The Whiz store on route 9 off 495 is a great central Mass spot. They have 40k mini-tourneys every Tuesday night; 3 games of 1000 points each which are great for new players. They also have an active website site where you can arrange game times.

Totalcon was fun. There were only 11 40k players, but that was cool with me because we weren't packed into the space like sardines. All nice guys from the New England Area. Metagame included:
4 Grey Knight players (one had Sisters allied another with SW)
1 CSM & IG
1 Ravenwing
1 Necron & CSM
1 Necron
1 BA & IG
1 CSM & Daemons
1 other that I missed
Forgot my camera so no photos.

The last one was another GK. Jared, Dan and Pete had straight GK, IIRC, John had allied Sisters, Mike B had allied SW. I played against Jared, Mike B and Dan.

Lonedrow, thank you for putting this together!
I just want to add some more detailed information about the gaming group at Collectibles Unlimited in Concord.
If anyone is at all interested in playing in the 40k gaming group at Collectibles Unlimited on Tuesday evenings, come on in and check us out! (I swear, we don't bite). There are currently around 8 of us. The skill levels range from fresh beginners to 15-year veterans. We mix it up week to week with standard games, themed games, hero-bashes, skirmish games, terrain building, modelling/painting etc. We play 2 - 3 Apocalypse games per year, with the next one occurring in early April. We are currently planning to play the Crusade of Fire campaign over the course of the spring, starting in the next couple weeks. The store is stocked with all the GW goodness one could want and the staff is friendly.
If anyone is around the Concord area and would like to get in a game at Collectibles Unlimited or wants to know any more information about the Concord wargaming scene, please shoot me a PM.

Hello all!
I'm glad there is now a positive group of people dedicated to gaming in this area, I'd all but given up hope. I live in Derry, NH, and haven't had much luck the few times I wandered into nearby Game Castle to try and get a pickup game.
Anyone interested in setting up a game for Thursday, 1,850ish? Game Castle is nearby, but I'd be more than happy to travel to the north or south if it means hitting someone's regular haunt.

Howdy. For players living/working in Boston and/or western suburbs thereof, my club, DorkaMorka, rents out space at Watertown Square in Watertown, MA, to play every Thursday evening.
We're a diverse group of players, in our 20s, 30s, a few older. (The venue is adults only, 21+, as alcohol is served downstairs.) We have a core group of 15 or so players, and there's definitely room for more.
We play 40k, Bloodbowl, and some Malifaux.
We prefer friendly, "narrative" games. WAAC gameplay and "tournament" lists are frowned upon. Otherwise, we're a friendly bunch.
We're just starting up a 40k Spring campaign/league, and I'd say it's not too late to jump in. Or just come around and check us out if you're curious.
PM me for details, or if you prefer, wander over to our club forums at DorkaMorka to learn more, join, and set up a game in our Match Up sub-forum.

Hi guys, I'm Chase and I manage Battleground Games & Hobbies. We've got two locations in southeastern MA, one in Abington and one in Plainville.
Our 40k community is quite large and very active. We hold roughly 1 sizable event each month (30-40 players, more for Doubles events) in Plainville and now that the Abington store has moved into it's brand new space, we're starting to schedule larger events there too.
Please check out our message boards or find us on Facebook.
Thursday 40k happens every Thursday night in Plainville and sees 8-20 people.
The weekends in Abington see pick-up games as people come down and hang out.

I should be there, as usual. I usually get in a game with my friend Jamie around 7:30, but if anyone would like a game around 5:30, I'd love to throw some dice.
Yesterday's tournament at GC was fun. We had 14 people and a pretty good mix of armies. I had to remake my list at the last minute to drop a flyer as they were capping them at two. They were also allowing imperial armor, though I think only a few people brought any.

Hello,
I haven't played in a very long time and I really never learned the proper rules. I was looking for a low key place to learn how to play the game. I live in the Seacoast area of NH. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you very much for your time and I appreciate the help. Hope all is well.

Have you checked out Elite Hobbies in Dover, or Jetpack Comics in Rochester? It's been a while since I was last at Elite, but I remember them being really nice. I haven't been to Jetpack, but they're newer, and I heard they specifically cater to new players and folks learning.
Thanks for the game! Your finished Dark Angels look really sharp; the Rhinos in particular make me want to go back and do more work on weathering my armies. Nice stuff.

I have been to elite and bought some models but I don't really know anyone so its a little awkward to go and just randomly ask someone to teach me haha. I was hoping there was someplace I could go where they could teach me again haha

Post by: Mannahnin
Often the easiest way to get hooked in and arrange a game is to do what you're doing here (ask online), but for/on the local store's website.
Might want to give Jetpack a call; last I heard they were trying to build a community with some new players. They seem to have "wargaming Saturdays", according to their newsletter. I don't see a forum on the site, but maybe if you call they can point you at one.
http://www.jetpackcomics.com/weeklynews.html
Elite used to have a store website with an attached forum for Seacoast Wargamers, as I recall, but I'm not finding it now. They do have a current Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Elite-Hobbies-Models-LLC/123249711066442
You can probably make contact with some of their local gamers on that too.
On a related note, it looks like someone has organized a boardgaming meetup in Portsmouth, too, so there may be some player overlap between that and 40k or other tabletop minis.

I've gamed at Jetpack Comics from day one pretty much. Their community has grown A LOT in the past year and on saturdays you can find a really cool group of gamers who will be more than willing to help you out to learn the game and get some games in.
Also
The owner of Elite Hobbies is a really nice guy and i suggest you try both stores and pick the one that you like best.
In other news, sorry for the leave guys, real life forced a spot check and i rolled a 1. Got caught flat footed Automatically Appended Next Post: This post goes out to all the gamer that viewed this thread thinking it was truly a "wargaming" resource. Im sorry. Cleary the GW brain washing is taking effect. I realize there are so many games out there that are not produced by GW and are really fun great games. I dont play these games because i enjoy 40k enough that it satisfies my table top fix. I would really love to include all War games into our resource but its just not a realistic possibility for me to take on. That being said, This thread is dedicated to 40k with the occasional fantasy splashed in. The title will be changed to more appropriately reflect this.
As always this thread and group will be dedicated to growing the 40k community in the local area and helping new and veteran players network and expand their game experiences.

I have been a lurker for some time now while I was getting my army painted. They are finally done now ( http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/519467.page ) and I think I am ready to start playing. I live in Manchester NH and am looking for someone to show me the ropes of the game. My son and I have played a little at the kitchen table but I am now ready to step it up a bit. Im always willing to help a new player out. My next available game time is this Saturday after 5. Let me know and we can meet up at Game castle or Myriad if its easier for you.
In other news i just booked a four night stay at the Arlingron Hyatt for the Nova Open. Im wondering if any other local players are going and got rooms or plan too because im driving my SUV down and have plenty of room to carpool another person or two. The Game Castle in Londonderry is just starting an 1850 "Road to Feast of Blades" league. It technically started this last Saturday (though people are just starting to sign up), and the finals are scheduled for June 15th.
$15 entry (all goes toward prizes) with awards for...
Best Commander (store credit plus free entry to the Aug 10 FoB Qualifier)
Master of Painting + Conversions (store credit prize), based on the FoB painting rubric, which is available on their website and in the store.
Exemplar of Sportsmanship (store credit prize) decided by player votes, ties broken by staff.
This is a fixed-list league, but you're allowed to change your list once before your 4th game.

Everyone's always welcome. I don't remember seeing a min # of games; usually you have to play at least 5 or so to qualify for the finals.
Any day or night you can schedule a game is okay. Historically the most active days are Tuesday evenings and Saturdays, although I’ve gotten league games other nights by scheduling them ahead of time.

From North Andover to The Game Castle in Londonderry, NH should be less than a half hour without traffic. Of course, that may be more like an hour with traffic if you're leaving directly from work at 5, as 93N can be quite congested at that time of day. If you work a different schedule (getting out earlier or later) it'll be a breeze.
It's about the same distance to get to The Toy Soldier in Amesbury, MA although I don't know how 495N compares, traffic-wise.
There's also a newer place, Tabletop Arena, in Lowell, MA. That's only around 20min from you (if that), and it's mostly 495S, so may be against the flow of traffic and less commute time during rush hour.

I just want to mention a couple quick things:
1) Thanks to the guys at the Game Castle in Londonderry for putting on a great tournament today. The turnout was a little low but everyone had a great time and a lot of good 40K was played.
2) The 40k group at Collectibles Unlimited in Concord is starting a monthly 3-round 650pt tournament. The entry fee is $10. The tournaments will take place on the second Tuesday of each month, starting on June 10th. Games start at 5:30pm. 100% of entry money will go to prizes. It will be a very fun and laid back tournament environment.
The Collectibles group has grown significantly recently, but most of the players are new or not experienced in the cut-throat tournament world.
The idea behind this tournament series is to encourage quality, "rules correct" play in a fun and light atmosphere. The mission and organizational rules are based on a modified "40k in 40 minutes" system, with limits on FOC, vehicle armor ratings, and wounds-per-model. There is a strict 1 hour time limit per game.
There will be a carry-over penalty and bonus system for point limits between months to give advantages to lower placed players in an effort to ensure that every player is competitive and is having fun. (Ex: 1st place players in month #1 will have 30 points fewer in month #2, while the last placed player in month #1 will have 30 more points in month #2)
Bonus points are allotted to fully painted and fully WYSIWYG armies.
Prizes will be split between first, second, third, and last "pity" place finishers. We want as many players as possible to win some store credit so that they may expand their own army while also supporting a great local gaming store.
Please spread the word to your local clubs. This is a perfect opportunity for new players to enter the tournament-style 40k gaming world, and a wonderful opportunity for experienced players to show their mettle in a 3-hour 3-game format.
Please PM me with your email address if you would like a copy of the rules packet or have any questions.

Hey mannanhin would you be interested sometime in giving a tournament practice game to a random? I live less than an hour from the game castle, i live in north central MA. I'm not a D-Bag, I'm pretty well versed in the game, im interested in starting to do more tournaments, and your a pretty well versed/renouned local tournament player. I can play usually any day on the weekend. And can get to any store between battlegrounds and game castle.
This also extends to anyone else. Have a tournament you want practice games for, and don't have anyone to play with on the weekends(like me occasionally) post up or PM me as I'm down to help as long as I can make i that day(weekends only unfortunately)

Thanks for the kind words, Chance! Sorry I haven't met you yet. I think we've attended at least one tournament at Battleground together and I meant to say hi, as I've seen you posting on here a bit and know you're fairly local.
Weekends are usually busy for me, unless I'm hitting a tournament, but I'll definitely shoot you a pm or post here if I know I've got time free on a Saturday or Sunday.

Yah, manna we were at a battlegrounds tourney for sure(Dan bunker won I think). I played one of your adepticon teammates (jaime i believe his name was) in round 2 and he whooped me good haha.
I'm always weirded out just cold contact meeting people despite being almost 30 and a fairly outgoing guy. So next time we are at a tourney together I'll for sure say hi.

The mission and organizational rules are based on a modified " 40k in 40 minutes" system, with limits on FOC, vehicle armor ratings, and wounds-per-model.
Thanks for putting this on. I was there tonight and thought it was great. To anyone else looking at this thread and you are looking to get in some fast paced games where a new player can learn this is a great event. I am looking forward to going on the first Tuesday of July.

Thanks for coming! Everyone had a blast. Even me! (and I rolled the worst that any mortal has ever rolled in all of human history)
We had 11 players and got through three games in 3.5 hours. The winner took home $50 in credit, 2nd took $30, 3rd took $20, and the "weeny" last placed prize of $10 went to a very deserving new player (who had never played a game of 40k before in his life).
The next tournament is on July 9th at 5:30pm. Please let me know if you're interested and I'll send you a copy of the rules packet.

Anyone have any leads on any groups up North, say Littleton or North Conway? I moved way up in the sticks and know I'll have to drive to game but Concord is still 2 1/2 hours away so trips there are going to be limited.
Thanks!

Any tournaments scheduled for August or September? I've got some time off coming up, and wouldn't mind doing a tournament. Driving 2.5 hours to game is more rewarding when I get to play 3+ games.

Where are you coming from? The few I know of in August are August 10'th at the game castle in Londonderry NH, August 17th at battlegrounds in plainville MA, and aug 24th in Manchester CT at the time machine.

Hey there, been reading around trying to figure out where people game in NH for a while and came upon this post. I saw alot about southern new hampshire and parts of mass, but nothing about further up north, in particular the Lakes Region(tilton, belmont, laconia, gilford mainly). I know there are people that play up there but all the buisinesses that handled most of it seem to have gone the way of the dodo bird. Does anyone know anything about that area as far as 40k fantasy and warmahoards is concerned?

They're in Laconia but unfortunately they close in 3 days! i suggest contacting them to network and link up with other gamers in that area. Im sure there is group or two around there that plays on a semi regular basis. The next closest stop for you would be collectibles unlimited in concord, Jetpack comics in Rochester or Elite hobbies in Dover that i know of. Good luck and hope you find some gamers in your area!

hey guys, just wanted to pop in and say hi, sorry to necro the thread btw but i had to see what was up.
I'm a college student who got an IT job at a call center in the manchester area, and wanted to see how active the 40k community was. I'm moving up from New Jersey where im only a mile or so away from a insanely active store and hope theres an active community up this way. I mean i can see a lot of activity by this thread so i do have some hope. I also hope it wouldnt be a hindrance to have a really new guy around (played a game, got 1000 points IG that were pro painted and all as a gift, never used them, mostly sat around and took pics of the games haha) I hope to get in and actually throw some dice around though.

I can't really help with any of them but there is a Manchester in every state in NE beside RI I think ;p. I'm sure someone from any of those areas can help you out. As there are definately groups near each place. Sorry this isn't more helpful.

New Jersey!! I'm a Jersey native myself, but transplanted to New England about 10 years ago. The 40k community up here is alive and well with some of the best players in the country based in this area. The Plainville RI store Battlegrounds and Game On in Warwick RI host great tournaments. If you haven't already, register for Templecon ASAP- February weekend gaming convention in Warwick RI. Once you specify which Manchester you're located, we can give you more specific info on your local 40k scene.

Look us up on Facebook under the same name as this thread. The Astronomicon - NH/ MA Gaming Resource. That is where a lot of us connect for games and tournament accouncements. It is usually pretty easy to post up if you want a game and arrange to meet somewhere too. Hope to connect with you there.

Do any other games have a following there?

We have a group of about 10-11 guys playing. There is usually at least 6 people playing 40k on Saturdays. Right now, the main game is 40k and we have a couple of guys (me included) who play fantasy, warmachine, and x-wing (I actually don't play x-wing, and I am slow building up for fantasy and warmachine). Those last 3 are kind of random games that we play as a break from 40k when we feel like it. Other than that we have card games like MtG, CF-Vanguard, etc.
The gaming space is downstairs in the basement. We work with what we got and are always talking about ways to make things better (terrain is the project right now). A bunch of us are also trying to branch out and go to other area stores to play. It is part of our master plan to unite local gamers together. I am sure some would be receptive of alternative games; they would just need to be introduced. (the place for the robotech campaign I mentioned in the robotech thread is in Wareham). And we are always welcome to new players coming in.

I'd be game for it, and Boogy Man is always looking for more games (he just needs to like the aesthetic). The others would be a lot tougher sell. I guess I am really going to have to start working on my terrain making skills. Dang college taking all my time .

And that is why we are friends (besides the awesome brony vs anime fan ribbing ). Games are fun; so why limit your scope. If it stops being fun then you stop playing.

So what does the 40K scene in Concord (NH) look like? I'm going to be back home by the end of the summer (getting out of the Army after 10 years) so I'm curious when people play and what else is up? Also are there any X-wing groups/players in the area?

There is/was a regular group who play at Collectibles Unlimited on Tuesday nights I think. 6 or 8 regular guys. I played there once last summer but then had some family issues preventng me from going. I teach college at night in the fall and spring so have not been back, but plan on it once classes are over this semester.

I might swing down to concord depending on the game nights in CU. Well outside of Concord the game scene is growing to, there has been a recent reinstatement of regular game nights (every Sat) in Toy City of Keene NH with a very active crowd of 40k and fantasy gamers.

Collectibles Unlimited has been working on getting their 40k and WHF on regularly of late. Tuesday nights is a regular thing, and they do scheduled open play days a lot of weekends (including today). There are also gamers from all skill levels so you can definately get games against more beginners or more experienced guys that can teach you the ropes for sure. We play on Tuesdays and like IMack said were probably starting a map based campaign in the middle of April. 15$ buy in with guaranteed games every week.

Hi guys.
I hope I'm not necro'ing this thread or anything.
I've recently moved over to NI and am currently based in Greysteel. I've been looking for fellow 40k players for a while, but never thought to check on Dakka!
Is anyone local either here in in Derry who'd be interested in games at some point? I can get into Derry with little problem, and it'd be fun to meet some likeminded people.
I tend to run fluffier lists with hints of Forgeworld here and there, and I lvoe conversions, so I honestly don't mind how we play. It's much more about having fun than winning in my eyes.
- Wait, nevermind. I misread the post. This is in America isn't it?....
Nevermind!

And how big is the Tues 40K group there and what time do people play? (as they close at 1700 (5:00pm for most of you)

The group at Collectibiles Unlimited is about 6 or 8 reglar players. I have not been for awahile (2 months or so?) because my sons schedule changed a bit and I take him to piano on Tuesday evenings. They do close "officially" at 5pm but if you come on Tuesday evening you can get in and there are people playing. People start showing up around 5pm and games start around 5:30 or so.
