Which I just found out from radio 4's Today program.
WHAT?!?!
Does this mean that a: 4chan has replaced the Bildeberg group, b: memes have more power than record companies, or c: I'm completely out of touch after just 6 months and this is just The Crazy Frog all over again?
I remember it when is was just starting to go viral and before he made an alternative version which isn't as good.

It's like a metaphor or something for how crap most music is to the point where it now doesn't matter what the lyrics mean because they weren't really saying anything anymore...

He doesn't have the sunglasses D:
We do get to see more of the chick though ;D

It means its a big improvement over the X Factor gak infecting the UK, it has a different attitude to most music in its genre. Gangnam = playing around, Gangsta = head firmly up bottom.
If I recall correctly, Psy has been on the "Ellen" show twice now, teaching Ellen Degeneres and her crowd how to do the dance from that song. I was also at a local college bar/club two weeks ago, and they actually played the original version in its entirety...and I lost my gak when I saw people who'd probably never actually watched the video dance away to it
So, needless to say, that song has become pretty popular in the US also.

Why are you assuming 4chan is somehow connected to its success, or that 4chan has anything to do with the cancerous garbage floating around the mainstream web? I think it's a pretty good song. It's pretty cool that it's gotten such good attention.
As far as I know, 4chan wasn't involved. It was posted on youtube on the official Psy page. Someone saw and sent to a friend and so on and so on. It is now at 1/3 of a billion views, which is nuts. It was just an infectious song that people liked with a fun video.
I also think it is interesting that it is a pop song that is using pop music to critique pop culture materialism. There was a quote from Psy about people only spending $2 on lunch so they could spend $6 on a cup of coffee, and how silly he thought that was.
I went on iTunes and bought this song, and the other like 5 that are on the album... Gangnam style is the only one that I can consistently listen to. The others aren't bad... I mean they are... but they're somewhat listenable.
So help me, I frigging love this song. I haven't heard it on the radio, but I don't own a radio, so....
It's interesting, I generally hate American/Canadian pop music, but I do like some British and a lot of pop music that isn't in English at all. Nothing I can think of off the top of my head, but I've noticed when I hear pop music with lyrics I can understand, I usually turn it off, but when it's in a foreign language, I often like it.
It might be that I like it because it isn't entirely generic. The fact I can't understand the words helps too, since western pop is so same-y when it comes to... well, nearly everything.
One western pop song is every other western pop song with a different singer using different words to describe the exact same event. Soon they're going to run out of ways for the males to talk about 'loving' random women, and for females to talk about 'loving' and then rejecting random males.
Even if GS was about that stuff, the fact I can't understand what is being said means that it can't taint my enjoyment. Also, the video being devoid of muscled male dancers with fake tan, make up and oiled bodies wearing nothing but speedos and shoes, and size -1 women with fake tan, huge boobs and a small square of material covering their nipples and ladypassage, does make it infinitely more tolerable.

Exactly the same chords too
Back OT - I quite liked Gangnam. Even though that's really not my usual style. It's probably because it's just fun, and not taking itself too seriously.
My friend showed me this video a couple weeks back. To say that I was wildly amused was an understatement. I think it's really the amalgamation of everything together: the lyrics, the foreign lyrics, the video, the dance moves, and the GORGEOUS redheaded Korean girl...all of it makes for an awesome 4 minutes. Did I mention the Korean girl was gorgeous? And I'm usually not attracted to Asian girls, but wow. Wow.

That's Hyuna, she's actually a pretty successful popstar in her own right, even had a music video or two banned from Korean TV for being too racy.
Here she is being really hot:
Here's another Psy song off his 5th album that's pretty awesome
That live concert that got linked is insane... I can't recall ever seeing a concert on a scale like that in the U.S. even Ozzfest.

I'm regularly surprised at the number of pop songs I "hate" after first listening to them, only to find myself humming the tune a week later.

I think it's more about the tone, pitch and inflection than the actual words. I know I listen to J-Pop all the time. I don't understand a lick of it, but I still like most of it.

I guess I'm showing my age in that I always assume that 80% of stupid, stupid fun internet memes come from 4chan, whereas nowadays of course it's Reddit.

Pfft, reddit is just a filter for 4chan. But yeah that's were I first came across this. (4chan)
Manly tears of joy were shed. I also enjoyed that amazingness of that video being immediately followed up by a "I don't want to live here anymore" meme photo. How anyone could even see the just the still screen from the video and not realize how great it is to live here, I just don't understand.

a: you're discovering your inner judgemental old man and b: you'll be dancing to Gangnam Style in the retirement home
Also more hot Korean girls dancing to Gangnam Style for reasons and stuff.
I was going to post that I've listened to the song twice and don't really care for it. The video is kind of funny though, specifically the elevator scene.
However, the song brought us cute chicks dancing in short skirts, so it has some redeeming quality.
At first I just thought "this justifies the various war crimes committed against Korea, it is that bad..." But now I've listened to it a bit more, I actually quite like it.
Asian pop seems a lot more light hearted and, well, fun than the rather generic "And I was in Luuuuuurve, now let's paaaarty!" Western pop. You can tell that Psy does not for one second take himself seriously, and I like that.
Bad Apple is still better though.
Incidentally, I wonder whether the song's popularity will help ease the shaky relationship China and Japan have with Korea?
I often Hear the term Hater come from two type of people
1: Musicians making crappy music
2: "Gangstas" that sit around all day and complain about having no job.

Hotsauceman just blew his cover. I guess you could say the dogs sniffed the cat out of the bag.
We know who you are now.
We know what you are.
And I'm going to bet that you know what's going to happen.

You completely missed the point of what I was saying.
Meh, it's not THAT bad. The production's pretty good, even if the lyrics are risible and she's adopted an American accent for some unknown reason. I mean, she's from London - UK hip-hop is long past the point of people rapping in faux American accents. It just sounds anachronistic.
In any case, it's not like she's popular here - she was pelted with bottles of piss at a recent music festival!
UPDATE: Actually, as I'm writing this I've been doing a little research - turns out 'Swagger Jagger' was written and produced by an American team.

That video officially hurt. Officially. I made it 40 seconds before I considered slitting my wrists to make it go away.
No offense to anyone who likes the song..I think its one of the worst songs in the popular music industry to be honest. As a DJ it pains me whenever someone requests it at the DJ Booth.

I hope you dont actually accept requests as a dj, iirc thats one of the cardinal sins.

But it is an epic tune.
I don't allow requests most of the time unless its a really good track. I just don't like the song because I utterly hate pop. I'm an EDM DJ and producer the music irritates me.
Gangnam Style, the viral internet sensation featuring Korean pop-sensation Psy, has earned a new accolade over the weekend — this time in Afghanistan. It has become the first international music hit to be banned by the conservative Taliban leadership since Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back” was outlawed in 2006 for provoking fits of lust in the local men when sung by young dancing boys.
