So this blog has progressed a wee bit and figured I would throw in some finished photos at the begining here, so here goes!
da land lubba!
forgeworld squig boss (needs clean up on teef and basing)
squigs!
BFSP boss
WIP nob biker/warboss landship
dakkajet
nob
EDIT: Got this moved to P&M blog section will be updating with completed photos of dakkajet, and the one stock manz/5 boys I have painted up of my clan thus far, along with future progress! Feedback is highly valued!!!
Ok so as title (no longer) says, giving my go at building some manz. I plan on 8 more after this fellow. I don't know that I will give them all shields but, I really like the idea that I saw on youtube ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_iMhE5jSjE )... Putting TL shootas on front of "storm shields". but his nobs are weedy in comparison to... http://orksforge.blogspot.com/ <---- those mega nobz
So I wanted to find a happy medium. I didn't want them to be ghazgul-esque and get shot by nearly everything everywhere so... and what I have come up with is just about same size as GW meganob, mine may be a hair taller.
Still need hydraulics, cabling, backpack, more rivets, more work on handle of shield etc. Any criticism/comments? Tips? Balls of flaming you'd like to toss?

I'll reserve judgment until after you add the gubbins. Right now, it'd make a decent Nob in 'eavy armor, but lacks sufficient bulk and "mekanical whutsits" for mega armor. If you do a decent job of bulking it out and teching it up (which isn't unlikely, considering the initial armoring), I think you'll be in good shape.

I don't think it needs much more bulking out aside from maybe arm plates, and the backpack? It's already larger than the standard mega nobs, and as much as i want to make them as big as possible, I feel like I'd be shooting myself in the foot having them nearly an inch taller? (I'm reminded of the tactical prowess regarding which avatar model one uses)..
I feel like the armor is TOO heavy for 4+ "eavy" armor... and if there are eavy armor nobz that come looking as bulky as mine point me to them please!
I feel like his gun is weedy. Gonna change it up some tonight I think when working on handle on shield...
Also speaking on the "mekanical whutsits" does a nob REALLY need hydraulics to lift a power klaw and a single arm plate? Why is it that heavy armor nobs in boy squads tote their PK around like a loaf of bread but mega nobz can't? I can understand lifting assistance for the TL shoota arm because of all the armor plating associated with it... anyways just somethin that bugs me!
I really need to raid an old broken watch or wind up car or something, for gears etc. Hopefully have time to get plasti-rod today for pistons and have time to work on them!
I am inclined to agree that it is somewhat lacking in regards to looking the role.
As your shootas lack any source of ammo, I might reccomend making an ammo-feed that extends from the bottom that connects to a backpack. The backpack would also help bulk out the model to better fill the silhouette.
I would also say to armor-up the right forearm some. Right now the klaw looks super tacked-on, and bulking that area could help to hide it.

Yeah I didn't have any energy to continue last night, was up till 3 am cuz of gals espresso I sipped and had work at 7 am! I originally used 2 sluggas to make the gun, and didn't look right. cut backs off and left barells etc. figured would patch in a "breach" or what have you and the other bits ontop of the left handle on the back side of the shield... but I do like your idea of having the ammo fed from the backpack.
I hadn't started a backpack/power source etc yet either. Need more tech lookin' bits. Hell I don't even have rod to make pistons. Gotta get that to finish too!
I feel the right arm needs more... i was going to add a plate over the bicep, but maybe that won't be enough. I didn't realize the klaw looked out of place/wonky.. I knew i needed to add some greenstuff straps for it, but that was my only plan relative to it.
The silhouette is something bothering me, when looking at the back. really do need a backpack/exhaust on the fella.
Maybe others won't find it quite as humorous, but I had considered a hamster wheel on the back of one? (with a grot/squig running inside)
WvLopp wrote: I agree with the others. It lacks bulk and looks like heavy armor. Otherwise I think it looks good
Compare a terminator to a normal marine.
I haven't ever found heavy armor lookin' this heavy! Granted this thing isn't as big as what seems to be the average MANZ scratchbuild, but... I have 9 GW metal manz that I don't want to look puny next to these guys... That along with LOS disadvantages is why I am trying to make sure to not go "too big"... If that gives any insight as to why I'm trying to refrain from getting overboard.
I'll post some side by side pics with a GW mega nob and an AOBR nob with this guy. I think that with mechanical what-nots and the backpack he will be bulky enough in the torso. His arms do need plates I think though. I think as others have said, the claw arm is bare/could use more to make it look unified.
I don't really know though, which is why I'm throwing myself to the pack of critical wolves that is dakka!
When I talk about bulk, I'm not simply talking about the size. It's more about the proportions, really. Looking at the stock models, MANZ have much squatter and bulkier proportions - so much so that there are barely any voids within the model's profile, from any given angle. "Bulking out" (perhaps "bulking in" would have been more appropriate...) with hydraulics and cables would, at least as I envision it, change the visual density (for lack of a better term) more than the outer dimensions.
Really, I think the lack of tech, at the moment, is what's causing people to draw all the 'eavy armor comparisons, more than the degree of 'eaviness of the armor. MANZ are described (and modeled, officially) as wearing powerful (and clunky) armored exoskeletons, not strapping plates to themselves. I don't have any examples to post, sadly, but considering how far many people go with their 'Ard Boys, I wouldn't consider this over the top for 'eavy armor, regardless of the numerical save it conferred.

Oadie hit it on the nail on the head. This is what I was unsuccessfully trying to get across.

Yeah it was never meant to look as if he merely strapped plates to himself. Only one store locally sells the rod I need and is only open when I am working so I have to make super quick lunch runs when possible so still haven't got thicker rod for piston. I think the rod i used for rivets will work for the smaller piece of piston. Still need to raid a toy car for gears for backpack.. and I know one of my buds has to be restringing a guitar soon.
On the bulkiness, I did some looking late last night and the stock manz actually have a plate on top of shoulders that is about 1/16- 1/8 inch taller (believe cables and stuff feed into it on backside). So I do need to add a little height which I didn't think it needed. I really do think that once I add the joints at knees, ankles, hips, elbows etc along with pistons that it will help quite a bit with the look.
I did chop the gun off. looked like
needs more DAKKA.. will have to work on it!
Anybody seen anything done like the aforementioned squig/grot wheel? I figured possibly skaven? Looking for something to draw inspiration from
appreciate all the input, nothing got done on it last night and by time I got a chance to look at it my room was so dark that my shoddy cell phone camera did little good
got a little time to work on it this evening. still needs quite a bit but figured I'd throw the progress up
thanks again for all the input everybody. any more ideas before I start workin on it again?
Automatically Appended Next Post: i think he's as done as he is going to get due to insomnia, and having a pile more to do. will get better pics in light of day
Now that's a Meganob! The extra plates and gubbins fleshed out his profile to proportions more along the lines of what one expects from a mega armored model. The work on the PK arm is great - gives him a lot of visual weight in a previously open part of the sculpt and fully incorporates the klaw into the suit, as I feel it should be. The techno/worky bits, while sparse, are conspicuous enough to give the suit a mechanically powered (or, at least, supplemented) feel. The gun, while perhaps a bit over the top when compared to a stock MANZ model, looks totally badass and scales well enough with the model, as you've built him.
With the slightly larger size and suitably impressive arm(or)ing of the model, he could be run as a mega armored warboss without issue. If you're building a whole squad of these, it's going to be intimidating on the table (or shelf, for that matter), for sure. You may have to build a Ghazzy-scale boss to go with these, just to keep proportions.
Anyway, thanks for the heads up on the build progress and job well done!
sickening wrote:I really like it! The gun is a bit much for a standard Manz but it's still cool. I would do some myself if it did not require so much work.
I think the first one is bumpy but once you have it down I bet someone could mash out a squad in a couple of nights if not 3? (having materials on hand helps aloooot.. so many trips to store... i still need to order hex rod for rivets instead of this round

I feel like the void there is finally filled (near his powerklaw), it didn't seem as off looking until someone else pointed it out. Thanks again! You've provided quite alot of feedback and it's appreciated! My technobits stock is low. Going to raid the old broken computers in the trailer at work today I think, as well as anything else I can manage to find with techno bit-gear-whuzz nots. (and will hopefully get some gears under/on his backpack after that. The stock manz gun is just not an appropriate amount of dakka. it's aight but... I'm gonna have to put some mini guns on a few more I think... hell.. my converted lootas are getting miniguns now... and my big shoota toting nobs.. haha styyyyyyyyylin' ? or something. I really want the squad to be goofy looking yet intimidating so I thought the oversized gun was appropriate. I think I will have one lad in the squad with a stormboy grot un-willingly strapped to him in attempt to gain flight, and the aforementioned grot/squig wheel powered suit if I can figure it out. Maybe too comical, but eh. dey orks.
When I can get some decent lighting i'll take a better pic. Hopefully get some WIP shots up of the next lads if I can start them over the long weekend. Hopefully will be building 4-5 side by side, maybe more if I can scrounge up some more bodies!
Now I have a finecast ghazgul model that I was going to just paint up (he's primered black as is..) but now you've got me thinking... maybe he could use mo-mega-armor... Unsure still.. we shall see! I think I will try and get this moved to P&M blogs and consolidate my painting stock manz/jet/other projects etc into this one thread.
Automatically Appended Next Post: #1 finished well, pretty much at least
Thank you! Really do love your work! Once I get the core painted of my forces going back to building MANZ for apoc games/deffwing lists!
Updated photo of AOBR mega nob with some lame hat that needs fixing, a nob with PK / big shoota + lame hat (I got my spellcrow heads/hats in day after i made these.. :blush ).. I was rushing to get this guy started/finished by 10-18 for Nerdfest's golden bathtub squad leader competition.. haha =]
without further bs!
family of fella's with hats currently
Nob with PK and Big shoota (my competition entry)
I still have a stretch to go, painting cables, more highlights, and washing, checkers, flames? skull and cross bones? considering making a flame burst at end of barrel of gun and giving him a warm glow from the OSL?
Thank you very much! Do you think it is distinguishable as a "big shoota"?
I figure it's plenty bigger than a normal shoota!
Also, I want to give it a muzzle flash... was looking at some from armorcast I believe in their cinematics section... Unsure about which one would be appropriately sized etc
Also very nervous about doing the OSL from muzzle flash as well
I finished this git up last night (aside from the muzzle flash/OSL if I can figure it out!) and gave him a coat of matte varnish
Couple of thoughts....
Painting a flame job on a power klaw requires a newer brush for me... Using my slightly bent tipped one I don't mind using for larger jobs, really proved difficult.
I think I saw a tutorial on dakka by gitsplitta on how to highlight checkers with grey/white respectively to make them pop more, tried this and LOVE it ... Note I only highlighted black squares with grey
I feel like my hat is bare and am considering constructing a skull/gob/cross bones "pin" to poke through front flap of his hat?
Still need to figure out the muzzle flash bidnezzzzz
I swapped a PK biker nob head for a spellcrow freebooter head w/ pipe, I like it. Gotta give him some more pirate gubbins tho. Started looking at the metal meganobz I have and realized that only a few of the freebooter spellcrow heads fit inside the gob very well.. So after I build them greenstuff necks to attach to body, I may have to go ahead and build custom gobz for each nob (which I think will bring some cool differentation to the squad..
Also plan on drilling out dakkajet this weekend, and highlighting its checkers similarly! That is if I can find time between gal time, social functions, and a 2k tourney sunday!
Possibly work on painting the biker boss (who will have warm OSL glow from bike exhaust so really need to figure that crap out..) and maybe some gretchin!
Will try to get updated pix of jet this weekend after fixing it up. Same with the Big shoota/freebooter nob
Thanks for all the C & C and have a good weekend errybody!
Thanks! I cut little wafers/discs out of styrene rod. About the size of the hydraulic rod, a little larger. You can even order hexagon rod which would even look more like the head of a bolt
I know how you feel. I have 4 partially built ones on my bookshelf. Concentrating on painting my stock MANZ, and rest of my 2k army before building new ones
more WIP shots of my nob w/ big shoota/PK for nerdfest's squad leader competition
I still need to add a skull and crossbones on the hat, might soot the barrel tips a bit, and add some more rust to pistol/ipalm of PK? Not sure if I have enough rust on it/have it looking quite right yet. It's hard to see the flame jerb on the PK but if ya zoom in ya can
Hello all I figure I would post some pics from other threads/of my growing horde for C&C. I have not rusted/weathered my meganob yet. Waiting on the rest of his squad to get a clean paint job complete so that I can do it all in one go for a little uniformity.
Without further failed brevity, my biker boss WIP: I need to sculpt him pirate hat I think. Thinking a bicorn, side to side like the maxmini/spellcrow/captain badrukk hats
WIP shot of meganob before the shark eyes got painted
Painting spellcrow heads for 3 of his buddies this weekend, will hopefully have a squad of 4 ready to be weathered next week... then just 2 more to go till my squad of 6 for 2k army is complete!
I have been using my scratchbuilt mega nob as a warboss for the moment. He's not big enough though. Going to make a real mega boss once I have time/energy to get my 2k painted before adding my deffwing...
Anywho hope everything going great for everybody and I'll get some updated WIP/finished shots up before too long. Trying to paint my army in 250-500 point blocks escalation up to my 2k list
thanks mate! grey knight player was complimenting my gatling-gun-toting-loota's (i'd say an assault cannon is a pretty loota-able gun right?? who's got a patent on the shape of deffgun anywayz i say???)
I'll try to get some pix posted soon if life allows it
Working on 2 of these. going to add some siding around engine/cab and put a large wheel on there with a grot (with pirate hat) driving it... Truck is broken and don't have gunner pedestal so goin to make something there. might cover it with planks. Will add a stick out the front of the mah... as well as the stock panels on the back of the truck, might add a top there, to make it like a capitans quarters and add handrails around the top.
the sails disconnect via telescoping tube
still needs more chains/ropes etc. maybe another grot up there taking a look. Also might add a mushroom box?
the manz have spellcrow heads, still need to paint alot of cables/wash/weather everything add more details/chips etc...
Still need to build them some gobs as well
anyhow enough blabbering, heres the pix. sorry for quality.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks for the replies! Hopefully you like this...
will have a grot captaing standing on a box. Going to put gunner on other side. will have a roof over captains head so a boy can stand there as well
shapin up
.... oh no we've been boarded!
captains deck holds 4, back compartment 4, and front holds 4 driver and gunner. Can fit meganobs inside captains quarters as well! Considering cutting out the roll bar w/ chain and hook on it because could possibly carry 2 MANZ up top, 1 in front, and 1 in captains quarters currently.. could possibly get 2 there w/ that roll bar gone..
I don't know why I wan't my trukks to actually carry their payload... but I do... Ha
Still need to make a back of captains quarters so that it's not exposed.. and give some windows over that I beam framing. The door on back will be hinged to open for easy access to models
On the wood grain, I plan on scratcing parallel marks/squiggles on eaching piece, and possibly hit it all with a little sand paper before/after. (this will happen prior to rivets going on)
When I do this to trukk #2 soon... I will be sanding the plank plasticard before cutting it up and gluing it on.. haha :cheers
Thank you very much!! Hopefully get it done and primed today!
Automatically Appended Next Post: Lady on way home from her folks so this may be all the major stuff I get done for a bit. Still gotta figure out the steering/captain, the big shoota.
Started putting paralely squiggles in the boards to create wood grain effects, looks alright enough
Got ladder steps put on but they didn't show up.
I need to put some stuff in captains quarters to make it more homely.. mayhbe a mushroom box, hog leg with choppa (out of way so models can be placed)
Also need a divider from the main deck and his quarters. a physical one all the way down would prevent model placement though... was thinking of like drop down cloth that is bundles up at the top/out of use so its open?
Would I just get tissue and coat with pva glue with twine wrapped around it or?
Anyhow... Figure another orky face wouldn't hurt it...
updates... Think its done lads. It doesn't have a gun as you see, but I think I'm going to magnetize a boy to stand a couple of places with a big shoota for that? Not sure.
lots o rivets etc.
hopefully start painting it soon!
(Woops had wrong pic here)
steering wheel/sub deck and handrails added
loads o rivets and woodgrain-ing (REMINDER, CARVE WOODGRAIN INTO BARE SHEETS BEFORE CUTTING PLANKS....)
fits just about right. might leave the driver off of it, or magnetize a grot as a driver/in crows nest once boys disembark?
rivets and wood grain
steering wheel/inside cladding.. added check plates to interior walls
anyways cheers everyone thanks for the kind words will hopefully get this done quick!
Won't be priming it until tomorrow night or afterwards, so if you have any final C&C it would be much appreciated!!
monkeytroll wrote: Good job! How about a speakin' tube for tellin' the enjinn room when ta go fasta - all da time! Or a little throttle lever instead maybe?
I like both of those ideas! Thinking about a throttle near wheel that says "FAST, FASTA, and ERE WE GO!" as the 3 speeds
Also... no one has mentioned it yet... but they need some BOOTY!
Will craft up a treasure chest full of gubbinz!
Maybe a good orky telescope on a swivel near captain too
Whoa man, that ship looks fething amazing! Incredible plasticard-work you did there, I love the wheel (and all the details!)
monkeytroll wrote: Good job! How about a speakin' tube for tellin' the enjinn room when ta go fasta - all da time! Or a little throttle lever instead maybe?
Throttle lever is a great idea. Goes from "Full Powa!" to "More full powa!" to "WAAARGH!" lol
Wish the lass was as appreciative of me tinkering with it, bahaha.
Do you all think I will have a problem usin this in tourneys? I tried to keep it small etc so no Los advantages... I don't plan on puttin big shoota at a higher elevation than stock. Figure could sub in a stock trukk for Los if need be, might be a problem once my other trukk is pirated as well...
Also if you have any ideas on how to apply this idea to a battle wagon, I'm all ears!
Orks and Pirates go together like rich folk and money. Great job so far. But Id suggest, making a couple different "hats" on all the boyz. Some would had do-rags on their heads for example, and tricorners and such, rather then them all having a similar hat. But great job so far
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, LURVE the grot on the boat, Not gunna lie, I want to paint that fella something fierce
for other variety I am ordering some pirate heads from spellcrow/maxmini (i love the expressions on the faces of the ones with bandannas in particular)
thanks mate, i think I might give him a sling over his shoulder for that gun, looks a bit eavy eh?
Thanks spiky, I'll keep it up. Glad you lads appreciate my work
these are pretty rough WIP paint shots so been gentle (stopped randomly when fixing overlap of silver/brown and applying rust to inside of bow/front of ram/face
Going to add splashes of color on the armor plating. probably a red yellow and a blue plate, who knows.
Thinking about getting those goblin pirate mini's from freebooter i think? one looks like he would make a mighty fine captain but over $5 a pop... and I really only want 2/5 or 3/5 the set
bought a trukk+boys box and have looted the wheels from my un-built 3rd battlewagon to make a buggy out of a deffkopta... Considering building tracks for front end of wagon or just not building it altogether as I don't really need it unless for APOC.... and try to build truck/buggies/grot tanks out of the parts.... Pirate ship style of course! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
also going to make peg legs and hook hands for quite a few boys when i have some time
currently working on a kaptain badrukk based mega boss
i dont want some WYSIWYG person making me pay 5 points for red paint if i dont have it planned into list. i usually just give trukks a ram, but the bosses gets a plank too
i wanted to red it the up!
going to make the battle wagons more metal clad looking I think, with wood plank floors, and patches over holes made of planks... but the majority of the wagons should be red/rusty....
my first wagon i think will look like a looted batllewagon from a speedfreak clan, then have a few posts going down to the existing old truck bed and into the turrent mounts and create a deck/crows nest/captains quarters on that level... and it be detachable?
thanks mates, lass workin tonight and tomorrow night... so hopefully will have some more posted up!
which raises the question...
what next?
Rokkit kopter air ships?
land ship-trukk #2?
battlewagon land ship #1?
Nob biker land ships?
Boys with peg legs and hook handz?
granted I still need to finish painting my land ship #1, and finish building the biker boss.. but... ADD with this stuff I swear.. Worse than you merlin!
A squiggoth kracken, diver nobs, deff dreads covered in barnicles, kans with roters, treasure cheast objectives/ flashgit horders, grot ships, forge world kill tank with a huge cannon and the whole pirate ship theme, could do the pirate ship theme with battle wagons as well...... first things that popped to mind. (hope this helps)

This. So much this. Especially the first ones!
And you need a warboss using an anchor on a chain as a weapon!

I don't have a squiggoth hmm... that idea sounds fantastic. I love the idea of the rickety wooden saddle-thing that holds a crew.. perfect for a mast and flag!!! (keeping eye out for appropriately sized squid like things)
Diver nobs! I like that. I have a second squad (and maybe a third.. and 4th... I know I know) that need completion... RIght now I have 4 speed freaks (3 with pirate heads).. And 4-5 stock metal ones needing paint + 1 custom built, and then 4-5 I started but never finished... I think I will do 1 squad as bad moonz, 1 squad as old style divers (round helmets) and 1 squad deffskulls.... I will have to add patches of planks to their armor (as well as to my existing red gits) like this crafty git from down unda badfang
Want to do some grot tanks (ships slightly large than bosses bike but same scale for grotz) probably count as buggies cuz dont got da rulz
I have 6 kanz and a dredd to work with as well, once I get my intial army I play with regularly down I will start on those. One of the gits i linked here has a blog on dakka about converting his old orks into freebooters, has big ol pirate hats on his kanz and what not.
Really need to work on some obj markers. I just cant ever for the life of me remember if dey supposed to be on a infantry base or 40mm???
i had planned a shark mouth on the boss' ship which i haven't spoken about yet, so some kopters to accompany him that look similiar would be cool
i was previously just gonna do flyin boats, with a mast/sail etc. might use extra copta blades on one as a pontoon style blower... one git always has ta be da fastest
updates updates.. Going to add a second mast in front of the skull on the handlebars. might give that skull a diamondplate/wooden pirate hat with a visor/slit for da boss to see thru
the magnet on the main mast has a hard time holding all that weight when he is on an incline so going to use paperclips or something to create lines/netting going down to the wide flange beam stick thing on the front. (sorry about my ignorance of nautical terms.)... anyways will magnetize those lines to front of boat as well for added stability, hopefully.
the 2nd mast will have another smaller flag, and a crows nest.
want to make a dual mini gun on a magnet that pivots on front of boat, with agrot gunner. would like him to have a stand/seat attached to gun that pivots with it... would also like to magnetize a skorcha to put between the barrels... so can run him as a nob biker, or a biker boss with kombi skorcha
thanks for lookin mates
shoulda photo'd the cut out for the deffkopta side panel... mass producing em haha.. made myself a lil template!
This freebootaz fleet is gonna be amazing on the table! Those land ships are awesome! How did you carve the woodgrain... sorry if people keep asking. Are you going to do any triangular sails? Also, I think da Land Lubba could use a few brighter colors, dirtied up of course. Just because it's freebootaz, thats all. They look fantastic.
thanks mate the local game club finally got to see the ships last night and got a kick out of em
I take a sheet of plasticard, and a hack saw blade and drag it longways pressing harder sometimes for deeper groves... quick 25-50 passes and you got some nice grain
usually hold 1/2 down and scratch up other half, then flip it around (area in middle sometimes gets heavier grains because of the overlap)
thanks mates, the comments really keep me motivated
i got a boyz + trukk box a week or 3 ago that has been sitting around. will try and get to it this weekend if I have time but its anniversary weekend so!
Dying to get some peg legs hook hands and bandannas made myself. as well as more tri corn hats and..... PARROT SQUIGS
Forgot to read the rules for obj markers in escalation league as well >.< again........
so no clue still what to do there.
Anyone have tips on the nob diver helemts? I was thinking starting with something like a marble/plastic sphere and then cutting a flat face on 4 sides for looking glass plates? then back one for where it connects to neck? Figured loads of wires/tubes... but since my army theme will be a land lubbing pirates I'm trying to think of a way to incorporate the diving suits... like... thoughts...
one smashed through rocks and have him painted lke hes in the dark/in a cave and use OSL like a flash light where hes looking lots/how he got down where he was? (base would have to be HUGE though... i mean enough rock to go 2-3" above him and create a hole in it where he fell through... it'd be like a walking terrain piece
Thought of giving one a chain like he was an anchor and make it look like he was digging his heels into the ground being pulled as the vehicles "brakes"
and some not so diver themed ones....
Thought about doing some wooden planks/rigging on their backs and create platforms/crows nests with grots.... masts with flags coming off their backs etc
Plan on doing the same to the badrukk model, have a big ol piece of an ork engine on his back currently, building the hydraulics on his mega armor then will post pics once it's all basically together. The mast from the biker boss and his should be interchangable though in case i'm not using both models and forget one
the hearts! I love your manz! his PK looks weedy though1 I had same issue with mine, eventually put more plates on top of it connecting to his arm gizmos. someone told me mine looked "tacked on" and Thats how I fixed it at least!
sorry for the delay all. hopefully have more pix posted this week. not alot of updating, got 1 loota painted out of 15. he still need some OSL/basing/weathering so not done yet got the skin on the other 14 gits partway done at least
been majorly distracted by my night goblin army that is coming to fruition.
assembled a good 60 of the buggers so far. a mangler squig, and have 6 squig herders and 14 squigs to build next then start getting the rules down more. (been play testing rules against my old wood elves which I can hardly remember how to play).. been cutting 28 gauge galv. steel plate from home depot and gluing into movement trays and putting rare earth magnents in greenstuff pockets on bottom of bases
nothing worth taking pictures of though.
sorry mates!
Had a wonderful christmas vacationing in colorado though!
Got distracted playing fantasy fellas... still green over here though!
finished speed painting this little git up saturday night for a contest sunday at the local GW for a hero/lord contest... I won!... being the only entry!
Laaaame! Wish I would of had actual competition! Hopefully when I enter my squad of spearmen on the 27th or my ork boyz squad lead by the freebooter nob I already have posted here on the 20th will have more competitors!
still need to mixed some evil sunz red and bleached bone maybe? to get a little brighter red on the squigs. (and on the orange squig with his tongue out's eyes, his seem a bit dull)
considering using the even brighter pink I have as well to highlight gums again?
I have another 12 squigs to paint for this unit in the escalation league .. so any tips would be appreciated.
not to mention 5 squig hoppers..
and a "the chase" unit filler
then a mangler squig...
and a goblin warboss on great cave squig..
and hopefully some squig themed artillery (or squig delivery systemz) (squig lobba (squig chained to a rock bein flung. thinking like the ball on a chain bitey-thing from mario.), doom diver (with flying squigs)
thanks for lookin mates
will finish da land lubba in a couple of weeks, as well as my biker boss, finish painting a squad of 10 boys, and 3 nob biker land ships (for escalation league goals)
Heres my lists:
warboss bike pkbp cybork skorcha
3 nob bikers 1 painboy upgrade cyborks 1 skorcha 1 bc 1 banner 1 pk 1 bp
10 boys 1 nob uprade eavy armor pkbp big shoota, shootas on boys, w/ trukk
goblin warboss heavy armor 5+ ward ironcurse icon gw
ng big boss gwbsb
23 ng full command spears
20 ng spears (maybe bows?)
5 squig hoppers
7 squigs 3 herders
doom diver (aka flying squig launcher)
this is just a fun army, but want it to be functional. could drop the gobbos down a bit and beef up the squig herd.
would be fun to bring a warboss on squig at this level
couple of WIP shots, need to finish BSB and squig slingshot today... have lots of details to finish on this guy and my gobbos but will probably finish em up later this week.
sidewayz, cause i'm lazy
Automatically Appended Next Post:
also, don't glue the mouth on until you paint the tongue. im not painting the tongue as a result of being a herpederp
so.... the first round of reinforcements have arrived.
in the form of 30 squigs / 10 herders from the electronic bay.
20 of them are metal (including 1 oop larger squig), and 10 are finecast.
all 10 handlers are metal, including 2 that are OOP
next incoming batch will be...
these guys...
52 on the way, including i think 10-12 rogue trader era. Green doesn't quite fit the theme of my army and I'm not sure how many are metal/plastic so... Might have to just keep them as is (well rebasing them on 20mm square of course)... cause the paintjob seems to be pretty good.... i'll feel like a d bag playing with models i didn't paint though? which makes me want to strip them....
the red primed ones i got, 20 are metal like i said so I could strip them... just paint the 10 finecast ones as red...
currently my squig units are as follows... help me pick some color themes
squig herd 3 oj / 4 red
boss on orange squig
boss on squig (unpainted)
10 squig hoppers (unpainted)
mangler squig (1 started red, other squig in the duo is still primed black.. figured do him up as OJ or yella)
squig slingshot / squig flying through air (unpainted)
20 base coat red metal squigs
10 base coat red finecast squigs
52 various green squigs incoming
14 fine cast squigs (unpainted)
Currently my NG have yellow moons, silver edges on shields... red hood on captains, haven't started the yellow flames on hoods yet
I prefer orange/yellow/red squigs myself. I thought having some lucky blue squigs sounded good as well. I have these 52 green ones though and... trying to figure out a good scheme...
thoughts mates?
thanks for reading through my diatribe, brevity not a strong point, i know.
Currently i have 4 red squigs, and 3 orange... my mangler will be 1 red squig, and 1 orange? (next mangler probably different colors)
Some of the liter green ones could be given a couple washes of red/yellow/orange to (maybe) give their skin a veiny look. They all look like metal ones, tho, so it should be easy to strip them.
Also - WOW! That's a lot of OOP squigs! It looks like there are less of the newer squigs.
Yeah, that long legged one is from the first run of squigs. They were all different breeds. There's one tho, that looks like one of the familiars set. Second row, four from the left.
I can't wait to see them all in one herd. You lucky git!
all my ebay watching like a hawk paid off finally, (and all my contempt at other bidders for beating me on numerous other previous auctions pushing me to buy it now when I saw these)
Hopefully they show up the 6th. Played my first 3 escalation games against dwarves x2 and demons, resulting in 2 major victories, and one very minor. (came down to 2 standards!)
I was running...
50 NG nets spears 1 fanatic
gobbo big boss general
NG big boss standard of discipline
NG warboss on squig spear enchanted shield LA dragonbane gem
9 squigs 11 herders
21 squigs 14 herders
5 squig hoppers
doom diver
the success of the squigs led me to think.... 2000 tourney next month... what to do?
common gobbo general
2 bosses on squigs
lvl 3 sham
lvl 2 sham
50 ng nets spears
50 ng nets spears
archer bunker (small)
mangler squig
mangler squig
doom diver
10 squig hoppers
then... maybe 2 pump wagons (need to make squiggy ones)
maybe a goblin wolf (squig) chariot as well or 3? (problem being i dont want to spend special points when I can easily field 1000 points of just squig herds not to mention 120 worth of hoppers?
what would yall do?
I am going to try and work with the existing paint jobs on as many as I can, as they look good to me but just not my particular color scheme. a few bright green ones have to be kept I think though!
I'm VERY happy there are soo many oop and yup all 52 are pewter!
I was unaware of the familiars set, will have to look it up!
The hard part is going to be deciding which squigs will pull chariots, pump wagons (thinking a rolling squig cage with a wood chipper on front blending food for the gits), etc... I would like to make some count as trolls out of squigs... Reaper make some mushroom men, was thinking of gobbla being held by a chain by a mushroom man? I don't know though. I don't really use trolls. Nix that.
I'm glad that it will be easy to strip them, time to get some simple green concentrate on LAtotalyawesome or whatever
Also need to find me some good spray paints for base coats to save some time!
I really think some royal blue squigs are going to have to happen, as well as lots of orange, and yella!
my 52 squigs showed up today, as well as my zomblin command group which wasn't included in my first batch of stuff from titan force, but it showed, bwoop, thanks titan forge.
the squigs might have been really poorly shipped, with no protection at all making the paintjobs about ruined on all of them, so strippin 90% of em it is!
in other news, about finished this guy, needs some work on teeth where i didnt finsih up, and some basing elements... not sure what else?
makes me wanna punch the git in the mouf for being so good.
bastard.
In any case, I'd like to go back to my currently painted squigs and achieve the extreme high light like he did if anyone has any tips.... I'm assuming mix in bleached bone and highlight to hearts content...?
So I only have about 160 night goblins, but I figure I could get up to 3000-3500 points (barely above min. core value) but figure expanding on gobbos is easy.
so, I ordered 8 chariot bases, will make some squig themed chariots and pump wagons. how many gobbo chariots do people usually run together though?
I figure I should make a count as giant or 2, (small giant squigs) (taller i figga)
and a coupla count as arack spiders, again giant squigs
I like how you did ur freebooters, i just love the whole ork stereotypical pirate theme, gets me every time. Oh and extra brownie points for that mega-nob, imo scratch built mega nobz look better than gw ones.
Can't wait for the gargant-squid, but it looks a bit bland right now, but im sure ull fix it good and propa'.
Oh and friendly advice, read my signature.
Been working on some squigs. Used whiffle gold balls. Had 1 bigger from a kids play set. Little cutoff and putting some coverage to fill in holes for now.
Thinking of making these where I can cast them, have myself 3 more mangers, plus a bunch of great cave squigs/squig here fillers
Figure these would be good practice for the colossal squig!

woops missed your post, yeah i had added a quick post after the fact reiterating those were just some squigs another fella did I found online and like, and will hopefully imitate to a degree.
Thank you mate, I love the custom mega nobs people make.
my photogrpahy is extremely poor, I know, when I have something worth taking a good photo of I'll work harder on that aspect
wazzoo2000 wrote:this is going to be epic.........lol.............hurry up i cant wait lol

haha jokes aside, IM REALLY PUMPED ABOUT THIS PROJECT. I haven't touched my orks in ages!

Thank you! Really do love your work! Once I get the core painted of my forces going back to building MANZ for apoc games/deffwing lists!
Thank you. I'm going to subscribe here, your work is really awesome. Spacecats made a translation of my MeganobZ tutorial.
How do you realize the wood effect in Plastic card ? I'ts unbelievable !
Congrats for your freebooterZ army ! They are awesome (and I can't wait to see what you will doing with these ball :p)
Thanks for subbing Lucius, and your compliments. I have subbed to you as well. I'm considering doing an ork mercenary force "count as" DA army or some marines, so I can use more MANZ... and so I can deep strike/drop pod those gits. I'm not playing much 40k these days, and my goblin/squig affair has gotten in the way of my freebooters. Maybe I can make some of my manz in your style for variety when the time comes.
The way I achieve woodgrain is, cutting styrene into a long strip 12" long by whatever width you want board/plank. I then take a hack saw blade and drag it perpendicular across this strip repeatedly, changing pressure and gradually sweeping direction back and forth to give the lines some curves. after this is done you sometimes will have a fine power/dust/shavings accumulated on facing of wood. I do not sand this. I use my thumbnail and drag across it scraping it off. When I try sandpaper it removes this but then begins removing the top layers of plastic and removing some detail of the "grains" you just cut.
On the ends I cut triangular shapes out to look like split ends of boards/wear & tear
There is a good instructional video on youtube, which I can't find at the moment.
The fella uses a "razor saw" instead of a hack saw blade. I would use one too if I had one, but I don't.
will post some better photos later this week hopefully.
for now this tidbit. added a pile of sprues/legs/arms/etc and going to GS a sheet covering it and let the goblin ride atop the pile. (hes not glued in currently so holding the reigns wonky)
its an OOP undead chariot from way back when. the NG are from titan forge. "zomblins".
in other news, I stripped the 52 metal squigs. some paint left in crevices, figure maybe bathe them in acetone and electric toothbrush again?
in other other news, have 9 more of those chariots to work with. figure make 3 squads of NG themed tomb kings. (cave kings!)
problem is, the scythes on the wheels. freakin huge! like 1" long. you can't rank the chariots up together because of this. the scythes poke through the spokes of the chariot next to it.
even if i removed the scythes from middle chariot, the outside ones would be pokin thru the middle one... i suppose i could leave the scythes on just the outside wheels of outside chariots... but seems lame as hell.
any thoughts? i thought of using cardboard to boost the heigh of the chariot like it was bouncin over some rocks? but I figure that might get in the way of gameplay. ie. making me a hidey hole to put someone behind the terrain on the base and use it to BLOS? (my understanding is that no rule in fantasy exists that you ignore basing elements for TLOS like in 40k)
I just didn't want to seem lame. I would always let people have TLOS through it if they allowed me the same courtesy to their basing elements..
warning shameless self promotion
In any event, I figure I can get the VC and TK armies done in a few weeks time, showcase my speediness, and skills or lack thereof. In all seriousness though, I've decided to try and do some commission work and build my reputation up and hopefully supplement my income. Hopefully once I get my 3d printer up and going, can do more. (print rough armatures to be sculpted onto more quickly for instance)
I will hopefully for now be offering services sculpting, scratchbuilding, kitbashing, and painting. I can do it all if you really want. I'm only offering what is in my comfort zone. Don't expect golden daemon quality work from me. I feel like I can do above table top quality though, but not "true" display quality. I may call it my display quality, but in comparison to some other individuals... it won't compare! However, I think those individuals would probably charge a lot more.
I don't have a website yet or anything, so if anyone has any helpful hints, suggestions on where to go next, I'm all ears. (really interested in what website one would use etc.. I'm not a programmer or anything near one. Hell if you know me from dakka, that should be evident with my plethora of broken links, sideways images, etc. Sad part is in addition to my job, I also wear the hat of the resident "I.T." guy at work. sad state of affairs it is! lol
I plan on starting a new painting/modeling blog dedicated to just commission work. so keep an eye out if you're interested.

The Squig Cult look sweeet, you've actually tempted me into trying some Fantasy Gobbo's myself!
...Now go back to your Freebootaz, you might just inspire me to get my butt in gear with mine again
Thanks alot mate! I love my goblins. They are a lot of fun. They remind me more of orks in 40k in 5th ed, when deffrollas were king. more randomness, it's fun.
The only downside is losing because of animosity. Setting everything up just right, for the lynchpin unit to animosity and charge out on its own into some nearby random scrub unit, blocking all other charge paths etc, exposing its flank to my opponents primary block.
Happens like clockwork every couple of games, lol.
I understand Sneakygobbo's frustration with NG in tournament settings more clearly now!
hahaha arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! I will try mate. Once I get these 2 undead armies off the ground (har har har) I'm going to have to decide on which of these to finish out. I would really like to enter Armies on Parade with my freebooters or squig cult... but not sure which. The squig cult just needs painting really to get done in time... I have a lot of scratchbuilding for the freebooters, and the painting to boot (har again).
I have until june 29th to enter. so roughly 3 months. I suppose I SHOULD have time to finish either... or both...
I haven't been playing 40k lately honestly. It feels stagnant, and boring. Really really boring. Maybe just needed something "new" like fantasy for a break. The last FAQ about the wound pool/range stuff annoyed me as well. Seems like a fairly large oversight in the rules, not near as niche as FNP vs force weapons etc. I know its easy to just agree before the game, but the ruling disinterested me in playing 40k in a tourney setting for sure... each tourney will rule differently (regional tourney here used their house rules for instance... yeah they got a REALLY great turn out, lol)... Instead of just playing RAW.... its like, I know the rules don't make sense, you know they don't make sense. At least they stay the same until a new faq published for us all to base our army composition and tactics upon... its a common ground. I don't know, getting off topic here. lol
I suppose that's why I'm a bit bitter about 40k now, and not as interested in finishing my freebooters yet.
thanks monkeh. they have a good looking night goblin looking necromancer on a skele-squig too. not to mention a lot of other interesting sculpts. Some nice night goblin lookin ghosts as well!
so I have recently purchased 4000+ points of really old orcs and gobbos, most from 91-94 i think? Including an ollllld wyyvern which is DYING for a goblin on top... In any case, most are painted too! will get good photos and update blog with them soon, trying to identify them all still. I'm hoping I can salvage the paint jobs (need lot of tidying up, highlighting, washing, eyes painted to match my style etc.. have to decide whether to use old paper banners on them or make new ones etc), update the bases etc. (remove flock, paint edges black, add ballast, paint and add tufts/static grass... any tips on how yall do this would be great. I figure just use a knife and scrape the crap off. Pics in gallery of the lot minus the 75 wold riders, if interested
Also picked up 16 bret knights, a friar tuck bow fella, and a damsel. So hopefully have that project in works before long.
I also have gotten a commission painting some hobgoblin looking gits with revolvers from Malifaux for a local. Will post photos of those when done. A buddy showed me some artillery on ebay that sold for $35+$8 shipping.. had 2 old metal lobbas and some truck bits, hodge-podgey looking. Quite a bit qas scratchbuilt I think. It didn't look bad or anything but I'm thinking I could make better looking ones scratch built (but using 50% gw parts just no metal lobba kit) and charge the same $ and it be worth my time? I have boxes and boxes of ork bits on sprue, leftover vehicle kit parts, unbuilt truck kits, etc... ripe for creating!
I have been cleaning up my workshop/office/gaming room or whatever and have been trying to get everything organized/staged. Hoping to start putting in some serious work soon and get my NG undead army out, the TK, and then have to get back to the squig cult and freebooters.... Will start updating this huge lot a bit later I think. Will use them as is for time being while I fry bigger fish. (even if this is the biggest proverbial fish I suppose)
Been trying to decide on the TK theme.... should I use VC skeletons on the old undead chariots? or Night goblins painted as skeletons? (didn't want to get too confused when playing VC vs TK).... Figure I could do the VC night goblin skeletons in red robes, while the TK are in blue robes?.. figured could use BFSP archers as skeleton archers I need for TK as well.
finished my first commission, some malifaux dudes. customer just said wanted blue robes and gave me free reign.
was supposed to be a cheap paint job, put nearly double the quoted time into it, didn't want to turn out crappy looking minis.
hopefully he appreciates em when he receives tomorrow!
pictures are bad I know, hopefully have lightbox access before long.
and what i've been up to for me
boo!!!!
kinda a cluster
we have
spider riders as hex wraiths needing bases finished
titan forge ghost dudes the outstretched arm guy and ones with hands behind his back will both be holding scythes behidn their backs (after though, didn't realize ya could take wraiths as heroes!)
Finished spider rider hex wraiths (no converting at all just painted em like ghosts cuz I'm LAZY)
Finished the skeletal spider steeds for black knights
Considering giving vamp on hell steed a jawbat from Titan forge to ride on? Maybe sculpt wings on a squig I already have to save monies.
Been working on old gw skeletons, Titan forge zomblins, noisy ghosts, and these black knights
Also managed to clean/update a doom diver, pump wagon, rock Lobba, and squig catapult from last big purchase I made. Just have them washes of agrax and a little highlighting. Bases doom diver, rest to come
how the hell did I manage to get my photo upside down, lets try this again
Squigsquasher wrote: Hell yeah, pirate Orks! Subscribed for sure! YAAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!
waaaaagh! love your enthusiasm
I haven't touched the freebooters in some time. have gotten really bored with 40k but hopefully we will start seeing rumors of a new ork codex and maybe that will reinvigorate me.
I have a bunch of my orks half way painted. should finish them up really.
Should hopefully have pix of malifaux commission posted this evening, as well as my hex wraiths and black knights.
As far as 40k goes, I had been considering starting a different army to maybe generate more interest for myself. I was thinking, grot rebels sounds like fun. I saw the chibi space marine someone made using shoulder pads, was thinking maybe I could maye a "space grots" army. Cheap marines in pods from SW, ADL with gun, longfangs, a runepriest, maybe a lone wolf (c'mon a grot lone wolf? yeahhhh) ... and have allies for them.. maybe blood angels? mainly so I could bring death company grots, lol.
Ok too many projects on my plate as is
If anyone has good links on imperial grot heads/models (like a commisar) drop me a link.
Also, is about time for another supply drop of plasticard. Plastruct bent me over on shipping last time and didn't tell me shipping rate until after I paid, frankly kinda upset me. So if y'all have any distributors online I should be supporting lemme know!
Been a minute since I have updated, busy busy busy.
finished these guys up for a fellow at the FLGS
My buddy plays dwarves in fantasy, and needs a grudge thrower (or 6) built, and the first of which I got the idea, thinking about dwarves and horses, and what to do with his BFSP pony from the grudge-cart.. (knowing he liked lord of the rings)... Lets make a "grudge-pony thrower"!
I'll update with a picture later, currenlty looks a bit like a trebuchet with the cart as a weight, and the horse all bug eyed (cartoon style like slayer in my corpse cart) in mid toss.
i have a commission for a fellow here on dakka doing a forgeworld biker nob painboy, its about done, need to fix syringe, fix all the finecast/fw bubbles (believe he got a set of miscast bikes, then a set of good ones to replace them. so i have been working with the miscasted stuff).. Need to green stuff the guts up, including coating the intestine the grot is holding onto.. wrap handlebar in grip tape etc. just about done other than that though.
sorry they are out of focus, i was pretty tired.
there are more earlier WIP shots in my gallery that are more in focus if you want to see more details.
got some new shots of the jet
vrooooooooom!
hopefully have a bigger update for you all soon on the squig-front. Should have tonight to paint away and trying to get my 3000 point army all painted up.
I'm amassing all of the squigs I have and will get a good shot of them, it makes me happy just looking at that many squigs ready gobble up stuff.
Thank's fellas. I appreciate it. Night goblins are a labor of love.... In case anyone didn't know... and respect to all skaven players, everywhere. oh my god.
I based 140~ goblins and 20 squigs last night.. (already had them attached, cleaned up etc just needed sand glued down...)... I also managed to make 4 war machine diorama base things with cut outs for a 60mm round to spin an aim, and 3 crew each... (dont need no stinkin bullies!)
so much work. Hopefully tonight I will get them all primed. Hopefully hook up the airbrush and (finally) use it for first time since I got it for my birthday last August... busy man I am :/ The plan is to prime the 10-20 squigs I have left that aren't primed red (30 i bought on ebay were primed red, figured just go with it) in orange and yellow. I had considered doing some blue squigs too. Still might.
Still need to sculpt my manglers. need 3 more for upcoming tourney. Was just gonna cheap out and put a squig hopper + a squig on a 60mm base and call it a day but.... sigh... if I'm gonna do it, might as well do it right.....
My 3k list also calls for a 2nd pump wagon (this one with the sail)... so I figure it's an oppurtunity to mix the night goblins and freebooters up a bit... and I think i will make one of my planned squig chariots into a pump wagon with a pirate-ship sail (with pirate squig captain).. kinda breaking theme of army, but who gives a gak.
and for like the nth time, I'll ask (not that i'm annoyed or anything, im definitely not, just really looking for answer and hopefully someone will read this!)... I have seen spellscape miniatures blog a long time ago paint these squigs up... and I REALLY like the hard line extreme highlight and have NO clue how to achieve it. it looks like bleached bone almost. That can't be right. In any case, any tips would be appreciated. I have so many of these buggers to paint up!
My planned force for armies on parade. Sans skarsnik, a squig gobba, and a display board/finished painting.
The pump wagon needs alot of work still, most importantly a sail crows nest and spiky rolls. Not to mention tiny squig crew with pirate hats? Idk maybe no hats.
The warboss on squig had a break on spear so magnetized an axe blade in the shape of a night goblin, frowning when he's lookin at you and grinning in backside of blade. Need to paint it up
Squigsquasher wrote: May I say that the Terrifying Mask of Eeeee! is the best named wargear item ever.
Anyway, great work as always!
Right? it IS the best named wargear! I might have to use it as a crown of command as well, depending on what my list calls for. hehe
Thank you!
Looks like i did have a photo of the in progress unit fillers!
and a shot of my cheap ass plastic case having part of my 3k army laid out on it for transport.
da PLAN!
cut those footprints out (DONE!)
liquid nail steel sheet to bottom of container (NOT DONE)
magnetize bottom of movement trays (NOT DONE)
magnetize whole army (80% done!)
I still need to add a shelf unfortunately I think, or carry 2 boxes. unsure which will win/be easier.
Also working on this guy:
FLGS needs 6 and thinking of trying to make it marketable online/shippable. Hoping to get a prototype built in next couple of weeks. Design may have to change a bit because these are coming out to be more expensive than I planned/hoped for (but still cheaper than the modular gaming table on indiegogo. Granted the weight capacity are very different. I think a grown man could sleep on mytable and the other table visibly sags in their photos under the weight of the RoB board it seems? In any event I hope this chap gets funded and gets his tables made! I hope I get mine done as well thought I'm currently not trying to get crowd funding.
My other idea was to make a carrying/display case for game tiles. a box with shelves for RoB tiles (or home made magnetized equivalents) to slide in and enough vertical room (say a minimal size for just boards, a mid range height between boards for infantry to stand up on top of, and a 3rd design with levels for monsters/tanks/etc? One could skin it in plexiglass for display purposes, or whatever they want. Could have a tower with a 24"x24" foot print with as many boards as you wanted tall stacked up each acting as a display board for a particular army? just ideas floatin around da noggin. FOCUS!
So busy busy busy over here. Spring cleaning, working on my armies on parade display board ( a mushroom village!) for my night gobbos, and trying to get my night gobbos finished of course. 6 weeks!
sob. just lost my whole post to getting logged out whilst posting. grr
i live in moore, oklahoma so if you've seen the tornado in the news you can understand if updates are sporadic in near future. i'm ok, so is my family. our houses, pets etc all ok. we lived about 1 mile north of the center of the destruction. many friends and their families were not as lucky and lost very much so i am counting my blessings. tornado has given my hobby projects plenty of time to dry. with power back on last night I looked around the hobby room and remembered I had my metal lined boxes lined with books still!
so here they are
i had even wrote up a mini tutorial/helpful hints i learned while doing this but all lost >.<
pics are side ways, sorry. im a failboat
i'll retype some of the tips real quicklike
30 mil magnets = good for plastic infantry not for movement trays or metal
60 mill = acceptable for small metal models (havent tried big ones) and for movement trays if line bottom to stick it to fridge or metal case/toolbox whatever
hobby lobby 4.99 1" wide strength 3 magnetetic adhesive tape or whatever the feth, is similiar to 60 mil in thickness in strength from my observation. so is a good local supply. you can line bottom of trays with this stuff instead of ordering 8.5x11 sheets if you have hobby lobby locally
Wip pump wagon. Needs ropes, pirate hats on squigs, sculpt board around ones feet on top of squiggy rolla. Also have another small squig to be running inside but gonna paint him first before glueing in for easy-mode
Here's my planned 3k tourney army all fit in a single tote finally! YEAH
Just missing the savage Orc shaman. Trying to find a suitable model on foot to convert. Want to put a saddle or throne/platform on top of him with a goblin riding and whipping him
Man loads of gobbos to paint. Less than 2 weeks to armies on parade. Real life been a mah. (Those of you who know who j roc from trailer park boys is will get my humor).
I want mo' variety of squigs so I decided to sculpt a count as arachnarok. Gonna do some troll sized ones as well and have a cave troll be a herder for them!?
Here's the arachnarok squig wip just first layer of putty and lips/eyebrows/eyes
some comments though:
I don't like the way he is moving forward, seems silly and off to me, maybe re-position him slightly on the base?
I also think the tower/goblin base on top of him should be larger and more elborate with various levels, maybe some little spots on his sides, more similar to the one on the spider set, this one seems to small to me, but it might just be the angle that the camera shows it.
All in All though Awesome stuff here!! Love the ideas, and it is coming out in the correct directions!

Thank you very much for the kind words! His position isn't my absolute favorite but, I had to make some concessions. The framework of his lower leg isn't strong enough to support te entire model in case of a fall I'm afraid. So I wanted to connect I base at 2 locations which meant having him rest on central rock that has brass pipe in it. I didn't want the support to show huh meant lettin him sit on the rock.
Once I established that was the "plan" I decided to try to make it look like he was stomping around a bit? I think I mah need to make claws on that foot larger and maybe curled a little?
Maybe that would help translate stomping better?
In any even, hopefully squig narok #2 will have a better pose.
I think I may make him crouching ready to jump?
The framework up top is a little larger than pics show. Should shoot it from above tonight. I had considered addin a walk way around perimeter of the fence like the arachnarok has but I wasn't sure
If it would make it look like he was wearing a big hat. Especially if I use the BFsp tent up top as a catch web shrine... I mean at first I was on board with giant squig with giant wooden wizard hat but.. Didnt like idea of it in practice
Thanks again for comments on pump wagon, since then I have added pirate hats to all those gits!
if it's not obvious as of yet, I didn't finish my entry for armies on parade in time. My boss left town week before leaving the biz up to me, which lined up perfectly with my GF breaking her tailbone (falling off a stripper pole in our living room doh!) , which really cut into my gettin-crap-done-ability.. Which has lead me to go ahead
well CRAP
this is how my most recent purchase arrived in the mail >.<
they were all together, assembled, on bases as manglers... you can see they all broke in transit.....
contacted buyer just now, sheesh...
Hope it all resolves itself! I know he will take returns, if I pay shipping.. but kinda rubs me wrong way to be out $5 on shipping for someone else' error in packing carefully..
Now I only paid $52 USD for all of these, which is alot lower than what buying 8 bosses on squigs would run me anyhow.... but I'm curious, do you feel I am right in asking for a partial refund? I agreed to pay $52 for them as is, not broken. I realize that legally, it seems, I need to return them, in order to have a leg to stand on for my refund... but then im out $5, and have no squig bosses.... I know, I want to have my cake and eat it too, what do you think?
Got a 20$ refund from that ebay deal! Bwoop bwoop! Super cool seller! Gotta strip these guys soon. Walmart didnt have dawn power dissolver so gotta hit up another one
Started workin on a squig wyvern model for a goblin (count as orc) warboss.. At this stage it looks a bit like sperm lol
I liked both versions of the wings set up, but I have to say the Dracula version was my favourite.
As for the saddle I have a couple of ideas, one you could use a coffin lid cut in half for the back of the saddle seat as a back rest or even a broken gravestone.
Secondly as for the reins maybe chains connected by piercings to the squig skin, gives it a more evil feel hope this helps some and it looks great so far.

I liked dracula alot myself. I wanted to save it for a vargulf count as that will be pretty much same as this but without a rider. maybe bits of hair, not sure
I like your idea for a coffin saddle thing. This guy is for my squig cult-goblin army, but I do have an undead night goblin army as well, and plan on doing a vargulf up similarly. I may reserve the coffin idea for a larger mount, such as a zombie dragon or terrogheist ?
I think I will end up going route of piercings in sides of squigs mouth like a primitive bit/champ or whatever for a horse. Would also not make it appear to have an empty "seat" if I wanted to use this guy as a count as vargulf for my undead NG's in mean time (or a 2nd once i sculpt other)

That aould help show the trampling effect, maybe some messed up tree next to him or something to further show the destruction he has left in his path? It could also be the gravel under him which i assume is helping hold the model up, it looks weird so close to his belly there, its still a wonderful model, just something
Jumping would be pretty awesome, but may have balance problems there as well? Maybe try to help him stand up with some sort of framework that goes towards his back and acts as a balancing mechanism for the model?
I like the idea of the walk way around the model, but yea it may look like a big hat which would be goofy, if you don't make it so clean cut so to speak and perfectly around the model then it could work, stagger it maybe with litle towers and such, or make it curve downward as a way off the model?
the Wyvern is crazy cool
I like the version you chose for the wings, its more dramatic, really digging it.
I would do a saddle, something with a fence would be nice, maybe a little bin in the back to stock up on battlefield trophies. Do you know what rider you will be using?

I actually added some curvature to his toe nails on foot in air, and it seemed to make him look a bit more trampling... but Eh.. really actually not liking way his foot in air is looking ... may lob his toes off and start over!
Yes I had to insert a brass rod into rocks under his belly to help support model because was afraid the weight of it would cause a fracture in the lone leg on ground if it got hit hard enough/dropped
I wasn't crazy about it, but concessions had to be made... next one will hopefully make me ashamed of this one!
I think that making the pathway around top spotty in areas is a very good way to break up the continuous lines that may deceive people into thinking hes wearing a hat?
Thank you for the compliments, I really appreciate them.
I am happy I put the wings where I did, mainly because I was gonna be annoyed to sculpt that CUTE LIL FACE, then cover it up with some fugly undead wing from GW jokes jokes
I am planning on putting a goblin up on top of it. possibly one in the picture with the dracula pose. the BFSP warboss with the squig in his hand? It will play as a orc warboss on wyvern... I had considered making me a savage looking goblin shaman... if i wanted a savage orc shaman on wyvern.. going to magnetize rider so can remove him easily. will probably also use this wyvern as a vargulf in my undead goblin army so don't want him to have a rider then
which leads me to probably sticking with chains/reigns/ropes etc... really wanna do the fence... maybe still will... idk!
Have to finish up some mycetic spore comissions before I probably get to work on wyvern or spider-squig #2. Have 8 spores to make!
back onto the rider... I have some old night goblins with whips that are to be mounted on something or another, from the late 80's.. could modify one but so old looking not what i want my boss to look like ya know??
I will try and get some shots of undead gobbos this weekend. haven't messed with em in a while now. they are all still WIP but ya know! could do an army shot at least!
Thanks BG. I have managed to get 3 night goblin chariots built this week. working on churning out unit fillers right now... have a 5000 point game coming up and I don't have enough goblins! lol
I also need to make FIVE colossal squigs for this scenario... I may sell these off as I seriously doubt I will freaking need that many. heh who knows.
I think I may post up a picture of the 5000 ... it takes up like 60" x 12" of bookshelf I think? lol... and thats without the 5 collosal squigs! Hopefully can get some updates soon. Been really busy working on other peoples 40k ork commisions and tyranid mycetic spore sculpts. realized I dropped off like 4 of the spores without even taking a photo of them >.< lol
Been slackin, here's some updates. Will try and get pics of army, up to about 12k of night goblin bases stuff. Mwahahaha
For now here is the second squig narok. I like it alot better than first: have 4 more skinned like him in different poses already. Will do something similar for colossal squigs
Worried over time he may bend over. Used a cost hanger super glued into a snug hole with green stuff around it then milliput leg on... Wire was hot glued into a styrofoam ball..
Magnetized howda so gonna remove it for over night just in case, migh build a little cottage he's stepping on to support him?
Just paranoid. The ones that don't have how dad (collosal swuigs) won't e near as wavy. They were fine with weight of putty just not all that framing/models.. Gotta finish his foot and eyebrows /mouth still any who
Finished wyvvern, need to paint it,, used games day Orc warboss as rider and build up a oil derick lookig thing leadin up to a picket fence crowd
Nest for a goblin boss to ride, the Orc,
While the Orc rides the squigvern.
Also made a mushroom cloud miscast unit killer and need to finish it up. Also did a floating island above a witches cauldron with an energy field type of magical jail cell around a chaos dwarf lord and a fanatic sneakkn up on em. Figured would work well in tamurkhan campaign
My pics are always sideways, so will get new ones to post
Squigs are the cheese man, I love them. You're doing a great job so far on everything as well, keep it up. I've also started work on a big ass squig in my blog,it's a counts as megadread
so time for a major update here we go, pardon all the pictures but I really hoped they may be beneficial to those on the fence about sculpting. I was really hesitant to start because of perceived difficulties, and I'm just a dumb guy from oklahoma, and if I can do this, I'm sure you can 1 up me!
first squignarok #2 with howda removed still needs bulking out of leg in air, and claws/teeth then done. i bulked out bottom leg and gave him bigger eyebrows over his eyelids
count as giants
they are a bout a half inch short of proper giant height but will be correct once I add some night goblins riding them. Need to come up with suitably giant things for them to be doing. One I am trying to make look like hes jumping up and down, 1 running, and the other I was going to attach a fanatic style ball and chain to his ankle on ground like those old toys kids had? you like jumped rope and it counted it, it was like a foot-hoola hoop or something? anyway, one of those + a fanatic ball and chain is what this will guy for his club thumps
start of a squig breaking up to the surface to eat some goblins from the caves below
just a unit filler (25 models worth!)
here is another unit filler, this one is a floating island suspended by the magic brewing in a cauldron below. need to give it goblins on perimeter, and a shaman casting something too. The fumes are intended to have formed a magical "cage" keeping the chaos dwarf lord imprisoned. I will probably add a shaman with a hand shaped spell effect "hand of gorking" the fanatic into the cell with his unsuspecting victim
I only actually made this because I "captured" this lord in the last game vs. my friends chaos dwarves. He had capability of capturing an old OOP squig if he won the game. I felt this was a suitable use of his model.
yet another unit filler (12,000 points of squig cult guys, i have 610 bodies to paint, don't bust my marbles for using filler)
this one is a horrible miscast
sculpt is still rough, needs more bump clouds and jut outs, maybe bits of goblin flying out here and there?
i was going to paint it in yellow/orange/with black on outside like a realistic explosion, but a friend suggested to do it in greens/purples/blues all mystical looking? need ideas on how to achieve this
here is my general orc warboss ona wyvern
he is magnetized to the saddle, when i put him on a 25mm base he just is perched up on a stack of rocks.. but need to weight base as the leaning tower of goblin causes constant fall overs.
wings are from crypt horror box, orc is gamesday 07 i think, and goblin is avatars of war
i made squignarok #1 receive some new lips and tail, and cleaned up some of the connections at his ankles
call this guy squignarok #3
he will get a long tail I'm thinking
mangler squig
still WIP obviously
squig narok #4
he is having his leg broken by a fanatic that will be removable from his base in event i need extra fanatic
had a shot of his face, but was sideways
also had photos of squig narok #5, but sideways again. not alot to see on him fortunately
anywho, I intend to do 6 squignaroks, and 12 collosal squigs.. so need to order me some more arack bases its looking like... I might need more than 12 collossal, might call it 14.. Lord.
still need to photo my squig chariots for army update, and build 3 more. Not to mention need another rock lobba, and 7 pump wagons/1 more giant...
2500 army shot, with close ups of arack 1 blocked in pre wash/needs alot still, wyvern at 60-70% done, and FW squig gobba behind that. Spots on big mushrooms are roughly painted as I haven't tidied crap up. Most was done yesterday. Also worked on pump wagon in foreground and FW shaman in one of those blocks
Can I see more of that blue guy please? He looks awesome.
Love the update, was happy to see you've still been working. Everything is coming out wonderfully, love the red for the squig-dragon, and the gamesday (i think it is 07, i have same model) is perfect for that character.
I personally love unit fillers, the ones you are making are really really cool!
I'd go blues and greens for explosion, unsure exactly how to do it, i'd treat it like real explosion but use greens at center, and blues on edges.

Thanks alot! sure! i'll get some more photos after work this evening if I can. The woman is going out of town for business with her dad next week so will probably hit it hard then!
I love the gamesday boss, and though he suited the dragon well. Now I need another warboss is problem, on foot, to lead the army. I can dismount the one from wyvern and he has a little rock on a 25mm base to chill out on when his mount dies, but.. no clue what orc model to use. Gonna dig through my orc stuff and see what I can come up with.
Again, thank you! I think unit fillers are a great and often overlooked opportunity to save $$$, time, and bring a lot of character to your army. Win all around! I have many more I want to do, seeing as I'm hoping to get 12,000 points of my squig cult painted before too long.... I'm nuts! I know. my hands hurt just thinking about it... I figure unit fillers will save me a tremendous amount of time and money, and I doubt people will fault me for using them seeing as I have like 700 goblins in my core alone... and if they do, they can play with somebody else, because I don't give 2
yeah i'm thinking blue and green and purple now? i did the spell effects on fw shaman blue and then glazed it, and it looked great, and hit it with a purple wash while glaze still wet which detracted from its look a bit I think, so going to revisit it.
got a great idea for 2nd pump wagon, going to make front of it look like a shark, similiar to my warboss biker/nob biker on previous pages, but have the jaw of shark (which composes front of ship) "pump" open and close, to gobble up prey. Maybe have a cage "belly" inside the ship full of childrens or something?
I was reading some of tamurkhan and saw stories of how much night goblins like stealing children.. So wanted to model that somehow, and need to find some models for childrens too if anyone knows of any
thought of also setting up a fake "fun house" type of wall prop like the houses in blazing saddles is what popped in my head, but any stage scenery ya know.. and having a set of stairs kids being led up that goes to a door that falls into a giant squigs mouth? or a cage or something)
could have the goblin "crew" out front dressed up poorly trying to herd the kids that way?
thought of even just doing "SAFE THIS WAY ----->" pointing to door, and having goblins chasing/herding kids into that faux "safe house" which leads to a cleverly disguised giant squigs?
figured base the thing on an arack base and count it as one, seems proper.. squig hiding in a fake building or whatever, right?
yeah..700gobbos is a lot...I don't see why anyone would mind the use of rank fillers. I agree with you, they save money, and look cool so win win.
I really like the idea of a fun house lol, that seems like a very interesting and funny model to make that would prob be lot of fun. Maybe make it candy house haha, they have to make sure the squig doesn't eat it.
Another idea that came into my head would be to have a squig herd unit where instead of squigs you have children with a piper guy/gobbo in front leading them astray.

Thanks a lot sage! You'd be surprised at the attitudes some people have about fillers. drives me bonkers. if i had money for a rolls royce, i wouldn't cheap out on my toy soldiers (hell even then I probably still would. I'm really cheap), but seeing as I'm not that well off, I'd rather save for a rainy day than spend a bunch of extra money to appease some potential opponent.
I like the idea of the piper! hehe might have to make a big unit filler with a goblin with bag pipes leading a trail of squigs astray!
the house being made of candy made me lol pretty good. got a visual of a gingerbread house with a big ass bite taken out of it. I had planned on doing some mushroom fillers that had big bites taken out of them, but hadn't thought of applying that to the house!
Mangler Squig Sculpt #1 complete (well this wasn't the first one I started, I have several half finished ones, before picking this one out to finish first as he was my favorite.
what do you guys think? goblin boss there for scale
been painting a lot lately, got the arack with the dwarf on a fishing pole started, half blocked in most colors on 100 or so goblins, as well as done the blending on skin on about 35, starting to do robe highlights now, but getting bored so primed the mangler white last night and may paint on him some to do something new.
Thanks alot fellas! Appreciate the compliments! My buddy sent me a text with a really similar picture dirty dog! Lol. Toss up between trying my hand at reptilian eyes, or maybe shark eyes?
Took a pic of my 10k list for upcoming game so I can visually see where I'm at on progress cause only a couple weeks left!
18k per side. In pic only 15k. A friend showed up who also plays night goblins and we invited him to join us as the warriors player had enough to cover the 3000 the fellow goblin had.
In reserves I had a 50/20 herd 4 managers 5 wagons, and 10 free collossal squigs per the scenario rules. All reserve stuff was outflanking.
1 arack. My allies had a couple Vlocks of 30 orcs, 2 aracks, and some spider riders. The NG player didn't get into game late so entered on reserves with those units
Was a great time. We lost by a margin of 12%! Was a blast. Makes me want to get everything all finished
Thunderfrog wrote: That was a pretty epic game. You and Rob should have done a Batrep.
My favorite part was all the Colossals chargings the Chaos Dwarf artillery line.
Post more Sky!
those colossal squigs were the biggest let down! lol just died left and right to those chaos attacks!
artillery was by far the MVP, well.. maybe the 31 fanatics actually!
I don't know what I was thinking when looking back at deployment, I probably shouldn't of had a pre game beer. lol
Playing the game was a feat in of itself. I cannot image a batrep lol. Maybe next time an observer will want to cause we didn't even get to finish game in time because theres just so damn much to do! lol
I have been working hard on getting everyone's gak done for slobberknocker so I can finish my own stuff! Been finiging my list a lot. Want to be competitive for the tourney but actually have fun, and gun lines are nooooo fun to play for me :(
Hopefully I will get to posting some pics of what I have been working on lately. Real life is kicking the gak out of me so I haven't been logging the progress of my army very much.
Hoping to go to the gamestore tomorrow for a bit and play a couple games with the current incarnation of my list and see how it fares. If you are around, feel free to put a boot in my ass and make me go home crying!
They aren't very scary to gobbos I don't think! That said, I think one of us is supposed to play with that guy from Kansas.
Well my gobbos had a minor loss vs Quato last week when I had my big monsters ( before be added spawns and prince)... And saw how bad that went a few times.. Maybe ill be a better match up.
The guy from Kansas said he may have wife aggro so not sure if he's coming up or not
some works in progress. Pump wagons! have a 3rd not pictured that isn't as far along. One or two of them will have magnetized muzzles covering their mouths (where you can see teeth still) probably made to look like they are made of wood scraps nailed together, with chains that wrap around back of squig. Purpose being I can't afford spiky roller upgrades on all of the squigs. So I figure a muzzle was a good way to indicate the wagons are only STR4 and not STR5 like a normal squig.
buddy at the game store liked my squig unit filler and commissioned me to make this and a couple of GW-style manglers on 40mm bases to go with it that I still need to take pics of
It's really cool to see all those models in one game! How long did it take to play??
On unit fillers, I always thought it breaks away from the dullness of some of the units. I don't really have any since I tend to start new armies before i finished my first XD but I've always loved them when see others with them. They can be really creative stuff.
My brother just started playing and has a sizable lizardman force so i might just have to retake up fantasy and start an army again, seeing all your models does inspire me.
We played for oh say, goddamn 8 hours or more? and only got to turn 3 maybe 4 if I recall.
Highlights were, dragonogre things womping 10 colossal squigs (lord are those things terrible in game) along with some chaos knights, me rolling a direct hit like 18/24 times over 3 turns making my artillery pick up a ton of points from all those juicy demon princes and the like
I know how you feel about starting up something new before finishing what you started... I started 40k orks at beginning of this blog ... never finished them.. moved onto night goblins, got distracted and half made tournament size armies of night goblin themed tomb kings and vampire counts.. and now back to trying to finish my tournament models for night goblins. sheesh. too dang much hobby ADD
I'm glad to be an inspiration! Thanks again. I think unit fillers can really break up monotony of some blocks. Only time it gets confusing is when you have skaven pushing a bell or something like that, and 5 other units with unit fillers that look like bells... uhh which block is the real bell again?? but thats pretty easily avoidable.
there has been loads done! havent had time to update the blog much. hoping to have my 2500 painted in the next month or so. didn't get quite all painted for the slobberknocker 2014 GT. I got my butt stomped but had a blast. Highlights include netting myself while S1 from hexes in game 1, killing all 50 goblins leaving my general to be cut down by 25 chaos warriors. Failing animosity on squig horde, dealing hits out to a smaller squig-dart, blowing it up 11" nearly killing all my chariots and pump wagons.. Netting and killing a block of bret knights after hexing them with wiz hat. Lost all my spells via glean magic, minus sneaky stabbin.. Nearly got a draw against skaven but left bell and plague furnace driver-less but with 1 wound left each. Whole squig horde into flank of a hellpit flubbed attacks 2 rounds in a row leaving it 1 wound left allowing them to be flanked instead of reforming, breaking my steadfast and sealing my fate that game! Made a ton of bad calls, felt my list and stuff wasn't the biggest problem. Shoulda had my wheaties! hehe. Revising my list, and working on getting painted and hopefully I can convince some buds to get tickets to bugeater in nebraska here in a couple months.
Anyhow I nearly got these 2 units of goblins complete. The squigs aren't far behind, and the manglers are complete. I don't like the eyes on the manglers, but looking for 3 color right now, and once I get there, iill go back and revisit the bad bad bad eyes i have now. The unit fillers on the NG and squig units are all that are lacking as of now. the bullseyes just need pinks and flock/snow
group shot
50 ng/40 ng/ 2 manglers / ng warboss on squig/ ng warboss on foot
50 NG unit, reformed into a more photogenic horde IMHO
40 NG
manglers
squig horde
Got some paint on the squig-pump wagons, and squig-gobba but didn't get pics. hopefully will get some stuff done soon!
I'm with you on the painting, Sasa0mg… but I already started my squib cult.
This cult is looking great. I love the skittle squibs. I like varying colors much better than having a big block of red bouncing around the table. Those giant squibs are cool. It looks like they are photo bombing the pic.
From the depths and back, I HAVE RETURNED! Seriously though, real life!!! Come on!! I have serious business planned with my little toys!

Oh my lord. I have been playing these guys a year and still workin on getting my 2500 painted up.. Hoping I can ride the momentum and shoot past 2500 painted to 3000-3500 painted because I'd love to have 10k of my squig cult painted up!

C'mon make man withe the more updates on the cult!! I have been checkin out all the other NG blogs I can for inspiration!! Brothers need inspiration to keep on keepin on! Thanks for the compliment! i like tje multicolor look muself! Made me chuckle about the photo bombing! Gonna have to hold these guys out of frame and let them photobomb stuff from now on.

Thanks monkey, hoping to update more regularly now that real life
is getting a little less crazy.
Will update again this evening I hope with some updated photos on unit fillers and pump wagons!
decided to post this from a different thread to keep some stuff all together. my bad if you ended up reading it twice. Been super busy working on these commissions lately along with preparing to move! blah!
Hi guys. I have recently been working on a large tree spirit army for a friend excited for the wood elf book coming out. I don't know why I haven't been taking as many pictures of them but I need to get on that. Anyhow, after getting 2 tree men 90% complete, and the last one 70% complete I wanted to work on one for myself for casting. I had also been doing 12 tree-kin for him as well, but again, no pics :/
So anyways, here is this fella. I was kinda going for a spooky/haunted tree look. He is made in several pieces. Legs/2 arms/torso/1 side attaching branch/3 top attaching branches. I was hoping to make a cast copy of him, and add more personalized details.. So I could for instance have a version with fungus/mushrooms growing on him, another that has spider web patterns here and there, maybe a crow or something, maybe a pumpkin vine wrapped around foot.
I need to make a second set of arms and legs. Probably a version standing with slightly bent legs, and a squatting about to jump at you pose. I would like to do an arm set of him also reaching out towards the sky, thought about doin a set of arms in which he was potentially flipping the bird like Kev Adams old night goblin as well?
Early WIP shot before branches were done, or top/bottom of torso complete (including hip joint)
Finished shots
Gonna try and yellow-tack him together a little better tonight and photograph him in better conditions. Sorry for the quality in those.
When it comes to casting this guy up. I need to ensure he isn't too heavy as to warp his lone leg on the ground. I figure I could use a more dense resin/higher strength or whatever for that piece, and make the others of a lighter weight resin? I am about to begin researching this stuff so if anyone can point me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it!
Pose? detailing? design of the actual leg shape? all of the above hehe? I ask because I want a few sets of legs to go with him, as well as arms and variant branches so people could buy a couple and do them up differently. I don't want the other legs to have the problem that these do. I had the thought of roots bound together in the shape of legs, or that had more or less twisted into two leg shapes that he was strutting around on. Do you think that would be a better direction as far as humanoid legs go?
As far as the tangle of roots flailing about, I love that idea. I will have to do an alternate leg set like that. Probably have a could of extra roots you glue on to the root tangle to make it more dynamic and customizable. I think that with a very minimal amount of green stuff work someone could change the smile on this bastard if they wanted to make him look much more different than the other, and even add a flailing body entangled to the roots etc. A goblin skulker all tied up at the waist being held up to the tree man's face, vainly attempting to strike the beast from too far away, but too dumb to cut the root holding his waist... I don't know, or something.
This was made using some spare bits that were too bubbly to sell. Don't mind it so bad for myself!

quick and dirty paint job from last night, need to finish base and do some more highlighting. Going to change glow to not hit hands as it looks like crap, and change it from green to blue I think. Possibly red orange. if I do red orange I will make foliage on top green, and if I do blue eyes I'll do orange/red/yellow foliage
made up about 6 of these guys last night, well shy a few branches I was too lazy to do. 2 sets came out with minimal bubbles, and other 4 sets are not bad but the 2 sets out shine them. continuing method of high slow pour vs. injection (with large resevoirs cut out to funnel it in) and burping/tapping on table until I get something to vibrate molds.
From the front, the legs and torso look a little slapdash, like a play-dough sculpture? If it were a smooth transition, much like the back appears to be, I think I would like him much more.
Thank you vik! I wish they wouldn't have released AOS as it really has killed my interest in my squig army. I suppose I can still finish it and play 8th but eventually the well of opponents is going to dry up I think. Most of the local fantasy scene, if not it completely crumbled with release of AOS, people selling armies etc, no more tourneys being run. Guys up in Wichita, Kansas still doing 8th ones but is a decent drive for me.
All that has had me mainly doing Super dungeon explore stuff lately. I think a buddy wants to commission me to make him a mad max themed ork army sometime soon. So that may be in the pipes soon
The crystal caverns here I tried to make pretty bright and cheerful like you said. They had released some crystal cavern tiles that had similar colors going on and I based my paint scheme off it. I stole the translucent crystal idea from Glenn's second foam dungeon over on sodapop mini boards.
Hopefully do a hirst one sometime soon after I paint this huge pile of chibi minis from sodapop, impact miniatures, and velvet mark miniatures.
Yeah I'm working on painting up existing stuff I have before I throw down $ on guest as I imagine I'll order like 10 molds at once.
Haven't tried AOS, will have to someday I suppose. Haven't even played 40k since shortly after 6th was released .
Decided to finish some projects though so trying to get my 2k of freebooters full converted and painted.
I had assembled this wagon stock a couple years back and out the columns in bed to support the ship. Last night broke it out and came up with this thus far
Haha right??! I was getting a muppet/sideshow bob vibe!
Once I sculpted the mouth and it was set up some but elastic enough I could move it around still, I started playing with the mouth positioning I gave him. He looked like Freddy Kruger/scary terry.
Also reminded me of beetle juice in snake form?? Haha
Anyhow some pics of progress. I was having problems rounding out the cheek I started with mouth wet still so will work on checks and ears tonight, along with finish hair. Maybe shorten his leg.
Some custom Chibis I'm workin on! Old Rick is probably going to get sold off or given away as I'm working on v2.0 for a commission and don't like v1 anymore!
Jack skellington, no frills or lapes or stuff yet.
Horrible pic.
Sword kirby! Has a magnet in his head/hand to swap some weapons and hats depending on who he absorbs! Plan on modifying sucfubus rules for him dropping first action and giving him some sort of absorb ability
Star wand kirby!
Kirby and assorted stuff so far! He has a big wooden hammer in background of some picture also.
Trogdor!! & strongbad

Will post it up to copy if anyone wants to print them for their own use.
So its been a while, i'm alive and kicking. Real life yknow? anywho back to biz.
for a long time I quit playing 40k, and focused on WHFB 8th edition until AOS dropped then.. Yeah..... I haven't tried AOS yet. Maybe some day. I have played a couple of games of 7th ed 40k and it seems fun though, hopefully 8th is as well.
Couple photos from last nights 7th ed 40k game, maelstrom mission 2, ended on end of T4 with only chaos big giant paladin lookin thing, and a termi-warlord guy alive on chaos side vs 2 gunwagons, 8 lootas, warlord mek, 2 gits, pk nob from boyz squad 1, 8/10 str boyz squad 2 including pk nob alive left on the ork side. Most of which were camped on obj or about to be hiding out of LOS of the big guy. He may have been able to pull off a draw or win if we would of continued on and he got right objective card thingies.
I castled in the corner trying to only show front armor to the big guns, but accidentaly misdeployed and showed side armor to titan and he exploded the BW killing 1 git on turn 1. ouch.
I know the ships aren't done but, can you imagine them in their glory?! I have considered making the decks plates/planks out of 30 or 60 mill thick magnetic sheeting like people use to magnetize fantasy armies? I wonder how well it takes paint and stuff? anyone have any experience? would be neat i think. I really want to make the ships be able to physically carry all the models that go inside.
I've been playing Arcadia Quest a lot, if you aren't familiar with it look it up, its a really fun competitive game for 4 players. You can houserule stuff to make it work for more people though, we are playing a 6 player campaign at the moment. Here are some of the figs I have been working on. These are just basic tabletop quality done as quick as i could, will go back and highlight stuff when I have time but I wanted to get the set done to play with as the game has been getting played on a weekly basis.
My dad got me a paasch airbrush from hobby lobby a couple years back <3 dad, and I was so hesitant to use it, and mess it up. I planned on watching videos and blah blah blah.. Then one day I got drunk and was like " " and just got it out, thinned my crappy apple barrel paint and airbrushed like 40 minis in 15 minutes getting a bunch of rivet wars allies based palm leaf green, and doing all the Caucasian flesh on the AQ heroes (then washing with reikland and highlighting with airbrush again).
Some SDE minis (and a custom finn and jake that i sculpted)
quick and dirty paladin from sde, started him like 4 years ago jesus
gunter close up
adventure time guys + master splinter i sculpted
can see some SDE dragons in background/spawn points/hirst chests
Downloaded sculptris 4 or 5 days ago, I had downloaded it on an ipad or something like 3-4 years ago, played with it a day and forgot about it. got it for pc this time and did this over 2 hours or so during my lunch break at work/after work. Its not gonna be usable for 3d printing i bet, but in future i know now how to make the arms and head diff objects and stuff to make it print better and posable. need to figure out rigging in another program. model looks alot dif now but forgot to take new pix. ssculptris is very intuitive for people who have sculpted by hand, gotta say. super neat
finished the rick and morty commission
Friend of mine painted up the trees i sculpted for him a few years ago
there are more, will have to find pix
start of new landships!!!! gunwagons? battlewagons? looted wagons? who knows. again, thinkng of using magnetic sheeting 30mil or 60 mill think for the planks or deck plates on these to hold fellars on??
got a bit done on these since these were taken, the battle pix up top have more work done on them (including treads complete on one)
begininings of magentized rivet wars board
shamelessly copying guy from combatzonescenery.co.uk or something like that. great friggin work this guy does.
The black stuff is 60 mil Magnetic sheeting that people use for fantasy modes/unit trays. I've made one sponson with removable big shoota boy and in process of others. Deck of ship all mageized so can remove sail if needed plus hold the boys on the boat while I move around board.
Need to
finish making port holes with rokkits and shootas for sides of the hull up top, a kannon and kill kannon for the decks and rivets rivers rivets. Lots of welds to sculpt. Hopefully make some progress today
Make ladders planks wreckin ball and klaw and magnetize them. Same for rolla and ram then gonna finish up bits ok the sail and hopefully get it painted tomorrow if I can
Thanks a lot bud. Appreciate the attaboys, c&c etc you always drop by with. hopefully can get this stuff finished soon and make an appearance to lose in style like:
Here are a couple photo examples of the airbrushed skin i finished last night. Got my entire army done aside from 10 flash git and a biker big mek (probably not be a legal unit by time in done with him ugh)
