If I can't even pick my own class, I'm not playing. I wouldn't want to create a character concept I want to roleplay, and then be stuck in a class that makes absolutely no sense for the character. And I certainly don't want to roll up a character concept I don't want to play.
Besides, unless the GM is rolling for me (and I don't think Alpharius is intending to do so), he won't be able to know what roll I made anyway. It's not like I'm generating stats.
For purposes of this game (and to be honest, any game of WFRP that I'd ever GM), you can absolutely pick the race and starting class for your character.

We're here to have fun people - fun!
How is dice rolling going to be handled?
Melissia wrote:An honor system I imagine.
The purpose of the roleplay, I believe, is more on creating an interesting narrative and less "I ATTACK! [rolls a 21]"
Pretty much what Melissia said!
If there's really a big hue and cry for something else, we could use Invisible Castle.
Either way (Honor System or Online System) will work fine by me.
Cool beans. I was just curious. Thanks for the clarification. I'll see about getting a character made up soon... the randomness was getting a bit daunting but if we're allowed to pick our class that's cool.
Your all soft I tells ya! SOFT! If the game goes well we should do another where we do strict rules and roll for everything! Instead of building a character to suit our inner desires, you have to work with what you have. It isn't fun to do all the time, but it is a good exercise every once in awhile, and usually some pretty epic stories come from those kinds of situations.
I can't help but feel like you are missing out. Perhaps it is just that I've been lucky and had groups that like to do daring things and are proficient at improve. Think of it as an actor being given a role instead writing their own part, which is, surprisingly, what happens the majority of the time. A raucous group with pregen or random characters will always beat a feckless one that pours over every element of their character creation. In the end, it isn't the character creation that makes a game go well, but the players.
Also, playing is a choice, if we were to so a little fun game like that (odds aren't it won't happen anyway), you can always choose not to participate.
Melissia wrote:And I would, because it wouldn't be fun.
At least be more specific and more honest and say it wouldn't be fun for you, not that it is not fun in general. Other people aren't so myopic, and indeed do have fun with it. I don't care if you don't like to try a game like that every once in a while, that is fine, different strokes and all that. The problem I have is that you present your feeling as some universal truth, which it is certainly not.
Melissia wrote:I don't roleplay just so I can roll dice for a character I don't care about and am not invested in.
You must find all books, plays, TV, and cinema boring, considering you didn't create any of those characters and you aren't playing them either. The whole point of such an exercise is the challenge of bringing the character to life, much like an actor brings a character to life. It has also never been advocated to be the standard operating procedure, just something that is fun to do on occasion.
I'm looking to create MY character not 'chance's' character. In life I can see where you have to make lemonade... but when you're playing a game sometimes you'd rather not be dealt ingredients you don't want to work with.... or something like that.
EDIT: Or at least not until AFTER the character creation... then the GM and chance can hand you all sorts of stuff.
I'm looking to create MY character not 'chance's' character.
And generally I do as well, but sometimes it is fun to try and do it differently. The idea that it should never happen or that it just has to not be fun ever is a bit ridiculous. As I stated above, I am not advocating doing that for this game, just as a fun diversion sometime down the road.
djphranq wrote:In life

For a really fun, and hilariously short, game you should try 1st Edition D&D using the 3d6 in order method advocated. Almost no one ever qualifies for anything but Fighter, and occasionally barely qualify as NPCs.

That's what I was saying about life.... you know... 'when you get handed lemons you make lemonade' (sometimes you got to work with what you're given). But in a game its cool to have control over certain options.
I can sort of see the fun in the randomness. For me though it would have to be like a 'single session' type of thing where its just for a quick 6 hour scenario or something.... like if I'm in a 'pick up and play' type of mood.

Actually, I often DO find most TV, books, plays, and cinema to be boring. Most of it is vapid, poorly written nonsense anyway....
But that aside, your objections are nonsensical and kind of missing the point. This isn't acting. This is far more involved than acting is.
Assuming a role that you did not totally create can be extremely fun in a RPG. I like the idea that my character is not just an avatar for me in the game world but rather his or her own personality and that I have to make decisions in fidelity to that. You can do that with a character that you do completely engineer but starting with randomly generated characteristics makes it easier by front-loading the disassociation.
I highly recommend this approach, not only for its novelty but also as a means to get deeper insight into RPGing. RPGing is not like writing short fiction. You don't know how things will go and you are not in control of the story. Combine this with the realization that your character only exists as part of the story and it becomes clear that a heavy emphasis on control at character creation will not actually harmonize with the experience of playing the character. Simply stated, even if you do choose every detail about your character you still don't know what they will be like in play much less over the course of play.
If anyone wants to summarily state "I know for a fact that something I have never tried is no fun," whatevs.
Let me put it this way then - choose either manner of character generation as both are OK by me for this inaugural Play By Post Campaign here on Dakka Dakka!

Well then, I shall see what I can come up with! I haven't got the rulebook, but that's easily remedied. Also, I havent played WFRPG before, but I have played Dark Heresy. I believe that the systems are quite similar... Amirite?
WFRP Second Edition basically looks like an early version of Dark Heresy.
The class system is the main difference. It's actually pretty unique.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also Alpharius, I sent over my purchases with the starting 20 GP. Tried to get things that would make sense for the character...
That's where people expect you to tell the truth even though they can't double check what you're doing. So, if you roll crap for strength, everyone expects you to admit it but no one is there to call you out if you fudge the numbers.
It's not a system mechanic for WFRP. But it should be, if you're playing Bretonnian Knight!
As an aside, here's my character sheet, finished out.
Yay for ASCII codes.

To inform the others playing, I rolled up a human Initiate of Sigmar. I've already sent Alpharius the character, and will try to write a background to post here later.
I was going over the magic rules a bit and reading up on Tzeentch's Curse, and thinking that it wasn't to much to worry about I just grabbed four d10's and rolled 5,5,6,6, or two sets of doubles!
I rolled on the table to see what would happen and I lost 1 wound and 1 point of Magic for 8 minutes. I was 1 point away from getting "Whimsy" aka 'whatever the GM wants to do'.
Are we using optional encumbrance rules, and are we using advanced armor or basic armor rules?
Born on a farm to a farmer mother and woodcutter father, November Foerster distinguished herself amongst her four older brothers through her surprisingly steady aim and good perception at an archery contest during a summer feast.
A passing noble saw her performance, and, impressed, offered to have her be sponsored as a member of the local Roadwardens. The pistol and armor were both fairly cheap to him, and it made him look good amongst the populace-- and, who knows, maybe she'll be competent, too? That'd be a plus, it'd be good for business after all.
She has spent most of her time since then patrolling in a squad of other roadwardens, and only recently has she had her first solo assignment. This being the first time she's gone solo, November is eager to prove herself and impress her sergeant.

Spoiler:
Gnomes are known for their interest in Alchemy, but this one is different as she have interesting in culinary art!.
From Gnomish alchemy ingenuity she can create dishes that boosts stats, recover health/mana, and is delicious to boot.
Also carrying a bottle of Mystery Liquid ZX2, one drop can turn a bowl of food into the most vomit inducing vile stanched bio weapon,
where it is rumored to be as deadly as Skaven's Poison Globes.
Tired of seeing Gnomish product been bought off by highest bidding villains, the Gnome set out into the front line, more or less, hoping to
make a difference, or conjure up new recipes!
There is no 'cook' career. There is Peasant or Monk that could be flavored to like cooking, or possibly Apothecary, which I believe is a basic career. The Career Compendium has the most comprehensive list of Careers (or classes if you like). I think it might only be missing the Tome of Corruption chaos careers, though I don't think this is an evil campaign so I doubt we could take those anyway. XD
Camp Follower could also work (a traveling cook that sells his or her skills to armies), as could, as could a Servant (or possibly a Burgher if you'd prefer to own a restaurant), although none will start with the tools of the trade-- you'll have to purchase them with starting GP. Tradesman could definitely work, starting with any two trade skills and tools for them. Peasant could work as well, as they start with trade cook, but again, don't start with the tools of the trade.
So your best bet is probably Tradesman, with some secondary choices of Camp Follower, Peasant, and Servant, and a tertiary choice of Burgher or Valet.

Background
Spoiler:
Leopold grew up in a fairly pious household in a small farming village. His parents had a decent plot of land, but only had enough land to support their family and not much extra for the market, so he grew up poor, but happy. As a teenager, he fell in love with the miller's daughter, Theodora. At first, she discouraged his advances, but she eventually fell for him as well.
After marrying, the two lovers purchased a small plot of land on the edge of town. After a few years, their farm was running smoothly enough that they were able to expand a bit and opened up a bakery. Theodora took care of the baking and Leopold managed the farm. Her sweet cakes because famous throughout the region, and their fortunes continued to grow.
However, the one blessing they were missing was a child. Leopold would pray to Shallya daily, but she didn't see fit to bless them with their desire. He worried and worried, but Theodora would calm him, telling him "Shallya will bless us when she wills it. Be patient."
Just as he started to give up hope, they got pregnant. Leopold was overjoyed. However, by the end of the first trimester, something was clearly wrong. Theodora was in constant pain and very sick. Leopold redoubled his prayers to Shallya, often times spending days straight in prayer. But, it was no use; both mother and child passed a few months later.
Leopold was inconsolable. He lashed out at his friends and family, and eventually even the gods. He turned to drink to sooth him, forsaking all else. The farm and business quickly deteriorated and he was forced to sell all his possessions to keep himself in a constant stupor.
When the last of his savings were exhausted, Leopold was forced to travel into the city and look for work. He wasn't good at much, and spending most of his time at the local taverns, he fell in with a rough crowd. He discovered that the best way to ease his pain is to inflict it on others.
Now, he spends his days looking for trouble, and fighting for the highest bidder. His favorite work is smashing heads, but he'll take any job that pays well. He has some recurring work collecting debts for the local loan sharks, but most of his work is freelance. You can typically find him in a tavern, but now he spends more time looking for work than drinking.

I think I have everyone's character sheets... right?
Give me a bit to come up with a suitably plausible reason for you all to run into each other that doesn't involve a chance meeting at an Inn and we'll be off and running.
My character has an obvious reason-- she's on patrol, perhaps hearing a rumor of some trouble or other.
Though I might not get time to post in the next few days because I'm using my laptop, which lacks my rulebook pdf. It all depends on if I can get my desktop's ethernet adaptor working.

The stats from your clas... you mean the one free advance? Becuase you don't get ALL of the stat advances from your starting class, you have to purchase all but one of them with XP.
So it's right the way I did it there with an initial boost for being that class or are those just the options I get to pick from when I do the advance?
Vagabond, as a starting class, gives you the following:
Stats: One free advance out of hte following class potential advances: WS: First advancw BS: First and second advances Agi: First and second advances Int: First advance Fel: First advance Wnd: First and second advances.
So, for example, if you pick Agility as your first free advance, you would have the first advance for agility, and add +5 to your agility score. To advance past this class, you must purchase all of these stat advances, as well as having all of the skills nad talents for it (however, you start with all of the skills and talents for the class, so that's okay). Once you switch to a different class, if that class has the third or fourth agility advance, you can get those as well. However, in your new class, if they only have the first and second agility advances available, you already have those-- that new class will not allow you to increase your agility score any furhter.
You also obtain all of these:
One of: Common Knowledge (Bretonnia, Estalia, Kislev, or Tilea) One of: Gossip, Secret Language (Ranger Tongue or Thieves' Tongue) One of: Haggle or Swim One of: Heal or Perception Navigation Outdoor survival One of: Performer (dance, sing, or storytelling) or Secret Signs (Ranger or Thief) Silent Move
And you obtain all of these:
One of: Fleet footed or Rover One of: Marksman or Orientation Seasonede Traveler
And the following trappings:
Backpack Rations (1 week) Tent Water Skin
Keep in mind that you also have racial talents and skills.
Is this a bit better? Haven't even started equipment yet.

OK, I suppose - it is just that I've been absolutely slammed at work.
The current plan is to print out all of your character sheets and then compose the start - I've got it more or less planned out in my head, just need to put pen to paper.
I apologize for the delay, but 'real life' reared its ugly head and before you know it... delays!
Here's the list of players and characters that I have been sent/seen completed sheets for - I went and copy/pasted everything into an easy for me to consult document, but I seem to me unable to find some key pieces of info on some characters - please fill in the blacks (the (?)'s) where appropriate!:
Well now I think we should all post a theme song for what we imagine for the other characters.
For November (Melissa) I am selecting Mind Heist. When you listen to it imagine a 16 year old riding through the forests in The Empire, to or from something dangerous.
Yes, bad attitude. Game hasn't even started and your normal jackassery is already coming out.
Melissia wrote: Come on, you put yakety sax out. That's not something you'd use for any serious scene.
You said it twice about two radically different pieces. Are you not aware of what you do? Also, not every scene has to be serious. Sometimes life is funny. It wasn't supposed to be serious, and in recognizing that, a reasonable response isn't to be insulting (twice). I know it is in your nature to be off-putting, but I thought maybe a game would suppress that instinct to be an ass.
There's a difference between talking about differences in musical taste (as well as differences in opinion on when music is applicable to any given scene)... and using direct personal insults. So... I don't have any desire to continue this conversation, given its current direction. I think I'm gonna talk about WFRP2E's rules instead.
Hey Alpharius, how are we gonna do armor values, simple or advanced? I may have missed it if you mentioned it earlier.
Unless we all begin taunting him to get the game started! Don't worry Melissia, I'll call him Alf too!

Knaffur was born to a family of craftsdwarfs. He was raised with the respect and the normal surliness of a dwarf workman. In his early dwarf tweens. he travelled to Reikland, to observe the imperfections of the buildings of humanity. He made a habit of frequenting the libraries and academies, even learning to speak well with the empire's inhabitants. He saw one day a funeral procession inside the gardens of morr, and did the unthinkable, broke in at night. Scaling the wall and picking the lock, he took the gold necklaces and urns inside and fled. His father shamed of his actions, Knaffur needed a fresh start, something worth doing. He started robbing tombs, unfortunately of the slightly more affluent. He skulked in the shadows and watched for the richer marks....waiting for a chance to do something to right his wrong.
Just rebumping, might actually redo my character...I don't actually see a dwarf being a tomb robber without great loss of honor....which is against the dwarven way.

Grunkt was the younger brother of a romance between a noblewomen Dwarf and a smith, learning his trade from his father, Grunkt worked the long hours of the smith, developing a strong and tough physique. His father also taught him about combat, he helped fight off a greenskin raid on Karak Hirn. His mother taught him to speak Reikspiel, and about general dwarfen life. At the young age of 70, he was drafted into a group of raiders to help reclaim a section of the underdark. His band of brothers was wiped out by a goblin ambush, and he only survived when he was knocked out by a collapsing roof. fortunately, or unfortunately for him, he was spared death by his reflexes. suffering only a graze. On finding his party dead, he swore the slayers oath and shaved and dyed his hair.
