You may have already seen some of Nuke Art's work floating around here on Dakka Dakka: we are happy to say we will be updating this thread regularly so you will always know where to find us!
So who are Nuke Arts?
Nuke Arts is a team of professional miniature painters, sculptors and artists working together to produce awesome miniature and scale models We are always open for commission and we paint anything from 25mm Sci-fi / Fantasy miniatures to scale models.
What to expect from this plog?
We aim to fill this plog with both completed and WIP commissions, we love to hear feedback, and where possible will answer any questions about the miniatures or the commission process. I aim to update this plog at least 3 times a week once with each:
A Nuke Classic: a completed work that either hasn't been shared on here, or is in an old thread people have missed.
A Nuke WIP: what's happening in the studio.
A hot project coming in: for example at the minute there's alot of excitement for Dark Vengeance, expect to see some DV goodness here soon!
Here at Nuke we paint anything! So Hopefully there will be something to wet every bodie's hobby appetites!
Who's writing this?
Just so you guys know, my name's Jamie. I am in regular contact with the Nuke Studio and I am very lucky to get the chance to share their work with the community here on Dakka Dakka. I will answer any gaming related questions as I am a wargaming enthusiast, I will also direct questions to the team at Nuke Arts and will get back to you ASAP Or feel free to email me at ukrep@nukearts.co.uk.
Hurry up and get to the minis......
Without further ado I give you a series of characters painted in 2011, please sub and leave comments!
Not WIP like I said guys, but this just had to be shared!
Here at Nuke Arts we accept all commissions small or large, army or display! This here's a terminator painted up for display from the Space Hulk Set. Very heroic!
His work is even more amazing in real life than it is In these photos... I've seen them and It makes me want models for armies I don't even want or play...
As you know from my above post, the studio has been cranking out necrons... as I posted these in the showcase board it means we have no current projects to show here!
Do not fear though, I have a nuke classic....an ork battle wagon, weathered appropriately!
I'm off to sunny wales tomorrow so don't expect an update for a while, but when I come back there's some Space Pups and Grey Knights!
Hey guys! Back off hols with some non GW eye candy to share! We've been seeing some increased interest in Infinity the game which can only be a good thing as the game and minis are amazing! Check the showcase for a full detailed description: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/476551.page#4771428
Hey guys!
Nuke is going on hols next week, but I've been told to expect some BIG updates when he gets back so keep watching!
An army that has been popular since the foundation of the studio, and continues to be so is Grey Knights. So why not check out this vid of a great army finished recently.... very cinematic!
In a similar vein to blue glowy effects I present a Blood Angels commission again from 2011 (trying to keep posting stuff while I wait for updates from the studio! )
Nukes on holiday atm, but he's left me with a ton of pics to share. The next few are completed but unofficial pics, the last one is an epic conversion (can you spot how we've took a Draigo and made it better?)
Check back later in the week, I have a few awesome pics to share that show just HOW busy Nuke Studios is atm; which is only a good thing as it means we can continue to push ourselves to keep our standards high and our brushes wet!
Sorry for the lack of updates lately guys; I can now say though that Nuke is back on the 10th. And I will be posting to him an Angron, as well as my own personal Pre Heresy Emperor's Children. So watch this space!
We will be painting up a pretty awesome display standard Typhus, with display base to be used in both the game and to later be auctioned off for charity.
Both these events have taken alot of organizing by Geordie09, so please go check them out!
In the mean time we have a pretty awesome DV interrogator chaplain to show off.......
Hey Gabriel! I'm not sure if we're allowed to place prices on here and we don't want to break the rules of such a great forum as this!
However, be sure to get in touch via facebook. I can assure you our prices are some of the most competitive out there and we have a standard for every one's pockets!
These are awesome, can I ask you to possibly add some pictures with prices next to them so we can have a rough idea of what they cost and thus what it would cost for us to commission pieces?

Thanks guys, subscribed
Hey there! I am unsure whether this would break Dakka's T +C!
What I can recommend you to do however is to go to our facebook page: some where within the images is a break down of what our three mainstream quality levels are, how they are different and also how much they cost!
Sorry about that! Dakka Dakka are kind enough to let us post here, so we wouldn't want to offend. But also feel free to message via facebook and we can give you a quick run down of the prices, we don't bite and there is no obligation what so ever!
Thanks everyone for the kind words, and now to go along with the wolfie images we have:
Every one who's subbed: thank you very much! It means alot, and please me sure to check back with comments regularaly we love to hear what you think!
What I have found for those interested in commissions is a youtube vid that highlights our three main levels. We do have a display quality which we determine on a client basis depending on requirements!
Massive update guys! Last one for the night as well. Seeing as the Space Wolves proved such a success on here, I have some (unofficial) images of other Wolves the studio is pumping out, as usual there will be official images as well as perhaps a little summary video. Enjoy!
Some unofficial pics of Daemony goodness! Official pics will soon follow!
Some good news for those asking about prices, feel free to email me at: ukrep@nukearts.co.uk, I can send a break down list of prices, offers, etc. No obligation!
Gabrial Seth wrote: Rockin job man, love everything you guys put out, if i wasn't in the states i would order a commission from you. Maybe next year
Thanks alot! Definitely keep us in mind, we've had US clients before and are happy to again! You can get in touch with me in the UK from the email on the first page, or go straight to the studio in Thailand via the email on the images!
Be sure to comment on our pics in the future, helps keep the morale up!
The studio is super busy atm! So much so the Nuke Team is growing (again!) So we'd like to say a big thank you to any one whose given us support, comments, exposure and business!
We just want to give a shout out to our friends out there at voxnet radio!
geordie09 wrote: I love Lysander from the opening post... as well as everything else, but being an Imperial Fist player that has grabbed a special place in my heart!
great painting, great OSL and great stuff!
Thank's alot Geordie09! We aim to please, and really appreciate you coming and posting a comment!
Two of the main techniques we use here at Nuke Arts studios is weathering and washing, this image is before this has taken place. So stay tuned for the final product (We thought it would be cool to show a before and after!)
Any one know if there's a problem with Image Shack atm? All my links seem to have broken suddenly, despite working for days!
Edit: Problem seems to have fixed itself! One of the things we get asked alot here at Nuke Arts is how we take our pictures, in the best possible way to show off our work. Soon we will put up a tutorial to show you guys!
Don't be shy guys, we're getting hundreds of new views but no comments!

Thank you!
Using thinned down glazes over the area you want the glow to appear would also work, as a glaze slightly tints the colour of the area it applies. However, I do not know whether this would look as good or be as easy to do: an airbrush glow effect is a pretty simple technique!

Ah I asked 'cuz I've got no access to an airbrush and don't have the money to get one any time soon. I'll try the glaze technique, thanks!

Hey no worries! Not every one has access to an airbrush, but it doesn't mean you can't have super cool glows. If you have a gw near you I recommend going there: one I was in recently had a staff member showing how to use the new glazes to do a cool glow effect. Good luck and let me know how it works out!
Hey guys!
Every now and again the owner, Nuke as we call him, likes to share a great lil tip on the facebook page. Thought I'd share today's with you, (mainly because I was playing against a friends nicely painted Necrons today an the tip covers Necrons!)
"Here's some quick ideas on how you can spice up your necron army:
1. Keep the glow low, and detail high. Necrons are full of crevises and engravings, make sure you shade these or make them glow.
2. It also helps to visualize the materials before you paint - which part is made of what type of material... This way you can retain the consistency when applying your color scheme to different units like flyer, triach stalker, barges and etc
3. Add weatheing. Rust and grime are the basic ideas. If you feel like adding more, well, try dust or chipping. Stay tuned for more articles on these techniques.
Just a quick note:
Rust - use pigment or dark flesh+orange wash around the joints
Grime - devland mud, all the way. Or whatever GW replaced that with.
Chipping - check out my channel for an old sponge chipping tutorial... Time to make a new one soon really...
Dust - wash with graveyard earth around the legs / joints
4. Basing: I love contrasting the base's color to the model's. But sometimes when you want to emphasize on a specific color, go for it. Dull other colors so your dominant color can glow and attract as much attention you want it to without being distracted by oter colors. For example, if you wanna show off your glow, then try not to have more than one or two super bright colors on the same model, or the glow will lose its effect. "
Here's an old one (old links in the showcase thread are broken now :()
This is my personal favorite mini to ever come out of Nuke Arts!
I'd like to remind people if you are based in the UK, you can get in touch with me personally for quote/pricing information, with no obligations at: Ukrep@nukearts.co.uk

Thanks for the positive feedback mate!
I'm the guy who answers emails in the uk, and blogs for the team. I wish I could paint that well!
However, the owner Nuke did not do art at University, some of the studio team did. We have people from all sorts of backgrounds here!
However during training and staff meeting, Nuke does teach about non-model related art theories, and styles: color theories, subtly, color meanings and connotations, etc, etc. We at nuke arts feel it really helps with the hobby, and are always looking for more and more to learn
In the upcoming weeks we have a pretty special project coming up on here: my own personal Pre Heresy Emperor's Children army. The Nuke team will take it from a pretty broken up, uninspiring paint job to a fully painted Nuke master piece! I will update with WIPS, this will hopefully show one of the services we offer at Nuke painting which is stripping (of paint) in order to turn an army into one clients are happy with!
If any body comes down to the Penkridge Wargames Show they will be able to see the army in the flesh (resin?), as well as some rather nice infinity, and level samples. Perhaps a Daemon Prince or two for sale. And I will be able to give out quotes and answer queries! It's free entry so I definitely recommend it, even if just to come keep the Nuke Arts Stand from looking lonely
Again I'd like to remind people of the animosity events I linked previously, as this is another chance to see Nuke Art's work in the flesh, as well as playing some awesome narrative 40k.
Also check out: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/483676.page This in my opinion is one of the greatest ideas for a 40k event out there, have some fun and help out charity! Nuke Arts will be painting up an awesome Typhus for the gaming/auction as well, profits going to charity!
Finally any queries, hit me up at Ukrep@nukearts.co.uk

We had a few requests on facebook for a photography tutorial, we wanted to make it as accessible as possible for people. So we used the humble smart phone. We like to pose WIPs taken from Nukes iphone to the facebook, on here and directly to the client so they are always up to date with what's going on! We use a multitulde of media to do this: live, facebook chat, email, whats app? what ever the client wants!
Anyways on to the article, from the keyboard of Nuke:
NUKE PAINTING TIP: Photograph your miniatures with a phone camera (for hobbyists)
Smartphones today come with pretty good built-in camera. I use an iphone to take snapshots of my WIP Because
- tons of photo cropping / text adding and color balancing apps available
- instantly uploaded, no need to hassle with an SD card or transferring the photos to your conputer first
- at 3mega pixel (iphone 3Gs) you can get a decent photo especially when viewed on facebook
Yes yes, the resolution isnt everything, but im just showing it here. By all means, we own a Canon D50 at the studio and its what we use to film / photograph our completed work.
Yes, the quality of the photos arent amazing and you probably wont want to use it to present your 'finishes / official' work. But if your not a pro-painter and not sure what camera to buy.... IMHO get a smartphone!
Now, for those who already own one, heres what you can do to improve your smartphone miniature photography. This is pretty similar to conventional photography, so i will put it in a layman's term and just point out exactly what to do
1. Light: make sure you have enough light. I use 1-2 warm daylight with high wattage output.
2. Shadow diffusion: With light comes shadow. Strong lightsource means more detail on your minis will show, but also strong shadow (and extreme brightness)
You can soften this by building your own soft box. Its easy - get a large empty box, cut holes on the top and the sides and tape some handtowels on them = done. If you wanna see a tutorial for this let me know - i used a homemade softbox even when i started painting as a job.
3. Focus - now, most smartphone comes with the autofocus (and auto balance) feature. For iphones you just tap on the screen - do make sure your miniature is in focus before taking the shot. You can adjust the distance between your phone / mini to get more detail. The closet, the harder to focus. So i place my phone around 6-7 inches away at least, and zoom in. This way, i can even get tiny details like eyes / facial expression with my meager iphone 3gs 3megapixel cam
4. Background. In most my progress pictures, you will see that theres a fuzzy grey background (sometimes discolored), thats the filter of my spray booth.
Anything uniform will work. I prefer grey. White bg will trick your smartphone into thinking that your mini is too dark, so the autobalance feature will bring down the brighness, resulting in a darker photo. Black bg will do the opposite.
You can easily download background pics from the net and print them out. Or use your shirt, or your girlfriend's velvet dress if you are feeling posh. As long as you keep your bakground uniform, and along the mid-tone, your smartphone mini photography result will be enhanced!
5. Photo editing on your smartphone. Now, after youve taken a few best shots. Its time to adjust the balance. I use pic stitcher app to arrange my pics when i want to feature more than one pics in a frame. And Line camera to adjust contrast and add txt.
6 Presentation - this is important. Remember, if your like me amd still using a 2009 era smartphone, well, you gotta remember the fact that the resolution wont be that crisp. So you gotta choose the part you want to present and present them in more than 1 picture, because people arent gonna notice all the details if you dont provide close up shots, especially with 3megapixels no.
So you can zoom in, crop and select the part you wanna show (my fav is the face) and upload that individually. Or you can create a few separate zoom-in pics and stitch them all up with pic-stitcher or any framing app.
This way you dont rely on your audience to zoom in an look at those pixelated details... You blow them up as big as possible and take it to them.
Hope this helps, and as always, you have my thank and respect for reading through this wall of text!!
Cheers Nuke
Be sure to check out our facebook for more tips, and nuke thoughts! There's a few up about washes, subtle paint schemes, nmm, feathering, more to come!
Slaanesh Champion looks awesome. I've always loved that style of helmet too, it used to be difficult to get hold of but I think the new plastic slannesh fantasy battle kits have a few variants...
Don't forget chaps, Nukearts are providing an awesome first prize for the our painting competitiion, and stuff for 2nd and 3rd placed entries too, at Animosity. To enter the Nukearts Painting Competition simply go to our Campaign Weekend thread and get your ticket to attend...

I've always had a soft spot for that helmet too! Probably because the first few White Dwarfs I got had Paul Sawyer building up a heavily Slaanesh influenced force. If you don't mind going outside GW there's a few variants available from other sources too! (I wanted to do a cult of slaanesh army back in storm of chaos.)
Continuing with the chaos theme, I'll be uploading some recent Chaos Daemon Princes tomorrow! I definately recomend you guys check out Geordies event, we are looking forward to supporting it and rest assured the mini will be all sorts of Nuke-Awesome!
They're all so lovely! Are the daemon princes painted by a different painter than most of the smaller minis? They seem to be of a different yet still astonishing style.
I really love the OSL!

Just got word back from Nuke. 3 Staff worked on this: Nuke Assembled, Another basecoated, a third airbrushed and did about 70% of the work, Nuke returned and did detailing and a few touch ups here and there. He likes to add a personal touch to every project in this way, and having more than one staff on each piece ensures demanding and high, but consistent quality control!
geordie09 wrote:I wonder if anybody would complain if I entered the competition too?
Haha! Personally I think it would be a bad example if you didn't!
More Trolls
Okay guys.... I am not the best painter or modeler in the world, I have a go, slap some paint on, etc etc. However Nuke Arts is redoing one of my armies to make them into a force to be proud of, this I feel is something we need to highlight and showcase on here! If you have any old forces you want a repaint given to, hit me up at: ukrep@nukearts.co.uk
So the humble begins of of the rebirth of my poor broken, mispainted marines:
A complete strip of 2500 points, gaps filled on my vehicles, bases removed for nicer bases to come, left shoulder pads removed to be replaced with forgeworld ones!
I will search through the Nuke archives for an example of when we did this before, for a used Eldar army a client purchased off Ebay Stay tuned!
An example of a largely second hand army, that was largely warped, and thickly covered with paint that the Nuke Studio restored and worked upon!
Nuke Tip European Flesh from Nuke himself
[/URL]
Nuke Painting Tip: Euro-style flesh, and implication on a higher gaming standard miniature.
Ok - this is completely my own interpretation and generalization of the European style of painting NOT caucasian flesh tone - the terminology "euro-flesh" derived from my own observation.
From my experience, it seems that there are more single/display standard minis from Europe (Poland / Italy / France / Spain) whereas we see a lot more army commissions coming out from US / UK. So of course when I look for inspiration, I often look at European artists' works (GD entries, EuroMili entries). This article is about how to implement the style, simplify it, and apply to your higher gaming standard miniatures (non-competition entry minis)
Of course you may argue that there's plenty of god-like painters outside of Europe, and you are right, there's plenty indeed!
Euro Flesh: My own definition
- Full dynamic of tones: shadow, mid tone, highlight and extreme highlight.
- Color nuance: with purple / yellow and sometimes green/blue, even for human flesh.
- Blending: this depends on the artist, often we can see that the colors aren't seamlessly blended on purpose, which gives a distinctive style.
- Eyes: not just a black dot on white... usually composed of more than two colors, with shinning highlight in the middle.
- Very minimal use of black and white
Application (how I do it)
The flesh on the sample picture took me about... 15-20 minutes to paint, using successive layering technique, with the aid of glaze medium to help 'feather' the edges. I used Creative Arts size 1 for the body / face / eyes / hair.
Colors I used, from dark to light:
- Panzer Ace Shadow Flesh (or GW Dark Flesh)
- Vallejo Model Color Purple
- GW Bugman's Glow
- GW Cadian Flesh tone
- Panzer Ace Highlight Flesh
- White
Why not using all GW, or all Vallejo?
Because Panzer Ace medium flesh is too orangey for me, and GW Bugman's glow and Cadian flesh tone are what we use for other standards too (so we remain the overall consistency amongst our standards)
Steps:
1. Preferably prime with white. Not that this matters... usually the model will be airbrushed for other colors (so sometimes we start off with a green face.
2. Light layer of Bugman's Glow - 70% coverage, not too thick.
3. Shading with diluted Dark Flesh + purple around the shaded areas like the side of the pelvis / navel / under the cheekbones and eyes. Repeat until you get the shading depth you desire.
4. Highlight with Cadian flesh tone + Bugman glow + glaze medium. Any wet pallet users can jump for joy here! (not me though) - repeat this 2-3 times on the raised areas, and adding more Cadian Flesh tone in the mix after each layer... like this
Cadian Flesh Tone = CFT
Bugman's Glow = BG
Glaze Medium = GM Flesh Highlight = FH
White = W
5. Adding additional shading, if needed.
Using super thinly diluted dark flesh + purple, I drop a tiny drop of the mixture around the side of the nose, mouth, belly botton, and glaze the side of the pelvis area again lightly.
6. Repeat the layer 6, with Flesh highlight + white + Glaze Medium... what I did was dotting this on as extreme highlight to imitate the reflection on shiny surfaces like the upper part of the lips, the tip of the nose, and tiny dabs around the stomach.
Done!
I hope this is helpful! If you're reading this part it means you've conquered yet another wall of text, so well done!
After so many requests - here is one way I add blood / gore to a miniature. I wouldn't call this a 'recipe' because once you have acquired the ingredient, it's done.
First you gotta run to the closest hobby store and get this:
- Tamiya X-27 Clear Red (クリヤーレッド)
Really simple... X-27 is a clear gloss enamel based paint, dries clear and glossy. It could be diluted with enamel thinner (although I don't use it) or turpentine. Not that it needs diluting anyway.
The paint has almost no opacity, meaning whatever it covers will be visible through the layer of thick red goo... that's when the fun start!
Application(s)
Oh there are so many ways to apply blood! Use your imagination and unleash your wildest gore-dream. Here's what I use to apply X-27 on my minis
1. SLASH!!!! *splatter splatter splatter*
Load a brush full of X-27 and simply use your mouth to blow really hard
2. *drip* *drip*
Use a toothpick or a small brush and apply directly on the floor
3. *ARGGHHHH MY ARMMM* - *Smearing blood everywhere*
Big, bristly brush or a Q-tip .... smear it on whatever you want
OK - I will continue with more gory applications in the next episode: Water-based blood.
Have fun, and if you find this useful, please like, comment, and share it!

Things have been quiet image wise on here, this is because Nuke is teaching me how to edit the images so that we can have massive updates rather than the slow trickle. ( Busy studio = less time for Nuke to edit images.)
Nuke's been working on:
A touch we put on the models is to mount commanders on display stands, this really lets you show off the army. Plus it's fun!
Although we do imitate GW style on request, we love to add weathering and patina. This gives you Raven Wing Nuke-Style! Our own unique twist ;D

Wahoo!
This one's for you and the animosity goers. Nuke began work on the prize mini today, decided stock miniature is not prizey or display enough. And has decided to work an an awesome display diorama, starring an Imperial Fist and an unfortunate Daemon Prince. Strictly WIP of course, this is just a mock up of the pose, green stuff work to come! I believe the idea of painting some yellow for a change has gone to Nuke's head
This miniature is being created especially for the Animosity Campaign Weekend in December. The winner of our painting competition will walk away with this awesome piece, as well as having the oppurtunity to play in a weekends worth of narrative gaming.
For more info, to find out how to join us for the weekend and potentially win this generously gifted, you can check our dakka page...
Thank you! It's still a rough mock up and there's alot of work to come. But we have a feeling this piece is going to be something the studio can be really proud of!

Indeed.
Any chance of a tutorial or hints/tips for "roughly mocking" that sort of thing up?
My first attempt at a bit of fabric taught me a lot (mostly not to do it the way I did it )
The earlier painting tutorials were very interesting and will be useful in the future.

It's posts like this that makes us keep a blog! Thanks for the comment, and be sure to check back!

Complete pleasure mate! Hopefully there will be a link between the animosity events and Nuke Arts for a long time to come!
Okay Guys, sorry about the lack of updates lately but the studio is swamped (In a great, good way.)
Our friends over at animosity are doing an ace campaign week, end, story driven. A friendly bunch with some great painted minis. Did I mention they are also receiving a display standard painted custom conversion based on the 25th anniversary mini and a Daemon Prince? From Nuke as a prize for the painting competition.
Well they need two non-imperial players, get on down. Play some awesome 40k, have a shot at a Nuke Freebie, represent!
I wish that I could paint as well as Nukearts studio. I also really appreciate the fact that you are willing to give little tutorials to help other painters get better and learn new techniques. Some of the other painting studios try to keep all of their secrets super close to their chest which is really offputting.
I will say now that my hobby New Year's Resolution will be to learn how to weather models, such as adding scuffs, scrapes, rust and other environmental/battle damage.

Thank you for keeping the rest of us inspired!
Thank you for the kind words! Practice makes perfect mate.
We understand why some commission painters would keep their secrets close to their chest: however we feel we're part of the community so we want to share our experience out there!
Sounds like a great idea, battle damage, and pigment weathering can be super fun! There's some tuts on the facebook we haven't put on here yet so be sure to check them out. We're also thinking about putting up articles on Dakka in the near future
That's a really great prize you've got painted there!
A question -- How are GW metallics painted? I've been using the GW burnished gold and I'm less than pleased with its coverage. I've been trying to skip the use of these glittery paints altogether, but I still need it sometimes.

Feel the LOVE!
Thanks man! The love has been felt

Burnished gold has never really had great coverage, I used to use it over the top of dwarf bronze (I think that's the colour.) The silver paints GW put out are pretty good however. There's a few things you can do with gold to get it to work:
Use brown as a base coat or a mix of brown and gold, build it up over a couple of layers. Use vallejo model colour golds or the new gw golds which are better coverage than the old gw golds in my experience. Or, and this I believe is the best option, get liquid metal golds from Vallejo. These are metallic pigments in alcohol, and you have to mix them with isopropynal alcohol (cheap off ebay) or they can be too thick as the solvent evaporates quickly, use alcohol to clean your brush, and use a synthetic brush ( the ones gw have are synthetic.) This paint has amazing coverage, and a shine that is second to none. Personally 90% of the golds I paint are using these, just do not mix with water or clean brush with water as it will rust! However once you use these golds you'll love painting gold believe me! There's a few shades so you'll never have to use gold acrylics again! They also do a silver which is pretty good, and copper.

This is yours trulys own personal army the Nuke team are working on, I'd like to remind you that these were sent in in a pretty poor state, bad paint job, gluing, mould lines, etc. Now they're getting the Nuke treatment, in the studios personal style!
any tips for painting Imperial fist, my lil bro wants to work on an Imperial Fist army, and i have thought of getting him a battleforce once he graduates from HS.
Taken from the Facebook! Going to be taking more pics and uploading as articles at some point.
"Nuke's Painting Tip: Yellow 101
I've heard people saying that yellow is a difficult to pull off. Because its poor coverage and vibrancy, yellow often leaves your miniature looking like a) a blob of dried paint, b) something from Hasbro or Konami that you picked up for your five year old nephew.
So in this article I will cover everything from the easiest way to paint yellow, mainly focusing on non-airbrush technique, because I'm nice
----
Getting the first coat down smoothly:
Yellow is HELLISH to paint on dark surface, so here is what you can do to get that first coat of yellow down smoothly without wasting time doing tons of layers and leaving brushmarks on your mini
A: Can spray (household brands work fine, as long as it's matte) - go over to a hardware store and buy a can of white primer and a can yellow paint. Make sure they're matte, not glossy.
Simply prime your minis white, then go over with yellow. Easy as.
B: Glaze, or thinned paint over white surface. As simple as it sounds - prime your mini white, then using diluted down paint (or glaze) and a large brush (so you leave less brushmarks), go over the white surface with yellow until you're happy. The keys are to dilute your paint, and use a large brush.
--------
How to shade yellow?
No... I bet you don't want your Imperial Fists army looking like that Bumble Bee toy... you want it to be more realistic and to have some depth to it. If so, try this
Wash:
- Personally, I'm not so fond of using black wash over yellow. It's too unnatural. Brown or dark red are more suitable. For the mini in the picture, I used:
Vallejo Game Ink - Black
Vallejo Game Ink - Brown
Satin Varnish (to add some viscosity, you can use water, glaze medium, matte varnish or acrylic medium or lahmein medium if it please you)
Make sure you dilute your wash down and dab any excess wash away before it dries and leave stains on your mini.
-----
Advanced Shading / highlighting to add depth
In the picture, you can see that there's a gradation from dark brown to yellow. There's two things you need to know
NOTE 1) You can't get that smooth gradation with normal washing technique (gravity and drying time won't be that kind to you - you'll be left with stains)
NOTE 2: Please please please don't try to paint yellow by starting with black primer then layer it up to brown -> yellow and so on... it's too time consuming and tedious
NOTE 3: you can use an airbrush to do add gradation, but when it comes to small surfaces like knuckles / chest / top of backpack, it's really hard to control. in the picture I used a brush to do it because airbrush-shading is harder to control and very directional.
OK - most of the theories out of the way,
So Here's exactly how I did it:
NOTE - For those who doesn't have an airbrush, just skip the first few steps and use the aforementioned method of getting the yellow basecoat down instead
Step 1: German Yellow Primer
Step 2: German Red Primer (pre shading from the bottom)
Step 3: Zenithal Highlight with grey primer
Step 4: German Yellow Primer
Step 5: VMA Ocher
*Packs away the airbrush* .... phew!
Step 6: Add chipping and other details
*Now the important bit*
Step 7: With a medium sized brush (not huge) I washed the whole mini with the mentioned wash recipe
Step 8: With thinned down Dark Flesh and a detail brush, I washed the edge.
Step 9: Lightly paint the areas that you want shaded with Scorched Brown (or Dark flesh) - really really diluted down the paint and use they feathering technique.
Repeat until you get the depth of color that you want.
Step 10: Optional - if you want to add extra edge highlight, you can use yellow or yellow+white.
-----------
Summary:
The key to a nice and deep yellow is, for me, the mixture of the use of right shading colors and of course, the depth of shade (shadow) itself. Other little things like weathering and using complementing colors to boost the overall tone of your work is really subjective to what you're working on.
Righty... Gotta go back and finish this guy.
I hope this wall of text of a tutorial is helpful for those who are painting their Imperial Fists, Iyanden or yellow nids.
Please share, like, and comments - I will be very grateful and motivated to write more tuts!
Glad to help! Love pre heresy imperial fists, also great to see.
Quick PIP/WIP of a Vampire heroes/lords display coming up... for a full army: we like for their to be a special little display to show off characters. Often if this means the bases will be unwieldy in the game we magnetize the miniatures to the display, and then to a more appropriate gaming base. The display base also often has a clear plastic cover which goes on top to protect minis during transit or if on display in a store or something
Both the skin and carapace will have another lyer with the airbrush, super thin like, to dull down the high lights and spots... will create an alien thin membrane kind of look! To mke it more like the swarm lord.
All I can say about my experiences with you guys is extremely positive!
For those folks considering placing an order I can definitely recommend Nuke Arts!
If i'd have been in on friday to receive the delivery the first time it would have made it in little more than four days, which is better than some who are UK based! It was extremely well packaged and the quality? Well, the pictures on the site speak for themselves!
Thanks guys. Look forward to our continuing partnership!

Thanks very much Geordie, like wise mate Highly recommend Geordie's events for those who game for fun!
Elmir wrote:What material do you use for those odly shaped rocks?
It's cork We also cover the cork in superglue, any superglue will do. This makes it hard and durable, and avoids paint wastage: cork will absorb paint so might take a few layers if it's got a layer of superglue it's rock hard and there's no problem!
And Nuke's been messing bout with my Emps children, New look will have no rust, but alot of battle damage. A tone darker on the shadows, with a zenithil highlight, and lighter edge highlight. I like. Strictly PIP. What o you guys think?
RiTides wrote:When's the projected finishing time on those Bio-Titans? They're looking good but I'd like to see close-ups once done.
I believe they are finished, Nuke was working them over the Christmas holidays, however the studio is closed I believe until the 4th. And then they are moving to a larger space. However to keep you going I have this image Nuke sent me just before X Mas:

Awesome paints on the custode(?) and Angron. Personally, I don't really enjoy bright gold on anything, but hey, it looks great and I can't argue with that! (Y)
