Tigurius is looking pretty sweet so far, Knightley

Love the Hammernators... just ooze resilience and power... although I'd be trying to snipe them in the head if I came up against them. All that thick armour and sheilds and leave the noggins exposed hehe.

Tigurius is coming along really nicely as well, he has had some encounters with Tyranids in the past... wonder if it's time for another fight with a certain hive fleet

Well the hammers came out great bud, lovely work. Knew you would get that blue in check, really nice gritty bunch.

I don't mind bare heads myself, I figure they are either so amazing they can hold their breath for years, or there is some force field thingy built in. After all when do we actually see them fighting in space, it is always on a flat piece of field/city/battlefield that these are actually on at this moment in time, and they are that thick headed probably deflect most any projectile thrown at them.

Tiggy is off to a good start too.

@AoV - Thanks mate

@Mad - Heres hoping, a 2+/3++ model is very tanky, but very high points cost. Look forward to our next round of games.

@Cam - I suspect there is a force field, at least it helps with a squishy noggin.

Update: Had a 1500p base vs Mad this afternoon, Necrons got a leg stretch which was nice after being in their case for 4-5 months, eked out a 12 to 6 win with some very lucky rolling from me vs some very unlucky rolling for him (case in point ran C'tan shard of death, rolled a 5 on the shooting attack which is the Str D one shot weapon) rolled a 6 to hit, then a 6 on the D chart then a 5 on the wounds, = dead Swarmlord) Looking forward to the next round. Model wise metals started, cloak basically done

@Januine - Thanks, I would have liked the scripture on the shoulderpad and tabbard to be a little finer, in hindsight I used the wrong brush size.

@Solar - Thank you!

Beautiful work on the centurions Knigtley. I really like the heads rather than helmets as it gives you some perspective as to where exactly the marine is in the suit. Makes you wonder where his arms are though. The suits too small for them to be in the body section... they must be sticking straight out into the upper arm sections of each arm... or maybe the elbows are behind him with the controls just behind the rocket launchers.

And thanks, I fully intend to take you up on your kind offer.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/09/08 20:58:12

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - Thank you, I do admit they do look pretty cool, a nightmare to pack up though, nothing I have fits them just right

@Cam - Thanks! I look forward to seeing what you do with your cents

@Justaerin - Do it! all it takes is some conversion pieces and time!

@EDC - They really do, the books, skulls and esoteric weapons just so good

@Gits - Haha yes, I looked at where the shoulders would fit combined with the legs, there are some proportions which are a little... off, overall they look good I feel.

Update: 12th Push complete. Overall not happy with the time it took to complete this push, I should have finished over a month ago, I got held up with playing PokemonGo for a while, then weekends got away on me with Kids parties and dinners meaning there just wasn't enough time dedicated to painting. Next up is a small commission for Mad with the Marines from the OverKill box set, I also have a bunch of Grey Knight interceptors to do, so might try get them done as well (quick and clean as they say)

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/09/11 21:27:32

Post by: Knightley

@Justaerin - Cheers man

@Azazelx - Thanks!

@Wolvey - Yeah something small up next

@Ice - I may or may not include squiggles, I haven't made that call yet, It is a commission so I might just keep them bland (If thats something I can even do?)

Update: Had a brutal game vs Mad on Saturday, I wanted to field all my recently painted models (chapter master on a bike, centurions, chaplain, contemptor and hammernators, so they all got jammed into a list, after the game I realised that it was a pretty d**k move to include all that 2+ armour in a list where only 3 models had AP2 weapons. Mad had fun, and I think next time I'll keep an eye on my list building.

Model wise I've spent the last week or so mold lining and priming (boring things) so today is the first bit of some paint

The day you paint something without squiggles is the day we know you’ve been replaced by a pod person.

Squiggle like your life depends on it! You don’t want the pod people to win, do you?

I may have to agree with this. I think your squiggle skill is why people do commissions with you.

Still had awesome fun playing the game Knightley! There were some great mini battles throughout the main game which made it really interesting, and seeing your reaction when the fleeing venomthrope turned around and starting downing the bikes in assault was worth it as well.

Exciting to see the Deathwatch get some paint on them!

Squiggles... seems like Deathwatch would write some anti-xenos prose on bits of their armour, so if you want to I'm ok with squiggles... plus, need to keep the readers happy huh

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/09/12 20:34:00

@Nev - Who's to say I'm not a pod person now....

@Ice - Oh, here I was thinking I had a distinctive style apart from the squiggles

@EDC - Cheers

@Mad - Ok, point taken will see what I can squiggle

Update: So continuing to slowly paint all the bits, its going to be a long slog.

Since Deathwatch are so elite, I don't think anyone will blame you for doing them 1 or 2 at a time, and putting that bit more effort into each one.

Could we be expecting some Greywatch in the future?

@WarbossDakka - Yeah seems fair eh doing some individuals during the main batch, just to spice it up. Greywatch may be a thing, however I might just have the weapons distributed amongst the normal marine squads and do a counts as.

@d00m - Oooh that is a hard question to answer, first that comes to mind would be the Fulgrim Commission I did for a friend, the gold and face were amazing, second would be one of the chaos lords repaints, they allowed me to stretch my legs, Fabius Biles cloak is a work of art for me. What is your favourite so far?

@Gits - Thanks

@Justaerin - Yeah the style they have is unique, I feel the designers hit it out the of the park with this model.

@EDC - Cheers!

@WarbossDakka - Yeah, any bleeding of the black was going to be catastrophic, and raising white to a bright look on top of black wasn't easier either!

Update: Figured I'd show you some better (subjective) pictures of the biker, the eagle is off to allow for transport.

Lovely painting. I don't know if it's a lighting thing, but is the black more like a dark grey? Looks very effective. Squiggles are on point as usual too.

@WarbossDakka - Yep, the model was primed black, then had an airbrush of abbadon black to cover any bits the primer missed, then a top down blast through the airbrush of administratum grey to highlight. I looked at magnetising the eagle, but the fixture point is so small and fiddly all the magnets I have are just to big :(

@Mad - Drive me closer I want to hit things with my sword!

@Cam - Thanks!

@WarbossDakka - Thanks, there is a ton of black on these models and to keep them bright and clean I was forced to do a bit more colour than I had intended, I am slightly dreading the Raven Guard assault marine for this very reason.

@Azalle - Thank you!

@Zerg - Thanks and regarding bases, for all my commission work I leave the bases as bare as I can, so that the client can match the bases to the force the want to, in this instance I've even left them off the bases to make it easier.

@EDC - Cheers bro

@d00m - I wouldn't say it was a terrible amount of bits missed, just a post every week day

@Solar - not weird until you think of it this way "I want to take a cast of your face and produce more of them" then it gets a little more weird

There are enough people who hate painting them, there is probably a good market. Shipping would be easy as well.

@Januine - Thanks man, I see your also working on a Cassius and I have you say yours looks just as good!

@Nev - Agreed, although I do like the White Scars Biker if only for the detail on the mini

@Solar - Heh, I've offered that to Gits once or twice (as he approached me) however if anyone is interested in me doing some heads I might consider it.

@WarbossDakka - Cheers, its a little trick I picked up painting the reliefs on my GK terminators and wanted him to look as equally as shiny

@d00m - You'll have to talk to Mad about that one

Nice and neat highlights on the yellow. Well done!

I almost thought there were no squiggles on there, but I suppose you can get away with that scroll on the front.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/10/26 19:49:28

Post by: Knightley

Thanks Warboss! The client only wanted a few squiggles as the rest of his army is pretty bare, I had to acquiesce to his request, he's happy with her though.

Update time; let me tell you a story about this next model I'm going to paint.

There may be a number of readers who, as a younger person got into Warhammer or 40k when in high school, well I got started with 40k when I was in primary school, but it never kicked off as a greater passion for it till later, in between my trysts as a painter and a gamer there was another geek game I participated in at school, Dungeons and Dragons.

I told you that to explain this. About two/three months ago I was looking for things to watch on youtube when one of my regular channels (Nerdist) released a series of videos listed as "Force Grey - Giant Hunters" having a small case of OCD and needing to watch every video I see on my sub list I opened it up. My first reaction was "Hey, this is pretty cool for D&D" then "Oh wow, the Dungeon Master is pretty good" and finally "Holy c**p, who is this DM I need to know more" I find out his name is Matthew Mercer and he is a Voice Actor, well that explains his voices and demeanour with everything being on point. I wonder what else he's done??

A lengthy google later I find he runs a weekly D&D campaign on Twitch.tv with the show called "Critical Role" on Geek and Sundry. I think they were up to Episode 70 odd at this point and I had a look to see if I could find any of the previous videos, which I did on Youtube. Big problem, they were 3-5 hours long and I wasn't sure I was up to watching 210 to 350 hours of some guys play D&D no matter how good the DM is.

I decided to give it a couple of episodes to see if it was worth the time investment, Oh boy did I find out it was! The other party members are also all voice actors and there is such a wide range of experiences in the group I was instantly hooked, I've been power listening every day while painting and I am now up to date.

There is a side effect to listening to a bunch of nerdy ass voice actors playing D&D, is now I want to play.... and here the next chapter begins, I've found an old mate of mine who partakes in a weekly D&D campaign as well and I want in, so I present to you my new Character - Micus Demonbane, Holy Paladin of Vengeance, armed with a vambrace mounted cross bow, Long sword. Armoured in weathered Platemail and carries with him a hallowed book of demonic names.

The model is a custom piece from www.heroforge.com and for any of you who are interested in Critical Role here is a play list of their adventures - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-p9lWIhcLQ&list=PLqTT_VuffgDP0I6accl0jP5p3kxBRPVPa

I am excited.

Post by: WarbossDakka

He looks pretty awesome!

I'm also quite a long time follower of Critical Role, and as soon as I found out about the roles they play in various franchises, it only made me like the cast even more. I try to follow the story as well as I can (3+ hour shows are quite hard to squeeze in somewhere!) and love every second of it. I don't play DnD myself, but it certainly has kept me entertained for hours on end. The only problem is when you listen to them for long enough, you start picking out their voices when they're in character. Laura is one of the main culprits for this, as when you listen out for it you find out she is everywhere!

@WarbossDakka - I knew there would be a number of Critters on Dakka, it's to huge not to have some! Agreed Laura is everywhere, I was watching a gears of war video and lo and behold, I hear a familiar voice.

@Mad - Yep, I added some other bits to the model and wanted a necklace but didn't have anything small enough, then saw some brass etch I had lying about, boom sorted

@EDC - Thanks man, I'm actually considering watching it again to pick up on more of the things I may have missed on the first listening.

@Master Azalle - Cheers, the use of an airbrush take a lot of the work away from black armour

@d00m - Thank you!

Update: Washes applied, thinking on doing some free hand on the base, maybe see if I can get some cobblestone going on.

Perhaps you could do an "aura" glow on the base of the model.... like paladin in Diablo 2, running around with a swirling glowing aura on ground around him.

Just a thought. Paintjob is looking up to normal high standard thus far.

Having just finished working my way through the whole thing, Knightley, I'm very impressed with your work - both in terms of quality and quantity.

Quick question about the IH guy from the recent DWOK project - the skull on his chest aquilla and on his backpack both appear to have a bionic eye, yet I note that you painted that element as bone - was there a particular reason for that?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/10/30 19:56:11

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Cheers, I want to take my time a little (not a lot as I hope to have this as a game piece) and give him some really stand out bits.

@Mad - That is a brilliant idea, had I not just completed the base (as below) I would have totally run with that!

@Dysartes - Welcome to the blog! What would be your favourite painted model from the archives. Regarding the IH gentleman, it call came down to speed and getting the commission completed I went to all skulls and did them bone, had I applied more time then they would have gotten a silver bionic bit to complete his heritage. Good spot however

Update: As mentioned above I pretty much have completed the base, I wanted Micus to be interrupting a ritual stepping into the circle to break the wards then channelling his might to his long sword. To this end I tried my hand at some cobble stone and free handed a sigil on the ground. Thoughts?

That's a tough question, Knightley.

- The Fellblade
- NDK with the custom halberd
- The Necrons

Love the base, the circle is great as are the cobbles; funnily enough you inspired me to go a bit crazy on my building and do shaded tiles and an elder sign BTW my favourite model is still either your classic jetbike conversion or a certain Grandmaster

I think you've nailed the icon on the ground, but doesn't it look a bit chaosy? Not necessarily a bad thing, but it is certainly looking like it!

Very nice painting on the gems on the sword.

@d00m - Thanks!

@Dysartes - Some good choices in there, interesting the Necrons got featured they were pretty quick to paint and I wanted an army I could game with.

@Mad - Cheers, I think it needs something more, maybe some blood splatter?

@Caranthir987 - Welcome to the blog!! Happy to inspire you to greater work

@EDC - Hahaha, I have some ideas on that as well, there will be squiggles...

@Graven - Ah yes, Grand Master Knightley, he is a very cool model and I painted him very well.

@WarbossDakka - True, I figure the Paladin is all about wrecking chaos and evil demons, so maybe it fits, your thoughts?

Update: Armour almost done with layers and the blade has some cool effect added.

I think you can afford to be smug about that sword. It looks AWESOME! The problem you may encounter is though that your model is going to look so much better than everyone elses - it might ruin the immersion

Great model Knightley. Definitely one of my favourites you've done.

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/01 05:14:25

Post by: Mad..

That sword is absolutely ace!

In terms of blood splatter on the base... could work, I would look at doing something really subtle like a few drops of blood around, maybe from a sacrifice to power that rune on the ground? Maybe a small trail of blood drops leading towards the rune?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/01 09:43:30

Post by: Dysartes

Nice work on the sword, Knightley - is the book going to gain some writings as a final step?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/01 13:37:55

Post by: inmygravenimage

Maybe dried blood so it doesn't get lost against the ritual circle?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/01 19:39:51

Post by: Knightley

@WarbossDakka - Haha, I think that if this guy is going to be going toe to toe with some big baddies he would need any advantage he can get, so a swish paint job might a step in the right direction.

@Mad - Good idea, I used that idea and ran with it, Micus has disembowelled a cultist and his blood is leaking through the cobble stones

@Dysartes - Oh but of course, I wanted to have the book look like something that features a lot of demonic creatures and as such has diagrams etc of them and things about them, so not just squiggles.

@Graven - I thought about doing that but wasn't sure how to get a dried blood effect on stone, my understanding is blood dries a slight orange/brown look, and I wasn't sure if it would be gloss or not.

Update: I wanted the armour to look well worn and beaten up, this guy is an adventurer after all, so I applied some weathering as well, I'm not the best at this but I am trying to learn and be better at it. Being an adventurer he wouldn't always been able to keep his face well shaven so he got some stubble. The Icon/Symbol on his tabbard is the Vox Machina Icon/Symbol as I wanted to have a throw back to why I started this whole thing. Also take note of the blood effect on the base, I think it looks really cool. The book has an expanded version of the ritual circle on the ground but in a smaller version.

Thoughts? have I made a mistake with the weathering choice?

-Crisp & Grey- A NZ blog (May Update - I painted a Dragon!) @ 2016/11/01 19:47:48

Post by: WarbossDakka

Nope, I think the weathering is the right colour. The only thing I'd say is the scrolls are too clean for the weathering you've done - I think you'd get away with it though.

Knew there was going to be squiggles on it eventually

@WarbossDakka - Just a clarification on scrolls, are you referring to the tabard over his armour? if so yeah, it is quite clean, my thought process was he could wash the tabard, but repairing his armour would be much harder, not sure that makes the most sense.

@Gits - Thanks! the photos really don't show all the detail as its pretty glossy :(

@d00m - Yuss! thats great to hear

@Justaerin - Awesome, I'm up to about 15 I would order, even made my character from 1997, might get her printed next.

@Dysartes - I looked top down and you might be right, there is a slight curve on the left track when you look at the front "I think" Once I get to painting it properly we'll see if its really noticeable.

@WarbossDakka - Yeah, you say that now, but look at the pic I posted below

@Zerg - Oh yes, I played against one about a year and a half ago and it was an unstoppable behemoth, loaded with TH/SS Terminators and characters it was a very scary prospect. This will be for my Gray Nights Marine force - need a transport for my own hammernators

@Gits - You say that now, lemme know what you think after this photo.

@Nev - Its huge, and its heavy.

Thank god for the mask, you would be off your head on superglue fumes!

That is some serious resin. Lets see it come together (safely of course )

@Justaerin - The mold looks ok, thin at points, bubbles at other, harsher to deal with as I find FC softer. Close on the item

@Solar_lion - Winner winner chicken dinner!

@Gits - Tell me about it, all the cutting/sanding was a long weekend.

@Graven - Yessy-yes?

@d00m - Thanks

@WarbossDakka - Not just the fumes, the resin dust is not healthy for you either, I hear its a carcinogenic.

Update: So much washing to do, so many parts....

I wouldn't know where to even start if I'm honest. Good luck either way.

@WarbossDakka - Well I figured I'd start with the feet

Update: Started with the feet after the base was stuck down to a bit of board, I wanted to "dip my toe" into adding some water effect to a crater, the toe may look silly to others, but I like it

It does look a bit strange, but I think that is because I am equating robo-toes to those on an animal. It makes sense that a giant robot machine god would have some baller stabilization toes.

With all the other wacky stuff going on in the 40k universe, I think that toe doesn't look half bad.

Although that Rhino would be a ceramite pancake

@Whale - Specially a god machine of the Omnissiah!

@WarbossDakka - Certainly agree, I suspect once the full weight of this weapon platform is applied we'll end up with a rhino pancake

Update: With all the pinning he can now stand unsupported, no glue on this baby yet!

Is that a compliment you hear often, Knightley?

Looks like the build is off to a good start. I take it the base is something from FW as well?

@WarbossDakka - Thank you!

@Sigulf - Welcome to the Blog, happy to have your comment. It's not often I get told I have nice legs

@Dysartes - Only from random men in the street, slightly disconcerting as mine are like a wookies... The base is one that used to be in the GW library of scenery - http://store.miniwargaming.com/images/D/battlescape-o496c.jpg

@EDC - Cheers mate

Update: I primed the base a little silver

Awesome work, looking forward to seeing both of these done.

Could I ask a favour, can I have a shot of the back of the legs, I have a scratch built torso and head, but no legs, need to make some. Would really appreciate a shot of the mechanics.

In the mean time, good luck you are going to have to really get your squiggle on for this one!

@Cam - See below, I hope it helps.

@EDC - Very slowly catchy land raidy the spartan is a behemoth and will take a while to paint imo.

Update: legs got a silver prime as well, hopefully this provides the angles your after Cam

Post by: Knightley

@Zerg - I brought a specific black pot for that reason exactly!

@Gits -

@Januine - There are a bunch of magnets in the waist and the weapon arms (might have to leave the cables off to make them swappable) My current advice, do a pilot hole then go up in size slowly (almost ruined the top of the waist as I went 10mm right off the bat, big mistake.

Update: More metals primed then washed, my god this thing is large

@WarbossDakka - I wonder how much grief I'd get if I just posted one giant squiggle on a bit of paper and said, titan complete

I'll say! The one reason I DON'T want a Titan is the fact that i'll need 2 pots of paint for each of my main colors!
That power room is lookin' mighty pretty, and I love how detailed the inside of a Titan is.

@d00m - Thank you!

@Justaerin - Yeah tell me about it, I used pretty much an entire grey pot of paint to do the spartan

@Mad - Could always use him as terrain right

@Januine - I have 3 1 x 10mm magnets in the stalk of the arms and 1 1 x 10mm in the top shoulder, I think it hold just fine in my test runs.

@Cam - Scratch built has those problems eh? Any other shots you'd like me to take?

@EDC - Thanks bud!

@WarbossDakka - I know right, and when the thing is together all the bits at the bottom of the interior definitely wont be seen. I guess I'll know about it right?

@Egg - I really want it to match the Cerastus Knight I finished at the beginning of the year, the down side is there is sod all trim on the plates so the effect will look different, however I plan on shading each panel with the airbrush, so that will be something very new.

@EDC - Thanks!

@d00m - Cheers

Update: Powered through the servitors so they are done now, very fiddly to get in amongst them.

@Gits - Thanks, this thing is so large and imposing I can see why so many start and never finish

@Solar - Happy to help, I went with a very basic base, wash, highlight instead of my normal base, wash, layer, highlight, extreme highlight. For stuff you wont usually see I wanted it to be painted but not over the top.

@EDC - You sure? I had a look when I got home and from all accounts everything I can see has squiggles, what screen dont show it?

Update: Got the interior area based and washed

@d00m - Thanks, just taking it one day at a time

@WarbossDakka - Yeah lots of detail and textures, I was very impressed.

Update: So after getting the interior done I went through the primary assembly of the body, lots of gaps, lots. I'm going to be using a ton of greenstuff to fix the gaps but thats a task for later. Having the body done I wanted to see what it looks like standing on its own now, with no glue.

and with the guns on with magnets and the head with bluetac

I never realized that Titans had all that interior detail. It all looks great! As for testing what the model will look like before gluing it, I do the exact same thing! It's probably a good idea to get a feel for how you want to pose the model. Even more so for something as big and expensive as a Titan.

@WarbossDakka - You and me both mate, I've even done some sound effects of the plasma cannon firing and coupled with big explosions (my son thought this was hilarious) Metals will have some other colours, but the legs will have plates over the top so I wont be doing to much with them.

@Egg - Yeah I see this going in stages, first was getting the thing standing without glue, next will be the base fully painted, then getting the lower portion painted, then either weapons or torso (these seem to be mini pushes in them selves)

@Justaerin - Who's to say I'm not, this is by far the largest and most complex model I've built ever and I am deathly scared of getting to 80% done and realising I missed something or glues something the wrong way around.

@AoV - Thanks, I can't claim I was the first, but I think its very fitting in this sense

@Zerg - Yep! also consider something of this size needs to get pinned, and imaging committing to drilling holes in something this large only to think you made a mistake....

@Dysartes - Cheers, next is the outer skin eh?

Update: So wanting to get a properly standing model I need to get the base done as soon as possible, so thats next on the list, base colours underway
