Im talking for anything, not just wargaming and the like. Have you actually learned something useful? Something important? Something that made you look smarter in a normal conversation? Anything like that counts.
I know personally, from time to time, Ive actually had those "Huh, didnt know that" moments from discussions on here. And thanks to a few level headed smart DAKKAnauts, Ive actually won an argument with a "college smart guy"
What about you lot? What/how has DAKKA learned you?
But, I'll go with the general response of learning painting techniques and I guess tactics. I don't know really but it's nice none the less.
Of course there's also the fact that if you are the victim of something there is always a way in which someone can figure out how it is your fault.
@ all: In answering the question posed by OP, please remember that making offensive blanket statements about national, cultural, religious, political, etc, affiliations is rude and against our rules.
Probably the biggest thing I've learned is that the gaming community is waaaaay more diverse than I originally thought...to be more specific, it's not just filled with your stereotypical "highschool geeks".
I've learnt that a flawless profile, a perfect body, the right clothes, and a great car can get you far in America - almost to the top - but it can't get you everything...
I learned that a lot of people on "nerdy" forums can't really take a joke. Also King Cracker; you might want to check your spelling: it's "college" not "collage"!

So if you walk away from DAKKA right now, all you leanred is how to quote Waynes World? That feels a bit off topic.
Vlad - Thanks mate, dont want to look like I caught the stupid
I shouldnt be too shocked, but I still am a little bit. The last couple threads Ive made, maybe 3 or 4 people stuck to the topic. EVERYONE else did nothing just piss from the mouth and add +1 to the post counts.
HOLY FETH IS IT THAT HARD TO STAY ON FETHING TOPIC
I've learned to react more than, oh thats not good to certain bits of news around the world when disaster strikes. I now wonder, hope there where no Dakkanauts close.
For example when the tornados hit Texas last week, I was considering if any Dakka folks where in the area, and made sure to come on here later to see if all our Texas Dakkanauts where doing well.
Dakka has turned me into a big softie.
Oh it also introduced me to Infinity, would never have paused to look at it in a LFGS, if not for the enthusiasm here.

Incorrect usage of semicolon.
I have learned a great deal about a lot of subjects by reading this site, even sometimes in the OT section. I have made a lot of purchases, mostly regarding wargaming but also board games, roleplaying games, and video games, based on what other Dakkanauts have said -- and avoided some purchases, too. Dakka has been especially good of late for directing me to Kickstarter projects that I am interested in backing.
I have learned about Nazi Atlantis.
I have learned to Blame the Victim.
I recently learned that Chaos is Begin to Grow.
I have learned to fear and respect the CRASSUS ARMOURED ASSAULT TRANSPORT.
One actually useful thing that I've found out is that many people don't truly believe in the conspiracy theories that they rant about; I believe that in most cases they just bring up these ideas in order to troll others.
Never *EVER* suggest anything is wrong with guns, anti-abortion campaigns, or overly-wasteful vehicles if members of a certain nationality are around...
But of a less cynical strain, I suppose the same people have taught me to lay off religion a little and let people enjoy their right to freedom of conscience.

Wargamers like heavy metal.
How to do a number of painting techniques such as drybrushing and how to go about basing my miniatures better.
How to make a good army list that isn't spammy.
That the majority of the people in this hobby play more for fun and the fluff than for competitive reasons, despite what BOLS would teach you.
Just read the part that said non-wargaming related. So, not to argue with atheists about religion. That has certainly come in useful IRL.

Honestly, Dakka has taught me that I can take ANY thread and in a matter of posts have it horribly off topic, and that is a achievement in the OT section =o]
I have learnt that the wiener dog apocolypse is comming. They are making another judge dredd movie (atleast it doesn't have sly in it this time =o\) and that You Tube tags are the best thing since sliced bread.
Now if I could only get Manchu to change his siggy to " Now listen here do-gooder, I'm a man without a flaw! I trained for Fifteen year before they let me keep the law, I got a licence to club crazies and that's what you just saw! -I learned that you shouldn't pick your nose with a working chainsword.
-I also learned that nuns with guns make my pants feel funny. -Tau are not Communists (according to the weirdos).
-The internet hates Mat Ward (it also hates Cruddace and Kelly on separate occasions).
-The last thing I learned is that MODs use their power like a double-ended pleasure-stick. In the end, two people always get screwed.
-I also learned that peace and happiness are always possible; but I'd rather not ruin the fun I'm having with war and closedmindedness.
Dakka has taught me porn is cheese, the emporers children's ashes are the ultimate high, for every one person who likes something ten more don't and your carefully thought out arguaments can and will be ignored.
Most importantly dakka has taught never ever ever to read c.s gotos books.
me personally, I learned how to do OSL, I learned how to airbrush some models. the articles are great, and the forum for the most part, its entertaining. The articles and the gallery are where its at.
I learned mostly that people with talent, are willing to share, and usually do. THAT makes the whole hobby move forward. love that.
Dakka has learned me many things, amongst these are the following.
1. Certain nationalities do love their guns & dachs hounds
2. C.S Gotto & Mat Ward will never get flowers from Dakka Dakka
3. OT is a place of great amusment, and sprinkeld with fear.
4. I have made friends and enemies I think, at least Shadowbrand loves me

Ok I'm bigoted and intolerant.
I've learnt that my mate Matt is actually bigoted and intolerant. IRL he's nothing like he is on here - he actually wears a cardigan and quotes Antonio Gramsci in between bong-hits, whilst reading the Qu'ran. He tried to get me to join the Socialist Worker's Party last week. He's a close personal friend of Polly Toynbee.
I'm not sure what to say about my stint here. I've been to several forums, including 4chan, but I've never seen a place filled with so many people just waiting to get into an argument with you like here. Worse still, many have an "I MUST WIN" attitude, so instead of just letting things be and moving on or ignoring it all together, people opt to get mad and argue. People like what you don't like and vice versa, just get over it and stop wasting your time on such petty squabbles.
Also, bitter old man syndrome, bitter old man syndrome everywhere.
KingCracker wrote:HOLY FETH IS IT THAT HARD TO STAY ON FETHING TOPIC
In a word, yes
I've learnt several non-hobby-related things, mostly "hm, never knew that" kind of things, but I've also made quite a few friends on here and realised that, as aforementioned, the gaming world is far more diverse than you might think.

Never watch the news, news websites or things like that? Newspapers?
I've learned an enormous amount in my few years on the site. Here's a list in no special order as they occur to me.
1.) My first army I actually played, as with most people, was Space Marines (from the AOBR set). I learned how to play them from Age of Egos. 2.) However, the first army I loved (from the Dawn of War games) was Necrons, and in fact my very first mini was a Necron Immortal. I later learned how to create my own from Gavin Thorne.
3.) Once I started playing, I had uncountable questions - dozens, maybe a hundred! Patiently and politely answered in YMDC, most often by Nosferatu1001 and Gwar.
4.) Mostly via PM's, I've learned an incredible amount of stuff about African Cichlids from MeanGreenStompa.
5.) I've learned a lot about casting techniques from Aerethan, again mostly via PM.
6.) I learned how to make washes from Les Bursley.
7.) learned how to sculpt chains and wreaths from Insaniak.
8.) I've learned a lot about airbrushes from Mistress of Minis.
9.) I learned a lot about how to make my own decals from Legoburner, and how to apply them correctly from Winterdyne.
10.) I learned how to take pictures that suck a lot less than they used to from Yakface.
11.) I learned that people can disagree with me often politically but still be totally reasonable from AustonT.
12.) I learned from Lunahound why my dullcote frosted my minis. Later, I discovered how to recover from it from Major Tom.
13.) I learned to read the story before commenting on it, lest I make a fool of myself, from Kanluwen. I'm confident he'll know what this is in reference to without a link.
That's off the top of my head, I'm too tired to think of more right now.
1. Never fly into Alabama.
2. Wasps make suitable replacements for bees. In certainmost a few circumstances.
3. Coracles make ideal hard-to-control boats for the Welsh.
4. You can scare the bejeesus out of "country folk" by buying a few bunches of cheap flowers, leaving them near a tree on a popular country path with cards saying 'I hope they catch the THING that did this to you' and '4eva in are hartz' etc.. And, if you have time, lighting a candle, then putting it out and then taking a massive bite out of it before leaving it there.
5. Most people do not read stickies.
6. In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire.... oh.. hang on a minute. Sorry. My bad.
7. You can tell when the school holidays have started.
8. People can surprise in both good and negative ways.
9. There is hope for us all yet.
10. Wine makes it all better. Nearly.

ekki ekki...
Bolded word in the quote. I get the rest of my news from my friends, news radio, and the Colbert Report
I've learned 3 important things since joining Dakka
1. Never underestimate how upset people can be over the mechanical and scientific explanations of futuristic fictional weaponry
2. Some men are truly obsessed with their weiners @Frazzled 3. Compared to some of the michelangelo-style masterpieces in the gallery, I have all the painting ability of a 3 year old with ADHD who due to lack of equipment is attempting to paint his miniatures with watered-down play-doh and a potato masher
I have learned that roughly only about half of the general populous irritate the gak out of me, I had it up to about 90% easy before I started using a public forum.
mattyrm wrote: I have learned that roughly only about half of the general populous irritate the gak out of me, I had it up to about 90% easy before I started using a public forum.
That might have something to do with 90% of people in real life quickly realising you are not to be fethed with.
1. I learned that I was really ignorant of US gun control laws and a bit of a gakker about it.
2. I learned a lot about how politics works in different countries.
3. I learned how to keep a level head in internet debates (finally).
4. I learned how to wet blend, and a lot about airbrushes, scenery making, greenstuff sculpting and photography.
5. I learned that most of what gets posted in Tactics is rubbish.
mattyrm wrote: You think? I don't think I could play properly until I started reading those forums!
I reckon I would only come second last instead of dead last next tourney anyway.
When did you start reading them?
The quality has dropped over the last couple years, IMHO. It was pretty solid before, now a lot of it smacks of... um... let's just say it reminds me of other, less reputable forums. Which isn't to say that there isn't some good advice being given there, you just have to sort out a lot of crap to find the gold. Signal to noise, and all that.
Yea I used to live in the tactics forums, but sum bitch I just can stand it anymore. Id say 80%ish is just crap that people have read somewhere and copypasted it here. No actual skill or experience ever doing what they say they have done. Not to mention the rest of it is pretty much "Oh play this net list, not that netlist" No thanks.
When I have a tactics question, I tend to PM it to someone I know who plays that army. Depending on the answer I get, I try to encourage them to make a thread. Tactics threads are tricky because there's not much incentive to post them unless you are one of those rare few who actually goes out of your way to help others or one of the slightly less rare individuals who gets your jollies by asserting your superiority over others via a miniatures wargaming forum. In either case, your efforts are bound to be met by folks who disagree with you on a poor basis and waste your time with arguments that don't even address what you're saying.
Of course, that never stopped anyone from posting in the OT. I guess the real difference is that posting in Tactics requires more thought and effort.
1) That browsing the YMDC threads is exactly like watching an episode of Jeremy Kyle - just without the smug t**t
2) There will always be a better painter
3) Internet forums are a great way to pass the time when drunk and not quite ready for bed

I was coerced onto my school debate team because I was quite good at it, but I always hated the sophistry. I cannot stand being told to argue a point I don't agree with, or twist someone else's argument to "win". The point of a debate should be communication of ideas, not victory.
I was shambolic in my preparations and would often ad lib, but I still got on alright in a few of the debates.

Might sound cliche, but all sorts of social skills. When you have the pressure of a ban (or your own humiliation) over your head for being outrageous and saying stupid things, you learn pretty quick that that there's a reason you're being asked to take a break... I don't use that reasoning to act civilized anymore, but I definitely think dakkadakka has taught me a little restraint; something a lot of people my age are missing, and that I appreciate.
As far as I know, the people I'm communicating with are mostly adults who are successful and intelligent. Everyone is (for the most part) articulate, and puts detail and elaborations into their posts. I try to carry that over into my own writing, and I think I can organize my thoughts a little more competently than I did before dakkadakka.

We're actually all Orks. Just with good spelling and grammar (some of us, anyway).

I try to at least make my posts readable.........legible? Case in point.
I've learned that no matter what my belief is, it's wrong because someone says so.
Also, anyone who has opposing beliefs to me is clearly an idiot and the only way that this person could hold these beliefs is if they were mentally impaired.

You have learned to internet, This is a proud day my son. go forth and multiply (tears of joy)
They grow up so fast.* wipes tears from eye* Next thing you know he'll know the two words required to drag any thread into a spiralling fit of decay and severe butt-hurt. ( And no it does not involve tentacles.)

NOm
Had I to guess those words would be "Religion" and "Ponies"
Or are they two words together, like "My opinion" Or is it "Youmad?"
I'll eventually learn those two words if I have to torture it out of someone.

Thanks.
Darn! Because the only thing of use I've learned from Dakka is how terrifying and loathsome British "Cuisine" is. Ban away... (Grumble.. grumble.....)
That a thread can appear in 40k General Discussions, entitled "Do you play with yourself?", and the vast majority of posters will take it seriously, whereas any sort of thread can appear in OT and devolve into Sex References/Racism/Religious Intolerance/Intolerance of Religious Intolerance/Spam/Any or All of these, by the end of the first page.
I've only been a member for under a month. In that time I've learned that:
1 - I'm terrible at sculpting Green Stuff but there is help and much inspiration available (Space Corsairs for instance).
2 - Female Space Marines are not looked kindly upon but I'm still going to include them in my AoA force because it makes sense.
3 - You had better have firm beliefs if you intend on using Jokaero for anything (the populace hates the Space Monkey).
4 - That I am the biggest nerd I know IRL and so I'm moving to the internet to spend more time with people (or spambots?) who will never get tired of talking about 40k.
I learned that no matter how hard you try to make a thread with funny 40k picks, it will always be shut down before 30pgs. The interent needs more funny 40k pics. Someone should make some.

Don't you know there can't be anymore. it's all been done before.

Grandma Nazi always gets out, gotta check those cellar locks again.
@nomsheep - pleased to meet you also, pretty sure we'll all eventually be up(?)graded to spambot.
I've also learned that this place actually gives me more motivation to paint. And less to do my homework.
Wiat she out again, grab the rifle we're going hunting. *cocks barrel*
I'm just annoying (depending on your p.o.v), or cute, caring, sadistic etc etc etc (once again depending on your p.o.v) I'm actually a hello kitty bear.
I don't think that's this place. I reckon you're just lazy
It's true but this is adult school which I should be considering applying myself to. NO MATTER. It shall get done - so instead of that Dakka has taught me that it's fine to sit on the forum at 3am whilst figuring out a camo scheme on this Chimera hahaha. I feel sufficiently self-justified now **continues painting**
If you read this all the way through, you'll notice someone (usually me and my epic spamming skills, to be fair i'm suprised I don't get more warnings than I have) have made it off-topic at least once per page.
On-topic, I have learnt that dakkas mods are the most active I've seen (cept when half dissapear to be nerds at adepticon ).
I've learned that no matter how well you round off your list, no matter how hard I try to justify my choices, and no matter how hard I try to explain what I mean, people will still try and poke the tiniest little holes in your list and complain about your non-meta attitude.
"Oh, you're taking Tactical marines in a BA Army? Idiot."
"Now you aren't taking a free MM in your squad? LOL."
Cool just read your intro thingy! Pity about your missing Necro minis - happens too often unfortunately! And it's good that you're a gamer again from 1994 to... Now!
I learned that internet =/= reality when it comes to 40k games.
Finds what works best for your in a match and go for it. you will one day fine a list that you love.
I've learned that, as afor mentioned, there is ALWAYS someone smarter or more willing to argue then me, I've learned that people are softies on the inside, and that mods are nice, usually.
Agreed, sometimes you feel like you are taking it in the ass, where the lube makes it more gentle. And the extra pants is for the tiems when you are in such disbelief, OR laughed WAY to hard, that you gak yourself. Makes sense to me as well
