of the show on online communities where I already frequent. It's no different than people starting threads asking who likes a particular band or book series. People just tend to think negatively of bronies.

Which would be true if this were come kind of inappropriate topic. It's not inapropriate, as you've said it's a show directed at 8 year olds. It's not like I'm doing anything legally questionable or offensive. It may be a niche show, but what's wrong with seeking out other members of the same niche if I so choose? I see nothing wrong with it, and I never remember any dakka policy that said fans of more niche game/show/books couldn't make threads expressing their fandom.

Of course, if this is a new policy, the mods can lock this thread. I doubt it though.

Fluttershy is my favorite pony, though honestly, I think the only one I don't like is Rarity.

Spike is my favorite character though.

I would think pattern recognition would kick in at some point and at the very least you would realize that perhaps the advice that this might not be the place to have the kind of discussion about the show is that you consistently have to defend it or end up talking about something other than the show. It is of so little interest to so many, or just flat out bizarre, that you will not find what you are looking for here. This isn't saying you are a terrible person, but you are atrying to find a muffler for a Pinto at a video game store and suprised and outraged that they don't carry mufflers. This isn't the only subject either.

The fact you consistently bring it up just to get the same threads makes me think one of two things are happening:

1. You know this is essentially a troll subject and you are baiting people, which in that case this isn't appropriate. Troll elsewhere.

2. Your level of cognitive dissonance due to your love of the show is as such that you don't realize that it comes across as creepy, or worse.

If you were really trying to find other fans of the show you wouldn't constantly ask on a board that doesn't understand your love of 4 year old girls toys, you would go to fan boards. I can understand posting once to ask, but this isn't the first time you have started a thread about this and you get the same response just about every time.

You simply haven't twigged that there aren't many people interested in the niche subject and keep making threads to try and gain attention to look for like minded people, I did the same thing with guildwars 2 until I just gave up and stuck to the forums for that subject while keeping part of my posting template informing people I am a fan of it so that any fans that see my posts will know I am a fan and may message me on it like slarg did.

The fact that we have had SOME posters showing their support of this subjecgt tells me that while it is NOT the most popular subject on dakka, there is a small group who do enjoy the show. I'm not looking to convert fans to the show, but I am looking for existing fans. Is this so wrong?

The other threads that have started up have been shut down due to pic spamming--as I mentioned in the OP. As such, I have started this thread trying to create a thread for any bronies on Dakka to use, without hijacking other threads. I'm not trolling. I'm trying to get the pony fans out of other threads so we don't screw up other threads.

I honestly don't understand why people view this as 'creepy'. It's an innocent love of a show--just like the fans of things like Robot Unicorn Attack, and other kids things. If you view it as creepy or worse then =shrugs=. I think it's telling that someone can immediately decide that someone who's a fan of something that's out of their age group is a creep.

I've only made two threads meant for pony discussion. One, was meant for discussion of the end of season 1, and petered out. This one was meant for a general discussion. There have been others who have posted threads--that got locked down due to pic spam--so I am restaring a thread about MLP: FIM for the purposes of discussion.

Maybe you're right, but I'm not looking for a place to go with people who are all ike me. I'm not looking for other bronies, I'm looking for bronies on dakka dakka. Once again, if this is something against dakka rules, let a mod post and close the thread telling me so.

There are enough fans here that it seems to be safe, yes we get a tide of people who don't like the show, but so what? I don't expect everyone to love the show, I just expect the others of a forum like dakka to be respectful of the differences in opinion, and not decide that we're all pedophiles or whatever the latest stereotype is.

I've seen the earlier threads created for this subject. Ahtman has several good points that you should honestly consider. In my opinion this behavior is quite similar to that of furries.
