Huh. Kind of underwhelming, to be honest. I was expecting more tentacles for something called a Kraken, and two guns seems a bit low for a Colossal. The design seems to exchange detail with moar rivets
Not a bad model, by any means, I just don't like it.
It's like they took a bit of the helldiver, a bit of the leviathan/harrower and then stuck a big bulbous head on it and and added two Dr. Octopus arms to it.
And what's with all those exhaust pipes on the top? That doesn't make any sense.
I was so looking forward to the Kraken. What a let down. I guess that's $130+ of my hobby budget that just got freed up though.
For me a swing and a miss, it had so much potential it needs more tentacles and more of a Sea monster theme the legs need to be shorter and more of them and tilt the "body" back a couple of degrees to make it more longer and less tall.
It's pretty dull. I think they definitely dropped the ball on showing off the scale of the thing. A LOT more legs of various sizes could really have sold us on something that wasn't just a big crab-jack.
On the video: "If I was a Trencher in the Iron Kingdoms...I wouldn't be worried about this or any other terrifying death machine because nobody wants me in their army."
Although I don't collect Cryx, I really like the style of much of that line of figures. This kraken does not look nearly as good as the better cryx stuff. It is very bulbous, and I can not get past those two tiny little hind legs that look ready to comically snap at any moment. To be fair though, a lot of the warjacks have laughably small legs holding up a massive hulking body.
MeanGreenStompa wrote:Reminded me of the harvesting robots from Matrix.
I was thinking that and the tripods from War of the Worlds.
I really wanted to like the Kraken and for that like to get me interested in playing Warmachine again, but alas the model has failed to elicit any sort of desire on my part to own it.
It has to be the bulbous torso... it just doesn't work for me.
The concept behind it and the associated fluff sounds neat and appropriately Cryxy, but that isn't enough for me to drop the cash on a high-end model.

Magic?
In all seriousness, I suspect it just does what Goreshade the Bastard did when he
wanted to go on missions between various islands. It walks along the bottom.
As a sailor, I'm offended that they call this a Kraken. When my skipper shouts, "Kraken!", I expect to see a behemoth of a squid coming yo crack my ship open and swallow me whole.
Not some pansy ass metal thing with four legs and tiny tentacles.
I am not sure exactly what the original model is even supposed to look like or what it is even called without looking it up on the PP site. I thought Nigel's model was the stock model but it was rearranged just so in order to make it more aesthetically pleasing.
For all I know the stock model looks better.
But I do know what Nigel did to his model was a stroke of Robotech inspired genius.

I disliked this in the art, but I think the model looks cool. Could use another pair of tenticles yes. Hopefully those are metal to allow easier reposing and bitz ordering a second pair of them.

Amazing haha
I don't mind it. But its not the sort of thing I see and immediately say "ZOMFG I GOTSTA HAVE!"
Missed opportunity
I don't get the hate for this model. It seems super dynamic and has lots of interesting detail. The only thing i would add is a second cannon next to the other one solely for symmetry.

My guess is model + price tag takes something people are only okay with
into the realm of hatred.

I do think the name does not fit the model. Or perhaps the model doesn't fit the name. It doesn't scream "Kraken" to me. Doesn't even whisper it.
Well, the Leviathan isn't particularly large(or sea monstery), but I don't see people complaining about that. It's simply part of the naming convention Cryx does with their Amphibious Jacks.

I wonder what a suitable alternative would be?
Still, a monster of that size with those two tentacles alone could do what
the legendary krakens did, which is fight a whale and/or pull down a ship.
I'm a fan. I actually hated it at first, but after hearing "Runs on Meat", much more interesting.
The whole tick/flea look was off putting at first, but seeing as it is the oldest Generation 2 Collosal in the IK, I could see how it doesn't resemble modern jacks.
Aesthetically, more tentacles could be better. Gameplay = more attacks, less balance. I see the reasoning behind it.
What the pic doesnt reveal is the tight corset waist this thing has.
I think it is the reason why I find it lackluster. This large bulbous steam oven on top of spider legs wouldnt be so bad if it didnt look exactly like that.
By that I mean that it looks like two things slapped together and lacks cohesion between the two.
*cough* And this is why a consolidated PP thread would still be a good idea, if the MODs didn't have an irrational dislike of the idea *cough*
Can't say I'm a huge fan of the model, but then I'm generally not a big fan of the Cryx line (outside of the bonejacks, which are cool). Having said that, it does look pretty true to the artwork, which also only features two huge tentacles.

I think the assumption was that, as that artwork is of it attacking a ship, that further tentacles were submerged.
As opposed to the Kraken's spindly little legs furiously dogpaddling under the waterline trying to keep it afloat, which was apparently the case
malfred wrote:Sorry Dysartes, I never open mega-news threads. /shrug
As I said before, I don't think it's dogpaddling. I think it walks
alongside bottom.
but then there would only be a few feet of water for the boat to be sitting in, even a moored boat (as the one in the preview image was) need deeper water than that or they'll run aground.
Anyway, the model is compatible with the preview image, but the image & name certainly led people to the wrong conclusion about the beast
I like it, and I'll probably get one.
It feels more like a giant Helldiver to me than a giant crab-jack chassis, but thats fine by me.
I understand the too-few-tentacles complaints, but honestly I'm kind of glad that there's only two. There's already a octopus monster in the Hordes line. If it just looked like a metal octopus/squid, that would have felt more "phoned-in" and "already-done" to me.
The only thing I don't like is the giant necrotite furnace vent across the back. It gives plenty of opportunity for lighting effects, but I feel they could have broken up that space more with something else.

Obviously it's standing on top of another Kraken.
Alternatively, steam and magic, the solution to most issues in the Iron Kingdoms.
Also, "The Narwhale" does not sound evil. No-one is running in terror from "The Narwhale".

When its poking your eye out with its Sharp and pointy teeth you will.
not to mention it has a mean streak a mile wide.
so run run as fast as you can he will catch you for he is the Narwhale man
I absolutely love the new colossal models, especially the Khador one. I just can not stomach the idea of spending money on a model that makes comparable models from GW look inexpensive. Something I thought had a vanishingly small chance of ever happening.

What foot tall resin robot models does GW put out that are cheaper? That's right none.
Forgeworld makes some dreads that are considerably smaller in resin that cost about 80ish bucks, and make titans that are about twice as large for about twice the price. Kinda makes it seem like they are at exactly the same price point as the competition to me.

I dunno. Ork Stompa makes these things look small, and it's a bit more then half the price. Material doesn't matter, final look does. Contemptor dread is comparable in size, and way less then half the price, even including a pretty good selection of different arms. Same with the Decimator.

What are the dimensions of the Contemptor? Is it larger than a Dreadknight?
There is a superimposed size comparison pic over on Heresy Online that shows a Dreadknight and the Khador Colossal. The Colossal is a quarter to a third again as tall as the DK, and I'd say easily twice as massive. Remember the Colossals are on 120mm bases, not 50mm.
