Looking good so far, and welcome to the hobby.
One thing I'd suggest is trying a black wash on the metallic parts. This will help add some shading and depth, and tone down the brightness a bit.
Keep em coming!

Heya sharazad
A great start, I particularly like that shade of green you have going on, very accurate to the riders in the films!
Don't be phased by it being your first time painting, just go for it!
I have always liked the Gamling model for some reason, may be the heavy coat of mail he has going on and his stance so can't wait to see him done!
Have fun!

Good luck with the army.

paint him anyway just for the heck of it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Trondheim wrote:Damnit! Now I am ashamed of my Rohan.... Well this was an awesom start my dear, keep them comming

Thanks, yeah I decided to keep them as similar as possible, because in a real army soldiers tend
to not stand out to much from the rest as well, and this gives me the chance to make my heroes
look more different.
But yeah thanks for the feedback
And thanks everyone for the comments

No fething way those are your first models, they are fantastic for a newbie! (welcome to the hobby btw).
Gonna follow this thread (thanks for the linky deathstreak2000)
A little tip for the white on your horses (which is a little flat imho) I find it best to start up with a base of a light grey such as 50:50 skull white/astronomicon grey or the new ceramite white with a thin black wash over the top, over which I build up thin layers, but hey for a person new to the hobby your models are tip-top quality.
May the hobby gods continue to be with you!

hahaha thanks for the compliments.
About the horses, yeah I've done such things later on, but it failed a bit. I got the advice to just stop with
my horses now and focus on the rest of my models.

Post by: EleanorUmbra
Halloow everyone,
Thanks for looking at my blog.
Here are some updates.
I bought some finecast models on Salute! last weekend and they turned out to be fine.
Also in the picture some of my WIP soldiers.
Here are my finished soldiers, with a wash and all (one of the soldiers still needs eyes but they will follow soon ^^
So I'm working on my soldiers right now, painting them in a batch since I quite enjoy the quick results.
Hopefully soon there they will be finished and uploaded.
Hope you enjoyed the update!

Well damn, this was definitely worth the wait! As if these are your first mini's!
Quite frankly excellent, neat, great colours used and even going for the eyes!
You get a distinction If this is what's in store with the rest I can't wait! (slight contradiction with the first line there )

Also bought some of the new texture paints, might try that on the bases of my horses.

Those are some pretty good pics, you needn't be worried!
I really like how that spear rider is coming along, he looks ace so is the other rider, I just like that pose best.
How are you finding the texture paint so far?
55699
Post by: EleanorUmbra
I like the rider with the axe. I don't think I've made a proper picture of that one yet though.
Took the day off today so I'm already behind my station again ready to paint... though might hop downstairs for a bit of breakfast ^^
The texture paints, to be honest a bit boring so far, but then again ain't spiced them up yet.
The lady in the store showed me another pot of texture paint
for 6 pound but a large amount, I might look into that since I
feel myself being afraid of taking to much on my brush since the citadel pots are so small (which for texture paint a is imo a bit annoying and inconvenient).

Haha, it was quarter to 12 when you posted this! A good sleep in then Can't paint on an empty stomach!
Fair play, I'm just a little skeptical to be honest as I can't see them giving any real texture compared to good old sand'n'PVA. Your alternative sounds interesting though.

Yeah always have a good sleep in when I don't go to work ^^ I also went to bed a bit late, managed to kick in a film before falling asleep.
Yeah I am a bit sceptical as well, also for those reasons, but I am going to try and make it look pretty ^^ *sparkles and rainbows everywhere*

Yeah film was awesome it's called Role Models ( imo it's good )
I really like it always cracks me up. When I went to bed I started to feel a bit
gak, so decided I was awake enough to laugh and therefore watched a film ^^
Tonight I will probably replace painting and film for pub though
I have another game here that needs painting it's called Dungeon Explorers
That one would be suitable for a rainbow theme I suppose ^^
I got the box for Xmas but there are quite a lot of mini's so was still
trimming them when I decided I wanted to spend my time on LOTR
But I can feel an end in my painting process so might get the box out soon.
Yeah Mountain dew.... what can I say... just love it! ^^
Update: I pretty much finished the horses and riders on some minor details and tweaks.
Getting along with the foot soldiers.

It's a reet movie! It's absolutely hilarious! I am thinking of the right one when I say it has RP in and the little kid who likes the ladies right?
Aye, well you have slaved away all day, why not have a beverage! I fancy a beer myself, may have rummage downstairs.
Ah is that the one with the little anime peoples? I looked at that in my local boyes but I wouldn't ever have the time to do anything with it Would be interested to see that eventually on here.

If you can do it effectively (and I'm sure you can) then it will look awesome! The hard part i find is keeping it relevant to the colour palette I'm using, I always end up with the wrong kind of green or blue

I might give it a try with one and then post it to see if you like it or not.
It will hurt me though since I am super afraid to screw it up.
I did get a massive compliment in a gamesworkshop store of a person who does commission painting, she said I paint like an intermediate and not a beginner I was very happy.

Aye that's the best way, a test model. Don't be afraid to mess up though, I do all the time and most problems are very much reversable/fixable, just use thin layers
That's a very good compliment! Well done She's right though, you paint far better than a beginner!

Nice start and exelent brush control for a beginner. A bit flat yet, but extremes might correct this and, as my friend always tells, nothing keeps you from coming back to a model when you fell your skills matured
Lastly I wish you to try converting something as this a whole new world inside hobby and it changed my perception of tabletop gaming alot.
Cheers!

Thanks to Brother-Captain Scotti I got these bad boys, some imperial guards and more troops
Super happy with them. thank you thank you thank you
Thanks to Fingers I got these beautiful metal heroes! (And Heroin )
Legolas
Aragorn on foot
Gandalf
The beautiful Eowyn
Aragorn on horse
So extra thanks to you guys, it's tremendous of you! Thank you thank you thank you!!!
So here the update on the riders (well it's only one)
This is the finished horse look with finished base.
The rider had more extreme highlighting on his cloak and hair, soon added will be
Highlights on the arrow bag and maybe some extra stuff on the leather or metal bits,
but I'm still debating that.
I noticed it's hard to see the highlights, so I promise better pictures when all the riders are done.
Update about the soldiers, is that they only need highlighting too (and basing).
Hope you guys enjoyed!

Thank you, I will take the tips in regard. I am not going to do conversion on these models since it's my firs patch. I might do it
when I decide to expend or change army.
However I have a horse that needs a bit of fixing so I will post about that later on (it's legs need repairing).
So thanks everyone for the support, hope you enjoyed the update!

Ooooooo cool heroes too! Really want that Aragorn model myself someday but waiting for a warg attack box to come about
Looking forward to your take on Eowyn too!
That being your first mini done is fantastic, many including myself could only wish our first mini was that good, well done And with the foot troops not far behind this Blog has got me very excited!
If you mend that leg you deserve a medal too
The one criticism I have is the texture paint for the base, for me it hasn't quite worked but that's just me.
Keep it up!

Panic I think has the same opinion, though me and Fingers Are sort of pleased with the end result
of the base.
This was the look I was going for. I am going to hunt or create new texture paints for better results in the future, these
ones are to tame for my liking. Though I had a lot of trouble with the basing (massive failure rate there) so I spend a bit to much worrying
also therefore decided that this is good nuff for me
Thanks for the comment ^^ it does help.

WIP
Finished
Needs some more
Far from finished
Riders 90 % done (they still need different coloured hair and some need eyes)
Horses 100% done (could do more, but got to call it quits somewhere along the line)
Soldiers 40 % done (still need to do different coloured hair, and some of them need stripping and re-painting)
Shields 1 % done (only done one, still need to do the rest of them)
Bases 40 % done (most of them need the texture paint and the grass)
Heroes 0 % done (these fellas (and one girl) are going to be done last, so my skill is at it's highest point for the first time painting batch)
Other --- (this is everything I forgot and probably needs to be done ^^)

Whoop! Another lotr blog - good to see I'm not the only one. Ah your into Rohan, they have to be one of my favourite armies (after Gondor admittedly). Great work so far on the painting, they look brilliant. How long have you been playing/painting with lotr? You've got a fair mounted army going there. Painting all those horses must be a pain! - I know, as I've still got dozens to do and they never seem to get done. You may be interested in the Helm's Deep I built in fact since your a Rohan fan, I'll post the link at the bottom for you. Keep the work up, hope to see more from you!

finally got something done. Thanks for everyone posting a reply and following my blog!
So I started spraying for the first time (yes that is actually me, but this time with brown hair instead of blond)
I sprayed me heroes now, so if I get the courage I will start painting them. I'm going to do some research
about how the look in the movies and get some references and actually make an attempt to copy it as
far as me being a n00b allows me to do that.
I'm going to need you guys to help me with this, but I will ask the question soon
And so here is the true update. I practically finished my warriors (meaning I could do more but want to move on first at this point).
I have done the details and more washing, and the shields and more washing and then more highlights and more washing
and I did weathering (and more washing). I was pretty scared doing the weathering, I didn't take a clear picture from it but
will upload some soon.
And another picture of my horses because now they are assembled with shields
Pictures by: Panic
Shall I do weathering on the horse riders too?

So now for the update! I painted my first ever hero !...........*sound of drum*
Legolas
So I got a new books which Fingers gave me, to be specific:
Lord Of The Rings
Fellowship Of The Ring
The Best Of White Dwarf Magazine
I have one picture from what's in the book and the other one is what I used as colour reference.
I started with the skin. so base, layer and wash (later on I did more highlighting and fixing because I kept changing his eyes (Silly Sharazad)).
Next I was trying out some different styles for his jacket.
I tried different colours and different washes to try and get the best result.
This was a stage I was really looking forward to, his shirt and trousers.
The funny thing is that tutorials and the actual film images are quite different.
I went adventurous as I already made all the colours myself (which I didn't do with my army, but I guess this is what you do for a character)
I actually spend quite a lot of time trying to get what I want, in the end the trousers aren't what I wanted but I think they look good enough.
I didn't want to spend to much time and making it worse.
Some hair shots
So now we fast forward in time and here is the end result!
Panic took pictures because I take really rubbish ones so thanks for that!
There are pictures from different angles to show what is what.
And one other to finish it!
I'm not happy with the eyes, at one point they looked fairly decent but I was messing around to much and now they are to big.
I simply didn't want to risk more.
I've been messing around to much in general (that was something I shouldn't do with the next one, so I suppose it was a good lesson)
the paint is now to tick and it all looks a bit childish.
Comments are welcome!

Hi all,
Soon I'll upload the pictures of the second heroe that I painted yesterday!
Today I'll probably spend my time painting my finecasts.
Hopefully quick enough I will strip the paint of the models I got
from Brother- Captain scotti and blend them into my army,
I also , most likely, will be creating new hoves for the horse instead of buying new ones.
So still lots to do before completion, but hopefully not long until I can provide you guys with battle reports!

Off topic is alright, gotta have something to talk about innit?
Yeah I debated between them indeed, but I decided to go for Ultramarines XD
Still have deamons in my head because then I can play fantasy as well (everyone in Holland plays fantasy it's insane).
But yeah, Ultramarines it is ^^
I've heard the new starter set is coming out soon, that gives me some time to save up
Also probably going to start Bloodbowl.
And hopefully soon I'll be painting some more LOTR

Aye, spose it is like
That is a little different to your original plans, but that's cool, love the ultra's just can't stick collecting them, tried twice and failed.
However using my own Imperial Fists successor, the Scythes of Antares, I have been using Calgar a lot, and all I can say is GET HIM!!
That is something I thought of too, it's a good plan, 2 for 1 ^^
You might be better off getting the AoBR, there may be a lot of DA stuff to file off the new one? Kinda depends whether you want bikes or a dread though I guess
Yes more LOTR!!! (Not that I can talk )
How did the rest of the stripping go anyhow?
55699
Post by: EleanorUmbra
Well Panic stripped some other models with the same stripper and we decided that the models given where not to be saved...
But to make a bad thing a good one I've decided (original idea by Panic) that they're going to be statues.
I still want to make some background stuff Maybe I'll start drawing soon.
The metal ones are fine, so they're going to be glued and sprayed and painted and used for battle they are! Hail Rohirin!

I've started painting Aragorn, but it was not a happy painting day, I kept dropping my brushes and that kind of silly stuff.
I'm going to finish the BloodBowls first since I'm not going to be in the Netherlands much longer and they have to stay here.
( btw also got Eldar from him ^^).
I'm going to continue LOTR when I'm back in England again which is in about a month or so.

So, I'm back in England so there will be some painting sessions going on this week. I really feel like getting something done I want results and I want it now
There has been enough procrastination!
I'm not sure whether I am going to continue with my finecast or finish up Aragorn first. Seeing I put some effort into the conversion with the finecast (which most people don't seem to notice XD *sadface* )
Also have to do a session of counting up points, I've recently been given some mini's again so I'm a bit lost in what I actually own at the moment and how many points it's worth.
I have a hunch I'm already over my 500 points
But it's a good thing I suppose because it means I can start thinking about actually playing the game for once.
So there will be more pictures SOOOON.....!!!!

Here is a weird update for you
I was recently asked to display some artsy stuff in a gallery show that is currently ongoing
but the reason I was asked for this was because of this blog and my horses
Yes you can buy the paintings (Darth vader and space invaders) and yes you can buy the wizard and no you cannot buy Eowyn ^^
And please check out my mates blog if you haven't already done this: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/432369.page

Now that is some motivation thanks very much
So yeah hope to pick up some more painting over the next coming weeks ( I know I keep saying this)
I'm going to blame Blood Bowl and 40K for it ^^ they suddenly walked into my to do list and prioritized themselves

There won't be any new LOTR posts until I finish my Super Dungeon Explorer.
I'm working on them really hard (sort of) so hopefully next month is a LOTR month
Thanks again for the motivation.

Don't worry, I don't use that much green anyway, as I play grey knights. Automatically Appended Next Post: Once again great modlez

I have a couple of greens, especially with LOTR I tend to mix up a lot of color just to try it out and such. One day I'll have all the citadel greens muahhahaha

Hello everybody!
It's been a while and lots has happened in our LOTR world.
The Hobbit!! Does anyone feel like sharing their opinion?
The box set, aye pretty but expensive, no one on earth (or elsewhere) I'm going to get those any day soon.
I do love the Goblin King, he makes Jabba look like a Disney Princess
I did like the film, even though it's very different than the books. I like how the made the opening scene match up as a prequel with LOTR.
I have most of my mini's in one place now, so there is not many excuses for me to not paint. I'm going to put painting back on the schedule!!!
First going to sit around and decide which ones are going to get my attention first.
Hope you guys are looking forward to a new year full of LOTR!!!

Ill bite,
I enjoyed the film alot, really loved it for what it was
the boxed set while expensive has been one of the better purchaeses of my 2012, Nice models, No casting issues, the new rules work wonderfully & smooth, both me and my bro have played all of the scenario's out of the boxed set and are now onto points matched games. and still going strong.
If i had a camera i'd post a piccy of our fully painted boxed set & Board.
And yes, there is no esxcuse..... lol

The thing that depresses me most of the box set, must be that imo the models don't look really good. Nowadays a lot of models can look pretty much exactly like the human or whatever they represent.
Why did they -up Galadriel?! She is so pretty, how can that model look the way it looks? :O
Every time I see that model I can't help but feel a little bit angry.
Regarding to the film, I've seen it a couple of times, the first time I really had to get used to the different way of storytelling opposed to LOTR.
I don't really mind that the book and the film don't really match up. There is no use for a replica, I am pretty pleased with the film as it is, and I'm sure it will only get better.
How many games have you played so far? Get some pictures, I'm sure someone has a phone, no?

Ah my dear, i have what i call a "Dumb phone" it calls and texts thats it lol.
We've played about 8 games sofar, I've been using the Goblins from goblin town, and my brother had Thorins company, the scenario's played brillianty, even if these were points mached games the senario rules made them flow really well, and it was a reall challenge for my brother to compleate a few of them, when we moved onto a points match game, we played a 225 point game using the BRB & Goblin town models, Thorins company consisted of Glion, Oin, Ori, Fili, I faced off with Two warbands of goblins, lead by Grinnah & the Scribe, with a Third warband with the Goblin king and two Goblins for...ammo... hehe,
The outcome: Thorins company HURT! we did not play for VP, Objectives or create you own scenario, wich we should of in hindsight as LOTR prefers a Story based game over a meatgrinder and boy.. was it a meatgrinder, Poor deployment & dividing my forces played into the dwarfs hands and i was picked apart and routed very quickly. even when i was winning prioity, i did however hurl a few goblins, and Fili ended up with a rather large goblin shaped bruise on his head. Woop!

Just read thru your blog, thats some awesome work you've done lass. I agree with ya that the Hobbit was a bit disappointing for me since it deviated from the book but oh well the feel of it was still awesome ( it does feel like a visit New Zealand ad at some points As for the boxed set, I've had the plastics in my hands and didn't like the dwarfs so much but I'm sure I'll buy a finecast Thorin's company when it comes out - the goblin king and Radagast do look super funky though ! Keep up the good work !

Update time:
So I've painted my frodo like 3 weeks ago, so very much shame on me for not uploading. I also got a bunch of LOTR from a friend of mine who used ot play as a kid but decided I would give them a better home.
At some point of course I will upload pictures of them to.
Here is my Frodo:
My apologies for the quality but am in no possession of something that will give something cool. I need to find someone with a proper camera ^^
Thank you for reading my blog, don't forget to leave a comment
