I was hanging out with some friends the other day, and we began to talk about the worst injuries we've had in the hobby. We are all still noobs and probably don't have as many battle scars as you old Veterans. But I won the contest because when I was cutting out the bits for a dread I left my hobby knife precariously near the edge of my desk and it fell. It had landed vertically right in my thigh. needless to saw my initial reaction as like this and then this and the god news was I didn't die, the Emperor protects.

Mine rolled off my desk and ker-thunked! into the top of my foot, to the ferrule (so about an inch). It was an x-acto #1 handle and #11 (pointy) blade. A bit of blood, missed anything vital, band-aid and it healed fine in about a week. Scar isn't even visible anymore.

Too many to count, over a quarter century.
Most WTF one was getting a snapped off craft knife blade in that spot in the middle of your back that you just can't reach, after pressing way too hard cutting some plastic.
Still not sure how i got it there, and it was really embarrassing having to get my girlfried at the time to pull it out, given that she already thought i was a klutz (and i was)...

This is why you do not headdesk where you are supergluing! Silly pony! My worst was quite recent. I was building my newly purchased Carmine Dragon (great model) and got careless with the craft knife, cutting towards my thumb. I'm sure you can see where this is all going. The blade (which I had just put in as the old one was blunt) slipped out of the resin and sliced into my thumb from the tip to about halfway to the second joint, pretty much to the bone. Grabbed some tissues and applied pressure then downstairs to get a proper bandage then off to casualty I went to get it taped shut Fun times.

I got up once from my hobby desk in a big hurry and immediately tripped on something. I'd forgotten the needle file resting in my lap and as I got up it hit the floor right as I was stepping forward. I happened to step on the point with my bare foot. I found the broken file, but didn't think it was in me and I was running late for work. The pain continued throughout the day and I realized that is was possible it might be still in my foot. Sure enough, when I got home I placed a powerful magnet against the ball of my foot - it stuck!
After vainly trying to remove the piece I went to the emergency room. The doctor worked up quite a sweat removing the 1/2" tip of file from my foot. I still feel some numbness in my middle toe.

Cats. CATS!!!! My cats like to frequently chase each other around the house. One time one cat jumped up onto my hobby table, while I was using an Xacto knife to shave down a Finecast mini. The cat bumped my hand AS I was cutting, and I wound up cutting into my thumb about 1/2" from the tip. That day sucked I tell ya, but not near as much as my cat stepping on the power strip while in the middle of a defrag. Now I have anti-cat™ measures.

When I first started hobbying many years ago I was working on trying to cut a space marine arm in half.
Well I was not so smart and had my fingers on the opposite side of the arm. The knife shot out the side and right across my index finger.
Needless to say waking up mom at midnight when your supposed to be asleep is not a goo idea so tape and paper towels were my solution.

My worst was I was gluing a buddy's Drop-pod together and had Zap-a-gap drip on my fingers while holding the joint together. I sprayed some Kick starter(super glue accelerant) on the Drop-pod and the overspray hit the glue on my fingers.
That was the most pain I had been in for a while.

My wife was trying to help me build an anvil of doom, cutting out bits of polystyrene. She is rather less risk-averse than I am, and had had some wine, so had no tray on her lap.
Knife slipped. Stuck in right thigh. Bled a lot - I can still recall the wound falling open.
Decided against A&E. Used a plaster at her insistence. She now has a cool (?) scar.
My worst injury is fingertip damage from overzealous use of superglue.

This didn't happen to me... But I heard a story about a guy who... Well, he... He accidentally superglued a guardsman torso... To his nether regions.
I can understand if you won't believe it, since it's a rather odd story. But... He took a picture of it. I'm not sure I'm allowed to link to it, so I'll refrain from it for now. You could find it if you search though, the story with picture is located in /tg/s archive.
Either way, just thought I'd mention the story here, since I find it rather amusing.

Cutting out a genestealer and when i got through the plastic the blade kept going and lopped off 1/2 my fingernail and about 1/8 an inch underneath that. But the worst has yet to come. My grandma's friend Judy wrapped it up in gauss, and later that night when my mom went to re-do my bandage, it didn't come off, we soaked it in water to little avail, so she had to rip it off my bloody stub and it started bleeding all over again, painful stuff.

"I cut myself with a 1 inch hobby blade" is a sentence that is unworthy of a man’s utterance. Should it be true however, I suggest downing oneself in a birdbath as a means of cleansing the dishonor done to one’s ancestors.

I'd expect nothing less from a man with such an obviously hairy chest and wide work bearing shoulders, honor demands that the steel be wetted in blood whenever drawn. Very commendable of you to use your own blood and not that of some stray child.

A buddy of mine cut himself with a wire cutter when he was building some terrain a few years ago. Had a fairly sizeable cut on the inside of his hand between the thumb and index finger. He'd broken his leg earlier that week, so it wasn't a good month for him. So far I've not had anything remarkable. A few cases of land raider hand, but that's it.

It was a sliding utility knife. I was using the end to try to pry off a piece from the rhino (pictured), the piece popped off, but I lost control of the blade. It wasn't actually that large a knife, but the jerking motion caused it to cut further than one would expect.
It was a pretty textbook case of "what not to do with a knife".

I usually get one or two nicks on my fingers every time I assemble something. Long ago in my youth I got a bit overzealous in my study of muay thai and started doing the whole body hardening thing, parts of my hands/fingers still don't really have any pain receptors left.
Worst I ever hurt myself hobbying though was actually forum related... I was sitting indian style on my bed with my laptop surfing 40k forums looking for advice on my new Tau army ( I think it was Advance Tau Tactica.. not sure been a few years) when I got an IM from my wife saying she was heading home from work. I realized I hadn't done any of the house work I had promised her that morning and had maybe ten minutes to knock something out so as to not look like a total slacker, so i lept out of bed on to my right leg....
Only to realize my right leg was totally dead asleep, sending me falling sideways, and badly spraining my ankle with a loud popping noise.
The funny part is is that something possessed me pull myself partially up on the bed to my laptop and IM my wife "OW! OW! OW!" (why I'm not sure really). Causing her to call my cell phone in a panic, which naturally was clear across the entire damn apartment.....I'm sure the combination of gimping and crawling required for me to answer that damn phone would've been hilarious if caught on camera

Just about any significant chemical reaction you could cause in your house will generate a lot of heat. You'd do well to keep still-curing resin off of yourself too.

That reminds me of one time when a couple of non-wargaming friends were looking at my collection. One of them dropped a model which broke (suppressed rage surprisingly well) When I went to super glue the arm back on his wife said "Careful with that stuff. The last time I used it the cap was stuck and when I bent it away from me (Seriously?!?!) it popped off and flung super glue near my eye"
I tried my best to not openly mock her and feign extra care so I didn't fling super glue at my face. Darwinism in action I suppose.

The worst thing that happened to me was when I was using krazy glue, the runny formula. I thought that the tube was nearly empty so I squeezed the tube VERY hard to try and get some out. Turns out a bunch had leaked onto the tube seconds prior, and the force of me squeezing for 30 seconds or so ensured that my thumb was VERY well stuck to the tube. At first I panicked, I was really concerned about how I'd get it off my thumb without tearing the skin like crazy. Then I calmed down and I submerged it in super hot water for a good while and then peeled it off. It hurt quite a lot, but it didn't break my skin. Yay!

I was trimming flash off some resin bits for my GK conversion one night after the wife went to bed (I worked nights @ the time). It was rather late & I was getting sleepy. I was in my boxers & things were.. how should I put it.. 'hanging loose'. I use a Testors X-acto knife, the handle is all metal & it has a bit of weight to it. Brand new blade too.
I finished the last piece & the blade was angled down & the knife slipped out of my hand - again, point down, sharp side away from me - and buried itself into my scrotum between the boys.. I screamed & jerked causing the handle to fall forward, creating an incision about a 1/2" deep & 1" long as it fell forward.
Worst part was the local anesthetic they had to administer to the area for the 4 stitches. Dr. said I was lucky I didn't sever any of the working parts & give myself a home vasectomy.
I don't model w/o pants anymore.

Ah yes, ye olde battle-wounds thread!
A few years ago on a late Friday night after the lady-wife was abed, the sleep did not takest me and I chose to apply the holy Xacto to some plactic. A few hours, and a few shots, later: Lo, the blade caught in the plastic I was shaving, I struggled mightily, and not realizing me own strength, I pushed the blade with too much force. Hence, didst it slide lthrough the plastic like a hot knife through butter. Unfortunately, my left index finger was in the path. I looked up and saw a chunk of finger fly.
Lol, anyway, I chunked off the end of my finger! Angry red blood spurted, I rushed to the bathroom to place said wound under running water to see how bad it was. When I heard my wife ask "Why is there blood everywhere? ... What piece of you is laying on the blanket?". Well, we got to the ER and eventually made it to surgery to have the end sewn back on. That's my worst!
Moral: NEVER drink and use a brand new xacto blade!!!!

I'm fairly cognizant of what I'm using and how when it comes to sharp knives and superglue. I always cut slowly and carefully, away from myself as much as possible. I know that a knife can't cut human skin if it's pushed against it (try it sometime, but I shouldn't have to tell you to be careful). I've gotten superglue on my fingers but I've never stuck my hands to anything.

PROTIP of the Day. Tape your thumb up and index finger with first aid tape on the hand you are holding your model in. I also use a deerskin glove as well at times when I don't tape up. It will help keep those gashes to a minimum.

Many small cuts in my finger.
But the most remarkable was when pinning a metal figure with a drill, i was putting to much weight on it and the drillbit snapped off.
Was annoyed as i had no spare , so was trying to look for the broken off part, to maybe use that, i couldn't find it, until i looked at my left hand's thumb, there it was sticking through the thumb and peeking out of the nail, then it started hurting off course.

I cut pretty deep. Bleeding wouldn't stop after like 40 minutes and half a roll of paper towel, and none of my roommates were home for a lift to the hospital for stitches. So I hop on the bus, finger wrapped in paper towel and held up somewhat to prevent too much bleeding, and went to the hospital. A half hour bus ride later, I pull in and wait an hour for the triage nurse. There were some worse cases than me coming in, so I let a couple people with kids go before me.
ANYWAY. Nurse checks finger, says "Doesn't look too deep, but I can still sterilize it for you and bandage it properly if you want."
"Sure, I'm already here."
Nurse pulls a wastebasket over, has me hold my hand over it, begins pouring antiseptic solution. Now I should mention that at this point it had stopped bleeding. When she poured the antiseptic however, it opened up somewhat and began gushing.
"Oh, my. Oops." She says.
She applies gauze again and applies pressure before checking a moment later. When she pulls away, it is bleeding steadily. She applies gauze and pressure again, waits longer, pulls it off, same deal.
At this point, the nurse looks at me and says in a very cheery voice "Well gak. That might be deeper than I thought. Let's get you some stitches."
40 minutes later I have 6 stitches in the tip/side of my left index finger. Didn't hit anything vital, it just felt tight whenever I tried to bend it prior to healing fully.

I sat there in pain, stopped the blood flow and put super glue on it. Pretty dumb, as I still have the scar, but thems the breaks.
PROTIP of the Day. Tape your thumb up and index finger with first aid tape on the hand you are holding your model in. I also use a deerskin glove as well at times when I don't tape up. It will help keep those gashes to a minimum.
Very good idea! Wouldn't have thought of that, but that tape is certainly enough to deflect a slipped knife. Thank you for saving me from further mishaps.

It didn't end up being a 'scar' per se, but it was frightening at the time:
I was putting together some tight-fitting plastic pieces - Blood Angels if I remember correctly - and the pieces snapped together so tightly that the Zap-A-Gap I use splattered right into my eye. I immediately dropped the model and headed into the bathroom. I flushed my eye out vigorously and, about 30 minutes later, I opened my bloodshot eye and looked side-to-side. No real damage, but I could feel the raised bump on my eyeball from the dried superglue. Every time I moved my eye it was like a grain of sand rubbing along the bottom of my eyelid.
Luckily, your body is an amazing machine. The eye, when presented with a foreign object will isolate the proteins around it and expel the object. So, when I went to sleep that night, I was thinking of how I was going to live with this for the rest of my life, but in the morning I woke up and the piece had completely sloughed off. No scar, no mark, no real damage. However - I learned my lesson. Don't hold the model so close to your face and probably don't use quite as much Zap-A-Gap.

Years ago I put a number 11 exacto blade the long way totally into my thumb. It was so deep that it made a sucking sound when I pulled it out. It didn't even bleed right away, then it never stopped. I still have a scar on the pad of my thumb, after many years of use. Aaahhh good times.

Good lesson here kids. Get goggles or even a face sheild. I have a sheild for chainsawing wood and I also use it to dremal models. Protect the mug!!

Other than being stabbed everytime I go near a chaos mini. I got hit in the eye by dice flying across the room durring a game. Once during a game at a games store in a city I was visiting. A guy I was destroying in 40k pulled a knife and place it on the table as a subtle hint (I might have been gak talking a little). I being a rather large and rather tattooed guy told him what he could do with that knife if he didnt put it away but I will not lie I about gak myself when he did it.

The funniest injury i've had was trying to brace myself on my unit of plastic lizardmen with spears i had just done by trying to get up off the floor where i was building them. I had a bunch of tiny little punctures from the spears. I was really impressed with the strength of the plastic and how sharp they were.
I've had all kinds of great injuries from the 3d printer i eventually built including covering both my hands in liquid abs plastic and having it solidify before i could do anything about it.

If you ever have a few beers at dinner time. And you fancy doing some work on your metal minatures.DO NOT!!!
After going down the pub,I was cleaning up my Ork Blood Bowl team, with a SCALPEL I got from my mate who said '...the sharper the blade the less likely you are to cut yourself..'
Suddenly my orks were being painted with a nice blood red colour, yet all my paint pots had their lids on....
A 1 inch scar on my thumb.(Only 2 hours in A&E and 4 stiches.)

Left load of spare blade heads on my carpet. I then stepped on them, realised what they were and quickly jumped off them.
Fortunately, the blades only rolled 5 ones and a two for their attack, and I easily came through unscathed with my high defense value of 5!
EDIT: Immediately after writing this I go out to spray some models. I get my spray can out, check the wind direction and start to spray. Huge gust of wind suddenly occurs and my face is a coal black all over. All in my eyes too. I am very embarrassed...

I haven't had any in a long time, but when I was a kid I cut my finger. It was a Sherman tank I was building, and I was cleaning it off with a razor blade. It's quite obvious what happened after that. Also it's quite embarrassing to tell your parents after your bed time and have to wait in the ER for almost 6 hours. And then have to go to school the next day.
It still baffles me how stepping on a lego hurts more than cutting your index finger with a razor blade.

Cut the top of my thumb off.
Super Glue in the eye.
Chewed on a hormagaunt during a party for a while... gums destroyed.
Melted foam board with a heatgun in my basement... no ventilation... the burning was horrible.
Electrocuted while examining Space Wolves in my basement... I was still in a towel and unplued me radio... oops.
Stabs, cuts, slashes all filled with superglue.
Spent most of highschool chewing the glue off my finger tips (thanks 3rd ed Hive Tyrant!).

A Town Called Malus wrote: PrehistoricUFO wrote:The worst thing that happened to me was when I was using krazy glue, the runny formula. Yay! Nail Varnish Remover is really good for dissolving superglue on your skin. Worth a try next time It's funny but in 36 year of life I never knew this nor had it occurred to me. The time it would have saved me filing/sanding dried superglue off of my hands! Cheers!

Myself I have nothing hobby-related to report (at least not this hobby, what I have done to my hands over the years while working with wood is another story).
But I was witness when the Khorne demanded what was his with a game of blood bowl...
So we had this Blood Bowl league, once, when the world was a happier place and 40k second edition still to come (or so I think). It was a lively and crowded league, with first and second league both with 4 divisions, sometimes even a fifth. Endgames were a spectacular event, with lots of visitors, emotions high and windows shaking from the roars of the crowd.
Now this particular endgame was a tight thing until the very end. Time is running out, and the outcome of the current offence will decide the new winner of the series. And success! The crowd is cheering the winner, juicy curses are uttered, fists poke holes in the air and generally big gestures are made, while the winner heads off leading the crowd to the bar of the youth club the whole event is taking place. He gives a mighty roar and jumps into the air - only to be stopped by the metal door frame he is just passing... what is a little pain on the head for a Blood Bowl trainer? Nothing, I say! 'Eadbanging while wearing spiky helmets is standard tactics!
So he marches on and orders a coke. The bartender is looking at him totally shocked. Wasn't he a ginger? Now he's a redhead... "Oh my... what happened to you? Let me order an ambulance..." Why?" the lucky winner asks, then following her looks, touching his forehead, looking at his bloodstained hand. "Oh..." Got stitches and a nice shave, and wore his battle scar proudly.

A few years ago, I was using an exactly blade to mod a Tyranid warrior into a prime. I wasn't paying attention to my fingers, and on a thick piece of plastic the blade skipped through and sliced the tip of my finger nearly off, with just the fingernail keeping it on(and nearly cleaving through it as well!).
They didn't use nearly enough anesthetic to keep me from feeling them pulling stitches through my pointer finger.

Using a hobby knife to remove some previously owned models from the base. Tried to get the knife under the foot enough to pry the rest off. Hoping it would just pop off. Well before I applied the pressure to get it to pop off, I paused and mentally told myself..."I'm going to get cut..". Sure enough, POP!.. There goes the model and base. I stick the blade about 1/4 inch into my hand. Angry, I throw the knife at the floor and run to the sink to get some cold water on it. I then notice that I also, some how, managed to gash my thumb as well. Good news is there was no stitches involved for either. When the ol lady asked if I needed stitches... face when white and almost hit the floor. Now I just have a quarter inch scar and more respect for a blade.
Moral of the story: If you think you will get a wound... your going to get it.

I'm actually missing about a 1/4 inch chunk of thumb meat on my left thumb. Hobby knife misuse. While watching Ricky Bobby. Delicious.

A buddy of mine had his Oop night goblin army fully painted and displayed. All 8,000 points of spears raised. He fell backwards on it. Smashed his entire army beyond repair, and had about 50 night goblins stabbinghim in the back. Each was in with the full spear tip. Funny as all gak. But so sad to see a beautifull army decimated.

Enzyme washinp powders work well. Biotex is my favorite.
As for me? Well about a month or 2 ago i am working on a 1:144 scale karl-gerat 41 54cm superheavy morser and i notice that there is a part that needs some significant trimming. So i pick it up along with one of my small industrial razors. the blade slips and enters my left index finger. Much, much pain and blood literally spurts everywhere. I sit there, stare at it, say to myself "oh gak" and then go to the bathroom, wash the blood off and rap it in loo roll to stem the bleading. My mum comes into the kitchen, sees the blood and freaks out. As it is she dresses it and tells me not to take the bandage off for a day. Thankfully, due to my regenerative capabilities, it heals in days. But i have a (rapidly fading) scar, now only 1/8th of an inch, on my left trigger finger. Oh and some blood stains in my room i keep meaning to clean up.....

5 years ago I was cutting out the pieces of a Drop Pod out of the sprue with utility knife (I was pretty new to the hobby, especially the modelling part) And as smart as I was I was cutting towards my body, when one part proved to be a little more stubborn than the others so I applied a little more pressure..... and BAMM. End of story, 9 stitches where necessary to fixate my skin back on my left thumb.
