That one unit, in any army, that is just your favorite. It's a pleasure to use, it's a pleasure to look at, and its fluff is awesome.
My personal favorite tends to vary, but at the moment, there is nothing more amusing than seeing an Ironclad Dreadnaught drop-pod down and tear through your opponents back line. I have also been known to enjoy Assault Terminators blitzing out of a Land Raider, as my name suggests, and turning a gunline into taco meat. That one's always a winner.

I have one random assault sergeant who's built up quite a bit of fluff on his own - mostly from surviving every single game, no matter what.
I call him Sergeant Bob.
As far as official fluff goes, I like Mephiston.

My Crimson Fists usually contain two Sternguard squads with powerfists, and one has Pedro attached. These would be my favorites, I think. They always end up at the center of the fight and they rarely disappoint.
Back when I played Space Wolves, it was most definitely my Wolf Guard Terminators. This was before they had a plastic kit, so they were all converted with parts from the Space Wolves sprue, Chaos Marauders, and Chaos Terminators for a brutal look. Their paintjobs haven't held up well, but I still love that unit.

My Nobs. They're at the very top of my most reliable units that I own across all armies. They destroy other deathstars, dish out tons of wounds, tons of attacks, tough as hell to kill, and have their own Wagon.

Seraphim. Easily my favorite looking model, paricularly the Superior with a power sword. Don't have an army to actually try playing with them.
Gameplay wise the Keeper of Secret is probably my favorite. It's my favorite looking Daemons model and it's a blast on the table. Dashes up to almost anything and rips it to shreds.

For me, believe it or not (given I don't play IF at all), its Lysander. Awesome fluff, excellent model and stats, just plain fun to use too.
I've got one painted up in 3rd Company colours, running around with 10 sternguard.. and I am really starting to appreciate his nastiness (and rerolling vengeance rounds).
I've also got a custom made master of the forge which I really enjoy... but that's not what we're talking about here.

The first time I used my seer council (back when they were a unit) it killed just about everything it touched. It eventually ran out of things to shoot. Eldrad in particular has never died yet (at least not outside of fluff).
My friend's grotesque (named Freddy, if I remember correctly) also managed to take on a life of his own; the guy wrote a heap of stories about his shenanigans with the archon (now lost).

My favorite unit in the imperial guard codex is the eviscerator priest. I really slowly stopped including them as they suffered worse than other things by my opponents adapting to my power blobs, but it makes me sad to make them go.
Gamewise, though they are worse than they were in the old codex, they're still pretty cool. Nothing like making 42 guardsmen reroll to hit, and I've definitely eviscerated vehicles before.
Fluffwise, they're the most awesome unit in the book. Crazy old man with an eight-foot-long-chainsaw-sword charging into battle. The scream of his whirring blade matched only by the screams of the priest's righteous hatred.
Plus, nothing is quite as awesome as punking a land raider with a single S3 guard model waving a chainsword. I've gotten more than one incredulous look as that blood talon dread or demon prince is knocked flat by a crazy old man.
It would be great if 6th ed changed something so that I could include them again, rather than being forced to spend those points on autocannon HWSs.

To be honest? Wraithguard!
A lot of people say they are too expensive, but I ran a unit of 10 of them slogging across the field, conceal and fortune on em. My opponent spent the entire game trying to kill them, and finally succeeded, but by then it was far too late
Also, it's satisfying to see the look on an opponents face when I tell them their statline and rules

So many things out my Daemons, Wolves, and Necrons armies to choose, but my favorite unit is everybody's favorite W2, 2+/3++, Fearless, FNP warrior of death, the Lone Wolf.
I have been on the receiving end of SO MANY SWEARS because of those guys.
Seriously, if you cannot fail a 2+/3++, they are just nasty and keep mulching through things. Once they finally get that one wound to stick, the kicker, Eternal Warrior, really takes the cake. I have had entire IG gunlines at 1750 empty into one guy, deal one wound, him proceeding to punch out a Russ, then a Chimera... and then dying in CC with guardsmen?!
My favorite was one walking across a table through a wall of Devilfish eating Railgun shots from Broadsides and the nasty shots from the Fire Warriors... punched through a 5 man Tau squad, punched through a devilfish... and then assaults Broadsides... to die. Without swinging. Was the biggest from both players!
At 2500, I tend to run three. I just don't care for scouts or wolf guard. Having my three lone wolves ( TDA, CF, SS; 85pts!) is all I need to have a fun time!

I think the fan stories of Kharn the betrayer is what really got me into 40k. I'll always think of him as Kharn the pretty cool guy.
Game wise I love Broadsides. Not much to do other than point and shoot. When you're crammed between a pair of the most powerful cannons attached to a set of flimsy legs while getting charged at by a bunch of racist armor plated codex-thumpers there isn't much else to do.

I have a veteran marine with a chainsword and bolt pistol. In the early days he was a regular marine captain, killing a carnifex and a remaining brood of genestealers in his first game. He then got demoted to tactical sergeant, before being promoted to Sword Brother for my BT. He's done a few cool things, like killing 3 GK termies as a sergeant, or surviving 4 krak missiles in the open as a Sword Brother. Most notably, he's never failed his leadership check though all the time I've had him.

One of my favorites, Steel Legion Heavy Weapons Team. Three Missile Launchers, very fragile unit and dies almost every game, but not without causing frustration to my opponents. They held a Termie Lord in combat for three turns, with the Lord needing help from two different squads of marines to take them out. They earned a permanent spot in my army for that.
My favorite, the Deceiver from the old Necron Codex. I loved the model, that stats, the abilities and the look of horror on my friends face as it tore through their squads as though they were nothing. The look of horror was even better when they learned it could run from assault on their turn and head to a more appropriate target that needed dealing with.

Stealth Suits. According to the fluff at once avoided and appreciated by Hunter Cadre commanders for their unpredictibility and unorthodox thinking, they continue to be a mainstay in my Tau army. The old models in a simple blue and black paint scheme look lovely, and there is a grim, visceral joy in picking up 18 dice and unloading them on infantry squads. Or the rear of transports.
If I keep them at just the right distance, the enemy has to make a difficult decision about whether to ignore them or engage them, and they have the abilities to make either decision the wrong one if supported.
In the heyday of the Fire Knife suit when people were still just warming up to the idea of Fish of Fury, mathhammer ruled the day and people ignored the Stealthsuit in favor of the FK for marine killing. Many an opponant was shocked to realize that a full unit of stealth suits kill as many marines as a Tarocha of Fireknives for cheaper, though at slightly higher risk and less versatility (though before Spacemarines had grenades standard, MANY tac squads were shocked to discover they were charging into terrain when hitting stealth suits and subsequently losing assaults to TAU...) . It helped fill out my anti-horde firepower (regular opponants) and was not long before horde players quickly decided that the suits had to go FIRST. Which only meant that (appropriate to the fluff) They became the bait to lure the enemy into the killing field...
TL;DR Stealth suits. Awesome fluff, awesome abilities, gorgeous models, and underestimated and poorly understood power piece in my army.

I love me some sternguard. the only thing that would be even better would be sternguard terminators, but alas, I would have to buy the badab war books and the astral claw master of the forge to give tactical terminators hellfire rounds. (IIRC)
My favorite Independent character would be vulkan, for his rules and for his weapons and stats.

Wolf Scouts. 110 points of suicidal tank busting goodness. I have five of them, each with Melta Bombs, 1 with a Meltagun. I then give them a Wolf Guard with CombiMelta and Power Fist for extra killy goodness.
My friend who plays a Footdar gunline is scared to death of those things. He deploys his Guardians in a line along the board edge to prevent them from coming on from his board edge and wiping out his War Walkers and Wraithlords.
As for models, Dreadnoughts are super cool but sadly I don't have the room in my list to run them. At armour 12 they'd also get popped way too easily with all of the anti-tank weaponry in 5E.

I love the fluff behind the biggest bad guy in 40K.
I've been wanting to build a Black Legion army based around Big Evil since 2nd Ed.
I might do it for 6th Ed.
I know this is slightly off topic, but I recently played an apoc game with my titan where the other team had abaddon in a land raider.
I was able to demolish his land raider, kill almost all the dudes in his squad but after wasting a lava cannon and a turbo laser shot on him he was actually still standing. He is the only character I've faced that has managed to survive an assault by titan.

He killed in six turns: T2 - Dreadknight. Guy rolled a 5 for his attacks. T3 - 5 Paladins. Guy rolled a 6. T4 - 3 Paladins and Draigo. Guy rolled a 6 and hit and wounded with all of them. I failed every save. This was a ten strong unit. T5 - After his accompanying Terminators got killed by the remains of the 10 strong Paladin unit, Abaddon killed another 4 and then got knocked down to one wound. T6 - Killed the last remaining members of the squad. That was practically 1750 points he killed in one game. I'm never charging Paladins into Big Evil again.

To be fair, he rolled very well on his daemon weapon rolls, and likely pretty well on his saves. If you were playing me you'd be seeing more like:
T2 - rolls a 1 on his daemon weapon, fails his save, dread knight puts a wound on him
T3 - rolls a 1 on his daemon weapon, fails his save, dread knight kills him.
Then again, I am the master of 1s, to the point where I don't even bring terminators anymore because I will fail 1 out of every 2 armour saves with them.

My landraider crusader has a good reputation because it has slaugthered swarms of nids the first time I used it. After each battle I give it a new feature along with other victories models.

All time favorite have to be Grey Knight terminator squad from Companion times. Five lvl 4 terminator librarians with Nemesis force-weapons. That was some 1200 point unit. It was awesome to see it in action.
