Or rather, roll my own. I'm off to the US next week, and I've been wondering about something: Do many people roll their own cigarettes out there? I'm a committed roll-up smoker, and I was wondering how easy it would be to source rolling tobacco during my stay, prices etc.

Where you going exactly?
In Missouri we do have places that sells tobacco and paper.

I'm not going to vouch for its quality but Tops and Bugle loose tobacco is generally available at grocery stores. A smoke shop will kind of obviously have a better selection. Gas stations are hit and miss, but nearly always have papers. If you "roll" your own with filters you might want to bring some with you, I've only ever found them available by mail.
Nashville will have some quality smokeshops for you to investigate so you should be able to get some decent cut for rolling. No promises on the stuff you smoke at home, but don't settle for the gas station or grocery store stuff in any decent sized city.

Tobacco stores here sell rolling paper and tobacco in a can. They really like it if you call first and ask "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?" When they say yes, reply "Well you should let him out!"
As he just joined 4 months ago and doesn't know you from Adam, he probably thought fett was making a generic Nashville joke, as wanna-be country music stars flock to that area.
His location is listed as Loserville, however, so there might be something there, too.
If Albatross is anything like me quality of Tobacco is a non-issue, cheap is best. Though not the very cheapest as that tends to leave ones mouth dryer than a nun's c....... Swan filter Tips can be difficult to get ahold of even in europe, i had to buy a bag of horrible papered filters the diameter of Upvc waste pipes last time i was in France.
I smoke rollies because if i am gonna be addicted to smokes it might as well be a cheap habit.
What's your fave Albatross? I vary between, Drum Blue, Old holburn (thats a robust ciggie for sure) and that cheap yellow pack Golden virginia. I tried 'American Spirit' a few months ago, it was nice but dried to mummy wrappings in about 2 days. Blue Rizla is my fave.
I'm a Green Golden Virginia man myself.... In Europe it's almost impossible to find decent tobacco! However, I have only been to France and Italy, so maybe there's something in that....
In the Philippines (my second home), it's a practically non existent way of smoking. Although this is probably something to do with smokes going for around 55p a packet.....
@Perkustin et al. - I switch between Amber Leaf and Pall Mall. I actually smoke Pall Mall pretty much exclusively because it's as smooth as AL, plus it's a lot cheaper these days. AL has got really fething dear, free skins or not!
Yeah, for me price is a big deal. It's SOOO expensive to smoke here in the UK. Thankfully I've found a brand that's cheap and really nice. Don't really have a paper preference, though I get through a lot of extra-large silver Rizlas, if you catch my sweet-smelling, ever-so-slightly intoxicating drift.
Alby, make sure if you get the chance to, go to Uptown's... it's on Hillsboro Pike
Last time I was there, I saw they carried a pretty good selection of pipes and cigars... I'm not sure about rolling stuff for your own cigs, but it may be worth a look... If nothing else, they can probably send you someplace that does carry that sort of thing.

Yeah i started smoking rollies to get rid of leftover tobacco, now it's all i smoke. I am not a heavy smoker (5 or 6 a day) but if i am in an smoking household/or out in town and the shandies are being quaffed it can be 30+.
The price has went up 30-50% in a few years, for a long time before that the price was quite stable.
I've got a mate who's into Pall mall, keep meaning to give it a try, well that's two recommendations, that's decided my next choice. Drum blue smells like old ham but i really like it for the price. Cannot afford golden Virginia original just a bit too expensive.
Best cigarette of the day for me? Around 6.45, driving to work, the car's had a few minutes to heat up, on a long straight (i tend to veer wildly while lighting my ciggies ) cannae beat it. I cant drive any distance without one. Have even been known to roll at traffic lights, but i haven't got the skill for a one handed trucker roll at the wheel.
I don't know a lot of smokers anymore, but hand-rolling is reasonably common here. Tobacco can be bought just about anywhere; specialty smoke shops for good stuff, and quite a lot of supermarkets and gas stations for basic cheap stuff. Rolling papers are available at every market, convenience store, and gas station, IME.

Oh aye, I chuff like a bastard when I'm drinking. Funny thing, I started off smoking rollies when I was about 14 - I've never been a big 'real' cig smoker. They taste like crap to me.
It used to be that rolling paper could be had from Wal-Mart. I doubt you will have difficulty finding a Wal-Mart. As for leaf, you could also get something or another at Wal-Mart but I reckon you'd better find a tobacco shop. They are all local places so it will be a matter of searching the white pages or online, as Alfndrate shews above.
My bad if i offended you. I only came to Dakka to read about rumors and view the amazing gallery but never post, and even when I did make an account I really never post much. Read the What do YOU do thread and found out you were a recording artist. Said to my self "wow, that is cool and makes sense now."

So long as we enjoy our shorter lifespans.
I think I would prefer the £2000 extra a year and the longer life, could afford a small but good holiday. That also could afford some other really good things.
It's not even nice or relaxing, the exhale and inhale is what's doing it not the cigs.
Cancel that.. I missed the reveiws and was only looking at location. The reveiws were not spectacular.
This place seems to have some good reveiws though.

Nothing, it's actually good for you, just pointing out that a lighter is required for the cig and your drink is flamable.
I remember someone burnt their eyebrows and eyelids from doing that.
Automatically Appended Next Post: A drink once in awhild is good, not binging.

I'm going on a small but good holiday. Did you not read the OP?

That's simply untrue. Also, I have literally never - EVER - heard of someone lighting a smoke and accidentally igniting their drink. That doesn't happen.

I left, so they decided not to carry on. I wrote all the material, see.

Save your money. It's way overpriced and each hit only lasts about 15 minutes - if it's good stuff. Then you want more...
InquisitorVaron wrote: Then you could afford a big holiday It is true, none of the chemicals in the smoke would have any relaxing effect, infact they've got the opposite.
Regardless it's a silly idea.
It's all psychological, if you think it will relax you it will.

I'm not really that serious about it I wouldn't spend any money on it, like all drugs I just ingest whatever my friends offer me for free (except cigarettes I don't see the point in them, I do drugs to alter my mind) but since most of them are nerdy I rarely do much drugs.
Your an idiot. Your sniffing dish washer tablets.
Smart one sherlock. Please be polite with other posters. This is mandatory, and a condition of membership on the website. -Mannahnin
Wrong you were right first time Even though they do have that sort of chemical in cigs, they have paint in for feth sake.
I thought I was being witty in speaking about you taking drugs, if your friends offered you coke for free it would be dish washer tablets, that's what happens in the UK. Perhaps your dealers are trust worthy and don't fob you off.
Rolling a cig is one thing I've never gotten the hang of. Thankfully smoking is a rare treat for me and loading a hookah is much easier. Unfortunately I don't think that would work well in a motor vehicle...
Evidently I don't do coke, yet I've seen it bandied aroundand talked to some of the people selling it.
It wasn't a boarding school of choice for the rich kids...
I read an article that said teenages are the new gurus of life experience.
Anyway freedom of speech and all that. Noy trying to offend you.
I'm not offended at all, pal. I just think that perhaps it's not prudent for you to lecture 30yr old indie-rock musicians from the North of England on drug-use!

Thanks, man. I am fething TURBO excited right now. I fly on Tuesday morning!
Ohh... I should warn you, if you don't have to be anywhere specific this coming Friday DO NOT GO ANYWHERE!!!!
This coming thursday is Thanksgiving day (the day where all Americans over eat, helping themselves become even more obese, and watch American Football), and on Friday, it's called Black Friday, because millions of idiotic twits rush out to the same shops to rush and get Christmas shopping started (it's ugly as feth, but quite hilarious to watch on TV)

Oh by all things holy Ably... Ensis is right... STAY.INSIDE.ON.FRIDAY.
I don't care how much $$$ you'd save, you couldn't PAY ME to go shopping on this day.

Translation: "Back off, the professionals have this covered"
and yeah holy gak fairies... the terror of black friday...
It's really not that bad. Just don't go out early in the morning to malls, department stores (including Wal-Mart) or stores that sell things like consumer electronics. They'll be opening at 5 or 6 in the morning with some insane bargains, albeit usually in very limited numbers, and the crowds rushing to get at them can be crazy. If you go out later in the day or evening it's just a busy shopping day, with a bit more traffic than usual.
Yeah, I was aware of the the Dreaded Black Friday. Probably won't affect me too much, as I can't imagine I'll be going to shopping malls much during my trip - the schedule as far as I'm aware includes a whole load of sensible academic stuff, more's the pity!
I'm going to see the folks at Belmont University about some research partnership, then the Country Music research centre/Hall of Fame to meet some scholars. Apparently I'll be having thanksgiving with the current owners of Sun Records and a whole bunch of other interesting industry folks too, which promises to be very cool.
It sounds really cool! I'm jealous you're having such an exciting trip. I'll just be causing trouble at home and painting figures/writing a brief paper on the Investiture Crisis of the Medieval Roman Catholic church
I feel like we should have all chipped in to buy Alby a video camera for him to document his adventure vlog style. Because this has to be fething hilarious.

Mate, you should have fething SEEN the state of me last night! I was in a bad part of town drinking malt-liquor and literally throwing money at strippers. I can barely remember leaving my last message - I DO remember sitting in the hotel lobby drunkenly slobbering all over a Wendy's whilst surfing the net at around 1am, though. Off to IHOP now.
Unless you roll your own. No, I've only met a few people who still roll their own cigarettes, and most of them are older than fifty.
Well, he did start the thread because he rolls his own, and was heading to a place where he was unsure of where to get his supplies.... and I doubt that he is more than 50, though I have been wrong before.
Yeah, I'm back. Nashville was awesome. I could easily see myself living in the south.
Stories? No problem! Went out for a drink in a honky-tonk on Broadway and ended up in a VERY dodgy strip club, drinking malt liquor (Old English! ) and making it rain. So, I asked this stripper to come out with me for drinks on the following Friday, and she said yes!
Check this out: She only fething showed up, didn't she!?
It was the most random, hilarious night of my life. I ended up dancing to an 80s cover band with a drunk stripper. She had a knife on her. So did I. We got them out in a bar to compare. It got messy.
Here's me at the end of the night:
That's an ice bucket on my head. The whole week was weird as feth, to be honest. Here's a random sampling of what I got up to:
- Got a private tour of the Country Music Hall of Fame
- Had dinner with the owners of Sun Records, plus the guy who produced 'Tequila'. Also, our host had worked for Atlantic and BMI, and was telling us cool stories about meeting Lennon, Jacko, Little Richard, Elton John... and fething Elvis! - Got accosted at the Tennessee State Fair by a redneck dude who looked like a traumatised Vietnam vet. He heard our accent and proceeded to sing Kinks songs at us for 20 minutes, surrounded by onlookers. That's when he decided to switch to Jethro Tull songs. Standing on one leg. He had a replica hand grenade on his stall. He threatened to pull the pin.
- Hung out at this huge mansion owned by a friend of our host, listening to revolutionary audio technology.
- Caught some gigs at the Bluebird Cafe. Guestlist, obviously. - Had the most 'country' Thanksgiving ever - loads of good food, wine and fiddle music, not to mention jars of moonshine and other, more exotic substances.
Thanks reds8n must have missed that detail, mind you it's 5:45 am over here and I'm doing a research essay for English so I'm not to surprised I missed it, I wish I could sleep (no point now though considering school starts in 3 hours).
It really was. It was like Fear and Loathing in Nashville. There's a picture I took of my mate with his arm around a cop, surrounded by a bunch of strip-joint bouncers in cowboy hats, floating around somewhere. I'll see if I can dig it out. Unfortunately, I can't post any pics of dancer we kidnapped, as she'd rather keep her job a secret online. She does other work too, see.
Bravo good sir, way to come to our country and live it up like a [hank hill voice]god danged American![/hank hill voice]. I wish we could do the same in other countries.
Glad you had a blast, you need to come back and visit New Orleans during Mardi Gras, Texas during football season, or Idaho during potato harvest... (actually I don't think that last one is a thing).

Or Eugene, Oregon during the "renaissance festival"
....I put quotes around that because it's a Ren-fair in name only... the hippy caravans make there way up to Eugene at this time of year and annually have their woodland sprite, nudey village, drugged filled extravaganza... From what I understand, if you are not participating it is quite hilarious and quite weird. (of course, if you are participating I'm sure it's still hilarious and weird)
